The DSE writing exam is a test that assesses a candidate’s proficiency in the English language. The exam is split into two sections:

DSE Exam Sections

  • The first section tests the candidate’s ability to write a composition of at least 400 words on a given topic within 45 minutes.
  • The second section tests the candidate’s ability to write a response to a given prompt within 30 minutes.

It’s important to note that the DSE writing exam is graded on several criteria, including grammatical accuracy, vocabulary usage, sentence structure, and coherence of ideas. As such, candidates must familiarize themselves with the exam format and practice writing under timed conditions to improve their writing skills.

Grading System

In addition to understanding the format of the exam, candidates should also be aware of the scoring system. The DSE writing exam is scored on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest score possible. To achieve a high score, candidates must demonstrate a strong command of the English language and be able to effectively communicate their ideas clearly and concisely. By understanding the format and scoring system of the DSE writing exam, candidates can better prepare themselves for the test and increase their chances of acing it.

2. Key skills tested in the DSE writing exam

To ace the DSE writing exam, it is crucial to understand the key skills that are tested in the exam. The exam assesses your ability to communicate effectively in written English, with a focus on your ability to convey your ideas clearly and cohesively.

One of the key skills that are tested is your ability to organize your thoughts and ideas logically and coherently. To do this, you will need to have a clear understanding of the different types of writing structures and be able to apply them appropriately. You will also need to be able to use a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical structures accurately, to convey your ideas effectively. Another important skill that is tested in the DSE writing exam is your ability to write persuasively. This means that you will need to be able to present a coherent argument and support it with evidence and examples. You will also need to be able to anticipate and address any potential counterarguments or objections to your argument.

Finally, the DSE writing exam also tests your ability to write in a variety of different styles and genres, such as formal letters, reports, and essays. Each of these requires a different approach and set of skills, so it is important to be able to adapt your writing style accordingly. By understanding the key skills tested in the DSE writing exam, you can focus your preparation and ensure that you are fully prepared to ace the test.

3. Developing a study plan for the DSE writing exam

The DSE writing exam is a high-stakes test that requires a lot of preparation and practice. Developing a solid study plan is essential to ensure that you’re covering all the necessary content and improving your writing skills in the most effective way possible.

To begin with, start by familiarizing yourself with the exam format, scoring criteria, and time limits. This will help you determine what areas you need to focus on and how much time to allocate for each section. Next, create a schedule that outlines your study goals, deadlines, and practice sessions. It’s important to set realistic objectives and allocate enough time for review and reflection.

To improve your writing skills , you should read widely on a variety of topics and practice writing regularly. You can also benefit from getting feedback from your teachers, peers, or online resources. In addition to practicing writing, you should also work on your grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. There are many resources available online that can help you with this, including grammar guides, vocabulary lists, and writing prompts.

Finally, don’t forget to take breaks and relax! Studying for a high-stakes exam can be stressful, so make sure to take care of your mental and physical health during the process. With a solid study plan in place, you’ll be well on your way to acing the DSE writing exam.

4. Preparing for the DSE writing exam – Tips & tricks

The DSE writing exam is an important step towards achieving your academic and career goals. To prepare for the exam, it’s important to develop a solid plan that includes tips and tricks to help you succeed.

  • First , it’s essential to read widely and practice writing regularly. This will help you to develop your writing skills, expand your vocabulary, and improve your grammar. Make sure to read a variety of materials, including academic texts, news articles, and fiction. This will broaden your perspective and help you to develop a more nuanced understanding of the topics you’ll be writing about in the exam.
  • Second , practice writing under timed conditions. The DSE writing exam is timed, so it’s important to get used to writing quickly and efficiently. Try setting a timer for yourself and writing for a set amount of time each day. This will help you to build up your stamina and develop good time-management skills.
  • Third , review past exam papers and familiarize yourself with the format of the exam. This will help you to understand what’s expected of you and what the examiners are looking for. Pay attention to the types of questions that are asked and the types of responses that are expected. This will help you to structure your answers effectively and maximize your marks.
  • Finally , don’t forget to proofread your work carefully. Spelling and grammar mistakes can detract from the clarity and cohesiveness of your writing. Take the time to review your work and make any necessary edits before submitting your answers.

By following these tips and tricks, you’ll be well on your way to acing the DSE writing exam and achieving your academic and career goals.

