30 Easy 100 Days of School Ideas to Celebrate Students' Momentous Milestones
The collages, shirts and slogans are keeping it 💯.

While these celebrations may seem like a recent trend — or growing in popularity in recent years — they actually date back to 1979, says Allison Wilson, Senior Director of Curriculum and Innovation at Stratford Schools . "This momentous occasion supports young learners in their understanding of the number 100 through the science of counting," she says." Children also have the opportunity to reflect on their learning for the first half of the school year."
And what about all those posters, t-shirts, arrays and other projects that involve 100 items? They help kids understand the concept of 100. "Numbers may sometimes feel abstract," Wilson says. "Research tells us that young learners benefit from working with tangible objects, especially when children are first acquiring the skill of counting. Counting objects also supports grouping objects — by fives, by tens, etc. — to see patterns and relationships between numbers and objects. Designing a poster or shirt may also provide a sense of creativity, ownership and some fun, too!"
But what to choose? Here are some of the best 100 Days of School ideas for creative projects. Some incorporate their favorite characters. Others have clever ways of making the big count easy but breaking things down into 10 groups of 10. Others show off a kid's personality. May they all inspire your young scholar for the next 100 days.

16 Ideas for 100 Days of School
Let’s be real. Celebrating 100 days of school is no joke. The 100th day of school is basically like the Super Bowl of school days. And to be completely honest, it should be! 100 days of school is not only a huge accomplishment for your students, but it’s also a huge accomplishment for you!
Sit back and think about what the past 100 days of school have been like and I mean really think about it. Look at how far your students have come. Look at how much they have learned. They have not only grown so much in their learning, but they also have grown as a person thanks to your amazing guidance. Now think about yourself. Look at how much you have accomplished these past 100 days. I can guarantee you are an even better teacher today than you were 100 days ago. You should be so proud of yourself!

Now that everyone has worked so hard, it’s time to celebrate even harder! Let’s make 100 days of school a day that you and your students will never forget!
I am so excited to share with you some of my favorite 100 days of school ideas. I have recently updated all of my 100th day of school activities and even added quite a few new activities that I can’t wait for you to see!
100th Day of School Wallet
Students get to make their very own wallet and have fun completing different 100 days of school activities to earn $100!
Each time a student completes an activity from the day, they will earn $10. If they complete 10 activities they will earn $100!
How realistic does the money look?? Your students will be so excited and proud of themselves each time they get to add a $10 bill to their wallets.
What is so neat about this wallet is that I made it editable. This allows you to decide what activities you want the students to do on your 100 days of school celebration. Just type the activities that you decide into the form that I have added and the wallets will be made instantly.
Each time students earns $10, they will cross off the activity on their wallet so that they can keep track of what activities they need to complete.
Candy Jar Craft
This new hands-on craft will have your students using dot markers to make a candy jar with 100 candies.
There are 3 different options of candy jars that your students can make.
The first option has students filling in the 100 circles in any order with any color dot marker .
The second option has students dab the numbered circles in order from 1-100. Have them switch to a new dot marker color after every 10 numbers.
The last option is a candy jar challenge. I have created a color code that you can use and also a color code where you can pick the colors to go with the dot markers that you have. Students need to find the numbers in the candy jar and color them the correct color from the code.
100 Words Book
I bet if you asked your students to write 100 words, they might think that there is no way that they can do that! However, your students will not only be amazed but gain so much confidence when they see that they can write 100 words!
This activity is great for whole group practice. They will get to create their very own book with 100 words. Write sight words, names, CVC words, and more! Their 100 days of school books will fill up faster than they would ever imagine because they can do it!
100th Day Mystery Picture
You know how much I love mystery pictures ! My students can never get enough of them so I of course had to include one for our 100 days of school celebration!
Students get to use a color code to reveal a mystery picture on a hundreds chart. I made 2 different options for you to choose from. There is a 100 days of school printable or an interactive mystery picture that you can add to your centers or morning tubs.
100 Days of School Necklace
Your room will quickly smell DELICIOUS with these tasty necklaces! Students get to count out 100 pieces of cereal using a hundreds chart.
Add the cereal to a piece of yarn and turn it into a fashionable and yummy necklace!
100 Days of School Tie
Let’s keep adding more fashion to our outfits during our 100 days of school celebration. This time students get to decorate and wear a fun tie. Choose from using a safety pin or string to wear the tie.

