How Do You Teach Geometry in a Fun Way?

One thing that I’ve shared from my teaching journey is that I spent the first four years of my career teaching 2nd grade.

And I remember that teaching geometry to 2nd grade students was so fun and rewarding!

I had just as much fun with it as they did. So, here are general tips I want to share to help you get started:

  • Use hands-on activities and games . For example, you could have students create shapes with construction paper or use manipulatives such as pattern blocks to explore geometric shapes and patterns.
  • Embrace technology with your math lessons. We may feel sick of using devices for learning since 2020, but the reality is that they can really jazz up your geometry lesson. In fact, later in the post, I have some online games and apps you’ll enjoy.
  • Allow students to build 3-dimensional shapes using blocks with a partner or small groups. Remember, hands-on is great for teaching geometry. And kids will have fun working with their friends!

I cannot stress the hands-on aspect enough as you teach geometry to 2nd grade. Since learning shapes is a visual skill with lots of abstract concepts included, your kids will need concrete examples to help them master the foundation of geometry.

What is Geometry for 2nd Grade?

No matter what set of state standards you use, most 2nd grade math curriculums will cover the following geometry concepts:

  • two and three dimensional shapes
  • congruency, symmetry, area and perimeter
  • vertices, faces, and edges
  • polygons vs. non-polygons

Since 2nd grade geometry covers shapes and space, be prepared to help students tell the difference between flat and 3D shapes.

These are just the basics that I wanted to cover, so now we can dive into the nitty-gritty details for how to teach geometry to 2nd grade in a fun way.

#1- Engage Your Students in Math Talks

One of the game-changer activities I used to introduce students to geometry was with math talks.

I would show them pictures of real-life objects and scenes, then students had to identify different 2D and 3D shapes they noticed.

shapes activity grade 2

Not only did these interesting math talk sessions give my students confidence in using math vocabulary correctly, but it also helped them identify shapes in a non-intimidating way.

Now of course, I would review basic shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Next, I would challenge students to locate different shapes in the pictures.

Math Talks also works an a partner activity when teaching virtually. So, if you teach online, you can have engaging math talks through Zoom breakout rooms as well!

#2- Enjoy Shapes Scavenger Hunts

If you’ve spent any time on this site, you know I love a good scavenger hunt.

They present a wonderful way to teach geometry to 2nd grade.

By creating a scavenger hunt, the students can explore their surroundings and practice their geometry skills. For example, have the students look for shapes in the classroom or school hallways . They can also look for examples of symmetry and shapes in magazines or picture books. As the students explore their environment, they can record their answers on a worksheet or chart.

Through this activity, your students can learn about different shapes, their properties, and how to measure them. In addition, it can help them develop their problem-solving and critical thinking skills.  It will also make learning geometry more enjoyable and engaging for the students.

#3–Play FREE Geometry Apps

Even before COVID forced full-time digital learning on everyone, I loved giving my students computer or iPad time playing learning games.

You’ll be surprised at how many great math apps you have to choose from when it comes to free games that review skills.

shapes activity grade 2

Of course, finding them will depend on what type of device you’re using. To help you get the ball-rolling, I recommend the free geometry game above. It doesn’t have an exciting or flashy title, but my students never let that stop them from enjoying it.

Here’s a review from another teacher who enjoys this game: “ This is a great geometry app for beginners. This is motivating for students and they learn so much from it. It teaches basic terminology and concept. “

#4–Review Shapes with Geometric Puzzles

Here we go with our first fun hands-on activity! I can’t imagine teaching geometry without block puzzles!

shapes activity grade 2

When shopping for these kind of math manipulatives , I always looked for the ones that had flash cards showing different designs students could make with the shapes.

To fully connect it to your shapes lessons, you can have students write a paragraph to go with their design. The paragraph must include detailed sentences describing the different polygons used.

OR depending on how much time you have, allow students to partner up and verbally describe their creation to a classmate. The mini-presentation should include shape names and other attributes like, “My dragon has an octagon head with 8 vertices.”

#5–Play Geometry “I Spy”

Ever wondered what quick learning activity you could do during a short transition? Well, my friend this is definitely one of them!

When my students were packed up and waiting on the end-of-the-day bell to ring, we would play this as a whole group.

