How to make a finance vision board for business

1. Brainstorm & Let Your Mind Run With It

First, where do you want to take your business?

Spend a few moments writing down your biggest hopes and dreams. Think short-term and long-term. And it’s important at this step to simply dream without limiting yourself to imaginary boundaries.

2. Narrow Down and Write Out Your Goals

Next, narrow down your brainstorm and choose the goals and words that fit your business best. When making goals, stick to 1-5. Any more than that and you’ll have too many to focus on.

Also, while you don’t have to write this specifically on your business vision board, it helps to write SMART goals to go along with your board. That means you’re creating goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.

3. Gather Your Materials

Next, gather anything you want to have to make your board. Your business vision might include images, quotes, and/or affirmations.

You may want any of these:

  • A printer to print images
  • Construction paper
  • Large background or Cork board
  • Markers or fun pens
  • Push pins or magnets

In this step, it’s time to find what inspires you most! The images and words you choose should represent your goal. When you look at them, they stir an emotional chord within to go after what you want. Now, get creating!

And finally, this step is incredibly important. Put your vision board in a place where you see it every single day. Two months from now when you’re feeling less motivated, that vision board will be standing there sturdy and strong, to help you get through the tough moments.

I replace “I have to” with “I get to.”

HOW TO CREATE A VISION BOARD FOR YOUR BUSINESS: GUIDE & EXAMPLES

' src=

When it comes to business planning, a creative and visually engaging approach you might not have considered is creating a  business plan vision board .

This practical tool is a graphic representation of your business goals, allowing you to literally visualise your ambitions and the path towards them. Using a vision board for your business is like having a roadmap to success that you can glance at daily.

But why is having such a board important? For starters, it keeps your objectives front and centre, reducing the chance of straying from your core business goals.

Plus, a vision board brings your aspirations to life in a tangible way, making them seem more achievable. With it, you’re not only outlining what you want to achieve but also instilling a sense of motivation and positivity that can power you through the entrepreneurial journey.

What is a Vision Board for Business?

vision board business plan

In simple terms, a vision board for business is a physical or digital collage of images, quotes, and symbols that represent your business’s future goals. Think of it as a visual manifestation of your business plan, which usually might be text-heavy and complex.

When creating this board, you would collect pictures and words that resonate with what you hope to achieve in your business. It could include everything from the type of office space you want to have, the awards you aspire to win, the products or services you aim to launch, to the kind of work-life balance you wish to maintain.

A business vision board goes beyond the traditional business plan by incorporating the power of visualisation. The images, phrases, and symbols you choose are designed to inspire, motivate, and remind you of your mission.

As such, it’s more than just a collage—it’s a personalised and inspirational tool that manifests your dreams into reality.

In addition to providing a clear picture of your business goals, it’s also promoting positive thinking, perseverance, and resilience, all of which are crucial elements for the success of any small business.

Why Does a Vision Board Work for Business?

vision board business plan

To truly understand the power of a vision board for your business, we need to dive deep into the psychology behind it and explore the evidence supporting its effectiveness. Plus, it’s also quite inspiring to learn from  successful entrepreneurs  who have used this tool to reach their goals.

The Psychological Aspect of Visualisation

First, let’s focus on the psychological aspect. Visualisation is a well-documented psychological technique where you mentally rehearse or imagine achieving a specific goal.

By regularly visualising our goals, our brains become trained to recognise what we need to do to achieve them. Essentially, it primes our brains to seize opportunities that will help us reach those targets.

Evidence Supporting the Effectiveness of Visualisation

In terms of scientific evidence, numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of visualisation.

Research in the field of neuropsychology has shown that the brain doesn’t distinguish between real and imagined experiences, meaning the act of visualising success can trick your brain into believing that success is attainable, thereby increasing motivation and confidence.

For instance, a study published in the Journal of Consulting Psychology found that unemployed people who used visualisation were more likely to find jobs than those who didn’t.

This same principle can be applied to businesses. Visualising your business goals can motivate you to take necessary actions, ultimately leading to higher chances of achieving those goals.

Real-Life Examples of Successful Entrepreneurs Who Use Vision Boards

The effectiveness of vision boards isn’t just limited to psychology and studies – real-life examples abound. Many successful entrepreneurs credit part of their success to the use of vision boards.

1. Oprah Winfrey

The legendary talk show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey has repeatedly spoken about how her  vision board  helped her visualise and achieve her dreams of success. She even has a dedicated room in her home for her vision board, which she updates regularly.

2. Jen Sincero

Another good example is Jen Sincero. This bestselling author and motivational speaker also utilised  vision boards  to stay focused on her career goals. She says her vision board helps her visualise the life she wants to create, which keeps her driven and inspired.

3. Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary Vaynerchuk is an American entrepreneur, author, speaker, and Internet personality. Also known as Gary Vee, he uses vision boards to stay ahead of the curve in the ever-changing business world. His vision board keeps him inspired and encourages him to think big.

4. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

Last but certainly not least, we have Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. This renowned actor, producer, and businessman has spoken about the importance of  vision boards  in his life. He said that he created a vision board when he was just starting out in his career, and it helped him to stay focused and motivated on his goals.

These examples illustrate that no matter the industry or individual goals, vision boards can play a crucial role in realising dreams and maintaining motivation.

What Should You Put on Your Vision Board?

vision board business plan

Creating your own business plan vision board is an exciting and empowering process. But what should you actually put on your vision board?

The key lies in understanding your clear, defined goals, finding personal sources of inspiration, and then bringing it all together visually.

Why Do You Need Clear, Defined Goals?

The first and most important element of your vision board should be your goals. And not just any goals—they need to be clear, well-defined, and realistically achievable.

Whether it’s expanding to new markets, launching a new product, increasing your revenue by a certain percentage, or improving customer satisfaction, each goal should be specific and measurable.

These goals are the ‘north star’ of your vision board—the key points that every other element on the board should align with.

The Importance of Finding Personal Sources of Inspiration

Once your goals are clear, it’s time to delve into the more personal side of your vision board—the sources of inspiration. These can be quotes that motivate you, images that resonate with you, or symbols that mean something significant to you.

This part of your vision board is what makes it uniquely yours. It reflects your individual journey, values, and ambitions.

What Should Go on the Vision Board?

vision board business plan

When it comes to what actually goes on your vision board, the sky’s the limit.

For example, if one of your goals is to expand your business to new locations, you might include a picture of the city or country where you want to establish your presence. If you’re aiming to win a business award, find an image of that award and put it on your board.

Other items could include inspirational quotes that keep you motivated, images of people you admire in your industry, or symbols representing personal growth and success.

You might even include pictures of the lifestyle you’re working towards—like a balanced work-life schedule or more time for leisure and family.

Remember, this is your vision, your future. So, make your vision board as unique, bold, and inspiring as your aspirations are.

What Do You Need to Make Your Business Vision Board?

vision board business plan

Creating a vision board can be a fun, enlightening, and inspiring process. To get started, here’s a checklist of my suggested essentials you’ll need:

  • Board : The foundation of your vision board. This could be a cork board, poster board, or even a digital board on platforms like Pinterest. Choose whatever medium feels best for you. If you prefer something physical that you can touch, a cork or poster board could be ideal. But if you like to keep things virtual and easily accessible, a digital board may be the way to go.
  • Images, Quotes, Symbols : These are the visual representations of your goals and aspirations. You can cut images from magazines, print them from the internet, or even create your own. For digital boards, you can use images and graphics found online. Remember, these should resonate with your business goals and personal values.
  • Adhesives : If you’re creating a physical board, you’ll need something to stick your images and quotes onto the board. This could be glue, pins, or sticky tape, depending on the type of board you’re using.
  • Scissors : You’ll need scissors if you’re using physical images or quotes and need to cut them out.
  • Markers, Stickers, and Decorative Items : To add a personalised touch to your vision board, you might want to include coloured markers, stickers, or any other decorative items that inspire you. These can be used to write down specific goals, to add emphasis, or simply to make your board more visually appealing.
  • Your Goals : This might seem obvious, but it’s essential to have a clear idea of your business goals before you start. These will guide the creation of your vision board and help you choose the most suitable images, quotes, and symbols.
  • A Quiet Space and Time : Lastly, ensure you have a quiet space and dedicated time to work on your vision board. It’s a process that requires thought, introspection, and creativity, so it’s best done when you’re not rushed or distracted.

How to Create a Business Plan Vision Board (Step-by-Step Guide)

Creating a business plan vision board, or as some prefer to call it, a business vision board, may seem overwhelming at first, but with a structured step-by-step approach, it can be an enjoyable and rewarding process.

The following are my tried-and-tested steps on how to create a business vision board.

Step 1: Know Your Goals

Before anything else, you must clearly define your business goals. These should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).

For example, instead of saying,  “I want to grow my business,”  you might say,  “I want to increase my business revenue by 30% in the next year.”

Take the time to visualise each goal:  How will your business look when this goal is achieved? How will it feel? Who will be impacted, and how?

The more detailed your visualisations, the more potent your vision board will be.

Step 2: Understand Your Inspirations

What motivates you? What are the things that spark passion and drive in you? It could be a particular business leader you admire, a quote that gets you fired up, or the prospect of achieving a work-life balance.

Understanding these sources of inspiration will help you select images, quotes, and symbols that truly resonate with you for your vision board.

Step 3: Collect Your Images and Words

Now comes the fun part—collecting your materials. Start looking for images, quotes, and symbols that align with your goals and inspirations.

These can be cut from magazines, printed from the internet, or even drawn by hand. Remember, these elements should serve as a constant reminder of where you’re headed.

Also, don’t limit yourself to just business-related materials. If part of your goal is to have more time with family or to achieve a certain lifestyle, find images that represent these aspects too. The vision board should encompass all parts of your aspirations.

Step 4: Assemble Your Vision Board

It’s time to bring your vision to life. Start arranging your images and words on your board.

There’s no right or wrong way to do this—it can be as structured or as free-flowing as you want it to be. You might choose to group similar goals together, or you might prefer a more spontaneous layout.

As you arrange your materials, think about the relationships between your goals.  How does one goal lead to another? How might achieving one goal impact another area of your business or life?

This can help you create a vision board that truly reflects your holistic vision for your future.

Step 5: Display Your Board Where You Work

Once you’ve assembled your vision board, place it somewhere you’ll see it often. This could be in your office, at your workspace at home, or even as a digital background if you’ve created it online.

The key is to ensure that it’s visible to provide constant motivation and reminders of your goals. Each time you glance at your vision board, it should serve as a nudge, pushing you towards your aspirations.

How Often Should You Refresh Your Vision Board?

One common question I get asked is, “How often should I update my vision board?”

The answer? As often as your vision evolves. Your vision board is a dynamic, living document of your dreams and goals, and it should grow and change as you and your business do.

For some, updating their vision board annually may be enough. They set their goals for the year, and those remain fairly consistent. For others, particularly in rapidly changing industries or for businesses in their early stages, updates might be needed every quarter or even monthly.

Keep in mind that updating your vision board doesn’t always mean a complete overhaul. Sometimes, it’s a matter of adjusting a goal, replacing an image, or even just shifting items around to reflect a change in priorities.

The most important thing is that your vision board remains a true reflection of your current aspirations and continues to inspire and motivate you.

The Role of a Business Coach in Realising Your Vision

Creating a vision board is a significant first step towards achieving your business goals. But sometimes, you may need a bit of extra support in making that vision a reality. This is where a  business coach  can make a real difference.

A business coach is like your personal navigator on the journey towards your goals. They help clarify your vision, making sure it’s not only aspirational but also achievable. They challenge you, support you, and hold you accountable, increasing the likelihood of your success.

For instance, let’s say one of your vision board goals is to expand your business into a new market. A business coach can provide valuable insights on potential challenges, help you develop a robust strategy, and guide you through the implementation process.

Or, if you’re aiming to improve work-life balance, a business coach can support you in setting boundaries, improving time management, and helping you make strategic decisions that align with this goal.

In essence, a business coach helps turn the dreams on your vision board into tangible, actionable steps, thereby accelerating your path to success.

Whether you’re facing a particular challenge or you simply want to keep your business on the winning track, a business coach can be an invaluable asset in realising your vision.

Table of Contents

What Exactly is a Vision Board?

The most basic definition of a vision board is that it’s a collection of images, quotes, and symbols that have meaning to you and that represent something you want to achieve.

A vision board is a tool that helps you see your goals. Using visual images can help you define your goals and focus on them in a different way than simply writing them out. It can help you  see the big picture in your business .

The Power of a Vision Board

  • The act of creating a vision board helps you hone in on what you really want. Before making your board, you might have a general idea of your long-term goals. But in choosing the images and other pieces to include on your board, you’ll develop a tangible image of your desired result.
  • When you look at your vision board, take a moment to visualize yourself having achieved all the goals and dreams that you put on your board. When you do that often enough, those images become embedded in your subconscious.
  • You’re more likely to achieve your goals when they are top of mind. When you see your vision board every day, you will find yourself thinking about your goals on a regular basis.
  • Your vision board can help to keep you motivated through tough times. You can look at your vision board for an instant reminder of why you’re working hard now and what you stand to gain from forging on through the struggles.

What Should I Put on My Vision Board?

The simple answer is anything that motivates and inspires you.

Most vision boards include a combination of images and inspirational words.

Images – Images are the most common item found on vision boards. These can be photos, drawings, mind maps, sketches, or anything else that has some meaning to you.

For example, if freedom to work from anywhere in the world is one of your goals, you might include pictures of someone typing on a laptop near the ocean in a tropical locale.

One of my long-term goals is to have an outdoor office. So, my vision board includes a photo of a poolside gazebo. It’s not the exact gazebo that I want, but it represents the goal that I’m working toward.

Vision Board Gazebo

Inspiring quotes and messages – Inspiration is different for everyone. You might choose to include inspirational Bible verses or words of encouragement from industry leaders or historical figures. Motivational quotes you find on social media can be a great addition. Or how about testimonials or nice comments from clients or peers? You might also include affirmations and your “word of the year.”

