First, the project covers an area of approximately 17 square miles, which is equivalent to 43 square kilometers. This is one of the most massive lands set aside for a renewable energy project by a country.
The size of the geographical area occupied by the project is an indication of China’s commitment. It shows that the nation has decided to invest in renewable energy to benefit the current and future generations.
Secondly, Tengger Desert Solar Park has about 25 individual solar power plants. This makes make it one of the largest solar farms in the world. Each of these plants contributes to the overall generating capacity of the whole project.
Thirdly, the Park has a generating capacity of 1.5 GW. It is the largest amount of power produced by a single solar project in any part of the world. The energy has played a significant role in increasing China’s share of renewable energy. It has also helped turn the nation into the largest producer of solar energy.
Currently, China surpasses countries such as the U.S and Germany in the total amount of solar power generated each year.
The size of the project is proof that China is slowly shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy. It is also an indication that solar power is only going to continue to grow in popularity in the coming decades.
2. China’s Solar Highway
China’s solar highway is a project located in Jinan, Shandong province. It is proof that the nation is leading the way in the shift to clean energy.
The solar highway is precisely what the name suggests. The road is made up of solar panels instead of asphalt, which is the widely used construction material. The modules are spread throughout a one-kilometer stretch.
The design helps the road to harvest solar energy, something that was unimaginable a few years ago.
The solar panels used differs from the standard rooftop modules since they are made of a complex polymer. The surface of the road is covered with a transparent concrete that is stronger than asphalt. This is meant to protect the panels from the weight of the passing vehicles.
It is estimated that the solar highway can generate up to 1GWh in a year. The capacity is enough to power the neighboring homes.
It can also be used to provide power to electrical equipment on the highway, such as street lights and cameras.
The number of electric cars is growing at a significant rate. China hopes that the project will be expanded in the future. This will allow it to generate enough power for use by charging stations that will be located near the highway.
The solar highway project is an indication that the world is seeking new ways of harnessing renewable energy.
China is likely to build similar roads in the future, something that will inspire more nations to do the same. The result will be an increase in the share of renewable energy, which will reduce the demand for fossil fuels .

3. Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System
The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is currently the largest solar thermal plant in the world. The facility is located in Mojave Desert, California, and has a generating capacity of 392 MW. The project consists of three different plants, each with a tower that is surrounded by panels.
The project stands out because it taps into another potential of solar energy that is yet to be exploited fully. The world is accustomed to generating electricity through solar panels. The power is then used for various purposes in the domestic, commercial, and industrial sectors.
However, the Ivanpah solar thermal project adopts a different mechanism.
Instead of the panels generating electricity, they concentrate the energy from the sun and direct it to the towers. The concentrated solar energy is then used to heat water within the towers, thereby turning it into steam.
The steam is responsible for driving turbines that are connected to generators , and which are responsible for generating electricity.
The project stands out among other thermal projects since the panels are computer-controlled. This ensures that the solar modules direct the heat from the sun into towers located higher above the ground for most of the day.
The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is proof of the many potentials of solar energy. It shows that people from across the world are finding new ways of harnessing power from the sun.
The practice is proof that the sun will become a vital source of energy in the coming years.

4. Murchison Renewable Hydrogen Project
The Murchison Renewable Energy Project was unveiled in 2019 by Hydrogen Renewables Australia in partnership with Siemens and will be located in Kalbarri. Despite being in the early stages, the project is proof that renewables are the future of energy.
What makes the project interesting is how it seeks to provide renewable energy. The facility will use an advanced electrolyzer technology that will convert solar and wind energy into renewable hydrogen.
Solar and wind energy will provide the necessary power to electrolyzers, which will be responsible for extracting hydrogen from water. The combined solar and wind farm that will be powering the facility will have a capacity of 5 GW. This means that the facility will be able to produce large amounts of renewable hydrogen each day.
The Murchison Renewable Energy Project aims to provide renewable hydrogen for the local and international markets. Once it is complete, the facility will be supplying hydrogen units that will be used for various purposes.
For instance, it will provide fuel for transportation and the production of electricity . It will also be used to give heat for use in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
The nature of the hydrogen project is proof that there will be increased use of renewable energy in the future. Nations across the world will no longer rely on fossil fuels to produce hydrogen whose demand continues to grow.
