The best office chairs at IKEA

Our pick of the best office chairs at IKEA for a range of budgets.

One of the best office chairs at IKEA, Markus, in front of a desk with a Mac screen

The best office chairs at IKEA offer something for every budget. IKEA has a huge fan base thanks to its marrying of Scandinavian style with (largely) affordable prices. Office chairs are no exception and the Swedish furniture giant has a range of chairs that could make for a good home office set up.

Ikea office chairs offer a good balance between price and comfort, and they offer a range of different styles from formal, high-back office chairs to more casual options, conference chairs and gaming chairs. They have all been tested for durability and they almost always come with a ten-year limited warranty for peace of mind.

No, IKEA office chairs are not all the most ergonomic of chairs. For that, we recommend browsing our guide to the best office chairs for back pain and the best standing desks , which can also be good for your posture. And if you're prepared to make a real investment, also take a look at our guide to the best Herman Miller chairs . However, the best office chairs at IKEA do offer a good trade-off in terms of value. You might also want to see our guide to the  best office chairs  overall, which does feature a chair from IKEA (number one in the list below).

Why you can trust Creative Bloq Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

01. IKEA Markus swivel chair

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

IKEA's popular Markus swivel chair is the brand's most classic office chair. It's hardly the most thrilling chair design-wise, but it's a solid if utilitarian office chair that does its job well. It has features that make it a fairly ergonomic option for the price, with casters and swivel to help you avoid straining to reach things, in-built lumbar support for your back and adjustable height and back tilt. The breathable mesh back keeps you cool and is easy to clean.

Unfortunately, the armrests aren't adjustable, although they can be removed completely. The automatic brakes on the wheels are a neat addition and like all IKEA products, it's been tested for durability. For a more adjustable, slightly more modern update on the classic Markus, take a look at the Järvfjället below, but the Markus offers very good value for money.

02. IKEA Järvfjället

Ikea's Järvfjället may not roll off the tongue quite like the popular Markus swivel chair (see above), but this revamped version of the best office chair at IKEA makes several improvements that might be worth the higher price for some. Most of them are questions of adjustability, with the Järvfjället adding in an adjustable seat pan and adjustable lumbar support for improved ergonomics

The former can be easily adjusted using the bottom lever, then you just slide the seat pan back to create the right amount of space behind your legs (the edge of your seat should never push into the backs of your knees). For lumbar support, there's a movable pad to support your lumbar back. The headrest is also adjustable, and you can order it with or without armrests.

It costs about $30 / £20 more than the Markus, but the additions do make the chair more adjustable to your own comfort and shape. The chair's design is also a little more exciting than the Markus with a more modern look. The mesh back is high, with a slim frame and slightly rounded shape. The chair also features adjustable recline.

03. IKEA Hattefjall

The Hattefjall office chair is very different to numbers one and two on our list of the best office chairs at IKEA. It has a much softer, rounded shape. It has a solid build, with a stylishly upholstered high-density foam seat and back. There's built-in lumbar support, adjustable back height and seat depth, an automatic tilt mechanism, and the armrests can be adjusted upwards/downwards and forwards/backwards.

Another nice touch is that the casters have a pressure-sensitive brake mechanism that keeps the chair in place when you stand up and automatically releases when you sit down. The seat lips make for a nice looking design, but people who like to move about a lot in their sea may find they get in the way. Just check your measurements to make sure the chair will go high enough for your desk.

04. IKEA Flintan

If the IKEA office chairs above are beyond your budget, the IKEA Flintan is a very reasonably priced chair that still offers back support for comfortable sessions at your desk. The height and tilt are adjustable – the tilt can locked and unlocked, and overall the chair feels like a quality solid build, especially for this price. It has the downside of fixed armrests (an optional extra) like the Markus above, but as long as you don't mind that, it's hard to pick a better IKEA office chair at this price point.

05. IKEA Långfjäll

Most IKEA office chairs don't offer much variety of colour options, but the Långfjäll conference chair is a bit of an exception coming in four shades (including a pink and blue). The foam seat is simple but does offer built-in lumbar support and a tilt tension mechanism. The seat height is adjustable but the back isn't, nor is the seat depth of the arms if you choose to add them. This one might not be a chair for sitting in all day, but it will do the job very well for brief periods such as meetings, with the cold-foam seat fairly comfortable for a while.

06. IKEA Matchspel

The Matchspel is billed as a gaming chair rather than an office chair ('spel' means 'play' in Swedish), but it could be used as an office chair. In fact, the design is very reminiscent of the Markus and the Järvfjället at numbers one and two of our list of the best office chairs at IKEA. The nod to gamers is fairly discreet, taking the form of narrow racing stripes in red or blue, so this wouldn't look too out of place as an office chair. It's not a bad value, but the Markus and Järvfjället or sturdier chairs, so this is really only worth going for to save some money or because you like the touch of colour.