If you have  vision, mission, or values statements for your business , write them out and include them on your board. Seeing those statements on a daily basis will help ensure that your goals stay in tune with your “why.”

My vision board includes the phrases “Do It Scared” from Ruth Soukup and “Progress Over Perfection,” both reminders to step out of my comfort zone and just do it.

Creating a Vision Board for Your Business

Business goals are one of the most common topics of vision boards. You probably started your business because you wanted to create a better life for yourself and your family. It’s likely one of your driving motivations, which makes it the perfect focus for a vision board.

Know What You Want to Achieve

In order to achieve what you want, first, you have to know what you want.

When you’re creating your vision board for your business, consider the following questions:

  • What does your ideal work day look like?
  • Who is your perfect client?
  • What kinds of products do you want to produce?
  • What projects do you love?
  • Where will your office be and what does it look like?

Look for images, words, and other items that represent your ideal business day, your perfect client, and your ultimate dream job.

Create a List of Long-Term Goals

If you don’t have written goals, then grab a notebook or a large piece of paper and start brainstorming. List everything you want to do or accomplish in the next one to five years. Then narrow that list down to a few big things that you really want to focus on. Maybe you want to create a course or have a book traditionally published or be able to afford to join an expensive mastermind group.

Include Some Big Scary Goals

Don’t limit yourself to what you think is possible. Think big!

Maybe you have a goal to make a few thousand dollars a month with a work-from-home business. But, in your heart, you know that you really to build a business that will support your family, so that your husband can retire from the job he hates. Embrace that big, scary goal.

Don’t be afraid to look deep and express what you really want. When you look at your vision board filled with meaningful images, inspirational messages, and plenty of creativity, those big scary goals feel much more attainable.

What Do You Need to Make a Vision Board?

Now that you know what a vision board can do for your future goals and present state of mind, let’s talk about the actual process of putting it together.

Your vision board can be digital or physical.

Digital Vision Boards

An advantage of digital boards is that they are portable, so they can motivate and inspire you wherever you are. Plus, they’re easy to add to or edit as your goals and dreams change. Digital vision boards can be created with Canva, Photoshop, PowerPoint or some other image-editing tool.

Here’s an example of one of my digital vision boards that I created in Canva.

A digital vision board for a business created in Canva

Physical Vision Boards

Physical vision boards might be made on poster board, bulletin boards, whiteboards, or even a wall in your office. You have endless creative options with a physical vision board, but it will obviously be less portable.

Vision Board Supplies

If you want to create a physical vision board, you’ll need some supplies:

  • A background (i.e. something to attach your images to) – poster board, cork board, whiteboard, blank art book, etc.
  • Old magazines to cut up for pictures
  • Colored pencils & markers
  • Colorful paper
  • A glue stick, tape, push pins, or magnets (depending on your background)
  • Stamps & ink pads

If you’re making it on the computer, you can do it for free with online images. But you may want to print a copy to keep near your workspace.

5 Steps to Creating a Vision Board for Your Business

You’ll follow the same steps to create a digital board or a physical board. The only difference will be if you are working with digital files or physical materials.

1. Find Your Meaningful Images

Look for images that capture your intention. You might be looking through old magazines or on Pinterest, Google Images, or stock photo sites. Don’t let yourself get caught up reading articles.  Concentrate on the images and the feelings they evoke. Does it make you happy? Does it bring to mind a particular goal?

Remember, you’re looking for images that represent your goal. Focus on the idea or feeling, rather than trying to find literal interpretations.

Cut out or save the images that capture the essence of your goals.

Tip:  If you are working with digital images, save them all to a secret Pinterest board so that you have them in one place for easy reference.

2. Collect Your Inspirational Words

Find the quotes, Bible verses, or words that motivate and inspire you. You can print them off the web, write them on colorful paper, or make your own quote images in a tool like Canva.

Tip: Pinterest is a great source for inspirational words to include on your vision board.  Simply do a search on “business quotes” and go from there.

3. Add Your Images & Words to Your Vision Board

Make a collage out of your photos and words. Arrange them on your background. Keep moving them around until the layout is visually pleasing to you.

Tip: If you are making a physical board, don’t glue or tape anything to your background until you have it just like you want it.

4. Add Decorative Elements to Your Board

Use pencils & markers or clip art to decorate your board. You can draw attention to certain images, add in dates and dollar figures, or just make it pretty.

5. Have Fun With It!

Don’t worry about making your board perfect. Your vision board is for you, so have fun creating it!

Use Your Vision Board Daily

For your vision board to work, you need to use it. Place it somewhere that you can see it every day and spend a few minutes visualizing your goals.

I have my digital vision board set as desktop wallpaper on my computer. I see it every morning when I turn on my computer and every night when I shut the computer down.

And be sure to look at your vision board when you are doing any kind of  business planning . It will help you stay on track with your high-level goals.

Achieving Your Goals With a Vision Board

Having a vision board as a tool in your toolbox increases the likelihood that you’ll achieve your goals. Here are a few important things to remember:

  • It’s your vision board. There is no right or wrong way to express your goals and dreams.
  • Think big! Your vision board should not be filled with things you can easily achieve next week or next month. Focus on goals that are one to five years out.
  • Your vision board will work better when you give it your attention for a few minutes every day.

It might seem like a small thing, but spending time creating your vision board can help you focus your efforts. It helps you make good long-term choices in where to invest time and money because you know where you want to go. And it’s a lot of fun.

Close your eyes and think about a dream you have – a goal you want to make become a reality. You’re most likely seeing different images ahead of you, visualizing the feelings you might have as you achieve this dream and the things it would mean to you.

What you are seeing in your mind is essentially a representation of a vision board and you can, and you should, turn the images and ideas you just saw in your head into reality. Not just by achieving the goals, but also by creating a visual representation of the objectives you want to achieve.

So, what is this vision board all about? Let’s delve deeper into the concept of vision boards, the benefits they provide you, and the steps you need to take in order to create an empowering vision board.

WHAT IS A VISION BOARD?

The idea of a vision board can sound a bit bogus or even confusing. How can visual images have an impact on your ability to pursue and obtain your goals? Can’t you just do the above and close your eyes? Well, vision boards are actually more than just images on a piece of paper.

So, let’s start by taking a closer look at the concept of a vision board .

The definition of a vision board

How to define a vision board? As the name suggests, vision boards are essentially a board full of images. But instead of having random images attached to the board, the aim of a vision board is to focus on your goals and dreams . Vision board’s images should be images you see in head when you think of what you want to achieve, gain or create. The board is there to be used as a tool for clarifying, maintaining and concentrating your focus on these goals. It’s about making your ideas and dreams in your head more concrete.

The goals can relate to any area of your life. You can have a vision board about your business objectives or the path you want your career to take. It could also relate to specific aspects of your personal life. You could create a vision board around your hopes as a human being or the things you want to achieve in your life, whether in relation to having a family or being able to travel a lot.

Let’s say you want to become a successful CEO. Your vision board could include images that reinforce and direct your focus. Perhaps images of tall buildings, of the university classes you need to take, the industry you want to lead in and so on. The whole idea of a vision board is to take your dreams and to visualize them on a board. And there is the key to a definition of a vision board: it’s hard to define in detail, as each vision board is unique for the purpose and the person.

Your vision in life is different from my vision in life; therefore, your vision board will look different and highlight your specific dreams with the images you see. The essential thing to understand is that vision board is a visual expression of your goals.

The objective of a vision board

You might be thinking what is the purpose of the board. At the start, I asked you to close your eyes and imagine your ultimate goal. Why can’t you just do this when it comes to achieving a specific objective? What is the purpose of doing it on a board? A vision board serves three core purposes. The objectives of a vision board are:

  • To identify and clarify your goals – Visualizing your goals on a piece of board will make the goals more concrete. You turn the abstract ideas in your head into real images. The thought “ I want to earn more money ” can become a much clearer objective when you stare back at pictures of cash and the things you can buy with it, such as cars, homes and holidays. You clarify the goal. Instead of saying, “ I want a nice career in publishing ”, you use the images to identify what you mean by ‘ a nice career ’ and what specific aspects of publishing you are looking to work in. A vision board’s purpose is to take an idea or a goal you have and turn it into a concrete objective you can clearly visualize. The purpose is to know exactly what success or happiness looks like to you.
  • To reinforce your daily affirmations – The purpose of a vision board is also to act as a daily reminder of your dreams. Think about it; when is the last time you sat down to think about your goals? You probably thought of them when I asked you to close your eyes, but it’s unlikely you do that exercise every day. Who could blame you? Our lives are busy with work, leisure and family time; we can’t constantly be thinking about our dreams. But this is important in order for you to achieve our goals (more later!). With a vision board, you create a visual representation of your goals and you are reminded about your goals every day. You can glance the board and receive affirmation of the road you are walking on.
  • To maintain focus on the goal – As well as reinforcing your daily affirmations, the purpose of a vision board is to help you maintain focus. If you just think about your objectives, it’s easy to start sidetracking or accepting less than you actually wanted. You might end up saying, “ Well, I’ve now become senior manager. I should be happy about this, it has made my life comfortable ”. A vision board keeps your eye on the ball. You don’t want to be senior manager; you want to be a CEO. The daily reminder of your ultimate goal ensures you don’t settle for less and you don’t accept shortcuts. You work towards the objective you want.

A physical or a digital vision board?

So far, a vision board probably has brought you images of a cardboard cut-out hanging on the wall. Although a vision board is generally a physical board with images, photos and text, you can create a digital version of the vision board if you want. The physical version of a vision board can be made on any piece of material that allows the attachment of clips, such as photos, newspaper cut-outs and so on. You can use a pin board, a cardboard, or any sort of sheet where images can be glued, taped or otherwise attached.

The other alternative is the digital version, which means copying and pasting images to a larger board. You can do this version with any sort of image-editing software. Microsoft Paint or Adobe PhotoShop are good programs to consider.

While you might find the physical version more difficult to compile, it can be easy to be kept as the ‘daily reminder’, since you can attach it almost anywhere – ensuring you come face to face with your vision board regularly. A digital copy can be easier to forget about. You can avoid this by having it displayed as your desktop image or a screensaver! Ultimately the choice of opting for a physical or a digital vision board is up to you.

Three types of vision boards

So, a vision board is a visual representation of your goals and dreams. As I’ve mentioned, the board can be used to clarify, affirm and focus your goals in all areas of life, from business to private life.

Furthermore, Christine Kane, the founder and president of Uplevel YOU, has identified three specific types of vision boards. The types are suited for the varying needs and requirements you might have from the project. After all, we don’t all have the same kind of understanding of our dreams – some are more certain of what they want, while others only have a broad idea of the goals they are hoping to achieve.

Kane divides vision boards into the ‘ opening and allowing ’ board, the ‘ I know exactly what I want ’ board, and the ‘ themed ’ vision board.

So, if you are certain of your objective, you are more guided in making the vision board. You will be more aware of the images you want for the board, since your vision is clear already. On the other hand, if you aren’t 100% sure of what your goals are or how to get there, you will need to spend more time exploring images and picking out things that appeal to you.

Patrick Bet-David has also shared his own ideas regarding the three vision boards an entrepreneur needs to have:

WHY CAN A VISION BOARD BE EMPOWERING?

If you’re still a little unsure about the empowering nature of a vision board, let me try to convince you with some data. Because vision boards are not a silly idea, or a high-school-era scrapbook for dreamers, but they can truly push you forward to achieve your goals. Vision boards work because of three specific reasons:

Visualization is a great exercise of the mind . The point relates to the idea of the law of attraction . The concept is that by focusing our thoughts into a specific thing, we can attract it into our lives. The thing you are thinking about will translate into reality. So, if you are always thinking negative things will happen to you, it will be so.

On the other hand, if you think about positive things, you will receive positive things. Perhaps the idea sounds a bit far-fetched to you or you think it’s for hippies only. But what if I told you the world’s best athletes use the strategy to become great? According to Psychology Today , professional weightlifters have the same parts of their brain activated when visualizing a lift as they do when they are actually performing the acts.

In fact, research has shown mental practice (thinking about the performance) is nearly as effective as the actual physical act of doing something. By doing both (visualizing and the actual performance), you receive better results than by just doing either on their own. And visualization board is the visual exercise you will do for your mind.

Just like an Olympic athlete would visualize the perfect swim in his head, your vision board is visualizing your ideal career path or business objective in your mind. By creating the vision board and using it correctly, you are conditioning your mind towards the objective. You are able to visualize the things and the feelings you want to achieve and by doing it make it easier to actually achieve them.

Clarify your true objectives and desires . A vision board will also help you understand your goals and desires clearly. You move away from the abstract thoughts of “ having a good career ” or “ living in a nice house ” to actually identifying what this means. What does the nice house look like? Do you want three bedrooms or four? Does it have a swimming pool or not?

If you don’t clarify your objectives, you will find it hard to work towards achieving the goal. How can you find the dream house if you have no idea what it would be like? You’ll end up wasting a lot of time talking to real estate agents and attending house viewings with such a broad concept. On the other hand, if you make it clear you want 3 to 5 bedrooms, in the south side of the town and within 1km of the sea, you narrow down your objective. You make it easier to start looking.

The same is true for any business objective. If you just say, “ I want to grow my business ”, you don’t really define success or the objective. You might be selling one more pair of shoes this year compared to last year is growth, but is that really enough? A vision board ensures you are actually aware of what it is that you want to achieve; what it is that success looks like.

Once you know this, you are more able to work towards it because you know what needs to be done. You know not to contact the real estate agents in the north side of the town because that’s not where you want to live. The setting of clear objectives works for your benefit. In fact, research has shown how setting goals increases achievement.

Visualization is a powerful motivator . Having those tangible, clear goals in mind will boost your motivation to achieving them. An abstract idea, such as “ having a great career ”, can seem more daunting than stating, “ I want to work at Apple ”. You might be thinking it’s exactly the opposite, since working for a major company might seem like an impossible idea if you’ve just graduated.