Furthermore, the project sets the way for other countries to start exporting solar and wind energy as renewable hydrogen. This will increase the use of clean energy across the world, even by those that are yet to embrace renewables.
5. Hornsdale Power Reserve
Found in South Australia, the Hornsdale Power Reserve is a great achievement and qualifies as one of the influential renewable energy projects. It is proof that renewables can replace fossil fuels in the future.
So, what is the Hornsdale Power Reserve, and why is it an exciting renewable energy project?
It is an energy storage system located next to the Hornsdale Wind Farm and is also connected to the grid. The project was carried out by Tesla. Its goal was to stabilize the power in the network, something that it has already achieved.
The project is made up of the largest lithium-ion batteries in the world. Currently, the storage batteries provide 100 MW emergency power backup.
There are plans to expand it in the future, which means that it will be able to provide more electricity.
The Hornsdale Power Reserve project is unique for one main reason. It provides the means of storing large amounts of renewable energy for later use, which is a great achievement. But why is this important?
Renewables sources such as solar and wind are efficient for limited hours of the day. This is one of the main factors that have hindered the growth of renewable energy. Thus, being able to store large amounts of power generated when renewable systems are operating at their fullest is crucial.
Since the Hornsdale project has already provided a solution, it is certain that renewables will continue to grow in popularity. This is because it will be possible and easy for solar and wind power plants to store energy in large quantities.
Countries will, therefore, not be required to use fossil fuels when renewable systems are not able to generate enough power.

6. Hydropanel Project in Atauro Island
Clean drinking water remains to be a scarce commodity in many parts of the world, especially in developing countries. But, renewable energy is providing a solution, as can be seen through the hydropanel project on Atauro Island, near East Timor.
The project is a demonstration of the possible benefits of solar energy. It reveals how communities that find it difficult to access non-bottled clean drinking water can address the issue.
The hydropanel plant in the Island now provides more than 10,000 liters of drinking water each month.
But what are hydropanels, and how do they work?
Hydropanels are a type of advanced solar panels that can harness solar energy and also extract water from the air. They are designed in a way that there is a standard solar module in the middle flanked by two hydropanels.
Hydropanels can generate heat and, at the same time, absorb water vapor from the atmosphere using solar energy. The absorbed moisture is led to a reservoir tank within the hydropanel where it is mineralized.
From the reservoir, the water is ready for drinking. It is then directed to taps or even a refrigerator located within a house or office building.
Each hydropanel can produce up to ten liters of water per day. Therefore, installing more hydropanels means that more safe and clean drinking water is produced within a short period.
The hydropanel project is a sign that the world will embrace renewable energy more, heading into the future.
Similar projects across the globe will offer a solution to the drinking water crisis faced by many communities.
This will then contribute to a sustainable future for all, which is the focus of sustainable development goals .

Stay up to date:, energy transition, sustainable energy innovation is struggling in a 'valley of death'.
Much has already been achieved in our fight against climate change, both in mitigation and adaptation. Awareness, policy, business, technology and innovation are all improving. However, the impact of climate change is gaining momentum much faster than expected, while the shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energy is slow. The International Energy Agency projects that fossil fuels will dominate way beyond 2040. Indeed, by 2040, it forecasts that such fuels will still meet 74% of primary energy demand, down from 81% in 2016.
While energy transformation is happening, increasing demand growth is limiting its net impact. In general, technological innovation faces many challenges until it is widely recognized and replicated. Photovoltaic (PV) systems, for example, took more than three decades to move from space research to broad commercial application. We simply do not have another three decades to wait for nascent technologies to mature. Substantial acceleration in sustainable energy innovation is needed now.
The technical and financial "valleys of death", shown above, are major hurdles to sustainable energy innovation. Through both my work in the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Decarbonizing Energy and in a personal capacity, I have engaged many entrepreneurs and innovators who are incubating revolutionary or disruptive technologies, including a low-cost way to separate CO2 from combustion gases.
