50 Easy Crafts for Kids to Boost Their Creativity
Fun, quick and creative art projects to keep little ones entertained at home or at school.
We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.
Every age group can benefit from an amazing day of crafting at home or at school — working with their hands can help preschoolers and toddlers develop fine motor skills and increase their confidence with sensory activities like making hand drums and filling bottles with colorful glitter. They can paint to their heart's content, crayon and draw smiling faces on their craft stick octopuses, animal bookmarks and pom-pom monsters (one of the Halloween-inspired crafts on the list). Many of these ideas are straightforward enough for little ones to try with supervision — however, some projects may require more hands-on assistance. But the good news is you can find most of the supplies (buttons, glue, tissue paper, coffee filters and paper plates, for instance) right in your craft box, ready to be put to use.
On our list, you'll find the best craft project options for kids from popular DIY blogs as well as a few of our favorite holiday-specific crafts, including options for Earth Day and Father's Day . And since it's never too early to plan, we've also included some crafts for the holidays, since Thanksgiving and Christmas are always great times for kids to get crafty. Say goodbye to boredom!
Embellished Bow
Here's a quick way to take a basic straw basket to the next level! Kids can embellish bows with iron-on patches and stenciled monograms. Help them create their own bows using a 3" wired ribbon or purchase a large one to design. Then, use fabric glue to attach the decorative patches.
Monster Windsocks
This is a great group project for the kids. Let the kids cut, fold and draw on cardstock to create wide-eyed monster windsocks for the backyard.

Finish it off by wrapping floral tape around the base of the liners and bringing it all the way down the stem.
Paper Bag Kite
Spring is the perfect time to fly a kite. Luckily, kids can make their own with paper lunch bags. Let them embellish the bags with stickers, washi tape, paint and any other accessories. Then, work on attaching the yarn and streamers so the kite will be ready to fly.

Carrot Treat Cones
Easter may have passed, but that doesn't mean this carrot treat cone craft should too! To make, you'll need to print out our carrot template . Then gather the essentials: coffee filters, orange paper, double stick tape, green craft paint, twine, a clothespin, a wire hanger, paper towel and scissors.
- Mix a few drops of green craft paint with water until it reaches the consistency of milk. Soak coffee filters in the paint mixture until fully saturated (you can do this simultaneously).
- Squeeze out excess paint and lay the filters flat to dry on paper towels or hang them from a hanger with a clip or clothespin. Download our template and trace it onto orange paper.
- Cut out and roll the template into a cone shape, adhering the sides with double stick tape. Cut out the center of the painted coffee filters.
- Attach the remaining paper to the inside edge of the cone with double-stick tape. Fill the “carrot” cone with small treats and tie twine around the top to close.