It’s easier to say “ I want to own a car ” then saying, “ I want a Land Rover ”. But when it comes to being motivated and working towards the goal, research has shown how setting clear objectives increases likelihood of results. Knowing the role you want or the specific car model will provide you more information on which to act.

You know Apple’s hiring policies, you can contact people who work there and you can check the skills they are looking for. If you want the Land Rover, you can check the prices, you can check the requirements and so on. You can design actual steps to getting closer your dream. You can remind yourself each morning with the vision board what working at Apple looks like. You can see the image of you inside that Land Rover and feel the extra motivation.

4 STEPS TO CREATING AN EMPOWERING VISION BOARD

Creating an empowering vision board isn’t difficult. Nonetheless, you want to take enough time to for the creative process to guarantee best results. You definitely don’t want to end up making it in a hurry, as this could just lead to a half-hearted attempt and yield negative results. You need to put thought into your vision board and really look at what you want to achieve from it in order to make it work.

So, don’t try to rush it or do it with a tight schedule. If necessary, take a breather away from the project and get back to it later if you seem unable to focus your thoughts.

So, what needs to be done to achieve an empowering vision board?

Step 1: Clarify your goals

The most important part of the process is clarifying your goals. You might think this is the easy bit – you must be thinking, “ Surely I know what I want! ” But do you really ? The truth is we sometimes think we want something, when in fact we don’t. This isn’t just our own fault, as society and the people around (no matter how loving and caring) can add pressure on us. You should have a family and a career by 30 and you shouldn’t spend time on creating social good but profit, and so on. There are all sorts of messages around us, making it rather confusing to know what is real and what is not. Do you really want to own that flashy car or is it just because you think it might bring happiness?

For the vision board to empower you, it’s essential to have a vision that you actually care about. In order to visualize your goals, you need to select the kind of vision board you want to choose. Do you just have a theme in mind or are you sure exactly what you want? Essentially, you want to have an idea of what it is you are visualizing: a long- or short-term goal and in business or private life?

Once you know this broad framework, you can start looking into your goals and objectives in detail. It’s important to note that you can define how broad you want your vision board to be. Some people create it about their life goals in all areas, while others might focus more specifically on their family or career.

So, how do you know which are your true goals ? A good way to start is by answering the three big questions:

  • Who do you want to be? Define the kind of person you want to be and how it relates to your chosen vision. Are you hoping to be kinder, for example, in your career? Would you like to be someone who is always ready to help others? Think about the characteristics you want people to attach to your name. Use these as a way to visualise your goals and the associations you have. If you are creating a vision board for a team or a business, the question is about the kind of business you want to be. Do you want to focus on being sustainable? Do you want to be known as the ‘customer service’ company?
  • Where do you want to be in life? You want to also carefully think the place you’d want to be in life. This doesn’t necessarily mean in terms of a physical location (although you might want to be somewhere specific), but the kind of life situation you are aspiring to. Would you like to be surrounded by a big family? Do you want to live free from obligations? What are the physical and non-physical surroundings you aspire to and desire in your heart? Again, for a business or a team this is about the place you’d want to be. A multi-million, midtown business or a family run, locally known small business? What is the aspiration for the future?
  • What experiences do you want to have? Think also about the experiences you want to achieve, not just the feelings and skills you want to gain. Do you want to explore the world? Are you someone who wants to try out new things and test your limits? It can be helpful to think about the experiences and things you want to do when you are clarifying your goal. Perhaps you want to travel the world before you start a family. Life’s not just about feelings or material things, but also about the things we experience and go through. You can also think about the experiences you want the team or the business to experience. It could be team-building related or participating in a local small business competition.

If you find answering the above questions or thinking about your goals in detail rather difficult, don’t be afraid to look for inspiration. You don’t have to wait for the ideas to pop into your head. Gather inspiration from different sources, such as:

  • Magazines, newspapers and books
  • Online images, websites, forums and blogs
  • Your old photographs and journals

Be open to ideas, and stop and pause when you get an idea. At the start, you might find it helpful to scribble things in a notebook. Writing things down, even if it’s just a few words, can be helpful and clarify your goals.

Step 2: Start gathering your materials

Once you are clearer about the purpose and function of your vision board, you can start gathering the materials. Browse the sources mentioned above with an open mind. Look at the images or quotes, thinking which appeal to you and which don’t. Don’t be too strict at the start, unless you are definitely clear about the exact images, words and quotes you want to use in your vision board.

If you are looking for the picture of a coconut on a beach, find the exact picture and don’t settle for less . On the other hand, if you aren’t completely sure about the images you want to use in the final board, simply cut the ones that appeal to your for one reason or another. Don’t think about the image or the text too much, but just set it to one side and keep looking.

The key to an empowering vision board really is about the feeling – what image speaks to you, for whatever reason. You need to select the kind of material that creates an emotion within you. There’s no point in using images of horse to visualize your desire to roam free, if the image doesn’t speak to you. Remember to keep your ideas and thoughts at the core.

Don’t cut a picture of a dove to represent peace just because it is generally considered to depict peace. You need to pick exactly the images that speak to you and which create a specific visual image in your head . If a tall building means success to you career-wise, then that’s what you should go for.

Once you have enough material, images or text, you can start going through them in more detail. You specifically need to consider the picks in relation to your goal and objective. What was the main vision for your board? Perhaps it was the things you want to get within five years or the place you want to be in with your career in ten years down the line. Now, how do the images or quotes you’ve chosen relate to this goal?

Ask yourself the following questions to clarify the purpose of each image you’ve chosen:

  • What draws me to the image or the text?
  • What is the meaning of the image or text in terms of my goals?
  • Is the image or text something I truly yearn for?

If you have a lot of material at hand and you’re still looking for the direction with your vision board, you can further divide your images and texts. For example, you can place them in categories such as: mind , body , emotions , career , finance , relationships , and fun .

You might notice a specific pattern, which helps you identify the purpose of the vision board clearer. You might have plenty of images and texts about physical health and wellbeing – perhaps you are looking to live a healthier life and you know exactly what it now looks like.

At this point, you want to pick the images and materials that relate to your vision and remove the ones that don’t quite fit the bill. Don’t necessarily throw away any of your gathered materials. Dedicate a box for them in case you ever want to come back and update your vision board or create a new one.

Step 3: Include affirmations to your vision board

One of the central purposes of a vision board is to affirm you through your journey to achieving your goals. It’s naturally essential then, to guarantee you include affirmations to your vision board and use them as your advantage. If you can create a vision board that gives you hope and self-belief, you are on the right track.

You don’t want to end up in a situation, where your vision board is daunting and causes you to feel stressed out. Instead of looking at the board and thinking, “ How will I ever be able to achieve that ”, you want to say to yourself, “ I can achieve that and I will achieve it ”. The affirmation and the support you receive from the vision board is crucial for empowerment. With the daily dose of “ Yes, we can! ” you guarantee you are subconsciously working towards your objectives. You get that belief in your ability and the goals don’t seem as fat-fetched anymore.

So, how can you guarantee your vision board supports your vision and strengthens your resolve? First, you want to think about the pitfalls you think you might experience. What are those little voices in your head whispering? These are the things you say to yourself when you are putting yourself down or trying to convince yourself to not do or say something.

Perhaps it’s about you not being worthy enough, or not working hard. When you know the words you use to hurt your resolve, consider the words that would counter it. What inspires you and motivate you? Be kinder and more honest with yourself, don’t think ‘buts’ – just focus on the positive feelings and affirmations.

You can find plenty of affirmation ideas from Pinterest . The key is to focus on the sentences you can add to your vision board which talk to you and which help you in achieving your goals. For example, if your vision board is about progressing on the career ladder, your affirmation could be “ I have the perseverance to overcome problems. ” Other great affirmations to keep in mind, include sentences such as:

  • I am learning.
  • I am worth it.
  • I have the perseverance to overcome problems.
  • I inspire myself and others around me.

Keep the affirmations short and simple. Don’t pick a winded sentence such as “ I believe I can be the best friend because I’m kind-hearted and passionate about helping my friends.” Instead, opt for a shorter and more concise message like, “ I’m a great friend to my loved ones ” or “ My mission is to help others thrive ”. You can choose to represent the affirmations either as sentences printed over the images or you can simply pick images to your board, which remind you of the affirmations you want to tell yourself.

Step 4: Glue, stick and paste your vision board

You’re almost there! The hard part is over and the fun can begin! It’s time to design your vision board and create something special to push you towards your dreams. If you are designing a digital vision board, the process is almost the same. Instead of having to cut and glue your images, you can simply copy and paste them to your liking. Try different designs and a variety of ways to organize and group your photos. You can have your board and place the images without gluing them first, to get an idea of what the final product looks like.

This is a good moment to take a step back and carefully consider your chosen images. Are you visualizing exactly what you wanted? Does it speak to you the same way you thought it would?

If you don’t feel the vision in your images or outline, keep trying until you find the images, texts or designs that work. Like I’ve said before, you don’t want to opt for something that’s “ just about right ”; you need to have a vision board that speaks to you and highlights exactly what you are hoping to achieve in the future.

Read your texts out loud and talk yourself through the vision board. Tell yourself the affirmations and the stories behind each image. What does it represent? What does it bring to your goals? How will it change the way you live and work? By having to think these through, you guarantee you’ve chosen the right designs for your vision board.

It can be a good idea to think about the colors and textures you use. Different colored images and text can create different emotions and reactions. Look at the examples below of a simple word “ buy ” written in different colors.

Each color has a different meaning and you might have a different reaction depending on the color. Perhaps you find ‘ freedom ’ the color blue and you want your vision board to outline this. You could then choose different shades of blue to your board and to focus on this specific color. You might want your vision board to energize you and you find color yellow to be perfect for this. So, you should add splashes of yellow and perhaps print out the key words in a yellow font.

On the other hand, if you associate green with negative emotions, try to avoid adding it to your vision board. Furthermore, you can even play with the textures. There’s no reason you can’t add a bit of fabric to your vision board if it somehow relates to your vision. Perhaps you want to smoothen out your life and have less worries and a tiny piece of velvet reminds you of this! You can be playful with your vision board – it is up to your imagination what kind of things you add to it. As long as it helps you focus on what is important to you and your ability to achieve goals, you can freely play around with images, texts, colors and textures.

If you have a single image that speaks to you the most or perhaps it’s the key to your vision board’s objective, you want to place it right in the middle. The middle is where you want your focus to be, as you’ll probably glance at it first every time you look at the vision board. When you are happy about the images you’ve chosen and the outline of the vision board, you can start gluing in your images. And if you really hate cutting clips and gluing things together, just use a magnetic board and attach your images to the board with magnetic power! There are no excuses for not creating a vision board.

HOW TO USE A VISION BOARD

But you’re not done yet. Developing an empowering vision board is not just about the process of creating the board. What you do with the board after it is done is also auspicious for success. You need to make the vision board part of your everyday life in order to reap the rewards.

Look at your vision board regularly

Your vision board should become a central part of your day . You don’t want to spend a lot of time designing it and putting it together, only to stick it in the back of the cabinet. The whole point of the vision board is on the concept of visualization – of you spending enough time looking at your objectives and going through them in your head. But how can you visualize if you aren’t even looking at your board?

So, you need to ensure you look at your vision board regularly and spend a bit of time focusing on the images. Don’t just glance at it and think you remember all the images with their specific meaning to you and your goals. Take a good look at your vision board and spend a few minutes analyzing and thinking about the images you chose.

Why did you cut out that picture of the Land Rover? What does the image of an increasing stock market sign mean to you? By focusing on your images and visualizing the concepts in your mind, you reinforce the objectives and your resolve to obtain them.

In order to guarantee you do the above regularly, you shouldn’t just try to remember to use the vision board. You need to ensure the vision board is placed in a way that makes the effort of looking at it effortless. Yes, you do need to spend a bit of time visualizing your board, but you don’t want to spend any time getting it in your view.

Therefore, you want to place the board somewhere where you can see it without having to do anything or having to remember you must look at the board. If you’re using the vision board for personal goals or objectives, you could hang it to your wardrobe door, bathroom mirror, or even the fridge door. Any place like this, which ensures you come to face to face with your board regularly and without having to make an effort, is a good place.

It could be your garage door or the bedroom ceiling – it doesn’t matter as long as you are able to come into contact with the vision board and be able to spend five minutes looking at it. If you are using the vision board for a team or business project, you can place it somewhere for the team to see. It could be a place on the meeting room, in the coffee room, or perhaps even in the hallway. The key is to ensure people who are part of the vision board regularly come to contact with it and spend a few minutes exploring the board.

So, what is the best time to look at your vision board? You want to look at it either first thing in the morning or the last thing at night. These are both times, where you will be open to affirmation and you might be seeking for the extra bit of focus. Starting your day by visualizing your goals can ensure you spend the whole day working towards these objectives without necessarily thinking too much about it.

On the other hand, night time is a good time to spend a few minutes reminding yourself of the dreams ahead of you. By focusing them just before the bedtime, you can actually ensure your sub-consciousness continues to think about these objectives while you sleep.

Keep track of your progress

You should also take time to track your progress . It might seem like progress is slow, especially if you are focusing on big life goals or business objectives with your vision board. But you are constantly moving and with the help of the vision board, you are probably even floating towards the desired objective. The problem can be to recognize this movement. We don’t tend to achieve big life achievements in leaps and bounds.

The CEO didn’t wake up one morning to find out he or she was at the top of the game. Just like you won’t suddenly have a lot of money on your account – overnight success isn’t really a thing. Success happens when you work hard and put your focus on the right things. Even when success seems sudden, plenty of steps and small objectives have needed achieving first. If you just focus on the ‘big’ objectives, you might lose sight of the small steps you’ve taken towards the goal.

