A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your fashion business in order to improve your chances of success. Your fashion business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a fashion business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of fashion business you are operating and the status; for example, are you a startup, do you have a fashion business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of fashion businesses.

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the fashion business industry. Discuss the type of fashion business you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of fashion business you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types:

  • Fast Fashion : this type of fashion business identifies current fashion trends and brings them to market quickly.
  • Haute Couture : this type of fashion business offers high end fashion.

First, researching the fashion business industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating. 

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy particularly if your research identifies market trends. For example, if there was a trend towards street fashion, it would be helpful to ensure your plan calls for a line of urban clothing.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your fashion business plan:

  • How big is the fashion business (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your fashion business. You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your fashion business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: college students, sports enthusiasts, soccer moms, techies, teens, baby boomers, etc.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of fashion business you operate. Clearly baby boomers want different fashion items than teens.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other fashion businesses. Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes non-fashion oriented apparel and used apparel among others.

With regards to direct competition, you want to detail the other fashion businesses with which you compete.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What products do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide superior products?
  • Will you provide products that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you make it easier or faster for customers to acquire your products?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing plan.

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a fashion business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : in the product section, you should reiterate the type of fashion business that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to clothing, will you offer items such as accessories, shoes, bags, etc.?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the items you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your fashion business and your distribution method. Document whether you will sell your fashion items yourself through a storefront and/or website. Likewise, document if you will sell your products via distributors and who you expect they will be. 

Promotions : the final part of your fashion business marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Making your fashion business’s storefront (if applicable) extra appealing to attract passing customers
  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local bloggers and websites 
  • Social media advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your fashion business such as serving customers, procuring inventory, keeping the store clean, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to serve your 10,000th customer, or when you hope to reach $X in sales. It could also be when you expect to hire your Xth employee or launch a new location.

Management Team

To demonstrate your fashion business’s ability to succeed as a business, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company. 

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in the fashion business. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in fashion businesses and/or successfully running retail and small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Fashion Financial Projections

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you serve 100 customers per day or 200? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Example 5 Year Annual Income Statement

Balance Sheets : While balance sheets include much information, to simplify them to the key items you need to know about, balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. For instance, if you spend $100,000 on building out your fashion business, that will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $100.000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Example 5 Year Annual Balance Sheet

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt. For example, let’s say a distributor approached you with a $100,000 order, that would cost you $50,000 to fulfill. Well, in most cases, you would have to pay that $50,000 now for supplies, equipment rentals, employee salaries, etc. But let’s say the company didn’t pay you for 180 days. During that 180 day period, you could run out of money.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a fashion business:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment like furniture, sewing machines, etc.
  • Cost of maintaining an adequate supplies and inventory
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Example 5 Year Annual Cash Flow Statement

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your store design blueprint or location lease.

Few things are as fickle as fashion. Something is hot, and suddenly it’s not. Keep up if you can. If you have the ambition to start a clothing line, make sure to have a plan – not just a big idea that you think is wildly creative, but a business plan, a road map to take your idea from your mind’s eye onto the market.

Analyze Your Niche

Before you even type up that first word in your business plan, take some time to think about your brand’s story, and what makes you different from everything else out there.

“For example, are you passionate about designing affordable and stylish clothing from organic textiles? Is your clothing inspired by a journey you took or a specific era you’ve always loved? Really get to the heart of why you started your clothing brand – it’s this story that should resonate throughout your business plan,” said Mariah Bliss, a customer communications expert with Simply Business, an online brokerage that serves small businesses.

Over the last two to three decades, the fashion industry has exploded. What used to be an industry of about 30 million people now involves more than 80 million people.

“Fashion is now more accessible for everyone, but it's also more difficult to set yourself apart from the competition,” said Priyanka Prakash, a small business expert with Fundera, a provider of financial services for small businesses.

Your research should unearth fashion design business profiles and fashion business proposal samples to give you an idea of what works, what doesn’t and give you a benchmark of sorts for doing yours.