I pulled names that were on popsicles sticks and had one student at a time come to the front to describe a shape they saw somewhere in the classroom.

But they would begin with “I spy with my little eye…” The other kids had to raise their hand to take guesses on what their classmate was describing.

The main rule I implemented was that they HAD to use “geometry talk” to describe their item.

#6–Use FREE Digital Shapes Lessons and Activities

Although I already recommended using free math apps to teach geometry to 2nd grade, this one is slightly different.

Animated games can be great, but sometimes you need students to complete non-game activities that can be just as engaging.

This is where interesting online lessons come to the rescue. Things like:

  • digital escape rooms
  • mystery picture activities online
  • self-checking digital review, etc.

shapes activity grade 2

As always, I got you covered my friend! This quick self-checking 2D and 3D shapes activity allows students to review polygons vs. non-polygons, as well as, the names of different shapes. And it’s completely FREE.

#7–Make Shapes with Play Dough

The seventh way to teach geometry to 2nd grade involves a substance that some people think is only for Kindergarteners.

But I’m here to tell you that it’s not just for Kinders…I’m talking about play dough!

Playing with play dough can be a fun way to teach geometry to 2nd grade students. It allows them to get creative and explore shapes in a tangible way. Students can use the dough to make circles, squares, triangles, and other shapes.

They can also use the dough to create 3D objects such as cubes, pyramids, and spheres. By manipulating the dough, students can learn about the properties of shapes such as their sides, angles, and faces.

This activity can also help students understand how different shapes can fit together to create larger shapes. By exploring these concepts with play dough, 2nd grade students can develop a better understanding of geometry and its application in the real world.

#8–Match 2D Shapes with their 3D Shapes Counterparts

One of the challenges my former students had to overcome was understanding that many 3D shapes had the face of certain 2D shapes.

That’s when I realized that sorting and matching these counterparts would make a great math center activity.

shapes activity grade 2

Just in case your students have the same challenge, incorporate any of these matching activities to help them with this skill:

  • Matching 3D blocks or shapes with their flat/2D version
  • Task cards with images of both 2D and 3D shapes for students to match
  • Go-Fish card games where students have to find the match
  • SCOOT games that reinforce this concept

You could even do a version of “write the room” where your kiddos walk around identifying which shape is the “face” of a certain three-dimensional figure.

#9–Introduce Geometry Read-Alouds

Combining books with math is my jam! I love using math read-alouds to jazz up the learning.

What Read-Alouds Teach Geometry to 2nd Grade?

These math books help reinforce important geometry concepts with fun story-telling:

  • If You Were a Quadrilateral by Molly Cece Barlow Blaisdell and Francesca Carabelli
  • The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns
  • If You Were a Polygon by Marcie Aboff
  • Perimeter, Area, and Volume: A Monster Book of Dimensions by David Adler
  • Square (Book 1 of The Shapes Trilogy) by Mac Barnett
  • Triangle (The Shapes Trilogy) –same author as above
  • Circle (Book 3 of The Shapes Trilogy) –same author as above
  • City Shapes by Diana Murphy

#10–Use Engaging No Prep Geometry Worksheets

Ok, full disclaimer here–I am one of those teachers who can’t stand just giving out worksheets, especially for math. To me, students learn best when they have fun hands-on activities or games.

BUT the reality is that we sometimes need great worksheets for things like:

  • early finishers
  • morning / bell ringer work, etc.

So, even though I prefer to teach geometry to 2nd grade using manipulatives, I also keep standards-aligned worksheets ready to use.

shapes activity grade 2

These print-and-go geometry worksheets cover a range of concepts related to shapes to 2nd graders.

I especially like how they are simple, but still rigorous. That way, students can complete them independently without getting frustrated at the challenge level.

#11–Play Geometry Bingo

Speaking of simple yet rigorous fun, another great way to teach geometry to 2nd grade is with bingo games!

shapes activity grade 2

Most bingo games are pretty straightforward, which is great because you don’t have to spend a lot of time teaching your students how to play them.

Plus, it gives everyone a break from having to complete worksheets or task cards. In addition to this, you could even break your students into groups of 4 and have them play geometry bingo as a math center activity.

#12–Review Angles with Charades

The twelfth way you could practice geometry concepts with your kiddos is to play what I call “Angles Charades.”

