What Is a Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your fashion business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan

If you’re looking to start a fashion business or grow your existing fashion business you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your fashion business in order to improve your chances of success. Your fashion business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Source of Funding for Fashion Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a fashion business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable. But they will want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business.

The second most common form of funding for a fashion business is angel investors. Angel investors are wealthy individuals who will write you a check. They will either take equity in return for their funding, or, like a bank, they will give you a loan. Venture capitalists will not fund a fashion business.

How to write a business plan for a fashion business.

Your business plan should include 10 sections as follows:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of fashion business you are operating and the status; for example, are you a startup, do you have a fashion business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of fashion businesses.

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the fashion business industry. Discuss the type of fashion business you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of fashion business you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types:

  • Fast Fashion : this type of fashion business identifies current fashion trends and brings them to market quickly.
  • Haute Couture : this type of fashion business offers high end fashion.
  • Bespoke Tailoring : clothing designed for the customer as the result of a consultation.

In addition to explaining the type of fashion business you operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include sales goals you’ve reached, new store openings, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the fashion business. While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the fashion business industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy particularly if your research identifies market trends. For example, if there was a trend towards street fashion, it would be helpful to ensure your plan calls for a line of urban clothing.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your fashion business plan:

  • How big is the fashion business (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your fashion business. You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your fashion business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: college students, sports enthusiasts, soccer moms, techies, teens, baby boomers, etc.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of fashion business you operate. Clearly baby boomers want different fashion items than teens.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other fashion businesses. Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes non-fashion oriented apparel and used apparel among others.

With regards to direct competition, you want to detail the other fashion businesses with which you compete.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What products do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide superior products?
  • Will you provide products that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you make it easier or faster for customers to acquire your products?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing plan.

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a fashion business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : in the product section, you should reiterate the type of fashion business that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to clothing, will you offer items such as accessories, shoes, bags, etc.?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the items you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your fashion business and your distribution method. Document whether you will sell your fashion items yourself through a storefront and/or website. Likewise, document if you will sell your products via distributors and who you expect they will be.

Promotions : the final part of your fashion business marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Making your fashion business’s storefront (if applicable) extra appealing to attract passing customers
  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local bloggers and websites
  • Social media advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your fashion business such as serving customers, procuring inventory, keeping the store clean, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to serve your 10,000th customer, or when you hope to reach $X in sales. It could also be when you expect to hire your Xth employee or launch a new location.

Management Team

To demonstrate your fashion business’s ability to succeed as a business, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in the fashion business. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in fashion businesses and/or successfully running retail and small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Fashion Financial Projections

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you serve 100 customers per day or 200? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Example 5 Year Annual Income Statement

Balance Sheets : While balance sheets include much information, to simplify them to the key items you need to know about, balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. For instance, if you spend $100,000 on building out your fashion business, that will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $100.000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Example 5 Year Annual Balance Sheet

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt. For example, let’s say a distributor approached you with a $100,000 order, that would cost you $50,000 to fulfill. Well, in most cases, you would have to pay that $50,000 now for supplies, equipment rentals, employee salaries, etc. But let’s say the company didn’t pay you for 180 days. During that 180 day period, you could run out of money.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a fashion business:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment like furniture, sewing machines, etc.
  • Cost of maintaining an adequate supplies and inventory
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Example 5 Year Annual Cash Flow Statement

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your store design blueprint or location lease.

Fashion Business Plan Summary

Putting together a business plan for your fashion business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will really understand the fashion business, your competition and your customers. You will have developed a marketing plan and will really understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful fashion business.

Including an exit strategy is essential because it outlines how investors will eventually realize a return on their investment. Even if the business is doing well, investors might want to cash out or transition their stake. For instance, in a clothing store, the exit strategy could involve selling the business, going public, or passing it on to a new owner. This reassures potential investors that their investment is not just a one-way commitment but part of a well-considered plan that aligns with their financial goals.

Starting a clothing line can be an exciting and rewarding venture for those with a passion for fashion and entrepreneurship. Whether you are a seasoned designer or a newcomer to the industry, setting up a clothing line requires careful planning and execution to ensure success.

Before you jump into the world of fashion, it is important to understand what goes behind the scenes of a clothing business. From creating a professional line sheet to meeting production costs, here are the steps to starting a clothing line:

Define your brand: A successful clothing line starts with a clear vision and a defined brand identity. Consider your target market, style, and values, and choose a name that reflects your brand.

Research and plan: Conduct thorough research on the industry, competition, and trends, and create a business plan that outlines your goals, budget, and marketing strategies.

Create a line sheet: A line sheet is a crucial tool for presenting your designs to retailers and manufacturers. A professional line sheet should include product images, descriptions, pricing, and order minimums.

Set up production: Find reliable manufacturers and suppliers that can produce your designs at a reasonable cost. It is essential to consider the quality, lead time, and minimum order quantities.

Market and sell: Develop a marketing plan that aligns with your brand and target market. Utilize social media, influencer partnerships, and fashion shows to increase brand visibility and drive sales.

While starting a clothing line can be challenging, the rewards of creating a successful brand are significant. Ten Values Clothing is a prime example of a successful clothing brand that prides itself on sustainability, ethics, and quality.

If you are interested in starting an apparel company, there are various resources available, such as books on starting a clothing line and online courses on running a successful clothing line. Additionally, online platforms such as Meet Yours Fashion and Create a Clothing Line Online can help you create and sell your designs.

Unfortunately, some clothing websites, such as Necessary Clothing and the Unknown Planner Company, have closed down, highlighting the importance of adaptability and resilience in the industry. In conclusion, starting a clothing line requires dedication, creativity, and a sound business strategy. By following these steps and staying true to your brand, you can create a successful clothing line and make your mark in the fashion industry.