Start with Market Analysis

Once you’ve introduced yourself and your clothing brand, your plan should immediately launch into a brief examination of your market, including the competitive landscape your business may be facing. Identify your biggest competitors, the share of the market they take up, and where your clothing company fits in (or stands out) among the competition, Bliss said.

Demonstrate Customer Knowledge

No matter who’s reading your business plan, you want them to walk away with the impression that you know your customers inside and out. After writing up your market analysis, provide insight into who your customers are and why they’ll be interested in your brand.

“It’s always worth outlining customer demographics, but consider taking this plan section to the next level by providing customer testimonials. This social proof can be a really powerful way of showing a potential investor or lender that your brand already has a happy customer base,” Bliss said.

In a very crowded space like fashion, focus on a very specific audience, “not everyone or male/female,” said Kyle Golding, CEO of The Golding Group, a consulting firm that advises businesses and nonprofit groups.

Understanding your best audience, knowing what they really want and how they want it can lead to more sustainable sales and the opportunity to create brand ambassadors, he adds.

“The business plan should include more than just how to make a single sale, but how to create a community around the brand. A generic approach will not accomplish any of that, ultimately wasting time and money in a highly competitive industry,” Golding said.

Highlight Key Pieces

Got a few designs that really speak to the heart of your collection? Include a section in your business plan where you can provide images of your clothing, whether they’re studio photos or digital images. Highlight these images with information about the style, textiles and how these clothes fit in with your overall brand story.

Name Your Brand Partners

Whether you’re working with a business owner who’s providing you with materials or teaming up with a shipping service, call out your brand’s partners in your business plan. Give brief details about your partners, how they’ll contribute to your business and financial information about each one. It’s also worth noting what steps they have for quality control, as this information will be particularly interesting to investors, Bliss said.

Share Your Marketing Strategy

Here’s the part of the business plan where you’ll need to show off your marketing strategy. Whether you’re planning on running an online-only shop, working out of a brick-and-mortar location, or a mix of both, dazzle your reader with your plans for getting your name out there. Make sure you mention all the acquisition channels you’ll use to bring customers through your doors, like email, social media, digital ads, websites, search engine optimization and blog posts.

Do a Financial Projection

You’ll need to show potential investors and lenders your plan for getting your clothing brand into the black. Your financial forecast should include a sales forecast, an expenses budget, income projections and a timeline of when you’ll break even with your business (when your expenses will be equivalent to the sales you’re taking in).

Include these key milestones in your forecast – your first six months in business, first year, second year, five years, 10 years and beyond.

“Breaking down the forecast by milestones can make all that financial information a lot more digestible, plus it illustrates your thinking around short-term vs. long-term growth for your business,” Bliss said.

When drafting financials, be precise.

“Hire an accountant or financial advisor who can draft real-life financials for the company,” said Brett Helling, owner of Ridester.

Go Heavy on Visuals

As an owner of a clothing brand, you’ve likely got an eye for detail and design. Show your talents by including plenty of visuals in your business plan. From sales forecast graphs to mockups of how your future clothing store will look, these visuals can make your business plan pop, Bliss said.

Emphasize Readability, not Length

A lot of advice centers on the ideal length of a business plan, but that can cause you to focus on the wrong thing. Instead of trying to hit an arbitrary page number, work on making your business plan as readable and interesting as possible.

“Here’s why: Business plans have to walk that fine line between being chock-full of important information, while being interesting enough that the reader won’t be put to sleep," Bliss said. "So now that you’ve sketched out a rough draft for your business plan, go back and see if there are sections where you can really tease out your brand’s story. If you’re having a tough time doing it yourself, find a friend with a knack for writing who can help.”

Put the Story in a Nutshell

The Executive Summary is the last part you’ll write, but it frames your entire business plan. Think of it as the “book jacket” for your business, introducing key elements and sharing your passion for what you do.