5. Common mistakes to avoid in the DSE writing exam

The DSE writing exam is an important test that can determine your future academic or career prospects. To achieve a good score, you need to avoid making common mistakes that can cost you valuable marks. One of the main mistakes that students make is not reading the prompt carefully. It is important to understand exactly what the prompt is asking you to do before you start writing. This can save you from writing irrelevant content, which will lead to a lower score.

Another common mistake is not planning your essay before you start writing. This can lead to a disorganized structure and unclear ideas. It is important to spend some time planning your essay, outlining the main points and arguments you want to make, and ensuring that your essay has a clear and logical structure.

Additionally, using complex vocabulary and sentence structures that you are uncomfortable with can lead to mistakes and unclear ideas. It is better to use simple and clear language that you are confident with, rather than trying to impress the examiner with big words that you may misuse.

Finally, not proofreading your essay can lead to careless mistakes and lower your score. It is important to leave some time at the end of the exam to read over your essay and check for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can improve your chances of achieving a high score on the DSE writing exam.

6. Time management strategies for the DSE writing exam

Time management is crucial in the DSE writing exam. You have 40 minutes to complete the task, which includes planning, writing, and proofreading. Therefore, it’s essential to adopt some time management strategies to ensure you complete the exam within the given time frame.

Firstly, you should allocate some time for planning. Spend a few minutes reading the prompt and brainstorming ideas. Jot down some notes to help organize your thoughts, which will help you write more efficiently.

Once you have a clear plan of what you want to write, start writing. Keep an eye on the clock and aim to allocate 25-30 minutes for writing. Avoid spending too much time on any one section or paragraph. Instead, focus on writing clear and concise sentences that convey your ideas effectively. If you get stuck on a particular point, move on to the next section and come back to it later.

Finally, ensure that you proofread your work in the remaining time. It’s easy to make mistakes when rushing to finish, so it’s important to take the time to read through your work and correct any errors in grammar, spelling, or punctuation. You can also use this time to check that your writing flows logically and that you have addressed all the points in the prompt.

By adopting effective time management strategies, you can complete the DSE writing exam within the given time frame and ensure that you submit a well-written and error-free composition.

7. Techniques for brainstorming ideas and organizing your thoughts

Brainstorming ideas and organizing your thoughts is crucial when it comes to writing an effective DSE essay. Before you start writing, take some time to brainstorm and jot down any ideas that come to mind. This can be in the form of a mind map or a list of bullet points. Make sure to include any relevant examples, evidence, or arguments that support your thesis statement. Once you have your ideas written down, it’s time to organize them into a coherent structure. This can be done by creating an outline or framework for your essay. Start with a clear introduction that grabs the reader’s attention and sets the tone for the rest of the essay. Then, move on to your main points, ensuring you have enough supporting evidence to support your arguments. When organizing your ideas, it’s important to consider the overall flow of your essay. Each paragraph should seamlessly transition into the next, creating a logical and easy-to-follow structure. Make sure to use transitional phrases or sentences to link your ideas together and avoid abrupt shifts in the topic.

Another helpful technique is to create a rough draft of your essay before writing the final version. This will help you identify gaps in your argument or areas where additional evidence is needed. It will also allow you to refine your language and ensure your writing is clear and concise. Overall, effective brainstorming and organization are key to acing the DSE writing exam. By taking the time to plan and structure your essay, you’ll be able to write a compelling and persuasive piece that showcases your writing skills and knowledge of the topic at hand.

Writing Tips for Top Marks in DSE English (Paper 2)

By: Willow Hewitt 2021-01-13

At i-Learner, we are fortunate to teach a wide range of students. This helps us develop skills and tips that can help failing students get into university and set top students on the path to starred marks.

I am passionate about writing (I oversee i-Learner’s publications , and I write novels in my spare time), so paper 2 is my favourite one to work on. It’s also one that strong students can fail to reach their potential in as many schools don’t have time to mark and give feedback on a wide range of writing samples.

Over my years at i-Learner, I’ve worked with a number of these top students to help them achieve the best grade possible. Read on to discover some key skills needed to reach the top marks in HKDSE English Paper 2:

Make it Real

Multiple sections of the mark scheme for this paper make it clear that your writing must feel authentic. Examiners stress that your content should be engaging and show audience awareness and that the register, tone, style and organisation should be appropriate to the text type. However, most students create something that sounds like it’s being written in an exam (which it is, but it shouldn’t sound that way).

