Work abroad opportunities nowadays are vast, but you will have to research and prepare more than if you were just applying for a job in your home country.

Be aware that if you do not already have permission to work in your desired country, getting a company abroad to sponsor your work visa can be very challenging. If you would like to know all the work options you have in Europe check out our visa guide I’m Outta Here! An American’s Ultimate Visa Guide to Living in Europe .

15 Easy Ways to Work Abroad in 2021

1. teach english.

This is one of the easiest ways to work abroad and get your foot in the door of the country you wish to live in. There are thousands of opportunities around the world to teach English abroad and numerous companies that can help you get jobs within this market. One important factor, although in some countries it is not a requirement, is to get a TEFL certification. Getting certified to teach English as a foreign language will give you a leg up on the competition and could potentially increase your salary, depending on several factors. There are also programs for teaching English that require no teaching experience or certification, only a Bachelor’s degree in any field.

If you wish to teach in Spain, there are several programs that provide the opportunity to live and work in Spain! One of the most popular programs is the Auxilares de Conversación (aka: North American Language and Cultural Assistant). Working as a language assistant is the best (and arguably, the easiest) way to get your foot in the door when coming to Spain. This kind of job gives you a reasonable stipend and the opportunity to teach and explore Spain. For more details about the program visit our Teaching English in Spain post!

If you are looking for ease, t eaching English is one of the easiest ways to live/work abroad. Unsure about where exactly to start or don’t know if teaching English is for you? Check out our Starter Guide to Teaching English Abroad .

2. Study a language abroad

For many U.S. citizens, one of the easiest ways to initially go abroad to the country of your choice, is to study. This can include enrolling at an accredited university to pursue a degree or studying a language at a language academy. Enrolling in a language academy for a year will satisfy a long-term student visa requirement and, depending on the country, will often allow for part-time employment (20 hours a week). Your part-time job options will be limited if you do not speak the local language, but if your country of destination is a non-native English speaking country, chances are positions as a private English teacher will be heavily in demand.

3. Become an Au Pair

If you love working with young kids, this one’s for you! Many countries seek au pairs, or live in “nannies”, to spend time with their children throughout the week. Responsibilities will vary, but in almost all cases, you will have accommodation, food and a weekly stipend.

4. Volunteer through Workaway or WWOOF

Workaway and WWOff are volunteer exchange programs. These international programs offer numerous volunteer opportunities, while they typically do not offer a stipend, they often offer accommodation or food in exchange for work. These projects can last from a few days to a year and are great cultural exchange experiences.

WWOOF stands for, World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms and their opportunities are ideal for those who are comfortable working outside and doing manual labor. Workaway is a community based platform where you create a profile and connect with hosts around the world who are offering jobs that match your interests. This platform allows you to choose to travel solo, with a partner, or as a group of friends to the same destination. Check out our post on Work Away for the Solo Female Traveler for more details!

5. Working holiday visa

Working holiday visas are a popular choice for many who want to make the leap abroad! U.S. citizens have access to 6 country’s through working holiday visas, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and Singapore.

But, what is a working holiday visa?   A working holiday visa gives you the opportunity to live and temporarily work in a country with vacationing as the main focus, working should not be the priority. This type of visa is ideal for seasonal work, such as, hotel concierge, retail worker, or farm work. These visas can last 6-18 months depending on the country and can lead to additional opportunities!

Sounds like the perfect visa, right? The downside is that most work holiday visas have an age cap for participation that often ranges from 30-35 years old.

6. Seasonal Work Opportunities

Like the idea of working hard for 3-6 months then traveling around for the other 6 months of the year? Then seasonal opportunities are the way to go! Depending on the amount of time you spend in a country you can work as a grape harvester for wineries, a lifeguard or as a sales associate during peak tourist season.

7. Work on a boat, yacht, or cruise ship

Are you an ocean lover? Can see yourself sailing the seas for weeks or months at a time? If so, boat-life is definitely worth exploring. Positions working on boats and yachts range from attendant, entertainer, to management. The money is good, plus, you can cover lots of ground in a short amount of time.

8. Contracting jobs

People need help with everything! Contracting jobs are a way to find paid opportunities  on the spot. Whether that’s painting someone’s house, dog walking, working as a mechanic or a carpenter, manual labor is always in demand wherever you are in the world. Take note that these types of jobs can be risky as most don’t provide benefits and they can be difficult to maintain a stable salary. If you like to live simply and go with the flow then contracting work might be for you.