After you’ve taught them the different angles and their degrees, you can write these angles on index cards, then call students to the front of the class to hold up their arms to represent how it should look to the class.

The only student who will see the index card is the one at the front; the rest of the students must raise their hands to say what angle or degree is being acted out by their classmate.

Another way I’ve played it is:

  • I stand at the front of the class with the index cards that have the angles.
  • All the students stand up and wait for me to call out the different degress.
  • Then they hold up their arms to show me what the angle should look like.

Either version you choose offers a quick way to review geometry angles while allowing students to get out of their seats.

#13–Build Shapes and Angles with LEGOS

Along with the other geometry math center ideas from this list, you can add LEGOS to the mix. Remember how I said hands-on learning is best? Well, this is one of my favorites!

I like to buy those mini LEGO sets from The Dollar Tree where the LEGOS come in a storage box for only $1.25 each.

Having a class set of them is great because you’ll use them for so many different things! One example is to call out the names of different polygons and have students build them using their LEGOS.

#14–Watch Interesting Polygon Videos on YouTube

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then videos must be worth ten thousand!

There are so many interesting geometry videos on YouTube for kids that you can access completely free. If your school doesn’t allow YouTube–like mine–you can copy the video link and show it through Safe Share .

#15–Create Shape Collages

Last, but not least, I think it’s pretty cool and fun to combine math with art. Geometry makes this super easy since you can create collages out of shapes.

shapes activity grade 2

Challenge your students to create images using different shapes. You can even extend the activity by having them write a story to go with their picture. These make great bulletin board displays and a fun hands-on way to practice geometry!

More Ways to Teach About Shapes

Geometry is an important subject to teach second grade students, because it helps them learn problem solving, spatial reasoning, and other skills that are critical for mathematics learning.

When you use hands-on activities, games and visual aids, you can help your kiddos feel confident and happy learning this math skill.

So, which of the 15 ideas in this post is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below. Until then, Happy Teaching 🦋

Introducing 2D Shapes

shapes activity grade 2

How do you explain 2D shapes to kids?

Explaining 2D shapes to kids can be done in a simple and engaging way using visuals, everyday objects, and hands-on activities. Here's a step-by-step approach:

Introduce the concept

Start by explaining that 2D shapes are flat shapes that have two dimensions: length and width. 2D shapes can be drawn on a piece of paper or a flat surface.

Show examples Show examples

Show your kids various examples of 2D shapes, such as circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and hexagons. Use colorful pictures or real-life objects to illustrate each shape.

Name and describe shapes

Teach your kids the names of each shape and describe their characteristics.

Circle: a round shape with no corners and all points on the boundary equidistant from the center.

Square: a shape with four equal sides and four right angles.

Triangle: a shape with three sides and three angles.

Rectangle: a shape with two pairs of equal and parallel sides and four right angles.

Pentagon: a shape with five sides and five angles.

Hexagon: a shape with six sides and six angles.

Explore properties

Encourage your kids to identify the properties of each shape. For example, they can count the number of sides and corners, describe the angles, and compare the shapes based on their attributes.

Engage in hands-on activities

Provide opportunities for young students to explore 2D shapes through hands-on activities. This could include:

Tracing shapes with their fingers on paper or using tactile materials like clay or playdough.

Sorting objects based on their shapes.

Creating art projects using different 2D shapes.

Going on a shape hunt around a room or outdoors, looking for shapes in the environment.

Reinforce learning through play

Incorporate games and interactive activities to reinforce learning. For example:

Shape bingo: Create bingo cards with different 2D shapes and have kids match them to objects or pictures.

Shape matching: Provide cards with shapes and corresponding names, and have kids match them together.

Simon says: Give commands like "Simon says touch the square" or "Simon says find something that's shaped like a circle."

2d Shapes Worksheets Identifying 2d Shapes

Welcome to the 2nd Grade Math Salamanders 2d Shapes Worksheets page. Here you will find our selection of free shape worksheets to help you child to recognise and name some of the 2d shapes they will meet at 2nd grade.

The main focus on this page is the identification of different types of triangles: equilateral, isosceles and scalene, as well as right, acute and obtuse.

