Owl Activities for Kindergarten
Around October many classrooms do a study on bats, spiders, and owls. As part of your owl activities for Kindergarten you might read books and learn about their life cycle and habitats. You might also do an activity to help students learn to label the parts of an owl.
That's where today's blog post comes in. I've got a great freebie and fun snack idea to help students label the parts of an owl. Not only is this hands-on and fun, but it's also a visual way to help students remember.
A quick Google search will reveal that there are so many Rice Krispie treat variations, but today I wanted to share a fun and easy Rice Krispie treat variation that'll fit it perfectly with your owl unit.
This article, along with many other articles on The Printable Princess, contains Amazon affiliate links. If you purchase through the links I earn a small commission. Clicking these links does not cost you any extra but helps this website to keep great articles and freebies coming your way.
Owl Themed Read Aloud Suggestion:
Most teachers do a lot of read alouds to go along with a unit of study. As students eat their owl snack, it's also a great time for a read aloud. Their mouths are full, they are enjoying their snack, and I find this to be a time where they are extra engaged. Of course you don't have to do a read aloud as part of this snack, but here are two book suggestions for you.
I'm included my favorite fiction and non-fiction books about owls. Owls by Gail Gibbons is great non-fiction book that would pair well with this snack-tivity. If you're looking for a fiction book, check out Owl Babies by Martin Waddell .
Rice Krispie Owl Snack Ingredients:
You’ll need just a few ingredients for our owl activities snack: Rice Krispie treat, chocolate frosting, mini oreos, candy corn, white icing, large candy eyes, and chocolate sprinkles.
Each student or little owl expert will need:
- 1 Rice Krispie treat square
- approximately 2-3 tablespoons of chocolate frosting
- 1 or 2 mini Oreo cookies
- 2 small dots of white frosting
- 2 large candy eyes
- chocolate sprinkles
How to Make this Owl Activity:
Begin by supplying each student with a paper plate and the ingredients they will need. I like using a paper plate as a work surface because it provides a visual workspace and it also makes clean up much easier. This activity works well in a whole group or in a small group rotation.
Students will need about two to three tablespoons of chocolate frosting. They will spread the frosting to cover the top of the rice krispie. You can have students use a plastic knife or spoon or a tongue depressor to spread the frosting. The rice krispie represents the owl's body.
Students will need one or two mini Oreo cookies. The easiest way is to supply students with two cookies and have them twist each cookie apart. They can eat the side that has the frosting on it. They will use the frosting-free side as the base for the owl's eyes.
Students will need two large candy eyes. These are found in the cake decorating section of a craft store. If you can't find large eyes, smaller eyes would work too. Students will need a small dot of white icing to act as the glue to secure the candy eyes to the mini Oreos.
To complete the owl snack, students will add a candy corn and chocolate sprinkles on top of their owl. The candy corn represents the beak, while the sprinkles represent the feathers. This is where having that paper plate is super helpful because kids can be messy! The plate helps catch the loose sprinkles that don't quite make it on to the owl.
For step by step directions on how to make the Rice Krispie Owl treat, check out this video:
Label the owl kindergarten printable:.
To complete the owl snack-tivity and add an educational component, I've put together a free Label the Owl printable page. This page can be completed before the owl snack or use it as an extension activity. Whether it's done before or after, labeling is a must when it comes to owl activities for kindergarten.
There's no prep work required for this Label the Owl printable, which makes it great to pull out at a moments notice.
Students will need glue, scissors, and crayons to complete the page. They will cut out the owl labeling words on the right and glue them in the boxes to show the parts of the owl.
Once the students have completed the activity, they can color the picture.
If your owl unit has already passed, be sure to pin an image to remind you next year. You'll have a head start on planning your owl activities for Kindergarten.
You can download your copy of the free Label the Owl printable here . Find more snack-tivity ideas here .

Some suggestions for research: American Barn Owl, Eastern Screech Owl, Snowy Owl, Great Horned Owl, Barred Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Elf Owl, or Northern Saw-whet Owl. Find out what types of owls are prevalent in your area; your student might want to research one of those.
If you live near a forested area, you could even go owling together!
Owl Research
Your student will need to research in order to complete the notebook pages. You can check out a variety of books about owls at your local library, or you can use reliable websites. Your student will need to find out more about the owl’s habitat, diet, defenses, and anatomy. It would also be good to have some information about owl pellets, if your student is going to use the observation and dissection pages.
Here are a few recommended websites for your owl research:
- Great Horned Owl (National Geographic)

- Let your student conduct research and complete the pages.

