Insider Today

When it comes to juggling classes, weekend plans, and long-term goals in college, using a paper planner is never a bad idea. For one, physically writing down information is shown to improve your memory , which comes in handy for keeping track of due dates and extracurricular events throughout the year.

The other benefit of writing in a physical academic planner is it gives you a screen-less space to reflect on your goals, cross off finished homework, and organize your life. With the variety of planners out there, you can find everything from simple daily planners for easy scheduling to journals focused on time management or habit-tracking. And if you decide to get one in the middle of the academic year, there are plenty of undated versions, too.

The 5 best academic planners for college students in 2022:

Which one is the right planner for me?

The good news about having so many academic planners to choose from is that there’s bound to be one that works best for you. And while there’s no special formula and certainly no “right” answer when choosing the perfect planner, below are three of the most important things you should keep top of mind to help you find the best fit.

First, do you prefer to plan by month, week, or day? Think about the level of detail you want to capture in your planner. For example, I was always a big fan of using daily planners to lay out my schedule hour-by-hour. Others may only need to see a weekly view for a higher level, big-picture understanding of their responsibilities and tasks. Be sure to pay attention to which layouts are included in the planners you choose to explore.

7 Best Academic Planners for College Students in 2023

Secondly, are you a minimalist planning type or someone who loves the extra bonuses of using a planner? I’m talking about motivational quotes, inspiration, space to add stickers and other memories (similar to a bullet journal) , and all the good stuff. If you prefer clean pages and using space strictly for planning purposes , look for a planner that won’t distract you with extras so you can focus on what truly matters to you. If you prefer the fluffy stuff, keep that in mind when reviewing planner options.

And finally, think about what size planner works best for you! I loved 8.5” x 11” sized planners because I had extra room to write and take notes. One semester I tried to move to a smaller size and hated it. Determine what makes the most sense for you, and if anything, go bigger than you think you need so you have extra room.

Get your planning on!

Grab your planner and get ready for a great semester! You’ll be off and tackling your busy schedule in no time. We hope this blog post helps you find the best planner for you. Which one will you be trying out this semester? Let us know in the comments!

101 Planners

College Student Planner

Free digital or printable college student planner to get you organized both at school and after school and to help you study.

student planner

I graduated years ago and yet I still have nightmares that I didn’t prepare for an exam or I have an assignment to submit that isn’t ready. College is stressful with so many commitments, deadlines, things to remember, and on top of all of that you most probably want a social life. If you are not organized, things will fall through the cracks. Assignments won’t be ready on time and you will find yourself cramming for exams with not enough time to finish the material. The only way to stay on top of homework, assignments, tests, and other commitments is by planning meticulously and staying organized. It will save you time and headaches and keep you calm so you can enjoy what should be a fun and exciting period of your life that you will look back on for years to come.

One of the reasons that I did well in law school was that I always used planners to get and stay organized. I used those same planners when I did my MBA years later and they proved helpful yet again.

I am happy to share my college student planner with you and I hope that it can help you as much as it helped me. There are different versions for each page so you can mix and match planner pages to create the perfect college planner for your needs. This is a 12-month academic year calendar and you can start any month you want.

There is also an additional and optional section to prevent procrastination, help you study less, and get more done.

If this is not the ultimate student planner for you then see the best planners for college .

Student Planner | College Planner

These are some of the pages in the free digital and printable student planner. With the printable college planner, you can print as many copies of each page as you need. You don’t have to print pages that you don’t need. With the digital version, you have binder dividers with links to every page in the planner.

College student planner

This is the cover page , class info, class schedule (to keep track of your schedule), and course and credit tracker.

text book tracker

There is a two-paged college list in the planner to help you pack. See college packing list for more formats you can download.

There is a section for each month with a daily planner , weekly planner , monthly planner , study tracker, assignment tracker, homework tracker , project planner, essay planner and a to-do list . If you don’t want daily and weekly planning pages then you can delete pages on the digital planner or not print them on the printable academic year planner.

The calendars are available in daily, weekly and monthly formats to help you plan your days and weeks. You can use the monthly calendar to plan ahead when you need to schedule exams or assignments.

Monthly planners

Many of the sections are unique to an academic planner such as a study tracker, assignment tracker, essay planner, project planner, etc. Add the due dates of assignments in the month they are due or the month during which you want to prepare them. Whatever works for you.

Keep track of important dates such as exams, assignments, and extracurricular activities in the monthly calendar so you can see the bigger picture. The monthly overview is an important tool to ensure you are organized and help you with time management.

If you don’t check your schedule on a regular basis then set notifications on your phone so you don’t forget to submit papers or study for exams.

notes, sketches and checklist

There are note pages, space for sketches, and checklists. Use these sections to draw things like a vision board , mind map, class tracker, etc.

The advantage of a DIY planner is that you can totally customize each section to meet your specific needs. There are sections on the site that you might want to add to your planner.

A daily planner , weekly planner , monthly planner , homework tracker (there is one in the planner but this section has more options), goal planner and goal tracker , gratitude list or gratitude journal , password log , and a to-do list .

The college planner includes 12 months and has tabs from January to February. You can start your year any month and continue for 12 months. For example, if you want to start in July 2023 and end in June 2024 then click on the July tab to start and keep going until June.

You can add pages from other planners such as a habit tracker , self-care section, goal planner sheets, morning routine , etc.

Is there a way to change the name of the tabs because I want to delete some of the pages and things I don’t need and I’d like the months to be on the right side instead of the bottom, like switched, for the student planner.

Hi Carmina, There isn’t really a way to change the name of the tabs (unless you write on them). You might find one of the other digital planners better for your needs.

After going through four years of college and way more than four planners, I realized my issue was the fact that I wasn't using an academic planner. 12. Rocketbook Academic Planner

Have you ever heard of this super high tech reusable notebook? You use a special pen to take notes and then you can upload all of your notes to your computer through an app. That would be soooo helpful in college when you have to submit everything online.

“Use the Rocketbook App to blast your notes to the Cloud then magically wipe your notes clean with a damp cloth. Erase and reuse to get straight A’s semester after semester”

COLLEGE PLANNER Q&A

What planner is best for college students.

I may be biased, but I really believe the BSL College Daily Planner is the best planner on the market for college students. I designed it so carefully alongside other college students and it truly is perfect. We made sure to include every single thing a college student will need to stay organized and on top of everything their days throw at them.

Should I use a planner in college?

I HIGHLY recommend using a planner in college. When I tell you you will have a lot on your plate, I'm not kidding. Not only will you have a million school assignments with due dates and test dates, you will also have a social life to balance that you will need to fit in. You 100% will need a planner of some sort.

How many college students use a planner?

While I don't have an exact number to give you, I can tell you that almost every single of the successful college students I knew and know now use a planner. If I were to give you a rough estimate, I would say that about 80% of college students use a planner of some sort.

How do you organize college planners?

I like to organize my college planner by using time blocking for the week days and a simple to-do checklist for my assignments and errands. I also like long term planning in my college planner to visualize my due dates throughout the year.

Do planners really help students?

Short answer: YES. Long answer: planners are literally the only thing that I think can effectively help students organize and prioritize their to-do's. Always write it down, that's just my motto in life.