This 100th day of school hat will definitely have each of your students standing out and standing about a foot taller!
Students get to practice writing numbers 1-10 ten times each. That means students write numbers 100 times!
Add those numbers to the 100 days of school hat that students get to create and have so much fun showing them off!
Now and Then Pictures
Are you ready to hear lots of laughs in your classroom? Surprise your students with a picture of them now and a picture of them looking 100 years old! I show you an easy way to make this happen and for your students to be so excited to show everyone what they look like when they are 100 years old!
Check out this now and then picture!
If you aren’t able to get pictures of your students, no worries! This activity can also be completed with students drawing a picture of what they look like now and what they will look like when they are 100 years old.
Have you ever thought about how far 100 steps are? I honestly never had until doing this activity! Ask your students where they predict they would end up if they took 100 steps starting at your classroom door?
Then, test out their predictions by walking 100 steps and placing their footprint onto the wall where they end up. I must say, I was way off on my prediction!
I forgot to mention that I always add different writing options for you to choose from that works best for your students and classroom.
100 Glasses
Make your 100 days of school outfit complete with these fashionable glasses. Students get to make, decorate, and wear these fun 100th day glasses where you literally look out of the number 100!

Students get to make their very own recyclable placemat! Then, they get to count out different foods on the placemat in ten groups of 10.
Last, students will get to take whatever trail mix they have left over home!
Personalized $100 Bills
Ready to see your students jaws drop to the floor? These personalized $100 bills have ALWAYS been a class favorite during our 100th day of school celebration.
I love adding my student’s picture to a realistic looking $100 bill. I like to laminate them before I give it to them so that they can last for a long time! Trust me, seeing your student’s amazement and happiness with this activity alone makes me so excited to make them year after year. You would be shocked to know how easy they are to make!
If I Had $100 Writing
$100 is a lot of money! To a young child, $100 might seem like $1 million dollars! Ask your students what they would buy if they had $100.
Students get to write and draw about what they would do with $100. You will get some adorable and funny responses, but they are all so fun to hear what they would buy.

100 Ideas for 100th Day of School Collections

Developmental Math Concepts

- Individual Collections
- Classroom Celebrations
In elementary school , the 100th day of school is often a day of great celebration, marked with special activities and lessons.
Acknowledging the 100th day is a great way for elementary school teachers to celebrate math concepts that can be taught using the number 100. Asking students to collect and bring in items to be used for these lessons also encourages class participation.
From the very first day, many classes begin keeping track of the number of days they've been in school in anticipation of the 100th day. It's this anticipation that is actually the first math lesson .
The days are often marked using objects like coffee stirrers or Popsicle sticks. Ten of these sticks become a "10 bundle" that will pave the way to counting by tens and ones.
Any 100th-day math activities should be appropriate for the developmental stage of the children in the class. Preschoolers and kindergartners generally don't count past 20, so collections of 100 should focus on bundles or groups of five or 10.
In first grade, children can count to 100. Doing a count-up or count-down is appropriate. By second grade, they can usually count to 100 by twos, fives, or tens, so items can be bundled in different number groupings.
By third grade , kids can often do multiplication and division. But for numbers as large as 100, more complex math problems may not be appropriate until fourth grade.
Class Collections for the 100th Day of School
If the class is planning a 100 Day celebration, your child may be asked to bring in some items to add to the class collection. It's not always practical for each child to bring in 100 of any item. Try to get a sense from your child's teacher of what they have planned.
Students will often be separated into groups, with each group responsible for having a collection of 100 things based on a specific theme.
For instance, one group may be asked to bring in 100 things from the kitchen, which could be foods like dried beans or Cheerios, items like spoons or forks, or a variety of other things. Another group idea could be 100 coins or 100 different office supply items (such as paper clips, pens, and staples).
Whichever way your child's class decides to mark its 100th day of school, be sure you know what the teacher expects and how the items will be used.
Ideas for Individual 100th School Day Collections
Alternatively, your child may be responsible for their own collection of 100 items. They may need to bring them as a display (such as glued onto a board) or they may do a project with them in the classroom. Options include:

Students will enjoy and get a kick out of dressing up to celebrate the 100th day. Invite them to dress as though they are 100 years old. They could come in with baby powder in their hair, a cane, and an old pair of glasses, but they will look adorable.
Let kids get creative as they write about how things will change within the next 100 days of school! Encourage them to make predictions and to set goals for the future. These goals could include practicing math facts or reading more books on the weekend. They can use the fun bucket to illustrate what they write, too!
More fun prompt ideas:

- If I had 100 dollars, I would …
- I wish I had 100 …
- Would you rather have 100 __ or 100 __? (days of rain or days of snow, toys or dollars, pieces of candy or cookies, etc.)

Alternatively, you could cut them out of butcher paper. Using 100 objects, they decorate the shirt to showcase their counting. Have them glue on small items (bells, buttons, pom poms, etc) or place stickers on their shirts. They will enjoy sharing what they come up with and wearing it to show off their collections!
Challenges are a great way to engage students and give them a purpose for their work. These fun 100th-day activities have them thinking they are playing when, in reality, they are learning essential math skills and practicing numbers to 100 . Choose from a wide variety of challenges or add them to centers for students to complete during the day as rotations. The
A celebratory day isn’t complete without a fun hat! Let kids create their own hat craft to get into the 100th day spirit. This easy craft requires just a little cutting and pasting, and then students can parade their work around for the day. Kids get to mark what they learned during the first 100 days of school. Grab this for free craft below!
Being 100 days smarter is so sweet! Have students complete this cute donut craft. Have parents donate donut boxes, ask local stores for a few, or create your own with the included materials. Each student decorates their own donut (or 10) to add to the box to make 100. Have them create a different representation of 10 on each donut, such as dots, hearts, stars, stickers, cereal, and sprinkles.
It’s always fun to do show and tell! Have kids collect 100 items at home and bring them in to share with the class. Send the items in a plastic container or bag. Give them ideas such as buttons, pieces of candy, bottle caps, pom poms, legos, paperclips, and anything else they can think of.
They can then count out their items into groups of ten to create a 100th day collection poster. Let them show their objects to classmates throughout the day.
Kids love reading, so give them a goal to read 100 books! A journal or notebook is a simple way to record the books they read all year long. They will also love having cute bookmarks to commemorate their 100th day of school.
Provide books for them to read, or let them choose from the library or home. Add these books and videos to help with counting to 100 !
Since students have completed 100 days of school, it only makes sense to congratulate them with a colorful 100th Day Certificate! This simple piece of paper will make them feel accomplished, and they will proudly show it off to friends and family. Laminate it so they can cherish it forever!
An activity book can be incorporated into the entire day! Print off the pages and use them during both math and literacy blocks to practice counting to 100 and having fun with numbers to 100 . There are color-by-number pages, race-to-100 games, word searches, and more!

