How much does it cost to start a phone case business?

Startup costs for a phone case business range from around $4,500 to $30,000 with an average of around $17,000. At the low end, you can start with a phone case making kit to make your own cases and sell via an online marketplace like Amazon or Etsy to avoid the cost of creating your own website. The high-end option would include hiring a manufacturer to make your first batch of cases.

You’ll need a phone case making starter kit and a case design software to successfully launch your phone case business.

How much can you earn from a phone case business?

Making a phone case can cost as little as $2, while that case can then be sold at a retail price of $15, resulting in an approximately 85% profit margin.

If you’re a solopreneur, you could work from home and sell 2,000 units in a year, bringing in $30,000 in annual revenue and at least $25,000 in profit. As your brand gains recognition, sales could climb to 10,000 units a year. At this stage, you might rent an office and hire staff, reducing your margin to 50%. With expected annual revenue of $150,000, you’d make about $75,000.

Step 2: hone your idea.

Now that you know what’s involved in starting a phone case business, it’s a good idea to hone your idea in preparation to enter a competitive market.

Market research will give you the upper hand, even if you’re already positive that you have a perfect product or service. Conducting market research is important, because it can help you understand your customers better, who your competitors are, and your business landscape.

Why? Identify an opportunity

Examine the latest phone case designs and themes, and particularly those seeing strong sales, to come up with a concept for your own designs.

mobile cover printing business plan

Try to find a unique approach or design to differentiate your products and stand out in a crowded market.

What? Determine your products or services

You’ll not only need to choose a list of designs that you want to make, but also determine your materials and which phones you’ll make cases for. You could choose the most common models, or choose less common models to create a niche market.

How much should you charge for phone cases?

The average price for a phone case in a marketplace like Amazon is between $10 – $20, but prices are often much higher. You should start at the low end at first until you start to gain traction with your business.

Once you know your costs, you can use this Step By Step profit margin calculator to determine your mark-up and final price points. Remember, the prices you use at launch should be subject to change if warranted by the market.

Who? Identify your target market

Your target market will depend on your designs. If your designs are fun and trendy, you may wish to target a younger audience found on sites like Instagram and TikTok.

Where? Choose your business premises

In the early stages, you may want to operate your business from home to keep costs low. But as your business grows, you’ll likely need to hire workers for various roles. You may need to rent out a storefront or office for your operations. You can find commercial space to rent in your area on sites such as Craigslist , Crexi , and Instant Offices .

When choosing a commercial space, you may want to follow these rules of thumb:

  • Central location accessible via public transport
  • Ventilated and spacious, with good natural light
  • Flexible lease that can be extended as your business grows
  • Ready-to-use space with no major renovations or repairs needed

Step 3: Brainstorm a Phone Case Business Name

Your business name is your business identity, so choose one that encapsulates your objectives, services, and mission in just a few words. You probably want a name that’s short and easy to remember, since much of your business, and your initial business in particular, will come from word-of-mouth referrals.

Here are some ideas for brainstorming your business name:

  • Short, unique, and catchy names tend to stand out
  • Names that are easy to say and spell tend to do better
  • The name should be relevant to your product or service offerings
  • Ask around — family, friends, colleagues, social media — for suggestions
  • Including keywords, such as “phone case” or “phone protector”, boosts SEO
  • Choose a name that allows for expansion: “The Phone Armor Company” over “Luxury Phone Cases Company”
  • Avoid location-based names that might hinder future expansion
  • Use online tools like the Step by Step Business Name Generator . Just type in a few keywords and hit “generate” and you’ll have dozens of suggestions at your fingertips.

Once you’ve got a list of potential names, visit the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office to make sure they are available for registration and check the availability of related domain names using our Domain Name Search tool. Using “.com” or “.org” sharply increases credibility, so it’s best to focus on these.

Find a Domain

Powered by GoDaddy.com

Finally, make your choice among the names that pass this screening and go ahead with domain registration and social media account creation. Your business name is one of the key differentiators that set your business apart. Once you pick your company name, and start with the branding, it is hard to change the business name. Therefore, it’s important to carefully consider your choice before you start a business entity.

Step 4: Create a Phone Case Business Plan

Every business needs a plan. This will function as a guidebook to take your startup through the launch process and maintain focus on your key goals. A business plan also enables potential partners and investors to better understand your company and its vision:

  • Executive Summary: A concise summary outlining the business’s mission, goals, and key achievements, providing a quick overview for potential investors or stakeholders.
  • Business Overview: A detailed description of the phone case business, including its mission, vision, values, and the problem it aims to solve in the market.
  • Product and Services: Clear details about the specific phone cases offered, including features, design options, and any additional services such as customization or warranty.
  • Market Analysis: An in-depth examination of the target market, identifying customer needs, trends, and the business’s positioning within the industry.
  • Competitive Analysis: Evaluation of key competitors in the phone case market, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, and strategies to gain a competitive edge.
  • Sales and Marketing: A comprehensive plan outlining how the business will promote and sell its phone cases, encompassing online and offline marketing strategies, pricing, and distribution channels.
  • Management Team: Introduction to the individuals responsible for running the business, including their qualifications and roles in ensuring the company’s success.
  • Operations Plan: A detailed overview of the day-to-day operations, covering production, supply chain management, and logistics to ensure efficient and effective business processes.
  • Financial Plan: A projection of the business’s financial performance, including revenue forecasts, expenses, and profit margins, providing a clear picture of the company’s financial health and viability.
  • Appendix: Supplementary materials, such as additional market research, legal documents, or any other relevant information that supports and enhances the business plan.

what to include in a business plan

If you’ve never created a business plan, it can be an intimidating task. You might consider hiring a business plan specialist to create a top-notch business plan for you.

Step 5: Register Your Business

Registering your business is an absolutely crucial step — it’s the prerequisite to paying taxes, raising capital, opening a bank account, and other guideposts on the road to getting a business up and running.

Plus, registration is exciting because it makes the entire process official. Once it’s complete, you’ll have your own business!

Choose where to register your company

Your business location is important because it can affect taxes, legal requirements, and revenue. Most people will register their business in the state where they live, but if you are planning to expand, you might consider looking elsewhere, as some states could offer real advantages when it comes to phone case manufacturing.

If you’re willing to move, you could really maximize your business! Keep in mind, it’s relatively easy to transfer your business to another state.

Choose your business structure

Business entities come in several varieties, each with its pros and cons. The legal structure you choose for your phone case business will shape your taxes, personal liability, and business registration requirements, so choose wisely.

Here are the main options:

  • Sole Proprietorship – The most common structure for small businesses makes no legal distinction between company and owner. All income goes to the owner, who’s also liable for any debts, losses, or liabilities incurred by the business. The owner pays taxes on business income on his or her personal tax return.
  • General Partnership – Similar to a sole proprietorship, but for two or more people. Again, owners keep the profits and are liable for losses. The partners pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC) – Combines the characteristics of corporations with those of sole proprietorships or partnerships. Again, the owners are not personally liable for debts.
  • C Corp – Under this structure, the business is a distinct legal entity and the owner or owners are not personally liable for its debts. Owners take profits through shareholder dividends, rather than directly. The corporation pays taxes, and owners pay taxes on their dividends, which is sometimes referred to as double taxation.
  • S Corp – An S-Corporation refers to the tax classification of the business but is not a business entity. An S-Corp can be either a corporation or an LLC , which just need to elect to be an S-Corp for tax status. In an S-Corp, income is passed through directly to shareholders, who pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.

types of business structures

We recommend that new business owners choose LLC as it offers liability protection and pass-through taxation while being simpler to form than a corporation. You can form an LLC in as little as five minutes using an online LLC formation service. They will check that your business name is available before filing, submit your articles of organization , and answer any questions you might have.

Step 6: Register for Taxes

The final step before you’re able to pay taxes is getting an Employer Identif i cation Number , or EIN. You can file for your EIN online or by mail or fax: visit the IRS website to learn more. Keep in mind, if you’ve chosen to be a sole proprietorship you can simply use your social security number as your EIN.

Once you have your EIN, you’ll need to choose your tax year. Financially speaking, your business will operate in a calendar year (January–December) or a fiscal year, a 12-month period that can start in any month. This will determine your tax cycle, while your business structure will determine which taxes you’ll pay.

The IRS website also offers a tax-payers checklist , and taxes can be filed online.

It is important to consult an accountant or other professional to help you with your taxes to ensure you are completing them correctly.

Step 7: Fund your Phone Case Business

Securing financing is your next step and there are plenty of ways to raise capital:

  • Bank loans: This is the most common method but getting approved requires a rock-solid business plan and strong credit history.
  • SBA-guaranteed loans: The Small Business Administration can act as guarantor, helping gain that elusive bank approval via an SBA-guaranteed loan .
  • Government grants: A handful of financial assistance programs help fund entrepreneurs. Visit Grants.gov to learn which might work for you.
  • Venture capital: Venture capital investors take an ownership stake in exchange for funds, so keep in mind that you’d be sacrificing some control over your business. This is generally only available for businesses with high growth potential.
  • Friends and Family: Reach out to friends and family to provide a business loan or investment in your concept. It’s a good idea to have legal advice when doing so because SEC regulations apply.
  • Crowdfunding: Websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer an increasingly popular low-risk option, in which donors fund your vision. Entrepreneurial crowdfunding sites like Fundable and WeFunder enable multiple investors to fund your business.
  • Personal: Self-fund your business via your savings or the sale of property or other assets.

Bank and SBA loans are probably the best options, other than friends and family, for funding a phone case business. You might also try crowdfunding if you have an innovative concept.

types of business funding

Step 8: Apply for Licenses and Permits

Starting a phone case business requires obtaining a number of licenses and permits from local, state, and federal governments.

Federal regulations, licenses, and permits associated with starting your business include doing business as (DBA), health licenses and permits from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ), trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other intellectual properties, as well as industry-specific licenses and permits.

You may also need state-level and local county or city-based licenses and permits. The license requirements and how to obtain them vary, so check the websites of your state, city, and county governments or contact the appropriate person to learn more.

You could also check this SBA guide for your state’s requirements, but we recommend using MyCorporation’s Business License Compliance Package . They will research the exact forms you need for your business and state and provide them to ensure you’re fully compliant.

This is not a step to be taken lightly, as failing to comply with legal requirements can result in hefty penalties.

If you feel overwhelmed by this step or don’t know how to begin, it might be a good idea to hire a professional to help you check all the legal boxes.