Are you interested in starting a clothing boutique, but not sure where to begin? With the right planning and strategies in place, you can create a successful and profitable boutique that stands out in the competitive fashion industry.

Structure Clothes and Outfit Planning Template: Before you start selling clothing online or in-store, it’s important to structure your clothes and create an outfit planning template. This will help you determine what types of clothing you want to sell and how they fit together in a cohesive fashion outline. You can also use this template to lay out clothes in your store and make it visually appealing to customers.

How to Start Selling Clothing Online and How Much Money You Need: Selling clothing online is a great way to reach a wider audience and increase your sales. To start an online clothing business, you will need to create an online retailer business plan and determine how much money you need to invest. Consider using platforms such as Easyclothes or VS Clothing Line to help you get started.

Create Your Own Clothing Line and Build a Brand: If you want to create your own line of clothing, you will need to design and create your pieces, define your brand, and create a line sheet in fashion to showcase your collection. You can start with a small collection and build from there.

Opening a Clothing Store Set Up and Layout: Setting up a physical clothing store requires careful planning and consideration of factors such as location, size, and store layout. You can use clothing store setup ideas to create a visually appealing and functional space for your customers.

Business Plan and Startup Strategies: Creating a business plan for a retail store or boutique is crucial to the success of your business. It should outline your business goals, target market, marketing strategies, financial projections, and more. Use examples of a business plan for a boutique to help guide you.

Costs and Funding for Your Clothing Boutique: Starting a fashion business with no money may seem daunting, but there are ways to minimize costs and secure funding. Research small boutique business plan options, and consider mobile boutique business plans to get started with less upfront investment.

Defining Your Brand and Products: To stand out in the crowded fashion industry, you need to define your brand and products. Consider what makes your clothing boutique unique, and what you can offer customers that they can’t find elsewhere. You can also define your brand through marketing and advertising strategies.

Starting a clothing boutique takes careful planning and dedication, but with the right strategies and resources, you can create a successful and profitable business that you’re passionate about. Remember to define your brand, create a business plan, and set up your store or online business for success.

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Sample Clothing Line, (The Company) was registered in the Province of British Columbia on January 15, 2020 by CEO and Creative Director, Sara Jane.  Sara will establish the company as a street style clothing brand for a male, female, non-binary audience, of youth consumers ages 18 – 28.

Through an aggressive digital marketing strategy, Mrs. Jane will develop a community of “advocates” purchasing the company’s comfortable, sustainable, yet authentic clothing.  Moreover, a collaboration between independent artists, and the company will make the Sample Clothing Line platform truly unique.  “At the very core of the Sample Clothing Line brand is a belief that art can unite us through fashion.  Our platform enables artists to showcase their work through the very clothes we create.  As the pioneers of this platform we’ve been met with abounding support by our target audience, local artists, and the slow fashion community.” – CEO and Creative Director, Sara Jane

For the first two years of operation Sample Clothing Line will execute a purely digital strategy; marketing its products and building its community on social media; while selling apparel through the company’s online store.  In May of 2021 the company will officially launch in Canada, establishing its domestic customer-base.  In the following year, Sample Clothing Line will expand into the US, establishing itself as a sustainable, purpose-driven street style brand.  In Year 3 the company will continue its growth in the North American market, while developing two physical stores located in strategic cities.

Today more than ever, youth want to support conscious brands.  In fact, 70% of streetwear’s young fans consider themselves as socially-conscious.  Sample Clothing Line has identified the massive market opportunity for a clothing line that can captivate its young audience through positive brand messaging.  Sample Clothing Line is just that, a brand that is artistic, grounded in social justice, while offering the most coveted selection of street style fashion available.

The company is seeking a CAD $60,000 loan through Futurpreneur Canada and the BDC, primarily to expand the company’s website, e-commerce store, and for the garment-making of its 2021 clothing line.  This funding in combination with Sara Jane’s initial investment, and 10 year background in the industry, will enable Sample Clothing Line to streamline its market entry, and ensure an effective ascent in the Street Style Fashion industry.

2.0 BUSINESS OVERVIEW

“Sample Clothing Line ” is a street style fashion brand serving a youth audience aged 18 – 28 years old.  The company is focused on establishing itself with a brand identity rooted in vital issues for youth consumers, such as social justice, sustainability, individuality and transparency.

2.1 Business Summary

With over 10 years of experience in the Fashion and Beauty industry, Mrs. Jane plans to exercise her experience with Sample Clothing Line.  The company will take an ethical approach to Street Style fashion by removing elements of exclusivity, hype culture, status symbolism; which are commonly practiced is the Streetwear Industry.  Rather, Sample Clothing Line will continue building its community through principles of inclusion, art, positivity, and celebration.

For the first two years of operation Sample Clothing Line will exclusively sell it’s clothing products online through its flagship ecommerce store.  Moreover, the company will capitalize on the availability of social media platforms hosting an abundance of target customers including Instagram, Tik Tok, and Twitter.  Later in Year 3 Sample Clothing Line plans to open two physical brand stores in strategic cities across North America.

Throughout this stage of growth the company will further differentiate itself by establishing a platform where artists can collaborate and bring new, innovative fashion items to Sample Clothing Line’s customers.  Instead of giving artists “free range”, Sample Clothing Line will work with them to develop fashion that is cohesive with the brand’s current or upcoming clothing line.  Together, the Sample Clothing Line brand will serve it’s audience by creating sustainable clothing; both environmentally and socially, and progressing individuality over hype culture.

2.2 Industry Overview

We estimate the size of the global streetwear market at USD $185 billion in annual sales, making it by some estimates about 10% of the entire global apparel and footwear market.  Streetwear’s impact – both on retail culture and the numbers involved – has caught the attention of some of the most iconic, established brands in the retail, luxury goods, and fashion industry in general.