18 Easy Art Activities for Kids to Do at Home
Encourage creativity and artistic expression with these fun, easy art activities for kids, including watercolor paintings, craft stick projects, simple stamped art, and more.
Wera Rodsawang/Getty Images
Art has many benefits for children: It encourages self-expression, improves motor skills, develops patience and problem-solving abilities, and increases concentration. It also gives kids a boost of self-esteem when they complete something independently. And maybe most important to kids? It's fun!
Keep those little hands busy and encourage their creativity with these art projects and activities for kids. And when it comes to supplies, you probably already have most of them at home.
For this easy art activity for kids, you'll need watercolor paper, watercolor paints, painter's tape, a paintbrush, crayons, and stickers.
After taping the watercolor paper to a flat surface (like a newspaper-covered table) encourage your child to decorate it with crayons and/or stickers. Then they can paint the entire paper with watercolors. Wait until it's dry, then gently remove the tape and stickers. These items will leave behind bright white designs on the paper! The crayons will also repel the watercolor, resulting in unpainted "negative space."
Natural Collage
Start this art activity by printing out a full-body photo of your child (for reference, ours is 8.5 inches by 11 inches). Then take a walk outside to gather "natural art supplies" from the landscape—think leaves, twigs, flowers, and bark. Back at home, glue the items to the photo to create a memorable collage to hang in your home!
Coffee Filter Art
Tennessee art teacher Rachel Motta, who works with the Metropolitan Nashville Public School district, shares how to turn coffee filters into paper glass with this art project for kids. It was inspired by exhibitions of Dale Chihuly's contemporary, colorful bowl-shaped glass sculptures called Macchia.
Grab a white paper coffee filter; its translucency mimics the look of glass. Give the filter uneven edges with scissors, then use non-permanent markers to make lines and spots on it. Lay the coffee filter on a turned-over yogurt container or plastic cup, apply spray starch, and watch the colors bleed together. When the coffee filter becomes saturated, stop and let it dry.
Handmade Tiles
For this art and craft activity for kids, you'll simply need the power of the sun and a few basic materials: ½ cup water, 1 ½ cup flour, ¾ cup salt, a mixing spoon, a mixing bowl, a sheet tray, a rolling pin, acrylic paint, and paintbrushes. You can decorate the tile with cookie cutters, rubber stamps, and small objects.
To start, mix the water, flour, and salt in a bowl, and knead it for about 2 minutes. Section off a ball of the dough onto a lightly dusted countertop, and roll it into a square shape—this will be your tile.
Create impressions in the soft dough with your cookie cutter, rubber stamp, or object (for example, a silk flower). Add details with a pencil. Once you're satisfied, place the tile on the sheet tray in direct sunlight. Leave it for several hours, checking periodically to notice changes in the dough, before flipping it to dry the bottom.
Color the dried tile with acrylic paint. (Note: You can make several tiles with the dough recipe, so feel free to get creative with different designs!)
Kaleidoscope Collage
Grab some poster board or a large canvas, and get ready to make this kaleidoscope of colors! First, create a mixture of ½ cup craft glue and ¼ cup water. After your child draws a large shape (like a circle or square) on the poster, brush it with some of the glue mixture. Apply tissue paper squares to the wet board, brush some more glue over them, and repeat this process until you've covered the shape.
To prevent messy dripping, we recommend completing this project outside on a flat surface (just make sure it's not too windy!).
3D Portrait
3D elements elevate this easy art activity for kids! Draw a simple image on a piece of card stock, cardboard, or one side of a cereal box. Ball up pieces of crepe paper, then attach them to the canvas with tacky glue.
Craft Stick Barn
This art project resembles an iconic Midwestern barn. To recreate it, paint six craft sticks white, nine craft sticks red, and four mini craft sticks white. As they dry, have your child draw grass and sky on a piece of card stock.
Arrange the craft sticks as shown to make the barn:
- Glue 11 craft sticks vertically for the bottom of the barn. The pattern is two red, one white, five red, one white, and two red.
- Glue two white sticks across the top and bottom horizontally to make the framing.
- Arrange the mini craft sticks to make the roof of the barn. Color the roof in with red crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Alternatively, you can fill it with red card stock.
- Make a window with black paper cut into a rectangle. If you want to add hay, cut strips from a brown paper bag.
Pastel Scribbles
Looking for an art project for toddlers? This abstract painting might do the trick! Gather one sheet of white paper, watercolor paints, oil pastels, tape, water, and paintbrushes.
After taping down the paper on a surface, have your child draw all over it with oil pastels. Then they can cover the paper with watered-down watercolor paint. The pastels will pop right through the paint!
Salt Watercolor
Who knew this beautiful paper could be so easy to make? Just cover paper with watercolor paint, then sprinkle on coarse salt right away. After the paper dries, remove any excess salt, and admire your beautiful, ethereal pattern! You can use the paper to wrap vases, gifts, organizational containers, and more.
Simple Silhouette
Your child can easily recreate their own silhouette with a few simple supplies! Photograph their head from the side, enlarge the photo to your desired size, and print it in black and white. Place the picture on black paper and cut around the head and shoulder; make sure the scissors cut through the black paper and the photo paper. Glue the silhouette to fabric or patterned card stock—then place it in a frame for display.
Bell Pepper Prints
This art and craft activity for kids relies on an unusual tool: a bell pepper! Cut off the bottom of the pepper. Dip the cut portion into acrylic paint (try pouring the paint on a paper plate) and press it onto your surface of choice.
We used a pillow, but you can also decorate T-shirts, tote bags, placemats, or anything else your heart desires. The final result is a cute flower pattern you'd be happy to display in your home! Don't forget to let the project dry overnight.
Mosaic Artwork
These mosaic-style pictures will look amazing on your kid's bedroom wall . On a piece of card stock, sketch a rough outline of a simple landscape (we drew a sailboat in the sea). Your child can tear colors from magazine pages or pieces of paper, then glue them onto the card stock to complete the artwork. Consider laminating the final product so the mosaic pieces won't come loose.
Stamped Napkins
Do you need new napkins? Let your children make them with this fun art activity! Gather items to use as stamps (we chose leaves, but you can also make stamps by cutting shapes from potatoes or sponges). Cover the makeshift stamps with fabric paint, then press them onto your fabric. Remove the stamp and let the fabric dry. Launder according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Collage Drawing
This creative art project combines drawing with collage-making. Cut out images from a magazine; they can be anything your child likes (we cut grass and half of a pear). Glue the items to sheets of paper, and finish the artwork with colored pencils or markers. This art activity really exercises your child's imagination!
Stone Succulents
You don't need to worry about watering these succulents! Gather rocks outside, then decorate them with acrylic paint to resemble cactuses. For larger cactuses, attach a few rocks together with glue. Fill a small pot with sand (tape over any holes inside the pot) and arrange your DIY faux succulents on top.
"I Love You" Card
You can use this DIY card for many different occasions, like birthdays, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day , or even just because! Have your child trace their hand on card stock, cut it out, fold the two middle fingers, and secure with glue. This gesture says "I love you" in sign language. Glue the hand to another piece of paper folded into a card shape, and decorate with stickers, glitter, markers, or whatever else you want.
Painted Salad Servers
This fun art activity for kids doubles as an excellent homemade gift ! Buy some wood or bamboo salad servers, lightly sand the handles, and rinse them in water. Section off the bottom portion of the servers with masking tape. Decorate with acrylic paint in any pattern; in our version, a child dipped a finger into paint and made dots on the handles. Let the paint dry, remove the tape, and cover the handles with a nontoxic sealant (like shellac).
Pressed Flowers
Did you know that you can easily press flowers at home? All you need is a thick book, a heavy object, scissors, and paper. The next time you go on a walk with your child, have them collect flowers. Ones with a relatively flat surface, like pansies and violets, work best for this art activity.
At home, open your heavy book to a middle page, and cover the pages with white paper to protect them. Flatten the flower by trimming off the stem, placing it in the book, and carefully closing it. Top the book with your heavy objects (such as bricks). One week later, remove the delicate flowers and use them however you want!

30 art activities for kids of all ages to enjoy
Some parents hear the word "art" and envision marker on the couch, handprints on the walls and tons of general chaos. But it doesn't have to be chaotic – and creating art with your kids can propel essential opportunities for growth as they engage their senses, use their imagination and practice problem-solving skills.
“Art projects will always involve some mess and that’s why some parents will try to avoid them,” Stephanie Pflucker says. “However, including art activities in our kids’ daily lives is very important.” Pflucker and Katrina Suarez developed Crafty Moms , an art activities resource for parents on social media.
"Making art is a great way for children to develop fine motor skills since they will be strengthening their hand muscles by grabbing paint brushes, crayons, markers or even scissors," Pflucker tells TODAY Parents .
“Kids can also explore and learn about colors or numbers, depending on the activity you are planning to do,” adds Suarez. She says that art encourages visual analysis, improves hand-eye coordination and also helps children establish concentration.
Together with our favorite "crafty moms," we made a list of simple, no-stress art activities for each age.

