The different classes of travel offered by delta air lines.

The US legacy carrier offers a variety of different cabins across its fleet.

Delta A350

Delta Air Lines

  • Delta Air Lines offers different classes of travel, including Basic Economy, Main Cabin, Delta Comfort+, Domestic First Class, Premium Select, and Delta One.
  • Basic Economy is the cheapest fare class with fewer amenities and seat selection restrictions. Main Cabin offers advanced seat selection and other benefits.
  • Delta Comfort+ provides extra legroom, priority boarding, and dedicated overhead bin space. Domestic First Class offers spacious seats and additional amenities like fine dining and expedited baggage service.

Airline cabins have greatly expanded from the days of just economy and first class. Today, carriers have several different classes and different seats depending on the aircraft and travel distance. Delta Air Lines has adopted this over the years, with three classes on international flights and two on domestic or regional flights. Here's the breakdown.

Basic economy

Basic economy is technically a fare class, not a different cabin. Booking the cheapest ticket means no checked bags, one carry-on, no cancelations, and no free seat selection until check-in. Amenities vary by distance, so expect meals and snacks on long-haul routes, but just soft drinks on domestic services.

Your seat will vary significantly depending on where you're flying, but is the same as every other economy class passenger's seat. On regional CRJ-200/700/900, expect a tighter 2-2 layout, a standard 3-3 on the mainline narrowbodies like the 737, and 2-3-2 or 3-3-3 on widebodies like the A350 or A330neo.

48832613952_a364306331_o

Across the fleet, you can expect to get 30" to 32" of pitch on all planes, from the CRJ-900s to the A350-900s. It's certainly not the most, but it's in line with the competition as well.

Delta's Main Cabin experience is a step up from basic economy, as it allows you to choose where you sit in advance. You'll also get benefits like earlier boarding, free date changes, and advance seat assignments (except Preferred and Comfort+ seats).

For a small fee, passengers can also choose a Preferred Seat. These are typically located near the front of the plane, or in emergency exit rows, which offer more legroom.

Delta Comfort+

Booking a Delta Comfort+ ticket is where the added extras really start to kick in . For example, this class of travel gets you priority boarding. Furthermore, once you're onboard the aircraft, you'll have a seat that reclines up to 50% further than standard Main Cabin seats and offers up to four inches more legroom. Comfort+ seats are located at the right of the front of the economy cabin on all of Delta's aircraft.

Comfort+ passengers are allocated dedicated overhead bin space to keep their belongings conveniently close. This is always a welcome relief on busy flights when such space is at a premium. Early boarding also means skipping the dreaded gate check, allowing you to take your carry-on all the way to the destination.

On long-haul international flights, in addition to a sleep kit, passengers are also given an amenity kit. This contains useful items such as eyeshades, earplugs, a toothbrush, and toothpaste.

Domestic First Class

On domestic aircraft, Delta offers two cabins: Main Cabin and First. Hard product-wise, the First cabin is laid out in a 2-2 configuration. Each seat features a leather recliner, and Delta's newest A321neos even have seat dividers and pod-style privacy guards.

You'll also benefit from accelerated check-in, security, and baggage handling. You'll have a spacious seat with up to eight inches of extra legroom, a pre-set pillow, an in-seat power port, and an entertainment screen of up to 13 inches. This is typically the best cabin on Delta's narrowbodies, although certain Boeing 757s are fitted with the luxurious Delta One product.

Complimentary drinks, snacks, and fine dining meal options are available on all flights, as well as more personalized service. On arrival at your destination, an expedited baggage service ensures that you get your luggage first. Particularly on longer hops, these various aspects can make first class worth the upgrade.

Delta Premium Select

Better known as premium economy, Premium Select is offered on Delta's widebodies, and got a perky upgrade in 2022 . The seats are fairly similar to the domestic first class seats, with leather recliners, 13" entertainment screens, and an adjustable legrest.

Fine dining meal options are served on premium flatware for an enhanced experience. You'll receive a complimentary Tumi amenity kit with Malin & Goetz travel essentials, socks, eyeshades, a hand cleansing towelette, and more. On long-haul flights, this can represent an excellent compromise for those who want more comfort than economy class without having to pay for lie-flat seats.

Delta Premium Select Boeing 767

Sitting at the top of the hierarchy in terms of Delta's classes of travel, the top-tier service on international and select domestic long-haul flights is Delta One. The airline's flagship business class product has plenty of benefits on the ground, like access to Sky Clubs and priority access through check-in and security.

Onboard, you can stretch out on the 180-degree lie-flat seats, with a duvet and soft pillows, all enclosed in a pod with a door. The seat has been rated as one of the best in the US, and with solid service and meal selections out of its hubs, it has quickly become a fan favorite (assuming you can pick up the tab!).

Delta’s first class and Delta Comfort+ products offer an improved onboard experience and are instrumental in the SkyMiles Medallion program for elite passengers to be rewarded with upgrades, depending on availability. Both classes share some important differences, so it’s key to understand what each type of extra legroom seat means for your travel experience.