Streetwear players come from various parts of the fashion industry. There are pure streetwear brands, while sportswear names are developing their traditional portfolio of sports equipment into a growing streetwear portfolio with the concept of cool, hip sneakers and hoodies. In addition, luxury brands are also working to gain a significant stake in the streetwear market.

2.3 Mission & Vision Statement

Our mission is to promote slow fashion to our target audience.

5.0 market overview.

Overall, there has been significant growth in the Street Style Fashion Industry.  We estimate the size of the global streetwear market at $185 billion in annual sales, making it by some estimates about 10% of the entire global apparel and footwear market.  Streetwear’s impact – both on retail culture and the numbers involved – has caught the attention of some of the most iconic, established brands in the retail and luxury goods sectors and fashion industry generally. Streetwear players come from various parts of the fashion industry. There are pure streetwear brands, while sportswear names are developing their traditional portfolio of sports equipment into a growing streetwear portfolio with the concept of cool, hip sneakers and hoodies. 3

5.1 Market Segment

The Street Style Fashion market is divided into four segments:

1. Product type:

Footwear is the key driver of purchases. More than half (62%) of consumer survey respondents selected footwear as the product they were most likely to buy, followed by roughly a third (30%) who selected tops, including both T-shirts and hoodies. Only 6% of consumer respondents selected accessories.  The general appeal of sneakers and shoes helps to explain footwear’s strong showing. This sector is powered primarily by big players ( Nike , adidas , Puma ) and plenty of smaller labels, bolstered by constant variety (endless collaborations), extreme versatility (shoes can be worn with all manner of clothing) and relatively affordable price points in comparison to luxury clothing.

In contrast to consumers’ reported desires, industry respondents overall reported hoodies, T-shirts and footwear to be their best-selling products at an equal rate. However, when looking specifically at luxury streetwear brands, a higher rate (72%) reported sneakers as their best-selling products, compared with 58% for hoodies and T-shirts. Companies who tactfully introduce sneakers to their product offering can meet the consumer’s demand and enter this market.

2. Cost per product:

Nine percent of North American and European respondents reported spending $500-$1,000 per month on streetwear, while 18% of respondents in Asia reported spending this amount. Meanwhile, 33% of North American and European consumers reported spending less than $100 a month, while only 21% of Asian respondents reported spending less than $100 a month.  In terms of average spend per streetwear product, more than half (61%) of respondents from North America and Europe reported an average spend of $100-$300, while 11% reported an average spend of $300-$500.  Average spend per product spend jumps significantly when looking at data from Asian respondents. Among Korean and Chinese respondents, 20% reported an average spend of $300-$500. By far, Japanese respondents reported the highest average spend, with 28% reporting an average spend of $300-$500 per product and another 32% reporting an average spend of $500 or more per product. 5

fashion clothing business plan sample

3. Type of Fashion Companies:

These segments include: high street fashion brands, mid-range fashion brands, luxury brands, sportswear brands, footwear brands, e-commerce retailers, freelance creative brands.

4. Regional Interests:

When measuring why consumers like streetwear, North American and European consumer respondents placed higher importance on streetwear’s community aspect in comparison to newer markets, such as Asia. Among North American and European consumer respondents, close to half (40%) indicated community was a key factor, compared to only 12% of respondents in Asia. Meanwhile, almost half (41%) of Chinese and Japanese respondents indicated political statement as a key factor determining why they like streetwear, while only 11% of North American and European respondents reported political statements. 6

5.2 Market Trends

ECOMMERCE FASHION INDUSTRY

There are four notable opportunities driving growth in the ecommerce fashion industry:

  • Expanding global markets outside the West
  • Increasing online access and smartphone penetration
  • Emerging worldwide middle-classes with disposable income
  • Innovating technologies to create experiential ecommerce

PERSONALIZATION OF PRODUCTS

According to data presented by Nosto at a recent Growing Your Online Funnel Webinar , personalization is a leading factor in ecommerce at large:

  • 43% of purchases are influenced by personalized recommendations or promotions
  • 75% of consumers prefer brands to personalize messaging, offers, and experiences
  • 94% of companies see personalization as critical to current and future success 7

5.4 Competitive Advantage

Sample Clothing Line’s competitive advantage lies in its ability to understand the audience.

5.5 Risk Analysis

The most notable risk factors for the company include:

Inventory Management: If too many pieces of clothing are produced the company may be at a loss.  If not enough clothing is produced the company may be seen as a standard streetwear company “creating hype”.

Trend Analysis: In a perfect world the company’s products will represent trends on the rise, and trends in style.  However, if the company is selling products that are out of style it may lose appeal and credibility.

Marketing: This is a sensitive area that must be executed carefully.  The company’s brand identity and messaging must be in parallel with the target audiences expectations.  If at any time the brand is misrepresented, customers may be lost.

Covid-19: Considering the company’s digital strategy, Covid-19 only poses a minimal risk.  Sample Clothing Line will continue its digital strategy until Year 3, where two physical brand stores will be opened.  At that time the global population will be largely vaccinated, and if Covid-19 posed an additional risks the digital strategy could be continued.

Industry Landscape: The sheer competitive landscape of the clothing industry poses a huge risk to industry players.  Sample Clothing Line plans to minimize this risk by offering products that form a cult-like community of customers.  The company’s products will be of the highest quality fabrics, sourced sustainably, and designed by local artists and our creative team to satisfy our customers desire to express individuality and unite for social justice.

6.0 SALES & MARKETING PLAN

Our customers’ problem is they feel like none of the standard stores or shopping malls have clothing that suits them. It’s all fast fashion with no soul, or purpose behind it. All the brand logos and clothing items look the same. Our target customer wants a brand they can be a part of, and belong to.