Step 9: Open a Business Bank Account

Before you start making money, you’ll need a place to keep it, and that requires opening a bank account .

Keeping your business finances separate from your personal account makes it easy to file taxes and track your company’s income, so it’s worth doing even if you’re running your phone case business as a sole proprietorship. Opening a business bank account is quite simple, and similar to opening a personal one. Most major banks offer accounts tailored for businesses — just inquire at your preferred bank to learn about their rates and features.

Banks vary in terms of offerings, so it’s a good idea to examine your options and select the best plan for you. Once you choose your bank, bring in your EIN (or Social Security Number if you decide on a sole proprietorship), articles of incorporation, and other legal documents and open your new account.

Step 10: Get Business Insurance

Business insurance is an area that often gets overlooked yet it can be vital to your success as an entrepreneur. Insurance protects you from unexpected events that can have a devastating impact on your business.

Here are some types of insurance to consider:

  • General liability : The most comprehensive type of insurance, acting as a catch-all for many business elements that require coverage. If you get just one kind of insurance, this is it. It even protects against bodily injury and property damage.
  • Business Property : Provides coverage for your equipment and supplies.
  • Equipment Breakdown Insurance : Covers the cost of replacing or repairing equipment that has broken due to mechanical issues.
  • Worker’s compensation : Provides compensation to employees injured on the job.
  • Property : Covers your physical space, whether it is a cart, storefront, or office.
  • Commercial auto : Protection for your company-owned vehicle.
  • Professional liability : Protects against claims from a client who says they suffered a loss due to an error or omission in your work.
  • Business owner’s policy (BOP) : This is an insurance plan that acts as an all-in-one insurance policy, a combination of any of the above insurance types.

types of business insurance

Step 11: Prepare to Launch

As opening day nears, prepare for launch by reviewing and improving some key elements of your business.

Essential software and tools

Being an entrepreneur often means wearing many hats, from marketing to sales to accounting, which can be overwhelming. Fortunately, many websites and digital tools are available to help simplify many business tasks.

Design software, such as HAVIpropel , PhotoCenter3D , and PRINTFUL , can help turn you into a brilliant designer of phone cases.

  • Popular web-based accounting programs for smaller businesses include Quickbooks , Freshbooks , and Xero .
  • If you’re unfamiliar with basic accounting, you may want to hire a professional, especially as you begin. The consequences for filing incorrect tax documents can be harsh, so accuracy is crucial.

Develop your website

Website development is crucial because your site is your online presence and needs to convince prospective clients of your expertise and professionalism.

You can create your own website using services like WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace . This route is very affordable, but figuring out how to build a website can be time-consuming. If you lack tech-savvy, you can hire a web designer or developer to create a custom website for your business.

They are unlikely to find your website, however, unless you follow Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) practices. These are steps that help pages rank higher in the results of top search engines like Google.

For a phone case business, your marketing strategy should highlight the unique qualities and design features of your cases, emphasizing their aesthetics, protection levels, and customizability. Here are some powerful marketing strategies for your future business:

Kickstart Marketing

  • Professional Branding: Develop a visual identity that reflects style and reliability. This includes logo design, product packaging, and online store aesthetics.
  • Direct Outreach: Connect with tech bloggers, influencers, and accessory retailers to explore partnership and feature opportunities.

Digital Presence and Online Marketing

  • Professional Website and SEO: Create an engaging online storefront showcasing your range, with customer reviews and SEO optimization for better search visibility.
  • Social Media Engagement: Use platforms like Instagram for visual storytelling and Facebook for community building, highlighting product features and customer experiences.

Content Marketing and Engagement

  • Blog on Phone Case Trends: Publish posts on design trends, protection technology, and customization options to educate and engage your audience.
  • Email Newsletters: Send updates on new collections, exclusive offers, and behind-the-scenes content to keep your brand top-of-mind.

Experiential and In-Person Engagements

  • Pop-Up Shops and Tech Events: Showcase your cases at tech expos, pop-up shops, or local markets to directly engage with customers.
  • Collaborations with Tech Brands: Partner with smartphone companies or tech accessory brands for co-marketing campaigns.

Collaborations and Community

  • Partnerships with Designers: Collaborate with artists or designers for limited edition cases, enhancing brand uniqueness.
  • Community Support Projects: Participate in or sponsor tech education events to build brand goodwill and awareness.

Customer Relationship and Loyalty Programs

  • Referral Programs: Encourage word-of-mouth marketing with rewards for referrals from satisfied customers.
  • After-Sale Services: Provide exceptional customer service, including warranty and repair services, to build loyalty.

Promotions and Advertising

  • Targeted Online Advertising: Use social media and Google Ads to target tech enthusiasts and smartphone users with visually appealing ads.
  • Influencer Collaborations: Work with tech influencers for product reviews and giveaways to reach a wider audience.

Focus on USPs

Unique selling propositions, or USPs, are the characteristics of a product or service that sets it apart from the competition. Customers today are inundated with buying options, so you’ll have a real advantage if they are able to quickly grasp how your phone cases meet their needs or wishes. It’s wise to do all you can to ensure your USPs stand out on your website and in your marketing and promotional materials, stimulating buyer desire.

Global pizza chain Domino’s is renowned for its USP: “Hot pizza in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed.” Signature USPs for your phone case business could be:

  • Phone cases for the biggest or smallest phones only
  • The wildest and most unique case designs
  • Custom-made designs according to your vision!

unique selling proposition

You may not like to network or use personal connections for business gain. But your personal and professional networks likely offer considerable untapped business potential. Maybe that Facebook friend you met in college is now running a phone case business, or a LinkedIn contact of yours is connected to dozens of potential clients. Maybe your cousin or neighbor has been making phone cases for years and can offer invaluable insight and industry connections.

The possibilities are endless, so it’s a good idea to review your personal and professional networks and reach out to those with possible links to or interest in phone cases. You’ll probably generate new customers or find companies with which you could establish a partnership. Online businesses might also consider affiliate marketing as a way to build relationships with potential partners and boost business.

Step 12: Build Your Team

If you’re starting out small from a home office, you may not need any employees. But as your business grows, you will likely need workers to fill various roles. Potential positions for a phone case business would include:

  • Designers – design new unique cases
  • Customer Service – handle customer calls
  • General Manager – scheduling, hiring and firing, inventory
  • Marketing Lead – SEO optimization, social media strategies

At some point, you may need to hire all of these positions or simply a few, depending on the size and needs of your business. You might also hire multiple workers for a single role or a single worker for multiple roles, again depending on need.

Free-of-charge methods to recruit employees include posting ads on popular platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Jobs.com. You might also consider a premium recruitment option, such as advertising on Indeed , Glassdoor , or ZipRecruiter . Further, if you have the resources, you could consider hiring a recruitment agency to help you find talent.

Step 13: Run a Phone Case Business – Start Making Money!

Much like global phone usage, the phone case industry is growing by leaps and bounds. Think about it: every time you upgrade to a new phone you need a new case. The market is expected to grow further through 2028.

You might want to focus on a niche market, such as making cases only for the most popular smartphones. You might also consider doing creative and unique designs. People like to make a statement with their cases, so feel free to use your creative juices as you launch your new business. You’re now ready to start making phone cases, and good money!

  • Phone Case Business FAQs

Yes, you can. You can purchase design software and a phone case making kit with 100 blank cases for about $4,000. It’s not a difficult process – you just need creative designs.

There are no industry-specific permits required to manufacture cases, but your state or town may require certain licenses and permits. Check with your state and local government offices for requirements.

Profit margins on phone cases are high. When you start by yourself from home, your margin can be up to 80%. Even after you grow your company, your profit margin can still be around 50%. The sky’s the limit when it comes to sales since the market for phone cases is expected to be $35 billion by 2028.

To differentiate your phone cases from competitors, focus on unique designs, customization options, high-quality materials, and durability. Target niche markets, build a compelling brand story, and provide exceptional customer service.

Online, consider establishing your own e-commerce website, selling through popular online marketplaces like Amazon or eBay, and utilizing social media platforms to showcase and sell your products. Offline, explore opportunities to partner with retail stores, set up kiosks or booths at local events or trade shows, and consider consignment arrangements with relevant brick-and-mortar stores.

Is a phone case business profitable?

Starting a phone case business can be a lucrative venture in the online space. Personalized phone cases, in particular, maintain an enduring appeal.

Recent data from Technavio highlights the growing demand: with a 6.86% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), the phone case market’s value is projected to increase by $13.33 billion between 2023 and 2027. Such a trend underscores the abundant opportunities awaiting ecommerce entrepreneurs.

What do you need to start a phone case business?

The main thing any business owner needs when starting a phone case business is a good plan of action. There are many different kinds of cases out there for various types of phones. Make sure you know your options before diving into phone case design. Take a look at:

  • Gel cases: Slim gel cases are easy to customize with a range of designs. They come with additional grip sections, so it’s easier to keep hold of your phone. Gel cases are affordable and versatile—perfect for a range of designs.
  • Bumper cases: Bumper cases usually come with extra protection for the edges and sides of your phone. They may have a full gel section for covering the back of the device or simply wrap around the phone in certain spaces to prevent damage.
  • Wallet cases: For sophisticated customers looking to protect their phone and screen simultaneously, wallet cases cover every part of the phone and defend against scratches. Most come in leather-style materials, which can be customized.
  • Hard cases: Hard cases snap onto the phone and help to protect against damage. They’re great for keeping your phone in good condition, and they can last longer than some gel and rubber options. Hard cases can also be customized.
  • Special cases: Special cases have unique features, like extra shock protection, built-in charging systems, and even hand-carved wood designs. Most of these cases cost a little more, but they can be very appealing to customers.

Don’t forget to think about the kind of phones you want to design for too. There are a huge number of phone models on the market today. As a result, it may not be possible to create cases to fit every option straight away. Ideally, you’ll want to start with the top-selling phones for your target audience.

Tools like Keywords Everywhere can help you track the search volume for specific kinds of phones so you know where to begin.

Though starting your own business can seem daunting at first, the evolving digital world makes it much easier to jump in than you’d think. Here’s what you need to make a phone case business:

1. Find a gap in the market

The best businesses come from discovering a market gap and building a strategy to fill that space. There are tons of phone case companies out there. Finding a specific niche to cater to will help you to build a memorable and competitive brand.