Let’s compare Delta Comfort+ and first class when flying on Delta Air Lines, review the benefits of each, and offer things to keep in mind while you go through the ticket purchase process.

In many cases, you may want to purchase a ticket type over the other based on how you’d like to travel. Some Medallion elite benefits apply to both seat types, too, so you’ll want to know how your perks apply when you get upgraded.

Delta Classes of Service

Before looking at Delta Comfort+ and first-class and how they compare, it’s important to differentiate between each class of service.

Delta One is Delta’s  highest level of service , which features flat-bed seats, chef-inspired meals, Sky Club lounge access , and a less-crowded onboard cabin. The Delta One experience can be found on coast-to-coast routes, as well as most long-haul international flights.

First class is Delta’s premium cabin offering for flights within the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and some local South American destinations. First class features wider seats, onboard meals, and attentive service.

Delta Air Lines First Class

Delta Comfort+ seats are extra legroom seats within the Main Cabin  that also feature an enhanced refreshment service.

In the Main Cabin, most travelers will be seated in standard coach configuration seats. On narrow-body aircraft, this is usually in a 3-3 configuration and on regional jets, this tends to be a 2-2 format.

Here is a comparison chart of the different levels of seating, excluding Delta Premium Select:

There are several ways you can purchase a Delta Comfort+ or first class seat:

  • As you purchase your ticket, you may be prompted to use miles or pay a small incremental amount to upgrade , depending on the ticket. This is designed to upsell you throughout the purchase process.
  • After purchase, you can upgrade using miles, depending on if there is space available.
  • To upgrade into first class, you can use a Delta Regional Upgrade or Global Upgrade certificate (given to some elites annually) to confirm a first class seat in advance.
  • If you’re an elite passenger , you can select a Delta Comfort+ shortly after booking (if you are a high enough status), or you can be added to the upgrade list to receive a complimentary upgrade to first class within 5 days of departure.

Delta Comfort+ Benefits in Detail

Delta Comfort+ comes with several extra benefits to help enhance the travel experience. While some people will get upgraded into Delta Comfort+ for free, depending on their elite status, and others will pay, the benefits remain the same no matter how you secure one of these seats.

Delta 737 Comfort+

While you won’t be the very first folks to board the plane, you will be able to board before most Main Cabin passengers, allowing you to settle in and stow your items without a mad rush trampling you.

Delta’s boarding chart is as follows:

Since your Delta Comfort+ seat will usually be located in prime areas of the aircraft, with most being toward the front, this will allow you to exit and be on your way quickly without having to wait for the majority of the plane to exit.

Delta Comfort+ seats are usually located at the bulkheads and the first few rows behind them, as well as emergency exit rows.

Here are the locations of all Delta Comfort+ seats on all Delta planes according to SeatGuru :

Hot Tip: SeatGuru is an excellent tool to use for figuring out seat maps, aircraft, and more. Check out our guide on how to use SeatGuru to improve your travel.

With Delta Comfort+ comes extra legroom , one of the biggest benefits of this seating area. At up to 4 inches more per seat, it allows you to fly in comfort without feeling cramped.

Here are the Delta Comfort+ seat measurements on all Delta planes according to SeatGuru :

Forget about having to compete for space to stow your bags in the overhead lockers — enjoy labeled bins dedicated just for Delta Comfort+ . As Main Cabin customers walk past, they’re instructed to put their bags in their bins rather than the Delta Comfort+ bins.

You can find USB power outlets on all mainline aircraft in Comfort+. Some planes have full power outlets, so it will depend on what specific aircraft you’re on as to what power is available.

On long-haul flights, such as those to Europe, South America, Asia, Oceania, or Africa, there are some extra benefits that enhance the experience. Delta Comfort+ passengers receive a complimentary blanket, pillow, headset, and amenity kit on select flights.

Those seated in Delta Comfort+ receive complimentary alcoholic beverages.

Delta Comfort+ Refreshments

Similar to the snack basket that is passed in first class, Delta Comfort+ gets a pass of the basket containing many premium snacks.

Here is a sampling of what Delta offers :

If you’re flying on an eligible flight to Honolulu (HNL) from Atlanta (ATL) or Minneapolis (MSP), there are additional benefits you can enjoy, including an amenity kit with a pillow, blanket, eyeshades, earplugs, toothbrush, and toothpaste. For food, you’ll also receive a complimentary Luvo wrap and frozen Greek yogurt bar for flights departing from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., in addition to the usual complimentary alcoholic beverages.

Delta Comfort+ is treated the same as Main Cabin for baggage fees, which means purchasing a Delta Comfort+ ticket won’t save you any more than a cheaper Main Cabin ticket.

Most Delta Comfort+ fares do not include complimentary checked baggage. Some specific routes do, so it is wise to check your itinerary as you book to see what is included.