"This is the age of exploration," Pflucker said. "Kids around this age still put everything in their mouths, so we encourage parents to try making taste-safe activities."
8 activities for this age include:
- Painting on ice molds
- Taste-safe finger paint using yogurt and food coloring
- Homemade chalk using cornstarch, water and food coloring
- Water and food coloring painting popsicles
- Mess-free painting in plastic bags (if parents prefer to avoid the mess)
- Sticker collages
- Paper plate masks
- Washable handprint art in the bathtub
Art activities for kids ages 3-5
Suarez told TODAY Parents this is her favorite age for art projects.
"Kids will be able to properly grasp pencils, crayons, chalk and paintbrushes," she said. "They won't put things in their mouths anymore, so it's a great time to explore different materials and art supplies."
Art projects for this age range can be more complex, and parents can include learning in the process.
"They will also improve your kid's fine motor skills, which are essential for a child's school readiness," Suarez said.
7 activities for this age include:
- Painting butterflies using kitchen sponges
- Handprint and footprint creations
- Painting fallen leaves
- DIY stamps re-using a roller
- Washi tape collage
- Popsicle stick structures
- Paper bag animals
Art activities for kids ages 5-8
Pflucker explained that ages 5-8 is a great time to start teaching kids how to be mindful of the environment.
"We encourage parents to teach their kid how to make art projects up-cycling materials that they would normally throw away," she said. "Kids can use plastic containers from fruits or veggies, bubble wrap from the mail, cardboard boxes or they could even use cereal boxes instead of paper."
- DIY reusable canvas for freestyle painting
- Painting using bubble wrap envelopes as a large stamp
- Freestyle painting over a reusable plastic container board
- Homemade puffy paint
- Decorate a toilet paper roll and add a ball of aluminum foil to make a microphone
- Decorate with paper chains
- Dot painting with cotton swabs
Art activities for kids ages 8+
Suarez said that art is a great way for children to reflect and manage their emotions, and it can also improve confidence and self-esteem in a multitude of ways.
"Unfortunately, most kids around this age will start losing interest in doing conventional art," she said, adding that this age is a good time to start being more creative. "Parents can include science into their art projects to make them more interesting, including different materials and techniques."
- DIY homemade stickers
- DIY earrings
- Chalk painting
- Styrofoam printing
- Tie-dye Ziplocs
- Friendship bracelets
- Resist art: Use crayons with watercolor on top, for example.
- Create a fairy garden with rocks, flowers and natural elements
Pflucker recommends choosing the right activities for a child’s age, having everything ready before starting (especially clean-up materials), setting clear limits and guides before they start, choosing the right environment (inside or outside), using food or cookie trays to contain the mess and supervising every activity closely.

Hi Cheryl, which book? All the ebooks are in the sidebar of my site as well as the bottom of the post. Hope that helps. Thank you so much.
Fabulous, Meri and best of all: I know that each one of these is special and will be an amazing activity! A fabulous post, filled with your creative spirit!
Thank you so much Gina! I wish we could do any one of these together with ALL the kids!
just wondering, with all the art that is made by your kids, do you keep it all, store it, keep some, toss some……?
Hi! I do ditch some of it. But most of it I keep in portfolios like this http://www.mericherry.com/2015/01/01/recycled-art-portfolios-art-storage-kids/ They are big and easy to make and every year or whenever needed we make another and I put their age/year. It’s like a filing system. They fit nicely in magazine racks too and occasionally my girls go through them. I go through them too sometimes and ooh and ahh and also think, why did I save this one? : )
I love, love, love your ideas. I signed up for your emails also. I do have one suggestion….after I signed up for your email. It kept popping up . It did it so often that when I was trying to read your posts it got annoying. But other than that I love your site.
Thank you so much for telling me!!! I have been having some issues with that pop up. I am trying to fix it asap. I really appreciate you letting me know and your kind words. Thank you!
I was wondering if you have different activities like this for elderly. I work with elderly with dementia and altimerze. I’m going to start for with these activities. This would be fun. Thanks for these wonderful ideas.
I love knowing you are trying these out with adults. How wonderful. Paint mixing and then painting on recycled cardboard I think would be really fun and open ended. Here’s a link. http://www.mericherry.com/2014/10/06/recycled-shape-art-kids-easy-project/ I don’t have anything specific. I would recommend all the really open ended stuff. Oooh, pastels too. http://www.mericherry.com/2015/02/19/working-pastels-easy-process-art-kids/ Hope these are helpful!
Thank you for sharing! I can’t wait to try some of your projects with our Creative Tots!!
Awesome! My pleasure!
Wow, Meri…you make me wish I wasn’t afraid of messes 😉 Thanks for putting this list together! Maybe one day…when I’m feeling brave…
From rock painting to spin art to melted crayons, your 5 year old will love the 6899 se colorful and creative craft ideas!
do you guys ever have pottery activities for 3-5 year olds
yes, I’ll have to post a few. thanks for the reminder! we have a great fall one coming up
Hi! Meri, I’m a preschool teacher of 3 year olds. And process art is newish in my neck of the woods. I’m in love with it and completely understand the hole concept of it’s the process not the end results. Love it! I do have a question about it though. Looking and reading through a few of your posts, 1 in particular is the “Robot Puppet”, how do you present it? Wording I suppose. For instance did you tell them they were going to make a robot puppet? And have all the parts and supplies there on the table for them? Or did you have everything prepared and on the table and throw out suggestions as to what they might make? I know I’m babbling but I so desperately want to understand and get it right! In a class that I’m taking I asked the question if I had all the parts and supplies laid out on the table for example a school bus. I told the kiddos we were going to make a school bus today, so they knew , you can use everything on the table….and let them put it together as they saw fit, was that a form of process art or teacher lead art? I was told no it is not process art. Then i was told if I had maybe read a book about a school bus and placed the book in the art center and as the kiddos were getting their supplies that were laid out and simply suggested “gee all those colors and parts kinda look like a school bus. Remember our story about a school bus” and then let them create, maybe a school bus, their way that could be process art. I’m so confused. Is the main thing not to tell them this is what we’re making? It seems okay to lay everything out. Help! I know I’m a challenge and I thank you upfront. Blessings!
Hi Betsy, I think this is a really great question and understand where you’re coming from. First, I’ll say, you’re doing great. Second, different people may have different opinions on this. Regarding the robots, I said who likes Robots? Who thinks they can make a really cool robot? I bet you are going to have ideas I never even dreamed of. And things along those lines, knowing my students would be into making robots. For me what makes it process art is that everyone is able to make their own choices, explore the materials, making decisions about how they want their robot to look. No two robots looked the same and the kids truly enjoyed the process and their own creativity. To me, that’s process art. Hope that helps! all the best, Meri
Thank you so much Meri! Whew! I feel better to know i wasn’t too far off. So I set the stage with all the props and then subtly trigger their creative juices and let the magic happen! I’m feeling so much more confident now and am ready to get started next week!! Thank you again Meri! <3
Transforming trash into beautiful art and craft pieces is now a global practice. Why don’t you give it a try? Here are some interesting ways to recycle and reuse items that usually end up in a bin! https://www.parentcircle.com/article/art-made-out-of-waste-material/
Wow! Such an amazing and helpful post this is. I really love it. It’s so good and so awesome.
this is really perfect I liked it