Good-mark example (personal letter): I hope you’re doing well. From your letter, it sounds like things at your job are difficult at the moment, but I’m sure they’ll improve soon.

Great-mark example (personal letter): Knowing you, I’m sure you’re kicking yourself about the situation at work. But, just like they always did when we were at school, things will turn around soon.

Follow the Conventions of the Task

As mentioned in the previous point, your writing needs to feel authentic. However, even students who think they understand this can still fall into the trap of structuring everything like an essay. The paragraph structures in essays are great – topic sentences, supporting details and transition phrases are fantastic. But they don’t belong in all types of writing.

Other types of writing can be similar to an essay in places because they’re performing the same function. For example, a debate speech is trying to argue a point, so it will use evidence in each paragraph, and a report needs to categorise things into clear sections, so it will have topic sentences. However, if all of your writing looks like an essay, you’re not thinking about it carefully enough.

Look at examples of different writing types and make sure you know how they’re different to essays. Organisation makes up a significant proportion of your paper 2 grade, so it’s important to get right. The story-writing task is the clearest example of one in which you need to know what is expected in terms of organisation. To get a top grade in this task, you need to include some of the following structural conventions: descriptive paragraphs, flashbacks, side-plots, rising and falling action, dialogue, starting in media res, paragraph lengths that match the pacing, and foreshadowing. Writing your ideas in a clear, chronological order will earn poor marks in this task.

Poorly organised example (story): Every year when he was growing up, Chris’s birthday was ignored. On his sixteenth birthday, it was no different. Walking home at the end of a damp autumn day, he kicked an empty can along the street and cursed himself for getting his hopes up. He shoved his front door open with his shoulder and saw a tuna sandwich on the table. Next to it was a note from his mum saying she’d be back late. He trudged to his bedroom.

Well organised example (story): Chris hadn’t expected much for his birthday, but he’d thought at least one person would have remembered. Walking home at the end of a damp autumn day, after failing yet another maths test and sitting through the world’s longest detention, he kicked an empty can along the street and cursed himself for getting his hopes up. Nobody had ever made a big deal out of his birthday, so why should his sixteenth have been any different? But what Chris didn’t know was that turning sixteen would change everything. As he shoved his front door open with his shoulder, it seemed like any other day. And just like always, there was a soggy tuna sandwich on the table next to a note from his mum saying she’d be back late.

‘Of course,’ he muttered, before trudging into his bedroom.

Ignore your First Ideas

Examiners read answers to the same questions over and over again. You will impress them significantly if you can present original ideas or support your points with unusual details. Your ideas must be relevant to the question, but this shouldn’t make you scared to include interesting concepts just because they’re not the most obvious. This paper also awards marks for supporting your points well, so as long as you can explain your ideas and make it clear that they are relevant, you should feel confident enough to include them.

Good-mark example (proposal): This service trip will teach students to appreciate their own lives and will help the needy members of our community.

Great-mark example (proposal): This service trip will not only make students aware of their obligations as members of a community, but it will also teach the transferable skills of teamwork, preparation and organisation, which will improve their work at school and make them more employable in future.

Focus on Variety

Two significant elements of the mark scheme (content and language) highlight the importance of variety in your writing. You need a wide range of ideas, vocabulary and grammar to do well in this paper. Strong students rarely think about this – they assume that these things will come out naturally as they write. However, we all have certain habits in our writing, and we tend to repeat phrases and grammatical structures that feel comfortable to us.

In order to ensure your writing has enough variety, it’s important to plan before you start. This can be time consuming at first, but the more you practise, the faster you get.

Unvaried language (article): Taking care of our environment is the most important aspect of preparing for the future. Many say that taking care of our environment is difficult and not the most important problem faced nowadays. However, the environment is important for our future, and the human race may not survive for many more years unless taking care of it becomes a priority.

Varied language (article): Taking care of our environment is the most essential aspect of preparing for the future. Many complain that this task is difficult and not the most significant problem faced nowadays. However, the natural world is vital to our continued existence, and the human race may not survive unless its care becomes our priority.