07. IKEA Fjällberget

This is another IKEA chair billed as a conference chair. It's simple and compact but boasts quite a unique design that will look good in the right setting. The natural white-stained oak veneer or black-stained ash veneer back has built-in curved arms that offer surprising comfortable support, although perhaps not for long periods. The fabric seat cushion is stuffed with high-resilience cold foam and the seat height is adjustable. Note that unlike the other chairs in this list, this one doesn't have casters, so you're fixed in one place.

All the Best Desks We’ve Ever Written About

student desk chair ikea

Finding the “best” desk really depends on whom you ask. So we talked to writers, artists , designers, and people who work from home , surfaced reader reviews from across the internet, took quick polls (among our most nit-picky friends and Strategist editors ), and partook in some advanced internet snooping .

Below, we rounded up the best desks according to everyday people and experts. Our recommendations range from a laptop stand that allows one author to work from their couch to a Reddit-favorite gaming desk — at all different price points, from $40 to over $1,000, if you feel like splurging.

Best desks for small spaces

Ikea Micke Desk

Susan Dominus, staff writer for The New York Times Magazine , owns two of these simple and compact desks from Ikea. After buying one for her then-10-year-old son, she got a second when she realized how well it fit in a cozy corner of her bedroom . “The desk seems strangely big, wide, and deep for its size, and the drawer is surprisingly capacious, just big enough for everything you’d need,” Dominus says. Plus she likes how the white finish feels clean, bright, efficient, and friendly.

West Elm Industrial Storage Mini Desk

For a more modern look, this mango-wood desk from West Elm is just two inches wider than the Safavieh, but it has metal legs and no drawer pulls. In a previous version of this story, Christopher Stevens, interior designer and founder of Tipper Studio , said its “petite dimensions and a pleasing wood finish combined with ‘go with anything’ black metal accents make this one a great choice for a variety of more laid back décors.” If space isn’t an issue, Stevens pointed out this desk comes in a few other sizes that might better suit your space.

Careyann 42

This triangular Careyann desk has more than 2,200 five-star reviews on Wayfair, with many fans praising its small size but functional storage spaces. One reviewer says “the desktop is spacious enough to accommodate my two full-size computer monitors ,” and another adds, “I love the little shelves underneath to tuck away our small printer and books .”

Wade Logan Oglethorpe Floating Desk

Or try a floating desk for flexible placement, like the one that interior designer Justina Blakeney has in her Los Angeles home. With two drop-down shelves, it’s “the perfect small-space desk and bar,” Blakeney said in a previous version of this story. Though there’s no exact replica for Blakely’s vintage piece, Wayfair’s clean-lined floating desk has two drop-down shelves and comes in six shades.

Kirun Oak Console

While a traditional desk may not work in a small space, a narrow console table is an easier fit. Interior designer Pramiti Bhargava of BlueGrape Staging recommends replacing a bedroom nightstand with a piece like this two-shelf, solid oak console from Article, who also makes some of our favorite affordable dining chairs . The bottom shelf can be used for storage while keeping the top clear, and a stool nearby means it can be converted into a desk.

Ikea Vittsjo Laptop Stand

Another space-saving option is this glass-topped Ikea laptop stand that’s under $50. Author and podcaster Jennifer Keishen Armstrong and her partner each use one on their preferred ends of the sofa , where Armstrong says that the tables’ open C -shape “allow you to sit up properly and have a hard surface for your computer.” And if she’d rather use her computer on her lap, Armstrong says she uses the table for holding drinks , pens , and books as she works.

CB2 Novo Acrylic Folding table

And if you’re really tight on space, you might need a desk that can completely disappear at the end of the work day. Khalea Underwood , the global editorial manager for M.A.C Cosmetics, typically works from her couch and recommends this folding table . She says it works as a desk, table, and workstation and can be easily flattened and tucked under the couch.

Best L-shaped desks

Bush Furniture Office 500 L-Shaped Executive Desk

In a previous version of this story, we snooped on Bob Boilen’s desk, which is used in NPR’s “Tiny Desk Concert” videos. His L-shaped eight-by-six-foot desk sits in the network’s D.C. office and comes from Herman Miller’s Canvas Office line . Since those are only available in bulk, we found this L-shaped six-by-six-foot desk from Bush Business Furniture, which comes with a wide top and looks quite similar.

Teraves Modern L-Shaped Desk

While looking for more L-shaped desks in a previous version of this story, we also found this gem: an L-shaped desk for well under $100 on Amazon. Similar wraparound designs can easily cost over $1,000, so this one, with plenty of space for storage underneath, and surface area sufficient for two monitors, is a steal.

Best glass-top desks

Tarrant 47

After JaKissa Taylor-Semple, known as DJ Kiss, posted an enviable desk setup , we set out to find the model in a previous version of this story. The glass top gave our writers a clear view of her fabulous shoe collection — rows and rows of beautiful heels — in the background. While we couldn’t find the exact desk she uses, this glass-top writing desk with chrome legs is a pretty spot-on dupe for hers for less than $300.