Children also start to look more closely at the properties shapes have to categorise them. Symmetry is introduced at this level, and children learn to find lines of symmetry by folding shapes or using mirrors. Children are encouraged to look more closely at shapes to recognise the differences between how the shapes are made up. Curved sides and straight sides in 2 dimensions, and curved and flat surfaces in 3 dimensions are identified.

At a 2nd grade level, children should learn to:

  • categorise triangles into right, equilateral and isosceles special cases;
  • categorise members of the quadrilateral family according to their properties;
  • identify a range of 3d shapes such as cylinders, spheres, cones, prisms and cuboids;
  • identify lines of symmetry;
  • identify a shape which has been flipped or folded.

Engaging 2D Shape Activities

For young students, learning and remembering shape names and attributes is an important foundational skill.  In order to master all of this new information, students need plenty of practice and repetition!  By bringing fun and engaging 2D shape activities into the classroom, students will be excited to learn about shapes.  Here are some of my favorite ways to teach basic shapes in kindergarten.

2D shape activities kindergarten

Shape Name and Attribute Activities

Many students come to kindergarten knowing a few of the basic shape names.  However, there are often shapes that they have not yet been introduced to quite yet.  Students often need to learn more about shape attributes, as well.  There are several helpful activities and resources that can help students learn and practice shape names and attributes.

2D Shape Readers and Posters

One way for students to learn about shape names and attributes is by creating 2D shape readers.  These printable shape books have space for students to write the shape name, the number of sides, and the number of vertices/corners.  The same information can also be displayed on a 2D shapes bulletin board with these fun posters!  There are a variety of options depending on size, word choice, and clipart choice. These posters are helpful to keep on display throughout the year so that students can continue to reference them when needed.

Triangle page of a 2D shape reader

All About 2D Shapes

Another way for students to practice shape names and attributes is with these All About 2D Shapes worksheets!  Students will trace and draw the shape three times.  Then they will write down the number of vertices and sides.  Students can also create either a shape person or a real life object.

All About Square Worksheet

Shape Sorting Activities

Another fun part of teaching shapes is showing students that shapes are all around them!  Shape sorting activities are a great way to help students see different examples of shapes.

Shape Sorting Worksheets & Pocket Chart

The first shape sorting activity that’s helpful for students who are learning 2D shapes is the “Is it a ____?” activity.  This sorting task can be done individually as a worksheet or as a whole group activity with pocket chart cards.  Students will be able to look at different examples of shapes and decide if it is the focus shape or not.

Is it a rectangle? 2D shape sorting activity

Fishing for 2D Shapes

This is another fun activity that students love!  Using a magnet on a fishing line, students can fish for cards that contain different types of shapes.  After naming the shape, students can then sort the cards based on the 2D shape. This is definitely an engaging way for young children to get plenty of repetition in identifying shapes.

Students playing 2D shape fishing game

Shape Building Activities

As students become more familiar with shapes, it is fun to have them practice building shapes on their own.

Find, Color, and Build

This multi-step 2D shape worksheet is great for a math center or small group activity. Students start by finding and coloring the correct shapes on the top of the worksheet. Then they can take small objects and build their own version of the shape.  This is fun to do with pretzel sticks, cereal, or any other small objects you have on hand.

Find, Color, and Build Worksheet for a square

2D Shape Puzzles

Your students will love building shapes with these fun 2D shape puzzles!  After coloring and assembling the picture containing the 2D shape, students can find and count the number of shapes in the picture below the puzzle. This activity also gives students an opportunity to trace the shape name as they color (or even rainbow write) the shape name at the top of the puzzle.

Triangle puzzle worksheet

Building with Shapes

After building the 2D shapes themselves, it’s fun for students to build with shapes, as well!  This is important because it helps them to see the relationship between different shapes and sizes.

My Shape Lion Activity

I have created a resource where students can build fun pictures of an owl, lion, or train and then count the different shapes that they used!  This resource is available as a free download – just fill out the form below and I will send it straight to your inbox!

Even More 2D Shape Activities

The shape fun doesn’t have to stop there!  As students learn more about 2D shapes, it’s important for them to apply the knowledge they have to even more activities.  I love to create opportunities for students to share what they’ve learned about shapes, and these final activities do just that.