31 Crafts for 5 Year Olds
Home » DIY » 31 Crafts for 5 Year Olds
You’ve found the right place, so bookmark this post to reference it year-round to keep your little ones busy. Today, I have thirty-one crafts for five-year-olds !
Although five-year-olds are not nearly as busy in a tactile way, they are still in an age group that is curious and excited by working with their hands in more structured ways.
Gathering enough of those crafts or ideas can get a little tricky.
From jewelry to dinosaurs to microphones and binoculars, there’s a project for every kid between the toddler phase and full-fledged independent play kid.
Crafts vary in complexity, of course, but nothing unmanageable and is easily customizable.
As always, the projects are price-friendly and use many common home goods, objects, or tools.
Also, if you can upcycle other objects into these crafts, it’s all the sweeter–reusing items instead of throwing them out is always a good idea.
I hope the five-year-old in your life and you enjoy the post as much as I do! We keep many crafts here in our back pockets because my kids still ask to do them post-five.
And now, on to the post!
1. Paper Ring
Source: craftsyhacks.com
As mentioned, five-year-olds are curious creatures and start noticing everything. If your kid is into jewelry, consider making these paper rings together.
Grab any paper the kid or kid loves and customize each with gemstones, glitter, and the like. This pack of paper is an eclectic mix and should have an option for everyone.
2. DIY Microphones
Source: soeasybeinggreen-blog.com
Say goodbye to using hairbrushes as home microphones and make these fun glittery ones! A toilet paper or paper towel roll does most of the work–all that is left to do is decorate.
3. Painting With Salt
Source: momminfromscratch.com
Painting with salt is a great option for the curious and motivated artist–there’s a bit of technique to it, so have everything ready.
The first two steps–are applying glue and adding the salt since they rely on one another.
Watercolors work best since they move more independently through a liquid.
4. Toy Binoculars
Source: lovelyindeed.com
These toy binoculars are the perfect addition to any adventurous little one! Again, TP rolls are the champion here; just add some of this glue and decorate.
For an extra addition, punch two holes on either side of the binoculars to add a yarn or string strap.
5. Paper Squishies
A child of any age loves squishies, so why not turn their favorites into a smaller tabletop version?
Talk with them to see if they’d rather fully craft the design themselves or if you should print a template.
Regardless of the route the kid takes, this cute craft turns out just darling. Opt to make two so their Squishie can have a friend.
6. Paper Chains
Source: diycandy.com
A classic but a favorite amongst kids, great for birthday or holiday decor, a countdown counter, or adding it into some other craft, it can do no wrong.
Stick with one color, opt for multi-color, and they get to practice those scissor skills!
7. Dinosaur Toilet Paper Roll Craft
Source: conservamome.com
Toilet paper roll crafts may never get old because you can do anything with the tube. Stick with this cute long neck, or choose a favorite dinosaur or dinosaur.
If you’re straying, the construction may look a little different! Don’t be afraid to get creative, and make sure to share if you do.
This is one of the most fun crafts for boys !
8. Coffee Filter Flowers
If you’re looking for a sweet, cheap, and easy gift to make for a loved one from a kid in their life, these coffee filter flowers are a great option.
Make a big, beautiful bouquet of these; the most detailed part of it all is the drying time of the filters.
Grab this pack of coffee filters , and you’ll never need to buy any again (for crafts, anyway).
9. Q-Tip Painted Dragonfly
Source: projectswithkids.com
Try this Q-Tip painted dragonfly craft for kids who need to practice hand-eye coordination or fine motor skills.
Q-Tips are a great alternative tool to paint, and since it’s a different size, children have to hold the new brush intentionally while doing the same while painting.
Have a few different Q-Tips available in different color pots to keep the dots clean on the dragonfly.
10. Handprint Bookmarks
For the avid readers in the bunch, these handprint bookmarks are the perfect oversized marker to keep their page.
Smaller bookmarks always seem to get lost, so this handprint has a harder chance of disappearing (which isn’t impossible).
Add a popsicle stick like these to give them extra security and support within the book.
11. Pop-Up Rainbow Card
Source: redtedart.com
This pop-up rainbow card is the perfect catch-all card for a kid to make for a friend, family member, or other loved figure in their life.
A simple accordion fold for the cute rainbows glued to the card will do the job.
If you make this card during a specific time of the year, have them color the rainbows a solid or corresponding color of holiday or season.
12. DIY Play Dough
Source: craftsbyamanda.com
Naturally, Play Dough is a must for a child, but the brand name can get pricy quickly. Also, you can completely customize your play dough stash by color, amount, and even scent.
13. Apple and Pumpkin Fine Motor Activity
Source: busybloomingjoy.com
If you’re looking to add a little bit of a challenge to a project for your youngsters, consider this cute fall-themed fine motor activity.
The project is delicate, and more so, depending on the paper you choose to use.
14. Beaded Wind Chime
Source: artsyfartsymama.com
Nature-loving kids will love this beaded wind chime, although, admittedly, you can keep this indoors.
Have a nature walk before assembly in case they find anything they’d like to add to the chime while constructing.
15. Salt Dough
Salt dough is similar to play dough but works more as a clay option if you have some sculptors in your life.
Traditionally, salt dough is used to make holiday ornaments, but it can be used to make any figurine or decor item they’d like to try.
Look for specific directions in my post titled “DIY Salt Dough.”
16. Apple Paper Plate Lacing Activity
This apple paper plate lacing activity is another great option for hand-eye coordination practices.
Before the activity, prick or punch holes into the plate so the kids can jump right in, trying their hand at stringing the plate.
17. Jellyfish Craft
Source: simplyfullofdelight.com
Jellyfish are an aquatic creature kids just seem to love, so this paper jellyfish craft is a no-brainer.
It’s simple and doable with essentially any material you have on hand, and of course, you can decorate it however you want.
Your kiddos might also have fun with this DIY paper spider craft!
18. Handprint Paper Plate Sun
Source: familyfocusblog.com
Too cool for school, this handprint paper plate sun shines brighter than most. Trace one or two of the kids’ hands and then use those as templates–it’ll save a lot of wiggle time.
Stick with one tone of yellow or a few to make the sun even brighter. Also, to give you a head start, grab these yellow paper plates .
19. Paper Plate Hot Air Balloon
Source: taminglittlemonsters.com
Hot air balloons have a perfect whimsy for a kids’ craft, and using a paper plate is the perfect multi-dimensional addition.
The best part about this paper plate craft is that each one is completely different from the last because the kids get to decorate it.
20. Paper Mache
Paper Mache is normally strictly associated with pinatas, and for good reason, but the craft can be used to make essentially anything!
Anything from dinosaurs to letters is possible with planning or YouTube tutorials.
Start small, get comfortable with the medium, and grow if the project is a hit with the kids.
21. Marshmallow Squish Art
Source: steampoweredfamily.com
These bagged art sensory activities are, of course, the stuff of adults’ dreams, but kids may love squishing it just as much without cleanup.
The marshmallows give the experience a whole other feel as they incorporate the paint and other additives.
22. Earth Day Activity
Source: theinspirationedit.com
Talking about the world can be a little hard for a kid to grasp fully. Using this globe activity can help jump the gap.
It’s a great way to introduce what the world looks like, what the colors mean, and where you’re located. Or, just having a fun craft for the day is perfect, too.
23. Toilet Paper Roll Bracelet
Source: amumtomum.com
These bracelets are so fun and caterable to each child. Some used them as superhero cuffs, while others used them to complement an ensemble.
There needs to be at least a cut across to fit most wrists–the way you cut it is up to the designer.
This is one of the best toilet paper tube hacks to try!
24. Unicorn Paper Plate Craft
Source: mamaofminis.com
Paper plates, as always, will be one of the best canvases for kid art projects. This unicorn craft is simple but completely adorable to make at a party, sleepover, or group setting.
All the unicorns can play together after they are completed.
25. Ice Painting
Source: thebestideasforkids.com
Kids will get a kick out of ice painting and the process it takes to set up. Grab an ice cube tray like this and fill each with water and a different dab of color (watercolor works best).
Stick popsicle sticks into each square and freeze. Once frozen, pull them out and let them create.
26. Ice Cream Handprint
Source: simpleeverydaymom.com
As the weather starts to warm up, or if it’s a day when everyone is craving ice cream, break this craft out!
These ice cream handprints are just darling, and everyone can pick out their favorite flavor through the color of their paper.
27. Paper Bag Dog Puppet
Source: ottawamommyclub.ca
Paper bag puppets are a classic and cute project that can be anything, but today, it’s this sweet little pup.
Alter the dog’s look if the kids have a favorite or family dog; assembling the pieces may take extra time.
Add a ball or favorite toy to the foreground for a cute touch. Grab this pack of paper bags –it’s a great deal.
28. Crayon Name Craft
This sweet crayon name craft is a cute and academic craft to pull out any time of the year.
Letter recognition is an important skill to learn, making it a little less intimidating for those who may struggle with it.
Shuffle up the letters before giving them to the child so they can piece it together. Make sure they know they need it checked before pulling out the glue.
29. Turtle Paper Plate Craft
Source: bethannaverill.com
Turtles are another favorite aquatic animal that is so easy and customizable with materials to make. Of course, one of the easiest ways to construct this turtle is to use a paper plate.
Grab a few different sizes of paper plates to make a family of turtles.
30. Paper Bag Jellyfish
Source: twokidsandacoupon.com
I can’t get enough of these paper bag jellyfish–completely adorable, bright, and easy. Opt for a lighter-colored bag so it’s easier to paint or color your jellyfish.
Don’t cut the tentacle before decoration, but after everything has dried. It’s much easier to do it when everything is dry and avoids gunking up the scissors.
31. Beaded Snakes
Source: homanathome.com
Finally, these cute beaded snakes close up the post for today. Pipe cleaner and beads are always a winning combination that produces endless results.
These beads are the key to these slinky and shiny snakes. Opt for a singular color or go rainbow with it–they will all be excellent.