Hot Tip: Delta has a fairly standard baggage policy for carry-ons and the first couple of checked bags . Additional pieces and overweight or oversized bags carry pretty hefty fees, so try to stick to your regulations! We’ve covered Delta’s baggage fees and policy in-depth.

Most non-refundable Delta tickets originating from North America are now eligible for free cancellation, however, there are a few notes:

If you voluntarily switch flights and Delta Comfort+ isn’t available on the new flight, you may be able to receive the Delta Comfort+ fare as a credit toward a future flight (no refunds). If the itinerary is not changed by choice (Delta changes it), you are protected in Delta Comfort+ on the new flights, unless it isn’t available, at which point you may be compensated by Delta.

If you are traveling on a non-refundable ticket originating outside of North America, please see the updated fees and policies in our article How to Cancel a Delta Air Lines Flight [Points or Cash Ticket Purchases] .

For travel originating in North America or the Caribbean, Delta no longer charges change fees for domestic and international tickets (excluding Basic Economy after April 30, 2021). For trips originating outside of North America, a change fee applies after April 30, 2021.

If you purchase a Delta Comfort+ seat, you can standby for any other flight , but risk losing the fare you paid for Delta Comfort+. If you wish to confirm onto another flight, you can, so long as the same fare code class is available as when you booked and a Delta Comfort+ ticket is available.

Delta First Class Benefits in Detail

Here, we’ll look at the benefits of Delta’s domestic first class product, though benefits largely remain the same for international flights.

Delta Airbus A220 First Class Cabin

First class is usually laid out in a 1-2 or 2-2 format , depending on the aircraft, whereas Delta Comfort+ is always either a 2-2 layout on regional jets or a 3-3 layout on larger mainline planes. First class passengers get larger seats with a larger tray table, larger entertainment screen, and more places to store items.

Here are the seat dimensions on all Delta aircraft, per SeatGuru :

The first class cabin on a Delta domestic flight has 1 dedicated flight attendant serving the cabin — you will receive more personalized service, more often. Drink refills will come quickly without you having to ask!

Each seat in first class on a mainline flight features standard and USB power outlets so that you can stay plugged in.

First class seats are located in the front of the aircraft , allowing you to board and exit first.

Delta Airbus A220 First Class Seats 3A 3B

Here are the locations of all first class seats on all Delta aircraft, per SeatGuru :

While first class is only technically on narrow-body aircraft, many times Delta will run wide-body aircraft on domestic routes. This may not include the Delta One premium service, but the aircraft will be equipped with Delta One seats, sold as first class.

This chart shows the location of all Delta One seats on Delta aircraft, per SeatGuru :

On board, you’ll receive a complimentary pillow and blanket, depending on the route, and on select flights, an amenity kit stocked with items to keep you comfortable throughout your flight.

Depending on the time of day and route, you’ll either receive a choice from a well-stocked snack basket, or a full meal service with multiple courses and a plated dessert. Food in the first class cabin is premium and designed by several world-renowned chefs.

Delta first class

Hot Tip: When you’re in Delta first class, be sure to preorder your meal on Delta.com so you can receive your first selection.

When you check in for your flight, you can use any Delta SkyPriority check-in counter , allowing you to check your bags faster. Upon proceeding to security, you can use the first class lanes in select airports.

You’ll get to board the aircraft after Diamond Medallions , so you can get seated, store your bags, and settle in quicker. As you find your seat, you’ll see a bottle of water awaits you.

First class gets up to 2 bags checked complimentary for free , and each bag is tagged with a priority tag that will indicate that the bag is to be among the first to come off of the carousel.

Whether you’re in Delta Comfort+ or first class, you’ll definitely be more comfortable than traditional Main Cabin seats. Both classes of service are great for elite passengers, as all elites receive complimentary upgrades to either cabin, depending on availability.

Delta Comfort+ is perfect for:

  • Elite passengers who may not be able to upgrade to first class
  • Passengers who want extra legroom, but may not want to pay the premium for first class
  • Passengers who want extra onboard amenities such as a snack basket and complimentary alcoholic drinks

First class is great for:

  • Elite passengers who are eligible to upgrade and there is availability
  • Passengers who want to work or rest in comfort, with accessible power outlets, larger entertainment screens, and more privacy
  • Passengers who want extra onboard amenities, such as a full meal service on select flights

Either ticket is an upgraded experience, and you won’t be disappointed onboard Delta.

Whatever happened to the old days when aircraft cabins were simply divided into first class and economy? Now, we often find first class, business class, premium economy and basic economy.

It can be difficult to decide where to sit on a plane when it’s divided into multiple classes of service and called a different name on every airline.

If you’re booking your next flight on Delta Air Lines, don’t be intimidated by the industry jargon. We took a look at Delta Comfort Plus versus main cabin — here’s what you can expect flying each class and if it’s worth paying extra.