"Even if you think you have a good understanding of your business at the outset, it’s still a good practice to write this last; it will likely feel more organized and pull in more information once you have the rest of your business plan nailed down," said Kevin Sproles, CEO of Volusion, an ecommerce platform for small- and medium-sized businesses. "There might also be a particularly salient point or poignant benefit that emerges in the process of writing the plan, and you’ll get to include it here."

Dennis Hatcher™ Fashion Designers, Inc. intends to start small in Westchester County – New York, but looks to grow big in order to compete favorably with leading fashion designer companies both in the United States and on a global stage.

We are aware of the importance of building a solid business structure that can support the kind of world class fashion business we want to own.

At Dennis Hatcher™ Fashion Designers, Inc., we will ensure that we hire people that are qualified, hardworking, customer centric and are ready to work to help us build a prosperous business that will benefit all the stakeholders.

As a matter of fact, profit-sharing arrangement will be made available to all our senior management staff and it will be based on their performance for a period of five years or more as agreed by the board of trustees of the company. In view of the above, we have decided to hire qualified and competent hands to occupy the following positions;

Chief Executive Officer (Owner), General Manager, Human Resources and Admin Manager, Sales and Marketing Executive, Accountant, Fashion Designers, Customer Care Officer and Cleaners

5. Job Roles and Responsibilities

Chief Executive Officer – CEO:

  • Upturns management’s effectiveness by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, counseling, and disciplining managers; communicating values, strategies, and objectives; assigning accountabilities; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; developing incentives; developing a climate for offering information and opinions; providing educational opportunities.
  • Accountable for fixing prices and signing business deals
  • Responsible for providing direction for the business
  • Creates, communicates, and implements the organization’s vision, mission, and overall direction – i.e. leading the development and implementation of the overall organization’s strategy.
  • In charge of signing checks and documents on behalf of the company
  • Appraises the success of the organization

General Manager:

  • Develops strategic plan by studying technological and financial opportunities; presenting assumptions; recommending objectives.
  • Accomplishes subsidiary objectives by establishing plans, budgets, and results measurements; allocating resources; reviewing progress; making mid-course corrections.
  • Coordinates efforts by establishing procurement, production, marketing, field, and technical services policies and practices; coordinating actions with corporate staff.
  • Builds company image by collaborating with customers, government, community organizations, and employees; enforcing ethical business practices.

Human Resources and Admin Manager

  • Responsible for overseeing the smooth running of HR and administrative tasks for the organization
  • Maintains office supplies by checking stocks; placing and expediting orders; evaluating new products.
  • Defines job positions for recruitment and managing interviewing process.
  • Carrying out induction for new team members.
  • Responsible for training, evaluation and assessment of employees.
  • Responsible for arranging travel, meetings and appointments.
  • Oversees the smooth running of the daily office activities.

Sales and Marketing Manager

  • Manages external research and coordinate all the internal sources of information to retain the organizations’ best customers and attract new ones
  • Models demographic information and analyze the volumes of transactional data generated by customer purchases
  • Identifies, prioritizes, and reaches out to new partners, and business opportunities et al
  • Identifies development opportunities; follows up on development leads and contacts; participates in the structuring and financing of projects; assures the completion of development projects.
  • Responsible for supervising implementation, advocate for the customer’s needs, and communicate with clients
  • Develops, executes and evaluates new plans for expanding sales
  • Documents all customer contact and information
  • Represents the company in strategic meetings
  • Helps to increase sales and growth for the company

Accountant/Cashier:

  • Responsible for preparing financial reports, budgets, and financial statements for the organization
  • Provides managements with financial analyses, development budgets, and accounting reports; analyzes financial feasibility for the most complex proposed projects; conducts market research to forecast trends and business conditions.
  • Responsible for financial forecasting and risks analysis.
  • Performs cash management, general ledger accounting, and financial reporting
  • Responsible for developing and managing financial systems and policies
  • Responsible for administering payrolls
  • Ensures compliance with taxation legislation
  • Handles all financial transactions for the organization
  • Serves as internal auditor for the organization

Fashion Designers

  • Responsible for designing corporate and casual clothes to meet the latest trend, costume design services, fashion design services, float design services, jewelry design services, shoe design services and textile design services.
  • Stays abreast with the dynamics of the fashion industry with key interest in corporate and casual clothes.
  • Researches and advises the organization on style, size and other trendy fashion statements.