Best Craft Ideas for Preschool and Early Elementary
Published: Nov 24, 2015 · Modified: Jun 13, 2021 by Jenn · This post may contain affiliate links.
“Can we do a craft?” is something I hear every single day, often multiple times. At 5 years old, Sweet T has pretty much abandoned toys in favor of crafts, books, and games. While I’m all for creativity, It’s not practical for me to sit beside her for hours each day while she crafts to her heart’s content, so I often need crafts for 5 year olds that she can do on her own. Here are a few of her favorite crafts to do so far.
Best Crafts for 5-Year-Olds
1. Melty Beads – Melty Beads are Sweet T’s favorite craft by far to do independently. Obviously I have to iron them for her, but she will content herself for at least an hour at a time executing melty beads creations. Honestly, I’m surprised since the product is recommended for ages 6+ and she’s not one to enjoy anything remotely challenging, but she’s actually had the attention span and drive for melty beads since she was 4! Here are a few of her completed Perler bead craft pieces.
The best thing about Perler Bead crafts? They are so affordable! This bucket of Perler beads with pegboards has lasted several months even at the rate Sweet T crafts. That is a lot of bang for 8 bucks!
2. Washi Tape – This is one of the most simple, affordable crafts for 5 year olds that Sweet T can do independently. The nice thing about washi tape crafts is that they can be simple or more complex. When Sweet T needs to craft on her own, I let her get into my washi tape stash and go nuts with paper, markers, and washi. She enjoys making cards and envelopes for her friends and I’ve given her a notebook to create her own pretend personal planner with since that’s what she sees me using washi for.
You can also create more elaborate projects together if you’re available to help a little.
For Christmas this year, Sweet T is getting some washi tape of her own (I gotta keep that little washi hog out of my stash! 🙂 )
More cool crafts for 5 year olds who love washi tape….
3. Shrinky Dinks – Shrinky Dinks have stood the test of time and remain a fun craft for 5-year-olds. I loved making them when I was a girl and Sweet T and I make them together now. Hubs still has a few of the Shrinky Dinks my little cousin gave him more than a decade ago. He’s 18 years old now so these are pretty special.
Shrinky Dinks come in kits that appeal to both boys and girls.
4. Paint Your Own Kits – Sweet T loves to break out the paint and as long as surfaces are covered and old clothes are worn, I’m happy to let her. She has one of these Paint Your Own Birdhouse kits on the way from The Discovery Channel Store that should feed her crafting need for a little while. I like that it comes pre-assembled so that moms and dads are responsible to put anything together before the child can get started painting.
5. Art for Kids Hub on YouTube
If you’ve got paper and some Sharpies you’re all set for hours of fun! You might want to get them a notebook or sketch pad to draw in to keep everything together. Otherwise, you’ll be like us and have 50 drawings scattered across the house!
I may a future Pinterest queen on my hands. Does your 5 year-old love to craft as much as mine does?