Jensen Desk

When we explored the workspaces of creative and productive people, Emma Mcilroy , the CEO of Portland-based feminist clothing line Wildfang, said she spends a lot of time at her West Elm Jensen Desk and gets the most work done there. With a wooden A-frame base and sleek glass surface, this choice is “a really cool, modern take on a mid-century design,” Mcilroy says.

Best minimalist desks

Novogratz White Marble Athena Computer Desk

Reporter and podcast host Sylvia Obell said the design of this writing desk suits her minimalist style in a previous version of this story. She likes how the white marble desktop serves as a canvas for her to add “pops of color from desk accents like a stack of books, a cute tray shaped as red lips .” The drawers are open-facing, which Obells says forces her to keep them tidy. Plus, Obell says it was “easy to assemble, which I appreciate as a single woman. All I had to do was screw on the legs.”

Zinus Jennifer Modern Studio Collection Soho Rectangular Desk

We named this minimalist Zinus Soho desk the best-rated home-office desk and writing desk on Amazon in a previous version of this story. The rectangular desk is two feet deep and ranges from 47 to 63 inches long, providing what one reviewer describes as a “huge work space so I can spread everything out, and my desk-chair arms fit underneath without getting stuck so I can roll around freely.” The under-$200, flat-pack design is from Zinus’s readily available Modern Studio Collection, which also includes these Strategist-reviewed bed frames and mattresses .

Steelcase Currency Author Desk

Strategist columnist Chris Black told us he uses a simple, untreated wood desk that his friend built for him when we asked him what desk he uses for a previous version of this story. However, if he were to buy something, Black recommends this (also extremely Judd-ish) desk from Steelcase, calling it “clean, simple, and well priced. You can fit storage underneath which is a bonus,” he says. Like anyone with a penchant for the modular and minimal , Black suggests the “winter on maple” or white options.

West Elm Parsons Desk

This simple West Elm desk is a favorite of Timothy Brown, founder of an eponymous NYC-based design studio , who says the size is perfect, the design is ageless, the construction is solid, and it’s very easy to use in any room — he’s used it for countless clients. Vogue contributing editor Sarah Brown is also a fan, saying “the Parsons just looks like a white table so it’s not necessarily too office-looking.”

Best mid-century desk

CB2 Drommen Desk

After combing through a Vogue article about five editors’ at-home desk setups for a previous version of this story, we learned that fashion director Virginia Smith lives “in fear of technology issues” while working from home. With two side drawers and a compartment for cord management, this warm-toned, acacia wood desk has enough space to keep Smith’s laptop , iPad, and two phones at the ready, plus flowers and her son’s self-portrait. Although it’s on the pricier side, the Drommen Desk is a CB2 exclusive from German designer Jannis Ellenberger, whose work usually retails for much more.

Best lectern

Oak Wood Classroom Lectern

When we looked for novelist Philip Roth’s desk in a previous version of this story, we found he had two light-wood lecterns that he used as standing desks — one in his Upper West Side work studio, the other in his home in Connecticut. He stood while he wrote instead of sitting because he had a bad back and was said to have walked half a mile for every page he wrote. While Roth’s were custom-made, these from Classroom Essentials Online will create a similar-looking setup.

Best lap desks

Sofia + Sam Multi Tasking Memory Foam Lap Desk

Even if you have a plush office setup at home, Brown says , a lap desk can come in handy when you feel like working in bed or on the couch. This memory-foam cushioned lap desk is her latest favorite, as it comes with a slot for holding a phone or iPad, as well as a separate pull-out mousepad .

Rossie Home Acacia Wood Lap Desk

Architectural designer and blogger Sade Akinsanya says a version of this wooden Rossie bed tray “has been well used” — for eating, working in bed, and watching Netflix — ever since she got a similar one years ago. It also has foldable legs and a slot to hold your phone or tablet for hands-free viewing.

Best low desk

Ikea Lack Black-Brown Coffee Table

Painter Marcus Brutus told us in a previous version of this story that he prefers to use this lightweight coffee table from Ikea to work on smaller drawings in lieu of a desk. Brutus said he leans over it from his couch and that it “isn’t so low that it strains my back.” A bottom shelf means you organize materials below and keep the top clear.

Best desk for storage

Monarch Specialties Metal Computer Desk

In a previous version of this story, we found that most of the products on interior-design aggregator Houzz have below a thousand reviews, which is why this computer desk from Monarch Specialties is such a standout with an average rating of 4.4 stars and more than 1,700 reviews. Buyers of the desk praise its storage (two large drawers and another for files) and open layout. One independent business owner even describes herself as “happy as a pig in mud,” thanks to the desk’s “highly functional storage space” for all her papers, and another says she likes that the contemporary-looking desk neatly hides work materials at the end of the day.