Know what a Good Answer Is

My final tip is to make sure you know what a top answer looks like. Read past paper answers along with examiners’ comments on the HKEAA website. Here are the papers from 2019 , 2018 and 2017 , or you can look at this list of core subject papers for even more options. Not only do these help you understand what makes a good answer, but you can also see the work strong students do to pull up their grades. For example, in the 2018 exemplar part 1, Task A was a letter to school parents about an upcoming trip. The student who wrote this exemplar edited their writing to improve it in the following ways:

First draft (formal letter): Before I go into the purpose of the trip, I will first give the necessary details.

Second draft (formal letter): Before I delve into the purpose of the trip, I will first provide the necessary details.

The changes to the words in bold not only demonstrate a greater vocabulary, but they also show a clear awareness of the letter’s audience. These are the sorts of changes that move students up to top grade bands.

DSE English – Integrated Tasks – A Complete Guide

The purpose of this text is to familiarise you with the steps of successfully completing Integrated Skills Tasks in the DSE Listening & Integrated Skills Examination.

Before the recording is played

Text Type: First , you should understand the common text types that appear in the DSE Listening & Integrated Skills Examination. The most common text types are Letter/Email, Article, Report, Speech, and Proposal. Although different text types have different structural features, each written task should contain at least three sections: (1) opening, (2) body paragraph(s) and (3) closing. You should memorise some sentence patterns that are useful for each text type. Second , you should understand that the task instructions may not explicitly tell you which text type is the text that you are asked to write. You need to identify the text type accurately by yourself.
Mark Distribution: Before 2017 DSE, all Integrated Tasks weigh the same (18 marks per task). Since 2017 DSE, each written task has a different total mark and this usually implies the Task Completion mark (i.e. how many “content point” you should include in the written task). Ideally, you should allocate the time for each written task according to its total mark.
Whether the task requires you to use information from the note-taking page: This is a very useful piece of information that most students do not pay attention to. If the written task requires you to use information from the note-taking page, it will explicitly tells you in the task instructions. If it doesn’t require you to use information from the note-taking page but you quote information from the page and include it in your written task, you will be penalised.

2020 Part A

For question 1 , write about 200 words.

You finally got the chance to eat at Hong Kong’s hottest new restaurant, Dim Sum one. Write a review for Eat & Drink, an online food guide that allows users to write their own reviews.

Write what you liked, what you didn’t like and if you would recommend this restaurant

You can choose to write about any of the following in your review.

Food, Service, Dining Environment, Price

Level 5 exemplar 1

Eat & Drink

Name: Dim Sum One

Type of Cuisine: Chinese dim sum

Best for: ☑ Children/ Family ☐ Romantic Date ☐ Business ☐ Special Occasions

Just a few months ago, a brand-new Chinese restaurant, Dim Sum one, was on its first exposure to the public located in Central. Dim Sum One has attracted a vast amount of Chinese food lovers and received an overall positive comment. I am glad I got the chance to give it a try, and here is my review!

Being a new Chinese restaurant, Dim Sum One targets high-quality traditional food Dim Sum. Just like what its owner Peter Wong said, ”within ten years, we will be the top Chinese restaurant in this food paradise''. They have great ambition and provide delicious food. I think their “Fantasy Bum'' is the best as it is made totally by your will which means you can choose the ingredients in the sauce and they will serve you with a tasty product. It’s hand-made and tastes a lot better than other restaurants, however, there is one thing I want to criticize for, that is they buy fish balls and Siu Mai from the supermarket instead of creating them themselves, it’s way too disappointing!

Their service is quite customer-friendly. From my observation, the chefs may come to you and ask for your opinion about the foods they made. It is very important for a restaurant to ask for the customer's feedback and make improvements. Besides they also design a birthday special party for kids aged under 14. It is warming that I saw them singing birthday songs to a little girl. It is for sure that their service is excellent!

Environment

The restaurant is located near Victoria Harbor, thus you will be able to view an eye-catching scenario picturing the crystal clear water and sky while you enjoy your meal. But one thing to note is that it took me 30 minutes searching for it therefore that is its discredit.

Worrying that a high-quality restaurant requires you to spend a big budget? Don't worry! For the first year, they have a 30% discount for everyone! The average price is around $60 KD a person per meal, but if you want to try tailor-made foods. it may be more expensive.