» Learn more: The best airline credit cards right now

The main differences between Delta Comfort Plus vs. main cabin

Delta Comfort Plus , which is what Delta calls its premium economy seats, is an improved version of main cabin , the economy class on Delta. The main differences include the order in which you board the plane, how much overhead space you have for a carry-on bag, how much legroom you have and the types of snacks you get on board.

Legroom: When flying Delta Comfort Plus, you get up to three extra inches of legroom over a main cabin seat.

Overhead space: Comfort Plus ticket holders have dedicated overhead compartments for carry-on bags.

Service: Starbucks coffee, beer and wine are offered to Comfort Plus passengers on flights of at least 251 miles, and complimentary liquor is available on flights of at least 500 miles. Delta Comfort Plus flyers also get premium snacks on select flights over 900 miles.

Delta main cabin

Fare flexibility/ticket changes.

All Delta tickets originating in North America booked in main cabin or higher classes of service are eligible for free changes and cancellations . If you choose to cancel your Delta flight, you’ll receive an eCredit for the total amount that you can put toward a future trip booked through Dec. 31, 2023, for travel through 2024.

Baggage and boarding

Passengers with a Delta main cabin ticket typically board in Main Cabin 2, the third to last boarding group. If you purchase your main cabin ticket in fare classes T, V and X, you’ll board in Main Cabin 3, the second to last group before basic economy passengers.

Main cabin ticket holders have to pay $30 to check one bag and $40 to check a second bag on domestic flights. One free carry-on and one personal item are allowed on board.

Main cabin tickets come with one free checked bag on eligible international flights.

Seat selection

Main cabin seats are traditional economy seats located in the back of the plane behind Delta Comfort Plus. Seat selection is included with ticket purchase.

Earning rates

Delta SkyMiles members earn miles based on how much a ticket costs, not the distance flown. Only the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges count toward mileage accrual, and Medallion elite status helps increase earning rates. Delta flyers earn redeemable miles at the following rates.

Upgradeability

Delta lets you upgrade domestic flights using cash or SkyMiles ( worth 1 cent each in this case ). So, if an upgrade to Comfort Plus costs $100, you need 10,000 SkyMiles to upgrade with miles.

Delta Comfort Plus

Delta implemented flexible ticket changes and cancellations across the board on travel originating in North America (excluding basic economy tickets , which can only be canceled for a fee). The rules that apply to main cabin tickets also apply to Delta Comfort Plus tickets. If you wish to cancel or change your Delta flight, you can do so without paying a fee.

Those with a Comfort Plus ticket board after first-class passengers and before those with Sky Priority boarding privileges, such as Delta Medallion members and other elite flyers of SkyTeam or partner airlines .

Like main cabin passengers, Delta Comfort Plus passengers also have to pay to check bags on domestic flights. However, you get dedicated overhead bin space above your seat, meaning no more fighting for that coveted space even if you board after your group is called.

Delta Comfort Plus seats are located behind first class on domestic flights and behind Delta Premium Select seats on international planes equipped with multiple cabins. Selecting a Comfort Plus seat is free with ticket purchase.

The same miles earning rates with main cabin tickets (listed above) apply to Delta Comfort Plus tickets. As a Delta SkyMiles program member, you’ll earn miles based on the cost of the ticket and your Medallion status.

Comfort Plus tickets can be upgraded to first class on domestic flights and to Delta Premium Select on flights overseas. On eligible flights, you can use money or miles to pay for an upgrade at booking or upgrade your flight when it’s closer to departure in the “My Trips” section of Delta’s website. If you don’t see the option to upgrade with miles, you can contact Delta reservations for assistance.

Credit cards and elite status can improve your overall experience

If you’re a Delta SkyMiles cardholder , you can enhance your flying experience by taking advantage of some of the perks.

For example, those who have the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card , the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card can check one bag for free, avoiding the $30 fee that applies to domestic tickets booked in main cabin and Comfort Plus. Terms apply.

Co-branded Delta cardmembers also receive Main Cabin 1 boarding priority, which helps if you book a main cabin ticket. Comfort Plus passengers board before the Main Cabin 1 group, so holding the card won’t help you improve your boarding position. Terms apply.

If you’re a Medallion member, you can receive some preferential treatment as well. For example, Platinum and Gold Medallion members can board with the Sky Priority group, whereas Silver Medallion members board in Main Cabin 1.

As for baggage allowance, Delta Medallions receive the following number of free checked bags on Delta flights within the U.S. and Canada:

Silver Medallion: One bag.

Gold Medallion: Two bags.

Platinum Medallion: Three bags.

Diamond Medallion: Three bags.

Medallion members also receive one additional bag over the standard checked baggage allowance on international flights at no cost.

If you’re considering an upgrade to Delta Comfort Plus

So, is Delta Comfort Plus worth it? The answer is entirely up to you. If you value extra legroom, space for your luggage and complimentary booze, then yes, it’s worth spending the extra money. However, if an upgrade costs hundreds of dollars, consider whether the differences between a main cabin seat and a Comfort Plus seat are enough to justify the extra expense.