These fun mini books are a great way to get students talking about shapes!  These shaped books are fun for young learners to create and share with family and friends.  There’s just something about mini books that grabs their attention and gets them excited to show off what they’ve created!

2D shape mini books

2D Shapes Hats

If you’re looking for more ways to get your students talking about shapes, try 2D shape hats!  These are definitely a conversation starter when students wear them throughout the school day and also when they wear them home. Students will have fun identifying the shapes to attach to the hat, tracing the 2D shape and name, and coloring the shape.  They will wear their hats with pride after the work they put into them!

15 Fun, Hands-On Activities for Learning About 2D and 3D Shapes

A selection of fun, hands-on math activities for learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

When we think of early mathematical learning, we typically think firstly of numbers. But there is a whole other world of mathematics to enjoy and explore and that is the world of shapes! This post includes fifteen ideas for learning about 2D and 3D shapes (and their properties) in fun and ‘hands on’ ways!

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

15 Fun, Hands-On Activities for Learning About 2D and 3D shapes

Ideas for Learning About 2-Dimensional Shapes

Between the ages of two and four years, children typically begin to learn the names of simple 2D shapes incidentally; generally learning about circles, squares and triangles to begin with. We see them in picture books, on TV shows and in every day life (does anyone else’s toddler insist on their sandwiches being cut into a certain shape?) In their first years of school children will build on this knowledge, learning about rectangles, ovals, hexagons, pentagons and octagons, just to name a few.

1. Head Off On a Shape Hunt

A great way to kick start learning about shapes (whether it be at school or home) is with a ‘shape hunt’ – exploring and identifying shapes in our environment and everyday life. You can go on a shape hunt around your house, backyard, classroom or neighbourhood. Older children can take a checklist or paper to record their findings on, while younger children will enjoy discussing what you see as you go. Photographing the shapes you find is another great idea, with the photos being perfect for compiling into your very own shape book.

2. Popstick Play

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Popsticks and matchsticks are such versatile learning materials. They make a great resource for creating 2D shapes.

3. Self Correcting Popstick Puzzle

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Take the above activity one step further and make a self correcting puzzle by using the one colour for each shape, writing the name of the shape on each popstick and including the number of sides/corners. This makes a great busy bag .

4. Pipe Cleaner Creations

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Pipe cleaners provide a great workout for finger muscles. They can be bent and twisted to create a variety of 2D shapes. As a variation, make the shapes larger by using one pipe cleaner for each side of the shape.

5. Playdough Fun

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Playdough is also a useful tool for exploring shapes. Adding a set of geometric cookie cutters ( like this one ) to playdough play is a super easy way to add shapes to your day.

6. Shape Collages

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Kindergarten and school aged children will have lots of fun creating pictures with shapes. I created these two as example,s using a variety of shapes cut from textured papers and buttons.

7. Pretty Pattern Blocks

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Pattern blocks are one of my favourite classroom materials. Not only are children learning about 2D shapes when they play with them, but also other mathematical concepts such as symmetry, tessellation, pattern, sorting, counting and so much more. This activity could either be left unstructured for the children to make their own pictures, patterns and shapes, or you can use pattern block activity cards as a guide.

8. Sing About Shapes

Here’s a cute little song to help preschoolers learn 2D shapes. It works best with a group of children, with everyone holding a shape (sing to the tune of If You’re Happy and You Know It).

If you’re holding a square stand up! If you’re holding a square stand up! If you’re holding a square, if you’re holding a square If you’re holding a square stand up. Repeat with other shapes

Fun Ideas for Learning About 3-Dimensional Shapes

9. Fantastic Feely Bags

When I’m introducing the topic of shapes to my class, I always start with a ‘feely bag’. The idea being that the children feel the shapes in the bag without looking, trying to identify each shape using only their sense of touch. We discuss – How does it feel? Does it have pointy corners? Does it feel round? Once the children are familiar with names of the shapes, it’s fun to guess the shape they’re holding before revealing it!

10. Wonderful Wooden Blocks

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Math Learning Activities

Generally speaking in the first year of school you could expect your child to learn the shapes pictured above; rectangular prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, cube and sphere. 3D wooden blocks are a great resource for talking about the features of 3D shapes (and the 2D shapes they are made up of).