With a vision board, you want to spend time examining these small movements because they act as a powerful affirmation. If you notice positive changes, especially after you start using the vision board, you can speed up your progress further and gain a lot of positive energy from your successes.

So, pick up a notebook or use a journaling app to track down your use of the vision board and the positive changes you are witnessing. Be mindful of the things happening around you – don’t just search for the big clues, but focus on your feelings and emotions as well. You might not have managed to increase your salary yet to buy that dream car, but perhaps you notice a more positive attitude towards learning new skills or developing yourself.

Eventually, you might notice this positive attitude spill over and provide you a bonus at work. Of course, your journaling doesn’t just have to focus on the positives. If you seem to be moving to the opposite direction from your goals, you need to stop to think why it might be. Are you sure the vision board represents your desires and objectives? Are you spending enough time visualizing it? Be aware of the changes around you and make changes to your routine or even the vision board itself if needed.

Celebrate achievements

As you notice positive progress, take time to celebrate success . While a vision board is a powerful motivation in itself, you can always boost your resolve further by rewarding positive changes and behaviors. Don’t think your achievements or progress are small, but take time to appreciate the small changes you are making.

You don’t need to buy yourself a gift for each small step or take a vacation for achieving a mini goal, but you want to take time and embrace the successes as they happen. Small victories lead to big gains. If you tell yourself you’ve done well, you affirm your path is the right one and you push yourself harder. It’s too easy to dwell on the mistakes and to feel like you aren’t getting any closer.

But if you recognize each achievement and take note of how well you’ve done, you realize that you aren’t standing still or moving backwards. You can strengthen your resolve by noticing how you are actually getting closer to your vision. And if you are feeling the slump, just watch the below motivational video and remind yourself of the vision behind your vision board. Don’t lose sight of your big objective.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Vision boards are powerful tools for solidifying your dreams and turning them into reality. The process is perfect for identifying your goals and understanding what exactly you want from life. Creating the board can be almost a therapeutic experience, clarifying your head from the thoughts and desires that aren’t really part of you.

The process and the actual vision board will help you focus – something which is essential in the modern world. You don’t lose sight of what you truly want to achieve or settle for less. Perhaps above all, the vision board supports you in your journey towards those goals. It provides affirmation; you get that boost of self-belief when you look at your chosen images and remind yourself of the objectives ahead of you.

The great thing about vision boards is the flexibility they offer. You can use them for a variety of goals, from becoming a better person to achieving your dream career. The visualized format for obtaining objectives can be used for personal goals or created for a team or a business as guidance to achieving success. So, don’t waste any more time, but start thinking about the dreams and desires you want to visualize!

Manifestation ideas for your vision board

How to use your vision board for manifestation.

Everyone has something that they want to bring to life. But what if you can't really see it?

If you don't have a vision and you’re struggling to pinpoint what you want and where you want to go, it is difficult to get traction.

Without a clear vision, it's hard to direct your efforts in ways that serve your goals. It's also hard to attract the support and resources you need.

That's where a vision board comes in.

You might have heard people talk about manifestation, the idea that you can attract your dream vision into your life by thinking about it . In reality, our dreams don't manifest on their own. Achieving your goals and realizing your potential takes work.

At the same time, it helps to have a detailed vision and a belief in your own ability to convert that visualization into action . And from action to reality.

Vision boards are an amazing tool to help you create that focused vision and kickstart the real manifestation process.

What exactly are vision boards, and do they really work? Vision boards are all about intentions, and they are a great way to remind yourself of what your intentions are .

Let’s explore how to create a vision board for yourself and how to make the most of it once you whisk it into reality.

(D2C) BetterUp Blog - Top 5 Blog - Values_Half Size

Vision boards are a collection of images or objects arranged in a way to help you manifest your goals or vision. This board can be physical or digital.

Vision boards are highly versatile. You can use them to manifest your personal goals or create a visual representation of a personal vision statement . They’re perfect for helping you envision your dream life. But you can also use a vision board to outline your professional goals .

You can use a vision board for long term goals, like achieving your 5-year plan . Or you can create a yearly vision board, too.

People who use vision boards usually place them where they’ll see them often. For instance, you can place a vision board on a mirror you use to get ready in the morning. Other people will prefer to hang it on a wall in a room they use often.

woman-cutting-materials-how-to-create-a-vision-board

What should a vision board include?

The sky’s the limit when it comes to what to include in a vision board. To start, you should add images that inspire you or make you feel a certain way . Think back to the last time you looked at an image or photo that made you feel something. How did you feel? Is this feeling something that aligns with your values ?

That’s what you’re looking for when you’re thinking of what to include on your board.

Vision boards also contain quotes that align with your vision. They can be:

  • Handwritten
  • Printed and attached to the board
  • Drawn in calligraphy
  • Cut up from interesting materials, like old shirts

In addition, a vision board can contain items of sentimental value. These items can be attached to special memories you have that remind you of your goals.

In reality, nothing is off-limits when it comes to a vision board. If it’s feasible to add it to a board, you can try it. The important thing to consider is whether it will help you manifest your vision or not.

You already know that you can't achieve your goals just by thinking about them (or chanting them or writing them down on X slips of paper).

So what's the deal with a vision board?

You create a board out of craft items, magazine clippings, and other miscellaneous items. How can something so simple help you set and achieve your goals ? It can sometimes feel like magic.

Well, it’s not quite magic. Instead, according to BetterUp's Dr. Erin Eatough, "It is the concept that thoughts precede behavior. Mindsets drive behaviors that drive outcomes."

  • Vision boards are effective because they are a visual reminder of your intentions. This reminder can help you stay focused on your goals, even during challenging times. By consistently reviewing and updating your vision board and reaffirming your intentions, you strengthen your commitment and increase your motivation to take action.
  • Vision boards help you clarify your goals. They can then give you a clear direction for where you want to go in several areas of your life. Creating a vision board requires you to reflect on your desires and aspirations. By visually representing your goals, you gain clarity and a better understanding of what you truly want to achieve. This clarity enables you to set specific and meaningful goals that align with your vision .
  • Vision boards are a constant reminder of what your priorities are . You can get to know yourself a little better by clarifying what it is you want.
  • This visual reminder helps you "manifest the things you want" by taking action to get them. Whenever you need to make a decision in your life, your dream board is there to remind you of what matters to you. Think of it as a nudge in the right direction.
  • Vision boards are similar to journaling in this way. Some people find it easier to set their goals and visualize what they want by writing everything down. But vision boards are perfect for people who prefer a visual representation of that same purpose.
  • Vision boards let you visualize your success. By regularly looking at your vision board, you immerse yourself in a visual representation of what you want or hope to achieve. This helps create a positive and powerful image in your mind, making it easier to believe in your ability to achieve your goals.
  • A vision board is filled with images, words, and symbols that inspire and motivate you. When you look at your board, it should trigger positive emotions, excitement, and enthusiasm, which can fuel your determination and drive. It serves as a visual representation of your dreams and reminds you of the possibilities ahead.
  • Seeing your goals and desires displayed on your vision board can help build confidence and self-belief. It serves as a constant affirmation that you are capable of realizing your goals. As you visualize yourself living your desired reality, your belief in your own potential strengthens, which can positively impact your actions and decisions.
  • In our busy lives, it's easy to lose sight of our goals and get distracted. However, regularly viewing your vision board keeps your goals at the forefront of your mind. It acts as a visual anchor, reminding you of what truly matters and keeping you on track. It helps you prioritize your time, energy, and resources toward the actions that align with your vision.
  • A vision board can also incorporate elements of gratitude and positivity. By including affirmations , quotes, or images that reflect gratitude and a positive mindset, you can cultivate a mindset of abundance and appreciation. This mindset can contribute to your overall well-being and attract more positive experiences into your life.

Remember, while a vision board is a valuable tool, it's essential to take inspired action toward your goals. The board acts as a guide and source of motivation, but it's your actions that ultimately bring your dreams to fruition. Combine the power of visualization with consistent effort, determination, and resilience, and you'll increase your chances of achieving your goals.

Creating a vision board can be fun and easy. Engage with your creative, playful self . You don’t need to overthink the process. Your own vision board is for you and you only, so there’s no one you need to impress with it.

You can create a physical vision board that you can hang anywhere in your home or office following these steps:

  • Take some time to clarify your vision
  • Gather your materials
  • Find images and objects that represent your vision
  • Arrange your materials
  • Place your vision board where you’ll see it often

Let’s break down each of these steps.

1. Take some time to clarify your vision

Creating a vision board requires you to reflect on your desires and aspirations. Before you start crafting, take more than a few moments to clarify your vision . What do you want to manifest with your board?

Get as clear as you can on your vision . Don’t rush this step. It’s the foundation for your entire board. You will find that you get even more clarity, and detail, as you create the board.

Don’t distract yourself with other entertainment during this step, like watching TV in the background or talking to a family member while thinking about your vision. It’s important to remain self-aware as you clarify your vision.

You can journal about it if it helps to write things down.

2. Gather your materials

To make a vision board, you’ll need a variety of materials. In some cases, you can make do with what you have on hand. But some materials are more important than others.

For instance, you’ll need a board as a base. There are several types of boards you can use, including:

  • Wire boards
  • Whiteboards
  • Magnetic board for your fridge

If you don’t want to spend a ton on new items to make your vision board, it’s not necessary to use one of these types of bases. Instead, you can cut out a large piece of cardboard from a box you have at home. Or, you can purchase a large poster board at your closest dollar store.

You’ll also need images or items to add to the board. Those images can come from a variety of sources, including:

  • Old magazines and catalogs
  • Printed versions of online images

Next, you’ll need something to secure your items to your base. You can use what you have on hand or purchase what you prefer to use. Pins and clips work well. You can also use glue sticks or tape. If you’re making a magnetic board, you can use small magnets to secure your images.

Scissors will be useful to help you cut out your images.

Finally, you’ll need a variety of craft tools like pens, markers, paint, stickers, or anything else you want to use to embellish your board. You can use as little or as much of these materials as you desire.

3. Find images and objects that represent your vision

You’ve already gathered your materials. Now, it’s time to prepare them to be displayed on your board.

In addition to images, you can find quotes to add to your board. You can print them out or write them yourself with a nice pen or marker.

Are there any items associated with memories from your life that spark the feeling you’re envisioning? If so, consider adding it to your board.

You can even add craft items like scraps of fabric. Or, you can include items from nature like tree branches if it makes sense with your goals. For instance, adding some leaves or pine needles could remind you that you want to spend more time in nature.

woman-handling-evergreen-branches-how-to-create-a-vision-board

4. Arrange your materials

Now it’s time to take everything you’ve prepared and arrange your board.

Have some fun with this step. Your layout should inspire you. There’s no need to rush it.

Feel free to play around with different layout options until it feels just right for you. This process is part of developing a clearer, more detailed vision for the future.

You may discover that you’re missing something when you get to this point. Don’t hesitate to go back if you want to add anything new.

When you’re done, secure everything in place with your binding material of choice. Don’t secure your items too quickly. Make sure you’re happy with it. If you’re using pins or clips, it’s easy to change things around. But if you’re gluing or taping your materials, it’ll be much more difficult to change your mind afterward.

5. Place your vision board where you’ll see it often

It’s finally time to place your vision board. Choose a place that makes sense for you. It should be easily accessible daily.

You can try:

  • Your fridge
  • An empty wall in your kitchen
  • Your nightstand
  • Inside your home office if you work from home

Make sure not to secure your vision board too tightly in its new home. This is just in case you change your mind about the placement.

How to create a vision board online

Online vision boards can be accessed anywhere you have an online device. They also don’t require printing or buying expensive materials.

Here’s how you can make your first vision board come to life digitally.

1. Choose your tool

There are several options to create a free vision board. Some people like to use Pinterest because it’s so easy to collect images and links. However, Pinterest isn’t arranged like a traditional goal board. You can’t create a layout like you could with a physical board.

One tool that makes it easy for non-designers to design their own digital vision board is

Canva. The user-friendly design tools in Canva can help you create a more traditional board, even if you don’t have any design skills.

2. Source your images

The great thing about creating a vision board digitally is that you have virtually no limits for what type of images you can use.

There are so many high-quality images that are also royalty-free. Websites like Unsplash or Pixabay make it easy to search for exactly what you’re looking for.

You can also source images from social media accounts you love. As long as you keep your vision board to yourself, you can use other people’s images. Just remember that you don’t own the copyright for these images. You’ll need to ask for permission if you want to share your vision board publicly.

Additionally, you can search for vision board ideas online to help inspire you.

3. Use a template, or start from scratch

There are free and paid Canva templates available online. These templates make it even easier for you to design an amazing-looking vision board. All you need to do is add in your images and place them exactly where you want them.

You can also choose to start from scratch. If you do, you’ll need to choose your board size. The board size you choose should depend on where you’ll use it the most. For example, you should create a vertical board if you intend to mostly view your board on your smartphone’s lock screen or background.

4. Add your images and quotes to your digital vision board

Once you’re ready to go, it’s time to add your images and quotes to your digital vision board.

If using Pinterest, pin what you see into the right board. But if you’re using Canva or another design tool, you’ll need to think about the placement of your images.

Just like a physical vision board, take your time with this step. The great thing about digital boards is that you can undo your work if you’re not happy. You can also resize your images and quotes to make everything fit exactly how you envision it.

man-using-laptop-with-dog-how-to-create-a-vision-board

5. Save your image

Once you’re happy with how your board looks, it’s time to save and export your file. Note that you can’t export a Pinterest board, so this only applies to a tool like Canva.

Inside Canva, you can easily save and export your image for free. A paid account will let you export more types of files.

So what can you do with your exported file? Add it to your phone lock screen or as a background on your computer. You can also decide to print the board to hang it somewhere in your home.

If you intend to print your board, make sure your board size is large enough for the final printing size. A board that’s too small will look blurry and pixelated if printed in a very large size.

Now you know how to create a vision board from scratch. But it can be difficult to start when there’s so much you want to accomplish.