Remember, a specific niche means that you’ll have fewer companies to fight against when it comes to making your company stand out. Focusing on a niche like “eco-friendly” customers will also direct your business processes, determining which kinds of materials you’re going to use and which suppliers you can work with. For instance, you could consider making phone cases using sustainable or recycled materials.

Focusing on a single niche will even help you rank higher with Google, because you can target specific terms that make the most sense to your audience. So, how do you find a gap?

Look at Google Trends

Tools like Google Trends will help you find trending products in your industry, like “wooden” phone cases or “personalized” phone cases. You can also use this tool to determine which phones your customers are most interested in.

Conduct competitor analysis

Checking out your competition will help you see which audiences are already being targeted and which groups still need more options. For instance, you might notice that none of your competitors are offering phone cases specifically for moms, teachers, or professionals.

Speak to your customers

Try speaking to people in your potential target audience. Running surveys on forums and social media groups might help you collect valuable information about your potential niche.

Check out influencers

Visit social media and see what kinds of cases are getting the most attention. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are great places to find phone cases trending amongst audiences.

2. Determine your target audience

Determining your target audience is crucial for online sales. The right phone case design demands the right buyer. For instance, if you design a case inspired by various shades of nail polish, understanding who’s drawn to such designs becomes paramount.

Dig deep into data like:

  • Daily routines
  • Spending habits

Methods to gather this information vary between businesses. Many businesses tap into social media. Facebook Audience Insights can shed light on your potential customers. Others prefer a direct approach, reaching out and surveying their current customer base.

Different demographics have unique preferences. Younger audiences might gravitate toward designs inspired by trending nail polish colors. They might also, however, have budget constraints. Middle-aged buyers might invest in more durable cases, focusing less on design and more on function.

3. Design some phone cases

With your target audience set, it’s time to create some stunning phone cases. This is the fun part, where you get to experiment with different designs. You can create your own mockups in Photoshop or check out the mockup generators offered by print-on-demand (POD) companies. These allow you to see what your design would look like on multiple types of phones.

Double-check your options before you start printing, as some companies will only print using certain techniques or only cover a certain percentage of the case. You can also design your phone cases by:

  • Using customer-generated designs: Have a social media following? Let your audience upload photos and designs for you to print onto a personalized phone case.
  • Working with freelancers: There are tons of freelance artists online who can create phone case designs on your behalf. Many of these professionals are very affordable and can work on cases for many different customers.
  • Reaching out to a designer: Find designers on creative forums and sites, like Dribbble . See who’s willing to work with you on a more long-term basis. You could even hire designers on contracts or ask them to design entire collections for you.

It helps to have a decent selection of options for your customers to choose from before launching your phone case brand. Don’t start a company with just one or two cases. Range matters to smartphone owners.

4. Create a unique online brand

A brand refers to your identity or personality as a business. You can convey this through unique logos and color choices for your company, as well as a well-designed website, packaging strategy, and more. Branding makes your company more memorable to your target audience and helps to set you apart from the competition. Make sure you have:

  • A unique logo to set your brand apart from the competition
  • Attractive visuals like brand photography , animations, videos, and illustrations
  • A color pallet to convey a specific identity and personality for your company—make sure you understand the psychology of colors before creating a palette
  • Content and copywriting to showcase your unique tone of voice
  • A brand name and mission statement that customers can remember
  • A mission or set of brand values to help identify you to customers

It helps to research some of your competitors to see the kind of branding they’ve been trying to build. Make notes of what you like and dislike about similar brands and use the available resources online to start creating. Shopify, for instance, has its own video and logo maker .

5. Source your phone cases

Now it’s time to find a source to supply inventory to your business. There are a few options available here, such as:

Working with a manufacturer

It’s easy enough to find an affordable wholesale manufacturer with platforms like Alibaba and other online marketplaces. Here, you can search for all kinds of phone case types for different devices. You will need to buy in bulk, which means storing hundreds of cases at once, but you can save a lot of cash this way.

Using print on demand

Print-on-demand companies are ideal if you want to easily add your own designs to products and send them straight to customers. With print on demand, you choose a supplier to add your designs to your chosen phone cases, and those companies will create the pieces for you.

Dropshipping

Dropshipping is one of the most affordable ways to source phone cases for your business. You choose a manufacturer who makes the kind of product you want, and they’ll ship your phone cases direct to your customers for you. Dropshipping tools like DSers give you countless phone accessories to choose from, and you can avoid having to look after your own stock.

Confused between the last two? Learn how print-on-demand compares to dropshipping to pick the right sourcing strategy for your business.

6. Price your cases

Choosing the right price point for a product can be one of the toughest parts of building your phone case business. If your price is too high, it will drive customers to your competitors. However, an extremely low price can indicate that you’re using lower-quality materials.

The pricing you choose needs to convey the high quality of your designs while still being affordable for your target market . Look at your competitors for an initial starting point to see what kind of prices they’re offering. Then, think about the factors that might affect your pricing, such as how long it takes to make the items you want to sell and how many resources you’ll need to hire.

Once you recoup the costs of making the product with your pricing, you’ll need to think about how much of a profit you want to make. Check out these pricing strategy options for more guidance.

7. Build your online store

Outside of designing your phone cases, building your online store is one of the most exciting things you’ll do when creating a new business. There are tons of great ways to start selling online, but it makes sense to start with a store builder that’s well-known and easy to use, like Shopify .

As you’re working on your site, make sure to put up all the things that impact people’s perceptions of your business. Write engaging product descriptions , upload beautiful product images , and create noteworthy landing pages . Other things to consider include:

  • About and Contact Us pages to build site credibility
  • Checkout pages with multiple payment options
  • Legal information like privacy policies and terms and conditions
  • A blog or news page for content marketing
  • Pop-ups and slide-ins for sharing offers with customers

Shopify comes with a range of excellent features so you can dive straight into your site development process. You can even choose from a set of beautiful ecommerce themes to apply, so you know your site is going to look great.

8. Promote your phone case brand

Finally, it’s time to start bringing people to your business.

Marketing your phone case brand is the key to collecting as many loyal customers as possible. Some promotional strategies can cost a fortune, while others are more affordable. Here are some tips to keep it lean and mean:

Leverage social media

Share vibrant phone case designs that resonate with trending topics or pop culture. A case themed on a recent blockbuster movie, for instance, can draw a lot of organic interest.

Engage through email

Craft engaging newsletters showcasing your newest designs. Send out a monthly “Phone Case Spotlight” or special offers, ensuring subscribers eagerly await your emails.

Collaborate with influencers

Find a YouTuber or TikToker in the tech or fashion space. A single review or unboxing video of your unique phone case can bring thousands to your storefront.

Strategize social media advertising

Target specific groups, like comic book fans, with ads for cases that carry their favorite characters. Facebook or Instagram are ideal platforms for such targeted campaigns.

Invest in paid ad campaigns

Consider running Google Ads with compelling taglines such as, “Your Phone’s New Best Friend.” A well-placed ad can significantly boost visibility and sales.

How much does it cost to start a phone case business?

Launching a phone case business doesn’t always require a huge budget. Setting up your business name and getting the necessary permits might set you back about $400. Insurance, often overlooked, is vital; a basic policy can cost around $190.

Branding, even on a budget, makes a difference. With around $230, you can get professional-looking business cards and brochures. For your online presence, affordable or even free website platforms can help you start, costing approximately $500.

If you’re considering a dropshipping model, you eliminate inventory costs. However, you’ll want good design software. Open-source options or cost-effective subscriptions can come in at about $600. Overall, with strategic decisions, you might be launching your business for around $1,720.

Additionally, you can operate the business from a retail location too. And in that case, startup costs will be much higher. However, here we put an entire guideline for starting this business at home.

Is Mobile Cover Printing Business Profitable?

The smartphone population is increasing very fast globally. And this is an ancillary product of smartphones. So, we can expect an increasing demand for customized smartphone covers.

Additionally, the business demands a very small startup cost. Only you need to have a sublimation printing machine. You can use your own PC or laptop. Finally, this is a high profit-making business. You can expect a 200% gross profit from this business.

Here are the 5 Steps to Start Mobile Cover Printing Business

Broadly, the business has two different operations. These are creating the product and the second is the eCommerce operation. Here we put the details of both two steps.

1. Creating The Product

First of all, talk to a local business consultant to identify the licensing factors and tax liabilities. You must consider this before commencing the business.

Secondly, study the market and try to identify the products that have good demand.  As an example, 3D-printed covers have had a huge demand recently. Accordingly, craft a business plan for your business. Here you must consider your investment capacity, skill, and business size.

Determine a dedicated space for the operation at your home. Procure the printing machine and other raw materials. Additionally, you must procure the packaging consumables.

Finally, you will need to procure blank mobile cases from reliable suppliers. There are several different types of smartphone covers that are very popular.

2. Create a Business Plan

It is essential to create a business plan for your mobile cover printing venture. It works as a roadmap for the current and future course of activities of your business. If you are looking for funds, it is advised to hire professional business plan writers and get the job done.

3. Buy a Mobile Cover Printing Machine

If you are planning to have your own printing setup, you need to buy a mobile cover printing machine. The price of the machine will vary largely on the basis of production output. Contact nearest the machine supplier or check online marketplaces for the latest prices and features.

The cost of a new mobile cover printing machine will come to around $250 – $300 for small-scale production.

4. Creating The eCommerce Store

When you are starting a business from home, this is the most vital part of operating the business. In this process, you will manage the entire business from the eCommerce store .

First of all, get a domain name for your business. And you must procure a name that is relevant to your business. Register the domain name and take hosting to get live your site.

Next, the most important factor in choosing the right eCommerce platform. However, when choosing an eCommerce platform might be a fairly confusing task – especially if you aren’t from a technical or eCommerce background.

Broadly, there are two different types of options available. Either you can use managed hosted eCommerce platforms or an open-source content management system. And a managed hosted eCommerce platform is always easier to handle for a beginner.

After selecting the eCommerce platform, sign up with the company. And now is the time for establishing your store. Upload some sample images of smartphone covers. Attach price tag and delivery details.

And now your online mobile cover printing business is ready for operations.

5. Promote Your Mobile Cover Printing Business

You must promote your business both online and offline. And there are numerous low-cost ways of promoting the business.

Craft fairs and tradeshows are great options for promoting business offline. And online, you must have a blog with your eCommerce site.

How to Start Mobile Cover Printing Business?

