26 Fun Halloween Math Activities for Kids of All Ages

26 fun Halloween math activitie for kids of all ages written above a small orange pumpkin and orane and black beads

If you have been around my blog for a while, you know that I love connecting lesson plans to all sorts of holidays. Halloween is no exception! I have always found it easier to work with a student’s excitement than to try to fight against it. These Halloween math activities are a great way to practice math skills when kids are too excited for their standard lessons.

Teaching tips:

  • Let kids know the plan for candy. Will they be allowed to eat it after the Halloween math activities are completed? They are less likely to sneak it during the lesson if they know they can enjoy it after the work is finished.
  • Don’t get hung up on the suggested grade level. Choose the activities that will best suit your students.
  • Set out a few Halloween math activities in one day and let your child rotate through all of the math centers.
  • Make it a party by getting a small group of friends together for some Halloween math fun.
  • Keep a few themed math worksheets on hand for days when you need a quick math activity.

Halloween math activities written in front of a book, a pumpkin, Halloween mini erasers, and candy

1. Halloween Patterns

Patterning is a pretty basic preschool and elementary math skill. Young children can learn to recognize and build a variety of patterns. Thankfully it is easy to put a Halloween spin on this standard math activity.

When my kids were young I had a collection of Halloween mini erasers for patterning, but you can also use candy or cut-out printed Halloween clip art.

This is a great activity to add to a Halloween boredom-busting basket.

2. Harriet’s Halloween Candy

This was one of my favorite Halloween math activities when I was a classroom kindergarten teacher!

I would read the book, Harriet’s Halloween Candy by Nancy Carlson , and then we would do math exercises with a few pieces of candy. This printable pack is similar to the Halloween math worksheets I used to use, but it is completely optional. The pack acts as a guide, but you can have kids estimate, sort by different attributes, and graph without it.

Harriet's Halloween Candy, 2nd Edition (Nancy Carlson Picture Books)

  • Carlson, Nancy (Author)
  • English (Publication Language)

Candy is a surefire way to keep kids interested in math! This is a great way to put all of the candy collected on Halloween night to good use. Candy is a favorite math manipulative for Halloween activities in my house.

If you don’t want to use edible candy, just substitute candy images.

3. Pumpkin Investigation

This is another one of my favorite Halloween math ideas for little ones. It is perfect following a field trip to a pumpkin patch. Pumpkins are plentiful this time of year so we might as well include them in our lessons while practicing important skills.

Investigating pumpkins with attention to math makes a great hands-on activity or math center. This free Pumpkin Investigation printable helps kids explore a pumpkin’s height, circumference, and weight.

4. Graphing M&Ms

Funsize packages of M&Ms lend themselves so well to math activities. Each child gets their own little packet of M&Ms that they can sort by color. After the candies are sorted, they can be graphed. This free Halloween candy packet contains a few pages to help kids learn with candy.

5. Pumpkin Number Recognition

Identifying numbers is another early math skill. In this pumpkin number recognition activity, young students will identify the number on a pumpkin mold . Then they will count the correct number of pumpkin seeds and place them in the mold. Picking up little pumpkin seeds, either with fingers or kid-friendly tweezers, provides a little extra fine motor skills practice. If you don’t have pumpkin seeds, use pom poms.

3 Pack Leaf Pumpkin Molds Pumpkin Fall Leaf Silicone Mold, Fall Leaf Shape Mold, Halloween Thanksgiving 3D Candy Chocolate Candle Soap Baking Tools

Make this activity more challenging by using number words instead of numerals. Number words also happen to be sight words.

6. 1 + 1 = 2 Ghosts Say Boo

I love incorporating books into math whenever possible. This book, 1 + 1 = Ghosts Say Boo bok by Melanie Salas , is a great addition to elementary Halloween math lesson plans. It is a cute way to practice repeated addition math facts.

Simply reading the book is fine, but adding a hands-on element lets kids act out the story. Dried lima beans with black eyes drawn on make excellent ghost math manipulatives.

1+1=2 Ghosts say, 'Boo!' Halloween Double Facts: Math Family Fun

  • Salas, Melanie (Author)
  • 33 Pages – 09/02/2021 (Publication Date) – Independently published (Publisher)

7 . Jack O Lantern Fractions

This free Jack O Lantern Fractions worksheet asks students to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions to solve a riddle.