Set up tables around the room with bowls to collect objects for. You’ll want volunteers to help monitor kids as they count the food items. Select 10 different snack items to count out. 100 Days of School Ideas for Upper Elementary
January 23, 2022 by Cristina
Why don’t we get to celebrate the 100th day like the little kids? That’s what a few of my 4th and 5th grade students asked last year. Honestly, I didn’t have an answer, but now there will be no excuse. I’ve put together some fun 100 Days of School ideas for upper elementary together, so we can all have fun this year.
Here are a variety of fun ideas you can incorporate into your classroom to make the day memorable and a day full of valuable lessons.
(This blog post contains Amazon Affiliate links. That means that if you buy a book using a link, Amazon will throw a few pennies my way at no cost to you.)
100 Days of School Classroom Set Up
No need for anything extravagant, but setting up the stage to engage can get students excited for the day.
- Bring in #100 balloons.
- Put up a Happy 100th Day of School poster on the front door or banner on the board.
Theme Ideas
Kids love a good theme and this day will be the perfect excuse to have one.
- T-Shirt: Have students create t-shirts with 100 things on them (ex. buttons, stickers, etc.), and have them come to school wearing it.
- Happy 100th Birthday: Students show up to school dressed as if they were 100 years old.
Snack Ideas
Kids get really excited about snacks, so here are a few fun snack ideas. (As always, make sure your students do not have an allergies to these foods.)
- 100 Grand Candy Bar
- Nabisco 100 Calories Snacks
- 7 packs of Smarties per student (about 15 in each pack making 105…close) and add a note that says 100 Days Smarter.
- a sandwich bag with 1 graham cracker and 2 fudge strip cookies (looks like the number 100) and add a note that says You’re a Smart Cookie … Happy 100th Day of School. You can also substitute for something a bit healthier such as mini bagels with a pretzel stick or crackers.
Infusing some brain break games or indoor recess games will make the day fun and memorable. Have students play any of the following games in pairs.
- Stack 100 plastic cups like a pyramid
- Build a 100 piece puzzle
- 100 seconds challenge – challenge students to different tasks for 100 seconds (ex. standing on one leg, stand like a statue)
Read Aloud Book
I don’t know about you, but I will use any excuse to share a read aloud with my upper elementary students. The 100th day of school is no exception. Many of the picture books that center around 100 are very primary, therefore, today I am sharing a short chapter book. It takes about 40 minutes to read, so you want to split it up. It does have a strong theme about discrimination and is a perfect book for this age group.
- T he H undred Dresses by Eleanor Estes
- Hundredth Day Disaster by Bridgette Reidstad
Student Gift Ideas
- 100th Day of School bookmarks
- A school supply that come in 100s such as notebook paper, stickers, sticky notes, etc.
- Any of the snack options listed previous
100 Days of School ELA Activities
As an upper elementary teacher, we know how important it is to tie the activities to standards, especially with state testing right around the corner. Below are some fun 100 Days of School ELA Activities .
- Have students work with hyperboles. Choose one that has 100 in it. (ex. one hundred and one things)
- Introduce students to the root cent(i) . Have them define different works that include the root in it. (ex. century, centimeter, etc.)
- Challenge them to make a list of 100 parts of speech: 20 nouns, 20 verbs, 20 adjectives, 20 adverbs, and 20 conjunctions. etc.
- Challenge your students to find 100 synonyms for commonly used words such as said, good, and bad.
- Have them write about what they would spend $100 on if they were gifted the money.
- Challenge the class to read 100 books. This can be done in one day by having each student choose a handful of picture books to read. Another way to implement this is to have students start recording books that they are reading and have see if the class can reach 100 books by the end of the year.
Brain Break or Just for Fun Ideas
- Have students participate on the “Not a 100” drawing challenge. Have them draw a large 100 on a paper and turn that 100 into something else in a drawing.
- Challenge them to see how many words they can come up with by using the letters in ONE HUNDRED DAYS. Want to make it more challenging? Give them just 100 seconds.

