Business Environment

The business environment is the collection of factors like employees, clients, supply and demand, management, clients, suppliers, investors, and a lot more. Business Environment affects the working of a company.

The business environment helps to identify the goals, planning, execution, and internal working of a company. The business environment is an integral part of any organization.

What is Business Environment?

Various forms of organization are available in a business environment. They are Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Co-Operative Societies, Statutory Bodies, and Corporations.

Each form has a different company base, brand value, including the other properties. Sole Proprietorship companies are those where the company is owned by a sole person/family.

In partnership firms, two or more partners equally share the responsibilities of the company. They also have equal shares in the profit earned. Corporations are the ones where a huge number of employees work and have branches all over the region.

Business Environment- Definition

The phrase “ business environment ” refers to the whole of all individuals, groups, and other entities that operate independently of the industry but have the potential to influence its output. “Like the universe, withhold from it the subset that represents the system and the rest is environment,” wrote an unknown author. Therefore, an enterprise’s environment includes the financial, cultural, governmental, technological, and other elements that operate outside of it. The environment of an enterprise is made up of the specific clients or competing businesses, as well as the management, clientele, rivals, media, legal systems, and other organizations operating outside.

Business Environment Project Features

  • Complexity: The business world is complex, making it simple to comprehend certain aspects independently but challenging to comprehend all at once.
  • Relativity: The impact of the business climate varies from nation to nation, area to region, and company to company. For instance, juice producers would appreciate a movement in consumer preference from soft drinks to juices, whereas soft drink producers would see it as a threat.
  • The totality of external forces: A business firm’s environment is made up of all the forces and causes that are external to it.
  • Specific and general forces: Both specific and general forces are present in the business environment. Investors, rivals, consumers, and other specific forces have an impact on a business firm directly. In contrast, general forces, including social, political, economic, legal, and technological conditions, have an impact on a business firm indirectly.
  • Inter-relatedness: All dynamics and elements that affect a business environment are interconnected. For instance, growing interest in health care has increased demand for roasted snacks and organic food.
  • Dynamic: The nature of the business environment is always changing due to advancements in technology, shifts in consumer preferences, and other factors.

Business Environment Project Dimensions

Economic environment.

It alludes to the factors that influence business operations economically. Business is a recognized example of an economic organization. Its expansion and existence are therefore reliant on economic reasons. Numerous factors, including inflation, interest rates, price levels, the amount of money on the market, and others, are part of the economic environment. These elements can either present a business with an opportunity or a threat. As a result, management constantly works to seize chances and turn dangers into advantages.

Social Environment

A business’s social environment consists of long-standing traditions, cultures, and conventions. Any change in the social environment will have an impact on the availability of labor, capital, and consumer demand for a given good.

Technological Environment

The broad aspects of science and technology in which a business enterprise operates are referred to as the technological environment of a business. It contains forces related to innovation and technological advancement, which creates a newer foundation for manufacturing goods and services, as well as efficient company management processes and practices.

Political Environment

The broad characteristics of the political system in which a business enterprise operates are referred to as the political environment. These characteristics include political conditions like general peace and stability in the nation as well as particular attitudes that the elected government representatives have towards the business enterprise. These factors have a big impact on how the firm operates on a daily basis. Businessmen have more faith in political parties because they operate within the constraints of the political environment when there is political stability.

Legal Environment

It refers to the fundamental elements of the legislative framework under which a corporate firm operates, including the many laws the government introduces and passes in the parliament or state legislature. Additionally, administrative directives from courts and government agencies, as well as decisions based on committee recommendations, are involved.

Business Environment and Types

There are multiple factors by which we can decide the type of business organization. The factors include the brand value, size of the organization, quality of the work done by the company, etc. A business can be classified according to small-sized, medium-sized, and large organizations.

Relativity in the Business Environment

An ideal business environment is the one through which the company flourishes and the employee’s productivity is maximized. It can be achieved by taking proper measures that can help to establish the communication between the employees and the management of a company.