19 art activities for 3, 4 and 5 year olds using paint
Art activities for preschoolers are as important to your child’s development as reading, writing and other physical development skills. We’ve pulled together 19 art activities for 3, 4 and 5 year olds using paint . These paint activities are perfect for toddlers, and most can easily be extended for older kids too.
We love using paint at the Kiwi Families HQ. I think some parents are a little worried about how messy it can be, and how long it takes to set up and pack away. And these are valid concerns. But the benefits to your child’s development far outweigh a few painty fingerprints on the table.
There seems to be a bit of a trend now where parents are leaving things like paint activities up to the daycare, or early childhood learning centres to manage. This could be a real mistake for 2 reasons.
Firstly, the younger you start children with paint, the better. As early as 1 year old, and even younger is fine. PennState University says most early educators place value on painting with very young children. They list benefits such as learning to express emotion, using their senses and learning to perceive the world around them.
Secondly, the process of painting is as important as the actual activity itself. Through active conversations with your child (eg ‘I really like these brushstrokes here, can you tell me more about them?’), you can gain deeper insights into your child’s thinking. There’s real connection to be made through painting together. Michigan State University even puts art in the wellbeing category:
free expression is also good for overall health and well-being. Giving your child a creative outlet can help relieve stress and work through things happening in their lives. By encouraging artistic expression, you can help facilitate learning.
The best thing about using paint though, is that the options and outputs are endless. Forget about the classic easel and water colour paint setup you see at playcentres. This is all about letting your child explore whole environments with interesting objects, and really growing their curiosity and creative thinking skills.
There are real benefits to creative play . Your child will develop skills they’ll take into adult life. And these are skills that are highly sought after in today’s modern workplaces.
1. Let your children experiment with a range of different brushes or tools . You can try different painting tools, including sponge brushes, fan brushes, rollers and scrapers, or let them explore household objects, like feathers, toothpicks or cotton buds.
2. Make your own shape stamps . All you need is some foam, a glue gun and some blocks of wood. Older kids will love helping you make the stamps. Once they’re made, just paint some paint onto the foam with brushes, and your child will create some amazing stamp pictures.
3. Make ‘ snail prints ‘ using a Pringles or tennis ball tin, or a baby formula can. All you need is the tin and lid, a few marbles, paint and paper. This great art activity is fun and noisy and makes really cool prints.
4. Fabric painting is a great activity for young children. Fabric paint is cheap and easy to use. You don’t need to rush out and buy something special to decorate. Just have a look through your closet, linen cupboard or garage, and see what you can find to upcycle.
5. Make ‘ string prints ‘. This is one of the simplest painting activities for kids you can do. All you need is string, paper, paint and a saucer. It’s a lot of fun and your child can create some really awesome designs.
6. Painted mason jars, or preserving jars, are such a cool craft right now. They can be used for heaps of different ideas. But one really quirky idea for painted storage jars is to use them for sorting and storing kids’ stationery and craft supplies.
7. This one is a little messy, you’ll definitely want some plastic sheeting down, or set it up outside on a fine day. Bubble printing art makes some really unique prints. You can frame the most interesting parts, or even cut them in strips, cover with clear plastic film, and turn them into bookmarks.
8. Shaving foam art is a little like bubble printing, but even messier! Your kids will love getting their hands covered in foam, and exploring the paint swirls. But the really cool thing is this activity makes really awesome artworks too.
9. Not quite sure about the messiness of shaving foam art? Have you tried the squishy shaving foam in a bag idea? Using a zip lock bag, shaving foam, and a little paint, you can create an awesome tactile art project, without the mess!
10. This is an oldie but a goodie. Make blotter bugs using just a folded piece of paper and a splodge of paint. This is a great painting activity for preschoolers, as you can teach children about mixing different colours.
11. Try painting a fabulous flag . This is a great art activity for boys, they’ll love hanging their flag on their door, or creating a pirate ship out in the garden!
12. Make a stained glass window effect using paint, PVA glue and dishwashing liquid. You can paint this mixture straight onto windows, or tape off clear film to the glass, and have them paint that.
13. This is a great kid’s painting idea that will have your kids coming back for more! Children just love this pour and press paint activity . It’s fairly easy to set up, and the final paintings are real works of art, with heaps of texture and movement.
14. If you can source dry powder paint, this is a really messy, but amazing activity. All you need to do is wet the paper and let your child explore by flicking the powdered paint onto the paper . It creates amazing, Monet-esque paintings!
15. Try mixing together the dry powder paint with wallpaper paste. Let your child explore making patterns through the paint, then give them a range of materials to stick on and make a collage.
16. You’ll love this paint art project for kids, as it’s suitable for all ages. It’s so cool to see how excited kids are to make their own banners. Every banner is unique , and they make a great wall hanging for any child’s room.
17. Painting salt dough ornaments is a fantastic rainy day activity. They’re traditionally used as Christmas tree ornaments, but could easily be turned into Teacher’s, or Mother’s Day gifts. Just use a quirky, or more meaningful cookie cutter.
18. This is a cool activity for warm summer days, and a real hit with toddlers. Give your child a tin can filled with water and a paintbrush, and let them ‘paint’ the fence . The water darkens the timber and looks like real paint going on. They’ll love watching it slowly dry, and painting it all over again!
19. Water paint and glitter art is another great painting effect. All you need is paint, paper, water and salt to make the background effect. Once you have the background you can embellish with glitter and paper cutouts to turn this into a stunning collage.
So, there you have it, 19 art activities for 3, 4 and 5 year olds using paint . Of course there’s 100s more ideas online. A great resource for getting your imagination running is Pinterest, just search for ‘children’s paint activities’. I highly recommend doing this over a cup of tea, as you’ll easily write off a half hour of web surfing 🙂
Beyond this though, it really is just up to your own imagination and creativity. Use the ideas on this page to get you started, and together with your child, just play and see what you come up with.
If you’re at all worried about your toddler using paint, try out this edible paint recipe . By the age of 3 your toddler should be able to follow instructions for painting. But, some kids just love to eat things. It’s really good for things like finger painting, making hand or foot prints, or even whole body art!