6.1 Target Customer

Our target customer has the following characteristics:

  • 18 – 28 years of age
  • All genders
  • Low-medium income quintile ($35,000 – $45,000)
  • Socially conscious, likes to support good causes
  • Passionate about music: rap, punk, r&b, hip hop, metal
  • Considers fashion as a way to express their personality
  • Price conscious with new brands but will buy in once brand trust has been gained
  • Cares about outward appearance but not in a materialistic sense
  • Either skateboards, snowboards or surfs
  • Health conscious and loves brands that provide knowledge on health and wellness
  • Cares about shipping prices

6.2 Key Channels

Social Media Marketing: Our young audience lives on social media.  By engaging daily on Instagram, Tik Tok and Twitter we plan to build our Sample Clothing Line community.  Our competitors have proven that social media is the most effective medium to reach 18 – 28 year olds.

Instagram Ads: Pay per click advertising (PPC), and specifically Instagram ads are an excellent way to grow our customer-base due to the availability of targeted marketing geographically and demographically.

Brand Partnerships: By partnering with other companies to create specialty items we receive visibility that wouldn’t otherwise be there.   Brand partnerships are seen as a crucial channel for growth in the Street Style fashion industry.

Muse Marketing: This is our proprietary approach to “influencer marketing”.  We want to get away from the term influencer as much as possible because partnering with influencers will lose a great deal of respect from our audience. However, people who have real, influential power will be sources of collaboration for our brand and we will call on them to publicly support us.  Through muse marketing we will develop brand advocates that lead people to live a more positive, happy and healthy life, by standing up Sample Clothing Line’s values.

Just like we did in the clothing retail business plan , the business will be headed by the owner and they will hire managers to run various aspects of the business. They key to the success of this business is appointing the right person on the right position.

2.3 Customers of Fashion Industry

Like any other business, it is important to decide the customers that you will be dealing as a part of the business. If you do not have a clear idea of the customers, you will be dealing, the business can never be profitable. The customers of the fashion industry will be the following:

  • People who want custom-made designer clothing and accessories.
  • Movie crews who need costumes for a movie.
  • Retail stores who want to market premium clothing and accessories.
  • People looking for wedding and party dresses.

2.4 Business Target

Fashion Industry Business Plan Template - 3 Years Profit Forecast

Company Summary

3.1 company owner.

Sarah Carnegie is the person who will be the owner of the business. She is a veteran fashion designer from America holding many awards and accolades. She also happens to be quite rich and generating the funds for the business will not be an issue for her. All that makes Sarah the best candidate for this business plan fashion industry.

3.2 Why the Fashion Industry is being started?

The next thing that we need to talk about is why the fashion startup business plan is being started. There are a number of reasons for that. First and foremost, Sarah always wanted to start a luxury clothing and accessories line of herself and now is the time for her to do it. Secondly, Sarah has recently been fired from her job and she no longer wants to be the employee, she wants to be the boss. With the hundreds of millions of dollars burning a hole in her account, she can do whatever she wants.

3.3 How the Fashion Industry will be started?

One of the most important things to discuss in any start up fashion business plan is how the business will be started. Thankfully, this fashion business plan template free includes that too.

Step1: Market Need Analysis

The first thing needed to be done before starting the business is market need analysis. This will tell us whether or not there is a need for the services we are going to provide. Just like a lingerie boutique business plan , the business cannot be successful without it.

Step2: Developing a Brand

This is the single most important part in this whole business. Luxury goods are only as good as the brand name printed on them. We need to establish Apple Fashion as a brand that people can trust if we want to see any measure of success in the business.

Step3: Opening an Outlet

The first outlet of the business will be opened right in the front of Eiffel Tower in Paris. That must be expensive but remember the hundreds of millions of dollars burning a hole in Ms. Carnegie’s account? She’ll use them.

Step4: Establishing an Online Presence

Having an online presence is perhaps even more important than having an outlet in front of the Eiffel Tower. Thankfully though, it is not as expensive as that. So Sarah will hire a web designer to make a website for her brand to make the brand known to the public.

Step5: Promotion and Marketing

Next up, collaboration will be done with prominent celebrities to endorse and promote the products from Sarah’s brand. This is also very important because people follow these people and we can use that as leverage to create sales.

Fashion Industry Business Plan Template - Startup Cost

The next important thing is finalizing the services that the business will offer. There can be a million services that an example of a fashion business plan can have, However, obviously, we cannot start providing every single one of the services. That will not be a smart move. We are a bunch of smart people and we need to make a really smart move in the fashion business plan samples that we create.

The services included in this fashion business plan pdf will be:

Costume Design

The main service of the fashion industry will be to design costumes for movies and TV.

Wedding Dress Design

People who want designer dresses for their wedding can also hire our services to get the dresses designed.

Theme Dress Design

Dress designing for theme parties will also be one of the services.

Custom-Made Accessories

We will also design, manufacture, and commission custom-made fashion accessories for our customers.

Marketing Analysis of Fashion Industry

The single most important part of any fashion business plan examples is the marketing analysis of the business. It is in this step that we have a look at what the market needs and how we can make a name in the market. This step is also a part of the streetwear brand business plan , but it is even more important here because the fashion industry is a congested one and the only way to make a profit is by careful marketing analysis.

Market trends and marketing segmentation are some of the most important parts of any fashion business plan presentation. Let’s have a look at them.

5.1 Market Trends

Having a look at the market trends is very important for writing a fashion company business plan. If we have a look at the market trends of the industry over the last decade, people have moved towards economically priced fashion accessories and products. If we are in for starting a fashion label business plan, the best way is to offer premium goods at a discounted price. By doing that, we can get a lot of customers and make a lot of profit.