Staples 2-Drawer Vertical File Cabinet

We snooped on a 2018 New Yorker profile on artist Alex Katz and saw a picture of one of the offices in his West Broadway studio. Underneath piles of photographs of his family is his desk, made out of two industrial gray metal filing cabinets (covered in Post-it notes) and a slab of glass. Similar cabinets are available at Staples; the glass can be procured at Home Depot .

Best standing desks

VariDesk Pro Plus 36 Height-Adjustable Standing Desk

If you prefer function over form when it comes to standing desks, both chiropractor Jan Lefkowitz and integrative pain expert Joe Tatta vouched for the VariDesk in a previous version of this story. Tatta says that “substituting prolonged standing for prolonged sitting results in a greater feeling of discomfort,” so he liked that this three-plane desk “accommodates a variety of body types and postures.” Similarly, Lefkowitz noted that the 11 different height settings allow for a variety of working positions.

Fully Jarvis Bamboo Standing Desk

The Fully Jarvis desk is praised by multiple staffers at our sister site the Verge. Deputy editor Dan Seifert has owned the larger sizes for about four years now and calls it comfortable, stable, and spacious with “more versatility than typical desk options.” News editor Nick Statt, meanwhile, calls the Jarvis “far and away my best work-from-home purchase in years.” At just over $900, the desk might seem pricey by desk standards, but Statt says it’s affordable for a standing option — especially for one that looks this good.

SHW Electric Height-Adjustable Computer Desk

This standing desk is highly rated on Amazon — and a Strategist-reader favorite. Similar to the Jarvis, it has a sleek wood-and-white design and an electric lift system, which one five-star Amazon reviewer says rises and lifts quickly and according to your height. “Never knew I needed an electric height adjustable desk until I got this one,” they add. Plus, buyers say it’s fast and easy to set up, with at least 20 mentions of how straightforward it is to assemble.

UPLIFT Standing Desk

For a customizable option, Strategist writer Lauren Ro tells us about her husband’s work-from-home setup, which includes this Uplift standing desk. She says he likes that it’s highly customizable, with about two dozen desktop materials available, five sizes (note that not every size is available in every material), and options for up and down buttons. You can add everything from desk drawers to magnetic cable-organizing channels and power grommets that let you plug in a phone or laptop right on the desktop.

FEZIBO Height Adjustable Electric Standing Desk with Storage

Former Strategist tech writer Jordan Bowman says many standing desks don’t have built-in storage because their moving bases and variable heights make it difficult to incorporate drawers or shelves. But this desk — which has small drawers that don’t get in the way of adjusting the height — is highly popular among Amazon reviewers. It has motorized controls and comes in three desktop sizes and two colorways.

Seville Classics Mobile Laptop Desk Cart

For a movable standing desk, this manually adjustable option on wheels is popular among Amazon reviewers for its simplicity and convenience. They note its lightness and versatility, and how it’s deceivingly roomy — though on the smaller side, the desk is able to comfortably fit one reviewer’s 15-inch laptop, two big external drives , mouse and mouse pad, notepad, and TV remote. Assembly is quick, and it has four wheels, two of which are lockable to ensure it stays in place.

Best gaming desk

Ikea Fredde Desk

Ikea desks are big among the members of the multimillion-member subreddit r/buildapc . One Redditor wrote that they’ve been using this desk for six years, while another says their Fredde is also still going strong after five years, adding that it’s great for gaming . When compared to Ikea’s iconic gaming desk, the Jerker, members say they prefer Fredde’s additional shelving for monitors and subwoofers . One pleased gamer notes that the Fredde also has cupholders, a top shelf for a printer, and it disassembles easily if you are moving.

The engineers and home experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute test every office essential needed to create the most productive, comfortable working environment, from the best office desks to standing desks , office chairs on Amazon , desk mats and more. When looking for the best office chairs, our pros considered a number of factors like adjustability, comfort, materials, ergonomics and design. Whenever possible, we asked our at-home testers to share feedback on how easy the chair was to set up, whether it was comfortable throughout hours of use and more.

After our reviews, continue reading to learn more about what to look for when shopping for a desk chair as well as tips from orthopedic experts on how to properly sit in a desk chair.

Investing in a great desk chair doesn't have to cost a fortune, and that's just one of the reasons our experts love this ergonomic chair from Branch. Our pros agree that it's the perfect combo of comfort, price and style. The chair, which comes in five breathable mesh colors, features eight different points of adjustment so you can customize things like the chair height, seat depth, armrests, lumbar support and more. For an additional fee, you can add an adjustable mesh headrest.

Assembly of the Branch chair is simple, and we like how it will look stylish in just about any home office thanks to a sleek, modern design. It took GH's former health editor Zee Krstic under 10 minutes to put the chair together with only a few parts to screw in. "Assembly was exceptionally impressive, and the eight-point system is all functional and customizable," he says. He also appreciated the chair's aesthetic, though did find that the curvature of the seat almost forced him to sit upright as opposed to naturally supporting the lower back where needed.