Client Service Executive

  • Ensures that all contacts with clients (e-mail, walk-In center, SMS or phone) provides the client with a personalized customer service experience of the highest level
  • Through interaction with customers on the phone, uses every opportunity to build client’s interest in the company’s products and services
  • Manages administrative duties assigned by the human resources and admin manager in an effective and timely manner
  • Consistently stays abreast of any new information on the organizations’ products, promotional campaigns etc. to ensure accurate and helpful information is supplied to customers when they make enquiries (answer customer queries regarding the store and the merchandise)
  • Finds out the customer’s needs, recommend, select and help locate the design, describe a product’s features and benefits.
  • Responsible for cleaning the facility at all times
  • Ensures that toiletries and supplies don’t run out of stock
  • Handles any other duty as assigned by the store manager.

How to Write a Business Plan in Fashion Design

Many fashion designers start out funding their own businesses or obtain investment from friends and family, current customers, credit cards, and in some instances, bank loans. Unless you are a major design name in the fashion industry, your business plan should focus on bootstrapping your company until you can achieve sufficient reliable volume to expand. Fashion design is a business that requires a heavy up-front commitment of money to produce the line, market it to buyers and ship the finished product. For this reason, accurate planning and bookkeeping, and careful adherence to budget are vital to your survival.

Estimate the expenses you will incur in designing, manufacturing, marketing and delivering your first line. Amend these estimates as reality strikes while you are writing your business plan. These financial projections will make up the last section of your business plan, but are key to how you will launch your company. Always overestimate costs and underestimate revenues.

Start your business plan with a description of your company and business model. Include your legal structure, location and facilities. Write short experience biographies of yourself and partners. There are several types of fashion markets but they can be generally categorized into 7 market levels: haute couture, high street, fast fashion, luxury brands, economy, diffusion lines, and bridge brands.

Creating a fashion  marketing plan is not an easy task that can be done in a week or so. The whole process takes a long time before you figure out your business plan . From doing research,  obtaining resources, designing clothes, and looking for investors, it can be a taxing job. Success Tip: Setting Goals

Good management is the key to success and good management starts with setting goals. Set goals for yourself for the accomplishment of the many tasks necessary in starting and managing your business successfully. Be specific. Write down the goals in measurable terms of performance. Break major goals down into sub-goals, showing what you expect to achieve in the next two to three months, the next six months, the next year, and the next five years. Beside each goal and sub-goal place a specific date showing when it is to be achieved.

Plan the action you must take to attain the goals. While the effort required to reach each sub-goal should be great enough to challenge you, it should not be so great or unreasonable as to discourage you. Do not plan to reach too many goals all at one time.

Establish priorities. Plan in advance how to measure results so you can know exactly how well you are doing. This is what is meant by "measurable" goals. If you can’t keep score as you go along you are likely to lose motivation. Re-work your plan of action to allow for obstacles which may stand in your way. Try to foresee obstacles and plan ways to avert or minimize them.

How to Generate Business Sales Leads Through Referrals

To get more and better business leads network with those clients you already have a relationship with. (Note: some professions are prohibited from making gifts for referrals.)

1. Create a referral form.

A fill-in-the-blank referral form that is distributed quarterly to the names on your database is guaranteed to land leads. To help customers zero in on appropriate prospects, ask questions that relate to your nitch:"Whom do you know who's retiring in five years? Who just bought a new home? Who's launched a business?" Send a thank you note to everyone who sends you a referral. If you win a large account, send them a basket of flowers, bottle of wine or a magazine subscription.