5.2 Marketing Segmentation

No fashion marketing plan example can be complete without the proper marketing segmentation. Here’s the marketing segmentation that faces our business:

Fashion Industry Business Plan Template - Marketing Segmentation

5.2.1 Showbiz

The biggest market segment for the business will be the showbiz industry.

5.2.2 Private Customers

Small businesses that show an interest in our business can sell our product and will make a market segment for us.

5.2.4 Retail Customers

The standard clothing and accessories made by the business will be sold through our own outlets to the retail customers.

5.3 Business Target

  • To become the most esteemed fashion goods producer in the world.
  • To make luxury fashion goods accessible for everyone.
  • To gain fame and recognition.

5.4 Product Pricing

The products of Apple Fashion will be priced below what the competition asks for their products. This will be done to make sure that we get business and the goal of making fashion products affordable for everyone can be realized.

Marketing Strategy

Just like a sewing business plan , we need to have a solid marketing strategy to make the business a success. This sample fashion business plan does contain that and will guide you how to use it. Staffing & Training:

Operational process:, equipment & software:.

9. Appendix

The appendix section of your plan should include any additional information supporting your business plan’s main content, such as market research, legal documentation, financial statements, and other relevant information.

  • Add a table of contents for the appendix section to help readers easily find specific information or sections.

You know: your chunky knits, your jeans, your graphic tops, even your crop tops if the situation is right! Business casual is somewhere between a full suit (which is just business attire) and a tee and jeans (which is just casual attire)—as the name implies, it theoretically straddles these two dress codes effortlessly. In practice, it's a little harder to pull off, but that's what we're here for. We've got a few inspo outfits to help you navigate the minefield of business casual dressing.

A Coat and Jeans

This is a good foundation for a business casual outfit. Just switch out your trousers for jeans and keep the rest of your outfit the same.

If you want to retain the "business" vibe, swap out this bomber for a blazer (or layer a structured shirt underneath). Tie up the top if you're worried about your belly button showing.

A Slouchier Suit

Similarly, this is suit-esque, just slouchier. The material in the jacket and pants is a little softer, and keeping the sweater collar popped feels more laidback instead of fussy. The bag and shoes are still nice and work-appropriate, it's important to note.

Fancy Denim

With an Oxford shirt on top and chunky loafers on bottom, there's still some structure to the look—which means you can get away with jeans. The print on the denim is cool and funky, and you'd style them like printed trousers.

A Patterned Sweater

Instead of a button-down shirt, how about a statement sweater? This option is slouchy and cool (and no doubt more comfortable than a collared shirt), but keep the trousers and boots so there's still a touch of formality.

Tonal Beige

This head-to-toe tan knit is a glorious execution of the style. Everything's a cozy soft knit (and a t-shirt peeks out from underneath the sweater), but everything's high quality—which is an important part of making it look office-appropriate.

A Statement Blazer

Taking the basic principle of blazer and jeans, why not spice things up a bit by replacing your black blazer with something a bit more textured? These pals are essentially using the same formula (we love a matching BFF): visual interest on top, neutral on bottom.

The key is to have everything be a darker rinse and have everything match or near-match, that way it just looks like a denim dress suit!

Oversized Knits

This long tunic turtleneck would be divine for sitting on the couch and having a warm beverage. But you can bring it into your business casual repertoire by pairing it with stiffer pieces: jacket, bag, and boots.

A Cardigan as a Top

Here Bella Hadid uses a cardigan as a top and plays with layering, allowing the top to peek out under her blazer. Opt to button all the buttons if you'd rather not show skin.

A Nicer Coat

White denim in winter is absolutely fine, in case you were wondering. If you want to ground the look, use a bulkier jacket to make it clear this is a wintry outfit. You could even do white fashion sneakers in place of loafers here.

A Graphic Sweater

If a graphic tee or sweater feels out of place as normal workwear, save it for Casual Fridays. This one is still deeply cool and, at the very least, a conversation starter.

A Leather Skirt

Leather as a concept doesn't have to be reserved for business casual attire, but a patent leather button skirt is a bit edgier than, say, a leather or vegan leather blazer. If you did want to make this business-appropriate, swap the tee out with a collared shirt. As it is, though, this outfit is chic and cool in all the right ways.

A Canadian Tuxedo

If you're feeling daring, use your denim pieces as if they were a suit and pair them together. In that case, you'll want to use denim that isn't distressed as the pants are here, and you'll want to use two pieces that are similar in color.

Suit Shorts

Like her sister, Gigi Hadid has some strong street style creds. Weather permitting, emulate her by getting some formal shorts (or turning up some formal capris, as she does) and pairing them with a blazer in a similar color. In colder weather, wear tights.

Black Tights

This is not for the faint of heart (or for the everyday office). If you work for a fashion house or magazine—or anywhere else where it won't cause people to be shocked—it's okay to dip a toe into the "no pants" trend. Just use some very opaque tights, okay? (And if that's too much for you, opt for a mini instead!)

Don't bother with copy and paste.

Problem & solution, problem worth solving.

There are several important needs in the western wear apparel business that are being either underserved or not met at all.

  • There is a need for a large assortment of sizes to compliment the various body shapes and sizes of the ethnic community. This is a size segment that is missing throughout the larger western wear apparel retailers in the city.
  • There is a need for a focus  and attention to customer’s personal preferences and customer retention will be given high priority. Because of the high rate of employee turnover at major mass retailers, customer service and personal detail has been  lost.

Our Solution

Mahogany Western Wear is a new apparel store that caters to the African-American cowboy community in Houston, Texas. As our name suggests our focus is to provide western wear apparel and accessories, and position ourselves as the top retail store servicing this particular market.

