This MOBI Business Plan Template consists of sections that relate to the content included in the MOBI Starting a Business course . You can also use this template as a guide independently. We have created this template with the input of key stakeholders such as economic development agencies, lenders, mentors and successful entrepreneurs. You can complete sections of the business plan as you go through the course, to apply what you are learning along the way, or you can wait until you have completed the course. This business plan template is a universal model suitable for most types of business, which you can customize to fit your circumstances. MOBI provides leading topics, questions, and suggestions in each section to guide you. Here are some instructions to help you get started:

  • On the cover page replace the MOBI spark with your own logo and provide your business name, personal name, contact information, and date.
  • Complete each section leaving the main title, such as “Executive Summary,” and using the subtitles and questions as a guideline. Replace those subtitles and questions with the needed and relevant information. Name and Description of Business State the name of your business and describe your product or service.

Targeted Market and Customers Describe your target markets and customers and why they want or need your product or service.    

Trends in this Industry What are the current trends in the industry that make this a good time for your product or service? For example, is the market for your product growing, and why? Have others failed to address a particular need that your product or service will address?  

Value Proposition Provide a brief statement of the unique benefits and value your business will deliver to your customers. Describe the unique qualities of your product or service that will enable you to be profitable.

The Vision  Describe the vision of your business and why you are committed to pursuing this vision and making it successful. 

Founder Background: Work/life experience related to the intended business Describe your work/life experience, educational credentials, and how they are related to the business you plan to start. Include a list of your skills and knowledge, which will be required in your business. 

Your Team If you plan to hire full- or part-time employees or seek business partners, describe your plan for engaging with these other members of your team. If you already have employees or partners, describe key personnel and their roles here. 

Goals for business: Outline your key goals for your business. (Explain your plans for growing the business and what you can realistically accomplish in a defined period of time.)

Financing and Financial Projections ( Many business owners require the assistance of a bookkeeper or accountant when completing this section.)

Startup Capital Provide a table or spreadsheet showing the sources of your startup capital including what you or other investors will contribute and what you intend to borrow.  Create a list of what the startup capital will be used for and how much will be left over for working capital ( SCORE Startup Expenses Template ).

Accounting Statements Prepare your starting balance sheet and projected profit and loss (income) statements for the first three years. (By month for the first year and then by year for years two and three.) Forecast your month-to-month cash flow requirements for the first year.  

Analysis of Costs List and explain the key costs and profit margins that are important for your business.  Classify your costs as fixed, variable, product, delivery, etc. 

Break-Even Analysis Based on your costs and pricing strategy, prepare a break-even analysis.

Internal Controls Explain your internal and cash controls. For instance, check signing policy, strategy for controlling shrinkage, and control of incoming merchandise or supplies.

Business Organization

Business Organization Explain the form of business organization you intend to use and why it is best for your business (sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, etc.).

Professional Consultants List the names of your key advisors: bookkeeper/accountant, consultants, lawyer, insurance agent, and any other professionals.   

Business Location

If you need a physical location other than your home to operate your business, identify your business space needs considering all phases of your workflow (production, storage, shipping, potential employees, customer meetings, and future requirements). Explain why the location you picked meets your workflow needs.

Marketing and Sales

Market Research: Your Customers and Competition Describe your ideal customer (who will be purchasing your product/service, key characteristics).

  • Include any research that has helped you identify and characterize your target customer.

Describe your position in the market, your strongest competitors, and how you intend to compete. 

  

Marketing Strategy and Tools Describe your overall marketing strategy, how you will find, engage, and build customers, including:

  • Traditional marketing tools (signage, storefront, collateral, advertising, promotion, uniforms,  mail, etc.).
  • Online marketing (website, social media, email marketing, text marketing, others).
  • Ecommerce (if applicable).
  • Describe in detail how you plan to sell your products or services online.
  • Describe how your best competitors utilize ecommerce and your strategy to improve on their practices.
  • Research and identify the different channels where you will sell your product or services. What is your expectation of sales?
  • Detail how will you take orders, process payments, and fulfill requests? 
  • Provide a detailed breakdown of the costs involved in creating, operating, and maintaining your ecommerce activities.

Sales Strategy Describe your sales process, activities you will conduct, obstacles you expect, how you will overcome them, and any customer service strategies to retain and expand your customer base.

Include k ey details about how you will operate your business.

  • Outline the workflow of your business and the processes and procedures you will put into place.
  • If applicable, provide details about how you will procure supplies, manufacture your product, and deliver your product or service to your customer. Include any equipment and facilities that you need.
  • Describe how you will measure the success of your operations for quality, efficiency, cost control, or other measures of performance. Include any testing.
  • Order fulfillment: describe your order fulfillment process, software to be used, and quality control methods.
  • Supply chain: describe products/materials you need to purchase in order to make your product, include primary and secondary sources for these. products/materials, lead times, purchasing methods, and tools.
  • Staffing: skill requirements, training program, supervision, outsourced functions, and hiring timeline.