Let’s go over some manifestation ideas to inspire what items to add to your board.

  • Career aspirations: images from trade magazines, tools of the trade, images that represent financial abundance
  • Self-care : inspiring quotes, reminders, soothing images that inspire wellness , workout inspiration
  • Love and relationships : quotes that represent your point of view on relationships, images of loving relationships
  • Positivity : images that spark joy within you, quotes that make you feel positive and mentally fit
  • Travel : images of your dream destinations, postcards, images of planes or trains, photos of you traveling

woman-traveling-alone-how-to-create-a-vision-board

There are several ways you can use your newly created vision board to help your affirmations come to life.

First, consider including your vision board in your daily self-care routine . You can take time for yourself every morning to look at your vision board. Meditate and use the images you’ve created to inspire your meditation .

You can do the same thing in the evening before you go to bed. Instead of scrolling through your phone in your bed, take some self-care time to look at your vision board and meditate on your vision again.

This isn't magic. It's shaping your thoughts and reinforcing your priorities. It's motivating. The last thing you’ll think about before you go to sleep will be what you envision for your life. Isn’t that powerful?

When you create your vision board, you can also leave some areas blank to make room for what you want. You’re always growing as a person . It makes sense that you’ll have new goals to develop over time.

Another technique you can use is to speak your goals out loud. When you look at your vision board, speak affirmation of your capability to realize your goals.  I am enough. I have all of the tools and resources I need to X. I can do this.  You can even incorporate speaking into your meditation if it works well for you.

You aren't "speaking your goals into existence" so much as reinforcing positive self-talk in your mind . Achieving your dreams is hard enough without a runaway train of negative self-talk to contend with .

One of the best ways to make your vision board work is to make sure you don’t just visualize. You also have to take action.

If you want to get your dream job, start developing the skills you need to succeed in this position. If you want to travel more, open a new savings account and set up automatic transfers every month. If you want to spend more time outdoors, add some dedicated time to your calendar for outdoor activities.

Finally, refresh your board when you feel the need to do so. You’ll know it’s time to refresh the board when looking at it no longer inspires you the way it used to. Maybe your passion and true north have changed over time.

Now that you know how to create a vision board, hopefully you can see that it’s a fun and creative way to visualize and make your goals a reality. This tool is especially effective if you find it helpful to have a daily reminder of where you’re headed. Whenever you have to make a difficult decision , you’ll have your vision board to help guide you in the right direction.

Another powerful way to manifest your vision is to work with a coach to get clear on what you want and create a plan of action. Achieving your goals and growing into your best self isn’t always easy, but it’s much easier when you have the right support.

Whether you want to accomplish personal goals, professional aspirations, or both, BetterUp  can help you on your journey.

How to Create a Vision Board That Works

Do vision boards work, how to make a vision board , tips for a successful vision board, overcoming common vision board challenges.

Making a vision board and refining it every year has had a profound impact on my life. It’s affected my personal life, my business life, my spiritual life, and many more areas. Because it’s something that’s so critical to success, I want to share with you exactly how to create a vision board that works.

Often, when we hear of vision boards, we think of them as an arts and crafts project involving glue sticks, scissors, magazine cut-outs, and printed pictures. But, a vision board is so much more than this: It’s a visual manifestation of the life you want to have. It displays what you want out of your time on this earth and what your inner-most desires are calling you to accomplish. There is possibly no other tool that can get you closer to fulfilling your idea of a perfect life than this tangible guide to the future.

What does it require? Time, serious contemplation, and regular check-ins.

But I promise you, the more you put into this project, the bigger results you’ll see in your life. In fact, studies show  that you are  43% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down.  This is one of the top reasons vision boards can have an enormous impact on the life goals you achieve.

Today, I’m going to explain why vision boards are incredibly important to goal-setting and goal accomplishment. I’ll also go over how to create a vision board that not only works but creates massive positive transformation in your life. We’ll cover:

  • How vision boards work
  • How to make a vision board
  • Getting the most from your vision board
  • Common vision board challenges and how to overcome them
What we focus on expands and becomes our reality. Where intention goes, energy flows. dacey paul

A vision board is a roadmap for the ideal vision you have for your life. From where you want to live, to your dream job, to the traits you want in a life partner, vision boards provide the vital clarity and perspective needed for turning dreams into reality.

Studies show that simply writing a goal down increases the ability to recall it later on, which also increases the likelihood of it coming to fruition or being accomplished. Further, information absorbed visually is retained   better and for longer  than information received simply audibly or through plain text. This is because 65% of the  population  are visual learners, according to the National Library of Medicine.

If you can write your goals down in a way that allows you to see   them, such as with a vision board, you’ll remember them, and they’ll stick in your memory. When you think of your goals each day, you begin to align your actions and decisions in a way that supports them. And when your daily actions and decisions align with your stated goals, your chances of achieving them increase tremendously.

Setting goals is the first step from turning the invisible to visible. tony robbins

Creating a vision board is a personal journey. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Still, if you’ve never done it, it can seem intimidating. Thinking about the different areas of your life and the goals and dreams you have in each category can be overwhelming. This is why many of us don’t spend time focusing on the vision we have for our lives.

As easy as it is to let life happen to us, it isn’t a healthy approach. When you let others take the driver’s seat, you’re no longer in control of the destination—and more often than not, you won’t like where they take you. That’s because we all have a purpose and calling we’re meant to fulfill. When you avoid directing yourself toward it, it results in pain, misery, and unfulfillment.

To avoid massive corrections in the future, start creating a vision board that sets you on the right path. Follow the three simple steps below to get started.

1. Visualization

The process begins with  visualization . Start by sitting or lying down where you can disconnect from external stimuli. Relax into the space, close your eyes, and begin imagining what you want for your life. Do you want to buy a house? What does the house look like? Where is it? Or do you want to become a better team leader? What  leadership behaviors  do you need to adopt? What kind of leader do you want to be? Sitting in a peaceful place, even in prayer or meditation, and thinking of these details will help you conjure  specific visuals   that guide your actions.  Repeat this as often as possible so that the images of what you want becomes clearer and clearer.

2. Writing Down Goals

Once you have clearly visualized the areas of your life that you want to focus on, write down the  specific goals you need to have to achieve them . What are the daily, weekly, and monthly steps and actions needed to get the house of your dreams? Or to become a leader in your field?

Writing goals down doesn’t have to mean onto a plain piece of paper with a pen. The same benefits of recall and memorization occur if you print or cut out pictures representing your visual goals and attach them to a poster board or a corkboard. You can also arrange them in a collage or a digital vision board.

If you’re artistically inclined, you can use paintings and drawings to represent your visions and goals. Just be sure to include both the overarching visions and the associated goals   to achieve them with images that are specific and relevant to what you want. If it’s just a collage of pretty pictures that don’t represent your desires and values, it won’t have any impact on your life.

3. Strategizing

Once your vision and the specific goals associated with them are clear, it’s time to strategize. What are some new habits you’ll need to integrate into your life to begin working towards them? What will the schedule of these new habits look like? For example, to buy a house, maybe you need to start cooking at home more to save money for a down payment. This habit could look like meal-prepping on Sundays for the week ahead. Or, to learn  how to become a CEO , start studying your company’s  leadership team . How do they work together? What professional traits and habits do they share?

Strategizing is the process of taking your goals and vision out of the abstract dream space and taking actionable steps to make them a reality.  It’s also the first step of the law of attraction—or when you have positive thoughts and actions that attract positive experiences.

Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe. oprah winfrey

A vision board doesn’t have much impact if it’s hidden, outdated, or doesn’t represent your truest personal desires. With the right approach and intentions, however, vision boards can be truly empowering tools for guiding you to the life of your dreams. Use the tips below to ensure your vision board is effective at doing this.

  • Make it personal: Our friends, family members, and colleagues may all have ideas and opinions on what they think we should pursue. Be sure to not let these influences distract you from what  you  want. Get personal with yourself. Meditate on it. Pray on it. Dig deep. Make sure your vision board is an accurate representation of you and no one else.
  • Make it visible: Place your vision board somewhere you’ll see it every day. You want to be reminded of your vision daily so that your actions and habits always support it. If you don’t see your vision board, you’re apt to forget your goals, and your daily choices may come out of alignment. This misalignment is what holds back many from achieving their objectives.
  • Update it: What you want out of life can change, and that’s okay. Maybe you’ve discovered a new passion or interest you’d like to explore. Or your life has taken an unexpected turn in some way. It happens. The key to having a successful vision board is making sure it is always up-to-date with where you are. If you need to change out pictures, set new specific goals, or update your strategy, be sure to do so.
  • Embrace change: If things in your life are too different, it’s okay to create a new vision board. Embrace the changes in your life and acknowledge that some things are not meant to be. Sometimes, discovering who we are and what we want requires trial and error. Therefore, if you’re encountering resistance, try another direction. It’s possible that change is actually what’s needed.
You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. james clear

If you make a vision board for a New Years’ resolution without giving it the thought and attention it needs, you can’t expect success. Vision boards require visualization, goal-setting, and strategy. They also require scheduled time, daily and weekly, for reflection and habit alignment.

Sometimes, people follow a spark of inspiration to make a vision board once. They gather all of the materials and set aside the time to start building it out. But unfortunately, without the right habits to support it, the poster board or corkboard ends up in the trash. Achieving success with anything, even vision boards, requires having  atomic habits . When you establish strong daily habits, your goals will be positively reinforced, thus transforming your life in positive ways.

Visualizing Success: How to Create a Vision Board for Business

As an entrepreneur, you likely have many goals and aspirations for your business. But with so many moving parts, it can be challenging to keep your eyes on the prize and stay motivated to reach your objectives. That’s where a vision board can help. A vision board is a visual representation of your goals and aspirations, typically created by collaging images, words, and phrases onto a board. When you look at your vision board, it serves as a daily reminder of what you’re working towards and helps you stay focused on your business goals.

Visualizing success is an essential part of achieving it. When you can see your goals, you’re more likely to take the necessary steps to make them a reality. In this article, we’ll explore the role of vision boards in achieving business success and walk you through the steps of creating your own board. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Define Your Business Goals

The first step in creating a vision board for your business is to define your goals. This involves setting clear, specific, and measurable objectives that will help guide your business towards success.

It’s essential to set clear and specific goals so that you can measure your progress and know when you’ve achieved them. Vague goals like “increase sales” or “grow my business” don’t provide a clear direction or measure of success. Instead, try to set specific targets, such as “increase sales by 20% within the next six months” or “expand my business to three new locations by the end of the year.”

In addition to being specific, your goals should also be measurable. This means that you should be able to track your progress towards achieving them. For example, if your goal is to increase website traffic, you should be able to measure your success by tracking your website analytics.

To help ensure that your goals are specific and measurable, consider using the SMART framework. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. By setting SMART goals , you can create a roadmap for achieving success in your business.

Here are some examples of different types of business goals that you might want to include on your vision board:

  • Financial goals : such as increasing revenue or profitability.
  • Growth goals : such as expanding your customer base or product offerings.
  • Marketing goals : such as increasing website traffic or social media engagement.
  • Operational goals : such as improving efficiency or reducing costs.

By setting clear and specific business goals and using the SMART framework, you can create a roadmap for achieving success in your business. In the next step, we’ll look at how to gather inspiration and materials for your vision board.

Step 2: Gather Inspiration And Materials

Once you’ve defined your business goals, it’s time to gather inspiration and materials for your vision board. The right materials and inspiration can help bring your goals to life and make your vision board more meaningful.

There are many sources of inspiration that you can use for your vision board. Magazines are an excellent place to start, as they offer a wide variety of images and words that you can use to represent your goals. You might also consider using quotes or affirmations that resonate with you and your business objectives. Images and graphics from the internet or social media can also provide inspiration for your vision board.

When selecting materials for your vision board, consider using materials that will be easy to work with and that will last. Some popular materials include foam board, cork board, or poster board. You’ll also need scissors, glue or tape, markers, and other decorative elements such as stickers, washi tape, or glitter to make your vision board more visually appealing.

As you gather your materials and inspiration, keep your goals in mind. Try to select images and words that resonate with your objectives and will help you stay motivated to achieve them. Your vision board should be a representation of your business aspirations and should inspire you to take action towards making them a reality.

In the next step, we’ll explore how to design your vision board and bring your goals to life.

Step 3: Design Your Vision Board

Now that you’ve gathered your materials and inspiration, it’s time to start designing your vision board. The key to creating a visually appealing and motivating vision board is to organize your materials and approach the design process with a clear plan.

Begin by organizing your materials by goal. For example, group images and words related to financial goals in one pile, and those related to growth goals in another. This will make it easier to visualize how you want to structure your board and ensure that your design is aligned with your business objectives.

Next, start designing your board. Consider using a central image or phrase to represent your main business goal and build around it. You might use different colours, fonts, or images to create visual interest and make your board stand out. Remember to keep your goals in mind and choose materials and design elements that align with them.

When designing your board, it’s important to strike a balance between creativity and practicality. Your board should be visually appealing and inspiring, but also easy to read and understand. Use clear, bold lettering and ensure that your images are large enough to be seen from a distance.

Finally, make sure that your vision board is in a place where you’ll see it often. This could be in your office or workspace, or in a common area where you spend time. The more you see your vision board, the more motivated you’ll be to work towards achieving your business goals .

In conclusion, designing a vision board for your business is a powerful tool that can help you stay focused and motivated towards your objectives. By defining your business goals, gathering inspiration and materials, and designing a visually appealing and motivating board, you’ll be well on your way to achieving the success you desire.

Step 4: Use Your Vision Board As A Tool For Success

Congratulations! You’ve created a beautiful and inspiring vision board for your business. But your work doesn’t end here. To make the most of your vision board, it’s important to use it as a tool for success.

One of the keys to using your vision board effectively is to review and update it regularly. Set aside time every month to review your goals and update your board with new images and words that inspire you. This will help you stay focused on your objectives and ensure that your vision board remains a relevant and motivating tool.