11. Test It: Stack, Roll or Slide?

As children learn 3D shapes, it’s fun to explore how they move and interact with each other. Set up a simple ramp and test each shape to see if it rolls down the hill or slides? Next, test each shape to see if it can be stacked easily on top of another shape. Explore your child’s understanding of why a shape does (or does not) roll, slide or stack.

12. 3D Playdough Shapes

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Math Learning Activities

Add matchsticks to playdough and invite children to create 2D and 3D shapes.

13. 3D Shape Models

Moulding 3D Shapes from playdough or kinetic sand is a fun, hands-on challenge.

14. Nifty Nets

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Math Learning Activities

School aged children can begin to explore the concept of ‘nets’. A net is a 3D shape flattened out. These plastic polydrons are a fantastic tool to teach this concept. Making your own die cube is a great place to start! (Once again we see 3D shapes in our everyday life). Here’s a link to a free die template printable from Teachers Pay Teachers.

15. 3D Shape Rhyme

Finally here’s a simple 3D shape rhyme to help children connect the name of the shape to real life objects.

3D Shapes are fat not flat A cone is like a party hat A sphere is a bouncy ball A prism is a building tall A cylinder is like a can of pop A cube is like the dice you drop 3D shapes are here and there 3D shapes are everywhere!

What are your favourite activity ideas for learning about 2D and 3D shapes?

When it comes time to teach 2D shapes in the classroom, I often run short on ideas, or I feel like I just continue doing the same thing year after year. I mean, how many ways can one introduce, create, and describe a square… am I right?! So, to help get out of that 2D shape rut, I have some ideas to share with you!

Create Something Fun

One thing I like to do with students is have them create something fun out of 2D shapes. This allows students to study different types of shapes, analyze and describe the shape’s attributes, and create a fun project!

{Click HERE for Shape Frankenstein}

Shape Frankenstein: 1st Step

The first thing I have students do is cut out all of their pieces. This gives students the chance to study each shape separately before joining together. Students write the name of the 2D shape. Then students count the vertices and the sides. Students record all of this onto their recording sheet .

shape frankenstein math activity halloween 1

Shape Frankenstein: 2nd Step

After recording all of the 2D shapes and their attributes, students assemble their Frankenstein. This Shape Frankenstein makes for the perfect Halloween display!

Shape Frankenstein: Alternate Step

If you want to skip the cutting and gluing altogether, this printable option may be the perfect activity for you! Students are still analyzing and describing 2D shapes, they are just doing so as they color!

2D Shape Anchor Chart

One thing I like to create with the students is a 2D shape anchor chart. We discuss each shape, its name, number of sides, and number of vertices as I add them to the chart. This is on display throughout the shape unit so that students know how to spell and identify each of the 2D shapes.

No Prep Shape Activity

It’s time to open up those teacher cabinets and see what you have stored up! I am always trying to use those random objects I’ve had stored for years and years. For this activity, I found popsicle sticks and foam stickers. Students create 2 quadrilaterals but any shape with sides would work! To create their shapes, students glued down the popsicle sticks. Then they used the stickers to represent and count the shape’s vertices. After creating their shapes, students wrote sentences to describe the shape’s attributes.

Best part? You don’t have to create, print, or prep anything in advance? Hands-on and no-prep? Yes, please!

Free printable 3D shapes worksheets for Grade 2 math practice - Identifying three-dimension shapes

Start practice on Second Grade here

What are 3d shapes definition and examples.

A 3D shape is a shape that has three dimensions: length, width, and height . Unlike flat 2D shapes with only two dimensions (length and width), 3D shapes have thickness and can be viewed from different angles.

Some common examples of 3D shapes you can find in Mathskills4kids.com are:

  • Cube : A cube is a shape that has six square faces that are all the same size. A cube has eight vertices (corners) and twelve edges (sides).
  • Sphere : A sphere is a shape that has no faces, vertices, or edges . It is perfectly round and has the same distance from its center to any point on its surface.
  • Cone : A cone is a shape that has one circular face and one vertex. It narrows from the base to the point.
  • Cylinder : A cylinder is a shape that has two circular faces that are parallel and congruent. It has no vertices and two edges that are curved.
  • Pyramid : A pyramid is a shape that has one polygonal face (usually a square or a triangle) as the base and triangular faces that meet at one vertex. The number of faces, vertices, and edges depends on the shape of the base.
  • Prism : A prism is a shape that has two polygonal faces (usually rectangles or triangles) that are parallel and congruent as the bases and rectangular faces that connect them. The number of faces, vertices, and edges depends on the shape of the bases.