What do you write in a college planner?

I put pretty much everything in my college planner. I scheduled out everything from classes to doctor's appointments to parties. Basically, if something was happening in my life, it was in my planner!!

This post was all about the best college planners.

Are you on the lookout for the best student planner app of 2023? We’ve got you covered with the all-inclusive review!

Students have a lot on their plates — exams, coursework, tutorials, and projects all clog up their schedules. Then there’s your social life, familial obligations, and work.

How can you manage everything and still have fun?

Here’s the thing: The more organized you are with your time, the less stressed you’ll be. One study about nursing students found that better time management skills  were linked to reduced stress and anxiety.

So, how do you improve your time management? Of course, you could write everything down, but who carries a physical student day planner these days?

That’s where planner apps for students come in.

Today, you have tons of laptop and mobile software to choose from to keep your entire academic, professional, and personal life organized. A planner app allows you to take your student planner online.

Read on to learn some typical features of the best online planners for students and our top picks, including:

  • myHomework Student Planner App
  • Power Planner
  • iStudiez Pro

What Is a Student Planner App?

A student planner app is a downloadable tool that helps students manage their calendars and tasks in one place. An entrepreneur or lawyer might have a secretary to keep them organized — planner apps for students work similarly but without the labor costs.

You can conveniently access planner apps from computers and mobile devices, allowing you to customize task details and descriptions from anywhere.

While different apps might have unique features, here are some things the best student planner apps should have:

  • Calendar views
  • Customizable layouts and colors
  • Multiple project views
  • Reminder alerts and notifications
  • Deadlines and due dates
  • Progress and time tracking
  • Tasks and subtasks
  • Recurring tasks

Are student planner apps worth it.

If you mean “worth the price,” the answer is almost always yes. The best student planner apps have completely free versions, so there’s no harm in giving them a try.

Your personal, professional, and academic lives are demanding, so a helping hand in keeping things organized is worth the download.

But some software might feel more overwhelming than helpful. Here are a few important factors to consider when deciding on an online student planner:

The best planner apps for students should include the following:

  • Customizable views
  • Tag and sorting features
  • Notifications and alerts
  • User-friendly interface
  • Progress insights
  • Time tracking

7 Best Student Planner Apps

Perhaps you’re on a tight budget or can only access apps on your laptop. No problem — we’ve compiled the best student planner apps, complete with pricing, OS compatibility, and features.

Let’s dive in!

1. Calendly

Best student planner app—Screenshot of Calendly's website with a peak into the calendar view

Calendly is a global, omni-channel scheduling app for individuals and teams. Over 10 million people use it, including companies like Google and eBay.

Students can connect Calendly with other apps and calendars, such as Google Calendar and Microsoft 365. It’s particularly helpful for students involved in frequent group projects, as they can use Calendly to toggle invitations and availability in one place.

The free version is more than enough for a college student , but you can really pump up automation with the premium paid version.

While Calendly might be one of the best calendar apps for students, it feels more suitable for professional teams and business owners. The downside — you don’t get as many of the task planning features offered on other apps on our list. Entrepreneurs might need Calendly’s easy collaborative scheduling for clients, but some students wouldn’t need that feature.

  • Features:  Routing forms, workflows, team scheduling, availability preferences
  • Best for: Frequent meetings and group work
  • OS: Desktop, Android, and iOS
  • Basic: Free
  • Essentials: $8/month
  • Professional: $12/month
  • Teams: $16/month

Todoist screenshot showing daily list views for events

There’s something so satisfying about crossing things off a list. The online version of that would be Todoist, a to-do list planning app.

Students can organize their calendar events, projects, and homework in multiple visualizations, like calendar view and Kanban boards. We also love how you can prioritize tasks with highlights.

Todoist isn’t just a place to organize lists.  You can track time for study sessions and view productivity insights to improve your study flows. The app has an impressive 8.9/10 rating on TrustRadius with minimal bad reviews.

The only downside we could think of is that the free version might not be able to manage everything on a student’s plate.

  • Features:  Quick task and subtask adds, recurring tasks, prioritization, notifications, tags, filters
  • Best for: Time tracking and task categories
  • OS: Desktop, Android, iOS
  • Starters: Free
  • Pro: $4/month
  • Business: $6/month

3. myHomework Student Planner App

myHomework app website home page

Don’t be fooled by the basic website. Established in 2009, myHomework Student Planner App has a strong reputation among students and teachers. The app has a 4.5/5-star rating on Apple, with almost 4,000 reviews.

The interface is simple and intuitive , with a calendar view for all your homework and tests that you can filter by teacher or theme. Each task comes with an automatic reminder should you need it, so there’s no need to create separate ones for each task.

Some students lament the app’s lack of integration features with Google Calendar and other apps, though most reviews state the app gets the job done.

Another downside is the free version’s ads, which can get annoying.

  • Features:  Homework widgets, project and task tracking, device syncing
  • Best for: Syncing multiple devices
  • OS: Desktop, Windows, iPad, macOS, Android
  • Premium: $4.99/month

4. Power Planner

Power Planner app views

Power Planner has one of the most visually appealing mobile layouts out of all the apps on our list. The intuitive layout, complementary and customizable colors, and convenient agenda view make it easy to stay on top of all your tasks. We think this is the best planner app for students free of charge — the complimentary version has everything you need.

And if you’re a super planner and predictor? This app has a motivating “what if?” feature that shows you the grades you need to get to reach certain GPAs.  You’ll also enjoy automatic reminders, regular updates, and ultimate organization with Power Planner.

P.S. The app has an impressive 4.6/5 average rating on the Google App Store.

  • Features:  “What if” GPA scenarios, calendar and agenda views, automatic reminders
  • Best for:  Predicting grades
  • Premium: $1.99/month

5. Easy Study

Study insights from Easy Study app

Need help finding the motivation to study? Easy Study is a great way to get in the zone.

All you need to do is add your subjects, plan your study time for each one, and boom — the app creates a tailored, customizable plan for you. The most satisfying part is checking off different tasks for each study session.

The daily statistics are also a serious plus. You can view how much time you dedicated to each subject as a percentage-based circular chart and even add overall goals.

One downside we noticed is the frequent customer complaints about bugs. However, it looks like the company does its due diligence with frequent updates.

  • Features:  Notifications, study history insights, subject categories, goals
  • Best for:  Automatic study plans
  • OS:  Android, iOS
  • Basic : Free
  • Plus Monthly : $2.99
  • Plus Semiannually : $14.99
  • Plus Annually : $26.99

6. Evernote

Evernote home page screenshot

Evernote is a fantastic note-taking app. It’s not as popular for scheduling and calendar management, but hey — a large part of college planning happens within your courses, too.

Evernote helps you plan your notes through efficient templates, to-do lists, web clippings, and more.  Unfortunately, many users complain that the free version leaves much to be desired, with limited devices and a lack of reminders or due dates.

The good news? Students can access either a 50% discount on a one-year Personal subscription plan, including due dates, large storage capabilities, extensive search functions, Google Calendar syncs, and more.

If you’re feeling really fancy and collaborative, splurge on the Teams version (or ask a family member to gift it to you).