Regular checks can also be done to ensure whether the environment is safe and sound for the employees or not. The client’s feedback also can be taken to improve the business environment.

There should also be regular interactions between the people of higher positions in the company and the regular employees. This can help to spread the motive of the company. This will help the employees to have a specific target along with a valid reason to work in the organization.

Business Environment is required for a company for the following reasons.

  • Helps to plan the investment accordingly.
  • Helps to strategize plans and opportunities.
  • Helps to identify estimated loss that might occur if corrective measures are not taken in time.
  • Helps to manage resources.
  • Helps to measure the productivity of an employee in a company.
  • Helps to establish intercommunications between the different teams of a company.

These are the reasons why a business environment is helpful.

Business Environment and Its Affecting Factors

External factors.

A socio-economic entity is a business. As a result, society’s numerous facets are fundamental to the success or failure of every organization as well as to the environment it operates in. PESTLE is a phrase frequently used to describe elements in the external business environment. Political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors are all represented by this acronym.

  • Political Factors

Every component of politics has an impact on a business, from the geographic political climate to the international relations it maintains. While some nations have business-friendly legislation, others have business-restrictive laws. The state of local politics and how it interacts with other nations have a significant impact on the state of business.

  • Technical Aspects

One of the main forces in today’s world is technology. Businesses that are unable to keep up with the current technological advancement are finding it difficult to survive. And companies that are utilizing technology to their advantage are outpacing their rivals. Over the past few decades, IT has established itself as a major industry.

  • Economic variables

The majority of nations currently experience extremely unstable economies. And this applies to all businesses, big and small. The existence of the open market has, nevertheless, also proven very advantageous for enterprises. The majority of big companies must constantly be mindful of their influence due to the volatility of the global economy.

Internal Factors

An organization in the business is defined by the forces that exist inside it. These include the managerial style, the level of machinery utilized, and the work environment. The main internal elements that influence the business environment are listed below.

  • Human Resources

A relatively recent idea that has taken over the business world is human resources. Human resources are responsible for managing personnel on a micro level while firms get bigger every day. As a result, it is crucial to establish the business environment.

  • Physical Resources

Every business needs resources to function, and how these resources are managed has a significant impact on the environment inside the company.

Enterprise Path

Every business has a reason for being and a goal to accomplish. The business path is made up of these two elements and how the company envisions itself in the future. These lay out the adjustments that will be made to the corporate structure.

One of the key components of the internal business environment is the hierarchical or non-hierarchical structure of the company that establishes the roles of each employee and management. Different corporate structures exist, including matrix, bureaucratic, and functional ones.

The business environment is an important part of commerce subjects . It refers to forces and institutions outside the firm with which its members must deal to achieve the organisational purposes where forces are referred to as economical forces, social forces, political forces, technological forces etc and institutions are referred to as suppliers, customers, competitors and etc.

According to the chapter of Business Environment class 12, these are the following features of a business environment:

  • Totality of external forces: business environment is regarded as the sum total of all the forces or factors external to a business firm.
  • Specific and general forces: business environment also includes both specific and general focus where specific forces are like investors, customers, who affect the business directly. On the other hand, general forces are the social, political, legal and technological conditions.
  • Inter relatedness: according to the chapter of Business Environment class 12, all the forces and factors that affect the business are interrelated.
  • Dynamic Nature: it is said that the business environment is dynamic in nature as it keeps on changing and never remains constant.
  • Uncertainty: we have always referred to this point that uncertainty is always attached to any business. Likewise, the business environment is uncertain too and hence it is difficult to predict.
  • Complexity: apart from being uncertain, the business environment is difficult to understand and analyse and hence it is complex in nature. It can be easily understood in parts but in totality, it is difficult to understand.