9. Become a tour guide

As a native English speaker (bonus points if you speak more than one language) you can work as a tour guide in destinations where English speaking visitors travel. Depending where you are, these jobs can be easy to come by. Demand for tour guides is best during the high tourist season.

10. Work as a waiter or a bartender

The customer service industry is always in need of workers. Working as a bartender or waiter requires little-to-no prior experience and you have the chance to earn tips alongside your hourly rate.

11. Work as a house sitter or pet sitter

If you are an animal lover, like myself, consider working as a house sitter or pet sitter. While most opportunities go unpaid, the perk here is that you can hop around from house to house, country to country and have your accommodation covered. Want to know more? Check out our article What is House Sitting? Everything You Need To Get Started .

12. Work at a hotel/hostel/resort

Do you like working in hospitality? Opportunities for working at a hotel, hostel or resort range from administrative assistant, concierge, receptionist, chef to name a few. It’s not too difficult to break into the world of working in hospitality but the work can be grueling.

13. Become an instructor

If you have a specific skill set that can be leveraged, why not try becoming a certified instructor in that field. There are numerous opportunities around the world in fields like health and outdoor activities, for example, scuba diving instructor or yoga instructor. Look into getting certified in your home country or abroad (whichever is easier) and then apply for a job in your specialized field.

14. Highly skilled visa

Did you know that some countries offer positions to foreigners who are highly skilled in demand sectors? Each country has it’s own qualifications for what is considered highly skilled and which roles they apply to, but in general, if you have extensive technical or managerial experience you may have a shot at qualifying. How it works it a that a company abroad would. have to sponsor your visa and this requires an official job offer based on proof of your experience and skill. These positions are well-paid and a great way living abroad long-term.

15. Remote Working

The sky is the limit when it comes to remote work, especially since the pandemic led to remote-work for many office workers! From freelance to being an employee, working remotely has changed the industry. You can do anything from translation, transcription, design, customer service, content writing , and more! The options are endless, and remote work is a fantastic option if you see yourself traveling a lot. Here are some of the best job sites to find remote work . And more specifically, if you’re looking for companies who empower employees to work from anywhere (WFA) in the world, not just Anywhere, USA checkout this list of the top WFA companies .

How to Prepare to Work Abroad

In order to work abroad, there are several steps you can take to snag to your ideal gig and doing your due diligence and research is key!

Step 1: Determine if you need a visa and if there is a viable visa option for you The first step in preparing to work abroad is to figure out your visa situation (if one is needed, as most likely, it will be). Visa requirements will depend on your citizenship and your country of destination. Knowing where you can work based on your visa option will help you narrow down your search. If you have your eyes set on Europe, check out our digital book I’m Outta Here! An American’s Ultimate Visa Guide to Living in Europe . You’ll find information on the 17 easiest European countries to move to based on viable visa options, including more than 50+ visa options!

book cover of an american's ultimate visa guide to living in Europe

Step 2: Research the type of job you want Once you narrow down where you want to move to, the job searching process won’t be so overwhelming. You may have to adapt or add to your skill set depending on what jobs you qualify for.

Thorough research is key. Some jobs may be more in demand in a certain country than others. See if your desired job category is feasible to obtain and adapt it from there.

Step 3: Update your resume

A resume could always use a tweek or two every year! Don’t forget to highlight your most recent and relevant experiences and customize a cover letter for each job you plan to apply to. This will help you stand out amongst the crowd!

Keep in mind that if you need a company to sponsor your visa, applying online to jobs abroad doesn’t generally lead to a response. It is very difficult to complete with local talent on paper, especially if you do not have a skill that is in high demand.  Like anywhere in the world your network is the best way to find an opportunity.

While it requires time and patience, the most viable way to score a visa sponsorship is to spend time in the country you want to work in and build a network in the field you are interested in.