13 Easy and Engaging Educational Crafts for 5 year Olds
13 Easy and Engaging Educational Crafts for 5 year Old’s
Create fun, easy, and engaging educational crafts for 5 year old’s.
Educational Crafts
Crafts are a great way to teach kids without them even knowing they are learning. It also creates a great hands on experience so they actually remember what they learn, and it doesn’t have to be super hard to put together.
I have a variety of crafts and ideas that you can use for education and learning. They come in all different sizes and subjects. I love teaching my kids through crafts and watching them learn. These are great crafts to do and have before your little one enters kindergarten and during preschool!
13 Educational Crafts for 5 year old’s
There are so many fun things you can do with science, almost everything is science. Here are 9 science projects that you can do with items that you already have in your house. Some of these include: Skittles experiment , rainbow experiment , and raindrops experiment. These are perfect for kids starting to learn science and seeing how cool it is!
Another great and fun science experiment is a balloon rocket. These could entertain my kids for hours.
Learning Math and Numbers
One great way to learn math is by creating a homemade Grocery Store. This activity requires a little more prep work, but it is great for learning money, addition, subtraction, and life skills. My kids played this for hours, and kids smaller than 5 enjoy this as well, even if they don’t get the math! I have a worksheet for this activity which includes fake money!
Teach your kids how to count with this Painting Caterpillar , it also helps with learning colors. It’s a simple painting activity that only uses your fingers. You can download my template for them as well.
Another great counting activity is Marshmallow Numbers. You can use my FREE templates, or make your own. You don’t have to use marshmallows, you can use anything small like peanuts, raisins, or M&Ms. It’s also a treat! If your 5 year old is already well acquainted with numbers, you could do the higher numbers, or start adding small numbers.
Learning Letters and the Alphabet
Alphabet learning blocks not only teach you letters, but they teach you phonics. Learn what words start with what letters, with pictures to help. This is also a great cutting and gluing activity!
Canvas Letters are a great craft that can easily be displayed after you’re done. Buy a nice little canvas for your little one to paint. If you put tape on it and then paint, you can make different letters. We like to do the first letter of our name so you can hang them in your room.
Color by letters is a fun coloring or painting activity to help kids learn letters. It’s like a color by number, but they have to find the right letters instead. I have a fun template you can download.
Numbers, Letters, and Everything in Between
Q-tip painting is a fun painting activity that is easier for clean up and makes things a little more creative. This activity can be done with shapes, numbers, letters, counting, and designs.
Get messy with this Shaving cream activity. It’s super easy to prep this activity, and can be pretty well contained. The kids have so much fun. Let them be creative, but you could also tell them to do certain letters, numbers, shapes, math problems, alphabet, or anything they might be learning!
If your 5 year old loves cars, they will love Toddler Car Art. It certainly is an interesting way to paint. This is great for numbers or letters. You can make a letter or number on a piece of paper and have them trace it with paint and a car.
Sidewalk Chalk is another creative way to learn. Go outside and write the alphabet on the sidewalk, or do numbers or a math problem.
As a bonus I wanted to add that a great educational tool for 5 year old’s that I love is Epic . It’s a reading and books website! If you wanted to get ahead on reading, you could check it out. Here is my review on it.
Educational crafts for 5 year old’s can be super simple and fun.

5 suspects assault man, then rob his Philadelphia home while others inside: Police
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are searching for five suspects who attacked a man and then later robbed his home while other residents were inside.
It happened around 1 a.m. Friday on the 6700 block of Ditman Street in the city's Tacony neighborhood.
Police say the suspects approached the 41-year-old man as he was returning home. The victim was then assaulted with a gun after being driven to another location.
"He was asked to give up his keys to his house and other information that he had," said Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.
Police say the suspects went back to the man's home and assaulted two other residents -- a 52-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man. The suspects then gained access to a safe and stole cash and jewelry before fleeing the scene.
"I don't know if they knew these people, but right now we don't have anything on a motive now other than robbery," said Vanore.
Police described the suspects as wearing dark-colored clothing and some had masks over their faces.
The relationship between the three victims is still unclear.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.

