A 34-year-old pregnant woman was allegedly raped by three men and set on fire in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, and is battling for her life in a hospital, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Chand Ka Pura village, around 3 km from Ambah town, on Friday, he said.

The victim went to the village to work out a compromise with a woman who had accused her husband of rape, inspector Alok Parihar of Ambah police station told PTI.

The victim was, however, allegedly raped by three men who were present in the woman's house. Later, the trio and the accused woman poured fuel on her and set her ablaze, the official said.

A video has been shared with the police in which the victim, being rushed to a hospital in a vehicle, is heard saying that she was first gang raped, and then the accused woman and the men had set her ablaze, he said.

The victim's husband, who is out on bail in the rape case, has handed the video to the police, Parihar said.

San Francisco crowd sets self-driving car on fire

set fire thesaurus

First, a man rams a skateboard into the passenger window of a white vehicle. He exits the frame, then returns and slams his drink container into the windshield. Bystanders can be seen cheering the people vandalizing the car, as others record on their phones. Soon the car is engulfed in flames.

Scenes of chaos from San Francisco’s Chinatown spread across social media Sunday after a mob vandalized and set fire to a Waymo self-driving car using a firework on Saturday evening. Waymo, owned by Google parent company Alphabet, has been offering Californians a 24/7 taxi service in driverless cars since the summer.

“Waymo Vehicle surrounded and then graffiti’d,” the San Francisco Fire Department said on social media hours later. “Windows were broken, and firework lit on fire inside the vehicle which ultimately caught the entire vehicle on fire.”

Photos uploaded by the fire department, which later reminded people that using fireworks is banned in San Francisco, showed the vehicle in flames and later its charred remains.

Police are investigating, and no arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon, San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Paulina Henderson told The Washington Post.

Officers responded to the fire at about 8:50 p.m. local time, the police statement said. When the officers arrived, the unoccupied car was “engulfed in flames,” according to the statement, which added that there were no reports of injuries.

Mayor London Breed (D) warned that the fire could have been much worse for the surrounding area.

“Chinatown is one of the densest neighborhoods in San Francisco, and any fire could explode and spread among tightly-packed buildings to endanger lives, homes and businesses,” she said in a statement Monday afternoon.

Aaron Peskin (D), president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, told NBC News that the incident was “terrible” and “extremely dangerous.”

“People could have been hurt and most importantly, this was the day of the Chinese Lunar New Year,” Peskin said. “This is one of the most important days for families, there were thousands and thousands of tourists here, partaking in the events.”

A Waymo spokesperson told Reuters that the passenger-less car was moving along a street in Chinatown when people surrounded it. Later someone threw a firework inside, setting the fire, the company said.

“The vehicle was not transporting any riders and no injuries have been reported,” the company said.

Although cars without drivers have become a common sight on San Francisco’s winding and sloping streets, there are long-standing tensions between the city’s residents and the cars.

Still, rarely have driverless cars been set on fire.

A Waymo vehicle struck a cyclist last week in the Potrero Hill neighborhood, resulting in minor injuries, the Verge reported . The Waymo passenger was unhurt, and the cyclist left the scene on their own.

Driverless cars have caused major concerns in San Francisco by disrupting first responders on multiple occasions, including driving into scenes cordoned off by caution tape and striking a firetruck responding to an emergency, The Post previously reported .

Last year, a robotaxi operated by Cruise — a Waymo rival — rolled over a pedestrian and dragged her about 20 feet, after which the California Department of Motor Vehicles suspended its operations. Days later, the company said it would suspend all driverless operations in the country to examine its process and earn back public trust.

In four videos uploaded by witness Michael Vandi, who heads Addy AI, an AI company, a man who is using his jacket to cover his face can be seen scribbling on the back of the car with what appears to be a sharpie. Others in the crowd appear unmasked. An unidentified voice encourages others to light the vehicle on fire.

The atmosphere directly outside Hua Long Trading, a shop selling cigarettes, snacks and other daily items on Jackson Street, appears charged.

Once the car is set on fire, however, people appear to back away from the vehicle. The Post could not access footage of the moment when the firecracker was thrown inside the car.

Vandi told Reuters in a direct message on X, formerly Twitter, that people were celebrating the Lunar New Year on Saturday evening by setting off fireworks. He said he saw a person jump onto the hood of the vehicle and break its windshield, and another later jumped onto the hood as the crowd clapped. Vandi could not be reached for comment Monday morning.