Addendum: Licenses and Permits   *Addendums can include but are not limited to License and Permits*

Make a comprehensive list of all licenses and permits you will need to do business in your area.   

Your list should include the following: (For US-based businesses; requirements differ by country and region.)

  • Name under which you intend to do business
  • Permissions and/or limitations on the use of your property or facilities
  • Federal, state, and local licenses (city/county), permits, and certifications needed to do business in your area (e.g. business tax license, seller's permit, safety certifications, employer identification number, etc.)
  • Industry licenses needed for your particular area of business (contractor, electrician, daycare, beauty, etc.)
  • International and national intellectual property protection through trademarks, copyright, and patents.

An executive summary of any business plan is the overview of your entire business plan and should succinctly highlight the most important parts of the plan. You can further subdivide or consider the following aspects below on what constitutes an executive summary:

  • Identify your market for student applicants, who they are, their personal and financial backgrounds.
  • Industry Analysis – identify what type of teachers you would wish to have onboard your organization. Check on the demand out in the market and evaluate their skills and assess their teaching experiences.

Every businesses has always had a competitor out in the market most especially if the demand is high. In trying to figure out how your school is going to make money and compete with other businesses that might be offering similar services, you’ll want to perform a competitive analysis . This section of the business plan will feature the strengths and weaknesses of your organization and any barriers that will impede your company’s ability to compete. Some of these barriers might include rapidly changing technology or an inability to hire enough competent teaching staff.

In this section, you should write out how you plan on developing your business. What are your short-term and long-term goals for the school? How exactly are you going to achieve those goals? Describe your growth plan for the next few years, along side your pricing strategy such as would you be offering any scholarships, discounts for overachievers or those who rank high with their GPA’s or SAT scores. Take note that your pricing scheme would depend on your market you aim to serve. Lastly don’t forget to include your marketing strategy to attract students to your school.

It’s important to include in your business plan the organizational structure of the company, ownership details, and who is on the team. If you have a board of directors, you should also discuss their qualifications. This information, the operations and management section should also include the legal structure of your business.

This part of the plan should include your income projections for the next three years, a 12-month cash flow analysis , and a balance sheet and sustainability plan . If you are hoping to attract investors, you should also include a list of  all of your sources of funding, financial statements for the last three to five years, and the owners’ personal financial statements.

Measure a plan by readability and summarization. This could be as long as 30 to 50 pages depending on the details and scale of the what the business plan is comprised of. Chapter 7: The Business Plan

How are ventures actually formed and what is the role of the business plan?

Entrepreneurs respond to attractive opportunities by forming new ventures. In this chapter, we consider the five-step process for establishing a new enterprise. One particularly noteworthy step in the process is the development of a story and business plan. The story is a compelling synopsis of why this venture is needed at this moment of time and how it can achieve success. We then detail the task of writing a business plan, which is a significant and challenging effort for entrepreneurs.

Business Continuity Plan

UGA Students

Because disasters can routinely impact institutions of higher learning, representatives from the UGA Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) and UGA Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS), have been involved in emergency planning and disaster recovery planning in conjunction with local, state, and federal emergency planning and response agencies. However, the overall ability of the University to respond appropriately to a large-scale or extended emergency will also depend on the readiness of individuals and departments within the University of Georgia to respond appropriately. Therefore, to aid departments in their planning efforts, OEP is providing this planning tool to guide departmental discussions and planning efforts to address threats and emergencies that could have larger impacts in the community and on campus.

Business continuity and disaster recovery planning is an integral part of the University’s comprehensive emergency planning efforts. The BCP will adhere to an “all-hazards” approach to emergency planning. Due to UGA’s size and scope, BCP planning must also be done by each UGA department to ensure continuity of operations at every level on the campus.

The Office of Emergency Preparedness recognizes that emergency planning creates a burden for University departments. However, readiness at each level within the University is critical for successful management of large-scale emergencies. Although it may be necessary to make adjustments in departmental plans as new information is received and incorporated into the overall UGA Emergency Response Plan and the UGA BCP, it is important for departments to periodically review and make any changes to their BCP.  The goal of this planning exercise is to help departments consider the many issues they may face and then augment as appropriate for individual departments.

Decisions regarding UGA closings, travel restrictions, payroll implications, recommended personal protective equipment, etc. will be made at the Institutional level. However, other decisions (i.e. the care of laboratory animals, securing research projects, telecommuting assignments for departmental personnel, online instruction, etc.) will most likely be left to individual departments. Therefore, your department’s BCP should include responses to these and other issues specifically affecting your department.