8. Geo Pumpkins

Geo pumpkins are similar to geoboards but obviously, use a pumpkin. Young children use push pins (with supervision) and rubberbands to make shapes on a pumpkin. Pumpkins are only available this time of the year, so let’s take advantage of them while we can.

9. Candy Corn Greater or Less Than

Have you ever noticed that candy corns are in the shape of triangles? These triangles look a little like the greater than or less than symbols. Kids can either pull two playing cards or roll two dice. Then they use a piece of candy corn in between the different numbers to show which number is less than or greater than.

Understanding concepts such as more and less is a key number sense skill.

10 . Halloween Multiplication Code Breaker

This free Halloween-themed worksheet is a fun multiplication review exercise. Students practice their multiplication facts as they answer the problems and then use those answers to solve the secret code.

11. Halloween Sticker Cards

This activity is a fun way to practice number identification. It requires just a bit of prep work but can be done while watching a favorite show.

You will need:

  • Halloween stickers
  • Index cards
  • Wooden clothes pins

Halloween Stickers for Kids 120 Sheets Assortment 1440 Stickers Halloween Mini Stickers for Party Favors Treats Classroom Crafts

  • Package Includes: 120 assorted Halloween sticker sheets, 1440 stickers. Each sheet measures 8.7” X 3.1”.
  • Various Cute Patterns: These stickers feature different Halloween themes, which include castle silhouettes, cats, bats, hats, jack-o-lanterns, candies and…
  • Great Gifts for Kids: Every kid likes Halloween party. Use them as party favors and your kids will love. Perfect for Halloween themed party, birthday…

On each index card place a few stickers. The number of stickers will depend on what number range your child is working on. It might be 0 – 5, 0 – 10, 0 – 20, etc. There will be one index card for every number in the desired range.

Label a clothespin with each number in the range.

Mix up the index cards. Then let your little one match the labeled clothespin with the correct index card. Ex, the clothespin labeled 5 will match the card with 5 stickers.

12. Halloween-Themed Math Sensory Bin

Sensory bins are a great way for little ones to practice math skills, without them knowing they are practicing math skills.

When preschoolers and early elementary students play with a sensory bin they can learn:

  • Measurement

This monster soup Halloween sensory bin looks like a fun activity for young kids. It has a fun Halloween theme. The longer kids enjoy a sensory bin, the more they learn. I always loved observing the different ways kids approach sensory bins.

The best part is that a sensory bin can stay out for weeks! It makes a great educational center. Small groups of kids can play with it at the same time.

13. Place Value Matching

These free apple and pumpkin cards are a cute way for kids to practice place value. Just print the cards and let kids match up the two and three-digit numbers with the cards that show the correct hundreds, tens, and ones blocks.

14. Budget for a Halloween Party

One of the only math assignments I remember from my middle school years was budgeting for a party. The teacher gave everyone a pretend sum of money and we needed to plan the food and entertainment using sales flyers. Kids today have it easier because they can use the internet to gather pricing information.

If your kids are not interested in budgeting for a pretend Halloween party, how about budgeting for a costume? They could budget for a real costume or plan pretend costume choices. The customizations are pretty endless as long as they stick to their budget.

Learning to stick to a budget is great practice for real life.

15. Create a Haunted House

Symmetry is usually taught in upper elementary or middle school math. Challenge your middle school students to create a symmetrical haunted house.

Kids could draw, paint, or construct a house out of 3-D objects.

16. Halloween Jack O Lantern Coordinate Plane

Kids can practice plotting coordinate points in a plane with this free worksheet . It is self-checking because the image of a jack-lantern will be obvious if they plotted the points correctly. No answer key is required!

17. Find the Unit Price

Challenge your middle schoolers to find the unit price on bags of Halloween candy to find the best deal.

18. Halloween Simplifying Expressions

Give your older students extra practice simplifying expressions with this Halloween worksheet . Students will solve the equations and then color the haunted house coloring page according to the code.

Halloween worksheets are a low-prep way to review math skills.