As per the syllabus of Business Environment Class 12, the importance of the business environment can be observed with the help of the following points:

  • Identification of opportunities to get a first-mover advantage: the very first importance of business environment enables us to understand the business environment which in return will help in identifying advantageous opportunities and getting their benefits prior to competitors, thus getting a first-mover advantage before our competitors.
  • Identification of threats: environmental awareness and understanding of the business environment will help the firm to identify various threats on time which will serve as an early warning signal.
  • Tapping useful resources: there are many resources which are present in a business environment such as capital, labour, machines, raw materials, etc. in order to know the availability of these resources and in order to make them available on time at the correct economical price, the knowledge of the business environment is required and necessary.
  • Coping with rapid changes: the continuous and rapid study or scanning of the business environment will help in knowing the changes that are taking place in the business environment so that the business is ready in advance to face them effectively.
  • Assistance in planning and policy formulation:  understanding the business environment also helps in assisting managers in planning and policy formulation as per the future course of action.
  • Helps in improving performance: a better understanding of the business environment and its continuous study and scanning help businesses and companies to easily monitor and improve their performance.

This is another component or dimension of the business environment which includes and consists of various social factors or forces like customs, beliefs, literacy rate, education, lifestyle, traditions, ethics, values and etc. it also includes the society as a whole in which the business is existing. Changes in the social environment may or can affect an organization in the long run.

The technical or technological environment is that component or dimension of the business environment which closely deals with the continuous changes that are taking place in the techniques, ways or the methods of production. It is important to closely monitor the technical changes that are taking place in the industry which helps the business to improve the quality of its products and competition from others. The legal environment is the last dimension or a component of business environment class 12 which constitutes all the laws and various other legislations that are passed in the parliament, such as Trade Mark Act, GST Bill, Weights and Measures Act and more.

In economics class 12, students must have studied in detail the economic reforms that India has to adopt after 1991. The government implemented LPG, which is also known as liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation, which was an attempt to expand and open up our economy and integrate it with the world economy, hoping that it will help the Indian economy to be out of the difficulties and speeding up the development of the country. Hence the main features of the New Economic Policies (NEP) of 1991 were as follows:

  • Only six industries were kept on a permit/license permit or regime.
  • The role of the public sector has been limited to no more than four industries.
  • The divestment took place in numerous public sector companies.
  • Foreign capital/investment policy has been liberalized and in many areas foreign direct investment has been 100% permitted.
  • Technology agreements with foreign companies were automatically allowed to be signed.
  • The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) was founded to promote and attract foreign investment into India.
  • A variety of advantages have been offered to small scale industries.

As discussed above also, the Indian Government adopted three main strategies namely Liberalisation, Privatisation and Globalisation popularly came to be known as LPG for the purpose of economic development since 1991.

  • Liberalisation : as per this policy, the government decided to remove all the unwanted restrictions and barriers in the international trade which made the business environment and economy more liberal, competitive and free.
  • Privatisation : as per this policy or strategy that was adopted by the government, it removed strict control and restrictions on the private sector and allowed the private sector of the economy to flourish in the economy. It gave the required and much-needed freedom to the private sector of the economy.
  • Globalisation : according to this strategy or policy which was adopted by the government, it allowed integration of the world or global economy with the national economy and also free interaction among economies of the world in the field of trade, finance, production, technology, investments, education etc. Our new economic policy has helped globalization through:
  • Devaluation of rupee
  • Raising foreign equity participation
  • Long-period trade policy
  • Convertibility of rupee

Let us now take this blog on Business Environment class 12 study notes further while discussing the major impacts of the government policy changes on the business and industry:

  • Increase in competition
  • The demand of the customers increased and more demanding customers started gathering in the market
  • Need for world-class and modern technology
  • Need or necessity for change and modifications
  • Market orientation
  • Need for developing and training human resource
  •  Loss of Budgetary Support to Public Sectors

Meaning of Business Environment

Business environment refers to all the factors that are outside the control of the business enterprise but may equally affect the performance of the business. The social, political, economic, technological factors that operate outside a business forms a part of the business environment.