We think this is the best student planner app for managing multiple aspects of life — categories like professional and personal goals, vacation planning, and even pets complement your academic plans quite nicely.

  • Features:  Reminders, due dates, integrations, note-taking , web clipping, to-do lists
  • Best for:  Managing notes
  • OS:  Windows, macOS, iPhone, Android
  • Evernote Free: $0
  • Evernote Personal: $14.99/month
  • Evernote Professional: $17.99/month
  • Evernote Teams: $24.99/user/month

7. iStudiez Pro

Screenshot of iStudiez Pro home page

iStudiez Pro is a versatile planner app that helps you see homework, exams, assignments, and course schedules in one clear view. Easy, checkable boxes for tasks are categorized by course — the half-picture views let you manage tasks while still seeing your schedule for the day.

Students love the user-friendly interface for most devices, though some complain the iPhone views aren’t as clear as on the iPad.

You can also track grades for every assignment and task , allowing you to easily keep track of your GPA as you go through the semester.

  • Features:  Alarms, syncing, integrations, calendar, grades, bird’s eye schedule views, GPA tracking
  • Best for:  Managing homework tasks
  • OS:  Windows, macOS, iOS, Android
  • Premium: $2.99/month for mobile
  • Desktop versions: $9.99/month

Tips for making the most of student planner apps.

There are a few differences between a regular app and the best student planner app for college students — but the most important isn’t the type  of app. It’s how you use it.

Here are some tips to help you maximize organization and efficiency from student planner apps:

1. Plan Out Your Week

Saturday, Sunday, or Monday are all great days to plan your week. Take some time to plug in all of your week’s courses, classes, tasks, projects, and commitments. This should save you the hassle of adding things ad hoc and forgetting important due dates. You might also consider plugging in grades for different assignments if you’re working with an app that tracks your GPA.

2. Sort, Sort, Sort

Most of the apps on our list have categorization, tagging, and sorting features. Take time to categorize every task to search for related items easily.

3. Customize Your Layout and Colors

Who says planning has to be dull? Have fun with your student planner apps by customizing colors, fonts, and layouts.

Are you strictly a calendar-type organizer? Great, leave the app on the calendar view.

Are you more of a visual organizer? Perhaps a Kanban board is more your style!

Being a student isn’t easy, but modern technology offers a helping hand. We’ve given you a comprehensive list of the best student planner apps on the market. This should provide more opportunities for students to embrace remote learning while providing fantastic support for managing school-life balance.

Looking for more ways to stay organized?  Check out our article about How to Prepare for Grad School !

1. Are School Planner Apps Free?

Many student planner apps are free, though they might have premium paid versions with more features. A free student planner app usually has enough features to manage your calendar adequately.

2. What is the Best Student Planner App?

Many students love Power Planner and Todoist, but it’s all subjective. The best student planner app depends on your specific needs and preferences.

You might prefer a super user-friendly, visually appealing app with graph insights on time management. Or, you might be satisfied with a simple calendar view organizing your schedule.

3. Is Google Calendar Good for Students?

Certainly, Google Calendar is a great student planning app due to its widespread familiarity. You’re probably already somewhat versed in Google Calendar if you use Gmail. Moreover, the app is easy to use, allowing you to create new projects or events from your iPhone, Android, or computer with a few easy taps. Google Calendar also gives you push notifications to remind you of approaching deadlines and events.

I completely agree with the inclusion of Trello in this list! I’ve been using it for my academic planning and it’s been a game changer. The flexibility of the boards and the ability to set deadlines and reminders has helped me stay on top of my work and stay organized. Best Planner for College Students: Top 6 Reviewed

The best planner for college students in 2022.

Looking for the best planner for college students?

I have rounded up the top five college student planners and reviewed them all to help you find the perfect planner for yourself.

Quick little confession I have to make: I’m planner-obsessed.

My planner pretty much never leaves my sight. When I was in college, I had my planner with me basically every second of the day and I was always using it.

I credit my planner obsession with keeping me extremely organized during college. I kept track of  everything  in my planner during college, whether it was academics, activities, internships, or general life.

A planner is one of the best organizational tools you can have during college.

Below you will find my detailed reviews of the best planners for college students, along with the best planner accessories and my tried-and-true tips for getting the most out of your planner in college.

1. Lilly Pulitzer Agenda

The Lilly Pulitzer Agenda is the planner I used throughout the last year of high school, all of college, and now into my post-grad years!

Yep, I have been using this planner for over six years now and I love it!

Best Planner for College Students

Since I have personally used this planner for years, I can confidently recommend it as what I would consider to be the best planner for college.

Here are some important details about this planner:

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 6 3/4″ x 8 7/8″ (Large Agenda)

What’s Inside

  • 17-month agenda
  • Weekly and monthly calendar pages
  • Dates to remember pages
  • Travel journal and note pages
  • 2 sheets of stickers
  • Reinforced interior pocket

My Thoughts

This is my number one pick for the best planner for college students.

One thing to note, the Lilly Pulitzer agenda comes in three sizes: Jumbo, Large, and Medium. I always get the Large (dimensions listed above) and have found it to be the perfect size to slip into my purse or backpack. It’s also their best-selling size. The Jumbo seems a little too big and the Medium seems too small.

Here’s a video comparing the sizes and showing what’s inside the planner:

Another thing I love about this planner is the design. It might sound crazy, but the seeing the classic, colorful, beachy Lilly Pulitzer designs throughout the pages of my planner just makes me feel happy and energized.

The layout of this planner is very straightforward and easy to use. I stayed soooo organized in college thanks to this planner and I think it’s the perfect choice for all college students. Not to mention it’s just super cute!

2. The Centered Student Planner

college student daily planner

What’s inside

  • August 2022 – July 2023
  • Monthly layouts for long term planning
  • Horizontal weekly layouts with time blocks
  • Weekly positive psychology prompts to increase happiness
  • Weekly college success tips that follow the rhythm of a typical semester
  • A 50 page pad of weekly “To Do” lists
  • QR code for access to exclusive video content
  • Movable bookmark
  • Notes Pages
  • Reinforced back pocket
  • Elastic band closure

3. Erin Condren Academic Planner

The Erin Condren Academic Planner is my second recommendation for the best planner for college students.

Best Planner for College Students

This planner is extremely popular and one of Erin Condren’s best-selling planners. It’s specifically designed with college students in mind.

While I did not personally use this planner in college, I know some of my fellow organization-obsessed friends had it and they really liked it. Erin Condren planner fans REALLY love their planners and they have a big fan base.

Here are the basic details about this planner:

  • Dimensions: 7″ x 9″
  • Class schedule pages
  • Detailed pages for projects and exams
  • Inspirational quotes and notes pages throughout
  • 12-month dated calendar spreads
  • Weekly spreads for each week of the year
  • 4 note pages after each monthly calendar
  • Sticker sheet (60 stickers total)
  • Optional 40 additional lined pages

Overall, this is a great college student planner.

One thing I really love about this planner is that you have the option to personalize it with your name embossed on the front for no added cost.

This planner also has SO many cover options to choose from so you’re not limited with the design (and you can even use your own cover at no added cost.)