19. Halloween Percents With Candy

Older kids love working with candy too! This activity is designed to be done with a partner, but could also be done independently. Students receive a little bag of candy and then follow the directions on the free worksheet . They will find various percentages.

High School

20. Halloween Graphing Linear Equations

High schoolers will gain extra experience graphing linear equations with this Halloween-themed math worksheet.

21. Halloween Slope Intercept

This Halloween slope intercept worksheet gives teens an opportunity to practice the slope-intercept formula. They will match the equation with the Halloween icon located on the graph.

22. Halloween Transformations

Geometry transformations are not always super fun, but this Halloween math activity makes it as enjoyable as possible. High school students will choose a Halloween icon (ghost, bat, pumpkin, little monsters, etc.) and use a graph to enlarge and reduce the size.

23. Standard Deviation Using Candy

Kids will be happy to practice their statistics skills if they get to use candy in the lesson. This free activity guides kids through finding mean, variance, and standard deviation using Halloween candy.

24. Halloween Polynomial Practice

This free worksheet gives kids a chance to work on their polynomial skills. Kids solve the polynomial equations and color the picture following the code.

25. The Great Pumpkin Equation Review

Teens will get a kick out of watching It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown as part of their math assignment. First, watch the show. Then solve the related equations .

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (Remastered Deluxe Edition)

  • O-Sleeve Amaray
  • Various (Actor)

26. Frankenstein is So Complex

This free high school math worksheet helps kids master dividing complex numbers. They solve the equation and then color the worksheet according to the code.

I hope you enjoy these fun ideas with your students. Add these Halloween-themed activities to your math lesson plans any time in the month of October! Let’s do some alphabet matching practice! You can hide the small spider letters in a Halloween sensory bin and have your little ones search the sensory bin for a letter. Then ask them to match it up to the large spider letters. This activity will help them recognize letters in both uppercase and lowercase font.

Halloween letter formation activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Another way to use the large spider letters is to work on letter formation. The spiders on the letters are positioned where we should start forming the letter. You can have your little ones trace these letters with their fingers, then ask them to use small manipulatives to form the letters (like these Halloween mini erasers ). You could also have them write the letters in a sensory bin or tray of salt, rice, or sand.

Halloween literacy activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Can you guess who’s hiding in the haunted house?! Memory games and activities help our little ones practice important skills, such as concentration, focus, and perseverance as well as strengthening their working memory. In this game, you’ll choose three spider letters to put on the mat (they can even spell a CVC word, such as “sat.”) Then have your little one close their eyes while you take a letter and hide it under the haunted house. See if they can remember which letter you took away!

Halloween alphabet arc for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

An alphabet arc is a great tool for beginning readers. It helps them see the alphabet in a less-overwhelming way. (I love using these letters since the vowels are red and consonants are blue). Once you lay it out like this, you can use it in so many ways! One way is to say a sound, such as /m/, and ask your little one to point to the matching letter. You could also pull three letters from the arc to make a CVC word, then have your little one put them back where they belong.

When my son was in homeschool preschool, we used the arc to play a memory game. I asked him to close his eyes while “Batty” took a letter away & hid it in the cave. When he opened them, he had to figure out which letter “Batty” took away. We had a blast with this!

Halloween broomstick craft for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

I know I already mentioned my favorite Halloween books above, but I couldn’t forget to shout out my all-time favorite for Halloween… Room on the Broom ! Check out this blog post for lots of fun ideas to accompany this read aloud. Your kids will LOVE it!

Halloween rhyming activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Oh, and while you’re checking out my Room on a Broom blog post …you can download this FREE Halloween Rhyming game! Rhyming is another important phonological awareness skill that we want to develop in preschool and pre-k. Use this freebie to practice word families, either orally or by having your little one read them (if they’re ready for that step). Download it for free from this post !

PRESCHOOL HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES: MATH

Spider spin and trace for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

This is an engaging activity that will help little ones with number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, fine motor skills, pencil grasp, and subitizing. Have your little one spin the spinner , identify the number, and count out that many of a small manipulative (such as plastic spiders ). Then have them find the corresponding number on their mat and trace it. They can also count the dots in the ten frame below the number.

