Comcast Has Questions About New Joint Venture Sports Streaming Platform from Top Rivals

The new streaming service has left important questions in the mind of cable providers, such as contract issues, price, and more.

As sports fans try to determine whether or not they’ll have room in their budget for the new joint venture sports streamer on the way from Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery , sports leagues and cable providers have plenty of questions about the service. Comcast is particularly confused as it is not only a channel owner with extensive sports rights via NBCUniversal, but also the owner of the largest pay-TV provider in the country, meaning that it has significant contracts with all three of the media entities involved in the JV. However, it appears that Comcast was left in the dark about the forthcoming streamer until it was officially announced. Though it has not issued an official statement of support or opposition, Front Office Sports reports that privately, the company has both questions and concerns.

  • Comcast is asking similar questions to the public about the JV streamer, including its name, price, and structure.
  • The company is also seeking more information about how the streamer will affect cable contracts between Disney, Fox, and WBD and their distributors.
  • As a cable company Comcast is threatened by the new streaming service, but as a broadband provider it stands to benefit as well.

Comcast in the Dark

FOS spoke to Comcast sources who were caught just as unaware as the general public when the new JV sports streamer was announced. It seems plain that Disney, Fox, and WBD did not reach out to their existing channel distribution partners to give them a heads-up before announcing their new streaming platform, despite the fact that the wider availability of sports will have a dramatic impact on their businesses. Now everyone, including Comcast and Fubo, is in catch-up mode .

The standard questions, such as what will the streamer be named, what will it cost , and who will lead its efforts are all on Comcast’s mind, but more importantly is the question of how it will coexist with cable distributors with larger channel packages, like Comcast’s Xfinity TV.

These myriad questions have reportedly gone unanswered at this point, and that is raising issues around the industry. Multiple reports indicate that this streamer won’t just include live sports from the channels that join it, but livestreams of those channels. Will Disney still be able to demand the highest carriage fee of any cable channel for ESPN if it’s offering a way to watch the channel without a pay-TV subscription for the first time? How will Disney, Fox or WBD approach negotiations with distributors now that they’re getting ready to offer a (presumably) lower-cost option for streaming top sports channels?

Can JV Streamer Coexist With Peacock?

Comcast owns NBCUniversal and its streaming service Peacock , which carries a wide variety of live sports. Peacock gained notoriety as a sports streamer this winter when it streamed an NFL Wild Card game that audiences could not watch anywhere else unless they lived in the market of the teams playing.

There are sports fans can watch on Peacock that won’t be available on the JV streaming platform. For example, Peacock will stream every single event of this year’s Summer Olympics from Paris; fans will only be able to see recaps and highlights on other outlets. Still, the JV streamer could pose a serious threat to Comcast’s cable business, as it does all pay-TV providers who may have a large contingent of subscribers who are only signed up to watch live sports.

Comcast’s position as a broadband provider may insulate it from the effects of the JV streamer on its cable segment, however. Comcast has more than 32 million broadband customers in the United States, and live sports can drive serious internet usage; the exclusive NFL Wild Card game on Peacock consumed 30% of total internet traffic in the country when it was on, for example.

There could also be opportunities to offer a soft bundle of the new JV streamer with Peacock for a discounted price, but that too could encourage cord-cutting from Comcast cable subscribers. Comcast has been trying to more closely integrate its broadband and cable segments of late; its Xumo joint venture with Charter Communications provides a digital platform for selling pay-TV-by-internet plans from both companies, and that platform may include the JV sports streamer in the future.

Comcast has not put out a statement castigating the new streaming platform as Fubo has done , but it has not signaled its support either. Comcast may benefit from the new service, or it may suffer because of its existence, which explains why it has myriad questions about the new platform.

Peacock is a subscription video streaming service from NBCUniversal that includes original shows, blockbuster movies, and classic television series. Peacock is home to “Yellowstone,” and “The Office,” as well as original hits like “Poker Face” and “Bel-Air.” You can also watch live sports including NFL, MLB, WWE, Olympics, Premier League, NASCAR, French Open, College Football and Basketball, and PGA Tour. Premium Plus subscribers can stream their local NBC feed in all 210 markets.

Peacock includes news, entertainment, sports, late-night, and reality from various NBCU properties including NBC , Bravo , and E! .

Peacock also includes the entire library of Bravo shows and has exclusives like “Below Deck: Down Under.” They also include live and on-demand access to Hallmark channels.

The company has acquired the rights to many classic shows like “Parks and Recreation,” and the entire Dick Wolf library including “Law & Order” and “Chicago Fire.”