Montessori Inspiration for Parents and Teachers
Montessori-Inspired Owl Unit with Free Printables and Activities
September 15, 2017 By Deb Chitwood 2 Comments
Owls are an especially fun theme for the beginning of the school year and for fall in general. I placed new owl activities on my shelves yesterday and let my 3¾-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, start working with them. She’s totally in love with the theme! Today, I’m sharing free owl printables and activities in a number of curriculum areas along with my new Montessori-inspired owl pack (subscriber freebie)! There’s even an added page with “ow” phonogram work!
In addition to our new Montessori-inspired owl pack, I have a special instant download from The Montessori Company with a hand-painted great horned owl culture card!

You’ll also find Montessori-inspired owl numbers, letters, spinners, and more (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)
I have a number of owl books, both nonfiction and fiction, for our owl unit. We always enjoy the National Geographic Readers, such as this month’s Owls . There’s also a large amount of easily understandable information in Owls by Gail Gibbons. I have some fiction books featuring owls in our book baskets.
Free Printables: Owl Poems and Songs from Owl Babies Lesson Plans and Lapbook at Homeschool Share and Owls Rhyme Song from KidSparkz. I placed these on a wooden tabletop easel on the shelf.
You could mix your owl-themed activities among your shelves according to curriculum area. Or you could have a special owl area something like the one pictured. My shelves this month have a mixture of skill levels. Many of the activities can be adapted for a variety of levels.
If you’re a homeschooler, just choose the activities that work for your child’s interests and ability levels. If you don’t have room for all the activities you’d like to do, simply rotate them.
Great Horned Owl Culture Card (on Shelf with Owl Books)
I’m happy to share with you this awesome hand-painted great horned owl culture card from The Montessori Company. You can use it on your shelves to introduce an owl unit. I’m hosting the free printable as an instant download at Living Montessori Now. You can always access the free great horned owl culture card here .
The description says: “The Great Horned Owl is a bird of prey known as a raptor. It flies silently and only hunts at night.”

This activity can be used for a variety of levels. Young children can work on learning both the English and Spanish color names, while older children can work on learning the Spanish color names if they don’t already know them.
Owl Opposites Game
Free Printable: Owl Opposites from 1+1+1=1
This is a super-simple activity to prepare. The cartoon characters are obviously not realistic, Montessori-style images. They’re just silly, though, and my granddaughter loved them.
I made a game where we went through each card, saying, for example, “Light and heavy are opposites.” Then I had Zoey do a scavenger hunt (such as bringing me something light and something heavy) or performing the actions on a card (such as moving slow and then moving fast). Zoey laughed a lot during the game and wanted to repeat it as soon as we were finished.
Free Printables: Great horned owl card in manuscript, D’Nealian, or Cursive for Letter G Object Basket (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)
It might seem odd to emphasize /g/ when owls are the theme. I didn’t want to use the short or long /o/ sound for owl, so I instead used /g/ for great horned owl and then had a separate activity for the “ow” phonogram. In my /g/ basket, I had a sandpaper letter g, goose (Loosy the Canadian goose Beanie Baby), glass, golf club, golden bead, gorilla, and guitar.
Owl and “ow” Phonogram Sand Tray
Free Printables: “ow” owl font cards (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)
For the tray, I used the wooden tray from the Melissa & Doug Lace and Trace Shapes . You can use whatever tray or container work best for you, though. I often color salt with food coloring, but this time I just used some sand and a twig from a tree for the writing instrument. For interest, I added the snowy owl from the Safari Ltd. Exotic Birds TOOB .
I have a post and video on how to introduce words starting with phonograms , even with very young children.
Free Printables: Owl Numbers and Owl Spinner (part of my subscriber freebie pack, so just sign up for my email to get the link and password … or check the bottom of your latest newsletter if you’re already a subscriber)
For this activity, I used Multicraft tray and a Bambu condiment cup to hold 10 Owl Antique Silver Tibetan Style Charms Pendants (surprisingly inexpensive), and a p ipe cleaner for the owls to make the necklace.
Counting and Stringing Owls to Make a Pipe Cleaner Necklace
Zoey just laid out the number cards in order and then spun the spinner. First she got 5, then 9, and then 10. She didn’t want to stop until all the owls were on her necklace. She loved the necklace and wore it until it was time to go home. Then she wanted to take it home. She was finally persuaded to keep it at Grandma’s house to do again!
Owl Number Mazes
Free Printable: Owl Themed Number Mazes by Grace n Giggles at Teachers Pay Teachers
This was another simple activity to prepare. I used a Multicraft tray and a Bambu condiment cup to hold the number of small glass gems needed to complete the maze. I like that the maze doesn’t just have a simple maze. It requires some problem solving. There are also a number of different mazes: 1-10, 1-20, 1-30, counting to 50 by 2s, and counting to 100 by 5s.
I had Zoey place a gem on each number she used in the maze.