Step 4: Apply for potential opportunities in the area/city/town you want to live in (if your goal is to work remotely, you can disregard the location oriented detail)

Dot your i’s and cross your t’s and send off several applications a week! Whether it’s contracted, freelance, or volunteer work, you should apply as early as possible to help your chances of guaranteeing a position abroad, especially for popular programs like the language assistant program in Spain.

jobs abroad 2022

Step 5: Collect documentation for the visa you will need to apply for (if any) Preparing documents can be a long, arduous process so always start early on this one. Certified copies and Apostilles of documents can take months to arrive, so research what document you will need for your intended visa and request them ahead of time, if you can.

Step 6: Once accepted for an opportunity, apply for your visa!

It may be a long waiting game or you may receive a job offer shortly after you apply. Whatever the case, request a visa appointment at the embassy of your jurisdiction. Nowadays, they book out months in advance so be prepared for the waiting time. Use it as an opportunity to collect necessary documents.

Working abroad is a huge decision that will come with numerous rewards! That is to say, the process is no walk in the park, so research, research, research. Network around in-person and in Facebook groups to find opportunities and to get people’s perspective and experience first hand. Find the opportunities that fit your specific interests and choose the country you want to live in. Check out additional resources on the She Hit Refresh site regarding Moving Abroad and Remote Work for more insider tips. Best of luck on your journey to working abroad! You got this.

What are the Most Common Jobs Overseas for Filipinos?

Although Filipinos have traditionally worked in healthcare, from nurses to health technicians, recent job opportunities have expanded to other industries. Typically, Filipinos would find employment overseas for the following jobs:

Maritime Work

Seafarers commonly work as engineers, cooks, and officers in cruise ships, oil tankers, and merchant ships.

Many Filipinos have found teaching jobs as a good entry point to living a new life in another country or as another way to earn an income. They may earn average salaries, but highly qualified teachers eventually move on to better positions or gain enough experience to shift to a higher paying job.

Construction Work

Countries like the United Arab Emirates, Japan, and New Zealand have a great need for skilled laborers, and many qualified Filipinos tend to find work in the industry. It’s hazardous and backbreaking work, but the income is higher abroad than it is in the Philippines.

How Can Filipinos Find Work Abroad?

Requirements for jobs overseas will vary according to the country and the profession you’re entering. In addition to differing documents, qualifications and credentials will be different; if you’re in any healthcare-related profession, you may need to fulfill more requirements than someone teaching English.

So before you start looking up opening for work abroad, learn more about the visa requirements of the country you prefer. Is the process complex or straightforward? Does the country have a working holiday visa that would allow you to test the waters of working in another country before you commit to a yearlong post? Once you’ve determined the requirements and the process, you can search for jobs overseas on online job platforms and apply directly through such portals.

Jobs in France

France is one of the most desirable places in the world to work abroad as an expat. As one of the world’s wealthiest countries with a very high standard of living, France has always been a centrally influential cultural, economic, and political force in European affairs. Not to mention it is one of the most scenically beautiful nations in the world, with sprawling hills and vineyards spanning from the magnificent cliffs of Normandy in the West to the towering Alps in the East. Working in France can truly be the experience of a lifetime whatever your field of interest.

There are many places to find work in France, including away from the cities. Living in the rural areas of France and working in a small town or in the countryside can be a sublime experience for expats. France is a large and diverse country, so do your research carefully when determining what kind of environment you want to work and live in.

Paris is the obvious place to start when seeking jobs in France. The City of Love is an ideal place to find work in France, however long your stay and whatever your area of employment. Today Paris is one of the most globally connected cities on the planet and one of the most influential in terms of film, fashion, literature, and artistic excellence.

Marseilles , Lyon , and Toulouse , are other popular cities for jobs abroad in France that offer expats a more authentically French experience for working abroad in France, as they are not so iconically global. Lyon is known as the Capital of Lights because of the annual Fête des Lumières festival, Marseilles is France’s largest commercial port city sitting pristinely on the Mediterranean coast, and Toulouse is one of the primary French hubs of education.

The types of jobs in France available to foreign workers depend primarily on whether you plan to live in France temporarily or you plan on settling in and pursuing a full time career. For example, there are many opportunities to work in France as a teacher , au pair , or on a vineyard, but these openings tend to be temporary and rarely last more than one year.

Business. With major cities that have a global influence such as Paris, business jobs in France are great opportunities to get to experience the French culture and also gain credible work experience. You may also have the experience while working in France to gain work experience in French.