Features of Business Environment

Totality of External Forces: Includes every external or outside force that could impact a business organisation such as government, competitors, etc.

Specific and General Forces: Particular factors are those that have a direct impact on a single corporate organisation. General forces are those that have a direct impact on the broader industry yet have an indirect impact on a firm.

Inter-Relatedness: Changes in general forces may have an impact on particular forces. A change in government (a political power, for example) may result in a change in tax rates or import-export rates (an economic force)

Dynamic Nature: The external forces keep changing due to constant change in technology, consumer preferences, availability of different types of raw material etc.

Uncertainty: Constant changes in environment makes it difficult to predict changes in the external environment.

Complexity: The interrelated and dynamic nature of external forces makes it difficult to prepare one single strategy to handle all the changes.

Relativity: The impact of changes depends on business to business country to country region to region etc.

Importance of Business Environment

Identification of Opportunities : It enables the firm to identify opportunities and get the first mover advantage. The positive external changes provide opportunities to a business organisation to improve its performance.

Identifying Threat: It helps the firm to identify threats and provide early warning signals. Adverse changes in the external factors act as ‘threats’ to the business which hinders performance. Early identification of threats helps managers to make strategies to convert threats into opportunities.

Tapping Useful Resources: Business utilizes the resources of the external environment as inputs like finance, labour etc., and supplies its output to the environment in the form of goods and services, taxes, etc.

Coping with Rapid Changes: The business environment is extremely dynamic so the managers need to develop strategies not only to cope with the changes but also to use them as their strengths to improve their market shares.

Planning and Policy Formulation: Clear understanding and analysis of the business environment help businesses to formulate its future plans and strategies to cope with all the external changes.

Improves Performance: The continuous monitoring of the business environment and changing business practices from traditional methods help business in improving their present performance and also continue to retain its market position in the long run.

Dimensions in Business Environment

Economic Environment: It refers to all those factors and forces that have an economic impact on the business activities. Key economic factors include inflation, money supply, price level, etc. For example, increase in inflation rates result in fall in disposable incomes and as a result the demand for products falls.

Social Environment: The social environment represents the society's conventions and traditions, values, culture, social trends, beliefs, and ethics in which businesses operate. Businesses, for example, are increasingly worried about the quality of things they offer as consumers become more conscious of their rights.

Political Environment: It includes political stability such as political leadership, political stability, practices of the ruling party, etc. For example, change in government, or unstable government.

Legal Environment: It includes all the legislations passed, administrative orders issued, court judgements or decisions taken by government or its related offices. For example, all cigarette packets must carry a warning ‘smoking is injurious to health’.

Technological Environment: It consists of forces relating to scientific improvements and innovations, which lead to better production techniques and methods to produce goods. For example, shift from books to e-books, telephones to touch screen mobile phones.

Economic Environment In India

The Indian economic environment consists of various factors that impact the means of production and distribution of wealth.

Some of the factors are:

Economic development stages of the country.

The economic structure of the country; Mixed economy structure.

Economic policies such as fiscal and monetary policies of the government.

Government’s economic planning for the country in terms of five year plans etc.

Economic indices of the country such as growth rate, national income, balance of payment, savings and investment rate etc.

Infrastructural facilities of the country such as health, communication, transportation etc.

Objectives of India's Development Plans

To raise the standard of living by reducing unemployment and poverty.

To set up a strong industrial base with emphasis on heavy and basic industries.

Self-Reliance.

Reduction in wealth and income inequalities.

Prevent exploitation and adopt a socialist pattern of development.

New Industrial Policy 1991

Due to economic problems like high government deficit, foreign exchange crisis and rising prices, the Government of India developed the new industrial policy with an aim to overcome the economic problems.

Industries under compulsory licensing were brought down to six by the government.

Dereservation of industries was done and the role of the public sector was limited only to four industries.

Disinvestment was carried out for many public sector industries.