I love the owl customizable name plates because they’re so versatile. You could use it for introducing a child’s first name. Zoey is comfortable with her first name, so I included first and last name. For older children, you could individualize reading or spelling words for them to focus on.

Adopt an Owl Think about having the classroom or school adopt an owl at the National Wildlife Federation Adoption Center . Each adoption comes with a certificate and an 11 x 14 color poster of the type of owl adopted. Children can earn the money for the owl adoption via a fund raiser. For example, they could sell handmade owl art projects or "help the owls" badges and buttons to friends and family members. The adoption prices range from about $20.00 to $100.00.
Give a Hoot and Don't Pollute?
Woodsy Owl works for the United States Forest Service. His most famous motto is "Give a Hoot. Don't Pollute!" His most recent motto is "Lend a Hand. Care for the Land." Talk with children about Woodsy Owl's mottos and what they mean. Organize a clean-up walk around school or in a local natural area. Make sure children wash their hands and bring gloves for picking up litter. Get parent permission for each child before the activity. If a clean-up walk is not an option, invite Woodsy Owl to visit the classroom or school to talk about taking care of the earth. Find out more at the U.S. Forest Service

Owl finger rhyme:.
The Owl Original Author Unknown
An owl sat alone on the branch of a tree, (Use arm as tree branch and raise thumb for owl.) And she was as quiet as quiet could be. 'Twas night and her eyes were wide open like this; (Circle eyes with fingers and look around.) She looked all around, not a thing did she miss. Some little birds perched on the branch of the tree, (Fingers of other hand fly onto tree branch.) And sat there as quiet as quiet could be. The solemn old owl said "whoo-whoo-whoo," And up jumped the birds and away they flew. (Wave hand away and flutter fingers behind back.)

Owl Exercises
Lead children in some movements and stretches using owl behaviors as a guide. Children can:
- Fly: by flapping their arms
- Look around: by turning their heads slowly from side to side
- Perch: by bending their knees and standing on their toes with their arms at their side
- Swoop: by sticking their arms out straight to each side and dipping their heads down and then back up from side to side
Ask children for other ideas they might have about owl behaviors that can be acted out as movement or stretching exercises.

The following is a post by Amy Milcic of Busy Boys Brigade .
Owls are a favorite topic in our family. From cute cartoon drawings to the study of the actual bird, owls are a source of delight and intrigue. My boys and I love to find resources about owls to add to our homeschool library.
We were fortunate to receive Owl Moon by Jane Yolen from my mom, a retired elementary teacher. A winner of the Caldecott Medal, Owl Moon is filled with intricate sketches enhanced by descriptive imagery. Owl Moon captures the experience of a young girl as she goes “owling” with her father for the first time.
I chose this book as part of our winter family read aloud time. Children of all ages can enjoy this story of a girl and this special event in her life. All of my boys, ages 1-13, eagerly listened to hear if the young girl and her dad found an owl. My older boys enjoyed retelling the book’s sequence of events and sharing their thoughts on what happened later.

My older boys also used notebooking and conducted online research to learn more about owls. As part of their science lesson, they dissected owl pellets. They were fascinated to discover and sort bones, fur, and twigs. This dissection activity led to discussion on owl habitats and behaviors.
To extend learning fun with Owl Moon, consider these online resources:
- Owl Moon by Jane Yolen–Scholastic (includes links to free writing prompts, extension activities, discussion guide, and teaching plan)
- JaneYolen.com (background about author and book)
- Bright Hub Education (owl facts, comprehension questions, game, and art prompts)
- Sheppard Softward (owl facts and quiz)
As a fun activity for all of my boys, we used playdough to create their own owls. They found pictures of different types of owls and selected one to try to recreate with our DIY playdough .
For art, they used a pencil and white paper. Without lifting the pencil, they were instructed to draw a tree with owl somewhere in their scene. This art task was challenging but a fun way to create their own winter scenes.
They had a blast with an Owl Calling Contest. My boys do not typically need a reason to cause a lot of noise. They enjoyed practicing Whooo-hooo and competing for the title, “Best Owl Caller.”
My younger boys used this Owl Moon Printable Pack to continue their learning fun. This pack includes:
- 1 sets of 12 memory cards with labels (print out 2 sets and glue onto cardstock for use)
- Owl Moon word scramble
- mini-coloring book
- lyrics to “5 Little Owls” plus owl song props
- 2 coloring pages
This printable pack is designed for preschool through elementary level.
Download the Free Owl Moon Printables Packet
I pray that these activities and printable pack on Jane Yolen’s Owl Moon bless your family with fun learning.