Delta Seating Chart

Delta Air Lines started in 1925 as a crop dusting service but evolved to become one of the top airlines in the US. Having operated for longer than most others, it’s no surprise that it has racked up one of the most impressive aircraft fleets in the world. And its merger with other airlines like Delaware, Southern, and Chicago Airlines further gave the company more resources to grow.

By 2000, Delta had begun breaking records, carrying 120 million passengers across 221 cities that year and making over a billion dollars. Now, with flights to six continents comprising 129 countries and 596 cities available to Delta flights, the company is taking giant strides in its industry.

Because of Delta’s many aircraft models like the Airbuses, Boeings, Bombardiers, and Embraers, passengers need a way to preview the plane cabins before booking flights. This need led to the introduction of the Delta Airlines seating chart. Delta makes their aircraft layouts and seating arrangements public, helping passengers who aren’t familiar with the differences in cabin classes.

The best part is that passengers don’t need to book a flight before seeing the Delta Airlines seat selection preview. All they need is to check on the Delta website for their route, select the aircraft playing it, and view its seats. With the Delta seating chart, passengers can choose between the four cabins available in most Delta planes — Delta One and First Class, Premium Select, Basic Economy, and Main Cabin.

Delta Seat Selection: Overview

Basic economy.

Basic Economy

The Basic Economy cabin is Delta’s offering for passengers looking to save some cash. From the Delta seat map, it is clear that this cabin offers the basics, cutting most luxuries to provide value for people who just want to get from point A to B. Some perks that passengers won’t get with the Basic Economy are the option of picking seats, changing plans, or requesting refunds.

Most passengers in this cabin merely use the Delta Airline seating chart to know what to expect in-flight, not to influence it. They also board last and won’t earn miles. However, these passengers can still enjoy complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, access to WiFi to book and check their flight’s status, in-flight entertainment, and messaging.

The Delta seats in the Main Cabin are comfortable and will suit passengers on international flights. The seats are often aisle and window seats and near exit rows. For an extra fee, the passengers can buy Main Cabin tickets and get more control over their flying experience.

Main Cabin passengers can manage their trips, choose their preferred Delta Airlines seating position before checking in, and enjoy a few extra perks. This section also serves complimentary snacks on flights longer than 250 miles and free meals for long-haul flights. Those flights also grant Main Cabin passage complimentary alcoholic beverages they would otherwise have paid for on shorter flights.

Main Cabin

Premium Select

Premium Select

Delta plane seats in the Premium Select cabin have steeper recline angles, letting passengers feel more relaxed while traveling. They include adjustable footrests on most widebody aircraft in the company’s fleet, giving passengers more legroom. The passengers can also pre-select their seats after checking the Delta plane seating chart without paying extra.

The in-flight entertainment is also better, as the seatback screens are wider. Passengers in the cabin also get an amenity kit to make their journey smoother. The meals and drinks are complimentary.

Delta One and First Class

The occupants of Delta One and First Class enjoy Delta’s best amenities. They get to choose any seat at no extra cost and can expect direct aisle access every time. The Delta First class seats can recline fully to become a flatbed, and passengers get a pillow and blanket when they want to nap.

The Delta One seats guarantee privacy with a suite-style design, and the passengers get free assistance and access to all foods and drinks, thanks to the premium dining.

Comparing Delta's and United's new domestic first-class seats

Zach Griff

For the past few years, airlines have spent millions of dollars upgrading their international planes with fancy new premium seats.

Now that most international jets sport fancy lie-flat pods in the pointy end, carriers are turning their attention to the domestic first-class experience.

delta seating comparison chart

In the U.S., both Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have recently unveiled a new first-class product . Delta's, which debuted in conjunction with the new Airbus A321neo , was the first real innovation we've seen in the domestic premium experience in years.

United just quietly introduced a new first-class seat on its refurbished Airbus A319 as part of the carrier's United Next campaign to elevate the passenger experience.

delta seating comparison chart

Personally, I've had the opportunity to try both products, and there are some notable similarities and differences worth discussing — here they are.

This is an area where Delta's new first-class seat shines. Delta always does a great job with design details, and its new first-class recliners are no exception.

delta seating comparison chart

I love the leather seat-back stitching, the multiple embossed red Delta logos and the cocktail tray that's covered with an anti-slip material in subtle Delta motifs.

delta seating comparison chart

United's new first-class seat feels a bit more sterile. I'm not a big fan of the blue finishes with tan trims, and these seats don't "wow" me the same way that Delta's do at first glance.

delta seating comparison chart

While both seats may appear to recline into a shell, that's not the case. Instead, both products feature an articulating seat bottom; as you recline, the seat slides forward.