Halloween number identification activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

This fang-tastic activity helps our little ones with number identification and matching. They will choose a card, identify the number, and then cover the matching numbers on the card. (We used Halloween mini erasers for this). You can also pair this activity with a Halloween sensory bin by hiding the cards in the bin for your little one to find. Incorporating different senses during learning not only helps keep their focus, but it also helps them retain the information.

Halloween 2D shapes activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Are you Team Candy Corn or Team No Way?! I actually love candy corn, which is one of the reasons I created this game! Your little one will choose a card, name the 2D shape, and use a clothespin to clip the matching shape. We also kept the clothespins in a small cauldron to go along with our Halloween theme!

Halloween addition activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Trick or Treat … counting sure is neat! This Trick or Treat math activity is perfect for our little ones to practice their counting skills. They will slide the slider, identify the number they see in the small window, and add that many pieces of candy to the jack-o-lantern. There are different number strips you can use depending on your little one’s level, including numbers 1-10, 11-20, addition, and subtraction. We used candy mini erasers that worked great, but you could real pieces of candy instead to increase the fun (and then eat them when you’re done!) Educational and delicious!

Halloween color sorting activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

This hands-on sorting activity was so easy to put together! I printed out these colorful baby monsters (this clip art is free from Creative Clips on Teachers Pay Teachers ), then I taped them to my mini cauldrons . I added some pom poms to a spiderweb bowl I found at the Dollar Tree, grabbed some mini tongs , and let my little guy get to work sorting the pom poms. Sorting and classifying is an important math skill, and this was a fun way to practice it.

PRESCHOOL HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES: SENSORY & HANDS-ON IDEAS

Halloween gross motor activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

How fast can we get all the spiders out of the web? That’s what this Spider Webs Race is all about! Your little ones will use the mini tongs to grab the spiders out of the spider webs and run to place them in a cup on the other side of the room. Don’t be scared to play…I promise these spiders won’t bite!

Halloween water play for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Let your littles’ imagination brew and bubble for this Witch’s Brew water play! Simply add water to a big plastic bin, then add in some black food coloring to make it look spooky. Place in whatever Halloween toys you have and let your kids explore and create! We used our plastic spiders , mini cauldrons , pumpkin ten frames (from Dollar Tree), and droppers . I bet your little ones will LOVE this activity and spend so much time playing and creating MAGIC!

Halloween water play for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Did you know you can freeze spiders in ice cubes?! Yep, it’s pretty much the coolest thing to little kids! We just froze our plastic spiders in an ice tray with black-colored water (although it looks more green than black in this picture!). Then I popped them out and added some to our Witch’s Brew water play! You could also have your little ones free the spiders by using squirt bottles of water to get them out of the ice cubes.

Halloween sensory bag for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Creating a sensory bag is so easy! You just add hair gel to a zipper bag and make sure to tape it shut. Then you can tape it to the wall or a table and have your little one trace letters or numbers on it. We used clear gel and added orange food coloring to make it festive!

Halloween craft for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

How cute is this handprint? My daughter made it when she was in kindergarten, and I knew I would bring it back out every Halloween! First, help your little one paint their hand with white paint , then have them make a handprint on black paper.

Using an orange piece of paper, cut out the shape of a pumpkin. Tape the black paper to the back of the orange paper, add googly eyes , and you’ve just created the cutest Halloween craft for preschool, pre-k, or kindergarten!

Halloween spider craft for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

We loved creating “Batty” and then using him in our games this month (like the Alphabet Arc I mentioned earlier). We created him using a toilet paper roll, black paint , googly eyes , and white paper for the fangs. This project is part of my Nocturnal Animals Pack if you’re interested in learning more.

Halloween painting activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

One of my family’s favorite traditions is carving pumpkins, but that’s not always easy to do with little kids (or in a classroom). So we also try to paint pumpkins every year! You can paint white or orange pumpkins, and they always turn out unique and special.

Halloween scavenger hunt for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

A Halloween scavenger hunt is a fun activity to do at home or in your classroom! Just type out cute little poems that are clues to the next location on the scavenger hunt and hide them around your house or classroom (or outside if possible). Then help your little ones read the clues, determine the locations, and find the treasure at the end (which could be Halloween candy or another treat!)