Preschool Owl Activities (free printable)
Are you looking for a fun way for young children to have fun learning with an owl theme? These owl games for preschoolers are a great way to add owl activities to preschool classrooms and homes too. From puzzles and Memory to dice games and an alphabet search and find, you are sure to find resources that your kids will love.
Owl Printables for Preschoolers
Owl puzzles.
I love that these homemade puzzles are real pictures of owls.
- Print the puzzle page.
- Cut out the four puzzles.
- Cut the pieces apart.
- Laminate for durability.
- Challenge your children to put the pieces back together to form an owl.
Put magnets on the back and solve these puzzles on a vertical surface such as a magnetic easel or refrigerator. Working on a vertical surface is so beneficial for preschoolers. It builds their core, shoulder, and arm muscles.
Owl Memory Game
We love memory games! A simple matching game is so beneficial for visual discrimination and spatial awareness.
- There are 8 different colored owls in this game. Print two copies of the Memory Cards.
- Cut the cards apart. Laminate for durability.
- Mix up the cards and put them face down in four rows of four cards.
- Take turns turning over two cards. If the cards match, keep the pair and go again.
- If they don’t match, flip them back over and the next player takes their turn.
- Keep going until all of the matches are found.
- The player with the most matches is the winner.
Owl Shape Sorting
Print the owl shapes. The owl cards include the basic shapes of circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Use these cards to sort shapes. One idea is to cut shapes out of construction paper or craft foam for sorting. You can also sort blocks by shape. These shape buttons (affiliate link) are our favorite for sorting, counting, and to use as game pieces.
Owl Counting
This owl counting activity is a fun way to practice the math skills of counting, one to one correspondence, and number recognition. Print the owl cards and the numeral cards. Cut them out and mix them up. Match the owl number card to the numeral.
You can also use these cards to practice number order. Match number magnets to the owls instead of the number cards.
These cards can also be turned into a game of Memory!
Owl Alphabet Search and Find
There are two pages of the owl alphabet search and find. One includes all letters that have straight lines only. The other pages includes letters that have curves.
There are two ways you can use this resource. One way is to put it in literacy centers with a do a dot marker. If it is an independent activity, children will say a letter and stamp it. If they are working in pairs, one child will say “I spy the letter K.” and the other child will hunt for it and stamp it with the marker.
Teachers can also use these pages to assess literacy skills such as letter recognition or letter sounds. You can say, “Do you see any letters that you know?” or you can point to the letters and ask your student what the name of it is or the sound it makes.
Owl Dice Game
This dice game is a fun way to practice counting and one to one correspondence. Because it is on a ten frame it also is great for strengthening number sense.
- Print the game board.
- Collect game pieces such as blocks, buttons, gems, etc.
- Roll one die. Cover the amount of owls you rolled. Encourage the child to cover the owls from top to bottom, left to right.
- “How many more do you need to win?” “Oh I see that you are halfway there.”
- You win when all of the owls are covered.

Owl Activities
Dissect owl pellets . Students will have a great time looking through the pellets to discover bones of different animals that were eaten by the owl. Make sure to have books about owls and a chart to compare the bones that are found to identify the prey.
Sing owl songs and poems. Our favorite is 5 Little Owls . You can make puppets on craft sticks using the free printable.
Looking for cooperative games for your students to play? Try this Hoot Owl Hoot! board game.
During circle time try a game of Hoot! Hoot! Catch. Play it like a game of Duck Duck Goose. Pretend to be owls and say “Hoot, Hoot, Hoot” and then “Catch” when you tap the head of the person to chase you around the circle.
Check out these amazing Owl Facts for kids !
Try this O is for Owl Drawing Activity . This drawing series is awesome because you start each drawing by making a capital letter. Then you draw something that starts with that letter. So fun!