The service also features blockbusters and critically-acclaimed films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation, Illumination and content acquired from Hollywood’s biggest studios.

Sports and Entertainment Package

@ComcastBusiness - I just spent the better part of the morning and early afternoon with support (the people were extremely nice and tried to help, but even they couldn't get to this information).  They keep sending me what my total package currently is with other packages for comparison.  All I want is to know what channels are in the Sports and Entertainment package.  This should be simple for me to get on my own (I should easily be able to find what I'm paying for), but for support it should take about 10 seconds.  I am beyond FRUSTRATED!!!!!  LET ME KNOW WHAT I AM PAYING FOR!!!!  I have been very hesitant to switch to FIOS now that it's available, but this may push me over the edge.  Please don't send me the total lineups of my package, I've now been sent 6 copies of it even tho I just want to know what channels are included in the Sports and Entertainment Package and what tiers I am allowed to purchase that package with

What Channel Is ESPN On?

Got sports on the brain? Learn how to watch ESPN and its sister networks via cable, satellite, and live TV streaming services.

' data-src=

Share | Dec 7, 2023

Since its launch in 1979, ESPN has regularly revolutionized how we watch sports on TV. Of course, sports broadcasting has changed a lot in recent years. Over-the-top streaming services like Amazon Prime Video , Paramount+ , and Peacock are revving up their live sports content. But there’s still much demand for the traditional ESPN channels because of their exclusive programming.

In this play-by-play guide, we outline how to add ESPN channels to your viewing roster. We also explain the difference between ESPN and ESPN+ . And, if you already have an existing TV subscription, we’ll point you in the right direction to find the channel number for ESPN.

Score a TV provider with ESPN

The first step in getting ESPN channels is determining what providers are in your area. Enter your zip code below to find the best TV service for your home turf.

  • ESPN channel numbers

Get ESPN with cable or satellite

Get espn with a live tv streaming service, what’s on espn, what is the channel for espn on tv.

ESPN channel numbers can vary by TV provider location. Only satellite services like DIRECTV and DISH maintain consistent channel numbers because they’re available nationwide.

Pro tip: To find ESPN channel numbers specific to your area, click “View Plans” in the table below and enter your zip code on the provider’s website.

ESPN channel availability on popular TV providers

Data as of post date. Offers and availability may vary by area and are subject to change. *ESPNews, ESPNU, and ESPN Deportes may require higher-tiered plans or add-on subscriptions.

Bask in the winning spirit with ESPN

Enter your zip code to see TV providers in your area. You can also view plans and explore channel lineups specific to your location.

Most cable and satellite TV providers offer ESPN and other important sports channels like FOX Sports 1 (FS1) and CBS Sports Network. No matter which service you go with, you’re bound to find coverage of your favorite sport.

Here are four of our favorite cable and satellite TV providers:

  • Spectrum ($64.99/mo.)
  • Xfinity ($20.00–$80.00/mo.)
  • DISH ($84.99–$114.99/mo.)
  • DIRECTV ($69.99–$159.99/mo.)

Pro tip: When shopping for a TV plan, you should keep regional sports networks (RSNs) and league-specific channels on your radar. MLB Network, NBA TV, NFL Network, and NHL Network come in handy for watching the major pro leagues.

All the major live TV streaming services carry ESPN channels. Each service has its pros and cons, so we recommend visiting our Best Streaming Services for Sports page to review how they stack up sportswise.

One of our favorite services to stream ESPN is Hulu + Live TV . Not only does it come with ESPN and ESPN2, but it also has ESPN College Extra, ESPNews, and ESPNU in its base plans. And if that’s not enough ESPN for you, Hulu + Live TV includes ESPN+ at no extra cost. That means you can seamlessly navigate between the traditional ESPN channels and ESPN+ content, all within the Hulu app.

For reference, here’s a quick look at all five of our top ways to watch ESPN without cable:

  • DIRECTV STREAM ($69.99–$159.99/mo.)
  • Fubo ($32.99–$99.99/mo.)
  • Hulu + Live TV ($76.99–$89.99/mo.)
  • Sling TV ($40.00–$55.00/mo.)
  • YouTube TV ($72.99/mo.)

To stream live TV—especially live sports—you want fast and reliable internet. Check out our Best Internet for Streaming guide for ways to improve your streaming experience.

ESPN vs. ESPN+

ESPN upped its game in 2018 when the worldwide leader in sports expanded into streaming with ESPN+ . While the streaming service is a popular destination for UFC , soccer , and college sports, it’s also a source of confusion because it doesn’t carry the same live content from the main ESPN channels.