Halloween haunted house for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

I’m sure you’ve heard of decorating gingerbread houses at Christmas time, but what about decorating haunted houses at Halloween time? This Halloween Haunted House Kit from Trader Joes is SO much fun to complete each year! My kids look forward to putting it together and making it look different than the year before.

Halloween sensory bin for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Every time I switch to a new theme, I like to switch to a new sensory bin. This simple dyed-rice sensory bin couldn’t be easier! I made three batches of dyed rice to create this: black, purple, and gray. Then I combined them all in a plastic tub and added in any Halloween toys we had. Easy peasy!

Need directions for dyeing rice for sensory bins? Check out this post!

Halloween sensory bin for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

You can use your Halloween sensory bin in different ways…you can have your little ones free play and explore the bin, or you can add in academic activities (like the Halloween vocabulary cards) to increase the engagement. So many options!

Halloween sensory bin for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

If you want to create a Halloween sensory bin that’s a bit more involved than dyed rice, you should definitely try Monster Noodles! This sensory bin is ALWAYS a hit with my little ones. Read all about how to create Monster Noodles by clicking here!

Halloween pies sensory activity for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

In the fall, I love to create an Apple Pie sensory bin for my little ones. But when Halloween rolls around, it’s time to transform those Apple Pies into PETRIFYING Pies! This activity is so much fun…I just put out rolled oats , mini pie pans , and Halloween toys , and I watch my kiddos’ imaginations and creativity take over!

PRESCHOOL HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES: SNACKS

The following snack ideas would be PERFECT for a Halloween party, whether you’re celebrating with your class or at home with your own kids! Pair these with your favorite Halloween read aloud and you’re setting your kids up to LOVE reading!

Halloween candy corn fruit cups for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Cut up yellow and orange fruit (we used pineapple and oranges) and place them in a clear plastic cup. Add whipped cream on top and a few candy corn pieces, too. Now you have a Candy Corn Fruit Cup that’s sure to be a hit!

Halloween spider Oreos for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Add four small pretzel sticks to Oreos on each side as the spider’s legs. Then stick two yellow M&Ms on top for eyes (we used peanut butter to make them stick, but you could also use frosting).

Halloween banana ghosts for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Cut a few banana in half. Then stick in chocolate chips for two eyes and a mouth. Spooky!

Halloween witch's broomsticks snack for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Unwrap a few mini Reese’s peanut butter cups and place them upside down. Then stick in a pretzel stick to create an edible witch’s broom.

Halloween spooky sandwiches for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Whatever kind of sandwich your little one likes to eat, you can make it Halloweeny by cutting it out with a Halloween cookie cutter. These ghosts are adorable, but you can also use pumpkins, bats, witches, or whatever cookie cutters you have!

Halloween snacks for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Using a black sharpie, draw two eyes and a mouth on the outside of a cheese stick wrapper to make it look like a ghost. To make the most delicious snack mix, follow the recipe found in this post . Then add in some candy corn, pumpkin candy, or yellow & orange M&Ms to make it festive for Halloween!

Halloween pancakes for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

We love pancakes anytime of day, and it’s super easy to make them Halloween-themed…just cut them out with Halloween cookie cutters! Perfect for a spooky breakfast or snack on Halloween.

Halloween fruit cups for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Using a sharpie, draw a jack-o-lantern face on the top of an orange fruit cup (these are peaches). So easy but so much fun for kids!

Halloween veggie tray for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

My amazing friend Ashley ( Intuitive.Nutritionist on Instagram ) created this Halloween veggie tray for our Halloween party. I’m so impressed with her creativity and talent!

6 Halloween Math Activities for Preschoolers to Enchant Learning

There were a few years of my life where I was too cool to dress up for Halloween. You can probably guess which ones. But I’ve realized that the fun of Halloween is not in the candy (unless it’s a Twix); it’s in the magic of dressing up as someone or something else. Yeah, I like to get a few good scares in, but I LOVE getting that costume on. And this Halloween theme just lends itself to that magic of being an imaginative being or creature. So let’s pretend to be witches, mummies, or monsters as we enchant and excite our kiddos with these Halloween math activities for preschoolers.