Poll Ranks Biden as 14th-Best President, With Trump Last
President Biden may owe his place in the top third to his predecessor: Mr. Biden’s signature accomplishment, according to the historians, was evicting Donald J. Trump from the Oval Office.
- Share full article
By Peter Baker
Peter Baker has covered the past five presidents, ranked seventh, 12th, 14th, 32nd and 45th in the survey.
President Biden has not had a lot of fun perusing polls lately. He has a lower approval rating than every president going back to Dwight D. Eisenhower at this stage of their tenures, and he trails former President Donald J. Trump in a fall rematch. But Mr. Biden can take solace from one survey in which he is way out in front of Mr. Trump.
A new poll of historians coming out on Presidents’ Day weekend ranks Mr. Biden as the 14th-best president in American history, just ahead of Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagan and Ulysses S. Grant. While that may not get Mr. Biden a spot on Mount Rushmore, it certainly puts him well ahead of Mr. Trump, who places dead last as the worst president ever.
Indeed, Mr. Biden may owe his place in the top third in part to Mr. Trump. Although he has claims to a historical legacy by managing the end of the Covid pandemic; rebuilding the nation’s roads, bridges and other infrastructure; and leading an international coalition against Russian aggression, Mr. Biden’s signature accomplishment, according to the historians, was evicting Mr. Trump from the Oval Office.
“Biden’s most important achievements may be that he rescued the presidency from Trump, resumed a more traditional style of presidential leadership and is gearing up to keep the office out of his predecessor’s hands this fall,” wrote Justin Vaughn and Brandon Rottinghaus, the college professors who conducted the survey and announced the results in The Los Angeles Times .
Mr. Trump might not care much what a bunch of academics think, but for what it’s worth he fares badly even among the self-identified Republican historians. Finishing 45th overall, Mr. Trump trails even the mid-19th-century failures who blundered the country into a civil war or botched its aftermath like James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce and Andrew Johnson.
Judging modern-day presidents, of course, is a hazardous exercise, one shaped by the politics of the moment and not necessarily reflective of how history will look a century from now. Even long-ago presidents can move up or down such polls depending on the changing cultural mores of the times the surveys are conducted.
For instance, Barack Obama, finishing at No. 7 this year, is up nine places since 2015, as is Grant, now ranked 17th. On the other hand, Andrew Jackson has fallen 12 places to 21st while Wilson (15th) and Reagan (16th) have each fallen five places.
At least some of that may owe to the increasing contemporary focus on racial justice. Mr. Obama, of course, was the nation’s first Black president, and Grant’s war against the Ku Klux Klan has come to balance out the corruption of his administration. But more attention today has focused on Jackson’s brutal campaigns against Native Americans and his “Trail of Tears” forced removal of Indigenous communities, and Wilson’s racist views and resegregation of parts of the federal government.
As usual, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson top the list, and historians generally share similar views of many presidents regardless of their own personal ideology or partisan affiliation. But some modern presidents generate more splits among the historians along party lines.
Among Republican scholars, for instance, Reagan finishes fifth, George H.W. Bush 11th, Mr. Obama 15th and Mr. Biden 30th, while among Democratic historians, Reagan is 18th, Mr. Bush 19th, Mr. Obama sixth and Mr. Biden 13th. Other than Grant and Mr. Biden, the biggest disparity is over George W. Bush, who is ranked 19th among Republicans and 33rd among Democrats.
Intriguingly, one modern president who generates little partisan difference is Bill Clinton. In fact, Republicans rank him slightly higher, at 10th, than Democrats do, at 12th, perhaps reflecting some #MeToo era rethinking and liberal unease over his centrist politics.
The survey, conducted by Mr. Vaughn, an associate professor of political science at Coastal Carolina University, and Mr. Rottinghaus, a professor of political science at the University of Houston, was based on 154 responses from scholars across the country.
Peter Baker is the chief White House correspondent for The Times. He has covered the last five presidents and sometimes writes analytical pieces that place presidents and their administrations in a larger context and historical framework. More about Peter Baker

Columbus police: 5-year-old in Amber Alert found dead in sewage drain
COLUMBUS (WXIX) - Columbus police have located the body of 5-year-old Darnell Taylor who was abducted from his home by his legal guardian.
According to Columbus Police Chief Elaine Byrant, Taylor’s body was found Friday morning after police located and arrested the suspect, 48-year-old Pammy Maye.
Police were dispatched to the 4000 block of Teatman Avenue for a report of a woman walking suspiciously around a business, Chief Bryant explained. Responding officers identified the woman as Maye and took her into custody without incident. She was later transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
Investigators interviewed Maye where she told them that the 5-year-old’s body was in the 1000 block of Marsdale Avenue. Officers found Taylor’s body in a sewage drain at that address around 1 a.m., Bryant said.
“This is not the outcome that we wanted. But we’re gonna make sure that we do everything that we can to bring justice for Darnell,” the chief told the media.
On Wednesday, an AMBER Alert was issued for Taylor after he and Maye, his adoptive mother, went missing from their home in the 900 block of Reeb Avenue.
Police said Taylor was in danger after receiving a report from Maye’s husband that she harmed the boy.
According to the 911 call, Maye’s husband told police that she woke him up in the middle of the night and said the child was “no longer with them” and that “he’s not alive anymore.” Screaming can be heard in the background of the call.
Documents obtained by WOIO say Maye covered her husband’s mouth and told him that she had a “plan” before fleeing.
The husband also told dispatchers that Maye was diagnosed with depression and bipolar disorder, but was taking medication for it, the 911 calls indicated. He agreed with the dispatcher that her behavior was “very out of character for her.”
About two hours after Maye and Taylor’s disappearance, the suspect’s 2015 grey Jeep Cherokee was spotted at an apartment complex in Brooklyn, Ohio.
Brooklyn police were dispatched, but said no one was inside of the vehicle, WOIO reported.
It was not until Thursday evening into early Friday morning that police located the victim and the suspect.
Federal, state and local agents assisted Columbus police in the investigation, including the FBI, Bryant said.

Taekwondo instructor killed his 7-year-old student and the boy’s parents, Sydney police say

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A taekwondo instructor killed a 7-year-old student at his academy and the boy’s parents before going to a Sydney hospital with stab and slash wounds on his body, police said Wednesday.
Kwang Kyung Yoo, owner of the Lion’s Taekwondo and Martial Arts Academy and known to his students as Master Lion, will eventually be charged with three counts of murder, Homicide Detective Superintendent Daniel Doherty said.
The crimes were discovered after the instructor admitted himself to a hospital on Monday night suffering “stab wounds or slash wounds” to his chest, stomach and arms, Doherty said. He said the man told police he had been attacked in a supermarket carpark.
Police allege Yoo killed Min Cho, 41, and her son at his academy after a class on Monday before driving to their home, where he killed Cho’s husband and the boy’s father, Steven Cho, 39. Police did not officially release the victims’ names, but the adults were identified in media reports.
Police discovered the bodies Tuesday and arrested Yoo at the hospital.
Police have yet to reveal a motive. They knew all four were born in South Korea and the slain boy had been a regular taekwondo student.
“We’re still establishing what other connections or ... what other relationships may have been or may not have been,” Doherty said.
Unnamed police sources told media the mother and son were strangled. The father was stabbed to death. Police have yet to determine how Yoo’s injuries were inflicted.
“It’s not only tragic in the circumstances, but the consequences were cataclysmic. We’ve just lost three people from one family who’ve had their lives taken away,” Doherty added.
Yoo drove the woman’s BMW sedan from the academy to the family home and then to the Sydney hospital, media reported.
He underwent surgery for his wounds and understood that he was under arrest, Doherty said.
“There was no warnings, from what we have gathered so far. It was out of the blue. It wasn’t something that was forewarned or planned,” Doherty said.
The maximum penalty for someone convicted of murder in New South Wales state is life imprisonment, with a standard non-parole period of 20 years for the murder of an adult and 25 years for the murder of a child.