We are the first and only African-American owned western apparel store in the city of Houston. Our intentions are to obtain 80% market share and become a central hub of shopping activity for the local African-American cowboy population as well others who enjoy wearing western apparel.

Target Market

Market size & segments.

Market Description

The primary target customer of Mahogany Western Wear will be the African-American cowboys located in the southern part of Houston, TX.  As we are situated in the epicenter of their residential community we believe they will make up the largest percentage of our customer base.

The secondary target customers are the Hispanic community in the area. As the Hispanic population continues to grow rapidly in the south central area we expect to receive the patronage of Hispanics as they are very loyal to western apparel.

The last target customer of Mahogany is listed as other. As popularity about the store increases we expect to see an assortment of curiosity seekers, and local residents from the community as well as seasonal purchasers during rodeo season.

Market Segmentation

We have three particular market segments that we plan on catering to:

First, the  growing number of African-American cowboy population is concentrated heavily in the southwestern part of the city therefore leading to the highest concentration of our customer base.

Second, the growing  number Hispanic community, which is a growing population in the community in which the store is located, has statistically shown to be loyal to the major western brands such as Wrangler.

Last, the potential customers is labeled as "other." Because Mahogany Western Wear offers a variety of western and southwestern wear apparel, along with accessories and gifts we feel that we will attract many curious shoppers. Our ambience and customer service will make them repeat customers.

Target Market Segment Strategy

The goal of Mahogany Western Wear is to serve the local African-American cowboy community that have difficulty finding western clothes that fit their larger frames. We will also serve the Hispanic community which tends to have a slimmer yet shorter frame.

Both of these markets are underserved in the major western retailer outlets.

Market Needs

There are several important needs in the western wear apparel business that are being either underserved or not met at all. Mahogany Western Wear plans to meet and service those needs.

  • Mahogany will provide a large assortment of sizes to compliment the various body shapes and sizes of the ethnic community. This is a size segment that is missing throughout the larger western wear apparel retailers in the city.
  • Focus and attention to customer’s personal preferences and customer retention will be given high priority. Because of the high rate of employee turnover at major mass retailers, customer service and personal detail has been  lost.

Market Trends

Millions of people around the world instantly recognize and identify with western apparel. It is synonymous with America and is a true classic.

Western wear has survived many eras. Modern cowboys herd cattle in helicopters but they still wear the same jeans, boots and hats their grandfathers wore. There will always be a future for western apparel. Within the last two years the southwestern and western look has made a comeback in the fashion industry. Mahogany Western Wear intends to use its place in the community to heighten the awareness of the African-American cowboy culture in Houston, TX.

With the increase of participation by professional African-American cowboys such as five-time World Champion professional calf roper Fred Whitfield from Houston, TX more people are becoming aware of African-Americans role and contribution in the cowboy community.

Market Growth

Market growth is in an upward motion, despite some of the latest economic downturns in the Houston metro area. According to a report by the City of Houston Economy & Trade, Houston ranked second in the rate of job growth among the nation’s 10 largest cities during 2000. Although for the time being, Houston will mirror much of the national economy, by the second half of 2002 Houston will again see positive growth as the city is predicted to add another 15,000 jobs. In the 12 months ending in January 2002, the city posted a net gain of 7,500 jobs while the nation as a whole lost 1.2 million. It is important to note that 90% of the new jobs are in the non-energy dependent sectors thereby adding to the city’s economy and economic diversity.

Houston has also been designated as the best city in the U.S. to start a new business. For three consecutive years, Houston has ranked first in the nation in new business growth, according to American Business Information. The most recent survey shows that more than 31,000 new local businesses were started in Houston. Los Angeles, California was a distant second with 16,780.

For these reasons and  more, Houston is considered an economic leader in America. Economy.com has analyzed America’s 40 largest metro areas and predicts Houston’s Gross Area Product will do better than any other city through the second quarter of 2002. Industry Week named Houston one of 12 world class cities for manufacturing and Black Enterprise has ranked Houston as the top U.S. city for blacks based on income potential, cost of living, proximity to employers, cost of housing and 21 quality-of-life factors.

Current Alternatives

There are three current alternatives to Mahogany Western Wear:

Cavender’s Boot City , which is located approximately 7.1 miles from our location is our closest competitor. Cavender’s is one of the largest western wear apparel stores in the state of Texas. They operate 42 stores and sell basic western wear apparel and boots to the general mass market. Because of Cavender’s size they have a large percentage of the market share but still only cater to what the apparel industry considers to be the average size. Locating plus size clothing for women and big and tall sizes for men can be extremely difficult. They also tend to be a bit behind the market in offering more contemporary western styles. Because of Cavender’s size they have also lost some of their customer service skills as employee turnover is high.

Barbecue Hall of Fame , located approximately 9.3 miles from our store. The Barbecue Hall of Fame retail outlet combines the atmosphere of Goode & Co. BBQ restaurant with shopping and a prime tourist attraction. They offer an eclectic mix of old west meets new west with apparel, grills, cookware, and gift items. BBQ Hall of Fame doesn’t do any advertising or promotions of their retail outlet so if you don’t visit The Goode & Co. restaurant you wouldn’t know about the retail establishment.

Turner Saddlery  is approximately 12.1 miles from Mahogany Western Wear and is the farthest of the three competitors. Turner Saddlery is a family-owned western apparel with two stores in the Houston area and one store in Conroe, TX. Their customer base tends to be more upscale as they carry more of the high end western labels such as Saddle Ridge and Lucchese. They also carry housewares and bedding items of which Cavender’s and BBQ Hall of Fame does not carry. They have few plus sizes for women and big and tall for men. Also, Turner Saddlery does very little advertising and promotion.