You can choose between spiral-bound and soft-bound. I personally recommend spiral-bound. You can choose the color of the spirals for an added cost.

Oh, and one last thing – STICKERS! You get a whole big page of stickers to add to your planner pages, which is a biggie for me.

4. Day Designer for Blue Sky Academic Planner

The Day Designer for Blue Sky Academic Planner is a great option for college students who want a planner oriented around “designing” their days.

Best College Student Planner

The weekly pages in this planner have a section for writing your schedule and to-do list each day, along with writing your top three goals for the week.

Day Designer is a really popular planner brand, and they have collaborated with Blue Sky to create this affordable planner specifically for students.

Here’s some details to know about this planner:

  • Dimensions: 8.5″ x 11″ (Large Size)
  • 12-month agenda
  • Monthly and weekly pages
  • Dedicated goal-setting and planning pages
  • Holiday calendar
  • Additional note pages

This is a really nice college student planner that isn’t too pricy.

While the regular Day Designer planners cost around $60, these Day Designer for Blue Sky academic planners cost about a third of that! It’s a good budget-friendly option, but you are still getting a high-quality planner.

This is another planner with different size options. You can go smaller than the 8.5″ x 11″ dimensions listed above if you want a more pocket-sized planner.

5. Student Happy Planner

If you love all things colorful and stickers, then the Student Happy Planner is for you. This is a customizable planner that is almost like a scrapbook.

Happy Planner sells extension packs so if you wanted to add more pages to your academic planner (such as budgeting pages) then you can do that.

Academic Planner for College

Happy Planner fans rant and rave about these planners, which include specific planners for life, budgeting, fitness, meal planning, etc. This particular planner is designed specifically with students in mind.

Here’s the low-down on this planner:

  • Dimensions: 7″ x 9 1/4″
  • 12-month agenda
  • Detailed pages for course details
  • Overview pages for each month with notes
  • Inspirational quotes throughout

This is a great choice if you really want to customize your planner.

Happy Planner sells all kinds of accessories like extension packs with extra pages you can add to your planner. For example, if you wanted to add budgeting pages to your academic planner, you could do that.

They also have a crazy amount of planner stickers you can add on.

6. Bloom Academic Planner

The final planner I recommend for college students is the Bloom Academic Planner. This is a simple and cute academic planner.

Best Planner for College

Here are the details on what’s included with this planner:

  • Dimensions: 6″ x 8.25″
  • 13-month agenda
  • 20+ additional life planning pages
  • Sticker sheet (93 stickers total)
  • Reinforced interior pockets

If you’re looking for an affordable planner that comes with a ton of extra pages, the Bloom Academic Planner is really the perfect option.

I love all the additional “life planning” pages that come with this planner, including pages for goal setting, creating a vision board, habit tracking, purposes and values, spending tracker, and more.

Plus all the free stickers are a great bonus! I love me some planner stickers.

College Student Planner Accessories

Some people like to go all out with accessories for their planner.

I kept it pretty simple. I wrote everything in pencil (so I could easily erase and change things) and I used a ton of stickers, but that’s about it.

However, some people like to use a color-coding system with colored pens and sticky notes, or they go all out with stickers and washi tape in their planner. Whatever helps you stay organized, go for it!

Here are some popular planner accessories:

  • Colored gel pens
  • Planner stickers
  • Mini Post-It notes
  • Post-It flags
  • Pen storage pouch

How to Get the Most Out of Your Planner

Here are some of my top tips to help you get the most out of your planner!

At the end of the first week of classes once you have your schedule finalized, take some time to sit down with the syllabi from all your classes. Go through and write down every date from the syllabus in your planner – dates for tests, quizzes, projects, extra credit, and the final exam.

In the note pages of your planner, write down the course information (course name and number, class days and times, professor name and contact info, TA name and contact info, time and location for office hours.)

Do this for every class you’re taking. I promise this makes a huge difference and you’ll never be surprised by a deadline you were unprepared for.

At the beginning of every semester, you should also take the time to write down important dates for personal things. If you’re in a sorority or any other type of club or extracurricular activity, get the dates for meetings and events.

Weekly/Daily

On Sunday night, I always take a look at the weekly page ahead in my planner and review what’s there already to get an idea of my schedule. I also go ahead and write down anything else I know I have for the week. This only takes a few minutes and helps me get prepared for the upcoming week.

On a daily basis, I will add things to my to-do list as they come.

My favorite thing to do is cross off something after I’ve accomplished it or after the event has passed. Nothing is more satisfying than the feeling of physically crossing something off in my planner!

10 Best Academic Planners That'll Help You Stay Organized Throughout the School Year

10 Best Academic Planners for High School and College Students 2023

With the demands of classes, extracurricular activities, and a social life, some may find that staying organized during the school year can be quite a challenge. That's why it's so important to find the best academic planners when shopping for back-to-school supplies (along with the best backpacks for school and pens for note-taking !).

Academic planners can assist you in remembering important dates, keeping track of your classes, and experiencing the satisfying feeling of physically crossing off tasks on your to-do list – it just doesn’t hit the same on a phone. And if you haven't used a planner before, let us introduce you to a whole new and super-organized world. We happen to think that planners are incredibly useful and can aid in developing organizational skills regardless of whether you're in high school, college, or pursuing a Ph.D.

Plus, there are a lot of daily academic planners to choose from. You can opt for dated planners, which come pre-printed with dates, or go for undated planners, which provide more flexibility as you can fill in the dates yourself. The binding of the planner is another consideration. Spiral binding (how cute is this floral-print Erin Condren planner ?!) allows for easy flipping of pages and provides a flat writing surface, while hard binding (we love the chic look of this popular Artfan Amazon pick ) offers durability and a more professional appearance.

Check out our top picks for the best academic planners 2023-24 for high school and college students for the upcoming semester below, complete with detailed explanations and pros and cons.

The 6 Best Planners for College Students

As a student, time is the most valuable and important resource you have at your disposal. Learning how to plan and manage your time effectively will help you gain the most from your academic life and create habits to help you in your future career.

For a college student, effectively planning out your days, weeks, and months can mean the difference between the success you dream of and falling short of your goals. Although our world is becoming increasingly digital, there are many benefits to using a more traditional planner.

Planners allow you to map out due dates, daily activities, important appointments, projects, tests, and more. Sure, typing this information into your phone notes or sending it as an email to yourself sounds good in theory, but how many times have you done this, only to forget it later?

Even individual sheets of paper don’t cut it for this. Your planner is a product designed specifically for organization and keeping track of your schedule, and offers you a space free from digital distractions and notifications. Let’s look at some of the qualities a great student planner should possess.

What to Look for in a College Student Planner

  • A Customizable Book: Your planner will be the space where you organize not just your school-related activities, but your life. It should, therefore, reflect your personality. Some may prefer a personalized cover, while others benefit from something more simple and plain. Find an option that gives you options, so you can buy what suits you best.
  • Portability: Plans can change at any moment, so having a planner that is portable enough to bring along with you everywhere you go is a must. That way, you can pull it out of your purse or bag any time and won’t forget to mark down important changes or dates as you find out about them.
  • Easy Organization: An effective and useful student planner will be well-organized, allowing you to retrieve information the moment you need to do so.