Hospitality. Working in France bring many opportunities in the field of hospitality, from restaurants to hotels, you can pretend you’re a local Frenchman while helping serve the tourist, and local, community.

Culinary Arts and Cooking . If you are a food lover by day and cuisinier by night, France may be the perfect place for you to stir the pot and add a sprinkle of international flare to your cooking. You will be able to learn and grow personally and professionally, and also enjoy the food!

France has one of the highest performing economies in the world and as such is a fairly expensive place to live and work abroad. General costs of living in big cities, such as Paris, will be significantly higher than in the countryside, so keep this in mind when determining where to pursue job opportunities in France. Foreign workers are often compensated via other means if working in France is only temporarily. This compensation may be room and board, for example. However, full time salaries vary heavily between fields of employment and location.

The type of accommodation you will have available while working in France depends on the type of employment you are seeking. Temporary workers are often offered the opportunity to live with a local host family if they are, say, au pairing or working as an English tutor.

However, most expats in France end up finding themselves their own apartment or flat to live in to provide a more independent lifestyle while working in France. It will be much cheaper to start by renting out a room, then perhaps moving into your own place once you have saved up the money to do so.

If you wish to work in France more permanently, the situation becomes trickier because you will have to go through the process of obtaining a work and residential visa. If you are from the European Union then you are not required to obtain a work visa to pursue jobs in France. International workers from other countries, on the other hand, face a slightly more difficult situation - work visas have to be endorsed and organized by your host employer, so you will need to find work in France before actually moving to the country. Check your Embassy for the most up-to-date visa information.

Finding work abroad in France is an extremely romantic notion to most, but one well worth pursuing if you are willing to commit to learning the language and immersing yourself fully in this wonderful culture. If you are willing to embrace the culture, the language, and the people, you will gain incredible work experience that will help open doors for you future. Working abroad in France will set you apart from your counterparts in job searches in the future—if you ever end up leaving (visa pending, of course)!

French is the language of business across the country and for most jobs abroad in France you will be expected to have at least basic competency in French. There are some temporary jobs in France which do not require you to be fluent in French, but the locals will be much more welcoming if you are able to speak the language. Many French people do speak English, but it is well worth the effort to learn the language so that you can fully experience French culture.

If you are seriously considering working abroad, then there are few places better than France to begin your journey.

What to do while working abroad over the summer, 1. teach english in asia $$$.

Are you a native English speaker? Then teaching English abroad could be one of the best paying job opportunities for you. As English continues to be the business and political language of the world, there is never a shortage of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) positions available around the world. The pay varies greatly from country to country, and even school to school, but by strategically planning where you want to teach English, you can earn a very decent living.

There has long been debate over which country pays English teachers the most, but generally speaking, Asia, especially South Korea, is your best bet, along with Middle Eastern countries, which also pay very well.

[ 10 Highest Paid Teaching Jobs Abroad ]

Most English teaching jobs abroad require a one-year contract. However, short-term opportunities can also be found, usually in the form of summer schools or summer camps for children.

While pay for short-term opportunities might not be as high as for full-time teaching jobs, many positions come with added benefits that can add a lot of value—perfect option as paid summer jobs abroad for students. Free language classes, accommodation, and travel allowance are just some of the benefits to look out for when looking for English teaching jobs abroad.

Teaching English in Asia is a tried-and-true way to make good money during the summer.

2. Work in hospitality in places that practice tipping $$

Working in hospitality can be a mixed bag, as the pay can range from meagre and meh to actually being one of the most lucrative summer jobs. It really does depend on what type of job you do and which country you choose to work in, and especially whether that country encourages tipping.

For example, working as a waiter/waitress in the US will usually mean a low hourly wage, while the average pay of waiting staff in Australia is higher at around AU$20 (US$15) per hour. However, Australia doesn’t have a tipping culture, whereas it’s common to be tipped around 20% of the bill in the United States. So, depending on the job and venue, you could make even more in a country where tipping is customary.

A great way to increase your tips is to work at more expensive venues. For example, if the average tip is around 20% and the average bill per table is around $50, you’ll make $10 in tips from each table. If the average meal is $100 though, you automatically double your tips per table. Also, try to work in busier locations, as the turnaround per table will be higher and so you’ll be able to make more tips.