The completed BCP should be used to educate faculty, staff, and students within each department about the department’s business continuity and emergency preparedness procedures. Steps should be taken to validate planning efforts with drills or exercises as the departmental plan evolves. Please note that completion of this planning tool does not constitute an “official” and final business continuity plan for the department. Continuous updates and revisions will be necessary as new information becomes available. Access to the completed written document should be restricted to authorized personnel who will need the information during an emergency event that warrants activation of your Business Continuity Plan.

Do not post the completed document on the Internet, or for public review, since it may contain sensitive information.

After you are registered and approved by OEP, you will receive an email informing you of your approval. You can then access your department’s BCP online tool generator .

Business Continuity Plan (BCP) Checklist

The following checklist identifies specific activities and suggestions to help departments in their continuity of operations planning efforts in order to resume departmental operations as quickly and efficiently as possible during and after an emergency that interrupts operations.

  IMPACT OF SERVICES : PLAN FOR THE IMPACT OF DEPARTMENTAL SERVICES:

  • Coordinate the development of the departmental Business Continuity Plan
  • Act as liaison between various departmental and university units
  • Coordinate departmental efforts during recovery
  • Assign an alternate BCP coordinator to serve as a backup and assist the BCP coordinator
  • Consider assembling an internal departmental continuity committee to gain input regarding the development of the BCP Plan.  Some individuals you may want to consider include your department head, assistant department head, an IT professional, and a representative from your department’s human resources or business services.

CONTACT INFORMATION

  • Plan for a notification method for contacting departmental employees, university units, vendors, students, as well as other contacts needed to continue departmental operations. For example, use a phone tree, create a departmental contact list, develop an email list-serve.

MISSION CRITICAL DEPARTMENTAL FUNCTIONS / SERVICES

  • Determine which departmental functions are mission-critical. Decide which processes need to be maintained or restored first to keep the departmental services and functions running. Then prioritize these services.
  • Determine an alternate recovery process for temporary recovery and for normal recovery
  • Determine the impact should there be a loss of essential / critical departmental functions / services / processes. Also, consider both monetary and non-monetary outcomes. These should be measured with respect to safety, compliance, property loss, fines, legal, and loss of critical services.

DATA AND TECHNOLOGY NEEDS

  • Develop a technology plan to determine which mission-critical data and technology components (both hardware and software) would be needed to recover documents, information, and research in the event of disruption of services. (Refer to UGA  Information Security’s link:  http://eits.uga.edu/access_and_security/infosec/pols_regs/policies/bcpdrp  for more information.)
  • Assess how quickly and accurately services can be restored. Perform a data recovery test, if possible.
  • Determine the effectiveness of the department’s data backup policies and procedures and who is responsible for maintenance of this documentation.

DEVELOP THE DEPARTMENTAL BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN

  • Determine necessary resources, facility and infrastructure requirements, as well as equipment and supplies needed for recovery of  mission critical departmental services and functions

COMMUNICATE THE PLAN

  • Provide access to the BCP to appropriate personnel. Be sure to also share evacuation and shelter-in-place procedures with department employees and students.

TEST AND MAINTAIN THE PLAN

  • Test the BCP upon completion and update it annually to ensure information is accurate. Be sure that any sensitive information in the BCP is securely stored.
  • BCP stands for Business Continuity Planning, or the practice of planning how your department will provide services or conduct departmental business during or after an emergency or disaster that may have both short-term and long-term consequences.
  • Developed by OEP, the BCP Tool Online Plan Generator is an easy and efficient web-based method to create a Business Continuity Plan (BCP). After department team members complete eight user-friendly sections, the system will automatically generate a department-specific BCP.
  • Department leads for continuity planning using a valid UGA MyID and password, can log into a secure link to request access to the BCP Tool: https://busfin3.busfin.uga.edu/oep/prepare_login.cfm .  Once your request has been reviewed, you will receive an email with a link to the BCP Tool which can be accessed with a valid UGA MyID and password.
  • Yes, upon login, registered BCP Tool users will be able to enter and edit each section of the BCP online plan generator as needed to view, edit, or complete their plans.
  • Upon completing the BCP, the program will automatically send OEP an email that the plan has been completed. After OEP has reviewed all sections in the BCP, team members connected with that department will receive an email from OEP with feedback/instructions related to the completed BCP.
  • The system will automatically create an annual email reminder to team members connected with a specific department that it is time to update their BCP.
  • Department Business Continuity Team members and their contact information
  • Essential services for your department and the individuals responsible for those services
  • Supplies, equipment, and materials needed to support essential department services
  • Critical department communication and IT services and the individuals responsible for those services
  • Individuals who manage vital departmental records and their contact information
  • Departmental emergency preparedness educational efforts
  • Departmental Pandemic plans
  • Training and testing of Departmental BCP’s