100 Days of School Ideas for Preschoolers
- brightwheel
As educators, you are constantly seeking creative ways to engage your young learners and make every day of school a memorable experience. One milestone that holds great significance in many preschools is the celebration of the 100th day of school. This special occasion not only marks a major achievement for your little ones, but it also provides an opportunity to reinforce essential early learning concepts.
Remember that your children might not quite understand the concept of 100, so it’s important to find age-appropriate activities to help them process this milestone. Get creative!
Need some inspiration? Try the following hands-on projects, games, and interactive activities that will captivate children's imaginations as you celebrate the 100th day of school.
Math activities
Since the day's theme is all things 100, you can use your celebration to further develop your children’s early math and counting skills. Here are some activities to consider:
100 snack pieces
The 100th day of school cannot be complete without a tasty snack. Instruct your children to separate their snacks into groups of ten, then demonstrate how these groups add up to 100 pieces.
Collect 100 items
Inform families of the big day, then ask them to help you collect 100 small items by sending their child to school with a certain amount. For example, you can ask them to collect 100 buttons, pieces of candy, stickers, cheerios, spaghetti noodles, paper clips, pretzels, or any other small item.
Glue the items to a poster board to help your children visualize what the number 100 looks like.
100 hungry ants
This is a perfect group activity for children. Hide 100 fake, plastic ants in different areas in the classroom, then ask the children to retrieve them.
Make the hiding places easily accessible so children can find the ants. Consider areas like the sink, under the potty, within their toys, or any areas available to children during classroom time. As they collect the ants, tally the growing number on the whiteboard.
Snack and party
Turn the big day into a celebration with a 100 theme. Bring balloons, buy cups or napkins with 100 printed on them, or serve snacks in groups of 100. Focus on small finger foods like jellybeans, M&Ms, grapes, and cheese cubes. Split the snacks among the class.
Alternatively, you can ask parents to send children to school with pretzel sticks and circular crackers (like Ritz or Oreo.) Create the number 100 by placing two crackers next to a pretzel stick.
Scavenger hunt
Embark on a scavenger hunt with your children and help them find 100 items. Include anything like candies, pencils, or crayons. Instruct the children to work in groups to help them build their social, counting, and teamwork skills.
Reading and movement activities
The 100th day of school can also be an opportunity to help children practice their emergent literacy skills . Incorporate music and movement to promote physical development and reinforce language skills. Here are some activities to try:
Read a 100 days themed book
Several children's literature authors have come on board to help children celebrate their 100th day of school . Initiate a circle time session with the children, then read some themed books focused on this day. You can also ask questions at the end to test their comprehension skills.
Take 100 steps in the classroom
Ask the children to take 100 steps around the classroom. Make fun predictions about how far across the room they can get. You can also try hopping or dancing for 100 seconds.
Write a 100-word story
Create a collaborative story as a class. Have each child contribute one word at a time until the story contains 100 words.
Sing preschool songs
Singing songs can be a simple way to engage your class and teach new concepts at the same time. Incorporate 100 days of school-themed songs or try other educational songs that help children memorize vocabulary or count to 100.
Sight word challenge
Create a list of common sight words. Have the children read words until they reach 100 sight words.
Hands-on activities
Children often learn best through doing. With hands-on activities that involve touching and manipulating items, children can practice their fine motor skills and express themselves creatively.
Fruit loop necklaces
This is a great fine motor challenge. Provide 100 fruit loops to each child and have them lace them together on a string. Separate every ten fruit loops by color to make it easier for children to count to 100.
Make a 100th day of school poster
This is a great fine motor challenge. Encourage the children to decorate a poster board with you. Make it as colorful as possible while incorporating the concept of 100. Decorate the classroom entrance with your poster. Check out these posters for inspiration.
Photo booth
Create a simple photo booth backdrop using a foam or poster board decorated with the number 100 and other symbols. You can also create or purchase props for the children to hold while posing.
Cut out 100 shapes from pieces of paper or poster board, then have the children decorate or color them throughout the day. Next, attach these shapes to a large poster, then hang your new art piece in the classroom.
Get a large piece of paper or poster board that can fit 100 handprints. To practice, give the children smaller pieces of paper to trace their hands or practice making a handprint using paint.
One by one, instruct the children to make prints on the larger piece of paper. Use different paint or pencil colors to make your poster colorful and bright. Teachers can join in as well!
Pom pom butterflies
Draw a giant butterfly on a big piece of paper and ask your children to stick pom poms onto the drawing. Count the poms in advance to ensure they add up to 100.
Partnering with families
Collaborating with families to celebrate the 100th day of preschool can be an exciting way to enrich the educational experience and foster a strong connection between home and school. Inviting parents and guardians to participate in the festivities can create an inclusive and supportive learning environment for your young learners.
Sharing the planned activities for the 100th day with families in advance is one way to involve them. This enables parents to discuss and reinforce the concepts with their children, ensuring a seamless transition between home and school. Additionally, it allows them to witness the excitement and enthusiasm that fills the classroom, strengthening their connection to the school community.
Celebrating the 100th day of school is a wonderful opportunity for families and schools to unite and enhance every child's educational journey. This partnership can take many forms, such as shared reading activities, collaborative crafts, or simple conversations about the milestone's significance. By actively participating in their child's early education, families can instill a sense of pride and belonging in children, nurturing a sense of unity and shared purpose between school and home.
Celebrate this big milestone with exciting activities
The 100th day of school is a significant event that can make learning more exciting and memorable. By involving your preschoolers in creative activities that focus on this special milestone, you can create lasting memories and teach valuable skills and knowledge in a fun and engaging way. These activities, ranging from counting to storytelling, will encourage a love for learning that will remain with your children long after the day has ended.