When Delta's futuristic first-class recliners debuted, the chief complaint I received from frequent flyers was that the seat isn't as comfortable as the previous generation.

delta seating comparison chart

This wasn't necessarily something I noticed during my first two-hour flight on the Airbus A321neo , but it's something I've since experienced after a few more flights on this jet.

Delta's new first-class seats aren't as well-padded as the previous generation. I'm not sure if this was by design to save weight or some compromise Delta needed to make to add additional privacy, but this is an area where United's new seat shines.

delta seating comparison chart

United's new recliners are just as comfortable, if not a tad bit more, than the previous generation. They're well-padded, and sitting in them feels much better than in Delta's.

delta seating comparison chart

On paper, the new Delta and United seats are both 21 inches wide and offer 37 inches of pitch, but United's feels more spacious due to the lack of larger privacy wings — more on that below.

What Delta's seat lacks in comfort, it makes up for in privacy. In fact, Delta's new first-class recliner is the single most private domestic first-class product on the market.

The airline added new wings at the side of each seat that might look more like something you'd find on a spaceship than an airplane, but it's the added feeling of personal space that counts.

delta seating comparison chart

For a run-of-the-mill domestic flight, Delta's new seat is about as good as it gets at providing privacy.

United, meanwhile, took a page from Delta's playbook with the addition of small privacy wings on its new first-class seat. They're not nearly as large as the wings in Delta first class, but they're certainly better than nothing.

delta seating comparison chart

That said, if privacy is what you're after, Delta is the way to go.

Connectivity and entertainment

These days, staying connected, entertained and powered up while traveling is as important as ever. Both products offer some top-notch connectivity options, but I'm inclined to say that United's is a bit more future-proof.

delta seating comparison chart

Both Delta and United offer each first-class passenger a universal AC outlet, but I personally prefer the placement of the outlet on United — it's just underneath the center console. (Delta's is at elbow level on the side of each seat.)

delta seating comparison chart

Furthermore, Delta opted to install two USB-A charging ports, but United chose a single 27-Watt USB-C charging port at each seat. USB-C is the new charging standard, and with the next-generation iPhone expected to adopt this port later this year, USB-C is bound to become even more popular.

Delta did add a second USB-A charging port underneath each seat-back TV, but these days, I'd take one USB-C port over two USB-A ports.

Both Delta and United installed 13-inch high-definition entertainment screens at each seat, both of which support Bluetooth connectivity for AirPods and other wireless headphones.

delta seating comparison chart

Finally, while this isn't necessarily tied to the seat itself, it's worth mentioning that Delta offers fast and free Wi-Fi powered by Viasat across its Airbus A321neo fleet.

delta seating comparison chart

United has a mix of Wi-Fi providers, including Viasat, but it has far fewer planes outfitted with high-quality Wi-Fi. Also, you'll need to buy an $8 flight pass to get online when flying United.

Both seats offer plenty of storage options, and it'll ultimately come down to your preferences as to which one you prefer.

delta seating comparison chart

In Delta's new first class, there are specially-designed nooks for all your belongings. You can leave a purse or laptop in the under-seat storage unit, store a water bottle in the area under the armrest and tuck your phone into the seat's side pocket.

delta seating comparison chart

On United, there are three main storage areas — a small area for a phone and water bottle just underneath the center console, shelf space for an iPad or a book along the perimeter of the center console, and a larger and deeper pocket at the side of each seat, which is where I store my MacBook during meal service.

delta seating comparison chart

Both seats offer a cocktail tray, but United's is expandable at the push of a button.

Delta's tray tables measure 22 inches wide and 10 inches long, while United's tray tables measure 20 inches wide and 11 inches long. Though there's essentially no practical difference in size, it's worth mentioning that United's tray table offers a built-in tablet stand, but Delta's doesn't.

Bottom line

More than anything, it's great to see some innovation in the domestic first-class experience.

Delta's new seat is no doubt the biggest upgrade we've seen in years, and it excels in many ways. From the privacy wings to the larger tray tables and stylish design, you're sure to have a comfortable flight in the pointy end of this jet.

delta seating comparison chart

United's new first-class seat feels more like an iterative update, but that's OK — it builds on a strong foundation as a supremely comfortable recliner with some futuristic enhancements, such as USB-C charging ports.

As for which one is better, well, that's up to personal preference. For me, I'm just happy whenever I'm sitting up front.

U.S. Airlines with the Widest Seats in Coach

' height=

See recent posts by Ricky Radka

Does it seem like airlines are putting your personal space at a premium? Most have. The average airline seat width used to be around 18 inches. While some still do offer that you'll find a lot more scaling down into 17 inches and under.  It's become a problem, so much so that even Congress got involved last year with its SEAT Act of 2017. This bill is in the first stages of the legislative process, but if passed (which is unlikely) it will assign the FAA the responsibility to set a minimum seat width and pitch on U.S. carriers. The Act’s primary objective is to improve safety on flights in case of an evacuation emergency, but halting the shrinking seat sizes will also be a big win for consumers and their comfort.