Another way to use your vision board as a source of inspiration and motivation is to visualize your success. Spend time each day looking at your board and imagining what it will feel like to achieve your business goals. Use your board as a reminder of why you started your business and the potential success that lies ahead.

a small bottle with writing on it: Stop Wishing, Start Doing.

You can also use your vision board to set smaller, more manageable goals that will help you achieve your larger objectives. Break down your goals into smaller milestones and use your vision board to track your progress. As you achieve each milestone, update your board with new images and words that reflect your success.

Finally, don’t be afraid to share your vision board with others. Let your employees or business partners know what you’re working towards and how they can help support you. Use your board as a tool for collaboration and brainstorming, and encourage others to create their own vision boards as well.

In conclusion, your vision board is a powerful tool that can help you achieve your business goals. By regularly reviewing and updating your board, visualizing your success, and using it as a source of inspiration and motivation, you’ll be well on your way to creating the success you desire.

Creating a vision board for your business goals is a powerful tool that can help you achieve the success you desire. By defining your goals, gathering inspiration, designing your board, and using it as a tool for success, you’ll be well on your way to creating the business of your dreams.

The benefits of creating a vision board are many. It can help you stay focused on your goals, inspire you to take action, and provide a visual reminder of why you started your business in the first place. It can also help you track your progress and celebrate your successes along the way.

So, if you haven’t already, take action today and start designing your own vision board. Gather your materials, define your goals, and let your creativity flow. Use your vision board as a source of inspiration and motivation, and watch as your business begins to thrive. Remember, with a clear vision and a little hard work, anything is possible.

Make an Inspiring Vision Board in Minutes with Milanote

Follow this step-by-step guide to learn the modern process of creating a vision board in Milanote.

How to make a vision board in 5 easy steps

A vision board (or dream board) is a collection of images and words that inspire and motivate you to reach your goals. They represent the changes you'd like to see in your life. Maybe you want to eat healthier meals, get back to the gym or just spend more quality time with family and friends. A vision board is an easy (and fun) way to visualize your goals and keep them top of mind.

Vision boards have come a long way since the days of cutting images out of magazines and pinning them to a corkboard. Digital vision boards give you instant access to millions of images, allow you to save videos and links, and are easily edited to allow for big changes in your life.

In this guide, you'll learn the modern way to create a vision board in Milanote. Remember, the creative process is non-linear, so you may find yourself moving back and forth between the steps as you go.

1. Set your goals

Start with a brain dump of everything you want to achieve. Vision boards can include your aspirations for the year ahead and any thoughts or feelings you want to bring into your life. Whichever you choose, it's important to include goals you can actually achieve.

Describe your goals in vivid detail. For example, if you're savings goal is a new car, don't just write 'new car'. Describe the make, model and even the colour you'd like.

If you get stuck, try answering the following questions...

  • How can I be happier at work? Do I have new career goals? What's my dream job?
  • How can I create a healthier body and mind?
  • What are my financial goals? What major purchases should I save for?
  • How can I improve relationships with my partner, friends or family?
  • Are there any activities I'd like to try? What have I always wanted to learn?
  • What's a destination I've always wanted to travel to?
  • How do I want to feel every day?

logo visionboard guide step 1

Drag out a new board for your vision board.

Drag a note card onto your board

Start typing then use the formatting tools in the left hand toolbar.

Add a note for each goal.

If you're not sure what goals to set for yourself and you're feeling frustrated, step away and think about it a bit more. Creating a vision board should be an enjoyable process and doesn't have to happen in one afternoon.

2. Add inspiring imagery & links

Now that you've set out your goals, start looking for images that represent them. These will serve as your daily visual reminder, so pick images you love to look at. Is there something about a particular image that captures your dreams and goals perfectly? Save it to your board.

Oprah Winfrey said, “It's important to create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life because you become what you believe.” So find inspiring images and links that help manifest these big changes.

It's best to choose images that include people doing the activities you'd like to try, images of the items you're saving for, and even links to books you'd like to buy. And don't worry too much about organizing your board just yet—that bit comes next.

logo visionboard guide step 2

Drag files from your computer.

Upload a file or document

Click the "Upload" button or just drag a file onto your board. You can add images, logos, documents, videos, audio and much more.

Use the built-in image library.

Save links from the web.

Save content from the web

With the Web Clipper installed, roll over an image (or highlight text), click Save, then choose the destination in Milanote. Return to your board and find the content in the "Unsorted" column on the right.

3. Transform your board from messy to organized

Once you've collected the links and imagery, the next step is to arrange your vision board into a composition you find visually appealing. You'll be staring at this daily, so take your time arranging it until you're happy.

Start by exploring composition and introducing scale. Is there one goal in your board that's most important to you? Try increasing its size. Are there themes you can see? Try grouping those elements together to signify their relationship.

There is no right or wrong to laying out your board. Just have fun and be creative.

logo visionboard guide step 3

Resize images.

Resize images

Drag the corner of an image to resize it. Double-click the corner to return it to its original size.

Crop images to focus on the part that matters.

Crop images

Double-click an image and press edit to crop or rotate it.

4. Add some words of encouragement

Now that your board is taking shape, include some words to get your mind thinking positively. Adding captions under your images is a great way to remind yourself why you chose those photos.

You can also fill your vision board with words that reaffirm how you'd like to feel when you start each day. They can be singular words or inspiring quotes. Read them back to yourself to see how they make you feel. The human brain can change even into adulthood, so the more we read and memorize positive statements, the easier it is to recall and act on them later.

Be sure to phrase your affirmations in a positive way. Instead of saying 'I won't neglect my friends.' try saying 'I'll reach out to friends every day.' You can find plenty of inspiring quotes online if you get stuck.

If there are particular words you want to draw attention to in your board, increase the size of them or try adding some colour.

logo visionboard guide step 4

Add a caption to an image.

Add a caption to an image

Select an image and just start typing.

Write on the board.

Sketch ideas on the board

Click Draw in the lefthand toolbar to sketch anywhere on a board. Press Save to commit a sketch.

5. Export or share your vision

Now that your board is complete and looking amazing, it's time to manifest your dreams. Vision boards will never come true if you forget about them, so save and export your board. Print it out and hang it beside your bathroom mirror or set it as your computer or phone wallpaper. It's important that you see it every day.

Always remember to take a few minutes to stand there and look over it. Study each image and remember why it's there. Doing so gives you time to focus and allows you to think of new ways to achieve your goals.

Re-read your affirmations to help calm your mind if you're feeling overwhelmed and reinforce positive thoughts. The goal is to walk away from your vision board feeling joy and motivation.

Share a read-only link to your board.

Share a read-only link with others.

Click Share in the top right of your board. You can add a Welcome message for viewers, allow comments, set a password or embed the board in another app or website.

Export your board.

Export board as PNG

And you're done!

Now you have a beautiful vision board filled with inspiring words and achievable goals to work towards every day. Study it closely and do what you can to bring those dreams to life.

Remember, life can change direction at any moment, so think of your vision board as a living thing and make changes to it when you need to. If you've been successful at manifesting a goal, consider removing it from your board. Or treat your vision board like a checklist and add a tick beside each item as you complete it. No matter how you mark off your achievements, don't forget to celebrate them!

A vision board is a collage of images and motivation, as you work towards achieving your dreams. [1] X Research source

Getting Started

Step 1 Reflect upon your goals.

  • What, in your view, is a good life?
  • What makes a life valuable or worth living?
  • When you are on your deathbed, what will you have hoped to have accomplished?

Step 3 Break down the big questions.

  • What activities do you want to learn how to do?
  • What hobbies and activities do you already do, but want to continue doing or get better at?
  • What are your career goals? What steps will you have to accomplish along the way to be able to eventually land your dream job? (For example, do you need a particular degree, or will you need to secure an internship?)
  • What are your relationship goals? Don't think just in terms of whether or not you want to be married, be in a long-term relationship or have children: think more specifically about what kind of person you want to be with, how you'd like to spend time with your partner, etc.
  • How do you want to be remembered by others? For example, do you want to write the next great American novel? Do you want to head a charitable organization that positively impacts the lives of others?

Step 4 Choose your theme.

  • You can decide to make a vision board which focuses on a very specific goal that you have. For example, if want to be able to afford your dream vacation within the next year, you can design a Jamaica-themed dream board.
  • You can also make dream boards which have a more general theme. Perhaps after reflecting about the type of person you want to be remembered as you determined that you want to work on becoming a kinder, more generous person. Your dream board can be devoted to this theme. Among the things you include can be pictures of inspiring role models.

Creating your Vision Board

Step 1 Decide upon the format of your vision board.

  • However, there's no reason to limit yourself to just this style of vision board. You can also make an electronic version of a vision board. You can design your own webpage or blog, use sites like Pinterest, or even just create a private document on your computer where you'll collect your inspirational images and affirmations.
  • Choose the format that you're most comfortable with, and which you'll be the most likely to actually look at and update regularly.

Step 2 Collect inspirational images for your vision board.

  • When choosing your images, select them with a careful eye, making sure to closely examine the entire image.
  • For example, if your goal is to get into your dream college, be sure to include an image of the campus, but select shots that are taken during your favorite season, or which show students engaged in activities you hope to enjoy while enrolled as a student.

Step 3 Collect inspirational words for your vision board.

  • An affirmation is a positive saying or script which you can repeat to yourself as a mantra. You can of course write your own affirmations , or you can search online for examples or visit your local bookstore or library for inspiration.
  • Your aspirations should be positively focused. For example, perhaps your goal is to be selected as first violin in your orchestra, but in the past you've struggled to practice every day, in spite of making resolutions every New Year's Eve. Don't include the following: “I won't quit practicing daily after just one month, like I always do”. This just highlights your previous shortcomings, and has an overall negative tone.
  • Instead, consider something like “I'll fill my home with joyful music daily”. This is so much more positive, and makes practicing an activity to look forward to, as opposed to describing it as something to be endured.

Step 4 Put your vision board together.

  • Consider choosing a colored background for your vision-board. Select this color carefully depending upon the nature and content of your theme. For example, if you want to stay pumped-up about being able to accomplish a difficult physical goal (like being able to bench press your own weight), choose a strong color, like red.
  • If, on the other hand, you are working on achieving peace and calm in your life, choose colors that are likewise soothing, like a soft blue.
  • Think about including a photo of you in the center of your vision board and surrounding yourself (literally!) with your inspiring images and words.
  • If you are making a physical vision board, you don't have to glue anything down immediately. Instead, you can play around with the layout. You can even take pictures of different layouts and compare them.
  • Once you've settled upon a design and arrangement that appeals to you, secure the components with glue or staples (if you are making a physical vision board; if you're making an electronic version, be sure to save your file!).

Using Your Vision Board

Step 1 Place your vision board where you will see it every day.

  • You may prefer that your vision board be a private source of inspiration, which is fine. If this is the case, don't feel as though you must hang your vision board in your living room. Similarly, if you are using an electronic vision board, you don't need to make it public. Most webpages and/or blogs can be set to private, or you can limit the people who can view your work.
  • The point is that your vision board should be accessible to you, and shouldn't be placed where you'll fall out of the habit of looking at it. [4] X Research source

Step 2 View your board regularly.

  • Don't just read the inspirational sayings and affirmations silently to yourself: repeat them out-loud and with conviction. It's one thing to silently say to yourself “I will become a successful designer,” but it's yet another thing to hear yourself say that with confidence. If you don't believe in yourself, who will?

Step 3 Don't be taken in by false promises of what a vision board can guarantee.

  • There's absolutely no scientific evidence that creating a vision board and visualizing your success at achieving your goals will cause the universe to deliver. [5] X Research source
  • While you shouldn't give up your dreams before you start, understand that life throws roadblocks at us, and that sometimes, try as we might, we simply won't be able to achieve everything that we desire. If you go into this project thinking that you'll get results if you do it correctly, and if you then aren't able to get everything you want, you're only setting yourself up for self-blame and disappointment, which can lead to depression or lowered self-worth. [6] X Research source

Step 4 Use your dream board to visualize the process, not just the result.

  • For example, students who were asked to spend time imagining how great it would feel to perform well on an exam did worse than those students who instead visualized their study process and those who did not visualize at all. [7] X Research source
  • The lesson to be learned from this and other similar studies seems to be that, while it's good to specify your goals and spend some time envisioning what your life will be like if and when you reach them, it's both more effective and better for your mental health to focus on the specific steps you'll need to take along the way.
  • For example, there's probably nothing wrong with day-dreaming about how awesome you'll feel once you cross the finish line of your first marathon. However, you may actually be less likely to ever actually complete the grueling run if all you ever do is visualize this moment of success.
  • What time you do spend visualizing would be better spent focused upon your training process. Make sure that your vision board has plenty of images and inspirational sayings related to the minutia of training and not just the moment of success. And of course, don't forget to actually strap on the running shoes and get out there!

  • Some studies suggest that vision boards can be detrimental to achieving your goals if you stop at dreaming about them. The key to success is to make sure you turn your visions into actions. [8] X Research source Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

What Does a Vision Board Do?

  • What to Include
  • Next in The End of the Resolution Guide The End of the Resolution

A vision board is a collection of images that represent a person's goals, dreams, and aspirations . It serves as a visual reminder of a person's intentions and a source of inspiration and motivation.

Vision boards are often collages that can include photographs, quotations, pictures from magazines, or other visuals that help convey your dreams and goals. They are also sometimes referred to as mood boards or action boards.

They are highly personalized and often focused on a specific theme or period of time. For example, you might create a vision board for your career goals. Or you might make one that centers on what you hope to accomplish over the next year.

You can use a vision board to help keep you focused on your goals. By creating a visual representation of what you hope to achieve, you may feel more motivated to take the steps you need to follow to make that vision a reality.

Vision boards can help accomplish a number of different things:

Boost Self-Reflection

Vision boards encourage you to think about the things that you really want to achieve in the future. This can not only clarify your goals but help you envision yourself achieving them. These visual reminders also encourage you to self-reflect by asking questions such as, "How much progress am I making toward my goals?" and "Do I still want the things that I've included in my vision board?"