Halloween math activities for preschoolers that include hooking chains onto counting bats, unwrapping mummies to count dots, witch's stew sensory bin with eyeballs, skeleton tongs, and bats, and pumpkin counting chains.

Counting Sensory Bin

🧙🏻‍♂️ We’ve been waiting…

If there’s one thing we look forward to every year, it’s Halloween. Halloween just means creativity oozes out, and we get to immerse ourselves in the world of:

🦄 fantasy 💭 imagination 🧪 potions 🤪 FUN!

And how can we as teachers do this while still teaching our little ones?

🕷 Witch’s Stew! 🕷

Talking of magic. My little ones have been begging to make this for months. Last night, they played with this sensory bin for a solid hour! Life saver!

It’s not only fun, it hits on these important skills: ✅ one-to-one correspondence ✅ counting ✅ “reading” vocabulary ✅ following multi-step directions

So if you are looking for a fun, engaging sensory bin that still hits on those important preschool skills, check this out now!

Halloween Math Activities for Preschoolers

Mummy Math is a Halloween math center that includes printouts of mummies with dots on them for students to count and color on a recording sheet.

Mummies are pretty cool on their own. I’ve always wanted to go to Egypt to see the pyramids and the mummies. But mummies that you get to unwrap? It will be one of those mic-drop teacher moments .

As your preschoolers unravel these adorable mummies, they will see some colored dots. Count the dots and subitize when possible. Then, find the corresponding number on the recording sheet. Color the mummy the same color as the dots, and then wrap it back up again.

Tip: For higher numbers (these mummies go up to 20), use a dry erase marker to dot the dots as your little ones count.

You’ll feel se-Nile if you don’t set up this Halloween math activity for your preschoolers, so just grab it now!

  • Mummy Math Number Match
  • Optional: gauze or cheesecloth

make 10 Bats

Fine motor counting & adding.

Make 10 Bats includes ten frame cards with some bats printed. Students add in the missing number of bats to make 10. It also includes counting bats with 10 holes in them. Preschoolers hang the number of links from the wings to match the number.

It takes a great deal of concentration to get these linking chains hooked onto the flying bats. And after they are all counted and hooked on to match the numeral on the bat, they look like they’re ready to go to a party with their earrings , as my daughter said.

This Halloween math activity is simple enough to set up. Just laminate the bats and punch holes in the designated spots – 5 on each wing. Little do our preschoolers know that they are building number sense as they hook on the bat’s earrings. LOL.

For students who have mastered counting, they can make 10 with these bat ten frames (pictured on the bottom). First, they can see from the ten frame that the first number in the equation is the number of bats already in the ten frame. Then, they can add little plastic bat counters to fill the ten frame and count the total number added. This number can be written in the addition number sentence at the bottom to make 10!

Counting & Comparing Lengths

math activities for preschoolers halloween

Fall is my favorite season, partly because of the beautiful weather and vibrantly changing leaves, but also because of the activities. Corn mazes, apple picking, leaf jumping, and decorating for Halloween make our family fun weekends awesome!

But fall is incomplete with going to the pumpkin patch! And this next activity will definitely create that same air of excitement.

For beginners, just link together the corresponding number of green chains to make vines for the numbered pumpkins.

For students working on more advanced skills, count the number of pumpkins in the ten frames. Then, find the matching numbered pumpkin and hook in on with the corresponding number of “vines.” Finally, compare the numbers by looking at the length of the vines.

So many skills growing at the pumpkin patch with this math activity for preschool or even kindergarten.

If you are getting black boxes around the clipart it is because you are printing from a preview and not a pdf reader. I always recommend Adobe.

7 Halloween Math Activities for Kids to Engage in During Holidays

Created: December 17, 2023

Last updated: January 2, 2024

Halloween Math Activities for Kids

Halloween is the first major holiday of the academic year and a fantastic experience for teachers and students. Creative math teachers capitalize on students’ high spirits and enthusiasm to introduce fun learning exercises during the holiday. If you are a parent or teacher interested in ensuring your kids don’t stop learning even while having spooky fun, consider the following seven fun Halloween math activities.