Our Advantages

Our key advantages that make us better than the competition are:

  • Carry an assortment of sizes to fit the more ample frames of their African-American target customer base.
  • Provide customers with top notch personalized customer service in an atmosphere of southern hospitality.
  • Advertise and promote in areas that our target customer base will learn about our store.
  • Continuously review our inventory and sales and adjust our inventory levels accordingly.

Keys To Success

In order to succeed in the western wear apparel industry Mahogany Western Wear must:

Marketing & Sales

Marketing plan.

With Social Media our marketing strategy will focus heavily on sales promotion, niche positioning in the market,  and customer service with loyalty and retention in sales.

  • The marketing budget will not exceed 5% of our gross annual sales.
  • Our promotions will always stay in tune with our company objectives and mission statement.

We plan on maintaining a flexible pricing strategy. We base the product lines that we carry on their reputation and quality as western wear apparel. Most of our lines come with a suggested retail price that we will follow.

We will also keep an up-to-date Facebook page and Twitter persona with regularly updated content. We will be slow to do promotions over social media, emphasizing useful content instead. Some of that will include community content.

Our retail location will be the foundation of building our customer base. We will also manage a direct mail program that will focus on our top 50% customers spotlighting any in-house sales and promotions.

We plan on implementing the following sales strategy:

  • We will utilize the Retail ICE POS software with every sales transaction. With each purchase the software will record and maintain in its database the customer’s name, address and purchases. This information will be used with our direct mailing program to focus on our top 50% of customers.
  • We will offer a 14 day return/exchange policy to build trust with our customers and maintain retention and loyalty.

Locations & Facilities

Mahogany Western Wear will be located at 13328 1/2 Almeda Rd., Houston, TX 77045. This space has 1,020 square feet and has been leased for two years. This location is central to the geographical location for the African-American cowboy community in the southern part of Houston, TX. We feel it is essential to our initial and ongoing success that we locate ourselves in the heartbeat of the community. We also strive to create an atmosphere of acceptance and community, as well as a retail environment where individuals can identify and bond with their culture.

All business deliveries and shipments will be handled through the store. The company office will also be housed at this location.

Milestones & Metrics

Milestones table, key metrics.

The Key Metrics that help us identify good performance:

Have sales keep track of our top 6 most popular items that bring in the most sales.  Buying inventory on credit will comprise no more than 20 to 25 percent of our overall cost of goods. We need to focus on keeping our most popular items always in our store.

We will engage customers on Facebook and Twitter. We will aim to have Social media only promotions comprise 5 percent of sales and 15 percent of inquiries. Our website will show how the traffic flows and we will make sure to engage and link to our partners.

Return customers should comprise 20 percent of sales rising to over 45 percent. We want our customers to come back for our sales and the new styles. We can keep track of that by customer loyalty programs, have them register in our system so their account comes up whenever they purchase.  We give them incentive to sign up by giving those who return specialized sales.

Ownership & Structure

Our store is a LLP. We have two founding partners, Chandra E. Miller and Derrick L. McCoy. Chandra E. Miller will handle all administrative and managerial duties while Derrick L. McCoy acts as a silent partner.

At the launch we will have one additional full time staffer who helps Chandra with customers who come in the  store. There will be a part time worker who will fill in on lunches or on particularly busy times. We will add one or possibly two positions later, as the need arises.

Management Team

Chandra E. Miller, co-owner and general manager will be responsible for all administrative functions, purchasing, inventory control, and promotions. She will also act as a part-time sales representative. She has spent over 10 years in accounting, finance and operations management. She was also the owner of Tattletale’s, an e-commerce toy store for three years. She has extensive background in purchasing, inventory control, and marketing.

Personnel Table

Financial plan investor-ready personnel plan .">, key assumptions.

The growth of Mahogany Western Wear will be moderate and the cash balance will always be positive. Being a retail environment we will not be selling on credit. We will accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards. TeleCheck Services will be used as the check guaranty system to help reduce the percentage of loss on bad checks. Marketing and advertising will remain at or below 5% of sales. We will continue to reinvest residual profits into company expansion, and personnel.

Revenue by Month

Expenses by month, net profit (or loss) by year, use of funds.

We anticipate $8,000 of pre-launch startup expenses including…

  • Pre-launch rent: $3K One month of prepaid rent
  • Pre-launch fixup: $2K. We will do most of the work ourselves
  • Prelaunch marketing expense: $2K. Includes branding, logo, social media, pre-launch marketing. We plan to do most of this ourselves.

We also need $70K pre-launch assets:

  • $18K cash on hand
  • $30K inventory
  • $2K other current assets
  • $20K furniture, shelves, signage, etc.

Total starting costs are $78K.

Sources of Funds

We will start with $35,000 of founder investment. We will have a $20,000 dollar line of credit from our bank. We plan on getting a $27,000 Accion loan to help with our startup.

Future fashion cities: Paris to overtake New York?

By Annachiara Biondi

Image may contain Plot

Paris is expected to overtake New York to become the number one city for relevance and potential in the global fashion industry by 2025, according to IFDAQ Global Cities Consumer IPX (Index). The likelihood is that London will rise to third place, surpassing Milan, the research says.

IFDAQ Global Cities Consumer IPX (Index), exclusive to Vogue Business , evaluates global cities according to four dynamic-weighted key factors, including general economy, fashion economic performance, market capitalisation and industry influence. These factors take into account infrastructure, GDP, brand presence, wealth, consumption power and creative power.

Paris is likely to reap the benefits of Brexit, including faster European Union integration and less competition from London, according to Frédéric Godart, co-CEO of IFDAQ and associate professor of organisational behaviour at INSEAD. “The competition with London was fierce, but now that London is out, Paris is going to be the de facto economic capital of the EU,” he says. New York is losing traction economically, partly because of the US-China trade war, says IFDAQ co-CEO Daryl de Jorí.