If you want to avoid spending hundreds on your next desk chair, consider this Amazon best seller with more than 60,000 reviews and an average 4.3-star rating. Not only is this swivel chair under $50, but its mesh material shouldn’t retain heat and the padded seat will be comfortable enough to endure long meetings. We especially like that it comes in classic colors like black, white and gray as well as seven fun shades to match your office’s décor.

Though we haven't tested it yet in the Lab, we like that you can raise and lower the seat height or tilt the chair back up to 130 degrees. Just note that the armrests aren’t adjustable and the seat can feel narrow, according to some online reviewers. Other users describe this chair as comfortable, easy to assemble, sturdy and love that it offers sufficient back support to get through the workday.

Write, sit in on meetings or spend hours gaming in this comfortable chair from Autonomous. While we haven’t yet tested it in the Lab, online reviewers rave about its strong back and neck support , how comfy it is and its high-quality construction. Many note that it’s easy to assemble, while our pros appreciate the chair’s breathable mesh back and soft foam seat cushion. "Lumbar support is comfortable and fits snuggly against your back," says one online reviewer.

To stay comfortable throughout the day, you can recline up to 22 degrees or lock the chair in five positions. The adjustable headrest is also a nice touch that makes it possible to lean back and feel supported while looking at your computer monitor. It’s an excellent choice for offices, and you’re able to choose among six color combinations, including bright shades like red apple, evergreen and baby blue.

This chair from Herman Miller will cost you a pretty penny, but it's one of the most comfortable picks on this list. Most of its features are customizable and adjustable, ranging from what kind of arm pad support you want to how much back support you need. Unlike other chairs, you have the choice between small, medium and large sizes so you get the best fit for your body .

This chair is suitable for a wide range of consumers and our pros like its breathable fabric, though some wish there were more colors offered. "This is one of the finest items I have ever purchased!!" one online reviewer raves. "The quality, precision and detail are amazing." Others mention that it's super comfortable, durable and well worth the money.

In the GH Institute offices, we love Branch desk chairs and this pick certainly stands out for its stylish yet comfortable design. Though it’s pricier than our best overall pick, we love that the Verve comes in trendy shades — like coral and mint — and a “dipped in” style that will give your home office some spark.

“My office is very visible so style was important, and this chair is as pretty as it is comfortable ,” one online reviewer shares. The backrest is made of a soft, breathable 3D knit material that users love, and a padded, adjustable lumbar rest supports your spine and helps you maintain proper posture. Just keep in mind that you can only adjust the height of the armrests, which several online reviewers found firmer than they’d like.

Ideal for those who work long hours or experience back pain, this chair from Steelcase features an adjustable seat depth and height so you can find your most comfortable configuration. We appreciate the Gesture 360 arm feature that lets you adjust armrests to support you whether you're typing on a keyboard or texting on your phone. Our pros have tested several Steelcase chairs in the Lab over the years, and we laud the brand for its quality construction.

According to the manufacturer, the 3D LiveBack Technology embedded in the chair mimics the movement of your spine to align it in a healthy shape, and the seat cushion is made to reduce pressure and conform to the body . Though this chair is definitely an investment, it should be able to provide comfort and strong lumbar support throughout the day.

"The Steelcase Gesture chair has made me more comfortable at my desk than I have ever been, and I only wish that I had bought it sooner," one online reviewer shares. It comes in a wide selection of colors, including bright, fun fabrics. But if you prefer a mesh chair, our pros recommend the Steelcase Karman for its breathable design.

Fancy a desk chair with some extra cushioning and padding ? This one might just feel like the recliner in your living room, but it'll look professional in any Zoom background with its rich, faux leather.

Though the leather could retain heat and some online reviewers claim it's not as durable as other materials, they love how comfortable the chair is. "I’ve had several chairs through the years and never had one I actually looked forward to sitting in like this one," one online reviewer shares.

Featuring a padded armrest, headrest and soft seat, you're guaranteed to be comfortable throughout the workday. Though you do sacrifice some adjustable features with this chair, it comes with a contoured lumbar zone, according to Serta, to support your lower back, and you're able to adjust the chair's height to your liking.

Featuring adjustable lumbar support, a mesh back and adjustable arms, the Ignition 2.0 from HON provides superior support at a fraction of the cost of some premium desk chairs. Krstic , who owns and loves his HON chair, compared it to sitting in a first-class airplane seat as opposed to flying coach.

"As someone who is both broader and taller than most, I can’t get over how well HON designed its seat cushion to be inclusive of people’s body shapes. In standard chairs, I notice that it’s common for armrests to slightly dig into my sides, which isn’t the case of the HON chair."