Foreign capital policy was liberalised.

FDI upto 100% was permitted for many sectors.

Automatic grants were given for technology agreements with foreign countries.

Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) was set up to promote foreign investment in India.

Liberalisation

It is a reform which was introduced to remove unnecessary controls, licensing and government restrictions in an economy. This marked the end of license raj in India.

The main objectives of introducing liberalisation were:

To restrict licensing requirements to only a few core industries.

To remove all restrictions related to scale of operation expansion or contraction of business activities.

To remove restrictions on the movement of goods and services.

To provide freedom to fix prices.

To reduce tax rates and remove unnecessary control.

Twinkle import of foreign capital and technology.

To simplify the procedures of import and export.

Privatisation

It refers to the transfer of development responsibilities from the state to the private sector. Private sector enterprises are those in which the government owns less than 51 percent of the company.

 Objectives:

To introduce plant disinvestment of the public sector.

Dilute the ownership stake in public sector companies to less than 51%.

Establishment of the Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction to evaluate the loss making and sick enterprises.

Disinvestment, that means to transfer the ownership from the public sector to the private sector.

Globalisation

Globalisation entails making it possible for the world's diverse economies to participate in the creation of a global economy. This was done to facilitate the free movement of imports and exports around the world.

Globalisation promoted fast technological progress since geographical barriers were no longer an impediment.

Demonetization

The term demonetisation means to invalidate all the currency notes of a particular denomination by the government of a country.

The Indian Government demonetised the two largest denomination notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 on 8th November, 2016.

The aim of this move was to curb corruption and illegal activities and stop hoarding of black money.

Features of Demonetisation

After demonetisation, cash is deposited into banks for exchanging with new notes which makes the payment of tax compulsory with penalty rate.

Government introduced demonetisation to reduce tax evasion.

Demonetisation reduces the cash transactions in the economy which means more savings through the financial system and improving tax payment system.

Demonetisation facilitates tax administration, and pave way for a cashless economy

Impact of Demonetisation

Impact of Government Policy Changes on Business and Industry

The LPG reforms brought about a significant impact on Indian business and industry. The challenges are:

Increased competition: Increase in the number of Indian firms and entry of foreign companies increased competition especially in the service industry.

More demanding customers: Increase in the number of enterprises gives consumers wider choice of products leading to rise in expectations and demands.

Rapidly changing technological environment: Fast changing technology requires companies to install the latest machinery, adopt latest techniques of production leading to an increase in investments in the business.

Necessity for change: With change in government policies business had to modify their policies and practices, invest in research and development, innovation etc.

Economic Environment in India

As a part of economic reforms, the Government of India announced New Economic Policy in July 1991 for taking out the country out of economic difficulty and speeding up the development of the country.

Main features of NEP, 1991 are as follows:

1. Only six industries were kept under licensing scheme.

2 . The role of public sector was limited only to four industries.

3. Disinvestment was carried out in many public sector enterprises.

4. Foreign capital/investment policy was liberalized and in many sectors100% direct foreign investment was allowed.

5. Automatic permission was given for signing technology agreements with foreign companies.

6. Foreign investment promotion board (FIPB) was setup to promote & bring foreign investment in India.

7. Various benefits were offered to small scale industries.

The three main strategies adopted for the above may be defined as follows:

1. Globalisation: • Integrating the economy of a country with the economies of other countries to facilitate freer flow of trade, capital, persons and technology across borders. It leads to the emergence of a cohesive global economy. • Till 1991, the Government of India had followed a policy of strictly regulating imports in value and volume terms. These regulations were with respect to (a) licensing of imports, (b) tariff restrictions and (c) quantitative restrictions. • NEP ‘91 advocated rapid advancement in technology and directed trade liberalization towards:

a. Import Liberalisation

b. Export promotion towards rationalization of the tariff structure and

c. Reforms w.r.t foreign exchange 2. Liberalisation: = Liberalising the Indian business and industry from all unnecessary controls and restrictions. That is relaxing rules and regulations which restrict the growth of the private sector and allowing the private sector to take part in economic activities that were earlier reserved for the government sector. The steps taken for this were: a. Abolishing licensing b. Freedom in deciding the scale of operations c. Removal of restrictions on movement of goods and services. d. Freedom in fixing prices. e. Reduction in tax rates and unnecessary controls f. Simplifying procedures for import and exports g. Making it easy to attract foreign capital.