A further boost for Paris, defining it as the world centre of luxury, is the ever-increasing dominance of Paris-based conglomerates LVMH and Kering. Godart makes the comparison with Silicon Valley’s dominance of technology. “It's a classical capitalist concentration dynamic, a clustering effect.”

The French capital’s central role seems assured. “Paris has the allure, the glamour and is the home base for two huge influential fashion groups that anchors it,” says Julie Gilhart, industry veteran and chief development officer of Tomorrow Consulting. “In my fashion history I’ve seen Milan, London and New York going up and down. The only thing that remains pretty solid is Paris.”

How London Fashion Week began: An oral history

By Elektra Kotsoni

In 2019, the world’s 10 largest luxury companies, led by LVMH and Kering, increased their share of industry revenue , accounting for 51 per cent of all sales by the top 100 companies. The Covid-19 pandemic has since accelerated luxury polarisation, with high-performing companies weathering the storm while smaller players struggled. Analysts say these conditions provide fertile grounds for M&A , with market consolidation to the benefit of the biggest players. “Paris is still taking a lot of advantage from its last 20 years of mergers,” says de Jorí. Since 2000, LVMH and Kering between them have acquired or bought stakes in more than 10 leading luxury brands.

London versus Milan

The rise of London over Milan is a less straightforward story and might reflect a progressive weakening of Milan’s status rather than a strengthening of London’s role, says Godart. While both cities are facing economic uncertainties ranging from the impact of Brexit to the economic hit of the Covid-19 pandemic, London has a more dynamic economy. “For London, it’s much more of a temporary [challenging economic] state and we believe it will soon recover, while Milan never really recovered from the economic crisis of 2008,” says de Jorí. “The Italian economy is too weak to build more traction and interest from brands.”

By Christina Binkley

Image may contain: Human, Person, Plant, Hedge, and Fence

The Italian fashion industry and the country’s wealth are also distributed among different cities, including Florence, Venice and Rome, rather than concentrated in one place, as in London and in Paris. Godart says that the “concentration effect” is absolutely critical for the relevance of cities such as Paris, London, Tokyo and Moscow. Besides Italy, Spain, Germany and China are all examples of countries where power is shared between two or more cities.

David Gilbert, professor of urban and historical geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, who has researched the geographies of fashion, says London appears the most vulnerable of the four capitals because it derives its status not from the luxury brands based there but from its reputation as a source of edginess and innovation. “London, more than the others, depends on that churn of ideas. You can imagine another city doing the same things that London does in terms of creativity, innovation and avant-garde,” he says. Post-Brexit, rising prices and economic uncertainties could well squeeze independent designers out of the city.

The role of fashion weeks

In the IFDAQ Index, Paris, New York, London and Milan will maintain their dominance until at least 2030. But the Index predicts a gradual decrease in importance as other cities step up their influence — including Tokyo, Los Angeles, Shanghai and Moscow.

A key factor is the likely continuing global impact of the four cities’ fashion weeks, says Godart. These will endure despite current industry debates over the fashion calendar and the future of fashion weeks . “To some extent they will evolve: there will be more diversity and other fashion capitals, but you don’t change institutions in one year,” Godart says. He notes that the four fashion capitals retain the necessary infrastructure and organisational experience — as well as the luxury brands — to trigger the most interest on a global scale.

Image may contain Plot

Gilbert says that in the early 2000s it was commonly anticipated that the future fashion order would shift towards cities such as Shanghai, Mumbai or São Paulo. Instead, the traditional order has reasserted itself over the past 20 years. “Those fashion capitals are locked in symbolically in a way that almost becomes self-fulfilling,” he says. “As long as the global elite looks at those places as markets with elite status, that stays in place.”

Gilhart is wary of making long-term predictions, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic has led to industry reevaluation of the structure and meaning of fashion weeks. “Covid has made us rethink everything, including what is valid about fashion week and what it’s not,” she says,

She adds that cities that might seem less relevant now could become important again by developing new formats or launching new trends. Shanghai is well positioned to become a force thanks to an abundance of talent and creativity. Launched in 2001, Shanghai Fashion Week has steadily increased its relevance on the global fashion calendar, attracting international buyers with shows that mix new local talents and international brands eager to tap into the Chinese market. The showcase was the first to return as a largely physical event in October 2020 after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the international show calendar. “We will see a time when New York, London, Milan, Paris and Shanghai will be equally as relevant,” Gilhart predicts.

Moscow: City to watch

Moscow may be a significant city to watch. It is forecast to grow in importance for the fashion industry, surpassing Shanghai in 2026, according to the IFDAQ Global Cities Consumer IPX (Index). De Jorí says the core reasons why Shanghai will plateau in the Index include a decrease in Chinese consumer purchasing power as population growth slows as well as likely slower growth patterns both in salaries and in GDP.

The concentration of wealth and consumption in Moscow will boost its rise in prominence. In Russia, the capital city accounts for more than 70 per cent of luxury consumption, contrasting with China where luxury consumption and wealth are spread among many first-tier cities. Anna Lebsak-Kleimans, CEO of Fashion Consulting Group Russia, adds that luxury brands rarely open stores beyond three cities in Russia — Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Sochi.

European and American luxury brands dominate the Russian luxury sector. Moscow has hosted its own fashion week, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia, since 2000, but local fashion businesses remain small and mostly focused on the local market, says Lebsak-Kleimans. But she notes that segments of the local fashion market, such as modest wear and eco-friendly underwear, have developed fast in the last six years, boosted by direct-to-consumer e-commerce and more government support for local industries after US sanctions imposed in 2014.