Time and again, these innovators struggle to find funding for applied research, pilot and demonstration plants or market development. Meaningful access to supportive institutions or potential investors proves equally challenging. Those who reach out to such bodies often find themselves stonewalled by gatekeepers before even reaching the stage of serious examination. There are a multitude of promising technologies waiting to be leveraged. With the proper support and enabling environments needed to flourish, their impact on transforming our energy system could be massive.
Six bold ideas to accelerate sustainable energy innovation
Our fight against climate change will suffer huge losses if these technologies fail to materialize. This is a battle we cannot afford to lose. To break the stalemate and dramatically accelerate sustainable energy innovation, we have to think and act way beyond conventional wisdom. These challenges - such as climate change, solving inner-city pollution and ensuring global energy security - are unconventional. Following my participation with other experts in the World Economic Forum project " Partnering to Accelerate Sustainable Energy Innovation ", and after extensive discussions among key stakeholders in the energy innovation ecosystem, we have established "six bold ideas".
Establish an independent international sustainable energy innovation accelerator fund to finance energy technology projects, blending public and private sources of capital
Develop instruments for public-private co-investment at the national or regional level to support and finance deep-tech energy innovations, reduce risks and improve the efficacy of available public and private funding. If properly designed, such instruments would not only stimulate more private money into breakthrough energy projects, but would also significantly improve the success rate and impact of public R&D grants
Mainstream energy innovation through strategic public procurement, using the power of public procurement to accelerate development and commercialization by providing first markets for innovative energy technologies and solutions
Create institutions for energy innovation that act as a single voice for public support in the field of energy innovation; bundle responsibilities as the main public funding authority; and overlook and steer the overall sustainable energy innovation process
Co-define energy technology roadmaps through public-private collaboration to align global policy and industrial innovation efforts. This would also create a credible road to scale for technology areas of high potential that are currently advancing slowly
Ensure government R&D spending is s uper-transparent to make the public R&D funding process more efficient and increase the transparency of opportunities and volume of public funding schemes for entrepreneurs and investors

Accelerating sustainable energy innovation, this forgotten element could be the key to our green energy future. here’s why, china is a renewable energy champion. but it’s time for a new approach, making ideas a reality.
These bold ideas are recommendations from the World Economic Forum's Accelerating Sustainable Energy Innovation whitepaper. They are intended to spark discussion and action among serious stakeholders. Their implementation may face challenges. For example, the creation of a national institute for energy innovation could meet with serious resistance from existing institutions if their vested interests were to be jeopardized. The establishment of an international fund to finance energy technology will face the traditional barriers of diversified national interests.
But the time to act is now, particularly following the Paris Agreement, which showed that the majority of nations are willing to come together and work towards a shared narrative. Countries need to think bold, engage public and private actors, and establish policies and frameworks that support an innovation culture.
In closing, let me share Japan’s bold challenge with you. Her position as a de facto world leader of climate initiatives was destroyed following the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident, which drove most of her nuclear fleet out of service. Nuclear power had been the main source of CO2-free energy for Japan, known for its serious energy scarcity.
Faced with this sudden and unprecedented challenge, in 2013 Japan became the first ever nation to advocate a comprehensive hydrogen strategy, with close collaboration between the public and private sectors. Hydrogen is regarded as an important CO2-free energy source, as well as an energy carrier and storage solution. The launch of the Hydrogen Council in 2017 by leading multinational companies may well have been stimulated by the Japanese initiative. One bold step leads to another. Let the positive cycle begin.

There are many things that will affect the ability of solar cells to absorb power during the day. One of these things is dust that settles on the panel, blocking it. This project creates a system that can automatically remove that dust, making the system more efficient.
Fresh Water Production System
This is a project that’s interesting for those looking at survival mechanisms. You can create a system to desalinate sea water to create fresh drinking water. Powered by solar energy, they can be used anywhere.
Solar Air Heater Box
“This is another project that’s a good one for beginners” says Jane Mulligan, a tech writer from Essay roo and Paper Fellows. “You’ll be able to try it yourself and see how the system works.” A DIY solar air heater box can be put together with minimal components, and is simple to do.
Solar Cockroach Vibrobot
You have likely seen toys that use simple vibrators to move around on the floor, much like an insect. You can try putting one of these together yourself. Creating one in the shape of a cockroach makes your very own version of this toy.