Doing school projects allows students to use what they learn in real, hands-on ways. Working on projects, alone or with others, helps students build useful skills for college and future jobs. Some main benefits of fully taking part in school projects are:
- Learning time management and planning
Projects require breaking big jobs into steps and making schedules to finish different parts. This teaches students how to organize time and prioritize tasks.
- Practicing teamwork
Group projects teach students to work well with others, take on roles, and deal with relationships. These skills are important in most professional settings.
- Gaining practical abilities
Projects allow students to use tools, instruments, software, or hands-on materials to make products, models, presentations, etc. This gives them direct experience applying what they learn.
- Improving research and critical thinking
Projects often involve finding information from different sources and analyzing evidence to conclude. This builds analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Developing communication
Presenting or explaining projects requires organizing and sharing information and ideas. This helps improve public speaking, writing, and listening skills.
- Building confidence
Meeting project goals and making high-quality deliverables gives students a sense of accomplishment and belief in themselves. This motivates more effort and success.
In short, fully taking part in school projects gives benefits beyond just learning academic material. It helps prepare students for success in further education, work, and life. The hands-on practice from projects is precious.
Closing Up
School projects allow students to show creativity while building important academic and life abilities. The 120 project ideas in this blog post are meant to engage students’ imagination and interests across subjects and grade levels.
From designing their cities to putting on a mock trial to making algorithms for a video game, these projects give students chances to apply critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and technical skills in fun, hands-on ways.
Teachers can mix and match ideas that fit their curriculum goals and students’ needs. While projects take planning and effort from both teachers and students, the learning benefits make it worthwhile. Students can deepen their knowledge through real experience and feel proud of what they creatively accomplish.
The projects they work on will leave lasting impressions and prepare them for future academic and career work that requires innovative thinking and products. In summary, including creative projects in learning is a worthwhile investment that pays off in getting students engaged, building skills, and preparing them for the real world.
The ideas in this post can spark project-based learning that motivates students while giving them skills for lifelong success.
What are some good projects for beginner creators or students who don’t think they are very creative?
Start with simple designs, recipes, structures, or technology projects. Focus on following instructions rather than original ideas. Creativity grows with practice.
How much guidance should teachers provide versus letting students figure things out?
Give students a goal and basic requirements, but let them make many choices. Too much guidance limits creative problem-solving. Periodic check-ins help keep them on track.
Do students need access to expensive technology or materials to do creative projects?
Not necessarily. Every day recycled items can become building materials. Online programs like Scratch let students create games and animations. Creativity stems from ideas, not just resources.