Regularly asking yourself such questions can help you reflect on both your needs and your progress.

Increase Self-Awareness

A vision board can also be a powerful tool for increasing self-awareness . Because of the visual nature of this tool, it can help you think about your life, goals, and values in new ways.

As you create your vision board, you'll select imagery and words that speak to your aspirations. As you reflect on your choices, you may find it easier to identify the values that are important to who you are.

A vision board can also help you see areas where you might struggle with self-limiting beliefs about yourself and about future success. As you become more aware of negative thoughts or destructive self-talk, you can look for ways to cultivate a more positive mindset .

Clarify Your Goals

Your vision board puts your hopes and dreams in a prominent, visible place so you are regularly reminded of what you are focused on achieving. This can help clarify your biggest goals in life and prioritize the things that are most important.

Motivate and Inspire

One reason why vision boards can be such a powerful tool is because of the constant motivation and inspiration they provide. In addition to offering positive reinforcement in the form of appealing imagery and affirming words, they can also help you to feel a greater sense of purpose .

When you look at your board, the curated selection of imagery and text that is meaningful to you specifically can help you to feel like you have a worthwhile goal to keep striving toward.

Reduce Stress

Working toward goals often requires learning new things, having new experiences, and stepping out of your comfort zone. It can be stressful and anxiety-provoking at times, which is why some people might never take the necessary steps to attain their dreams.

A vision board can help relieve some of the stress from this experience by familiarizing you with aspects of the process, helping you to feel more comfortable when you need to do things that are outside of your normal routine.

Gain Greater Perspective

Because a vision board distills what's important to you and what you hope to achieve into a selection of meaningful imagery, you may find it easier to gain some perspective on your life and goals. Sometimes seeing these things in a visual format allows you to step back and view your efforts and plans with greater clarity.

Research suggests that the brain tends to assign a higher value to visual imagery than to other types of stimuli. Visual representations tend to be more memorable than words, a phenomenon known as the picture superiority effect. Because of this, the information on your vision board may stick out in your mind more than a collection of goals written on a to-do list.

Not everyone believes in the value of vision boards, however. For example, some research has found that only visualizing positive outcomes (without also visualizing the hard work and effort that it takes to succeed) can actually hinder performance and achievement.

The problem with vision boards, critics suggest, is that they may stifle growth rather than fuel it. By envisioning your dream future, you might stop working toward it and instead wait for the universe to manifest it into existence.

There are many different types of theme boards that you can create, but they often fall into one of three main themes.

Goal Boards

This type of vision board is designed to focus on a clear, specific goal. For example, if your goal is to achieve a specific financial goal, such as paying off debt or saving money, your board would focus on this goal.

It might include pictures that offer inspiration, infographics that provide valuable information, quotes to keep you motivated, and even worksheets where you can keep track of your progress visually.

Theme Boards

Theme boards are less specific than goal boards, but they tend to focus on a specific theme in your life that you hope to bring to fruition. For example, your vision board might focus on your New Year's resolutions , your relationship goals, or your academic or professional aspirations. They tend to focus on goals that may be more long-term or on special interests that you want to focus on more in your life.

Reflection Boards

This type of vision board is centered around achieving goals related to inner growth and personal development. They can be a way to learn more about yourself, your goals, and what makes you happy. They can serve to lift your mood or help you to feel more inspired.

For example, if you've been struggling with feeling the Winter blues , you might create a reflection board full of uplifting imagery that helps you feel more joyful and hopeful about the future.

Your vision board will be highly individual, but some general themes or goals you might choose to focus on include:

  • Professional/career goals
  • School plans
  • Learning goals
  • Social activism goals
  • Health/fitness
  • Travel inspiration or vacations you want to take
  • Friends/family/social goals
  • Romance/love goals
  • Money goals
  • Happiness/contentment goals
  • Hobby-related goals
  • Reading goals or books you want to read
  • Meditation/mindfulness goals
  • Priorities you want to focus on
  • Big life dreams (Write a book! Move to France! Start a business!)

Benefits of Using a Vision Board for Mental Health

Vision boards may also provide a number of mental health benefits that can potentially boost mood and well-being. There is not a great deal of research specifically on the potential value of vision boards in terms of their efficacy or impact on mental health. However, some evidence suggests that the goal-setting associated with vision boards can have a variety of positive effects.

  • Goal-setting can improve well-being : Research has shown that engaging in goal-setting actions can play a role in improving wellness. In one study, participants who participated in a goal-setting activity reported higher levels of subjective well-being than participants who had not engaged in the intervention.
  • Visualizing can increase success : Studies have also found that visualization can be a powerful tool for achievement and performance. For example, research has shown that athletes who visualize themselves performing a task experience real-world improvements in their athletic performance. Repeating the visualization can also improve both physical and psychological reactions in those specific situations.
  • Foster greater mindfulness : Mindfulness is all about focusing on the present moment and paying attention to how you feel. Creating your vision board can help you become more mindful of the things that are important to you, both in the here and now and in the future. This can be a useful tool for helping you feel more focused and to combat feelings of stress and anxiety.
  • Greater self-efficacy : Because a vision board is all about what matters to you, you may find that it helps you feel better about yourself and your vision for the future. It can be a useful resource for boosting your faith in your own abilities. Known as self-efficacy , this belief in your capabilities can play an important role in how motivated you are and how hard your work toward achieving your goals.

How to Make Your Own Vision Board

In order to make your own vision board, start by deciding the type of board you want to create and how you want to present it. Some examples of different formats you might utilize for a vision board include:

  • A cork pinboard
  • A whiteboard
  • A wire board
  • A magnetic board

You might opt to purchase items to create your pinboard, but you can also just use things that you already have. An empty picture frame, a clipboard, posterboard, a large piece of cardboard, or even just a blank section of wall where you can hang visual items can serve as a vision board.

What to Include in a Vision Board

Next, gather materials that you want to include in your vision board. Some sources of imagery might include:

  • Clippings from magazines, books, or catalogs
  • Online images printed at home
  • Old postcards
  • Photographs
  • Printed or handwritten quotes and affirmations
  • Scrapbook paper, colorful construction paper, cardstock, fabric
  • Doodles or original artwork
  • Handwritten words or affirmations
  • Printed words, sayings, or quotes
  • Newspaper clippings

The goal is to select images and words that speak to you, offer inspiration, and help you envision the future you hope to have.

As you put together your vision board, you might find it helpful to create a relaxing, inspiring environment that allows you to focus on your mood and vision. Light some scented candles and play some inspirational music as you spend time creating.

Questions to Ask Yourself

As you work on creating your board, ask yourself some of the following questions:

  • What are my values?
  • What gives my life meaning?
  • How do I envision my future?
  • How do I want to spend my time?
  • What motivates me?
  • What are my priorities?
  • What do I hope to accomplish in the next year? In five years? In ten years?
  • How do I plan to achieve my goals?
  • What tools and resources do I need to achieve my goals?

Keeping these things in mind can help you select the visuals, graphics, photos, words, and other elements that are aligned with your hopes and dreams.

It’s important to remember that your vision board is just that—a vision of a future that hasn’t happened yet. In order to make that dream a reality, you need to commit to taking the steps and doing the work that it will take to make that vision a reality.

Instead of thinking of these boards as mere “visions,” it might be more useful to view them as action boards that detail not only what you want, but how you plan to go about achieving it.

What Is a Vision Board?

A vision board is usually a collage of images that represent goals and dreams . It can include cut-out pictures from magazines and words that help inspire you to manifest your dreams and get where you want to go (here is a complete guide on how to manifest something).

Although vision boarding is a commonly used tool, there is not a lot of research on its effectiveness. Initial research suggests it can help us more easily reach our goals. This may be due to how vision boards help us gain self-awareness and self-reflect on what is important to us.

Vision boards may also help us imagine what a positive future could look like for us. Imagining a positive future is a helpful way to increase positive emotions and optimism . And positive emotions often create opportunities and increase the chances of success.

Even though this research doesn't directly assess the benefits of making a vision board, it suggests that many of the components of vision boarding have potential benefits for our well-being and success. It's just key to remember that vision boards are not magic. Rather, they can help you better understand what it is you'd like to manifest.

Here are some tips to help you make a vision board.

How to Make a Vision Board

Start by exploring your values. If your goals are not aligned with your personal values, achieving these goals won't provide the sense of satisfaction and well-being that you're seeking. Ask yourself, what really matters to you? What gives you meaning? Who do you want to be? Who do you want to help? And how do you want to spend your time? When making a vision board and thinking through your goals, keep these values-focused questions in mind.

Think about what motivates you. If you pursue goals that you find motivating, you'll have an easier time reaching them. So ask yourself, what do you want and why do you want it? Does it have anything to do with your childhood or past experiences? Does it have to do with your personality ?

Try to better understand why the goals you've set are so important to you. Or revise them if you discover they are not as important as you once thought.

Set priorities. Sometimes vision boards can end up being a collection of all the goals we aspire to—being rich, beautiful, and successful. If we really want to achieve these goals, we need to be more realistic with them. What can we reasonably accomplish in a year or five years? You can visualize your priorities by focusing a vision board on your most important life goals or by placing them above, in the center, or over a greater majority of the board.

Potential Problems With Vision Boards

Vision boarding is somewhat controversial in the scientific community. Because vision boards are often associated with the "law of attraction ," which doesn't have scientific support behind it, many assume vision boards are not a useful tool.

It's true that we don't fully understand the precise benefits of vision boards, but the truth is we don't understand the precise benefits of many tools that are used in coaching , counseling, and psychotherapy . That's because testing each one of these tools without the others is quite burdensome research. Anyway, given we know that the very act of setting goals is better than not setting goals, vision boards are indeed likely to be a useful tool, at least for some people.

Vision Board Ideas

Here are some types of goals that you may want to include in a vision board.

  • Social Goals

You can include all of these or make a vision board for each goal, focusing on the details of each. It's up to you. Now it's time to get creative.

Many of us are looking for that perfect tool that makes it easier to reach our goals.

Today, we’ll introduce you to the vision board.

A number of celebrities and influential people, including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Oprah Winfrey, have used vision boards to manifest what they want in life.

What exactly is a vision board?

Also known as a dream board or goal board, it is basically a collage of images and/or words used as a visualization tool. It is one of the most popular manifestation techniques today.

The images and words can be cut out from magazine pages, drawn, written, or printed out.

The collage represents your goals or dreams . By putting these all in one place, it becomes easier for you to visualize and manifest them your life.

In this post, we’re featuring a cool collection of vision board ideas that will inspire you to create your own. You can even share these ideas with your friends or if you host a vision board party .

But first, here are the basic steps for making your own vision board.

4 Steps to Create Your Own Vision Board

1. Reflect. Think about what you want in life. Is it a new house? To get a degree? To launch that startup? To be promoted? Write your thoughts down.

There are no limits to what your goals should be. When he was starting out as an actor, Jim Carrey wrote himself a check for $10,000,000 for “acting services rendered.” In 1994, he got that exact amount for his role in Dumb and Dumber .

2. Collect. Now that you’ve reflected on your vision, gather some magazines and cut out images, phrases, and vision board quotes that represent what you want, and that encourage you to work on getting what you want.

3. Assemble. Get a solid board (e.g., cardboard, cork, or wood). On the board, arrange and stick the cutouts in a way that’s meaningful for you. If you prefer, you can add some embellishments to your board to make it more personalized. Here's a simple check list of vision board supplies that you'll need. 4. Display. Place the finished vision board in a prominent spot, where you can view it even for just a few seconds every day. Spend a few moments reflecting on your goals each day.

Creating a couple’s vision board is an opportunity for you and your partner to discuss future plans. It will help clarify your  relationship goals .

It’s nice to plan a trip abroad with the person you love. However, there are bigger things that you need to discuss as a couple, such as whether you’re having a wedding or not, or if you are willing to become parents.

A vision board can open the way for better communication between you and your partner so you can discuss the important aspects of your relationship.

22. You Got This

If you want to make headway in your career, putting up a vision board may be the way to go in order to get what you want.

23. Vision Wall

The photo above features two kinds of vision boards: a wall-mounted one and a foldable, portable version.

A wall-mounted vision board is ideal for having a prominent display that you can use for visualizing your intentions throughout the day. This works well if your schedule permits you to be in one location for most of the day.

However, if you tend to travel a lot, you can’t view a wall-mounted vision board. You’ll miss out on this crucial step for manifesting your dreams. The only practical solution is a portable vision board.

24. Portable Vision Board

Here is another example of a portable vision board. Instead of preparing a stiff board to mount the images you’ve selected for your vision board, you’d need a journal notebook instead. Choose images that resonate with you and assemble just as you would for a regular-sized vision board. For increased portability, choose a pocket-sized notebook.

In this example, the creator made an accordion page in order to accommodate all the images and texts for her vision board.

25. Part of Something Larger Than Ourselves

This is an inspiring example of a vision board focused on self-improvement and self-discovery.

Its base is stiff black paper, embellished with magazine cutouts on the outer part (1 st picture) and charming illustrations for the inner part (2 nd picture). This vision board is small enough to fit within the pages of a journal, so you can take it wherever you go.

26. Clothesline Vision Board

Rather than the usual cutouts, glue, and cardboard this vision board uses some rope and clothespins to display photos and texts.

Making a vision board is an opportunity to unleash your creativity. Aside from embellishing it with magazine cutouts, you can use souvenirs gathered from trips, found objects, twigs, leaves, etc.

27. Personalized Wall

This happy wall does not rely on a board to contain the creator’s vision. Rather, the collection of photographs, quotes, and other items are placed directly on the wall with the help of tape and screws.

Vision boards like this example are perfect for manifesting friendship goals.

28. Level Up

Choosing a keyword for your vision board is a great way to stay motivated as you work toward your goals.

For this vision board, its creator chose the phrase “Level Up” to remind her that she’s moving forward towards her goals of writing a book, strengthening her faith, improving her health, etc.

If you’re making a vision board, you have the permission to dream big. As Norman Vincent Peale said, “ Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars. ”

29. Vision Board Your 2021

Focus words are the main feature of this vision board. These words help anchor you to your dreams and keep you motivated for the whole time you’re using the vision board.

How do you choose focus words?

The following is quick guide:

  • The words must resonate with you
  • These words must support your intentions
  • You must be able to connect with the words while going through your day-to-day

The above goal board is an example of how to assemble a vision board with focus words as the central theme.

If you're stuck on what words to use, then here are 365 positive words you can try .

30. Self Care Vision Board

We’ve mentioned earlier that making a vision board is a form of self-care.

Having a personal sacred space where you can see the things you want for your life allows you to do visualizations even when you’re not aware of it.

Furthermore, having a vision board can transform negative thoughts into positive ones. ( Check out some positive and happy thoughts in this post. )

The One-Year Plan: Create a Vision Board that Aligns with Your Business Plan

The One-Year Plan: Create a Vision Board that Aligns with Your Business Plan

This is part of a four-post series detailing how to create—and make the most of—your business plan. Read other posts in the series:

  • The One-Year Plan: Complete this Must-Haves Exercise
  • The One-Year Plan: Determine Your Why Behind Your Must-Haves
  • The One-Year Plan: Determine How Many Transactions You Need to Close

The first time I asked my wife to be a part of building our vision board, she thought it was corny. Most people do. But this stuff works.

When you take time every day (30 seconds or so) to look at it and internalize your commitments, you will be amazed at how many things you can check off in a twelve-month period.

My wife is now a believer because we’ve used it for multiple years and checked off multiple goals and accomplishments.

When your vision board aligns with your business plan and goals, you up your chances of checking off everything on the list. Here’s how to set it up.

Setting up the 3-section vision board

I mention the wife, spouse, or family member because when you build out this vision board, you want to have communication around what it is that you want. There’s a very specific reason you’re going to do that.

Before I give you that reason, go ahead and build the three-section vision board, as pictured below. Use a large piece of cardboard or large cardstock paper, and draw a large box with three sections like in the image below:

3-section-vision-board

The Top Section: Your Spouse/Partner/Family

In the top section of your vision board, write down everything your spouse wants and needs over the next 12 months—similar to your must-haves exercise . List everything your spouse wants that you’re willing to help make sure it happens.

This section can also include anything your family wants. If you have kids and want to do things with them or for them, those wants will go in this section—right at the top.

As much as possible, find images that go with the things in this section, like a picture of your favorite vacation spot, the car your spouse wants, or the kind of pet your family wants to adopt when you’re in a position to do so.

Google images for every item listed in this section, print them out and fill your board with those visuals.

The Middle Section: You

The middle section is for you and the personal things you want. Maybe it’s a car for yourself. Maybe it’s a commitment to improving your health. Whatever your personal commitments are, put them here in the middle.

Just as with the first section, Google and print out images that relate to the wants in this section. This makes your wants and needs more visual, makes them feel closer, more real, and more motivating than words alone.

The Bottom Section: The Foundation

This section is the foundation of everything else.

This section will contain all the numbers and money that needs to be generated to support everything you’ve listed in the top two sections.

The foundation piece is so important when you sit down with your spouse and family for your conversation. When you sit down and say, “Hey, what are all the things you want? What is going to change our life if we accomplish it here, and I stay committed in the next 12 months to making it happen?”

Maybe your spouse has a ceiling to their income. You, as a real estate professional, have no ceiling. So, you’re going to ask yourself, “If I stay committed and make all this money, and we get all these things, what’s it going to mean for our life?”

Then, figure out how much time, how much effort, and how much energy you’ve got to put in to make the money and execute on the things you want—and that’s a visual for everybody in the family to see—you can reference it if you run into conflicts along the way.

The vision board begins with communication

This is a changeable plan; it serves you and your family, not the other way around. So, if your spouse tells you they want you home and available more often, you can revisit the vision board to discuss whether it makes sense to remove some items in order to have more family time.

When the foundation is clear about what you’ve got to get done for work, you, your spouse, and your family will know why you’re working X number of hours weekly.

The vision board starts with real and respectful communication between you and the people closest to you. This isn’t just your life. For anything to work—any team, any marriage, any relationship—there’s got to be a fluid and high-level understanding of communication.

This is an opportunity to communicate with your family about what that foundational commitment should look like.

It should be reasonable, too. You can’t say, “I want to go out and make a million dollars this year, and I want to work the Tim Ferriss 4-hour work week.” It doesn’t work that way.

Your foundation—your level of commitment—has to equal the ambitions at the top of that vision board. And when they match up, you will find that you’ll be checking off the items in those first two sections.

How to Make a Business Vision Board in 5 Simple Steps

Does anyone else remember when Oprah got into the Law of Attraction? I have this memory of being a teenager and watching Oprah interview the women who wrote The Secret and having this totally skeptical reaction. Like “What the heck is she talking about???”

Fast forward a few years and I found myself creating a business vision board to help me reach my goals. I had to laugh at my earlier disbelief because even if you don’t believe in the Law of Attraction if you are a visual learner vision boards are awesome.

A business vision board is a great way to manifest and focus your goals, dreams, and aspirations. By carefully crafting what you want in life and in your business, these visualized goals become more tangible and achievable. But where do you start when it comes to making a business vision board? In this guide, we will provide step-by-step instructions for creating and making the most out of a vision board.

What is the Law of Attraction?

The Law of Attraction says that you will attract what you focus your attention on. When you focus on the negative things around you, that is the kind of energy you will have in your life. When you focus on positive things you will pull more positive energy into your life.

I don’t know how much of that I believe…but I do think that when you focus on negative or positive it affects how your brain sees your life. Kind of a glass-half-empty or half-full concept, life is what you expect to see.

Many Olympic athletes use visualization as part of their training, a form of the Law of Attraction. There is also scientific evidence that visualization can help patients heal from surgery faster and many doctors encourage their patients to meditate before undergoing procedures.

So if doctors and athletes are seeing results, imagine what using a vision board for your small businesses can help you achieve!

Why is Visualization So Powerful for Your Brain?

Visualizing your goals and desired outcomes is a powerful tool for your brain. By envisioning our desired outcomes, we are more likely to stay motivated and focused on our goals. This is because visualizing these goals stimulates the same parts of the brain as actually doing the task itself. In other words, when we visualize ourselves taking steps towards our goal, it can be just as powerful as actually working towards them.

The act of visualization has been shown to increase motivation, focus, and energy levels, and to help us stay organized and on track with our plans.

Visualization can also help us better understand complex concepts or tasks by giving us a mental picture of what we need to do. This can make it easier for us to break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable ones. Visualizing our goals also gives us a sense of ownership and control over them, which can make us more likely to achieve them.

Finally, visualization can also be used to help us work through difficult emotions or situations. By allowing us to see ourselves in a positive light, we can better cope with challenges and develop strategies to overcome them.

Understanding the Basics of a Business Vision Board

A business vision board is essentially a collection of images, words, and quotes that represent the goals and aspirations you have for your business. It is an effective way to stay organized and focused on what you want to achieve.

The Business Vision Board Process

1. Begin by writing down your business goals and aspirations.

If you haven’t taken the time to set out some long-term goals and then break them down into bite-size steps do it before you create your business vision board. Write your goals out by hand and then use that list as a guide when you start choosing pictures. You could even create a One Page Business Plan before you get started.

Think about the things that inspire you, the things you want in your life, and the things you’re passionate about. Ask yourself questions like:

  • What do I want to accomplish professionally?
  • What type of business owner do I want to be?
  • What experiences do I want to accomplish this year?

2. Think about what words or phrases evoke strong emotions in you.

These could be inspiring quotes, motivational mantras, or even just simple words that remind you of something important. You can find words online, or if you prefer, you can use magazines, newspapers, or other media sources that are readily available.

3. Include images that represent each of your goals.

For example, if one of your goals is to earn enough to travel more, you might include photos of different places around the world. You can use literal pictures of things, like a new car or a book published, or more ethereal goals such as helping other people get fit or learning a new crochet technique.

I also love to pull pictures that evoke a feeling. It can be hard to figure out how to represent finding a new relationship, but you can represent love with a simple heart.

Another idea is to make a collage with photos you took yourself.

4. Look for symbols that are meaningful to you.

This could be anything from a heart to a star to a butterfly. These symbols can be used to represent different aspects of your business goals.

5. Create a pleasing visual arrangement.

Once you have gathered the materials you want to use, it’s time to start arranging them on your board. Start by laying out the images, words, and quotes you have chosen in a visually appealing way. Consider how the colors and shapes of the elements interact with each other, and try to create a cohesive and balanced layout.

Place the images and quotes that are most meaningful to you in the center of the board, and then work your way outwards. I’ll also use stickers, washi tape, or doodles to add a personal touch. You can also add personal notes or reflections to help you remember and appreciate the messages in your vision board.

Should you include money amounts on your business vision board?

Honestly, this is a tough question to answer.

I am more of a visual person and don’t include specific numbers on my vision board business plan. But, if you are very analytical and it will help you to see the numbers every day, then feel free to include them.

A word of warning though… Numbers are only good to include if there is a plan behind them. Don’t just throw some random income goal on your board. Sit down and create a plan on HOW you will reach that goal by breaking it into quarterly, monthly, and weekly goals.

Business Vision Board Format Ideas

There are many different ways to format the vision boards that you can create. The materials you use to make them don’t need to be limited to just magazine cutouts, photos, and quotes either. Here are some different ideas and vision board formats that you can use when creating your own physical vision board:

  • Collage Boards: This type of vision board uses a variety of images, words, and quotes to create a visually appealing collage. These boards are perfect for those who want to express themselves in a creative way.
  • Goal Setting Boards: These boards focus on specific business goals or objectives that you want to achieve. You can include images, words, and quotes that will help to keep you motivated and on track as you work towards your goals.
  • Mind Map Boards: These boards use a visual representation of ideas and concepts to help you think through and plan out your goals. You can use mind maps to get an overview of the different aspects of a project or goal that you want to achieve.
  • Calendar Boards: A calendar board allows you to set deadlines for yourself and track your progress over time. This can help to keep you motivated and on track as you work towards your goals.
  • File Folder Boards: My own vision boards have usually been created on a piece of large cardboard, but it hit me recently that being a very tactile person I should create something I could hold. Luckily, The Artful Parent has directions for creating a portable one using file folders.
  • Digital Boards: This is a handy format if you want to be able to take your vision board wherever you go. I used Canva to create my 2023 vision board.

How to Make a Digital Business Vision Board

While traditional vision boards may take up physical space, digital vision boards can be stored on a device such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone. With this method, you can create a board that is just as effective as a physical one but with more flexibility. Here are some tips for creating a successful digital business vision board:

1. Start by picking a platform – You have a few options when it comes to creating your vision board. Popular platforms include websites like Pinterest or specific apps like Canva . Whichever platform you choose, make sure it is easy to use and has the features you need.

2. Gather inspiring images and words – Once you’ve chosen a platform, it’s time to start finding the images and words that will help you stay focused on your goals. Look for quotes, pictures, and other visuals that speak to you and inspire you.

3. Organize your business vision board – After you’ve collected your images and words, it’s important to organize them in a way that makes sense to you. Whether you prefer to keep things grouped by topics or arrange them in an aesthetically pleasing way, try to create a board that you can easily access and use.

4. Share your vision board – Once you’ve created your digital vision board, it’s time to share it with the world. This can be done through social media, email, or a personal blog. By sharing your vision board, you will have more motivation to achieve your goals.

Consider Multiple Vision Boards

Having different boards for different aspects of your life allows you to focus on specific goals and stay motivated to achieve them. When you have a single board, it can become cluttered with too many images and thoughts that can distract you from your main goal. By breaking up your vision boards into separate topics, you can more easily keep track of what you are trying to accomplish.

You can create boards for different aspects of your life such as:

Having multiple vision boards also provides an opportunity to be creative and express yourself in different ways. You can use different colors, textures, and images to express different emotions for each board. This way, you can make sure that each board reflects your individual goals for that topic. Additionally, having multiple vision boards can help you stay organized, focused, and motivated on your path toward success.

Each board can act as a reminder of the progress you have made and the goals you still need to achieve. This can be especially beneficial if you have a lot of goals that require a long-term commitment or sustained effort.

Overall, having multiple vision boards can be a great way to improve your productivity and achieve your goals.

How Often Should You Refresh Your Vision Board?

Refreshing your business vision board can be an important part of staying motivated and focused on your goals. Depending on your goals and how often they change, it is recommended to refresh your vision board at least once a year. This will ensure that your vision board remains relevant and inspiring.

When refreshing your vision board, take some time to reflect on the progress you have made toward your goals. Consider which goals you have achieved, which goals need more work, and which new goals you want to add. This will help you to stay focused on what matters most and ensure that your vision board is full of inspiring images and quotes that will keep you motivated.

You can also use this opportunity to switch up the layout of your vision board. Try different colors, font sizes, and shapes to create a visually appealing and cohesive design. You can also try new materials such as corkboard, poster board, and fabric to give your vision board an extra special touch.

I usually set aside time to create a new business vision board at the end of each year.

The Secret to Business Vision Board Success

Do you want to know the secret to really getting the most out of your business vision board?

Put it where you will see it every single day.

Don’t stick it in a closet or behind the couch. Find a prominent place to display it where you can really soak it in every day. Maybe it can be hung above your desk or put on your bedroom bureau, somewhere you can’t ignore it!

Looking at those pictures and words every day will really sear them into your brain. You want to find yourself thinking about those positive affirmations and long-term goals daily. That focus will help you to reach those goals!

A vision board can grow as you grow. Add more pictures or words as your year progresses or if you reach the goals you set for yourself, make a whole new board!