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our lives; imagining life without them is difficult or even impossible. People are not hesitant to buy the newest, latest, slimmest, and shiniest phone out in the market. Also, to protect these phones from damage or make them look more appealing, they hunt for mobile phone covers. Or people may simply buy unique and interesting, printed mobile covers to give their old phone an upgrade. Mobile phone accessories have become a fashion statement, and this trend is nowhere to go.

The constantly rising popularity of mobile phone covers has led to an upward shift in demand for mobile phone accessories. This rising demand and fashion cult have given rise to a creative business opportunity with a high perceived value and low overhead for getting started.

In this article, we share tips on how to tap the opportunity in the mobile phone cover printing segment that leverages your creativity and nurtures your entrepreneurial passion. With low investment and even a small workspace, you can cater to the customers’ interests and make a good amount of money.

Benefits of starting a mobile cover business

Here are a host of benefits that are associated with the mobile cover printing business –

  • The small size and non-perishable inventory make it easy to handle and carry.
  • The cost of the inventory is very cheap, and buying in bulk can further reduce the cost.
  • Mobile covers have appeal in both the online market and offline kiosk.
  • With every new phone launch, there’s an opportunity to increase your consumer base.
  • This business has a decent profit margin and requires a low initial investment.
  • You can consider this as your part-time business too.

However, as the entry barriers are shallow in this space, there’s high competition, and the market is highly unorganised. To stay afloat, you need to have a creative mindset, entrepreneurial ability, and technical expertise. Here are the steps you should follow to start your mobile cover printing business journey –

1. Research About Your Idea Well

Before entering a market, first, understand it well. Detailed and well-defined research is very crucial for the success of your business. Deep and diligent research can help you enter into the most profitable deals and help you understand the business’ specifics. To discover the unknowns of your business, you can include the following questions in your research–

  • What’s motivating you to plunge into this business segment?
  • Who are the leaders of the market, and what is the USP of their products?
  • What are the initial and ongoing costs associated with the business?
  • What is the market size, and who will be your target customers?
  • How will your product be different from the competitors?

2. Make a Robust Plan

After gathering the essentials from your preliminary research, now it’s time to focus on the details. Here are three points which you have to finalise before investing your money –

a. Choose which kind of device you want to focus on

Research which models are most trending in the market or your locality and constantly upgrade your inventory with that model’s phone cover. Also, keep a tab on the new launches in the market and serve your customers the best phone covers for the same.

b. Types of phone cases

There are varied types of phone covers available in the market, each with its different function and cost. The most common types include slim and gel cases, bumper cases, folio or wallet cases, tough cases, fabric case, metal case, etc. While some of them provide great protection, others are visually appealing.

c. Name your brand

A strong brand identity is necessary for establishing who you are. Choose a suitable name for your business that conveys the value and uniqueness of your brand. Make sure to keep it short, simple, and easy to pronounce. With domain generators such as GoDaddy, you can easily find the best available domain name.

d. Chart your budget

Finance is necessary for the smooth functioning of any business. Budgeting will primarily answer the following questions-

  • What is the cost involved in opening a phone case business?

This includes the market research cost, license and permit fee paid to the government, the cost incurred for purchasing a heating press, infrastructure cost, etc.

  • What are the ongoing expenses?

This includes upkeep and machinery maintenance, employee salary, promotional expenses, shipping charges, raw material, rent for online sale fees, etc.

  • How much can you charge your customers?

Although this business permits you to have large profit margins, it depends on the phone case material you use for printing. Slim cases cost less in comparison to metal cases. Good quality material or customised printing has a higher perceived market value but also costs more.

3. Find a Manufacturer and Gather Your Machinery

To choose a manufacturer who can provide the phone cases, you may consider the following factors: the type of product manufactured, quality of the product, the price charged, manufacturing time, minimum order policy, and the shipping costs. Finding the correct manufacturer can help you maximise your profits.

Further, the machinery you require will include a heating press, sublimation moulds, white back case, transfer paper, laptops (optional).

4.  Establish and Promote Your Presence

Simply launching a store is not enough; to create better awareness about your product, you need to work on marketing and generating traffic to your store.

Here are a few effective methods that you can use to attract visitors –

  • Start with personal connections - Make sure to share your business idea with your personal connections even before you launch it. When you launch your business, they can help you promote it and be your first customers. Also, ask them questions like how often do they buy a phone cover? How much are they willing to spend on a cover? or What are the qualities they look for in a cover?
  • Take your product online - An E-Commerce store is vital to reach the masses at large. You can consider launching your website or choose to host your product on an E-commerce platform such as Amazon, Flipkart, etc.
  • Kiosks and exhibitions – If you consider having an offline store, then mall kiosks can be a great option to start your business. High traffic and low overhead expense make malls an attractive option. Further, never miss out on any fair or exhibition where you can display your creative designs.
  • Social media advertising - The strategy to effectively use social media includes focusing on platforms where you think your target audience is the most active. Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest are highly visual mediums; they can be great platforms to show off your designs and promote your business.
  • Influencer marketing - Advertising your business with people who have huge popularity and trust among the public can be a great way to get your phone cases in front of more people. Partnering with YouTubers, micro-celebrities, Instagrammers, etc., bring more engagement and sales conversion to your product.
  • Corporate promotional products – Every year, big companies buy bulk gifts for employees or need customised products for conferences and events. Partnering with such companies can help you drive big sales.
  • Run contests and giveaways – Run contests or giveaways on your social media accounts to share your products for a chance to win an attractive mobile cover . Or design contests asking people to design their phone covers and sell them in your store while giving a portion of profit to the winner.

Every new mobile phone paves the way for many new phone accessories that match with the model. Hence, innovation in the product, attracting consumers, and retaining them is the key to success in this business segment. Be diligent about new and trending designs and mobile phone launches in the market. Never hesitate to take customer reviews about what images they would like to see next. Have your expertise in customising mobile phone cover printing, as it can help you stand out in the market and see good profits.

Let us dive in:

How To Start A Home Printing Business

Certainly, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to start a printing business from home in 2024:

Plan In Advance For Your Printing Service Business

Before diving into the business, conduct thorough market research. Identify your target audience, understand their printing needs, and assess your competition. Create a comprehensive business plan outlining your services, pricing strategy, marketing approach, and long-term goals. Outline your strategies to ensure you are competitive and able to meet the needs of your target audience.

Pick a printing niche

There are several kinds of print products out there, and it is best to pick a focused niche and not try to please everyone at once. For instance, sign printing businesses are very different from companies that do stationery and brochures, thanks to web-to-print solutions.

Study the market for each niche, determine whether you have the resources and the capacity to meet the industry standards in that niche, and then choose. The pandemic has brought about a change in buying habits.

People are looking to place smaller volumes of order given the uncertainty surrounding their incomes. Web-to-print solutions can offer that.

Form A Legal Entity For Your Online Printing Services

Decide on a suitable legal structure for your business, such as a sole proprietorship, LLC, or corporation. Register your business name and obtain any necessary permits or licenses. Set up a business bank account to keep your personal and business finances separate. Additionally, create a business plan to help you organize and manage your company’s resources.

Choose A Name For Your Printing Service Shop

Select a unique and memorable name that reflects the essence of your printing business. Ensure that the name is available for domain registration if you plan to have an online presence. Keep it simple, easy to spell, and relevant to printing services.  Additionally, create a tagline that captures the essence of your branding, and use it throughout your marketing materials. Research the competition to gain an understanding of how other businesses in the industry are positioning themselves. This will help you create a unique and effective marketing strategy that will engage your target audience.

Determine What Printing Equipment You Will Need

Once you have a niche, you need to invest in equipment that will help you fulfill your target audiences’ demands. The easiest way to do this is by checking out your competitors’ websites to see what services they offer and how you can improve upon those offerings.

Then, do your research on the printing equipment you will need to fulfill that. While it is understandable not to want to invest too much upfront, bear in mind that what you buy now could make or break your business.

At this stage, you should also do your homework on any permits or licenses you may need for the equipment and web-to-print solutions , and get the documentation in place. This is necessary so that you do not have to face any legal battle in the future.

What Is a Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your print shop business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategies for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan

If you’re looking to start a print shop business or grow your existing print shop company, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your print shop business to improve your chances of success. Your print shop business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Print Shop Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a print shop business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans, and angel investors. When it comes to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to ensure that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings and bank loans are the most common funding paths for print shop companies.

Finish Your Business Plan Today!

How to write a business plan for a print shop business.

If you want to start a print shop business or expand your current one, you need a business plan. The guide below details the necessary information for how to write each essential component of your print shop business plan.

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your executive summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the kind of print shop business you are running and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a print shop business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of print shop businesses?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.

  • Give a brief overview of the print shop industry.
  • Discuss the type of print shop business you are operating.
  • Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers.
  • Provide a snapshot of your marketing strategy. Identify the key members of your team.
  • Offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Overview

In your company overview, you will detail the type of print shop business you are operating.

For example, you might specialize in one of the following types of print shop businesses:

  • Digital printing : This type of printing is one of the most cost-effective and fast printing processes available today. Electronic files and digital images replace the need for paper, press set-up and ink, which helps reduce the carbon footprint on the earth.
  • Offset lithography printing: Used for magazines, circulars, brochures and books, this type of print shop specializes in larger volumes and includes traditional methods of binding.
  • Screen printing: Any material that is not flat is a candidate for screen printing: shirts, hats, fabric bags, etc. Screen printing forces ink through a screening process that is replicated onto fabric or other materials used.
  • 3D printing: This type of printing is performed through design, initiated by a computer program, followed by the print process in a 3D printer. The 3D printer is calibrated and outfitted with special plastics to fulfill the specifications of the 3D computer program.

In addition to explaining the type of print shop business you will operate, the company overview needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to questions such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of printing projects completed, the amount of revenue earned, or reaching X number of clients served, etc.
  • Your legal business Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry or market analysis, you need to provide an overview of the print shop industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the print shop industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your marketing strategy, particularly if your analysis identifies market trends.

The third reason is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your print shop business plan:

  • How big is the print shop industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential target market for your print shop business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your print shop business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: individuals, schools, charitable organizations, corporations, and innovators.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of print shop business you operate. Clearly, individuals would respond to different marketing promotions than corporations, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, including a discussion of the ages, genders, locations, and income levels of the potential customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can recognize and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other print shop businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. Stores that house copy machines or overseas service companies may be examples of indirect competitors. You will want to mention any direct competition, as well.