He finds the lumbar support well-executed and that the adjustable support feature supports his lower back area perfectly. The chair has also proven to be durable; after more than two years of use: "The cushion hasn’t lost its shape or support under my weight and remains very plush and supple," says Krstic. "I feel extremely supported in its very thorough design — even down to the rolling wheels, which work flawlessly despite my larger size."

At the end of the day, his favorite feature is the adjustable height on the seat, which is "greater in length than most other options I’ve seen — I can actually put my feet flat on the ground rather than crisscrossing them, as my legs are very long."

If you own a standing desk or just can't seem to ever get comfortable, this brand stands behind the notion that a saddle seat can help achieve better posture and relieve back pain by allowing the spine to rest in its natural S curve. That's why so many medical professionals use saddle seats .

Not only will this chair's minimalist design stand out in your office, but it enables you to sit in a variety of sitting postures. When we tested the Capisco chair, analysts found the chair versatile and perfect for anyone who can't sit still. You're able to sit forward, backward or sideways, and the chair remains super comfortable while keeping your posture in check.

This desk chair is offered in a variety of fun upholstery materials and colors as well as customizable bases. It's also entirely adjustable so you can find the right height, seat depth and back height for you. Though it doesn't come with armrests, we found that it's easy (and fairly comfortable) to lean your arms against the chair, though it's a bit awkward to sit crosslegged.

The BMW of chairs, this desk chair is made from high-quality materials and offered in luxurious real leather or other fabrics online. As with any premium office chair, its features are adjustable and entirely customizable. While our experts haven't tested this model out in the Lab yet, we agree it's a top pick for anyone with back pain.

"It must be 10 years that I've been using this chair and not only has it supported me as I grow older, it is still in perfect condition," says one longtime owner. Its ergonomic design allows for the spine to be constantly supported in a variety of postures and successfully mimics the natural contours of your body. We also love that the headrest and the recline move with the sitter, minimizing the need for manual adjustments .

IKEA Markus Chair

Markus Chair

You can't really go wrong with IKEA. Though our pros haven't tested the Markus chair in the Lab, we think it's a reliable fit for any home office. It lacks several of the features of some other desk chairs (like adjustable armrests) and has limited color options, but its price is hard to beat, and our experts love the chair's long, mesh back that's suitable for a range of users . With built-in lumbar support and an adjustable height, this no-frills chair is comfortable, breathable and supportive like a favorite pair of jeans.

How we choose the best desk chairs

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, engineers and analysts test home products ranging from furniture to office essentials. While we haven't formally tested each of the desk chairs featured above in our Lab, we've reviewed each pick above for key criteria such as comfort, adjustability and appearance and materials . We also considered feedback from real testers as well as rave consumer reviews.

To select the best desk chairs, writer and analyst Olivia Lipski conducted interviews with orthopedic experts and professionals and collaborated closely with the engineers at the Good Housekeeping Institute to evaluate each chair's overall comfort, construction and design, lumbar support, size and adjustable features.

What to look for when shopping for the best desk chair

linebreak

There are a few key factors to look out for when shopping for the best desk chair, including:

✔️ C omfort and ergonomics: Orthopaedic expert, spine surgeon and spokesperson for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Alan S. Hilibrand, M.D ., says that shopping for a desk chair is similar to shopping for a mattress: "More than anything, it's about personal comfort." He suggests sitting in the chair for five to 10 minutes as you would when testing a bed. "Scoot around and make sure your legs are comfortable," he suggests. If you have the wiggle room in your budget, he recommends getting a chair that can be adjusted and has built-in lumbar support for your lower back and spine. "Generally, consumers should try to pick a chair that matches the sway of their back so it's supported."

✔️ Adjustability: You should always aim to adjust your desk chair to what suits you. "Some chairs have adjustments in terms of how far the back can lean and how far the chair can go up or down," says Hilibrand. These are useful features, but it's most important to adjust the height so you don't sit too low and experience pain from stretching your sciatic nerve. When it comes to armrests, "if you can rest your arms while working at your computer or writing at your desk, that's ideal but it's not crucial," he says.

✔️ Appearance and materials: The style of chair you get is mostly a personal preference. Do you prefer leather? Mesh? Bright pastel colors? Hilibrand shares that he prefers chairs that breathe so you don't feel sweaty, but that it's ultimately a personal preference and you should opt for the materials that feel comfortable to you. Investing in a durable chair that isn't prone to stains and odors is also something to consider. Always double-check the chair's dimensions so it fits your office space.