A Guide to Seat Width on US-Based Airlines

While I’ve listed airlines with the best legroom in economy here , it’s not only your knees getting squeezed in; your waistline is losing some real estate too. Probably not in the way you wished, either. While seat pitch (the distance from the back of the seat in front of you to the back of your seat) has a wider variety and can be adjusted by the airline, seat width (armrest to armrest) is a usually a set standard dimension and won’t vary as widely across the airplane. Airlines are limited to what the seat manufacturers offer, but that doesn’t mean they have to cram as many seats across as possible.

With information posted from the airline web pages and our sister site SeatGuru , I’ve gathered up some measurements to get to the bottom of which seats offer the most space for yours . Here’s a guide to which U.S. airlines will give you that extra hip room in economy and which ones to avoid. Hint: Boeing 737s. The broader fuselage on many Airbuses allows for those extra inches on seats that can add a world of comfort over a four-hour flight.

JetBlue: Not only does JetBlue boast one of the widest seats with an average of 18 inches across on its A320 & A319’s it still maintains the most legroom of any U.S. airline when it comes to seat pitch too (32-33”). With live TV entertainment on each seat back JetBlue provides the most consistent and comfortable chair out of any US-based airline.

Hawaiian Airlines : Customers flying on Hawaiian Airlines will be happy to know that they'll still enjoy an 18-inch seat width across most of the airline's entire fleet. The exception being the new Airbus A321NEO, which offers a slimmed down 17.7” seat. Although NEO offering is a bit tighter, every seat will have USB charging and not as much wear and tear as older seats.

Frontier Airlines: This ultra-low-cost carrier has a surprising 18 inches of width across its line-up of Airbus aircraft. While seat wideness rank toward the top of all U.S. airlines, the pitch that Frontier offers tallies amongst the lowest.

Delta Air Lines: Much like the other legacy carriers Delta owns a mishmash of different aircraft amongst its entire fleet. However, this doesn’t stop the airline from providing the overall best seat width offerings amongst the big three. All of Delta’s variations of Airbus planes are fitted with an 18-inch wide economy cabin seat. Things aren’t so uniform when it comes to its Boeing planes though. The common 737 and 757s have a smaller 17.3-inch width, but on the 767 and 777, you'll sit prettier with a 17.9 - 18.1-inch layout. Delta's regional partners like SkyWest and Compass that mostly serve smaller connecting airports offer Embraer aircraft with a generous 18.3” width and Bombardier planes with an inch smaller frame of 17.3” seats.

Spirit Airlines: While you can disagree with other business aspects from the controversial Spirit Airlines, they do offer an above average 17.75-inch seat width across the airline’s all-Airbus fleet. While the width of the seats is reasonably generous, keep in mind that "pre-reclined” seat pitch of only 28 inches is not.

Industry Average

Southwest Airlines: If flying Southwest, aim for the newer Boeing 737-800 MAX planes. They feature what Southwest claims is the USA’s widest economy 737 seats, with a width of 17.8 inches. Otherwise, you can expect a 17-inch spread across the fleet of its older 737 variations.

Alaska Airlines: Alaska offers an average seat width of 17 inches across its Boeing planes; but with the acquisition of Virgin America, seats on it’s inherited Airbus aircraft features a much nicer 17.7-inch width. If you happen to be on a short-hop Embraer, you'll get treated to an 18.25" seat width.

Allegiant Airlines: Another airline comprised of all Airbuses*, however, Allegiant's seats are slimmed down compared to other ULCC competitors to an average of 17 inches wide, with some select seats tightening the belt at 16.5”. (*Allegiant also operates McDonnell Douglas MDs, but Airbuses will replace them by the end of November 2018. They also feature an average of 17-inch seat widths. Travel should be avoided on those models due to a history of mechanical issues).

United Airlines: United also runs a mixed fleet of aircraft, but they skew heavily toward Boeing manufactured aircraft. Similar to Delta, you can expect the 737 and 757s have a smaller 17.1-inch width, but with United, they also squeeze you in on their 777s with a 17 – 17.1"diameter on domestic service (International flights tend to have about an inch wider though). Flying on a newer 787 Dreamliner will only bump you a measly fraction of an inch up to 17.3, not so dreamy after all. As far as Boeing operated flights, hope for a 767 as those have United’s best offerings at 18.5-inch seats but are rarely used on domestic routes. United’s airbuses don’t fare too much better. The A320 models have been pared down to a flat 17-inch width, and while the A319's have United's best domestic offering of 17.7 inches, there are only 67 of those in service out of a fleet of over 750 airplanes.