Considering the qualities above, we’ve compiled a list of the best available student planners on the market. Let’s take a look at them.

Erin Condren LifePlanner™ Stylized Organizer

Emily ley weekly simplified planner, plum paper me planner, ban.do 12-month compact view planner, passion planner (academic), kikki.k leather weekly diary.

There are two included color themes to choose from; colorful or neutral, and you can customize the design even further.

Pick between a black, gold, rose gold, or platinum coil, and a non-personalized or personalized cover design. Each of the four cover options is permanent, leather-like, and hard bound.

Recommended by Katelyn McAdam at College Raptor, who said “If everything in your life is organized by color, this is the planner for you,” this product is designed and crafted in the U.S., so you can expect superb quality.

Some benefit from busier, more active designs, while others find that too distracting and prefer something simple and to the point.

For those in the latter category, The Weekly Simplified Planner is an ideal choice.

Terra Brown at Earn Spend Live said, “The lined section is great for class times, work schedules, and campus events, and the to-do list has plenty of room for assignments, chores, and errands…”

plum paper me planner

Plum Paper offers you a few different choices in addition to their student planner options, including traditional and family planners. Pick between three different layouts; evening, afternoon, or morning, hourly, or blank lines.

Kayla at KaylaBlogs.com recommends this planner, saying “The way the student planner was laid out worked perfectly to keep track of my many classes and activities.”

bando floral planner

There isn’t space for daily journal entries, so keep that in mind.

This is a good choice for planning out your academic goals, or even future events unrelated to school, such as parties or weddings.

The planner is 8 by 10 inches, has a laminated, matte hard cover, an elastic closure band, sticker pages, and a pocket with double sides.

Rebecca Evans at Her Campus had this to say about the planner, “The Ban.do Agenda is definitely the cutest out of these picks! Each monthly section starts off with a cute drawing and a quote to get your month started out on a good note.”

passion planner academic planner

Since it’s made from thicker-than-average paper, you can use any type of pen on it without having to worry about bleeding. It’s about the same size as a standard piece of paper and comes with around 190 pages.

Inside, you will find ample space for your weekly and monthly goals and thoughts. The booklet snaps close with elastic. This planner is recommended by Melanie Yates over at BestProducts.com, who described it as “a planner that’s perfect for the goal-oriented student who excels in time management.”

best planner for college student

Inside, you will also find ribbons for marking pages, and an elastic band for closing the book. You will find pages suitable for tracking your websites, notes, wish list, books, movies, bars and restaurants, addresses, and personal expenses.

On the pack of the book, there’s a pocket for added storage. This choice is recommended by Virginia Van Zanten at Vogue.com.

How to Improve Your Time Management

A great planner is an effective first step for improving your time management skills, but there is more you can do for ensuring you’re using your time wisely.

  • Get Specific : It’s too easy to slack off on goals that are not clearly defined. Use your planner to track your objectives, and get as specific as you can. Instead of achieving something “later,” state the exact date it will occur and get it down in writing.
  • Make Lists : Making lists will help you make good use of your time, but there’s a right way to do it. Start with listing the three most important tasks for your day, then don’t let yourself relax until you achieve them. That means no Facebook or Twitter until you’re done.
  • Stay Healthy : Establishing healthy habits is great for reasons beyond looking better. When you’re well-rested, getting enough exercise, and eating right, you are more likely to do things right the first time around. This saves you tons of time to dedicate to more important tasks, such as excelling at projects and acing upcoming tests.

Student life can be a wild ride, right?

Homework, assignments, class schedules, upcoming exams – it’s like a never-ending rollercoaster. But guess what? We have solutions for you.

Here are the 10 best planner apps for students, tested and approved, to help you conquer the chaos and ride that rollercoaster like a pro.

Say goodbye to missed deadlines and hello to seamless planning and efficient time management. Let’s dive right in!

I. How to choose the best student planner app for your needs

Here are 4 key factors to consider:

1. Free Version. Money matters, especially for us students. Look for free planner apps with generous feature offerings.

2. User-Friendly Interface. A good student planner app should help you get stuff done, not get lost in itself. Look for apps with clear navigation menus and well-designed icons.

3. Feature Set. Think about what’s essential for your study style, and check if the app has what you need – calendars, to-do lists, collaboration, compatibility with other productivity apps! And hey, the ability to personalize it with categories and labels is a plus.

4. Cross-Platform Compatibility . Make sure your app plays well with the devices you’re frequently using.

We noticed most students are glued to their mobile devices these days, so most planner apps we recommend below are available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Always searching with these planners

Plan for success with academic planners template.

Studying is never easy. Students of the past would be very impressed by all the possibilities the Internet provides to everyone to learn something new. However, new possibilities also mean new challenges, which, thankfully, also means new tools and approaches to make the process easier.

Academic planners play crucial roles for those who aspire to structure and organization in order to be effective in the classroom and get the maximum benefit from their classes and courses. Even a single basic student academic planner can help manage an endless stream of new information and facts. It’s a lifeboat.

xTiles college student planners are here to help you manage your students' years successfully with high academic performance yet without neglecting your personal commitments. So, in the end, you remember these years as something truly special that had nothing to do with chaos, constant burnout, and attempts to make it on time.

The best academic planners

People use different approaches to taking notes during classes and planning their educational process. Alas, not all of them turn out to be workable in the long run. Staying organized is crucial if you want to make the most of your educational experience and the best college planner can be a precise tool to help you in this.

From keeping track of deadlines to setting reminders for important events, being a student is much more than memorizing new material the night before the test. Learning realistic planning is a skill that is best acquired during your early school years. The faster, the better. So, as you step into the world of higher education, you can successfully balance coursework, projects, internships, and social life. As a result, you'll complete your student years with the knowledge and skills much needed for adult life.

However, whether you possess the skill of planning or not, academic planners for college students become essential companions that will guide you through your assignments and lectures and ensure you have time for your personal life. Look out for the best academic planners for college that suit your style and needs on this page.

Online student planners

In this digital age, the student planner app has emerged as an indispensable tool to help you conquer classes, assignments, social activities, and personal commitments.

The best college planner apps stand out due to their user-friendly interface, intuitive features, and synchronization across devices. You can manage your schedule without disrupting your social media browsing. Also, they offer easy synchronization and sharing with your fellow students engaged in similar courses or projects. A college planner online becomes a true companion for your academic journey.

Custom academic planners

As you embark on your educational journey, remember that success begins with self-organization. Even though that might sound like something that confines your life, you, and only you, keep control over your life and schedule.

Custom academic planners have gained popularity for their personalized touch. These templates offer a unique possibility of tailoring your planner to reflect your goals, tasks, and preferences, providing you with a motivational boost. When using one, you’re free to choose the cover design, include special sections, highlight the most important data, add embedded content and links, etc. This way, xTiles academic planners can become a reflection of your academic journey.

Also, there is a plethora of ready-to-use designs that can easily become an integral part of your studying process. For example, cute academic planners are a hit among students, offering both functionality and aesthetics. Their vibrant designs and inspirational quotes add a touch of positivity to the daily routine.