[ 10 Best Places to Live Abroad for Americans Who Miss Feeling Hopeful ]

Remember that not all hospitality jobs are created equal when it comes to tipping. Housekeeping staff tend to get tipped less than waiters, who themselves get tipped less than bartenders. One of the best-tipped jobs is working as a dealer at a casino. So, if you’re good with cards, this could be a great choice for you.

3. Become an au pair in the Middle East & Australia $$$$

Au pair jobs are some of the most paid summer jobs abroad and for good reason. You get to live with a family in a new country, get to experience the culture from a local point of view, and get to play a big role in kids’ lives. On top of that, au pairs usually get room and board for free, so your living costs are very low.

Dubai from above

The Middle East is a treasure trove of lucrative summer jobs. ?

On the other side, working as an au pair isn’t usually associated with making a lot of cash. In most cases, your host family will pay you a small stipend each month, so that you can enjoy your days off, almost like pocket money. However, it really depends on which country you choose for au pair work . While you might only get paid a few hundred Euros in most European countries, other countries tend to pay much higher salaries.

So, which countries pay the most? Unsurprisingly, you can earn the most as an au pair in Australia and the Middle East. In Australia, the average monthly pay is around $1,000, while you might make anywhere from $1,000–2,000 in Dubai and other countries in the United Arab Emirates. Also, as you don’t have to pay rent, you can save most of your salary for travel on your days off and during school holidays.

4. Score resort jobs in Europe with housing & meals included $$

Does spending your entire summer in a beautiful, sunny destination, where others usually only go for short vacation sound good? Then a job at a European holiday resort might be a great choice for you. There are dozens of roles that resorts need to fill each summer. From receptionists to kid’s reps and pool guards, to bartenders, service staff and entertainment crew. There’s a role for everyone.

And while resort jobs might not be the highest paying summer jobs available, they certainly have some advantages. Many resort jobs include not only food but also a room for their seasonal workers. So, a moderate monthly salary will stretch much further, because you will save hundreds of dollars on rent and food. If you spend your money wisely, you could save over $1,000 each month while working with a group of people from around the world. As a bonus, many resorts will cover either part or all your travel costs, to get to and from the resort town.

Resort jobs are not just restricted to Europe—they can be found all around the world. However, many European countries have working holiday visas that make applying for jobs there relatively straightforward.

  • Become an entertainer in Spain
  • Work at a 5 star resort in Cyprus

5. Tough it out during outdoor work in Alaska $$

Are sun and fun at the sea not really your thing? Or maybe you’re looking for a less-traditional summer location, a little off the beaten path? Well, look no further than Alaska to find paid summer jobs abroad for students and career breakers alike.

With views like these, you might not care about the salary of summer jobs in Alaska! ? #jk #stillimportant

Alaska might not sound like a great summer job destination, but it actually has a lot to offer job seekers. The summer season in Alaska is the busiest for tourism, mainly in the outdoor and adventure niche. From June to September, a range of job opportunities become available, many of which are very well paid, because Alaska is remote and has a low population.

[ How to Save For—And Pay For—Work Abroad Programs ]

Furthermore, many adventure jobs hire people with little to no experience, which means you’ll get plenty of training and can add new skills to your resumé. Jobs range from rafting guides to cooks, and tour guides, to dog handlers. In your free time, you’ll be able to enjoy the stunning countryside and try out some new activities such as fishing, hiking, rafting and zip lining.

6. Summer cruise ship jobs $$$

Cruise ship jobs are some of the most coveted travel jobs. Although it’s not a traditional summer job industry, there are ways to snag yourself summer jobs on cruise ships.

As with all jobs, planning and preparation are very important when you’re looking for a seasonal cruise ship job. Look for regions that have peak cruising season during the summer months, for example, Alaska or Europe, especially Northern Europe. River cruise lines can also be a great choice, as they often only operate during the summer months. Jobs vary greatly, so you could work as service staff, an entertainer, a skipper, or nurse, but all positions come with free accommodation and meals so that you can save most of your pay.

Another option is to apply for youth counselor jobs , which are much more in demand during the summer months when families are more likely to join cruises.

7. Rickshaw driving—but seriously! $

This one might sound a little crazy, but rickshaws have grown in popularity hugely over the last 10 years or so. While they used to be only seen in Asia, rickshaws now roam the streets of most European countries. Even smaller towns nowadays offer rickshaw tours as a fun and comfortable alternative to traditional walking or bicycle tours.