While ESPN+ is accessible in the ESPN app , you need a separate TV provider login to access anything from ESPN and ESPN2. Sometimes ESPN+ features simulcasts from the main ESPN channels—it occasionally happens with Monday Night Football . But you’re better off pairing ESPN+ with a cable, satellite, or live TV streaming service for total ESPN coverage.

What’s the cheapest way to get ESPN?

Sling TV

Data effective as of post date. Compatible device and internet connection required. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Sling TV offers the cheapest way to get ESPN. The Sling Orange plan costs $40 a month and comes with ESPN and ESPN2. You even get in-app access to ESPN3, a digital-only overflow network that airs tons of live sports that ESPN can’t fit onto its main channels.

The biggest downside to Sling TV is that it doesn’t carry many local channels, which are vital for watching events like the Super Bowl and the World Series . Luckily, an over-the-air (OTA) antenna can pick up channels in your area, and there’s a slick Sling TV deal featuring a free antenna. Plus, ESPN3 usually simulcasts extra Formula One coverage and live sports airing on ABC , so you can still get those marquee ESPN on ABC broadcasts through Sling TV.

ESPN airs news and analysis programs, debate shows, documentaries, and live games. The channel basically covers every sport under the sun—especially when ESPN8: The Ocho programming rolls around each year with its obscure sports. Delivering sports content 24/7 is a bold strategy, but it pays off for us fanatics.

Here’s just a fraction of what you’ll find on ESPN and ESPN2.

  • College Football Final

What’s ESPN?

ESPN is a basic cable network dedicated to all things sports. Founded in the late 1970s, the channel was originally the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. But that name eventually became “ESPN” before its debut on September 7, 1979, at 7 p.m. Eastern with the first broadcast of SportsCenter .

Over the years, ESPN helped popularize events like the NFL Draft and created its own, like the X Games. ABC’s purchase of ESPN in 1984 took the channel to another level, introducing more live games from leagues like MLB , NBA , NFL , and NHL . Now, ESPN is still that same channel from 1979 airing SportsCenter daily, but it’s also a major media outlet with an international TV, radio, and internet presence.

What channel is ESPN on FAQ

Can you watch espn live for free.

No, there isn’t a long-term way to watch live ESPN channels for free. If you need quick access to ESPN, you can sign up for a free live TV streaming trial. Services like Fubo and YouTube TV usually offer free trials throughout the year.

Is the ESPN app free?

Yes, the ESPN app is free to download on mobile devices, smart TVs, and TV-connected devices like Amazon Fire TV , Apple TV , and Roku . To access the app’s live and on-demand ESPN programming (sometimes known as WatchESPN), you need to log in with an active TV provider subscription that includes ESPN channels.

Are ESPN and ESPN+ in the same app?

Yes, you can stream live ESPN channels and ESPN+ programming in the ESPN app and on ESPN.com. Video content exclusive to ESPN+ displays the ESPN+ logo in the top left corner to differentiate it from ESPN network programming.

Does ESPN Classic still exist?

No, ESPN Classic went off the air in the US at the end of 2021. Some ESPN Classic programming is now on ESPN+ and college conference channels like ACC Network, Longhorn Network, and SEC Network.

Philadelphia, PA

Comcast and The Walt Disney Company today announced the start of the rollout of Disney+ and ESPN+ on Xfinity, giving X1 and Flex customers access to the Disney+ library of movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, along with thousands of live sports events and original programming from ESPN+.

The launch means in the coming days tens of millions of customers will soon have access to Disney+ in an easy-to-use, state-of-the-art user interface that provides access to the best entertainment, just in time to enjoy the newly released series Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” and upcoming series “Big Shot,” premiering April 16, and “Secrets of the Whales,” premiering April 22.

With the launch of Disney+ and ESPN+, our X1 and Flex customers will now be able to enjoy all the best entertainment from today’s most popular streaming services on one device that makes it easy for them to find their favorite programming, or discover something new.

Additionally, ESPN+ is now available to Flex customers via the ESPN app, with plans to launch on X1 in the coming weeks. ESPN+ programming includes over 10,000 live sports events including exclusive UFC events, hundreds of MLB games, Golf (coverage from PGA Tour, The Masters and PGA Championship), an incredible lineup of international and domestic soccer (including the FA Cup, Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS, Copa Del Rey and more), college sports from 20 conferences, boxing and much more. ESPN+ also features exclusive ESPN+ Originals and signature studio shows like “Stephen A’s World,” “SportsNation” and “Peyton’s Places” – plus exclusive access to the entire library of ESPN’s award-winning “30 for 30” documentary films and more.