Solar Night Light
Here’s another good starter project. This asks you to create a night light that lights up a single bulb with stored solar energy at night. It’s easy to put together so you can understand solar energy.
Solar Compass With OLED Display
This is something you may not have realized you can create with solar energy. These compasses use that energy, rather than magnetic energy, to point you in the right direction. You’ll want to try creating this solar energy circuit yourself.
Solar Powered Irrigation System
You’ll see these used on a large scale in agricultural settings, to water fields. You can create a much smaller scale one, for example to water a flower box. To go one further, the system can be set up to water the box depending on the soil’s water content.
Wrapping Up Solar Energy Projects For Students
Now, these are just a few ideas to get you started. In fact, there are many other ways you can put together your own solar energy project to use in your studies.
So, if you’re ready to dabble into solar energy, look into these great project ideas. Good luck and have fun, engineering students!

Five Renewable Energy Projects You Should Keep an Eye On in 2023
How to Face the New Invaders of the Energy Utilities Sector
Get our new guide for energy suppliers, energy service companies and utility providers who want to stay competitive and upsell their existing customers through new innovative offerings.
Global renewable energy (RE) journeys have been set in stone since the 19th century. Norway's Renewable Energy innovation , for instance, began in the 1800s, when the prominent engineers of that time decided to leverage their rivers' powerful currents to provide sustainable, clean electricity. And it worked. After hydropower had set the pace, wind, solar, and other renewables, such as biomass, followed suit. Now, the world is on the verge of an energy revolution that humankind has never witnessed before.
While every nation has distinct RE stories to tell, two things reconcile most of these countries' journeys, particularly the European countries: the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russo-Ukraine conflict.
Renewable Energy During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The global energy charts demonstrating RE growth reveal how many spikes the world experienced in 2020. Multiple reports also claim that wind and solar energies attained their greatest heights in the RE market, overtaking hydropower and earning impressive projections from experts.
Renewable Energy During the Russo-Ukraine Conflict
Most of the EU member countries get their oil and gas supplies from Russia. In 2019, the EU imported about 40% of its natural gas and about half of its coal from Russia .
With many of these countries obligated to cut ties with Russia, it became imperative that they look elsewhere for their energy supplies, a majority of whom decided to do away with fossil fuels and look inwards for their sustenance. This transition means a big deal to the growth of RE as European governments polished their energy policies to expand the attention given to RE. Germany's Renewable Energy , for example, took a transition leap after the invasion because of increased self-reliance on renewables.
These two key events have successfully birthed hundreds of remarkable RE projects worldwide, many of which have been completed, some ongoing, and the rest forthcoming. Below are some of the most noteworthy RE projects to watch out for.
Top Renewable Energy Projects to Watch Out For in 2023
We are starting off 2023 with completed RE projects in 2022 already running and satisfying the needs of consumers all over Europe and the rest of the world, it's only expected that energy consumers, as well as energy players, be on the lookout for forthcoming projects:
1. Solaris’ Protevs
Solar photovoltaic panels generate electricity by converting light rays from the sun into electrical energy. However, the ever-shifting direction of sunlight usually impairs the output of solar panels.
To correct this, SolarisFloat, a Portuguese renewable energy company, plans to develop solar farms, called Protevs, across Europe that can track the sun’s movement.
In November 2022, Solaris installed its pilot Protevs project, Oostvoornse lake, in the Netherlands . The project comprised 139 modules of floating PV solar panels with a total installed peak capacity of 50.7 kW-p.
The sun-tracking feature in the solar panels makes them rotate in the direction where there is the most solar concentration, yielding a 40% increase in energy production compared to the normal floating panels.
To properly utilise this innovation, SolarisFloat aims to install seven islands of Protevs across Europe to generate 2 GW of electricity annually.
2. The EU’s REGACE agrivoltaic project
When solar PV panels are installed on the rooftop of greenhouses, they prevent plants from receiving sufficient sunlight for growth. In addition, when installed on farmlands, they take up space that should otherwise be allocated to more plants.
Earlier this year, the EU awarded €5.3 million to the REGACE Consortium to help combat this challenge. The project—which is being developed by the Israeli company, Trisolar —is aimed at devising innovative ways to help greenhouse farmers embrace renewable energy without putting their plants’ lives at risk.
As a by-benefit, the solution helps solar PV panels installed on greenhouses increase their efficiency. In a way, it creates a symbiotic relationship between plants and solar panels.
The panels help control the amount of sunlight that gets to the plants so that they absorb the ample amount of light. In return, the panels use excess sunlight to generate 10% more electricity than regular solar PV panels.
3. Repsol’s Delta II wind project
In May 2021, Repsol , a Spanish renewable energy company, began constructing its Delta II wind energy project in select provinces in Spain.
The project, which is expected to be completed and operational in 2023, comprises six wind farms: Santa Cruz I, II, & III, Amp, and San Isidro I & II.
When fully operational, Delta II will have a total capacity of 860 MW, supplying nearly 800,000 homes across Spain.
What’s more, the project is estimated to prevent the emission of over 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 annually.
4. OX2’s 1.4 GW offshore wind farm
OX2 , a Swedish RE company, has begun the development of a 1.4 GW offshore wind farm about 30 kilometres northwest of Kashinen, off the coast of Finland.
The wind farm, whose full operation is to begin in about four years, will have 100 turbines supplying about 6 TWh of electricity.
5. Iberdrola’s 1.2 GW solar project
Spanish energy giant Iberdrola, in partnership with Prosolia , another Spanish solar PV manufacturer, will begin the construction of a 1.2 GW solar plant in 2023.
The solar plant, which will be situated in Santiago de Cacem, some 200 kilometres south of Lisbon, is tipped to be the largest solar project in Europe and the fifth largest globally. It is expected to become fully operational by 2025. By then, it will have enough capacity to power around 430,000 households.
On the surface, the above projects demonstrate how much growth Europe is witnessing in its transition to green energy. However, from another angle, they signal how much renewable energy innovations promote intersectionality and vice versa.
The agrivoltaic project, for instance, shows the mutual benefits that renewable energy and agriculture offer each other. Also, floating solar panels, which are now being widely adopted, reduce the need for land in the construction of solar plants.
Finally, renewable energy and energy players are two sides of the same coin. The massive RE capacities to be initialised or completed in 2023 indicate the prospective need for more energy players such as prosumers , ESCos, DSOs, etc. This means energy players will have to seek smart solutions to help them keep up with the incoming weight of RE that is about to hit Europe.

Princeton engineering, flexible geothermal power approach combines clean energy with a built-in ‘battery’.

Many consider geothermal to be an around-the-clock clean energy resource, but according to a Princeton-led study in collaboration with startup Fervo Energy, operating new geothermal plants flexibly could provide the best value for the grid.
By leveraging the inherent energy storage properties of an emerging technology known as enhanced geothermal, the research team found that flexible geothermal power combined with cost declines in drilling technology could lead to over 100 gigawatts’ worth of geothermal projects in the western U.S. — a capacity greater than that of the existing U.S. nuclear fleet. Such an innovation would transform geothermal energy from its niche status on the grid today into a major component of a decarbonized future. The researchers published their analysis January 15 in Nature Energy.
“People generally think of geothermal as this always-on, baseload energy source, but we’ve shown that there’s a lot of extra value to be had in operating these plants in a different way,” said research leader Jesse Jenkins , assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment .
Since the early 20 th century, people have been harnessing the earth’s heat to produce electricity, but these conventional geothermal power plants require a specific set of conditions: hot, permeable rocks close to the earth’s surface, and some sort of fluid to transport heat up from underground. These requirements have limited traditional geothermal energy to only a handful of favorable locations in the western United States and Hawaii — places with naturally occurring geysers, volcanoes, and hot springs. Consequently, geothermal plants generated only 0.4% of the total electricity in the U.S. in 2022.
Yet advances in drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies have unlocked the enhanced geothermal approach, which removes the need for permeable rocks and greatly expands access to the heat that already exists far beneath our feet.
In the approach, engineers dig two or more boreholes into impermeable rock that extend thousands of feet below the earth’s surface, then drill similar distances horizontally, and subsequently create fracture networks in the horizontal sections to connect those holes deep underground. Afterward, they inject a fluid into one borehole, which heats up as it travels through the fractures. That heated fluid can be pulled up through the other wells and subsequently used to generate electricity.
“Enhanced geothermal is much less geographically dependent than conventional geothermal, which is really only possible in a small number of ideal spots,” said Wilson Ricks, first author of the study and a graduate student in mechanical and aerospace engineering. “With enhanced geothermal, you can open up wide swathes of the country — wherever you can dig down and find hot rocks close to the earth’s surface.”
Adding value through flexibility
Efforts to develop and scale enhanced geothermal energy have historically focused on lowering the costs associated with drilling and other equipment. The U.S. Department of Energy unveiled an Enhanced Geothermal Shot in 2022, for example, which calls for a 90% cost reduction of enhanced geothermal technologies by 2035.
But in their research, the team found an alternate avenue to make geothermal power more market-competitive: flexibility.
By operating enhanced geothermal power plants flexibly — using the inherent energy storage capabilities offered by enhanced geothermal reservoirs to generate more or less energy as needed — the team found that the value of geothermal energy dramatically increased because it could complement and compensate for intermittent energy sources such as solar and wind.
“Wind and solar are now the cheapest sources of clean energy, but their downfall is their variability and weather dependency,” said Jenkins. “You can earn a lot of additional revenue if you can find a way to shift your clean energy generation to times without wind and solar.”
Fortunately for enhanced geothermal, it can do just that.
As Ricks explained, the impermeable rock required for enhanced geothermal also functions as a self-contained underground reservoir for heated fluid that acts like a giant energy storage system.
Analogous to how a conventional battery can be charged and discharged to store and release energy, operators can change how fast they inject and extract fluid into the enhanced geothermal system to shift between energy production and energy storage. To “charge” the system, engineers would simply inject more fluid underground than they pull out, filling up the reservoir with heated fluid and building up pressure. And when clean energy is most needed, this heated, pressurized fluid can be discharged to the earth’s surface to generate electricity.
“Because enhanced geothermal comes with its own variation of energy storage, you’re able to shift how you operate the plant to generate as much power as possible at the times when it’s most valuable to the grid,” said Ricks. “That added flexibility allows enhanced geothermal to avoid generating energy when wind and solar are active and electricity prices are extremely low, something many alternative energy sources struggle to do.”
Flexibility in practice
Adding flexible operations to enhanced geothermal made the technology more valuable and increased its optimal installed capacity in every scenario, even without further cost declines in drilling technologies. In fact, scenarios that assumed flexible operations were similarly impactful to the deployment of geothermal as scenarios that only assumed lower drilling costs. Combining flexible operations and cost declines, the team found that geothermal energy could add up to over a third of the installed clean energy capacity in the western U.S.
Moreover, adding flexibility to an otherwise baseload geothermal plant would only require a few changes at the aboveground facility. Engineers would have to overbuild the capacity of the power station to accommodate for the times when the plant is discharging as much heated fluid to the surface as possible, and they would need infrastructure to store additional fluid for the “charging” periods, when more fluid is being injected than produced.
But below ground, the baseload and flexible systems would look nearly identical.
“That’s one of the real advantages here: the core technology — in terms of the wells and the subsurface engineering — doesn’t change. Once you’ve built the wells, the subsurface system is inherently flexible,” said co-author Jack Norbeck, chief technology officer and co-founder of Fervo Energy, a startup focused on developing enhanced geothermal resources.
In field testing at its commercial Project Red plant in Nevada, Fervo Energy has demonstrated energy storage capabilities exceeding five days. When translating that field data into physical models, Norbeck said there were scenarios in which the system could achieve over 10 days of energy storage.
“When you consider that many people are currently quantifying long-duration energy storage as anything over eight to ten hours, that’s very exciting to be already demonstrating something above five days,” Norbeck said.
While initial field tests have validated many projections, Norbeck said work is still needed to demonstrate the robustness of flexible operations over many charge/discharge cycles and to characterize certain system properties like roundtrip efficiency. He added that flexible geothermal power will also require innovations to contract structures, since purchasing agreements for geothermal energy often assume that plants will operate as a baseload energy source.
With support from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy (ARPA-E) , Fervo Energy and Princeton’s ZERO Lab will continue their collaboration to explore these advanced geothermal techniques in the field and in computer models, answering key questions about the potential role of geothermal energy, as well as the necessary steps for achieving that role.
“In earlier work , we’ve looked at the value of adding flexible operations to a single, first-of-its-kind enhanced geothermal plant, and in this work, we’ve answered the broader question of how flexible geothermal might fit into a future decarbonized energy system,” Ricks said. “The next step is to look at the intermediate timescale to understand how enhanced geothermal can get from the nascent technology it is today to become the clean energy heavy hitter we’ve shown it can be.”
The paper, “ The role of flexible geothermal power in decarbonized electricity systems ,” was published January 15 in Nature Energy. In addition to Jenkins, Ricks, and Norbeck, co-authors include Katharine Voller and Gerame Galban of Fervo Energy. The work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science Small Business Innovation Research program, ARPA-E, and Princeton University’s Zero-carbon Technology Consortium.

"It’s all about matching the energy of a brand": A day in the life of interior designer Kirsty Vance
K irsty Vance is associate director of interior design at experience design agency I-AM . Her role sees her working across hospitality, food and drink and retail banking on projects with brands including Hedinn Bar & Kitchen in Iceland, KFC and the Sidemen Hotel restaurant, Sides.
I caught up with her recently to find out why there is no such thing as a typical day in her role, how she overcomes the demon that is imposter syndrome and why elements such as sound play an important role in a brand experience.
For more in this series, see all our Day in the life interviews.
Tell me about a typical day in your role
A typical day? That’s almost impossible to answer. For starters, hybrid working means I’m either beginning the day at home or running to catch the train to the I-AM studio. Each has a very different energy, but I appreciate the change of pace.
Generally, working from home is a good time to get my head down and focus; maybe it’s preparing material for a workshop, building a 3D model for concept visuals or getting my head around technical details for a drawing pack. Occasionally, it might be one of those unfortunate days where you find yourself on back-to-back Zoom calls and haven’t made the slightest dent in your to-do list.
The I-AM studio is slap-bang in the heart of Shoreditch, and I always find it funny when I’m being carried on the wave of creatives that descend the steps out of Shoreditch High Street station, psyching ourselves up for the day's challenges. Studio days are the perfect time for project team catch-ups, you’ll often see a gaggle of designers, directors and account managers drifting from desk to desk as teams review work, discuss ideas and, almost certainly, create something outstanding together.
The wonderful thing about being a designer at I-AM is we work across the entire design process, which in itself brings incredible variety to every day depending on what stage you’re at with a project. I have three projects on the go right now. One is at site supervision stage which means I’m keeping a close eye on emails, making sure clients, contractors and suppliers are aligned. The second, visualising a concept for a well-loved high street restaurant has me deep in the intricacies of 3D modelling to bring to life the collective ideas of the project team. And finally, a super-fun project that taps into creator culture, bringing it to life in a distinctive hotel experience. Our digital team is diligently working on animating visuals to seamlessly merge the realms of the physical and digital aspects of the brand.
I've come to realise – there's simply no such thing as a typical day. It’s what gets me up in the morning.
Which project are you most proud of and why?
This is like asking me to choose my favourite child, which I imagine would be difficult. But if I really have to, it would be a toss-up. The hotel project I mentioned has been a fascinating journey into creator culture, and translating this into a physical hospitality experience. We were given an incredible brief which meant we could really stretch our creative thinking beyond the ordinary realms of 'what’s possible' and build something that is fun at its’ core. 'Parody' is one of our driving themes; it’s given us so much joy to build humour into a physical experience. It’s top secret though, and I’ve already said too much!
The second would be the Hedinn Bar & Kitchen for our wonderful clients Center Hotels in Iceland. The concept was in direct response to the site; a disused steel factory in Reykjavik, which used to build the engines for the ships in the nearby marina. I still remember the first time I set foot on site, a cavernous concrete chamber with no windows, but rain and snow still finding its way inside.