Tips for sitting properly in a desk chair

linebreak

  • Ensure the proper fit: Even though most of us can’t avoid sitting in a desk chair, there are steps to ensure you’re sitting in your chair properly and not negatively affecting your spine. According to Hilibrand, sitting relatively high is recommended over sitting too close to the floor. " Your feet should touch the ground, but you shouldn't be bending the hips more than 90 degrees ,” he says. Ideally, your lower back is supported but your feet aren't dangling.
  • Take breaks and stand often: It’s important to take breaks throughout the day. Hilibrand recommends "getting up for at least a few minutes every hour to walk around.” If you have the choice between sitting and standing, consider investing in a standing desk or a standing desk converter . "Standing desks are much better for the back and your health," he says, especially if you deal with back pain. But if there's no way to avoid sitting, he suggests propping your legs up on something while you sit. For instance, you can place a ball under one leg or a footstool to relieve some pressure and pain.
  • Adjust as needed: When it comes to desk chairs, there's not a one-size-fits-all. The chair has to fit the individual, which is why being able to adjust it to suit you is so important. Ask yourself: Do you want a headrest to support your neck? How far do you want to recline? Does your lower back feel supported, and if not can you make adjustments?

The best kids' desks 2024: top children's desks for study and play

Find the best kids' desks right here

One of the best kids' desks against a purple TechRadar background

  • Our UK picks

The best kids' desk should help keep the kids productive and motivated. After a long day at school, most kids aren't so keen to do homework, which is certainly valid. However, it has to be done, and they might be encouraged to do so if they've got their own comfortable space to do it in that's distraction-free.

Desks aren't exactly the cheapest "school supply item" on the list, but back to school sales have started to pop up in anticipation of the next school year. So, it's the perfect time to invest, especially if now that it's back to school 2023 and you're also planning on purchasing a new student laptop for your matriculating mini-mes.

Don't let this higher cost of living issue prevent you from investing in your kids. They deserve more than a place at the dining room table or the couch in the TV room to do their homework in and study for a quiz. They deserve a space that's not only free from interruptions, but has everything they need – pens, notebooks, and all the other accessories – within reach.

We've tested more than our share of desks, including standing desks and kids' desks. So, we know a thing or two about what makes the best ones for your maximum productivity and comfort. To help you in your hunt, below are the best kids' desks we've found so far, whether you want a desk-and-chair set, something with drawers, or a more minimalist option.

The best back to school kids' desk sales in the US

  • Amazon: 40% off kids' desk and chair sets
  • Walmart: up to 50% off on desks for kids and teens
  • Target: save big on kids' desks

Vecelo Writing Desk in teal: $69.99 now $54.99 plus a 10% coupon on Amazon

Vecelo Writing Desk in teal: was $69.99 now $54.99 plus a 10% coupon on Amazon Our pick of the best budget kids' desk is even cheaper than ever. Right now, it's discounted 21%, dropping its price down to $55. That's minus the available coupon to give you another 10% off - just be sure to tick the box before you add it to cart. This deal is only available to the teal color, however.

The best kids' desks in the US

1. unicoo bamboo height adjustable kids desk and chair set, specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

This table and desk chair is made of natural bamboo, and while that might not be for everyone, especially those who prefer hardwood, it does mean that this is more durable, lighter, and more eco-friendly. While it is affordable, you're not just getting a set here but also your money's worth thanks to its shelves - it has six compartments total, enough to keep the kids organized and maintain a clean study space.

In addition, both the desk and the chair are height adjustable, although you do need to do so manually, meaning that you have to unscrew some parts to adjust. But that makes it perfect for fast growing kids. The only thing is that the seat itself is a tad small, which means you might have to replace the chair when your kid can't fit in the seat anymore. Although it does say that it fits kids up to 10 years of age.

This enjoys a 4.7 out of 5 rating, with some verified Amazon customers calling it the "best desk ever." So, while we haven't tested it ourselves, we are comfortable to recommend it as the best kids' desk overall on this list.

2. Vecelo Writing Desk

Coming in several shades, including this adorable mint green one pictured above, the Vecelo Writing Desk is a great affordable option for parents looking to save. While it's compact to fit small spaces, it still offers enough desktop space and comes with two shelves for storing things like school supplies, books, and other devices. You also have the option to remove the top shelf to accommodate a desktop PC so you're getting a versatile, if minimalist, option here.

While we haven't tested this desk ourselves, it does enjoy a 4.6 out of 5 option on Amazon, with many reviewers praising it for its easy, fuss-free assembly, compact design, and nice aesthetic. And the company's customer service is very responsive.

The only problem, it seems, is that it isn't packed well, and some customers received a unit damaged during shipping. But, if you like this enough to risk it, this is a great affordable option.

3. Guidecraft Children’s Media Desk and Chair Set

With six colors to choose from, your kids can match their desk and chair set from Guidecraft with their bedroom's decor or simply pick their favorite shade. It's spacious, durable and easy to assemble, according to multiple customers on Amazon. But it does come with a few extras as well.

The most important of those features is its collection of cubbies, which is excellent for storage and organization - we know how messy kids can be, especially elementary and middle school aged ones. Worth mentioning though are the corkboard panel to post their artwork, calendar, and notes, and the handy cutout for cable management.

It's a little on the pricey side, but it is made of solid, engineered wood, which means it will last your child for years. It's great for the price and a good value for your money.