In short, I would recommend this restaurant to all of you. It is worth a try and suits family gathering the best! Don’t hesitate, go for it!

New English course studies pop star’s lyrics alongside classic literature

It turns out Taylor Swift could keep company with the Romantic-era poets

On a recent Monday afternoon, Professor Stephanie Burt asked some 200 students — packed into Lowell Lecture Hall for the popular new English course “Taylor Swift and Her World” — to consider their role as listeners to “Fifteen,” the second track off the superstar’s second album, “Fearless.”

In the song, Swift presents herself as a teenage girl who’s both relatable and aspirational with lyrics that reflect upon high school, friendship, and dating. Burt compared the song’s reflective qualities to William Wordsworth’s 1798  poem  “Tintern Abbey.”

“She’s establishing herself as a kind of ally for us, what the poet and literary theorist  Allen Grossman  calls a ‘hermeneutic friend,’” said  Burt , the Donald P. and Katherine B. Loker Professor in the Department of English. Or in other words, “the literary or musical text that you’re getting into is going to help you out, it simultaneously knows more than you do, and knows what’s going on with you.”

The course resonates with the many students who have been fans since childhood. Seated in tiered rows on the main floor and in the balcony, they nodded along intently with the lecture, occasionally laughing when Burt threw out an insider Swiftie reference.

It’s the largest class Burt has ever taught — and the largest taught in the arts and humanities this spring. The professor, who has long wanted to create a course centering the works of a songwriter, knew “all too well” that it was time to examine Swift’s writing through an academic lens.

“She’s one of the great songwriters of our time,” Burt said. “If she weren’t, she wouldn’t be this popular. And I love the idea that we’re going to spend this much time with her music.”

Xinran (Olivia) Ma ’26 and other students engage with the lecture.

The syllabus is organized around the “eras” of Swift’s career, starting with her 2006 debut album and progressing to her most recent. Students examine themes of fan and celebrity culture, whiteness, adolescence, and adulthood alongside songs by Dolly Parton, Carole King, Beyoncé, and Selena, and writing by Willa Cather, Alexander Pope, Sylvia Plath, and James Weldon Johnson.

“The best way to get someone into something is to connect it to something they already love,” Burt said, in an interview before class. “I do think there’s going to be a lot more Harvard students reading Alexander Pope because he’s in the Taylor Swift course than if he only showed up in courses that were entirely dead people.”

Burt explained that she is teaching Swift as a songwriter rather than a poet because writing for music is its own literary form, one that requires different skills than writing for the page. Burt and teaching fellow Matthew Jordan regularly unpack songs on the piano during class. During a recent class, the whole room broke out into spontaneous song as Jordan performed “Love Story.”

“Usually, poetry means works of art that use nothing but words that are created to be read on a page that do not have to be read aloud by the author,” Burt said. “Songwriters are writing for a melody; they are writing for singing interpreters. You are not getting all that you can out of a song if you are reading it on a page.”

‘Tortured poets’ department?

A painting of William Wordsworth.

What common themes do you see in these excerpts from William Wordsworth’s “Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey” and Taylor Swift’s “Fifteen”? Listen to the professor’s take below.

Transcript:

STEPHANIE BURT:  She [Taylor Swift] is far from the first or the only writer who has written looking back at her younger self and addressing someone else — a friend, a specified reader, an audience — as a younger version of themselves. “I’m going to tell you what I wish someone had told me when I was that age, because I look at you — listener, reader, sister named Dorothy — and I see myself when I was that age, and by the way, I’m really close to that age. I’ve only grown up a little. I’m going to show you how that works.” That is a central trope of the literary movement which generates “tortured poets,” which we call Romanticism.”

Cormac Savage ’25, a concentrator in Romance languages and literatures and government, has been a Swift fan since age 6, when he received a platinum edition copy of “Fearless” for Christmas. So when he saw the course listing, he knew immediately that it was the one.

“I think I’ll come out of this English class with a greater knowledge of music as a byproduct of studying literature, which is a really unique point of this class,” said Savage, who is looking forward to reading Wordsworth and comparing his poetry to Swift’s album “Folklore.”

Jada Pisani Lee ’26, who is studying computer science, has also been a fan since elementary school. The sophomore said she enrolled in the class to learn more about Swift’s impact on culture, from music to style to copyright law.