3. Privatization:

• Refers to the reduction of the role of the public sector in the economy of a country.

• Transfer of ownership and control from the private to the public sector (disinvestment) can be done by : a. Sale of all/some asses of the public sector enterprises. b. Leasing of public enterprises to the private sector. c. Transfer of management of the public enterprise to the private sector. • To achieve privatization in India, the government redefined the role of the public sector and –

a. Adopted a policy of planned disinvestment of the public sector

b. Refer the loss making and sick units to the Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR)

Long Answer Questions NCERT Business Studies Solutions Class 12 Chapter 3

1. How would you characterise business environment? Explain, with examples, the difference between general and specific environment.

The sum of all the forces (external, institutions and individuals) that are outside the control of a business organisation is referred to as the business environment. The forces mentioned here can be of varied nature, such as social, economic, political, legal or technological. The organisation is unable to control such types of forces, but it can definitely have a positive or negative impact on their performance.

The following are the characteristics of the business environment:

1. Business environment is the sum total of all external forces, which includes individuals, government, and consumers. These have an impact on the business performance that is either positive or negative.

2. The different forces that have an impact on the business environment are interrelated. This interrelation has an effect on the business environment. For e.g., if there is an increase in the annual income of the consumers, they are more likely to purchase goods that fulfil all their demands, and this leads to an increase in demand for electric appliances, mobile phones, gadgets etc.

3. Business environment is constantly evolving and therefore is dynamic in nature. This can be explained as we see changing trends in consumer behaviour, technology and policies of the government.

4. The business environment is an uncertain territory. The changes in the market dynamics cannot be predicted easily. Due to this, there exists uncertainty.

5. Business environment is the sum total of all interrelated dynamic forces. Hence, it is somewhat complex and difficult to understand. All the factors like social, political, technological, etc., have an effect on the performance of the organisation. It can be easy to ascertain the individual impact of all the forces; it can be difficult to determine their cumulative effect.

6. Business environment varies with each region and hence is relative. The reason behind the variation in the business environment is that the forces that determine the nature of the business environment are dynamic in nature and therefore change as per region.

Specific environment is said to be the external forces that play a role in functioning of an organisation directly. These forces are specific to a particular organisation or an enterprise. Specific environment is unique to a industry and has an impact on how the day to day business is run. For example, change in price of a raw material required for production will result in less demand and abundant supply of raw materials has a direct impact on the production of the company.

General Environment comprises of all the forces that has an impact on all organisations irrespective of the type of industry. These forces do not differentiate between the industries or types of business. They have a cumulative effect on the organisation’s performance. For example, a new technology for communication will have a impact on the quality and quantity of production or if there is a change in government then it will have an effect on all organisations.

2. How would you argue that success of a business is significantly influenced by its environment?

Any organisation is unable to function on its own. It is influenced by various political, legal, social, and technological forces. These forces form the business environment of an organisation. It is essential that an organisation has a good understanding of its business environment. It enables an organisation to identify those that help or those that obstruct the growth of organisation. Knowing them well will help in reacting better to these forces.

The success of a business is influenced by its environment in the following ways:

1. Whenever there is a change in the business environment, it provides the opportunity to start fresh. Careful observation of the business environment is helpful in identifying these opportunities. It also gives the first movers an advantage in the business. Organisations can reap the maximum benefit in comparison to their competitors.

2. Studying of business environment helps in identifying threats to the business. It helps take preventive measures in order to counter those negative forces.