Academic planners for teachers

Teachers, who are from the opposite side of the education process, need help too. They, too, can benefit immensely from specialized planners. Academic planners for teachers are thoughtfully designed to accommodate lesson plans, grading schedules, and classroom activities.

These academic planners help educators focus on delivering quality education while staying organized behind the scenes. Only imagine what a piece of cake studying could be if both, students and teachers, used specialized planners to ensure their maximum efficiency and how many mistakes and overlooked details we could avoid.

Academic planners of different formats

Even though you can find a planner that is easy to customize, it’s important to choose the one that suits your goals. Otherwise, its customization options might not be enough to make it truly workable for your case.

For example, academic weekly and monthly planners offer a broader overview of your commitments, while academic daily planners break down your day into manageable segments. Weekly student planner features are designed to provide you with a comprehensive view of your upcoming week. With just a glance, you can anticipate assignments, exams, and meetings and even carve out time for relaxation.

People who prefer a more detailed approach to planning may try a daily student planner. It allows students to plan their day hour by hour, allocate time for each task, and ensure that no precious moment is wasted.

Academic year planners offer the broadest approach. They come into play, serving as your trusty companions throughout your yearly academic endeavors.

Additionally, academic calendar planners keep track of important dates, holidays, and academic milestones, ensuring that you never miss a beat.

So, which format sounds just right for you? Remember that you can blend yearly planners with monthly or weekly to ensure your small steps lead exactly to your big goals.

The college experience is a whirlwind of deadlines, exams, and social commitments. And, hopefully, you’re able to somehow squeeze in enough sleep as well. To put it simply, it can be a challenge to juggle these demands.

It’s for this reason that the humble calendar app should become your BFF. Even if it’s not as exciting as TikTok or Subway Surfers, it’s an essential tool for both your academic and personal lives.

At the same time, with so many calendar apps out there, choosing the right one can feel like another test in itself. Because you already have a packed schedule, we have the 12 best college calendar apps for you to choose from.

1. Calendar

Wanna make your college experience less stressful? Calendar can help you do that.

What is it like trying to schedule a time with your microbiology class study group? Using Calendar’s Find a Time feature, you can schedule a meeting in seconds. You can then enter multiple people’s calendars, see when they’re available or busy, and then create an event based on those times via a smart scheduling link.

You can also add location options, such as a physical address, phone number, or Zoom link. Moreover, if this event is recurring, Calendar will add it automatically thanks to the power of machine learning.

In a nutshell, Calendar prevents calendar conflicts and makes scheduling as painless as possible. Also, it eliminates those annoying back-and-forths when scheduling meetings with classmates, like study sessions. The app is available on Google Play as well as the App Store can connect with Google Calendar and Microsoft Calendar .

2. Google Calendar

Let’s face it, you probably already have the free Google Calendar installed. It’s for good reason, too.

Most users are familiar with its intuitive interface, seamless integration with other Google services (Docs, Gmail, etc.), and availability on multiple platforms (desktop, mobile, web). Creating calendars for study groups, assigning reminders, and color-coding events is a breeze with this app. Additionally, you can seamlessly turn to-dos into calendar events by integrating with Google Tasks .

The benefits are even greater if Gmail is your primary email address. Calendar events can be created automatically based on the emails you receive. For example, when you book things like airline tickets or concert tickets, your calendar will be updated.

3. Apple Calendar

In case you’re all in on Apple products, Apple Calendar is probably your calendar of choice. This isn’t a bad thing. In the end, it syncs your events across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and whatever shiny device Apple will come up with next.

As far as scheduling goes, Apple Calendar does a solid enough job. It reduces the time and effort required to enter events manually by allowing you to insert events directly from emails and text messages. Plus, like most Apple products, it’s clean, fast, and well-functioning.

There may not be as many options as other calendar apps, but the free Apple Calendar is well-suited for your basic scheduling tasks.

4. Microsoft To Do

Few planner apps are better for college students than this one. Why? It is simple to use and allows assignments to be sorted into lists. For instance, you can create sections called “Home”, “Lab”, and “Work.”. For each section, you can create sub-tasks as well. As an example, you can include tasks such as “Find sources,” “Upload pictures,” etc. in a biology project.

Among the most valuable features of this application is saving unchecked actions from yesterday. Using this option, you can easily see which tasks need to be moved to other days or to “My Day.”

By prioritizing tasks , setting due dates, and getting reminders, Microsoft To-Do can help students manage their time and tasks. Also, Teams can be used for free by students and teachers from K-12 to collegiate level with a valid school email address.

5. My Study Life

Most calendar apps target busy professionals, but My Study Life caters specifically to students. Because of this, you won’t find some features in other calendar apps.

My Study Life has innovative scheduling features to help you stay on top of your classes and extracurricular activities. With My Study Life, you can also keep track of your classes no matter how they change during the week. There is even a section dedicated to scheduling your exams.

In addition to synchronizing your schedule across devices, My Study Life works offline as well. You’ll always have access to your classes and assignments regardless of location or internet connection. The My Study Life app is available on Android, iOS, and the Web.

6. iStudiez Pro

IStudiez Pro is an award-winning, highly-rated planner app made just for students. And it’s easy to see why.

You just need to enter your class schedule — along with the professor’s name, contact information, and office hours. To make it visually interesting and easier to scan, you can color code your classes.

With the “Week view,” you can plan your time and prepare for classes that are coming up. You can view tasks and scheduled items for today in the “Day view.” It is possible to add assignments, their due dates, and specific tasks associated with each class.

iStudiez Pro’s Full Version even lets you keep track of your GPA on a regular basis. As you get graded assignments back, enter them. The GPA tracker on iStudiez does the math for you. By keeping this information between semesters, you can keep an eye on the big picture.

You can download the app for free on Android, iOS, and the web. It costs $2.99 on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store for the Pro version.

7. Fantastical

Trying to find a better calendar app for your Mac or iOS device? If so, Fantastical might be right for you.

Among Fantastical’s main strengths is its deep integration with Apple. That means no matter what device you use, Fantastical keeps your calendar up-to-date. It works on Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches.

In addition, you can easily create events while on the go with the app’s powerful natural language processing. Using geofenced reminders , you can get reminders only when you are at a specific location, for example.

Last but not least, Fantastical also integrates with iCloud, Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar, and many other calendar apps. The app is fully localized for multilingual users or workplaces for English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese.

For individuals, Fantastical costs $4.75 per month.

8. myHomework

Nothing is confusing about this app, it’s very easy to use. As such, you’ll have a friendly assistant who keeps track of your academic life without any tech hassles. In contrast to many student planner apps, myHomework can be accessed regardless of Wi-Fi availability. In addition, it works on multiple devices, including computers, tablets, and phones.

Regardless of whether you are online or offline, you always have your schedule at hand – events, homework, exams, you name it.

Thanks to those handy reminders, you’ll never forget.

In short, myHomework is one of the best planner apps for tracking assignments and organizing subjects if you want a friendly, no-fuss solution.

9. Power Planner

For students, Power Planner is an excellent time management app. You can view assignments, enter your class schedule, track your GPA, and view your assignments. A constant stream of new features and bug fixes is being added to this application by its developers.