How to identify 3D shapes from different perspectives

One of the challenges of learning about 3D shapes is that they can look different depending on how you view them. For example, a cube can look like a square or a hexagon from certain angles. A cylinder can look like a circle or a rectangle from certain angles.

However, our free printable 3D shapes worksheets for Grade 2 math practice have been designed with simple tips and clues to help you easily identify 3D shapes from different perspectives . Tips to pay attention to in shapes include:

  • The number of faces you can see
  • The shape of the faces you can see
  • The number of vertices you can see
  • The number of edges you can see
  • The orientation of the shape (whether it is upright or tilted)

For example:

  • If you see one circular face and a pointy vertex, you are looking at a cone.
  • If you see two circular faces and two curved edges, you are looking at a cylinder.
  • If you see one square face and four triangular faces that meet at one vertex, you are looking at a square pyramid.
  • If you see two triangular and three rectangular faces, you are looking at a triangular prism.

Fun activities with 3D Shapes: Sorting, building, and puzzles

Learning about 3D shapes can be fun and hands-on with activities that will engage your students and challenge their thinking. You can use manipulatives like wooden blocks, plastic shapes, or clay to help your students explore and create 3D shapes.

Here are some ideas and fun activities with 3D shapes :

Shapes and Patterns for Grade 2

Definition, Examples, Properties, Types and Quiz

Has Your Kid Forgotten the Basics of Math

Table of Contents

What is shape.

A shape or figure is a graphic depiction of an object’s outside surface, including its exterior boundary.

In this world, everything has a shape and a form. From a slice of a pizza which is triangular in shape, to the planets which are the sphere in shape.

Learning shapes aid kids in developing skills in reading, math, and science as well as assisting them in classifying and organizing visual information; thus it is vital that kids receive proper guidance in understanding shapes.

What are the Different Types of Shapes?

A variety of categories can be used to group shapes, but broadly shapes can be divided into two categories:

1. Open Shapes [Infographic]

Open shapes are composed of line or curve segments that do not meet and are not continuous. A prime example of an open shape is a semicircle.

Open Shapes

2. Closed Shapes [Infographic]

Closed shapes can be traced continuously. In the same location, they both begin and end. A closed shape would be a triangle.

Closed Shapes

Each form is also categorized according to the dimensions it has. The two primary categories of shapes are discussed in the grade 2 syllabus

1. Two-dimensional (2D) shapes [Infographic]

These shapes only have only two dimensions—length and breadth. For example – Square.

Two-dimensional (2D) shapes

2. Three-dimensional (3D) shapes [Infographic]

Shapes that are three-dimensional have length, breadth, and height.

 For example – cuboid.

How to Identify Different Types of Shapes

Geometrical shapes have a big part to play in the math curriculum, but they are intimidating and difficult for students.

When identifying shapes, students should focus on two characteristics: the shape’s number of sides and the length of its sides. For example a figure having three sides can be identified as a triangle.

How to Identify Different Types of Shapes

How to Identify Basic Shapes

The four basic shapes are Triangle, Rectangle, Square, and Circle.

1. Triangle [Infographic]

An object with three vertices and three sides is called a triangle. The angles of the triangle are formed by the connection of the three sides end to end at a point and these three angles sum up to 180 degrees.

Triangle

2. Rectangle [Infographic]

An example of a quadrant with equal and parallel opposite sides is a rectangle. The rectangle is a two-dimensional figure which has four sides and four 90-degree angles.

rectangle

3. Square [Infographic]

A figure called a square has four equal-length sides and four equal-size angles. All four angles in a square are at 90 degrees or straight, even the diagonals are equally divided at a right angle.

square

4. Circle [Infographic]

A circle is a spherical shape without boundaries or edges. A circle is a two-dimensional, closed curve.

circle

5. Curved Line [Infographic]

A curved line is one that is wavy and unbalanced. We know that the straight line has no curvature at all. Consequently, if a line has a curvature of more than 0, we can say that it is curved. It’s also important to remember that a curved line never follows a straight path.