For each direct competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What type of print shop business are they?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide bundled services including printing and binding?
  • Will you offer large 3D printing projects that your competition doesn’t?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a print shop business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of print shop company that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you provide cover design, book layout and digital printing to create a niche service for authors?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your plan, you are presenting the products and/or services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the site of your print shop company. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your print shop business located in a busy retail district, a business district, a standalone office, or purely online? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your print shop marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertise in local papers, radio stations and/or magazines
  • Reach out to websites
  • Distribute flyers
  • Engage in email marketing
  • Advertise on social media platforms
  • Improve the SEO (search engine optimization) on your website for targeted keywords

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your print shop business, including answering calls, planning and providing printed items or 3D printed items, billing customers and assisting with maintenance of equipment, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to book your Xth print project , or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your print shop business to a new city.

Management Team

To demonstrate your print shop business’ potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing print shop businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing a print shop business or successfully running a small co-op of screen printers.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you see 5 new customers per day, and/or offer discounted packaged pricing? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your print shop business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a print shop business:

  • Cost of equipment and office supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and equipment

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your office location lease or a list of corporations on a monthly printing contract.

Writing a business plan for your print shop business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will understand the print shop industry, your competition, and your customers. You will develop a marketing strategy and will understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful print shop business.

Bring your creativity and entrepreneurial abilities to the table while we bring our technical expertise. And let’s find out how to sell phone cases.

How to start a phone case business: An Overview

  • Conduct a Market Research
  • Create a Business Plan

Clear all The Legal Aspects of Starting a Phone Case Business

Find designs for your phone cases, define your brand identity, take your store online, choose printing method.

  • Launch and Promote Your Store

1. Conduct a Market Research

Successful business owners always start their journey with diligent research. Whatever it takes – talking with 50 people in the industry, reading every article available online, etc.; to gather as much information as possible. Here’s what your research plan must include:

Leaders of the Market – this includes studying a brand, company, or group that has the highest percentage of total revenue of the phone cases market. Study everything – what are they selling? How are they selling? what’s their marketing strategy, etc.

Market Size – this means finding out the number of people who might be interested in purchasing from you. This will help you create effective strategies that will help you in the long run.

Target market – you should have a clear idea about who you want to sell the phone cases to. Think about the groups that are most likely to purchase from you. For instance, teenagers might be your ideal customers looking for superhero cases. A working professional might look for a practical, and minimalist case design. Identifying a target customer base will help you take further decisions like choosing the design for the cover, design of the website, marketing strategy, etc.

Expert Tip: The key to sell phone cases online successfully is to identify a gap in the market. Look for potential customer pain points and introduce your product as a solution to those problems. That way, your brand will get noticed.

For this, you can start by identifying your competition and then analyze their strengths and weaknesses. This will give you a good idea of what you need (skills, ideas, strategies) to be successful.

2. Create a Business Plan

The previous step was all about gathering essentials. This part is where you will jump into the water to win the game. A business plan will help you give direction to your ideas . Here, you have to make some important decisions like choosing the type of phone case, naming your brand, setting a financial strategy.

1. Phone Models

Before choosing the type of phone cover you want to sell, you need to decide what phone models you want to support. For this, you need to see which phones are popular in your region. The best phone for 2021 includes iPhone12, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Note 20, and the OnePlus 9. There is no shortage of resources online that will help decide the right model.

You can even do keyword research to find out what people are demanding. Tools like Google’s Keyword Planner , Ahrefs , Keywords Everywhere , or KWFinder enable you to track the search volume.

(Do a Keyword Research to Get An Idea About What’s in Demand)

2. Types of Phone Cases

There are a host of options for types of phone cases. Some are tough cases which provide great protection while some are visually appealing. Here’s a list of popular types:

  • Silicon/Gel Black Cover – lightweight transparent or gel cover that you can customize with designs. These cases are flexible and provide good protection.
  • Folio Case – wallet-like cover which appeals to a certain age-group.
  • Plastic Case – budget-friendly and long-lasting cover that comes with a smooth glossy or matte finish.
  • Fabric Case – this cover is pleasant with style and suits fashion preferences. It’s lightweight, available in different colors and offers a firm grip.
  • Rubber Cover – rubber is resistant against scratching and provides a good grip. It’s cost-effective and comes in different designs and colors.
  • Metal Case – the classic metal cover which offers complete protection and looks good too.

Once you create a list of different types of phone cases, you can find out what’s trending right now using tools like Google Trends, which lets you compare the search volume of different queries.

(Tools like Google Trends Helps You Find Trending Phone Cases)

Platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, etc., are a great place to check what kinds of phone cases are getting the most attention.

Trending products with an added USP of product customization can be a deadly combo. Sell phone cases online using a product designer tool where your customers can customize their cases and covers. See how it will work with your store here.

3. Naming Your Brand

You might have already started thinking about this. Now it’s time to finalize the name. We suggest you choose a name that conveys the values and goals of your company. Make sure it is short, easy to pronounce, and, most importantly, unique. With the help of domain generators like GoDaddy, you can check the availability of the desired domain.

4. Planning your Budget

Budgeting is crucial to avoid early financial disasters. Having a financial plan will be of huge help when you are applying for a loan , hiring an employee, or promoting your business.

The overall cost of starting a phone case business depends on the business model you decide. However, a budget plan for a startup includes startup costs like infrastructure, fixed costs like best php hosting  fees, business insurance, variable expenses like shipping charges, transportation, raw materials, and so on.

If you do not want to build a website the traditional way, you have an option to make your phone case business live at a minimum cost with a web-to-print storefront . We know it’s very tempting to jump straight into selling products. But spend some time to make your online business legal to avoid any civil complications. Following are the essential business licenses if you wish to operate your business legally:

  • Business Operation License – it allows you to conduct business in your city, country, or state.
  • Sales Tax Registration – in most regions, retail operators need to collect sales tax, and this license will help you obtain a tax permit.
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN) – a tax ID number that identifies your business as a distinct tax entity.
  • Seller’s Permit – a license to sell goods online.

Expert Tip : If you are not sure that you can manage these legalities yourself, seek advice from a lawyer, accountant, or local economic development agency. They will help you identify all permits and licenses that apply to your business.

If you have an artistic flair, you can create your designs using Photoshop, Caseapp, or mockup generator websites. The second option is to reach out to professional designers on platforms like Dribbble or Fiver.

Apart from ready-made designs, you can even let your shoppers design your products by integrating a product designer tool. Let customizable phone cases be your biggest differentiator. Integrate a product designer tool to enable shoppers to design their phone cases.

Expert Tip : If you are going to create designs yourself before you finalize designs, it’s good to get feedback by posting your designs on platforms like Reddit, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.

As Jeff Bezos says, “Branding is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.” A strong brand identity is crucial for establishing who you are.

Here are 4 key benefits of branding:

Customer recognition – while shopping, if shoppers find something that is eye-catching, whether it’s typography, logo, or color, they are likely to stop scrolling and explore what you have to offer.

Customer loyalty – a strong name or logo will keep your company in the mind of customers. The more they remember/recognize you, the more often they will come back.

Improves credibility – having a strong brand identity will create your image as an established business, both with the customers and within the industry.

Differentiation – as somebody who is just starting, brand identity will help you stand out from your competitors.

What to include in your brand identity strategy?

  • A simple memorable logo that goes on your website, social media handles, and packaging.
  • Typography that is classic, clean, and timeless.
  • Symbols and photographs that set well with the vision of your brand.
  • Choose a color that reflects what you do. Because remember, colors are powerful and people have psychological ties with every color.

Expert Tip : Before you begin with this step, be very clear with your brand’s story, vision, values, and personality. Once you have that sorted, you can easily build an identity for the customers.

You can take your business online with minimum setup costs and zero inventory by choosing a print-on-demand business model. Here’s how it works:

If you want to sell phone covers online using print on demand, you need to build an eCommerce website. Popular eCommerce platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, etc., will allow you to manage online sales operations.

Today, these eCommerce platforms go way beyond buying and selling online. Cloud-based platforms integrate both front-end and back-end to provide scalable and customizable functionality to your store. The choice of the platform will depend on your budget and requirements. But make sure you do proper research before making a choice.

Once you establish a store online, your goal will be to attract customers. This is a tough task; we know that. And therefore, we suggest that you offer personalization. Businesses online are offering a personalized experience where customers can buy products customized for them.

One way to offer a customized experience is by giving your customers the freedom to design their phone cases. You can do this by integrating a product design tool to your eCommerce Store.

With the help of multiple features of the tool, customers can craft creative designs on the mobile cover. You can even charge a premium price for this. Following are the benefits you can expect by integrating a design tool:

  • Millennials comprise a huge portion of online shoppers and they love customized products. You will see a massive crowd of young buyers in your store if you give users the liberty to design.
  • Shoppers get more attached to personalized products. Therefore, they are likely to return to you. This way you increase sales.
  • You are likely to get a boost in Google rankings and gain a strong online presence.

Mobile Cover Design Software Features:

  • Background Color Management
  • Multiple Design Areas
  • Image Masking
  • Custom Templates
  • 10,000+ Customizable Clipart
  • Custom Image Upload
  • Image Effects/Editing

Not just your customers, as a business, you equally enjoy the benefits of using our designer software. You can set custom pricing, manage printing methods, add warning messages, control editing, and more. Know more about how a designer software can benefit your business.

Expert Tip : 70% of buying experiences are based on how the customers feel about the treatment the brand provides. Product personalization has that potential to provide a unique experience. Make sure your business has something unique to offer.

Printing method depends on both design type and quantity. If the design involves many images, colors, and patterns, you will need a method which can accommodate the details. Moreover, if you are going to print in bulk, choose a method that is suitable for bulk printing. Checkout the types of phone case printing:

Expert Tip : Before you finalize a printing method, look at some samples and pay attention to every detail. Always double check the final print to ensure it’s right for you.

Finding a Manufacturer

If you are new to the phone case industry, you might find it difficult to hunt a manufacturer. So, we have made your task easy by giving you some options. (a) You can find possible manufacturers from searchable directories like Thomasnet.com, (b) check online directories like Alibaba, (c) do what everybody does – Google.

