Mass Effect Legendary Edition Asteroid x57 (Bring Down The Sky)

This is a detailed walkthrough of Bring Down the Sky Asteroid X57 in Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

' src=

Mass Effect Legendary Edition quest ‘bring down the sky’ revolves around the x57 Asteroid which is a metallic asteroid that was supposed to be mined for its resources to build an orbital port facility for Terra Nova. Initially, revolving around the Borr’s orbit, it was derailed to get into the Terra Nova’s orbit by using fusion torches. However, something does not seem right, as all the communications have been lost from the engineering team. Three fusion torches have reignited and the asteroid is approaching Terra Nova at an increasing speed. All you have is four hours to save the planet and stop the asteroid from crashing into it.

Asteroid X57  Bring Down The Sky For Mass Effect Walkthrough

Mission Goal X57 Asteroid

Your goal is to shut the fusion torches to stop the acceleration of the x57 asteroid. The asteroid is in the Asguard system of the Exodus Cluster of Mass Effect. A good way to easily get through this mission is to have a team that is strong in combat.

Upon arrival, you will find a dead body. By the looks of it, the victim, G Mendel, has been beaten before getting shot. Get inside the small station present there and check the station log. This is the first clue that will give you some insights. You will also find x2 Medi-Gel so do stock that up for the later part of this quest.

How to Disable the First Fusion Torch on X57 Asteroid?

Turret Attack

Your next stop is the Fusion torch that is visible. Approach with caution, and there you will see 5 turrets surrounding the fusion torch with one turret in the opposite direction of the others. Their build is such that they go back underground. So you need to be in mid-range proximity for these turrets to reveal themselves. Only then you can shoot them down. We recommend that you take down that turret that is solo in the opposite direction first so that you only have to look out for attacks from one direction after that. They are relatively easy to take down if you are close enough to them.

Once you take them down, you will be able to get into the entrance console that is between these turrets. Upon entering, you will come face to face with the Batarian Troopers. They will initially release their three pet creatures on you which are relatively easy to kill. There will be 7 Batarian troopers that you will need to kill in this room. Once dead, enter the room that is on your far left end. Inside the room on your right-hand wall, you will find a storage locker that you will need to override either manually or by using 20 Omni Gel. This will give you some vital loot.

Disable Torch

Now head on to the upper level of the building . There on your left, you will find the room where you can disable the torch from. Simply interact with the fusion torch and you can choose to manually override it or use 25 Omni gel to do so . There is also some loot at the entrance of the room which you might want to get. This will initiate a cut scene with Kate Bowman from the other end of the communicator. She is an engineer that was assigned to the x57 Asteroid and the one who first contacted you.

Once done, go down the building and you will be met with Simon Atwell who is the chief engineer. He will tell you the consequences of the X57 Asteroid crashing and warn you about the live blasting caps around the next fusion torch. He will give you the X57: Missing Engineers assignment.

Missiing Engineers

Disabling the Second Fusion Torch

Get into your vehicle after the dialogue and head on to the transmission tower first. Repair the tower to get the locations of the engineers for the X57: Missing Engineers assignment. Now you can head onto the next Fusion torch. On your way there you will come across another aid station that you can check for more insight. You’ll also find another dead engineer there.

Once you approach the second fusion tower, you will get a warning that will make you abandon the vehicle and approach on foot . There will be three turrets that you can take out using your vehicle. Once you abandon your vehicle and cross the line of yellow torches, you will be ambushed by some enemies. Use a long-range weapon to take these enemies down before advancing further. It will be useful to have a shield active at this point too. We suggest you do not move much while taking them down and be stationary . Once they are dead, advance further. They will keep spawning in short periods of time.

How to get past the live blasting caps on Asteroid x57?

Proximity Detection

You will see a line of live mining caps that will start beeping as soon as you are in close proximity to them. There will a proximity detection bar on the bottom right corner of the screen that will start going higher the closer you get. If the bar is full, the mine will blast and you will die. The best path to take is slightly from the left when you are directly in front of the side of the console like shown in the picture below:

Mine Path

Takedown the attacking enemies first and then use the two crates on your slight right as an anchor point. You should be able to get those without detonating any mines. Once past these, there will be two other crates right in front of them. Use them as your second anchor point and go straight towards them. You can also use them as your cover from the enemies. From there, entering the console should be simple. Simply go straight to the door and you will be able to disarm the blasting caps.

Once inside the building, Rocket Drones and Batarian Troopers together will ambush you and there will be around 7 of these. Once you take them down, just like the first collect the loot from the first level. Then head on to the second level and disable the second fusion torch. The only difference is that here you will find a few enemies on the second level too. At this point, Kate will contact you again informing you that the enemies might blow up the whole facility. Kate gets disrupted at this point and a cut scene plays where she is caught by the Batarians and her crew member is killed. After this, head down back to your vehicle and reach your final destination to the third Fusion torch.

Final Fusion Torch of Asteroid x57 in Mass Effect

Override disbled mass effect asteroid x57

As you approach the third fusion torch, you will again be face to face with the 4 turrets guarding it . Take them down and enter the room . There you will come face to face with 7 other enemies and their pets . Take them down too, collect the loot from the base level, and head on to the upper level. Here when you will try to disable the fusion torch, you will not be able to. So you will have to try it again until you override it successfully. Once down, you will come face to face with Charn and his men. Here you will have a decision to make.

You will have two options, to end it peacefully or to attack. If you go about peacefully, you will offer Charn to take down his boss, Balak, and make him the one in command. He will agree to that and go away peacefully. If you do not do this peacefully, you will not only have to face Churn, but he will also call for more troopers and you will be outnumbered.

You will then head to the main facility where you will encounter drowns and troopers from Balak. You will meet them at the grenade box and aid station. Once at the facility, you will greet a heavy battle just like the rest of the two times but with more enemies than before.

Balak Choices in Mass Effect

Balak Choices mass effect asteroid x57

When you go upstairs and come face to face with Balak you will realize that he has hostages. You will have two choices – Attack him or let him go. We have an in-depth guide explaining the consequences of both these options that you can read here – Balak Choice Guide.

You have now saved Nova Terra and Simon will come to reward you for the quest. This is when you will complete the quest. So that is all for our guide on Mass Effect Legendary Edition: Asteroid X57 ( Bring Down the Sky). Mass Effect: Bring Down The Sky Walkthrough

Completing the Bring Down the Sky mission in Mass Effect will earn you an achievement/trophy, but what should you do with Balak at the end?

Bring Down the Sky was one of the DLC packs for Mass Effect but it is automatically included in the base game as part of the Legendary Edition. This content sees Shepard becoming more acquainted with the Batarians on Asteroid X57. Like the main story missions, the location for this assignment will be flagged on the Galaxy map.

RELATED: Mass Effect Legendary Edition: Achievement/Trophy Guide

You'll have to disable three fusion torches on Asteroid X57 in order to avoid a collision with a nearby human planet called Terra. However, at the end of this assignment, you'll be faced with a moral dilemma that echoes in the following games in the series.

Updated August 31, 2021: We've updated this guide with new formatting to allow for easier readability. We've also added in more information, such as the morality points you will earn from each decision outcome, and links to additional helpful guides.

Bring Down the Sky Walkthrough

Mass Effect Asteroid X57 location on Gaslaxy Map

Go to your Galaxy Map and head to the Exodus Clus ter , Asgard System , then select Asteroid X57 . A cutscene will play as you land with someone contacting you to ask for your help in disabling the fusion torches.

When you land on the planet, immediately turn around and head towards the building shown on your mini-map (not your overall map) and examine the body you find there (this is for the Missing Engineers assignment).

Next, head towards the closest Fusion Torch and as you get near, you'll notice a number of turrets will start firing at you. These turrets only become uncovered/vulnerable to attack when you are close enough, so take them down carefully before heading into the base.

Mass Effect Asteroid X57 approaching turrets in Mako

Inside, you'll be faced with some Batarian mercenaries and their varren. Take them all out, grab the loot from the room at the rear of the building, and then head upstairs to disable the first fusion torch. This will lead to another conversation with Kate, the person who contacted you when you first arrived.

Mass Effect Bring Down the Sky assigment, disabling the fusion torch

As you leave the base, you'll meet with Simon the Chief Engineer. He'll talk to you more about the dire situation, will warn you that the second Fusion Torch is surrounded by live blasting caps, and also ask you to find the missing engineers for the X57: Missing Engineers assignment.

Head towards the next Fusion Torch , you'll get another communication from Kate on the way. Take out the turrets while staying clear of the blasting caps, then get out of your Mako and approach on foot. Even when on foot, these blasting caps will go off, so you still need to be careful when passing them. A sensor will appear on the screen when you are too close, so just mitigate this and make your way to the base. If you set one of the explosives off, it will be instant death.

Mass Effect Bring Down the Sky assigment, avoiding the blasting caps

There will be some enemies to take care of just outside the base's entrance, watch out for the Batarian Rocket Soldiers in particular, and then you can disarm the blasting caps at the panel near the door . Once this is done, head inside.

There are more Batarians to take out and a few drones this time too. Get rid of them all, grab everything you can loot, and then head upstairs to disable the Fusion Torch. Kate will contact you again and you'll hear her get captured by the Batarian. A short cutscene will then play.

Mass Effect Bring Down the Sky assigment, Kate watching the Batarian shoot her brother

Head towards the final Fusion Torch and take out the turrets before heading inside. Kill the Batarians and Varren, grab your loot, and then head upstairs to disable the torch. On your way back down, you'll be met with a group of Batarians — don't fire at them immediately as you can talk your way out of this if you want to.

You can Charm or Intimidate Charn into leaving, or you can face him and his men in battle. For the record, you will be fighting more than the Batarians you see as Charn will call on more support and it can be a tough fight, but the experience points are worthwhile. Whatever you do, you'll end up with a pass to the main base.

Mass Effect Bring Down the Sky assigment, charming Charn

Head to the main facility in the north and take out the many turrets there, some of which are on rails, before heading into the building. If the grenade box and aid station weren't enough clues for you, you're about to head into a hefty battle with Balak's men and drones.

Go upstairs when you're ready and take out all the enemies, after which, a cutscene will begin with Balak where he threatens to kill the hostages if you don't let him leave. You will be faced with two choices:

Mass Effect Bring Down the Sky assigment, Balak decision

Let Balak Leave and Save the Hostages

Attack balak and sacrifice the hostages.

After the battle, Simon will appear and tell you that you saved Terra, as well as being dismayed to hear that either Balak escaped or the hostages were killed. Simon will offer you a reward (some decent armor), or you can use Charm or Intimidate to get his omni-tool instead (which we recommend, if you can) . If the hostages are still alive, you can head over and free them to meet Kate in person. You can also hand in the Missing Engineers assignment if you chose to complete it.

Mass Effect Bring Down the Sky assigment, asking Simon for his Omni tool

Completing Bring Down the Sky will unlock the Colonial Savior achievement/trophy.

X57: Missing Engineers  is an Assignment   in Mass Effect . X57: Missing Engineers  is about Hymes, Mendel, and Montoya, three engineers that have gone missing on the surface of the asteroid and need to be found.  Assignments  are secondary quests in Mass Effect , that are not mandatory to progress the game's story, but provide context and flavor by meeting interesting NPCs  of all kind of Races , granting additional experience, and letting the player visit extraordinary and unique planets.

X57: Missing Engineers Walkthrough

Once you talk to Simon Atwell , at the first fusion torch, you can ask him about the best way to find his missing people. He gives you a map reference for a broken transmitter tower nearby. Head there and once it's fixed, it will automatically updates your map with references to all three surveys

He was assigned to a survey station near to the main facility. You can read the station logs to learn that Montoya armed the defense drones, and decided to investigate the Batarian ships at the main facility. Once you finish reading the logs 2 Defense Drones  will attack. Once you deal with them, look around the shack to find footprints leading away, to the east you will find Montoya's body. Examining the body will tell you that he died by a single shot through his helmet, likely from a sniper, You can loot his body

Hymes can be found in the station around the south east corner of the map. The door is completely destroyed and she can be found inside. Her last recording can be found on the station logs, and tells that she tried to hide from the Batarians . They attached an explosive to the door, and she was killed in the blast.

He was assigned to the station closest to the drop zone, you can find his body just outside the shack, with a technician's kit near. By examining his body, you learn that he was badly beaten before receiving a gunshot to the back of the head, suggesting he surrendered to the Batarians  but was ruthlessly executed. When you examine the survey stations logs, you learn about another engineer called Slajs, who should be on his way to the station.

Although Slajs doesn't count as one of the missing Engineers, and is not required to complete the Assignment , you can find it just for the extra loot. Explore the nearby ridge, to find a completely destroyed M29 Grizzly and Slajs beside it. You can find a technician kit near his dead body. Upon examination, you learn he escaped his burning vehicle, only to be shot down.

Once you are done, you need to report back to Simon Atwell  to receive the Experience points reward. He won't be around until you finish the main Assignment X57: Bring down the Sky . You will see that the Assignment  change to completed once you find the 3rd engineer, but you don't earn any Experience points until you report back to Simon Atwell

How to unlock X57: Missing Engineers

You can obtain  X57: Missing Engineers  in 2 different ways:

  • If you find one of the dead engineers while wandering off on the asteroid, without being given the  Assignment  will automatically add it your journal
  • You can also earn it by talking to  Simon Atwell , at the first fusion torch.

16. Mass Effect Bring Down the Sky DLC

Bring down the sky dlc.

Mass Effect's first DLC pack Bring Down the Sky adds in 3 new assignments and one new achievement which is unlocked for completing the DLC campaign.

This pack can be started at any point after Shepard gains control of the Normandy and is available until you start the mission M8.0 : Ilos: Find the Conduit, after which point you are locked into the endgame. There is no difficulty requirement for completing this DLC campaign so you can avoid playing the assignments on Hardcore or Insanity if you wish, however this particular DLC pack is helpful for the various Ally achievements.

To start the DLC, head to the Asgard system in the Exodus Cluster and land on Asteroid X57. You will then get a cut scene explaining that an asteroid is heading towards the planet Terra Nova and will hit it within four hours.

X57 map

B1: X57: Bring Down the Sky

When you land you will be instructed to shut down three fusion torches in order to stop the asteroid. Before you do this head to the Transmission Tower just NW of the first torch in order to update the map with locations of three survey stations needed for the B3: X57: Missing Engineers assignment.

From the landing point turn left and drive directly N up the rocky incline then turn right towards the E when you reach the smoother path; you will see one of the torches in the distance. Follow the path E then when you reach a dip turn left and go up the steeper incline to the north. Climb up this peak, leave the Mako and repair the rotating transmitter tower, either with 50 omni-gel or a 7 input decryption minigame.

First Torch

Drive towards the first torch SE of the transmitter. As you get close six turrets emerge and will start firing at you. These turrets only reveal themselves when you are relatively close to them which can make things tricky, especially on the harder difficulties. You can either destroy them one at a time using the Mako, retreat, heal, save and repeat, fight them on foot or ignore them and rush inside (they will still be there when you leave though).

When inside you will have to deal with a group of Batarians and charging Varren that can swarm you, with snipers who can overheat your weapons (destroy the fuel dump at the back if enemies are near it). Stay near the door entrance to thin their numbers then proceed inside to deal with the rest.

Head up the stairs on the left and disable the torch, either with 25 omni-gel or another decryption minigame. You will then be contacted by Kate Bowman, after this get any loot you wish and head downstairs. As you go to leave you will get a short cutscene and meet Simon Atwell. He will give you the assignment B2: X57: Avoid the Blasting Caps as well as B3: X57: Missing Engineers if you haven't already picked it up.

B2: X57: Avoid the Blasting Caps

Second torch.

When you are outside and back in the Mako head towards the second torch; drive through the valley entrance to the west of the building then continue N then NE, spotting the torch ahead.

When you reach the ring of lights (don't drive inside!) carefully take out the three turrets, make a manual save then leave the Mako to proceed on foot to avoid setting off the blasting caps. You will notice a proximity meter on the bottom right of your screen, be cautious here as if the meter fills completely it is game over. You have to navigate carefully past the blasting caps to the front door of the second torch.

One way to get through this section is to first drive east up the slopes around the southern edge of perimeter then turn left and park the Mako at the base of the steep incline at the eastern edge, then walk up to the back of the building towards the west.

Once past the caps you will be greeted by four Batarians, two of which are armed with rockets. Deal with them, turn the blasting caps off using the console outside the entrance to complete this particular assignment, then enter the building.

Inside you will face six Batarians (one of which is an engineer on the top floor to the left) and several rocket drones near the back of the room as well as on the top floor. Use the nearby raised crate platform for cover and deploy tactics that suits your play style and character best, however targeting the engineer first helps as he overheats your weapons leaving you vulnerable.

Once the room is clear head upstairs and disable the second torch. You will then receive another message from Kate followed by a short cutscene, after this head outside and get back in the Mako (use the map to find out where you parked it).

Before proceeding to the last torch you can drive south up the mountain to find Radio shack X57 (the path is indicated by the yellow dotted arrow on the above map).

Third Torch

From the second torch drive NW through the valley incline, leading straight to the third torch ahead towards the west. There are no blasting caps this time and you just have to deal with the six turrets that appear when you approach them like the first torch. Inside the building you will find a dozen or so Batarians and Varren. Apply the same tactics as before then head upstairs once they are all dead to disable the last torch.

Go downstairs to be greeted by Charn, who has orders to kill you but you can use the left hand dialogue choices along with a charm/intimidate option to persuade him to leave. If you choose to fight be prepared for a tough battle on the harder difficulties as you will face six Varren , 11 Batarians and Charn, although you only face around six enemies in one go.

Either way after the conclusion of this encounter you will receive a pass card and location on the map for the Main Facility where the main boss Balak is located. Before proceeding there you can first find the missing engineers in order to complete this assignment for the ally achievements and gain more XP, otherwise skip to the main objective B1 described below.

B3: X57: Missing Engineers

Driving directions are indicated by the dotted pink lines in the map shown above.

From the third torch drive N through the valley towards the atmospheric glow. As you approach the map boundary go up the smoother incline on the left then continue NW, spotting the building in the distance in the area below. Exit the Mako and examine the footprints next to the shack; if you open the log inside the building you will be attacked by three flying defense drones.

Drive directly east with the map boundary to your left and as you go over the first hill you will spot the first engineer Montoya on the bottom ( 1/3 ). You can now either drive all the way back to the initial landing point of the Mako or return to the Normandy then land again.

From the Mako's landing position go SW up the smoother incline then turn right to the W, where you will then see a small building and transmitters in a small rock depression near the map boundary. Examine Mendel near the shack entrance ( 2/3 ).

Drive back to the initial landing point to the NE then follow the path east towards the first torch. When you reach the flat plateau curve right and drive towards the SE direction, going up the hills ahead. Continue down into the valley below, avoiding the map boundary on the right, then turn left and drive up the rocky path towards the NE, eventually leading to the last shack and transmitters at the top near the map edge. Head inside and examine Hymes ( 3/3 ), completing the assignment.

Return now to the third torch, retracing the route back to the SW, curving right up the incline to the west, continue towards the first torch, then follow the rest of the directions given earlier.

Main Facility

From the third torch go N through the valley towards the atmospheric glow then curve to the right and drive up the incline to the NE, following the smooth path.

Continue ESE then turn left and spot the facility to the NE. As you approach you will find six turrets outside the front door laid out in a semi circle, three of which are on tracks. To save yourself the frustration on Hardcore and Insanity difficulties just race inside the bunker; any other difficulty just keep moving and you shouldn't have much trouble taking out the turrets.

Inside, go left up the stairs and enter the large main atrium to face at least a dozen or so Batarians (more on harder difficulties), including two or more engineers and drones scattered across three floor levels. There is plenty of cover around but it's recommended to take out the engineers and drones first.

Once you have eliminated everything, head over to the opposite side of the room and enter a small portacabin on the first level (it's door will automatically open), revealing one more Batarian. Kill him then Balak will show up. After a conversation with Balak explaining his reasons behind the attack, you are left with two choices:

a) Let him go

This is certainly advisable on the higher difficulties but you will still face defence drones whilst disarming 3 devices dotted around the main room within 3 minutes. Go up the stairs, turn left and follow the walkway around about half way and disarm the first charge inside the doorway to your right using a quick 5-input decryption minigame ( 1/3 ).

Next go left and return back to the previous staircase, go down, then continue on the left. Go down the stairs in front of you on the right onto the lower level and disarm the charge on the left next to the wall ( 2/3 ).

Go back up the previous short flight of stairs, turn left and enter the doorway. Go up the stairs, follow the corridor all the way round to the left and disarm the last charge in the far left hand corner of the room ( 3/3 ).

b) Fight and kill him

If you chose to fight then you will have to engage bodyguards, rocket drones, Varren and Balak. The Varren normally attack first directly in front of you, so focus on them, then go back to the other side of the room (first by going up the stairs then walking along the upper floor to use a higher vantage point) and destroy the drones. Then deal with the bodyguards and Balak last. Completing either choice will unlock

You completed the Bring Down the Sky mission.

Colonial Savior

Simon Atwell will then speak with you; tell him what happened and choose a reward, which includes an excellent omni-tool. If you also saved the hostages then open the door next to you to release them, engaging in conversation with Kate Bowman. The DLC is now complete, so leave the building using the north entrance then return back to the Normandy.

Avoid the Blasting Caps

This page of IGN's Mass Effect wiki guide is all about the Avoid the Blasting Caps Side Quest during the Bring Down the Sky DLC, and covers how to complete it without getting Shepard or the Mako blown to smithereens.

How to Complete Avoid the Blasting Caps

Avoid the Blasting Caps Header.png

As you leave your first Fusion Torch, you'll meet Simon Atwell, who'll eventually reveal that the middle Fusion Torch is guarded by proximity mines. Your task is to navigate through them to the Blasting Cap Controls next to the building so you can disable the mines and complete the Side Quest.

You can easily reach the second Fusion Torch by driving North up the valley from the first Fusion Torch. the minefield will be helpfully marked by a ring of yellow beacons, but you'll need to take out the surrounding turrets first. If you're not playing the Legendary Edition, make sure the killing shot is done on foot so that you don't suffer the Mako's half XP penalty.

Bring Down the Sky slice13.png

To make things that much more difficult, there are four Batarians at the entrance of the building, one of which is a Rocket Trooper. You’ll want to take them out, especially on harder difficulties, but their position is sunk into the ground and has ample cover. A good spot to snipe them is up the South bank where one of the Heavy Turrets were. Park the Mako safely, approach the base to draw the Batarians out, then use the Mako as cover so you can pop out and shoot the Rocket Trooper, then the other three.

Approaching the mines in the Mako is treacherous because it's simply too big and unwieldy to navigate through them without getting blown up, so you’ll have to go on foot. The mines are marked on your minimap as orange Xs, and you can use the meter next to the minimap to get a warning if you’re too close.

There are two good spots to approach from as shown via the map below:

Blasting Cap Map V2.png

  • West-South-West where the Mako marker is. You’ll slip by two pairs of mines as you go up a hill, which you can use as cover to take out the Batarians at the entrance to the building.
  • On the East side where the blue Squad marker is. While you'll have to drive around the mines first, you can walk up the hill behind the building directly to the Batarians.

Once you make it past the mines and to the front door, use the Blasting Cap Controls to Disarm the Explosives and complete the Assignment. Now you can head indoors and continue with the main X57: Bring Down the Sky mission!

Simon Atwell

  • Edit source
  • View history

Simon Atwell , the chief engineer on Asteroid X57 , was originally in charge of bringing the asteroid across the Asgard system to Terra Nova , where he lives with his family and grandchildren in Aronas. Simon has a fairly open mind dealing with alien races: he knows batarians aren't all genocidal madmen, he likes and respects quarian workers, having hired quarian specialists in the past for mining jobs, and he despises Terra Firma 's humanocentric values.

When the asteroid is attacked by batarian extremists, Simon manages to escape and hide on X57's surface, eavesdropping on the batarians. He later sneaks into one of the fusion torch stations, presumably to try and disable the torch, but only succeeds in accidentally shooting Commander Shepard . Luckily, Shepard's shields absorb the hit.

Simon is then able to provide Shepard with background information on the situation, painting a dire picture of what happens if X57 hits Terra Nova. He knows little about enemy numbers, only that they're enough to give the Commander a challenge, and he has overheard the batarians fearfully taking orders from one they call Balak . Since asteroid drops are banned under Citadel Conventions , Simon thinks the batarians on X57 must be working without sanction from their government.

Simon's team rigged blasting caps around one of the fusion torches for excavating the asteroid. When the batarians arrived he improvised turning them into proximity-based explosives, and managed to snag some of the invaders by suprise. He can warn Shepard about this or answer their question about it following their encounter with the caps.

Simon in X57's main facility

Simon is also concerned about three missing engineers and Kate Bowman . He witnessed the batarians' ruthlessness in action—breaking faceplates to expose hapless humans to vacuum and letting their varren eat victims alive—and he doesn't want such fates befalling his crew. He wants Shepard to look for them, though he understands if they're low on the Commander's priority list. He goes off to hide once Shepard learns what they could from him.

After Balak is dealt with, Simon reappears, having returned to the main facility to help. Shepard can justify the decision to kill or release Balak, and Simon explains that Shepard's actions have saved Terra Nova. He offers equipment as a reward. Shepard can pick from light, medium or heavy human armor , a rare set of quarian armor (left behind by Simon's former quarian colleagues) and an advanced omni-tool .

  • The voice actor for Simon, Brian Bloom, also provides the voice for Varric Tethras in Dragon Age II , as well as Leske , Dwyn , and Jerrik Dace in Dragon Age: Origins . He also voices Keiji Okuda in Mass Effect 2 .
  • One of the responses Shepard may give to Simon — "Two eyes, human. Four eyes, batarian." − may be an inverted reference to a similar quote from Animal Farm : "Four legs good, two legs bad."
  • When Simon asks Shepard to look out for one of his crews, Shepard may mention a "tired platitude about the needs of many versus few". This is likely a reference to a line uttered by the character Spock in the film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan .

I enabled the transmission tower, showed me the locations of all three survey stations on my map. There is a problem with Survey Station 1. The engineer C. Hymes, I found her body, played the logs on how she died.