[ Bookmark & compare international summer jobs with MyGoAbroad ]

Driving a rickshaw requires a certain amount of fitness, so make sure you train a bit before applying for jobs. They are usually quite well paid, and most rickshaw drivers make a nice extra income from tips. There are ways to maximize tipping, such as by driving night and weekend shifts, when partygoers are looking for a fun way to get back to their hotels. Also, if you manage to get a highly coveted job as a rickshaw driver in Munich, during Oktoberfest, you can expect very generous tips indeed.

8. Be our next favorite bicycle tour guide in Europe $$

Working as a tour guide can be a fun and interesting way to travel the world while making good money and improving your resume . While there can be a lot of competition for traditional tour guide jobs, adding a little adventure tends to result in higher pay and less job competition.

Europe is a great place to work as a bicycle tour guide, with cities like Berlin, London, and Paris providing a growing number of bicycle tours. Some smaller locations also have popular cycling tours, so it’s worth looking around.

The requirements for working as a tour guide differ from country to country, so make sure you have the required qualifications or paperwork before applying for jobs. Generally, you should be fit, able to ride a bike comfortably and safely, have good people skills, and have a passion for the city you’re working in.

Why You Should Go on a Study Abroad

Posted: November 09, 2022 | Author: Abbie Cochrane | Read Time: 3 minutes

study abroad

During this study abroad in London, I was joined by other theatre majors and some students who weren’t connected to theatre at all. I’m a musical theatre major, so this trip was practically tailor-made for me. However, there were a few students in our trip of 30 who weren’t theatre based at all! Any student can study abroad and is encouraged to do so. These trips are an awesome way to get credits for any general requirements beyond sitting in a classroom. You get to see a unique part of the world and get school credit for it. Sounds like a perfect deal.

It was a bit tricky to figure out international flights and fill out all the necessary paperwork, but with the help of my professors, my first time traveling out of the country went smoothly. The hard part can be scraping the money together, but I promise you, it is completely worth every cent. Not to mention that SUU offers study abroad scholarships ! I have never had an experience like this, and I learned so much from the trip–things that I will remember for the rest of my life.

London has been my dream destination since I was very young. This trip was a dream come true due to my love of learning and theatre. Most of our days were spent touring different museums and seeing the history preserved in glass cases for the world to see. My favorite museums were the National Gallery, the British Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. We also visited several historical landmarks like Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, the Tower of London, and the one and only Buckingham Palace. If you like art and history, you will love this trip.

I saw seven theatre productions while I was there, and even if theatre isn’t your thing, I can promise you that it is magical to see a West End or Globe production. Theatre is like a religion to the actors of London. They live and breathe it. In London, theatre is celebrated beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. I had many encounters with people in the city who asked where I was from and what I was doing in London. Whenever I mentioned I was a musical theatre student, their eyes would light up. The people are some of the nicest in the world. Not only the people from the U.K., but the streets were a melting pot of culture. I didn’t walk ten steps without hearing six different languages and seeing all kinds of people.

The thing I loved most about London was the rich history. The city is centuries old and has seen the rise and fall of some of the most powerful empires to ever exist. It has been the home of many creative minds and you can feel the roots that bind the past with the present as the city looks to the future. If the cobblestone streets could talk, they’d sing tales of kings and queens, poets and writers, actors, scientists, war heroes, and every other person of merit who walked these streets before.

Study Abroad at SUU

If you have a chance to study abroad, take it. It’s one of the most wonderful and life-changing experiences. To see a different part of the world and learn from it has benefitted my education in ways I never thought possible. You make friends with the people on your trip and you experience the world together.

For more information about how to study abroad as a student at SUU, visit the Learning Abroad Office or talk to your academic advisor. To learn more about the London trip, visit the SUU in London page.

‘My future is taken away from me’: Russians flee to escape consequences of Moscow’s war

Growing numbers of Russians are leaving the country, fearful of possible martial law and the war’s consequences

Alexei Trubetskoy knew he had to get out the moment he woke up and looked at his phone on the morning of Russia’s invasion into Ukraine .

“I got up, checked the news in disbelief and realized I had to leave as soon as I can,” he said. Trubetskoy, who runs an English language school in Moscow, bought a ticket to Sri Lanka on the same day.