Halloween Trivia Game

If you need exciting Halloween math activities 5th grade students will enjoy, the Halloween Trivia game is an excellent pick. Rather than reviewing math concepts, the game gets kids working together to answer Halloween-themed questions. When a group answers a question, they check it with the response of the other group and bet on the correct answer. Children can earn points for their answers and the ones they wagered. Many people refer to this activity as Guesses and Wagers.

Math for Kids

Coordinate Graphing

This Halloween math activity is mainly for 8th graders. Because there’s much graphing in the 8th grade, this game offers something kids can do after their benchmark test. Kids don’t know what they are drawing until they trace the coordinates. Coordinate Graphing typically takes a while to complete, but the suspense makes it worth the wait.

Depending on the graphing activity you want to use and bearing in mind that some require more work than others, you can differentiate the guidelines of these activities. It is critical to give kids a heads-up on locating the coordinate point beforehand. And you can let the kids color the graph to produce a masterpiece.

Counting Hands

The Counting Hands Dice activity is one of the great Halloween math activities 3rd grade kids may enjoy. This exercise requires kids to create scary manipulatives with a bag of mixed beans, gloves, dice, a spoon, and rubber bands. This activity gives kids much-needed visuals while counting.

Fill the gloves with beans, but not too much so that the glove fingers would be tough to fold. Tie the wrist end with rubber bands and place the gloves on a board or black surface with plus and minus signs between them. Then fold specific fingers on the glove while the kids add or subtract the ones still standing, just like they would while counting on their hands.

Halloween guessing game

Halloween guessing game is one of the several free Halloween math activities you can practice with your kids. It involves kids guessing the weight of a candy bag. You need a scale and pencil to play this game.

Kids play this game by guessing the weight of a candy bag after a trick-or-treat stash. After guessing, you should weigh the bag to determine its actual weight. You can decide to let the kids write down the weight or determine who has the heaviest bag.

If more than one child plays the game, competition may arise. In that case, rather than weighing candy bags one after another, you can put the candies in a bowl and then ask the participants to guess the total weight of the sweets and weigh them afterwards. That way, everyone wins.

Pumpkin farm Halloween math game

This exciting Halloween math game is reminiscent of the old pumpkin farm. It is one of the many Halloween math activities 2nd grade kids will enjoy, and you can download and print the game pages and instructions online. You need a pencil or marker, a visual barrier or file folders, and scissors.

Cut the pumpkin games pages from the printout. Help the kids set up a visual block with the file folder or any other opaque barrier to ensure opponents can’t see their boards. After each kid gets a game board and a few pumpkins to hide, they should try to guess where each other’s pumpkin is growing. Correct answer to where a fat pumpkin grows gives 5 points, while a thin pumpkin is worth 2 points.

Candy Craze Comparisons

The candy craze comparison game is one of the Halloween math activities 4th grade students should learn. The game is perfect for the whole class or small groups and combines skills and luck. Each kid should get a mat with seven spaces made with tape or glue. Then, they must take turns drawing cards with the numbers 1-9 to achieve the highest sum.

Each time a kid chooses a card, they will place it on their mat and can’t move it anymore. After the kids have filled their carpet holes, they can record and compare the numbers. To ensure that this Halloween activity has the ideal impact on kids, the participants should read the numbers aloud as they arrange them from the lowest to the highest.

Trick or Treat

Tricky or treat is one of the most famous Halloween math activities for preschoolers and kids of all ages. Most people don’t play it with the intention of learning math, but you can up the ante by creating and writing True or False math statements on a card. Then place the card in a Halloween-themed bag.

Afterward, pull out a True or False statement from the bag throughout the day. Present these questions for the kids to answer, and if they answer correctly, they can take a treat from the basket. This activity will ensure the kids actively participate in the Halloween festivities while rewarding their math skills.

HALLOWEEN MATH ACTIVITY #1: PUMPKIN SORTING

  • REAL PUMPKINS OF VARYING SIZES (alternative: cut out paper pumpkins of varying sizes instead)
  • 3 PAPER SIGNS THAT READ: “SMALL”, “MEDIUM” AND “LARGE”

teaching kids about pumpkin sizes

VERSION #1: Show the kids your 3 signs (small, medium, large) and talk about what each one says. Present the pumpkins (paper or real) of various sizes to the kids. Ask the kids to sort the pumpkins into three groups: small, medium and large. When you are finished, talk about which group has the most ? Which has the least ?