2. Host a salon.

A salon is a business mixer for the sole purpose of garnering new business. Invite your best clients and ask each of them to bring a friend along. Because it is not easy for customers to think up prospects names when they don't know your market, send a list of the type of client you are trying to target along with the invitation.

3. Ask during delivery.

No matter what you sell, your clients are most likely to be enthusiastic at the point of delivery. (Weylman) This is an excellent time to leverage yourself. In fact, ask for referrals at any point in the sale.

4. Offer incentives.

Rewards for referrals that turn into business can range from free estimates, samples, consultations, coaching sessions to a discount on future purchases, etc. Just be careful to not give more than the referral is worth.

5. Sponsor a contest.

Enter everyone who sends a referral that coughs up a lead in a drawing. Make the prize substantial. "Make giving referrals fun," says Robert Middleton. Examples might range from a meal at an elegant inn to a mini-vacation or such.

6. Give leads in return.

This is one of the best ways to get referrals. But be absolutely sure that the referrals you give are competent and reliable. Remember your reputation is on the line. You don't want good intentions to jeopardize your relationship with your existing clients.

7. Pump prospects who've passed up your services.

Most potential client/customers feel bad when they have to turn your business down, so why not make them feel better by requesting leads. They do not see this as a burden. Just be sure to acknowledge them when the referrals come in and especially when they become a customer.

8. Swap leads with rivals.

If geography or time restricts your ability to service all your potential clients, simply pass along jobs you can't handle to other businesses and ask them to do the same. Giving these referrals scores you points with potential clients who may come back to you some day.

9. Cultivate reciprocal referrals from non-competitors.

Find out who is compiling a database of related business and ask to be included. The opportunities occur in businesses which are somewhat collateral to your own.

10. Tap suppliers.

Constantly remind vendors of your need for referrals. Send out a letter or brochure which says, "When my business grows, your business grows." Likely, reason you don't get more referrals is because you don't ask. So, ASK!

I turned my failed Etsy shop into a business that made $1 million in its first year. Here's how I did it by 21.

  • She started selling embroidered products on her Etsy shop at 17 but orders dried up. 
  • Consistently posting on TikTok and customization led to her business finally taking off.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Keida Dervishi, the 21-year-old founder of Soulmate Customs. The revenue has been verified by Business Insider. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

As a young girl, I never thought I'd follow in my parents' footsteps. They moved from Albania to the US before I was born and owned a fashion line. I grew up traveling to trade shows all over Europe.

I was always curious about my parents' businesses, but my passion was singing and acting. As a nine-year-old, I competed in Gjeniu I Vogel, a televised Albanian children's singing competition. As a teenager, I appeared in TV shows and movies like "Fresh Off the Boat," "The Wrong Husband," and "The Council."

When the pandemic hit, I thought it was time to try something new. At age 17, I saw other teenagers on TikTok starting businesses. I purchased a $300 embroidery machine with my parents' help. I thought it would be a side hobby to earn some income. I didn't expect it to blow up. Soulmate Customs made over $1 million in sales in less than a year.

It hasn't always been easy. There have been some failures in growth that were our fault. But even with failures, we've learned from our mistakes.

I had some early success thanks to TikTok, but sales dried up fast

I got the machine in December 2020, six months after graduating from high school. I unpacked it, opened up YouTube, and searched "how to embroider," I learned how to use it in a day. After a few weeks, I felt confident enough to start selling designs.

I started with an Etsy embroidery shop before founding Soulmate Customs. Using an app called Procreate, I drew designs on my old iPad. Once I had a design I liked, I'd put it on a USB and plug it into the machine, which automatically digitized the design to embroider.

I got a few orders initially, but things boomed when I posted a design inspired by Olivia Rodrigo's song Driver's License on TikTok. The video got around 4 million views, and my shop had over 300 orders in three months. I thought, "I've made it!"