“It was clear to me that the horrible invasion will change Russia forever.”

A growing number of Russians have decided to leave their country following Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine, fearing the economic and political consequences the move will have.

“I hope to return to the country I love, but it is completely unclear what will happen next. My future is taken away from me, the country won’t be the same,” Trubetskoy said.

Russia has already seen a major crackdown on those opposing the invasion .

More than 7,500 people have so far been detained at anti-war protests across the country, according to the independent monitoring site OVD-Info. A number of the country’s independent news outlets have also been forced to shut down.

But those who leave are also fearful of the economic uncertainties that the country now faces: the Russian rouble and financial markets crashed this week after the West implemented crippling sanctions , and Moscow has also seen a mass exodus of western companies, including Ikea, Apple and Nike.

'No to war!': Russian protesters defy Putin – video report

Google analytics showed that the word “emigration” saw a spike in searches over the last week while countless Telegram channels have been set up in which worried Russians are discussing ways to leave the country.

Andrei Kolesnikov, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment, said it was expected that the country would see an exodus of its “quality working force” who will sense there is “no future” for them in Russia.

“This exodus will mean the degradation of the nation. The country doesn’t have a very large pool of talented people. Without them, Russia can’t develop itself,” Kolesnikov said

The exodus has been fuelled by rumours that authorities could declare martial law as soon as Friday , when the federation council, Russia’s upper house of parliament, is due to hold an unscheduled meeting.

Such a move would be unprecedented in modern Russian history and could involve mass mobilization of the male population as well as the closure of borders, according to an official document describing the law.

“I got my family together after a friend at the ‘top’ called me about this martial law thing. We booked the first plane available on Tuesday and flew to a random country I have never been before,” said Anton, a senior manager at a major Russian oil and gas firm. “I am not planning to fight in this war that wasn’t my decision to begin with.”

Tatyana Stanovaya, a prominent Russian political analyst and founder of R.Politik, on Wednesday evening tweeted that introducing a martial law could be a “logical scenario”.

“The proclamation of martial law will allow the authorities to introduce military censorship, to increase the secrecy of the state’s activities and the actions of local bodies.”

Russian pensioner 'who survived siege of Leningrad' arrested for protest against Ukraine war – video

The last time the federation council called an unscheduled meeting was February 22, when the body approved Vladimir Putin’s request to use military force outside the country, two days before the invasion of Ukraine. The federation council said it will officially meet to discuss a package of anti-crisis measures in response to western sanctions.

In a briefing with reporters on Thursday, the Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, dismissed speculation about the introduction of martial law. A senior source working at one of the three major airports in Moscow also said he believed it was “unlikely” that the borders would close.

“We haven’t been informed about anything. I think it is unlikely. At the same time we are in a war, so let’s see,” the source said.

But as speculation mounted, a feverish mood was felt in Moscow on Thursday.

Those seeking to leave faced a severe lack of available flights after western countries closed their airspace to Russian airlines. Moscow has also closed its airspace to much of the west in response.

Flights to Yerevan, Istanbul and Belgrade were completely sold out for the coming days while a one-way ticket to Dubai was priced at over £3,000 ($4,006) – compared with £250 ($334) in ordinary times – according to the flight aggregator Skyscanner. Train tickets from St Petersburg to Helsinki were also sold out on Thursday and Friday.

Some men who left earlier this week said they were extensively questioned at the Russian border.

Andrei, a Moscow-based cinema director, said he was held at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport before boarding a flight to Baku.

His luggage was searched, and an official went through his private chats on different messaging apps.

“He took my phone and spent a good hour scrolling through everything. Luckily, I deleted all chats discussing my opposition to the war on Telegram and Signal,” Andrei said.

“I was asked if I ‘truly’ loved my country and if I was against the war. He asked me why I wanted to ‘flee’ and why I was reading independent outlets like Meduza.

“It was one of the scariest moments in my life,” said Andrei, who eventually was allowed to board his flight.

‘Ukrainians are our friends’: the young Russian anti-war protesters defying Putin – video

Amid growing uncertainty, the head of the central bank, Elvira Nabiullina, urged her fellow Russians to stay calm.