Curved Line

6. Straight Line

A continuous, one-dimensional object with no breadth is a straight line. A straight line has no curves and can be vertical, horizontal, or inclined.

It will always have a 180-degree angle.

Based on their alignment, straight lines can be divided into the following groups

1. Standing/Vertical [Infographic]

Vertical lines are those that are drawn vertically, parallel to the y-axis or perpendicular to the x-axis. They intersect the x-axis at an angle of 90° or 270° and the y-axis at an angle of 0° or 180°.

vertical lines

2. Horizontal [Infographic]

Horizontal lines are those that are parallel to the x-axis or perpendicular to the y-axis when they are drawn horizontally. They intersect the x-axis at an angle of 0° or 180° and the y-axis at an angle of 90° or 270°.

shapes activity grade 2

3. Slanting or Oblique lines [Infographic]

Slanting or oblique lines are defined as those that are drawn in a slanted position or at an angle different than 0°, 90°, 180°, 270°, or 360° with the horizontal or vertical lines.

What are Solid Shapes?

Solid shapes are simply a collection of solids with three dimensions—height, width, and length. 3D shapes are another term for solid shapes. These substantial forms take up space and are ubiquitous in daily life. We utilize, touch, and sense them everyday in our lives such as rubik’s cube, book, ice-cream etc. Let’s explore and understand different types of solid shapes.

1. Cube [Infographic]

The solid three-dimensional shape known as a cube has six square faces, eight vertices, and twelve edges. The most prevalent example in real life is rubik’s cube.

cube

Properties of Cube

  • It has square-shaped faces on both sides.
  • The proportions of all the faces or sides are the same.
  • The cube’s plane angles are at a right angle.
  • Every face touches the other four faces.
  • Three faces and three edges are met by each of the vertices.
  • In opposition to one another, the edges run parallel.

2. Cuboid [Infographic]

A cuboid has six rectangular faces, eight vertices, and twelve edges. A cuboid is also known as a rectangular prism.

The cuboid shape is a closed, three-dimensional object, with length, width and height that is surrounded by planar areas of rectangles called rectangular faces.

cuboid

Properties of a Cuboid

  • The cuboid has rectangular-shaped sides.
  • It has parallel edges on opposite sides.
  • The angles created at its vertices are all 90 degrees.

3. Sphere [Infographic]

The sphere is a three-dimensional solid with a volume and surface area that is spherical in shape geometrically. The sphere’s points are evenly spaced apart from the centre, much like a circle.

sphere

Properties of a Sphere

  • A sphere is symmetrical in nature.
  • The average curvature of a sphere is static.
  • A sphere has a set diameter and fixed breadth.
  • There is only a curved area of its surface.
  • It has no vertices or edges.
  • The distance between each point on the surface and the centre is always the same.

4. Cone [Infographic]

A cone is a three-dimensional mathematical object with an upward-facing flat and curved surface. The Greek word “konos,” which denotes a peak or a wedge, is the source of the English word “cone.” The apex is the pointy end, while the base is the level area.

shapes activity grade 2

Properties of a Cone

  • It features a single spherical face.
  • IIt has zero edges.
  • It has one vertex (corner).

5. Cylinder [Infographic]

Two parallel, identical bases joined by a curved surface form the three-dimensional solid object known as a cylinder. The bases look like round discs. A line that passes through or joins the centers of two circular bases forms the axis of a cylinder shape. Height, or “h,” stands for the perpendicular distance, which separates the two bases.

The distance between the centres of the outside limits of the two circular bases is known as the cylinder’s radius, or “r.”

cylinder

Properties of a Cylinder

  • A cylinder has two identical flat faces and one curved surface(one rectangle and two circles)
  • The two circular bases fit together perfectly.
  • Its size is determined by the base’s radius and the curved surface’s height.
  • A cylinder lacks a vertex (corner), in contrast to a cone, cube, or cuboid. The cylinder’s base, which can be round or elliptical, is the same as its top.

Roll and Sliding Shape

Rolling objects that move by turning over. Objects with curved surfaces roll such as sphere, cylinder and cone.

rolling objects

Sliding objects are the objects that move smoothly along a plane surface such as cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone.