X1 and Flex customers can access Disney+ or ESPN+ by saying “Disney+” or “ESPN+” into the Xfinity Voice Remote or by saying the name of a desired title from one of the streaming services (like, “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” or “Stephen A’s World”). Xfinity customers will also be able to find the Disney+ and ESPN+ content libraries integrated throughout their user experience, including in collections such as “TV,” Movies,” “Sports” and more.

“With the launch of Disney+ and ESPN+, our X1 and Flex customers will now be able to enjoy all the best entertainment from today’s most popular streaming services on one device that makes it easy for them to find their favorite programming, or discover something new,” said Rebecca Heap, Senior Vice President, Video and Entertainment, Comcast Cable.

“The launch of Disney+ and ESPN+ on Comcast’s Xfinity platforms comes at an opportune time with the new Disney+ Original series from Marvel Studios ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ in full swing, the return of Coach Gordon Bombay in a new series ‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,’ and “Secrets of the Whales” from National Geographic premiering on Earth Day. It will be a big April on ESPN+ too with UFC 261, the start of MLB and MLS seasons, The Masters, and more,” said Michael Paull, President, Disney+ and ESPN+.

Disney+ and ESPN+ join a growing collection of streaming services available over the Internet on X1 and Flex including Peacock, Hulu, Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube, Vudu and Pandora, amongst many more.

Xfinity delivers all the best entertainment to customers via its X1 and Flex devices and through its leading Xfinity Internet service.  X1 provides the most comprehensive library of entertainment on one platform with thousands of choices – aggregating live TV, On Demand, and all the best apps. Xfinity Flex is a 4K streaming device included with Xfinity Internet that extends the best features of X1 to customers who prefer a streaming experience, with all the favorite video and music apps, as well as the ability to manage Xfinity WiFi, mobile, security and automation services – all controllable with the award-winning Xfinity Voice Remote.

Comcast, Disney reach new distribution agreement for Disney channels

Two television goliaths — Walt Disney Co. and Comcast Corp. — have reached a new multiyear distribution agreement that will keep Disney’s television channels, including ESPN, available to Comcast’s Xfinity TV cable customers.

As part of the deal, Comcast agreed to begin distributing ESPN’s Atlantic Coast Conference Network to its Xfinity subscribers.

Announced Tuesday, the renewal provides continued carriage of ESPN’s popular SEC Network as well as retransmission rights for the ABC-owned television stations in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Fresno, Houston and Raleigh, N.C.

Comcast customers also will have uninterrupted service of Disney’s suite of entertainment channels, including FX, Freeform, National Geographic and Disney Channel.

The agreement also extends an arrangement in which Comcast offers its customers easy access to streaming services Disney+ and ESPN+.

“We’re very happy to extend our longstanding relationship with Comcast and continue to provide their Xfinity customers with Disney’s best-in-class programming,” Sean Breen, a Disney executive vice president for distribution, said in a statement.

Deal lets Comcast customers watch Disney channels on the go

Jan. 5, 2012

The deal came without a threat of a dreaded TV blackout in December, when sports fans are keen to watch football on the ESPN channels. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The renewal continues a détente in a historically contentious relationship between the two TV giants.

In 2004, Comcast tried to swallow Disney — and Disney mobilized to reject the hostile takeover attempt. More than a decade later, the two sides battled again. In December 2017, after Disney’s former chief executive Bob Iger struck a deal with Rupert Murdoch to buy much of the elder mogul’s Fox entertainment empire for $52.4 billion, Comcast Chief Executive Brian Roberts jumped into the fray and tried to wrestle away the prize — infuriating Iger, according to people familiar with the situation.

Disney takes control of Hulu, building an arsenal for streaming wars

Hulu’s parents — Walt Disney Co. and Comcast Corp. — have agreed to an amicable divorce, giving the Burbank entertainment giant full custody of the streaming video site.

May 14, 2019

Comcast succeeded in plucking one property, the European satellite television operation Sky. But Disney had to pay significantly more than it had intended — $71.3 billion — to win the auction for the Fox assets.

The two companies separately have agreed to coexist as co-owners of the streaming service Hulu — at least for a few more years.

As part of the Fox deal, Disney claimed the controlling stake in Hulu , and Comcast wants to eventually unwind its ownership stake to focus on its nascent Peacock streaming service. In 2019, the two companies reached a truce in which Comcast will remain a partner in Hulu until 2024.

Disney considers Hulu the third prong in its direct-to-consumer bundling strategy with ESPN+ and Disney+.