VERSION #2: Show the kids your 3 signs (small, medium, large) and talk about what each one says. Present the pumpkins (paper or real) of various sizes to the kids. Ask the kids to line up the pumpkins from smallest to biggest (or biggest to smallest). Encourage teamwork and problem solving.

Dear Parents,

Today we had fun working with different sizes of pumpkins! First we focused on an early math skill known as “ seriation “. That’s just a fancy word for comparing more than two objects and putting them in a logical order. One day it will help us understand that numbers can also go in order. Next, we organized our pumpkins by size and used words like “small, medium and large” to help us. This is known as “ classification “; grouping items in a logical way…in this case it was by size.

COUNTING WITH CANDY CORN

math activities for preschool with candy corn

Set up a workstation tray . Place a small dish of candy corn in the middle. Place foam pumpkin cut-outs no the tray and assign a number to each one. Kids can count out the candy corn to match the number on the pumpkin.

Today we worked on some 1:1 counting using candy corn. This activity covered so many skills in a short amount of time! First, recognizing the written number on the pumpkin (number recognition), then counting out the number of candy corn to match (1:1 correspondence).

How to Add a Halloween Theme to Math

Adding a Halloween theme to your kindergarteners’ math lessons in your homeschool can make learning more engaging and fun. Here’s how you can add the Halloween spirit into your math activities:

Counting Jack-o’-Lanterns : Use plastic or paper jack-o’-lanterns as manipulatives for counting exercises. Have your kindergarteners count and arrange the jack-o’-lanterns in various patterns, practicing their counting skills while enjoying the festive theme.

Candy Corn Addition : Utilize candy corn as a hands-on tool for introducing simple addition. Give your child a set of candy corn pieces and let them create addition equations, such as 2 + 3 = __, using the candy corn as counters. They can then count the total number of candy corns to find the answer.

Spooky Shape Sorting : Introduce basic shapes by incorporating Halloween-themed objects like bats, ghosts, and pumpkins. Encourage your child to sort and classify these objects based on their shapes. They can also create their own spooky shape pictures using cut-out shapes.

Monster Measurement : Add measurement skills by creating monster-themed measuring tasks. Provide various Halloween-themed objects like toy spiders, witches’ hats, or mini skeletons. Ask your child to measure the length, height, or width of these objects using non-standard units such as candy corns or ghost cut-outs.

By infusing Halloween elements into your kindergarteners’ math lessons, you can create an immersive and exciting learning experience.

Planning for Your Preschool Halloween Theme

It’s that time of year again!

The weather’s getting colder, the leaves are changing, and teachers and parents everywhere are being asked, “Is it Halloween yet?!”

You’re probably already being regaled with descriptions of the kids’ Halloween costumes, too, aren’t you? I love preschoolers’ enthusiasm for dressing up!

Use the kids’ enthusiasm for all-things-Halloween and plan some super engaging Halloween activities for preschoolers.

Why a Halloween Theme?

As I just mentioned, you’re probably already seeing how excited preschoolers can be about Halloween.

That excitement means they’re going to be interested in what you’re planning. Which means more engagement and more meaning for your students.

Plus, you can add such a variety of topics when you’re planning the Halloween activities:

Okay, I’ll stop there. But you can see how this holiday can be used to teach and explore so many topics.

Now, if you work in a school that doesn’t permit holidays, or there are other reasons you cannot include a Halloween theme . . . that’s okay.

Choose the related themes that make the most sense for you, your students, and the school where you work. For example, teaching a spider theme or a bat theme doesn’t have to correlate with Halloween at all.

Special Materials to Have on Hand

I’m a big believer in using what you already have in the classroom to teach any and all themes.

But it is also nice to supplement when you can. So if you’re able to, consider bringing in some of the items listed below. You can do this by asking parents to donate or lend things, touching base with your administrator, bringing things in from home, or even talking to local businesses about contributing to your classroom.

Here are some suggestions (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):

  • Children’s Halloween costumes
  • Old adult clothes to use in place of costumes
  • Spider and bat rings
  • Halloween-themed mini erasers
  • Witch fingers
  • Simple foam masks