3. Environment provides sources or inputs such as machinery, raw materials, labour, etc., which are essential for an organisation. Therefore, it makes sense for organisations to choose those resources from the environment and convert them into desired products.

4. Business environment is dynamic in nature. There is a constant change in the factors that make up the business environment. Having a good understanding of the business environment helps cope with the factors better and helps organisations derive benefits from them.

5. Various threats and opportunities are discovered during the analysis of the business environment. The business can thus formulate plans and policies that will be appropriate for the market in the existing scenario.

6. Knowing about the threats and opportunities helps one improve their performance by adapting to these changes in a more informed manner. Being prepared for the situation helps in providing the best performance.

3. Explain with examples, the various dimensions of the business environment.

The business environment has the following dimensions:

1. Economic: The economic dimension consists of economic variables such as income, stock markets, and interest rates that are directly related to the functioning of business enterprises. For example, if there is an increase in purchasing power of consumers, it automatically leads to an increase in demand for goods and services, whereas if purchasing power is low, there is a decrease in demand.

2. Social: The social dimension comprises various traditions, trends, social values, and cultures. For example, companies can use religious festivals to produce items that cater to the occasion.

3. Technological: This dimension comprises all the technological changes and improvements that are happening in the business. There can be many examples, like the introduction of computers which changed the way information was gathered to the more recent developments in mobile phones and the internet. Businesses not updating themselves in the technology field can find themselves in a spot of bother with competitors.

4. Legal: This dimension consists of the various legal rules and legislations that are passed by the government. Non-compliance can lead to legal trouble for the business. For example, the setting up of a company is governed by the Companies Act, and not acting according to the law will result in the company facing legal hassles.

5. Political: Political dimension consists of peace, law and order, and stability. If there is a change in the government, there will be a change in the rules and policies. Frequent changes in administration can result in a loss of interest of investors. Also, relaxing rules can encourage investment. Such an example is of forming of a new policy in 1991 that opened the Indian economy to the world.

4. The government of India announced Demonetization of ₹ 500 and ₹ 1,000 currency notes with effect from the midnight of November 8, 2016. As a result, the existing ₹ 500 and ₹ 1,000 currency notes ceased to be legal tender from that date. New currency notes of the denomination of ₹ 500 and ₹ 2,000 were issued by Reserve Bank of India after the announcement.

The step resulted in a substantial increase in the awareness about and use of Point of Sale machines, e-wallets, digital cash and other modes of cashless transactions. Also, increased transparency in monetary transactions and disclosure led to a rise in government revenue in the form of tax collection.

a. Enumerate the dimensions of business environment highlighted above.

b. State the features of Demonetization.

a. The following dimensions of the business environment are seen to be highlighted here:

1. Political: The government announced the demonetisation of the ₹ 500 and ₹ 1,000 currency notes with effect from midnight of November 8, 2016. It is a step by the government to curb the illegal use of money by some entities.

2. Legal: 500 and ₹ 1,000 currency notes stopped being the legal tender, and ₹ 500 and ₹ 2,000 became the new legal tender.

3. Technological: As demonetisation happened, there was a shortage of cash, which encouraged the use of digital forms of payment in the form of e-wallets like Paytm and other modes of cashless transactions.

The following are the features of demonetization:

1. Demonetization was done with the intention of exposing black money holders and those who evade tax.

2. Increase in savings of people. Earlier more people used to keep money at home rather than at the bank, and this step resulted in savings in the bank.

3. It helped in reducing the interest rates in banks.

4. To popularize the use of digital payments and reduce fraud.

5. What economic changes were initiated by the government under the Industrial Policy, 1991? What impact have these changes made on the business and industry?

The Industrial policy was introduced in 1991. The following are the major highlights of the policy:

1. As per the new Industrial policy of 1991, the system of licensing was abolished. This helped the private players in starting a new venture without the need to obtain a license. Some industries were not exempt, such as those involved in the manufacture of cigarettes, liquor, defence equipment, pharmaceuticals and dangerous chemicals.