Airlines to Avoid

American Airlines: With such a variety of planes in its fleet, it's a lot harder to pin down what exact seat width you'll receive on your AA flight. Overall flying on an Airbus will get you a smidge more room on American ranging on average from about 17 to 17.7, but on several versions of the A320 and A330, there are a handful of seats with a tight 16.3 seat width. Avoid flying the new 737 MAX and 737-800 planes from American. Alongside a dismal 30" pitch, they also sport seats that can have diameters as tight as 15.9 and 16.6 inches. While the average seat size you'll get on American is a smidge under 17 inches, try for the older Airbuses or 767s as they tend to have the most cushion coverage.

Sun Country: According to Sun Country's website, its narrowest coach seat width is 16.1 while its widest is 17.3. So if we pin it somewhere in the middle, you can expect a below average 16.7-inch seat width’s amongst the airlines fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft. To make matters worse, Sun Country is refitting their planes to cram in more seats (from 168 to 183) and eliminating the first-class cabin. While this move will mostly impact seat pitch, it will also remove a buy-up option for a wider seat so that every single seat on the plane will have a below industry average.

Bottom Line

When it comes to seat width on US-based airlines, it’s more about the type of plane you are flying on rather than the carrier. Generally speaking, Airbuses will give you that little bit of extra room around the hips, while the narrow body Boeings will have a slimmed down seat offering. The larger international and cross-country serving aircraft tend to have the most variation amongst the fleets. They can offer some of the best seat widths but also the tightest depending on how jam-packed the airline chooses to configure them. If you aren't sure what to expect on your next flight, you can always enter your flight information into SeatGuru.com for a detailed assessment of seat layouts, pitches, and widths across all major airlines.

Delta Fare Classes & Codes (A – Z) – What They Mean [2024]

' src=

Delta fare classes, also known as booking codes or fare buckets, are an essential part of Delta’s pricing strategy. They are alphanumeric codes that airlines assign to specific ticket prices, each representing a different level of service, flexibility, and price. These codes help differentiate among various categories of tickets, such as Delta One, First Class, Premium Select, and Economy.

Each fare class has its own set of rules and restrictions. For example, some might allow ticket changes or cancellations without a fee, while others might offer extra frequent flyer miles. Moreover, fare classes are closely associated with inventory management; Delta adjusts the number of seats available in each fare class based on demand prediction algorithms, allowing them to maximize their revenue.

Why should you care about this? Well, if you’re looking for your chances of an upgrade on Delta or hoping to earn extra MQMs, you may want to consider your fare class.

The Different Delta Fare Classes

Delta has over 20 different fare classes which belong to various cabins and boarding zones with varying restrictions. While fare class J is typically referred to as Delta One and fare class Y is typically referred to as economy (these are full fare tickets), there are many other fare classes. The higher your fare class, the more likely you’ll receive a complimentary upgrade within your Medallion upgrade window (on domestic flights).

* your boarding zone may be different if you have Medallion status with Delta (or status through one of their SkyTeam partners). For example, Gold Medallions receive SkyPriority benefits, which include a dedicated boarding zone (which is after Comfort+ and before Main Cabin 1). ** Comfort+ has an underlying economy fare basis code, which is determined for your domestic First Class upgrade priority.

Delta Upgrade Order

Delta’s upgrade order changed on January 1st, 2024 , and the airline now processes them in this order:

  • Medallion Status
  • Cabin Purchased (Original + Paid Upgrades)
  • Million Miler Status
  • Delta SkyMiles Reserve Amex Cardholders
  • Delta Corporate Travelers
  • Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) earned in the current calendar year
  • Date and time of upgrade request

Delta Fare Class FAQs

You will have better chances at a complimentary upgrade by booking a more premium ticket, like Comfort+. Keep in mind, Medallion status is the most important factor so, in most cases, you shouldn’t put too much weight into this if you’re not Diamond or Platinum.

The easiest way is to view the Fare Rule summary when booking your ticket. The third letter of the Fare Code code is the underlying economy class code. You can also call Delta and ask an agent for this information.

It depends on your American Express card. The Delta Platinum requires booking class L, U, T, X, or V (Main Cabin), and the Delta Reserve includes the same classes along with I, Z, and W (Discounted First or Comfort+).

So if you purchase a C+ fare and its underlying fare class is V but is 3x as much fare cost than the current H or K class published for main, you would still rank lower when it comes to the fare comparison for UG priority since underlying code is V and is the bottom?

Hey Scott, that is correct. C+ by itself doesn’t really impact how FC upgrades are processed. I don’t recommend paying 3x the fare solely in hopes of an upgrade.

Any idea how to search for flights of a specific fare basis. I want to use a companion certificate and I understand these can be used on booking class L, U, T, X, and V. When I find Main Cabin fares the details say they are something else, like K.

I want to search for flights based on Fare Basis criteria.

Hey Jim, thanks for the comment. Companion certificates are tricky to use. Like you said, they require an L, U, T, X, or V fare. Try different dates if you’re not seeing compatible options. Delta’s site returns the cheapest available fare so it is likely not a case of hidden inventory or something like that. I usually have luck finding flights that work by flying on the weekend and not during a holiday.