“That was when it went WILD,” he wrote. “There were 2 groups of people. Folks who encourage it - and others who were just shocked & started filming. No one stood up - i mean there wasn’t anything you could do to stand up to dozens of people.”

A crowd set fire to a Waymo taxi in San Francisco, as tensions about driverless tech grow

  • A Waymo robo-taxi was set on fire Saturday by a crowd in San Francisco.
  • The motive is unclear, but mistrust toward driverless technology in the city is high.
  • There have been multiple accidents since the city greenlighted expanding robo-taxi services.

Insider Today

A San Francisco crowd torched a Waymo robo-taxi on Saturday night, the local fire department said, amid ongoing mistrust of driverless technology in the city.

The vehicle was "surrounded and then graffiti'd, windows were broken, and firework lit on fire inside the vehicle," a post on X by the San Francisco Fire Department said. It was reduced to an ashen shell.

Footage shared by an onlooker , Michael Vandi, on X shows a crowd surrounding the vehicle during Lunar New Year celebrations in San Francisco's Chinatown.

One member of the crowd can be heard shouting, "Light that shit on fire!"

Videos from local news outlets, also shared on X , show the remains of the vehicle as firefighters douse it in water.

There were no people in the vehicle, and nobody was injured, the Los Angeles Times reported , citing police.

The fire is being investigated, the outlet said.

Waymo spokesperson Sandy Karp confirmed the facts of the incident and told BI the company is "working closely with local safety officials to respond to the situation."'

The motive for the attack on the robo-car is unclear, but autonomous-car companies have come under heightened scrutiny since the technology has spread in San Francisco's streets.

Waymo began trialing driverless taxis in 2022 under various restrictions in San Francisco.

But it's had teething problems — a Wired investigation in April gathered considerable dashcam footage showing Waymo vehicles cluttering roads and blocking public-transport vehicles.

In May, police were flummoxed by a Waymo taxi that drove into the scene of a fire and almost ran over a fire hose.

Nonetheless, driverless-taxi companies were given the green light in August to launch expanded services in the city.

The move unleashed chaos on the roads almost immediately.

Cruise, majority-owned by General Motors, quickly halved its fleet after a spate of accidents and traffic jams , and by October — after a woman was pinned under one of its cars — the city had revoked its permits .

Waymo, owned by Alphabet, has said that its autonomous vehicles are "significantly" safer than those driven by humans, pointing to a 2023 study based on data it shared with the insurance company Swiss Re .

Man behind gender reveal that sparked El Dorado fire in Southern California pleads guilty

set fire thesaurus

A man who ignited a 22,000-acre fire that killed a firefighter and burned down homes in California will spend one year in county jail after pleading guilty.

Refugio Jimenez Jr. pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of recklessly causing a fire to an inhabited structure, the San Bernardino district attorney said on Friday. In addition to jail time, Jimenez will be responsible for 200 hours of community service and will serve two years felony probation.

"Resolving the case was never going to be a win," San Bernardino County district attorney Jason Anderson said in a press release . “The Defendants’ reckless conduct had tremendous impact on land, properties, emergency response resources, the displacement of entire communities, and resulted in the tragic death of Forest Service Wildland Firefighter Charles Morton."

On Sept. 5, 2020, Jimenez and his wife Angelina Jimenez set off a pyrotechnic device to reveal the gender of their new baby with pink or blue smoke at a family gathering in El Dorado Ranch Park at the base of the San Bernardino mountains, around 22 miles outside of downtown San Bernardino.

The smoke ignited the surrounding dry brush and sparked a fire that burned through 22,000 acres of land, according to the district attorney. The couple tried in vain to put out the fire on their own before calling 911, and cooperated with officials who arrived on the scene.

An attorney for Jimenez did not immediately return a request for comment. The district attorney's office declined to comment further on the case.

18-year firefighting veteran killed in wildfire

Charles Morton, a U.S. Forest Service wildland firefighter who fought fires for 18 years, died during an operation carried out almost two weeks after the fire first broke out.

Crews from the San Bernardino County fire department and the Forest Service's Big Bear Hotshot Squad were attempting to control the blaze by setting off small fires . After a wind change unexpectedly spread the fire, Morton headed off on his own to scout the spot fires, according to a report on Morton's death released by the U.S. Forest Service . He died of his burns after he was trapped by the fire, and his body was recovered that night.