2. There was a considerable reduction in the number of industries that were marked for the public sector. The private sector was given the liberty to operate across industries. The government chose to keep only selected industries under direct control, which were atomic energy, railways and atomic minerals.

3. Before the new policy was introduced, companies needed to seek permission from the government to expand production. The new policy relaxed these norms for companies which were having an asset base of 100 crores. These companies can increase production as per the market requirements.

4. The new policy allowed the industrialists to import capital goods from foreign countries and even allowed 100% of FDI in such cases.

5. There was a reform in the definition of small-scale industries. The maximum limit of investment was increased from 5 lakhs to 1 crore. This step helped the industries to develop and contribute more to the GDP of the nation. Industries became more modern with new technologies that made work easier for small-scale industries.

6. This policy also introduced the disinvestment concept, which allowed the government to sell some stakes to the private sector in order to bring development and monetary benefits to the public sector industries.

7. A board was set up to encourage foreign investment in India. It was called Foreign Investment Promotion Board.

The following were the impact of these changes in business and industry:

2. Due to the increase in competition, consumers are flooded with choices for goods and services. This led to an increase in consumers’ demand for better-quality goods and services.

4. With increasing competition, firms need to reach customers with products and hence they adopt more innovative ways to promote their products by using updated technology.

6. What are the essential features of

i. Liberalisation

ii. Privatisation

iii. Globalisation

Liberalisation is the process or means of the elimination of the control of the state over economic activities. It provides greater autonomy to business enterprises in decision-making and eliminates government interference.

The purpose of liberalisation is to increase competition between enterprises. It also encourages foreign trade between countries. It also helps the business expand its global footprint. The opening up of the economy improves the economic development of a nation through the inflow of funds from foreign resources.

Essential features of liberalisation are:

1. Liberalisation brought about the abolition of licensing policies. Only a handful of industries were retained, such as those involved in the manufacture of cigarettes, liquor, defence equipment, pharmaceuticals and dangerous chemicals.

2. Businesses can decide on the number of goods they want to produce as per market conditions. This is applicable for those companies which have an asset base of 100 crores.

3. Liberalisation helped in the removal of various trade restrictions, tariffs, and duties which helped in the easy movement of goods and services.

4. Liberalisation helped encourage foreign direct investment and increased the competition attracting foreign service providers.

It reduces the workload on public enterprises and also paves the way for economic development by encouraging foreign direct investment (FDI).

The essential features of privatisation are:

1. Government adopted two different methods for disinvestment. In this, the first method was selling a part of the equity in one of the PSUs and the second process was strategic selling of PSUs. With these methods, many of the firms were sold off. This includes major companies like Maruti Udyog, BALCO etc.

2. A board was established that was specially entrusted with the revival of companies that were sick or loss-making. It was known as the Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction.

3. In privatisation, the role of the public sector was reduced substantially, with only 8 companies under government control. In the present condition, only 3 industries are under government control, and these are atomic energy, railways and atomic minerals.

4. To improve efficiency among public sector companies and increase the level of professionalism, the government decided to honour the title of Navaratna to all the 9 high-performing PSUs (Public Sector Units).

Globalisation can be understood as the integration of the national economy with the world economy. It represents a free flow of information, technology, goods and services, ideas, capital, and even people as a form of resources across different countries. Globalisation helps in improving cross-border connectivity between different markets in the form of investments, trade, and cultural exchanges.

The following are the essential features of globalisation:

1. It removed or reduced all the trade barriers such as tariffs, trade restrictions, customs duties, etc., which resulted in more business to and from India.

2. Export and Import duties were reduced, which helped in promoting free trade between India and the world.

3. The aim of globalisation was to encourage the setting up of foreign capital in the form of FDI (Foreign Direct Investment). It also resulted in the formation of SEZs (Special Economic Zones) and the creation of FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act).