Black History Month 2024: African Americans and the Arts
The national theme for Black History Month 2024 is “ African Americans and the Arts .”
Black History Month 2024 is a time to recognize and highlight the achievements of Black artists and creators, and the role they played in U.S. history and in shaping our country today.
To commemorate this year’s theme, we’ve gathered powerful quotes about learning, culture and equality from five historic Black American authors, teachers and artists who made a significant impact in the Arts, education ― and the nation.
Making history
“Real education means to inspire people to live more abundantly, to learn to begin with life as they find it and make it better.” – Carter G. Woodson, Author, Journalist, Historian and Educator, 1875-1950
Known as the “Father of Black History,” Carter G. Woodson was primarily self-taught in most subjects. In 1912, he became the second Black person to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard.
He is the author of more than 30 books, including “T he Mis-Education of the Negro. ”
Carter G. Woodson dedicated his life to teaching Black History and incorporating the subject of Black History in schools. He co-founded what is now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc. (ASALH) . In February 1926, Woodson launched the first Negro History Week , which has since been expanded into Black History Month.
Providing a platform
“I have created nothing really beautiful, really lasting, but if I can inspire one of these youngsters to develop the talent.” – Augusta Savage, Sculptor, 1892-1962
An acclaimed and influential sculptor of the Harlem Renaissance, Augusta Savage was a teacher and an activist who fought for African American rights in the Arts. She was one out of only four women, and the only Black woman, commissioned for the 1939 New York World’s Fair. She exhibited one of her most famous works, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which she named after the hymn by James Weldon Johnson, sometimes referred to as the Black National Anthem. Her sculpture is also known as “ The Harp, ” renamed by the fair’s organizers.
Raising a voice
“My mother said to me ‘My child listen, whatever you do in this world no matter how good it is you will never be able to please everybody. But what one should strive for is to do the very best humanly possible.’” – Marian Anderson, American Contralto, 1897-1993
Marian Anderson broke barriers in the opera world. In 1939, she performed at the Lincoln Memorial in front of a crowd of 75,000 after the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) denied her access to the DAR Constitution Hall because of her race. And in 1955, Marian Anderson became the first African American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera. She sang the leading role as Ulrica in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera.
Influencing the world
“The artist’s role is to challenge convention, to push boundaries, and to open new doors of perception.” – Henry Ossawa Tanner, Painter, 1859-1937
Henry Ossawa Tanner is known to be the first Black artist to gain world-wide fame and acclaim. In 1877, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts , where he was the only Black student. In 1891, Tanner moved to Paris to escape the racism he was confronted with in America. Here, he painted two of his most recognized works, “ The Banjo Lesson” and “ The Thankful Poor of 1894. ”
In 1923, Henry O. Tanner was awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government, France’s highest honor.
Rising up
“Wisdom is higher than a fool can reach.” – Phillis Wheatley, Poet, 1753-1784
At about seven years old, Phillis Wheatley was kidnapped from her home in West Africa and sold into slavery in Boston. She started writing poetry around the age of 12 and published her first poem, “ Messrs. Hussey and Coffin ,” in Rhode Island’s Newport Mercury newspaper in 1767.
While her poetry spread in popularity ― so did the skepticism. Some did not believe an enslaved woman could have authored the poems. She defended her work to a panel of town leaders and became the first African American woman to publish a book of poetry. The panel’s attestation was included in the preface of her book.
Phillis Wheatley corresponded with many artists, writers and activists, including a well-known 1 774 letter to Reverand Samson Occom about freedom and equality.
Honoring Black History Month 2024
Art plays a powerful role in helping us learn and evolve. Not only does it introduce us to a world of diverse experiences, but it helps us form stronger connections. These are just a few of the many Black creators who shaped U.S. history ― whose expressions opened many doors and minds.
Black History Month is observed each year in February. To continue your learning, go on a journey with Dr. Jewrell Rivers, as he guides you through Black History in higher education. Read his article, “A Brief History: Black Americans in Higher Education.”

Dhofar launches contest to convert youth ideas into projects
Salalah – Dhofar governorate, in collaboration with Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Oman Development Bank and the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (ASMED), has started a competition called Qeemah (Value).
This initiative aims to nurture youth creativity, transforming innovative ideas into tangible projects that contribute to the local economy and sustainability.
Outlining the objectives of Qeemah, an official of the governorate said it is focused on enhancing local value addition, fostering innovation and creating pioneering projects leveraging local resources and talent. “The contest seeks to uncover and develop national products and services, capitalise on competitive advantages for economic stability, and uplift innovation within Dhofar governorate. It also aims to find sustainable solutions and tap into the potential of local talents and communities,” the official stated.
Open to all – creative individuals, innovators, entrepreneurs and university students in the governorate – Qeemah aims to identify the best innovative and sustainable ideas and solutions, transforming these into practical projects in three distinct categories.
The Wilayat Category is focused on innovations in natural resources, traditional crafts and local products from the wilayats of Dhofar for both local and international markets. The Corporate Category is designed for development and implementation of creative, innovative and sustainable solutions by large companies and institutions, while the Nakheel Dhofar Category is focused on production, packaging and sale of coconuts in and outside the governorate.
Through the competition, Dhofar seeks to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs and innovators, providing a platform for their ideas to flourish and contribute positively to the local and global markets.