“We will definitely pull through this…Friends, let’s remember, a lot is dependent on us, we need to leave behind any disputes and just help our colleagues,” Nabiullina said in a rare public statement aired on Russian state television. Russia earlier this week also introduced new laws to stimulate the country’s IT sector. Many Russians working in tech will likely be eyeing to leave the country given that their skills will be valued abroad.

But despite efforts by officials to convey a sense of stability, some at the very top of the Russian government have themselves evacuated their loved ones.

“Our whole family flew to a country south of Russia earlier this week. We were advised to leave as soon as possible,” said the daughter of a top Russian official who has met Putin on multiple occasions. “We will weather the storm here.”

DMW: Illegal recruiter promising jobs abroad arrested

MANILA, Philippines — A woman accused of being an illegal recruiter was arrested in a joint operation of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Mandaluyong City Police.

According to DMW on Friday, Quezon City resident Marjorie Almarez, 33, was involved in scamming people seeking jobs overseas.

During the entrapment operation, Almarez accepted the money from a complainant to whom she promised a job as a fruit picker in Japan with a P77,000 monthly salary.

The DMW added that when the victim saw Almarez’s transaction, they notified the DMW, which confirmed that she was not licensed by the agency to provide overseas jobs, leading to the entrapment operation.

Currently, Almarez is detained in the Mandaluyong Police Station and will face charges of illegal recruitment and estafa.

The DMW also told other job seekers who may have been scammed by Almarez to connect with its office.

Russia’s BN-800 refuelled with mox: full mox core planned for 2022

!{Model.Description}

The first full refuelling of Russia’s BN-800 fast reactor at unit 4 of the Beloyarsk NPP with only uranium-plutonium mixed oxide (mox) fuel was completed during the recent scheduled maintenance outage, fuel company TVEL (part of Rosatom) announced on 24 February. The unit, which was shut down on 8 January, has been reconnected to the grid and has resumed electricity production. The first 18 serial mox fuel assemblies were loaded into the reactor in January 2020, and another 160 fuel assemblies have now been added to them. Thus, the BN-800 core is now one-third filled with innovative fuel and in future only mox fuel will be loaded into the reactor.

“Beloyarsk NPP is now one step closer to implementation of the strategic direction for the development of the nuclear industry - the creation of a new technological platform based on a closed nuclear fuel cycle,” said Ivan Sidorov, Director of the Beloyarsk NPP. “The use of mox fuel will make it possible to involve in fuel manufacture the isotope of uranium that is not currently used. This will increase the fuel base of the nuclear power industry tenfold. In addition, the BN-800 reactor can reuse used nuclear fuel from other NPPs and minimise radioactive waste by “afterburning” long-lived isotopes from them. Taking into account the planned schedule, we will be able to switch to a core with a full load of mox fuel in 2022.”

The fuel assemblies were manufactured at the Mining and Chemical Combine (MCC, Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory). Unlike enriched uranium, which is traditional for nuclear power, the raw materials for the production of mox fuel pellets are plutonium oxide produced in power reactors and depleted uranium oxide (obtained by defluorination of depleted uranium hexafluoride - DUHF, the secondary "tailings" of the enrichment plant.

“In parallel with loading the BN-800 core with mox fuel, Rosatom specialists are continuing to develop technologies for the production of such fuel at the MCC,” said Alexander Ugryumov, vice president for research, development and quality at TVEL. “In particular, the production of fresh fuel using high-background plutonium extracted from the irradiated fuel of VVER reactors has been mastered: all technological operations are fully automated and are performed without the presence of personnel in the immediate vicinity. The first 20 mox-FAs incorporating high-background plutonium have already been manufactured and passed acceptance tests, and they are planned to be loaded in 2022. Advanced technologies for recycling nuclear materials and refabrication of nuclear fuel in the future will make it possible to process irradiated fuel instead of storing it, as well as to reduce the amount of high-level waste generated.”

Serial production of mox fuel began at the end of 2018 at MCC. To achieve this, broad industry cooperation was organised under the coordination and scientific leadership of TVEL, which supplies the mox-fuel to Beloyarsk NPP. Initially, the BN-800 reactor was launched with a hybrid core, partly equipped with uranium fuel produced by Mashinostroitelny Zavod in Elektrostal (Moscow Region), and partly with experimental mox assemblies manufactured at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) in Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region).