Morton, 39, joined the Fire Service in 2007 and worked for the Front Country and Mountaintop ranger districts, the Mill Creek Interagency Hotshots, Engine 31, Engine 19, before he joined the Big Bear Interagency Hotshots, according to the Palm Springs Desert Sun , part of the USA TODAY Network.

Hotshot crews, comprised of around 20 firefighters, fight the most challenging parts of large wildland fires.

Wife sentenced to community service, one year probation

Angelina Jimenez pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of recklessly causing fire to property of another, and was sentenced to 400 hours of community service and one year of summary probation, according to the district attorney. The couple must also pay $1,789,972 in victims' restitution fees.

The pair initially pleaded not guilty after they were indicted on more than 30 charges by a grand jury in July of 2021, according to the Victorville Daily Press , part of the USA TODAY Network. They were released on recognizance, even though prosecutors asked the judge to hold them on $50,000 bail.

On the third anniversary of the fire last September, the Fire Service filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the smoke bombs that set off the fire, claiming the devices are illegal in the state of California.

The fire injured 13 people, including two firefighters. It spread across 36 square miles and damaged 20 buildings, including five homes, and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate across the San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The Fire Service said the blaze was finally contained on Nov. 16.

More than 8,600 fires burned across California that year, destroying more than 11,000 structures and killing 33 people, according to CalFire . The year saw a record two million acres of land torched across the state.

Smoke billows from a car on fire as a crowd of people surround it.

Driverless taxi vandalized and set on fire in San Francisco’s Chinatown

California authorities investigating if attack on Google’s Waymo car is latest in series of protests targeting autonomous vehicles

Authorities in California are working to determine if the destruction of a driverless taxi in an arson attack by a mob of lunar new year revelers was the latest in a series of protests targeting autonomous vehicles in the state.

According to the San Francisco fire department, which posted images of the incinerated SUV on Twitter/X, a group of people jumped on the electric vehicle in the city’s Chinatown district on Saturday night, smashing windows and spraying it with graffiti before setting it alight with a firework.

Officials said the car, a Jaguar I-Pace operated by Waymo , Google’s self-driving car project, was unoccupied, and that no arrests had been made as of Monday morning.

“The vehicle was not transporting any riders and no injuries have been reported,” Waymo said in a statement. “We are working closely with local safety officials to respond to the situation.”

The attack follows a number of recent cases and protests involving autonomous vehicles in California, a leading state for the driverless revolution with more than 9m miles driven on public roads by test permit holders last year, according to its department of motor vehicles (DMV).

The Guardian reported last summer on a group called the Safe Street Rebels, which has operated a campaign of disrupting and disabling driverless vehicles in San Francisco since they first appeared in 2022.

Members realized quickly that placing a traffic cone on the hood of a self-driving car interfered with sensors and placed it in “panic mode”, rendering it immobile until a human employee could come to rescue it.

Protesters question the safety of the vehicles, operated in California almost exclusively by Waymo since Cruise, a subsidiary of General Motors, saw its test permit suspended in October last year.

Cruise was accused of trying to hide the severity of an incident in San Francisco in which a pedestrian was hit by a car, driven by a human driver, at a stoplight and flung into the path of a Cruise self-driving car, which then ran her over and stopped on top of her. The woman survived.

Cruise withdrew its fleet of 950 vehicles after the California DMV said they posed “an unreasonable threat to public safety ” and that the agency was investigating a number of other “concerning incidents” involving driverless cars.

after newsletter promotion

The safety record of Waymo’s driverless taxi service has also come into question. Last June, one of its vehicles killed a dog , and California’s automobile regulator launched an investigation recently after a Waymo car struck and injured a cyclist that was obscured from its sensors by another vehicle at a San Francisco intersection.

Police said they had not immediately established whether the destruction of the Waymo car in Chinatown was linked to protests against autonomous vehicles or the work of opportunist vandals.

An eyewitness, Michael Vandi, told Reuters he saw one person jump on the roof and break the windshield, and another leapt onto the vehicle’s hood as a large group of others cheered, some battering it with skateboards.

“That was when it went wild,” he told the news agency. “There were two groups of people, folks who encouraged it and others who were just shocked and started filming. No one stood up. There wasn’t anything you could do to stand up to dozens of people.”