We conceived the idea of opposites and extremes, specifically man versus nature, drawing inspiration from archive footage of the engineering and craft that once happened within those four walls against the incredible beauty of Iceland’s natural landscape. When the windows were installed, they revealed views of the Akrafall & Esja mountains, of course all volcanic land. This led to the injection of organic forms, seemingly pushing through the concrete floor to become the bar and open grill areas. This was reflected above as radiating chainmail drapes and flows across the ceiling.
The design seemed to come naturally, and resulted in a genuinely breath-taking dining experience. Finally, after the tumultuous disruption of the global pandemic, I had the chance to visit last year. The sheer joy of setting foot in that beautiful space, having been kept at arm's length for so long, was such a special moment.
Tell me about a tricky work-related challenge and how you approached it
Honestly, imposter syndrome.
The amount of times my subconscious has said to me, 'why on earth does this client want to hear your airy fairy ideas?' I know so many others struggle with this same thought. However, what I have learned is that if I truly believe in the work this brings a reassuring sense of confidence, and confidence does not equal arrogance. Passion will always come across in your work, and clients can see that. And what could be more valuable to a client than knowing their agency is approaching their project with a surge of expert energy?
What was your early career like?
It was a bit of an eye-opener. I’d come from a pure interior design course at university and went into a multidisciplinary studio so was working alongside graphic designers for the first time. It was a fascinating insight into creating brand worlds that seems second nature to me now.
What makes a space feel on-brand? And is it possible to ‘over-brand’ a space?
It’s all about matching the energy of a brand, and where you want to take your customers while they’re in your space. There’s a delicate balance at play when creating a branded experience, subtlety is often more powerful than bombarding customers with branded messaging.
For instance, how do the materials feel, what sound does the floor make when you walk over it, when and how do you interact with other people in the space, is it bright or dark? These more intimate interactions imprint to trigger an emotional response, and therefore tell a more memorable story.
Why are customer journeys important and what makes a good/bad customer journey?
The quality of a customer experience is ultimately determined by its weakest link. By deconstructing the journey into stages, we can identify potential pitfalls and uncover opportunities for enhancement. This doesn’t always mean designing for efficiency- moments of friction can also leave a positive impression. You must also consider where the experience sits within the overall ecosystem of the brand, which more often means aligning with a digital journey- is there a synchronicity?
We always test these journeys against customer missions, going through step-by-step to ensure we are not only fulfilling those missions, but where possible enhancing them.
What tools do you use in your work?
At I-AM, we have a suite of in-house tools integral to our preliminary project stages. Our Customer Journey workshop is where we explore ideas for each stage of the journey. It’s a methodical exploration of ideas spanning each stage of the journey. This entails a meticulous examination of existing customer experiences or the strategic creation of bespoke solutions.
On the brand and storytelling side, our Brand Key workshop allows us to help define the positioning and expression of a brand, and ensures we’re aligned with the client on the vision. We also explore Brand Archetypes, applying human characteristics to a brand immediately shaping both tone of voice and behaviour of the brand.
Crucially, our methodology prioritises an in-depth understanding of users through the creation of detailed customer profiles. This deep understanding of customer needs, wants, attitudes, and aspirations stands as the foundations to designing truly 'People Inspired Experiences'. This strategic framework ensures we deliver impactful solutions aligned with the core essence of our clients and their audiences.
What do you do when you get stuck for ideas?
I scour the internet, and not necessarily for visual inspiration. Some of the best ideas can come from articles, stories and historic references. I’ve found myself down some weird rabbit holes reading about ancient folklore searching for inspiration, and most of the time it works!
What's your dream project?
This is a tough one, there’s so many experiences out there that are ripe for an overhaul. (GP surgeries spring to mind.) As a company we discussed getting involved in more community-based projects. It’s something we explored in our 2022 Life-Led trends report around the themes of Communitas and Symbiosis. It posed a critical question: How can we create more spaces that truly matter to people, spaces that are relevant and meaningful for the community, and that have a genuinely positive effect on collective wellbeing. This is definitely something I’d love to explore more.
What career advice would you give your younger self?
Keep asking questions and sharing ideas- discussions lead to some pretty interesting places!