While some critics may not consider Swift classically worthy of English class analysis, Burt politely disagrees.

“Half the English-language authors we now think of as ‘classic’ and ‘high culture’ and ‘serious’ were disparaged because they were popular and doing the ‘pop thing’ in their time,” Burt said. “Often the ones who were disparaged because they were doing the ‘pop thing’ were authors who were writing for women when serious prestige classics were the domain of expensively educated white men.”

“Half the English-language authors we now think of as ‘classic’ and ‘high culture’ and ‘serious’ were disparaged because they were popular and doing the ‘pop thing’ in their time.” Stephanie Burt

The professor hopes students will gain not only a deeper appreciation for Swift but a new set of tools for literary and cultural analysis and a greater engagement with authors beyond the pop star.

“If I were not able to connect Taylor’s catalog to various other, older works of literature, I wouldn’t be teaching this class,” Burt said. “But I also wouldn’t be teaching this class if I didn’t really love her songs and find her worthy of sustained, critical attention. She really is that good.”

2. Learning English through Popular Culture

You are the host of “Teen Chat”, a YouTube Channel that explores a wide range of topics from a teenage perspective. Write an article for Teen Magazine about why you started this channel and what you have learned in the process.

Teen Chat — A Teenage Channel

Teen Chat is now a very popular YouTube Channel among young people. It aims to give a voice to the youth in a society where the voices of teenagers are usually unheard and subdued. In recent years, the suicide rate among teens has been unprecedentedly high. A recent survey reveals that many teenagers feel hopeless about the future and that they feel helpless about many problems facing them such as social expectations, intergenerational difference among family members, school performance, peer pressure, bullying at school, to name a few. It is alarming that the pillars of the future are so desperate that they have no choice but to resort to suicide. In view of the depressing situation, I have started the channel to explore various topics and issues from the youth perspective so that it resonates with teenagers who will then feel empowered.

As a host of “Teen Chat”, I have learnt that most of the teenagers need so much to be listened to and to be understood by the adults, especially their parents. Having an intensive interview with teenagers from various secondary schools in Hong Kong, I realize that teenagers seldom have quality conversation with their parents over topics that are intimate to them, plus they usually find themselves being ignored and misunderstood by their parents.  For example, when it comes to what to study at the university or what career to choose after graduation, it often leads to heated argument and even violent conflict between parents and their children. An interviewee named Joyce revealed that her parents would not have an open conversation or discussion with her over her decision to study fine art at the university. Even Joyce tried to convince them that she had shown artistic talents and abilities in various art competitions, her parents would not listen but insisted that she was chasing some unrealistic and nonsensical dream. They not only rejected her decision but also threatened her to study business and finance; otherwise, they would not pay for the school tuition fees. Joyce felt disregarded and helpless. When I retold the story in Teen Chat, many viewers commented that they were facing similar problem and feeling upset about their parents being nonchalant towards their dreams.

Moreover, I have found that almost all teenagers are weak and fragile psychologically and in need of acceptance and encouragement, especially their parents and teachers and classmates.  Most teenagers revealed that under the result-oriented learning atmosphere which put so much emphasis on correctness, they were very afraid to make mistakes because they would be scolded and rejected by their elders and would be laughed and mocked by their peers. For example, an interviewee named Jess from a famous secondary school revealed that as she was not quite good at science subjects compared to her peers, she was very afraid of being asked to answer questions by science teachers during class and felt very ashamed each time after learning that her answer was wrong in front of all her smart classmates. Because of the many mistakes she had made and her poor results in science subjects, she felt that she was not worthy as she was looked down upon by her teachers and classmates. She had lost confidence almost in everything she did. When I retold the story in Teen Chat, many viewers commented that they were quite upset about the fact that instead of giving guidance and encouragement to them, how few chances the adults would give them and how easily the adults would give them up when they had made mistakes or had not performed or behaved well as expected .

The Youtube Channel Teen Chat has not only attracted the society’s attention to teenage voices but also raised the awareness of the society of the difficult situations faced by teenagers and their concerns. Consequently, the Government has initiated and rolled out various plans and measures in support of teenagers in terms of education, social welfare and health. Teen Chat has finally achieved its ultimate aim.