Once the song's hype died down in 2021, the orders dried up on my Etsy shop, and I freaked out.

A birthday gift for my mom was the spark for Soulmate Customs

Around the time orders dwindled, my mom's birthday was coming up. I thought, "Why don't I take a picture of me and her, outline it, and embroider it with the embroidery machine I already have?"

When my mom opened the shirt with the embroidered outline of us, she started crying. She told me it would be a great idea for a business.

Later that year, in July 2021, we launched Soulmate Customs, which makes soulmate-themed custom embroidery clothing. My mom is a cofounder because she is very involved in the business and helped set up all the legal paperwork.

We got our first order after 4 days and made our first $100,000 in 4 weeks, thanks to TikTok

After experiencing the drastic fall in orders with my first Esty shop, I knew for Soulmate Customs, I had to be promoting it on TikTok constantly.

I made vlog-style content of me embroidering. After about four days of posting, we got our first order. I did a mini-vlog of making and shipping that first order. About 30 minutes after posting the TikTok, we saw floods of new followers and supportive comments. The video was blowing up. It ended up getting 3.7 million views.

I started hearing the sale "cha-ching" on my phone repeatedly. I was sitting with my mom on the couch, and we looked at each other in shock. We got over 1,400 orders in the first month and made over $100,000 in sales. It was a huge jump-start.

The business became a family affair immediately

When those orders came in, the business was still one $300 embroidery machine in my parents' house. There was no way that I could fulfill every single order on time. I told my mom we'd have to shut down the store.

My mom said we weren't shutting down. She sent my dad to look for office space. We rented out the second office we saw and have moved twice since then. We invested in four commercial embroidery machines and hired anyone we could find just to help us fulfill all of the orders. Thankfully, we did it successfully.

The business became a family affair. My mom runs the entire production and back-end parts of the business. We call her the "Kris Jenner" of the family.

My dad deals with the operations. He fixes machines, buys new machines we need, and trains staff. My older brother Kenny handles everything marketing — running ads, email, and SMS campaigns. A big part of his work is also accounting. We are fully family-owned.

Posting constantly means momentum doesn't fizzle out

I knew from my Olivia Rodrigo success that after a business blows up on social media, it's hard to keep the fire going. So, I knew creating a lot of content would be key.

Once I get into the office, the first thing I do is post a video. I post five to eight times per day on TikTok and Instagram. It's the most important part of my day.

I work with trending sounds and video formats. I see what's going viral and copy the trend. Drama also sells. For example, I've made so many drama videos where I include customers who reach out to us with their stories. In one video, a customer reached out to us saying that one of the custom orders she saw on our page was her boyfriend ordering for another girl .

Posting a lot content on TikTok has been key to keeping our business thriving. We hit $1 million in revenue in 2022 in just 11 months.

Relying on virality is tough

We've had huge ups and downs because we rely on virality, which can be tough. Views aren't consistent, so I'm looking for more stable ways to grow the business this year.

We're still trying to figure out how we can keep on scaling at all periods of the year, not just whenever we go viral or during seasonal peaks. Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Father's day are when we see a bump in orders.

As a young founder, I haven't always made the right calls

When we hit $1 million, we had a super small team.

One of the mistakes that I made in growing the business last year was over-hiring. Because we grew so quickly initially, I thought more team members would help us keep growing. We hired graphic designers, extra content creators, and videographers. I overhired, and it got very costly very quickly. It was a big lesson. Now, we've found a better balance.

My focus is on growing the business rather than college

School has never been a huge priority to me. My parents didn't push me to go to college. When I would have applied for college, the business took off and sent my life in a different direction.

I didn't start the business with this endgame in mind. Now that we're at seven figures, I'm fighting with everything I can to keep it going. It's been very stressful. There have been times when I've been so overwhelmed that I don't know if I can keep going.

Reaching out to other people on social media has helped a lot. Instagram has been a big platform for me to make connections with business people and others who are doing cool things with their lives.