4. Ikea Filsat Children's Desk

This adjustable Filsat table from Ikea is the best kids' desk if you have kids who like to get creative while in their bedrooms, whether it's sketching, painting, writing, sculpture or anything else – it's like giving them their own personal easel to work with, and the desk can grow higher as your youngsters do.

While you can't draw or paint directly on the work surface here, it is easy to clean, and there's a removable roller at the top of the desk that you can attach a roll of paper too. When your kids want some more canvas, they just need to pull down to get another sheet of fresh paper, and away they go again.

The desk can be used for whatever you want of course, but it's definitely geared towards arts and crafts, and the adjustable legs mean you can tilt it too, if required. There is a chair that goes with the desk if you need one, but it's sold separately.

5. Ikea Micke Desk

At first glance this looks like the most ordinary of children's desks, but look a little bit closer and there's a lot to like about the Micke from Ikea – like the hole at the back of the workspace for hiding away cables, or the spacious drawer that slides out underneath (perfect for pens and calculators).

One benefit of the unfussy aesthetics of the Micke desk is that it can fit just about anywhere, into any sort of bedroom setup, and you can get it in three different colours as well: black-brown, oak and white. If you like the look of the unit, then one of those should suit your needs.

This being Ikea, there's plenty more furniture from the same series that you can get to accompany this, including a chair if you need one. Due to the size and the style of the unit, this is more for older children and teenagers rather than the youngest kids.

The best kids' desk sales in the UK: quick links

  • Amazon: 30% off children's desk and chair sets
  • John Lewis: up to 70% off on kids' desks
  • Argos: save big on kids' tables and chairs

Habitat Kids Pagnell 3 Drawers Desk: 20% off with code at ArgosSave 20%:

Habitat Kids Pagnell 3 Drawers Desk: 20% off with code at Argos Save 20%: This desk from Habitat is not only compact, but it’s spacious, too. That’s not an oxymoron. Its three drawers allow for quite a bit of storage so that your child can spread out while doing their work and not worry about finding a place to keep paper, pencils, and just about anything else.

The best kids' desks in the UK

1. nubi 1 drawer pedestal desk.

Perfect for older kids who've moved beyond a need for bright colours and shiny extras, the Nubi 1 Drawer Pedestal Desk is stylish and subtle in a very grown-up way (which might get your youngsters in the mood for getting down to some serious work). You get four shelves (two behind a door), a deep drawer, and a wide top space.

We think the aesthetics of this Nubi desk are going to go with most kids' bedrooms, and it's been designed to look like some of the heavy duty industrial furniture that's proving popular right now. With a clean, open workspace on top, it's up to you (or your child) how you arrange a laptop, books, lamps, and so on.

The flexibility and the form of this unit appeals, with a lot of space underneath the desk as well as on top and it's an easy pick for one of the best kids' desks of 2022. It's a two-person assembly job though, and check the dimensions carefully – it's maybe a bit bigger and more bulky than it appears in the picture.

2. Habitat Kids Pagnell 3 Drawers Desk

School-age kids will appreciate all the organizational compartments the Habitat Kids Pagnell 3 offers; as will, of course, their parents who have to deal with whatever mess they leave behind. Three drawers with smooth metal runners, the bottom being a deeper one, offers plenty of space for their pens, markers, crayons, and papers, leaving its desk top clutter-free.

It's also more spacious than it looks, so whether you've got a school-age kid or one that's a little older, they've got more than enough space to work in. Chair isn't included, unlike some of the desk-and-chair sets on this list. However, if you're looking to save money – and you've already got a chair on hand – this is a great budget kids' desk.

3. Argos Home Scandinavia Pine Desk and Chair

With the Scandinavia Pine Desk and Chair from the Home department of Argos, your kid is going to feel that school vibe, even at home. One for the younger children out there, this is a desk that has a definite classroom feel to it, and the lid also opens up for easy storage of textbooks, pencils, apples and so on.

While the dimensions of this desk aren't going to suit everyone and every situation, the furniture can be placed just about anywhere and even moved around – have it up by the window one day and over in the corner the next day. You've got plenty of options to play around with in terms of location.

As well as the pine version shown in the picture above, you can also get this with a white finish, if that's a better fit for your interior decor. Built from solid wood and with an easy-to-follow assembly process, this is a kids' desk that we think is going to prove very popular during the back to school season.

When I moved to my first shoebox NYC apartment with zero room and not much money, Ikea's 29-inch Micke Desk ($60) was my savior. It squeezed into spaces I never thought it could, gave me enough space to work comfortably, and the drawer fits more than you think.

  • This particular Micke Desk may be small in size, but the included drawer doesn't skimp on space.

  • This is best for anyone in search of a compact desk that won't take up a ton of space.
  • It's particularly useful for anyone in search of a desk to comfortably fit in their bedroom.