Specifically, thanks to its advanced GPA calculator, this planner app is ideal for students. Also included is a “What if?” option that calculates the points you need to get a particular grade for tasks. In addition, the application notifies users of upcoming events.

For $1.99, you can upgrade to the paid version with more features. You can, for instance, keep track of your GPA from semester to semester.

Power Planner is available for iOS, Android, and Windows.

10. Todoist

Companies like Amazon and Disney use Todoist as a project planner and to-do list. College students will also find it useful, however.

The reason? The Todoist app uses natural language processing to create tasks. As an example, Todoist can convert your words into an actionable task titled “Biology assignment,” which is due at 9 PM on Thursday.

Moreover, you can create a reminder, add labels, and add notes. As well as creating projects, sharing tasks, and delegating tasks, Todoist allows you to collaborate with others. A few other key features include:

  • Due dates & reminders
  • Labels and filters
  • Recurring tasks
  • Available on multiple devices

There is a version of the app and Pro for $4/month.

The Classify-School Planner is also extremely easy to use. Its intuitive design allows activities to be easily created, edited, and deleted in seconds.

Among its most unique features, however, is its built-in Pomodoro Timer . In addition, the timetables help you know exactly where you need to be at any given moment. And you can also share your homework and events with your classmates.

Classify is available on the App Store and Google Play.

You can use Shovel – Study Planner for free to create a time-blocking study planner to help you throughout your college years. Combining time management and task management lets you know what needs to be done next.

College Athletes’ Status as Employees Puts Student Visas at Risk

By Andrew Kreighbaum

Andrew Kreighbaum

Growing momentum toward classification of college athletes as employees of their schools is raising major questions about international students’ continued visa eligibility.

A National Labor Relations Board regional director earlier this month determined for the first time that college athletes can be deemed employees under the National Labor Relations Act. That decision so far is limited to Dartmouth College’s men’s basketball team, but immigration attorneys say the case signals a broader shift that calls for action from both Congress and the immigration agencies.

“It’s a sign of what’s to come,” said Ksenia Maiorova , a partner at Green and Spiegel LLC. “Most legal professionals in this space believe the classification of NCAA student athletes as employees is inevitable.”

Classifying student athletes as employees is at odds with the work limitations of the F-1 student visa—the category most heavily used by the roughly 20,000 international athletes enrolled at US colleges and universities, attorneys say.

The F-1 visa only allows for limited work opportunities, including 20 hours of work on campus or 40 hours when classes aren’t in session. That limit matches the restrictions on weekly athletic activities during a playing season under the NCAA bylaws .

However, the classification of students as employees of the institution they attend gives rise to more fundamental considerations about continued eligibility for the F-1 visa than the number of hours spent working, said Robert Seiger , a partner at Fox Rothschild LLP.

“For lack of a better word, it upends a class of visa holders,” he said. “If you’re taking students and reclassifying them as employees, then in the simplest terms, those athletes are no longer considered to be students and therefore are ineligible for the F-1.”

Dartmouth is appealing the NLRB Region 1 director’s ruling to the board.

The director “correctly decided that members of the Dartmouth Men’s Basketball team have the right to form a union and recognized that international students can be members of labor unions without compromising their immigration status,” SEIU Local 560, the union seeking to represent the players, said in a statement to Bloomberg Law.

“SEIU Local 560 looks forward to negotiating a fair contract for all Dartmouth Men’s Basketball players, regardless of national origin, and calls on Dartmouth to respect the players’ rights,” the union said.

The college declined to comment beyond a statement it issued after the ruling citing a “long and proud history of productive relationships with unions on campus.”

There likely won’t be immediate effects for international Dartmouth players on student visas while the case is appealed. But they face an uncertain future if the ruling sticks, attorneys say.

Foreign college athletes’ unique status was highlighted by the proliferation of name, image, and likeness policies in recent years, including the NCAA’s adoption of broad rules on compensation deals after a loss at the US Supreme Court .

While the new NIL landscape meant significant deals for many star athletes, foreign players for the most part were prevented from cashing in because of their visas’ work restrictions.

To get around those restrictions, some have been able to obtain P-1 visas, a nonimmigrant visa used by professional athletes or others competing at internationally recognized levels of performance. In even rarer circumstances , athletes have sought O-1 visas for individuals with extraordinary ability so they can sign endorsement deals under the NIL framework.

And those visa workarounds likely aren’t feasible on the scale necessary to address issues posed by the reclassification of large numbers of international athletes as employees, said Amy Maldonado , an immigration lawyer who has advised athletes on NIL issues.

“Students don’t have to engage in NIL,” she said. “If every F-1 student athlete is an employee as soon as they get to the United States, that’s a problem.”

Maiorova said classification as employees could have long-term effects for international athletes’ efforts to obtain visas in other categories as well if government officials find they violated their student visa status.

“A consular officer has the ability to deny a visa for any reason they see fit,” she said. “This has potential lasting consequences.”

Wider Landscape

Those implications underline the need for action by Congress and the Department of Homeland Security, Maiorova said.

Legislation ( S. 2554, H.R. 4948 ) introduced by Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Rep. Lori Trahan (D-Mass.), would allow international athletes to sign the same NIL deals as their US teammates without having their F-1 visa status affected—even in the case that college athletes are classified as employees of their schools or athletic associations.

Both Maldonado and Maiorova advised on the drafting of that measure, which hasn’t advanced in either chamber.

US Citizenship and Immigration Services referred questions to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the DHS subagency that manages the student and exchange visitor program.

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program at ICE is monitoring legislation and court rulings on college athletes, said Page Hughes, a spokesperson for the agency. ICE and partner agencies like USCIS remain “actively engaged in discussions on this topic. We would not comment on any potential changes to SEVP,” she said.

Fanta Aw , executive director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, said educators hope to see the agency weigh in soon on employment questions involving student visas.

“We’ve seen this before when graduate students have unionized on many campuses and our international students have been part of those programs,” she said. “They have been able to enjoy the same rights as other students who are unionizing.”

The employment status of college athletes will be tested further by two other pending cases: one before an NLRB administrative law judge concerning unionization efforts at the University of Southern California and another in the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit involving compensation under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The Third Circuit case could apply even more broadly than the one before the board, said David Weber , a law professor at Creighton University. That’s because NLRB rulings are binding on the teams or bargaining groups that brought an action and the agency does not have authority over public employers, he said. The FLSA case would affect all institutions covered by the Third Circuit and create an appeals court split with previous rulings in the Seventh Circuit and Ninth Circuit .

“It’s probably premature to say” what precedent the Dartmouth case will set, Weber said.

“But we’ve already seen a pretty strong stance by the general counsel at NLRB stating that they believe college athletes fall within the definition of employees under the NLRA,” he said. “If we have multiple decisions along those lines, that starts to become pretty significant.”

What we know and what we don't about death of Oklahoma teen Nex Benedict

Owasso student Nex Benedict

A police investigation is underway after a 16-year-old Owasso High School student died earlier this month after sustaining injuries in an altercation on school grounds. Medical examiners are still completing their investigation into what killed Nex Benedict, but police said Wednesday that an autopsy determined Nex did not die as a result of trauma.