Things to keep in mind while choosing a manufacturer:

  • Product – choose a manufacturer who is willing to provide the type of products you want and not the one who tricks you into buying what they have.
  • Quality – there is no need to explain how important quality is. Go through information on material type and process before signing a contract.
  • Price – make sure you are paying the amount that is standard in the market.
  • Timing – ask your manufacturer about the lead time and manufacturing time. This will give you a clear idea about when to place your order.
  • Minimum Order Policy – check with the manufacturer if they have any such policy. Most manufacturers do not accept an order less than the prescribed quantity.
  • Sample Price – check with the manufacturer if you will get a free sample or you have to pay any amount.

This procedure could be time consuming but is worth it. Contact potential manufacturers personally and ask every question you have. Once you have a list of preferred manufacturers, prioritize based on the above metrics.

Expert Tip : Always have one manufacturer as a backup. So, if something goes wrong, your business will keep going.

Dropshipping for your business

One of the easiest ways to source your products is dropshipping. Dropshipping is where you choose a manufacturer, and they will ship your phone cases directly to your customers on your behalf.

Whether you choose the dropshipping business model or build a website from scratch, you can offer an added USP of customized phone cases with the help of the Brush Your Ideas product designer tool.

Launch and Promote

Now that you have the product, manufacturer, and an online store, it’s time to launch and market your business.

Here are some popular marketing methods that you need to know:

1. Search Engine Marketing

This is the practice of using SEO or paid advertisements to appear on search engine result pages. SEO is all about earning the top position in the search results by creating relevant content for a keyword. While paid ads give you the opportunity to put your ad in front of the customer who is looking to buy a phone cover.

2. Social Media Marketing

Here you use social media platforms to connect with your customers and promote your brand and products. The strategy to effectively use social media includes focusing on one or two platforms that you think your target audience is active on. In your case, we suggest Instagram and Pinterest as they are popular among Millennials. Also, these two platforms are highly visual. So, phone case designs would work well here. Secondly, create a social media posting plan which includes information on the type of content you wish to share – promotional, informative, entertaining, etc.

3. Influencer Marketing

Customers consider reviews and ratings from people with popularity and authority. 40% of people say they’ve purchased an item online after seeing it used by an influencer on Instagram, Twitter, or YouTube. To begin with, you can have an influencer share your product or write a post.

Expert Tip : The best way to keep your business going is to provide exceptional customer service. Satisfied customers are your brand ambassadors. Once they have a positive experience, they will spread the word.

AT&T cellular service restored after daylong outage; cause still unknown

thumbnail

  • A cellular outage Thursday hit thousands of AT&T users in the United States, disrupting calls and text messages as well as emergency services in major cities including San Francisco.

About 58,000 incidents were reported around noon ET, according to data from outage-tracking website Downdetector.com.

  • Shares of AT&T were down about 2% Thursday following the outages.

A cellular outage Thursday hit thousands of AT&T users in the United States, disrupting calls and text messages as well as emergency services in major cities including San Francisco. The company said service was restored to all affected customers shortly after 3 p.m. ET.

"Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future," the company said in a statement.

AT&T said late Thursday that based on an initial review, the outage was "caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack." The company will continue to assess the outage.

AT&T, which put up a website for system updates , did not say how many customers were affected by Thursday's outage. The FCC said on X that it was investigating the incident and was in contact with AT&T and safety authorities .

Shares of AT&T closed 2.41% lower Thursday.

Phones affected by the outage displayed zero service bars in the top right corner of the device or the letters SOS. Customers were still able to make calls by enabling Wi-Fi calling.

A spike in outages began around 4:00 a.m. ET and peaked at around 74,000 reported incidents at 8:30 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector.

The AT&T outage affected people's ability to reach emergency services by dialing 911, a post on social media platform X from the San Francisco Fire Department said.

"We are aware of an issue impacting AT&T wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 911)," the fire department said.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a post on X that the city could receive and make outbound 911 calls but that AT&T customers in the area had reported issues.

"We have received calls from AT&T customers that their cellular phones are in SOS mode. Please direct all inquiries to restore service to AT&T," Dickens said.

The Massachusetts State Police said that people were flooding their 911 center with calls trying to determine if the service worked from their cell phones.

"Please do not do this. If you can successfully place a non-emergency call to another number via your cell service then your 911 service will also work," the state police said in a post on X.

Users of Verizon and T-Mobile reported a few thousand outages each as of 10:00 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector.

The reports were likely due to calls made trying to connect with other networks, both companies said.

"Downdetector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks," T-Mobile said in an emailed statement.

AT&T Says Service Is Restored After Widespread Cellular Outage

White House officials said the incident was under investigation, but it did not appear to be a cyberattack. Verizon and T-Mobile said their networks were operating normally.

Jenny Gross reported from London and David McCabe reported from Washington.

AT&T said on Thursday that it had fully restored service to its wireless network after a widespread outage temporarily cut off connections for users across the United States for many hours, the cause of which was still under investigation.

The outage, which affected people in cities including Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York, was first reported around 3:30 a.m. Eastern time, according to Downdetector.com , which tracks user reports of telecommunication and internet disruptions. At its peak, the site listed around 70,000 reports of disrupted service for the wireless carrier.

Multiple government agencies said they were looking into the incident, although the Biden administration told reporters that AT&T said there was no reason to think it was a cyberattack.

AT&T did not disclose the scope of the outage, nor the reason for it. When the outage first began on Thursday morning, the company listed the cause as “maintenance activity.”

Jim Greer, an AT&T spokesman, apologized in a statement confirming service was restored and said the company was “taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future.”

The outage underscored the importance of connectivity to daily life as individuals and businesses were cut off from communications and the ability to use mobile apps. AT&T advised consumers they could make calls over Wi-Fi and sought to respond to angry customers online. Many phones showed an “SOS” symbol on their screen, signaling they could only make emergency calls, while local governments offered alternate ways to reach 911.

Reports of outages on Downdetector began to fall midmorning, and at one point AT&T’s website showed that outages were limited to users in California , though users in other states were still reporting issues. Cricket, which is owned by AT&T, also reported that its users were experiencing wireless service interruptions and said it was working to restore service.

Reports also surfaced early Thursday that FirstNet, the network AT&T maintains for emergency services personnel, had experienced outages, but AT&T said around 10:30 a.m. that the network was fully operational.

Verizon experienced 3,000 reports of outages at one point on Thursday and T-Mobile about half that. Both companies said in statements that their networks were operating normally.

“Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier,” Verizon said. “We are continuing to monitor the situation.”

In an email, T-Mobile said that it did not experience an outage. “Downdetector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks.”

Officials in Washington said they were working to understand the cause of the outage. A spokesman for the Federal Communications Commission said its inquiry was being handled by its Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, which was in touch with AT&T as well as other providers.

John Kirby, a National Security Council spokesman, said on a call with reporters on Thursday that the Biden administration was told “that AT&T has no reason to think this was a cybersecurity incident,” although he added that they would not be certain until an investigation had been completed.

Mr. Kirby said that, in addition to the F.C.C., the Department of Homeland Security and the F.B.I. were collaborating with technology companies to investigate the outage.

The F.B.I. said in a statement it was in touch with AT&T and would respond accordingly if any malicious activity was found.

Throughout the day, cities urged residents to find alternate ways of reaching emergency or municipal services, like landlines or phones connected to Wi-Fi. The City of Upper Arlington, Ohio , said the fire department might not be notified of fire alarms because of the outage. It urged that any fire alarm be followed up with a 911 call.

The San Francisco Fire Department said on social media that it was aware of an issue affecting AT&T users who were trying to call 911. “We are actively engaged and monitoring this,” the fire department said. “If you are an AT&T customer and cannot get through to 911, then please try calling from a landline.”

The Massachusetts State Police said on social media on Thursday morning that 911 call centers across the state had been flooded with calls from people checking to see if the emergency service worked from their phones. “Please do not do this,” the police said. “If you can successfully place a non-emergency call to another number via your cell service then your 911 service will also work.”

Even in less extreme circumstances, the outage complicated the many elements of life that have come to rely on a reliable connection to the internet.

Staff at the First Watch restaurant in Dania Beach, Fla., had to turn away breakfast customers for a time while the outage prevented them from processing payments.

Debra Maddow, who lives in southwest Houston, said that she first noticed something was off after 7 a.m., when she went to check traffic and Google Maps was offline. Later, she visited a Starbucks to make an urgent call through its free Wi-Fi, she said.

“I’m really frustrated that they’re not telling us anything,” Ms. Maddow said in a phone interview over Wi-Fi. She said she tried to call AT&T for an update, but after a long time on hold, the call was dropped.

Victor Mather , John Keefe , Zolan Kanno-Youngs and Adam Goldman contributed reporting.

AT&T says cell service fully restored after major outage disrupts its mobile network

Customer reports of at&t wireless outages peaked at over 73,000 around 8:15 a.m. texas cities were particularly hard hit..

The cellular outage hit all carriers, but especially Dallas-based AT&T.

By Lana Ferguson , Maria Halkias and Irving Mejia-Hilario

7:09 AM on Feb 22, 2024 CST — Updated at 8:50 AM on Feb 22, 2024 CST

Sitting outside AT&T’s Dallas headquarters in the company’s signature Discovery District, small business owner Roxie Reese had a moment to reflect on the disruptive morning she and thousands of other wireless customers nationwide awoke to Thursday.

Reese had a morning appointment and grabbed her cellphone in a rush.

“I didn’t realize until after I left my house that I had no service,” said Reese, owner and founder of DFW Lash University. “I made it to my destination but I didn’t know where I was going. So it made me run behind. It’s a reminder that phones are a resource I take for granted because when it’s not available, it definitely makes life harder.”

Shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, AT&T said it had fully restored wireless service to all customers, including the critical FirstNet network used by emergency services nationally. The FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security were reported to be investigating why wireless subscribers lost service.

“Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future,” the telecommunications giant said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News .

Reports of outages to AT&T’s mobile service started around 2 a.m. and meant many Americans were unable to place calls, send texts or access the internet when they awoke. By 8:15 a.m. Dallas time, over 73,000 AT&T customers in major cities like Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago had reported cellular outages to Downdetector.com , a website that tracks service problems by users.

In all, AT&T customers filed over 1.5 million outage reports on Downdetector.

The problem even cascaded to other cellular carriers whose customers were believed to be trying to reach AT&T users.

AT&T did not provide a reason for the system failure.

At the White House, national security spokesman John Kirby played down the possibility of a cyberattack.

”Right now, we’re being told that AT&T has no reason to think that this was a cybersecurity incident,” he told reporters at midday. “But … we won’t know until an investigation has been completed. It’s good that the vast majority of customers have had their service restored. Obviously, we’ve got to do spade work to figure out what happened.”

Bloomberg reported the federal government is investigating whether the outage was caused by a cyberattack, citing two anonymous U.S. officials familiar with the situation.

Kristen Hanich, director of research at Addison-based research firm Parks Associates, said any number of potential issues could have been the cause.

“It could be anything from authentication issues to hardware failure or cloud configuration errors or cyber or other reasons,” she said. “Time will tell, and we are closely monitoring the story.”

Texas cities appeared to be particularly hard hit.

AT&T is the dominant wireless carrier in Texas, with 34% of the market, according to Parks Associates. Nationally, AT&T ranks third behind Verizon and T-Mobile with a 22% market share. It has about 87 million wireless subscribers.

Besides the consumer impact, AT&T’s emergency response network, FirstNet, also suffered disruptions. CNN reported AT&T’s network had seen sporadic outages over the previous few days, including a temporary 911 outage in some parts of the southeastern U.S. Several local governments around the U.S. said Thursday’s outage disrupted services.

San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management said in a statement on X , Thursday morning its 911 center remained operational but that many AT&T customers were unable to reach the emergency line because of the outages. It suggested people call from a landline or find someone with a rival’s service to dial 911.

The outage didn’t have a major impact on North Texas police departments.

“The Dallas Police Department is aware of the reported outage and is monitoring the situation,” the department said in a statement. “The department has not been impacted by the reported outage.”

The department’s 911 communications and other systems were functional, the statement said.

Fort Worth police said on X that its 911 call center also wasn’t affected

We are aware that there is a cellular outage affecting AT&T and some other mobile customers. However, this outage has not affected the 911 Call Center. We are still available for your emergency needs. — Fort Worth Police (@fortworthpd) February 22, 2024

“We are still available for your emergency needs,” its post said.

Frisco police advised residents that even if a cellphone is showing SOS, it should still be able to call 911.

A nationwide service outage affecting multiple cell phone providers appears to be slowly resolving. Those with phones still showing SOS should be able to reach 9-1-1 if needed. Matt Zavadsky, a spokesperson with MedStar, which provides emergency medical services to Fort Worth and surrounding areas, said the organization’s FirstNet system “became intermittent/non-functional” about 2:30 a.m. That caused MedStar to lose the ability to see its units on its computer system and it couldn’t use automated navigation to calls.

During that time, MedStar used radio dispatching and map books in the ambulances instead.

Other major entities in North Texas and across the state reported normal operations Thursday. ERCOT spokeswoman Trudi Webster said the state’s electric grid was operating normally.

DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field also saw no impact. Autonomous trucking companies Aurora and Kodiak and public hospital system, Parkland Health, reported no disruptions as well.

Some retailers seemingly anticipated such a problem.

H-E-B spokeswoman Mabrie Jackson said the popular grocery store’s point of sales systems don’t depend on WiFi, but store employees were sent outside to curbside pickup spaces to help customers whose cell phones were inoperable.

Other carriers besides AT&T were affected. Cricket Wireless had over 11,000 outages, Downdetector.com reported. Verizon had about 3,000 outages and T-Mobile more than 1,000. Boost Mobile had about 450 outages.

Verizon and T-Mobile both reported their users encountered difficulties trying to connect with customers on affected networks.

“We did not experience an outage,” T-Mobile said in a statement. “Our network is operating normally.”

User reports on Downdetector about a T-Mobile outage, the company added, “is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks.”

Verizon said it also was unaffected.

“Verizon’s network is operating normally,” Verizon told CNN in a statement. “Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier. We are continuing to monitor the situation.”

Previous outages

It’s not the first time AT&T has suffered a widespread outage. In 2008, the company dealt with an extensive wireless internet failure in the U.S. Northeast. In that incident, a glitch in the way the company’s network was routing traffic was identified as the culprit and the service failure was relatively short-lived.

In 2020, AT&T internet and phone service was knocked out in Nashville by an explosion in the city’s downtown area.

T-Mobile also has been hit with widespread outages, including one last February and one in 2020 that prompted the FCC to launch an investigation.

“In my experience, this type of outage can negatively impact financial results in the quarter in which it occurs and cause short-term lost goodwill with customers,” David Heger, an analyst at Edward D. Jones & Co., said in an email. “However, it does not have a longer term impact on the business.”

Bloomberg Intelligence analysts John Butler and Hunter Sacco wrote in a note that AT&T could take a reputational hit from the outage. “... Network reliability likely plays a big role in customers’ choice of a provider,” they wrote.

Business.org’s 5 best business cell phone plans

At&t: best full-featured plans.

Looking for a broad choice of bells and whistles? As a telecom behemoth, AT&T has plenty of cell phone features and packages to offer businesses—around 20 plan variations, small to large. All plans include free US roaming, unlimited talk and text messages, as well as unlimited texting outside of the country. Basic features like call forwarding, voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, and conference calling also come standard with all AT&T business cell phone plans, along with bring-your-own-phone support.

AT&T's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Business Unlimited plan prices start at $30 a month per line when you sign up for 6+ lines, or $60 a month for one line. Data is unlimited, but speeds may slow down after reaching the GB included in each plan.

AT&T business plans can also accommodate up to 10 lines per account, and they come fully loaded with perks like AT&T ActiveArmor SM mobile security and Video Management. Video Management automatically optimizes streaming video on your phone to 480p so you can watch webinars on the go without dealing with a blurry picture.

Each plan also includes a decent array of iOS and Android smartphone options and even a few good old flip phones. Users can save money when bundling AT&T-owned DIRECTV services (because, again, telecom behemoth). Military veterans can also qualify for a 25% discount on Business Unlimited plans.

Users are eligible for a discount if they elect for autopay and paperless billing, but this discount is only applied until after two pay periods. We don't know why the discount cannot be applied earlier in the billing process, but we do find it frustrating.

T-Mobile: Best flexible plans

Not sure exactly what you’ll need in a mobile plan besides future adaptability? T-Mobile, the third-largest wireless service in the US, offers three business plans, all packed with unique features that set T-Mobile apart from the rest. The German-owned company has also earned a reputation for stellar customer service and was the first to eliminate annual contracts (an idea that stuck—none of the plans reviewed on this page require contracts). In April 2018, the company announced its intention to merge with Sprint under the T-Mobile banner.

T-Mobile's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *Price available with 6+ lines

All of T-Mobile’s Business cell phone plans offer the same basic features:

  • Unlimited talk and text
  • Unlimited 5G and 4G LTE data on their network
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot
  • Scam Shield
  • Unlimited calling and texting to Mexico & Canada
  • Unlimited video streaming

In addition, all T-Mobile Business plans include DIGITS, an app that allows you to access up to five phone numbers on a single device. That means you could answer calls to your work number and personal number on one device—no more packing two phones in your bag every day. DIGITS also lets you share your phone number across multiple devices, so you can answer on your phone, smartwatch, tablet, or computer.

T-Mobile’s Business plans cover up to 12 lines. If you need more than 12 lines, you’ll need to sign up for the Enterprise Phone Plan (13+ lines). This includes a fixed rate of $285 per month for 13 lines, plus $25 per month for each additional line.

T-Mobile plans also allow bring-your-own-device convenience, or you can buy phones upfront with a single payment (there are nearly 40 iOS and Android phones to choose from).

I couldn't find solid info verifying this pricing so I'm not sure if it's still accurate

Now that T-Mobile and Sprint have been merged for almost six months, some significant changes have taken effect. T-Mobile’s website is now the only place businesses can sign up for Sprint or T-Mobile business phone accounts.

Sprint still has an active business website for previous users but all new plans will be sold by T-Mobile on its website.

Verizon: Best growing business plans

Serving over 150 million customers, Verizon isn’t just big, it’s BIG. Such a mobile mammoth might not seem like the obvious choice for a small business, but for what it lacks in a personalized customer service reputation, Verizon more than makes up for by offering every cell phone feature there is, as well as dominant US, and near-dominant global, coverage. Like McDonald’s and Marvel movies, Verizon is everywhere.

Verizon's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *With 5+ lines

While business owners can get business cell phone plans with limited data, we recommend choosing an unlimited plan if you have multiple employees (or do a lot of work via cell phone).

Verizon’s Business Unlimited cell phone plans are scalable for multiple employees. With plans starting at just $30 per line, Verizon Business Unlimited plans are an attractive option, whether you’re running a tiny company with no expansion plans, a medium-sized business with an eye toward growth, or a large enterprise with heavy cell phone requirements.

Verizon Business Unlimited Plus and Pro plans also include a TravelPass (2–4 days per month), so you can do business around the world. Each plan also includes unlimited calling and texting to Mexico and Canada.

Verizon doesn’t skimp on device choices either. There are nearly 100 iOS and Android phones and tablets available—including the Verizon Orbic Speed, a mobile hotspot device that can connect 10 devices to an 802.11 ac Wi-Fi network.

If your company requires truly “unlimited” cell phone service and scalability to grow, and is in the position to pay for functionality with frills, Verizon Business Unlimited is the way to go. Bare-bones operations, however, might want to look elsewhere.

Each of our recommendations has its strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes the most difficult part about finding a phone system is determining exactly what you need and don't need. The best place to start is separating your needs between installing a new system, replacing a system, or expanding an existing system.

If you are having trouble sorting out exactly what your phone needs are, use this tool to help you understand what the best options are for your unique needs.

MintMobile: Most affordable plans

We are sure you’ve seen the commercials with Ryan Reynolds talking about this phone carrier business with a fox logo called Mint Mobile. In fact, a lot of Mint customers were drawn to Mint because of Ryan Reynolds's Hollywood looks, but that’s not the only thing Mint has to offer.

Mint is inexpensive and transparent, compared to other cell phone carriers with hidden fees and seemingly random regulations.

MintMobile's business cell phone plans

These are the prices for new customers and will last up to three months. After the third month, you are eligible to sign up for a 3, 6, or 12-month contract on one of the tiered plans, all $35/mo/user or under, which is astronomically less than other providers.

MintMobile is no fuss, and you really do feel like you must be tricking the rest of the world with its pricing. The only issue is that MintMobile is an online company, and coverage is not completely everywhere yet. There are still some coverage gaps in the West, namely Nevada, Idaho, and Arizona. If you live east of the Rocky Mountains, you are good to go!

Teltik: Best perks plans

If you’re a strapped startup, New Jersey’s Teltik can get you up and running on the cheap. Teltik is a reseller service operating on T-Mobile’s 4G LTE and 5G network, meaning it can offer the reliability and reach of a giant provider at smaller-company prices. Teltik also has the advantage of being completely US-based, with 24/7 local customer service that’s not outsourced overseas.

Teltik's business cell phone plans

3 more (non-business) cell phone plans reviewed by business.org.

Teltik appears to have a dozen plans, but they’re mostly just variations of the essential plan that offers all the expected basics. Not coincidentally, the features mirror those of T-Mobile, as they’re on the same network.

The most basic plan starts at $20 a month and includes unlimited calling and texting, mobile hotspot service, and unlimited data—with a 2 GB cap on 5G speeds (meaning your speed gets throttled to 128 Kbps if you use more than 2 GB of data in a month). From there, you can upgrade your plan to include more 4G or 5G data and more mobile hotspot data. Upgraded plans cost anywhere from $30 to $40 per month, and they all include one cloud-phone VoIP line—perfect for small businesses looking to save on all their telecommunications needs.

One distinctly entertaining feature (pun intended) of Teltik’s business plans? You get unlimited media streaming from over 40 music services (including Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music) and more than 100 video services (including YouTube, Netflix, and any other channel you can think of). That means you can stream as much TV as you want without it eating into your data. It’s almost as if Teltik doesn’t want you to get any work done.

Another thing you need to know: Teltik doesn’t sell phones. Instead, the company operates on a strict bring-your-own-device basis. Any unlocked phone will work with its network, as will any T-Mobile device, of course. However, you will have to spend $10 plus shipping and handling to buy a new SIM card for each of your devices (unless they’ve already got brand-new, unused T-Mobile SIM cards).

Boost Mobile

The takeaway

Assess your company’s current cell phone usage and projected future needs before diving into any plan. What looks like a great deal could turn out to be more than you actually need—or you may have initially underestimated your business’s cell phone requirements. Also, if your company has both cell phone and regular office phone needs, look into bundling. The larger telecom providers offer both types of phone coverage, and bundling services is an easy way to save money in the long run.

Don’t want to carry around separate phones for work and personal calls? With the right VoIP service, you don’t have to. Check out our favorite business VoIP providers to see which ones offer on-the-go business phone capabilities.

Business cell phone plan FAQs

If you have several employees working outside of the office on a regular basis, desk-bound phones obviously aren’t going to work for them. Some may be only calling and texting while others will be checking email, using GPS navigation, and accessing the internet for work, but a cell phone is a must for employees in the field.

If you’re a one-person operation accountable to only yourself, you could get by with a personal cell plan. Keeping track of multiple employees’ hours, data, and providers, however, would be an extra headache you don’t need. For streamlining and collaboration purposes, a business cell phone plan would be the easier route.

Most of the plans we’ve reviewed here offer unlimited data—domestically, at least—so hitting the data ceiling won’t likely be an issue. But if you want to forecast how much data your business uses every month, or want to figure out how much premium data you’ll need, providers make data plan estimators available on their websites. Or you could use a third-party calculator app.

BYOD stands for bring your own device . Another common term is BYOP for bring your own phone . This means that employees are using their personal phones, tablets, or laptops on their own carrier plans for work or that they’ve put those devices on the company’s plan. The upside? It’s less expensive than buying devices. The downside? Extra security concerns.

In the annoying absence of Wi-Fi, you can use a cell phone signal to connect a wireless device to the internet by switching on the mobile hotspot option and simply treating it like a Wi-Fi router. For multiple device connections, a dedicated hotspot (such as Verizon’s Orbic Speed ) can provide a faster, and more stable, connection.

AT&T outage resolved, authorities investigating

By Aditi Sangal and Catherine Thorbecke , CNN

AT&T says it has restored wireless service

A cell tower in Los Angeles is pictured on February 22.

AT&T said in a statement that it has now resolved the day's massive service outage.

"We have restored wireless service to all our affected customers. We sincerely apologize to them. Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future," the company statement said.

No indication of malicious cyber activity so far, US cyber official says

From CNN's Sean Lyngaas

A US cyber official tracking the AT&T outage told CNN there has so far been no indication that the outage was caused by malicious cyber activity, but the investigation is ongoing.

Fewer than 5,000 AT&T customers still reporting outages

From CNN's Catherine Thorbecke

As of approximately 2 pm ET, fewer than 5,000 AT&T customers were still reporting outages, according to self-reported data tracked by DownDetector.

The FCC says it is investigating the outage

The Federal Communications Commission confirmed Thursday afternoon that it is investigating the AT&T outage.

“We are aware of the reported wireless outages, and our Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau is actively investigating,” the FCC said in a statement Thursday afternoon that was posted on X.

“We are in touch with AT&T and public safety authorities, including FirstNet, as well as other providers," the agency added.

WH: Federal agencies still working to get to bottom of AT&T outages

From CNN’s Kevin Liptak

National Security spokesperson John Kirby attends a news briefing at the White House in Washington, DC, on February 15.

The White House says federal agencies are in touch with AT&T about network outages Thursday but that it doesn't have all the answers yet on what exactly transpired that led to the interruptions.

National Security spokesman John Kirby said the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI were looking into the matter and working with partners in the tech industry to "see what we can do from a federal perspective to lend a hand to their investigative efforts to figure out what happened here."

Kirby said that work was still ongoing.

"The bottom line is we don't have all the answers to that. I mean, this just happened earlier today. And so we're working very hard to see if we can get to the ground truth of exactly what happened," he said.

Tens of thousands of AT&T customers still say they have no service

As of approximately 12:30 pm ET, some 25,000 AT&T customers were still reporting outages, per data compiled by tracking site DownDetector . (DownDetector, notably, only tracks self-reported outages).

Still, the latest figure is a steep fall from the peak of some 74,000 AT&T customers reporting outages at around 9 am ET.

The DownDetector data indicates the widespread outage began around 4 am ET.

Telecom experts tell CNN that outages typically happen for mundane reasons

From CNN's Brian Fung

A "No Service" message is seen on an iPhone in Atlanta during an AT&T outage on February 22.

While Thursday's AT&T outage grabbed national headlines, outages do happen and usually for mundane reasons, several telecom experts told CNN.

Common causes include construction-related digging that punctures fiber optic cables and software misconfigurations that can lead to interruptions, said TJ Kennedy, a public safety communications expert.

"I can't think of every incident in the last few years, but I can think of things related to routers, things related to backhaul, things related to software," Kennedy said. "This has happened across all major carriers, multiple times in the past few years alone."

Thursday's outage could have been caused by human errors in AT&T's cloud-based networking system, said Lee McKnight, an associate professor at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies.

"The dirty secret of telecom networks these days is they are just a bunch of wires and towers connected to the cloud ,"  McKnight said. "Someone making a mistake, and others on their team — and their automated tools — not catching it, is quite common in cloud computing."

The FCC will almost certainly investigate the outage, experts tell CNN

The Federal Communications Commission will almost certainly investigate this week's incident, multiple experts said. The FCC requires carriers to report information linked to network disruptions.

"The carriers are required to report their outage numbers over time, and the commission can track the number of consumers and cell sites down and things like that," said a former FCC official.

Telecom carriers have every reason to fix any outages quickly, said the former FCC official, "because it creates black eyes for the brand."

"Everybody's incentives are aligned," the former official said. "The FCC is going to want to know what caused it so that lessons can be learned. And if they find malfeasance or bad actions or, just poor quality of oversight of the network, they have the latitude to act."

Gov. Ron DeSantis: "Think about the implications if something like that happened on a much grander scale"

From CNN’s Rebekah Riess

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks at a press conference in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, on February 22.

Florida Governor and former GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis opened an unrelated press conference on Thursday with comments regarding the ongoing AT&T network outage, affecting thousands of customers.

The governor said his office had been in touch with AT&T, who told them they were working to put customers back online, but were focusing on restoring emergency services. DeSantis said AT&T did not speak about what had caused the outage.

“You think about just your daily life, like having cell phones, honestly, it's like, imagine if we had like an EMP attack or something like that would end up happening this country,” DeSantis said. “It’s not necessarily a good thought, because you think you're just so naturally reliant on having cell service (…) so it's a little bit jarring and think about the implications if something like that happened on much grander scale.”

AT&T Says the Outage to Its US Cellphone Network Was Not Caused by a Cyberattack

AT&T says the hourslong outage to its U.S. cellphone network appeared to be the result of a technical error, not a malicious attack

AT&T said the hourslong outage to its U.S. cellphone network Thursday appeared to be the result of a technical error, not a malicious attack.

The outage knocked out cellphone service for thousands of its users across the U.S. starting early Thursday before it was restored.

AT&T blamed the incident on an error in coding, without elaborating.

“Based on our initial review, we believe that today’s outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack,” the Dallas-based company said.

Outage tracker Downdetector noted that outages, which began at about 3:30 a.m. ET, peaked at around 73,000 reported incidents. AT&T had more than 58,000 outages around noon ET, in locations including Houston, Atlanta and Chicago. The carrier is the country's largest, with more than 240 million subscribers.

By 9 p.m. ET, the reports on AT&T's network were fewer than 1,000.

Cricket Wireless, which is owned by AT&T, had more than 9,000 outages at one point but the reports had also tailed off later in the afternoon. Users of other carriers, including Verizon and T-Mobile, also reported issues but those companies said their networks were operating normally and the problems were likely stemming from customers trying to connect to AT&T users.

During the outage, some iPhone users saw SOS messages displayed in the status bar on their cellphones. The message indicates that the device is having trouble connecting to their cellular provider’s network, but it can make emergency calls through other carrier networks, according to Apple Support.

The Federal Communications Commission contacted AT&T about the outage and the Department of Homeland Security and FBI were also looking into it, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

The FBI acknowledged it had been in touch with AT&T. “Should we learn of any malicious activity we will respond accordingly,” the agency said.

The outage also raised concerns on Capitol Hill.

“We are working to assess today’s disruption in order to gain a complete understanding of what went wrong and what can be done to prevent future incidents like this from occurring,” said a statement issued by Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a Washington Republican who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Ohio Republican Bob Latta, chair of the Communications and Technology Subcommittee.

Associated Press writers Zeke Miller, Lindsay Whitehurst and Seung Min Kim in Washington, D.C., contributed to this report.