The news of the high school sophomore's death has generated widespread attention, in part because of the student's gender-expansive identity and claims of bullying that led up to the altercation.

More: Family identifies Nex Benedict as nonbinary Oklahoma teen who died after bathroom beating

Authorities have disclosed some information in the last week in an attempt to dispel rumors circulating online, but many questions remain unanswered, though, including what killed the 16-year-old.

What we know, and what we don't about, the death of Nex Benedict

What has the Owasso Police Department said?

"Owasso police officers suspect foul play involved and need to initiate an in-depth investigation into the death," Penny Hamrick, an Owasso Police detective, wrote in a search warrant filed Wednesday in Tulsa County courts.

According to the Owasso Police Department , officers were called to Bailey Medical Center at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 by the parent of a 16-year-old female student from Owasso High School.

Hamrick wrote that Nex's parent Sue Benedict wanted to report the assault and asked police to talk with school administrators about what had happened. She did not ask officers to pursue charges against the other students at that time, Hamrick wrote.

The Owasso Police said no report of the fight was made to their department before the notification at the hospital, and a school resource officer took a report at the hospital.

Nex was later discharged from the hospital. But shortly before 3 p.m. the next day, Benedict called 911 to report Nex was experiencing medical issues, including shallow breathing. She told the 911 operator about the altercation at school and said Nex had hit her head on the bathroom floor, Hamrick wrote.

Emergency medical crews performed CPR on Nex and drove them to a Tulsa hospital, where they were pronounced dead around 3:30 p.m.

Lt. Nick Boatman, a spokesman for Owasso Police, said police are “conducting a very active and thorough investigation” while they wait for autopsy and toxicology results. Boatman said he cannot comment on any possible charges related to the case until officers receive more information from medical examiners.

“We do not want to make any rash conclusions about any part of the investigation or the cause of death,” he said in an email. “Unfortunately, it’s just going to take time.”

Owasso police said they plan to spend the next several days interviewing students and teachers, then turn over their findings to the Tulsa County district attorney’s office.

Officers also may bring in other agencies, such as the FBI, if they determine a major crime occurred, said Lt. Nick Boatman, a spokesman for Owasso Police.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office based in Tulsa said she could not confirm nor deny whether the office was involved in the case.

Boatman said investigators are still waiting for initial autopsy results before deciding whether to recommend charges be filed in the case. The state medical examiner’s office said its full investigation into the student’s death could take four to six months.

What has the Owasso Public School District said?

District officials had been tight-lipped about what happened. But in a statement issued Tuesday , spokesman Jordan Korphage pushed back against “statements that call into question the district’s commitment to student safety and security.”

Korphage said a fight happened in a school bathroom on the afternoon of Feb. 7. He said the students were in the bathroom for less than two minutes before other students and a school employee broke up the fight.

He said a nurse checked on all students and recommended one teen seek further medical attention “out of the abundance of caution.” Korphage disputed claims that the teen who later died was unable to walk immediately after the fight.

“All students involved in the altercation walked under their own power to the assistant principal’s office and nurse’s office,” he said.

He declined to say how many students were involved. He also said he could not say whether any students were disciplined afterward, citing privacy laws.

What are people saying about Nex Benedict on TikTok, social media

Word of the student's death spread across social media platforms like TikTok the weekend after Nex's funeral was held.

Many platforms have cited 2 News in Tulsa, which reported that the teen and a classmate were beaten in a school bathroom by three older students. The television station spoke with a woman who said her daughter was the other student injured in the fight.

The woman, who was not named in the news report, claimed school officials did not seek emergency medical care for the student who later died.

Many on social media cite right-wing rhetoric shared by Oklahoma politicians as a cause for vitriol toward nonbinary individuals.

DepEd: Gradual return to old school calendar starting SY 2024-2025

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday announced the gradual return of the old school break starting next school year (SY).

DepEd made the pronouncement through Department Order No. 003 S. of 2024, which declared May 31, 2024 as the new adjusted end date of the current SY 2023 to 2024.

It also declared the start of SY 2024 to 2025 to be on Monday, July 29, and the end on Friday, May 16, 2025.

“Magiging gradual ‘yung shift ng ating school calendar — back to the usual April [to] May break. So ngayon, ang ginawa po natin ay mage-end tayo ng May 31, pero magstart pa rin tayo around July 29,” DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa told reporters in a chance interview.

(The shift in our school calendar will be gradual — back to the usual April to May break. So what we’ve done now is we will end on May 31, but we will still start around July 29.)

“And then slowly, imomove natin siya back until bumalik tayo doon sa normal na April May break,” he added.

(And then slowly, we will move it back until we return to the normal April to May break.)

READ: DepEd urged: Let SY 2024-2025 return to old school calendar

Originally, the end of SY 2023 to 2024 was supposed to be June 14.

With the adjusted end of the school year, the school break this year will be from June 1 to July 26, 2024.

According to Poa, the decision to revert to the old academic calendar was based on “what majority of Filipinos want,” citing surveys and the results of their own field consultations.

“Generally everyone wants to go back to April May [break],” said Poa.

With the gradual revert to the old school calendar, Poa said DepEd expects an April 2 end of class in SY 2026 to 2027, with SY 2027 to 2028 expected to end around March.

Based on DepEd’s projected timeline, the respective start and end of SYs until 2028 are as follows:

  • For SY 2026-2027: Start of SY – June 22, 2026; End of SY (EOSY) – April 2, 2027
  • For SY 2027-2028: Start of SY – June 07, 2027; EOSY – March 17, 2028
  • Proposed opening for SY 2028-2029: June 5, 2028

When asked if the adjustment drastically changed the number of school days for SY 2023 to 2024, Poa responded that it did not, since only around seven to eight days were deducted in the current SY.

“Hindi ganoong karami ang nabasawasan sa school days natin; if I’m not mistaken, around seven to eight days lang ang nabawas for this SY,” said Poa.

(Not too many school days were reduced; if I’m not mistaken, only around seven to eight days were deducted for this school year.)

“Hindi kasi talaga natin pwedeng bawasan kaagad ‘yon, dahil nga hindi naman matutunan ng bata lahat ng competencies na kailangan nila. That’s why magiging gradual shift,” he added.

(We really can’t immediately reduce those days because children won’t be able to learn all the competencies they need. That’s why the shift will be gradual.)

He also assured the public that the adjustment was based on extensive consultations with several stakeholders, which also included ensuring that student and teacher competencies would not be affected.

Meanwhile, for private schools, Poa said they can still choose to either follow DepEd’s guidelines or set their own school calendars, so long as it abides by the law.

“Nakasulat sa batas that schools cannot open before the first Monday of June or later than the last day of August,” said Poa.

(There’s a provision in the law that schools cannot open before the first Monday of June or later than the last day of August.)

Exams, other schedules

In the new school calendar, the third Quarter Examinations during SY 2023 to 2024 will be on March 25 to 26, while the Fourth Quarter Exam begins on May 16 until 17, 2024.

DepEd also encouraged schools to conduct their respective EOSY Rites from May 29 to 31, 2024.

Meanwhile, DepEd national activities will be conducted on the following dates:
