This is an awesome site
Very amazing site, & easy to use. Many thanks for making it available.
Thank you for this incredibly useful resource.
please provide the solutions (answer sheets) of the given worksheet exercises as well
How do students edit the worksheets, whether RTF or PDF? In these days of distance learning, my fellow teachers and I are looking for editable digital resources that kids could turn in… The homophones worksheets look great, but how would we see their answers?
I don’t recommend that students use those formats. Those are for printing and editing.
For online learning, I recommend that you use my online worksheets:
https://www.ereadingworksheets.com/e-reading-worksheets/online-reading-tests/
Or maybe my parts of speech app:
ereadingworksheets.com/parts-of-speech-app/
Best Wishes!
Check out my online learning resources:
Just wanted to thank you Mr. Morton for these excellent resources. It makes homeschooling so much easier. Take care.
Uhhhmmm, I asked for grade 8 worksheets and this is what I get! Seriously go for some higher order questions
Thanks for visiting!
Thanks a lot! Great activities!

I love this website. Do more
I love these!!! They’re helpful for all of my students no matter their level. What I have had trouble finding anywhere is a quiz on adjectives and adverbs that compare. I made my own of course, but just for thought, they are hard to come by even as worksheets!! 🙂 Thanks for all you do.
Mr. Morton,
I teach remedial grammar at a local university. I find that your work supports me in my instructional process to reach these students who may have not been “tuned in” during high school.
Thanks for the work you do and allowing us access to this—you are always referenced!
That means a lot to me. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Hi Mr. Morton Great worksheets but do you think you could put more lessons and answer sheets. If possible would you email me to talk.
I am working on it. There will be major content additions by the fall of next year.
This is great site and I wish there were more topics covered from grammar area. It has been a great help to me especially when I need the worksheet for subs or myself at times of urgency or hurry. Love this site and its materials. They perfectly match my ESL students’ abilities. Thanks.
Kudos. I’m sharing this with all my fellow homeschooling parents. I’d like to suggest a zip file holding the whole package for easy download. I haven’t found anything that isn’t very useful, especially the ppts, nicely done. Having the stories separate from the instruction (mostly) lets me exchange them for some tailored to my kids’ ages.
thanks again.
Thanks for helping to spread the word. Best wishes!
i got a c on my report card how can i improve
I suspect that you need to pay closer attention to your instructor, ask questions when you do not understand the material, and complete all of your assignments.
what a laugh cannot open any of the english worksheets
What sort of device are you using to browse?
OMG! !!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you very much I like this website actually I love it, it helped me a lot especially during my mid-year exam it had been an honor for me and now it is much easier to do the homework with my little sister, and that website had even helped my sister do her homework by herself with no help!!!!!!!!! I wonder if your worksheets have answer keys sorry if this question is lame. I just want to be certain with my answers and explanations to my daughter. Thanks !
I understand, and it’s certainly not lame. I’d like to get some up in this section during the next week or so.
Wonderful website! Thanks so much, it’s very helpful!

High School Grammar Worksheets and Activities
Looking for high school grammar worksheets that review common concepts? High school grammar practice can be engaging and analytical.
Grammar worksheets for high school can be part of your language arts activities, but when you move past the worksheet, students will see grammar in a new way. Plus, what you do with a worksheet can easily lead to meaningful h igh school grammar activities. Sometimes, I start with a worksheet and provide direct instruction, and then I move to more complex parts of studying language.
I think about grammar activities for high school this way: I don’t teach any other concept in my class only using a worksheet. Why would I approach grammar that way? When students and I discuss our language as we experience it in other parts of class (informational texts, speeches, literature, writing), students retain grammar lessons. We discuss grammatical concepts in context, work on student writing, and study the way humans use language. “Grammar” is more than a worksheet.
That’s not to say that I don’t use h igh school grammar worksheets. I do, just like I sometimes use a worksheet with literature or writing. In fact, you can download my free high school grammar worksheets and activities . Then, with a few modifications, you can turn any grammar worksheet into a higher order thinking activity. (I created this free set of activities so you could experience grammar with higher order thinking.)
Those two ideas, that grammar is more than a worksheet and that I can elevate student thinking with language, guide many of my grammar activities for high school. I typically ask students to show me what they understand and where they need support. I use a pre-test for valuable feedback. Then, students can focus on where they need practice.
Here are specific ideas for h igh school grammar activities .
Worksheet Creation: Student Guidelines
A quick grammar activity that fits into most lesson plans is to ask students to make grammar worksheets.* It reverses the role for students, and they experience the creation of language with grammar in mind. I did this with middle school students and did not have much luck. High school grammar worksheets that students created? That worked better.
By asking students to create, they must look at all angles concerning the grammatical concept. The adage, “Tell me, I’ll forget. Show me, I’ll remember. Involve me, I’ll understand” is true with grammar. Games and interactive grammar notebooks work too, but for a quick, any-time activity, asking students to create high school grammar worksheets works for students and teachers. Students practice, and teachers can see where students are still struggling in their grammar journey.
When I ask students to create, I have found that the fewer guidelines I provide, the better students perform.
If for instance, I give students a number for each part of speech or type of sentence to create, students struggle to meet the quota. They focus on the quota.
However, if I provide a general guideline such as students writing a variety of sentences, more times than not, students will create different types of sentences. Then as I circle the class, I can show students that with a few additions, they have created another type of sentence. The changes are subtle, but students see that those small additions (a subordinating conjunction, another subject and verb) have formed a compound-complex sentence.
The guidelines I do provide focus on giving students the power of creation. I encourage them to think of structure and the worksheet’s goal. I ask students what should be covered. This provides me with assessment; I learn what my next high school grammar practice should be.
Plus?! Student-created grammar worksheets for high school are often awesome. Engagement is high whenever students create the h igh school grammar activities.
Differentiation with High School Grammar Practice
Another (simple!) way to practice grammar with older students is to differentiate the practice. Not all students need to work on the same skills!
Normally with differentiation in my classroom, students work with grammar practice together. Group work allows me to differentiate easily. Students have control over choosing an area where they need practice. After students explain what they need to study or if you choose for them, decide what activities they’ll practice. If you’ve tried high school grammar practice in a variety of ways, a worksheet might help. Often, a worksheet clarifies any confusion, and students have direct and short practice. Plus, when students write, I ask them to consult the worksheet for extra emphasis.
For instance, let’s return to the sentence structure example. A set of students may need to work on making subjects and verbs and compound subjects and verbs for simple sentences. Another set would focus on punctuating a compound-complex sentence correctly. Another set would work on using both subordinating conjunctions and relative pronouns to begin dependent clauses.
Whatever students need, I can provide a quick worksheet to clarify. Not every student in class receives the same worksheet! Then we can return to more engaging grammar instruction.
Grammar Worksheets for High School: Problem Areas
Upper level language standards focus on difficult concepts where owning a strong foundation of grammar pays off. Often, grammar activities for high school students tie to student essays. If students have confusing sentences or other grammatical errors, you might find yourself teaching very specific areas.
Take parallelism as an example of a problem area. Sometimes, as students write more complex sentences, their elements are not yet parallel.
Parallelism is a powerful tool in writing and public speaking. Parallel structure can emphasize a point and provide transitions.
A lack of parallelism can be confusing though. Words, phrases, and clauses should be parallel in structure. Consider this sentence: We have papers to write, research to complete, and classes that need attended.
That sentence has a series with three ideas. The first two ideas are nouns with infinitives. The last idea is a noun followed by a dependent clause. The sentence should read: We have papers to write, research to complete, and classes to attend.
Before students make high school grammar worksheets, ask them to scaffold the material themselves: what knowledge is needed to understand parallelism? to correct that sentence? Students should understand phrases are different from clauses, that commas should separate items in a series, and that subjects and verbs make up clauses. All of those concepts can be divided amongst students to study. Allow older students to take part in the scaffolding decisions and to apply the grammar practice directly to their writing.
Finally, language standards (which is where we find our “grammar” concepts) ask students to connect grammar to writing. For example, high school students should use various types of phrases and clauses. Even if students can identity phrases and clauses and recite the definitions, they still are not meeting standards. Students must write phrases and clauses to honestly meet the standard.
Which. . . is the power of language. Students should understand and study grammar so that they can implement the concepts into their writing. They should also be able to look at informational texts, speeches, literature, and on to be sure that the creator is not deceiving them through the use of language. Presenting grammar to high school students this way can change the way they approach grammar lessons.
Overall, grammar activities for high school can include worksheets, but they can include so much more! When I see students needing more practice before moving onto the next step or when a concept is overwhelming students, asking students to what would help them often results in targeted and purposeful practice. The more students understand that grammar is the study of language and that study is diverse and purposeful, the more likely students will be involved in their lessons.
Finally, don’t be afraid to use grammar worksheets . They have straight-forward information, and older students appreciate no-nonsense approaches to lessons.
What successes have you found with grammar activities for high school? What specific grammatical concept? I’d love to read your success stories.
*I’m using “grammar worksheets” as a catch-all term. I’ve had success making flipping books, study guides, grammar sorts, manipulatives , and on.

- Comma Splices (Run-on Sentences)
A comma splice occurs when two independent clauses are joined only with a comma and no other conjunction. Remember that an independent clause is a group of words that can stand alone as a sentence. It is one of the most common errors in student writing. A comma splice is fairly easy to correct. The page and the primary worksheet contain easy ways to correct it.
- Fused Sentences (Run-on Sentences)
A fused sentence occurs when two independent clauses are joined with no punctuation whatsoever. The clauses are simply connected or "fused." Sometimes comma splices and fused sentences are called "run on sentences." We use the more descriptive terms, "comma splices" and "fused sentences."
- Sentence Fragments
A sentence fragment is a group of words that starts with a capital letter and ends with a period. This group of words, however, cannot stand alone as a sentence. A sentence fragment usually needs an idea to complete its meaning or the syntax needs to be changed.
Many native and non-native speakers of English alike do not understand the difference between using the word lie and using the word lay. This worksheet attempts to clarify the difference. Both lie and lay are verbs, meaning that they indicate an action of some sort. However, the verb lie and the verb lay are two absolutely different words, like rhinoceros and apple. They are not variants of the same word.
- Apostrophe Errors
A common error in our writing is using the apostrophe (or NOT using it) incorrectly when trying to show that something belongs to someone. The most common manifestation of this error is the use of its, it's, and its' (This last form does not exist in standard written English.)
Who or Whom
People are so mystified (confused) about the use of who and whom that some of us are tempted to throw our hands in the air and say, “it just doesn’t matter.” But it does matter. Those who know (and not just English teachers), judge those who misuse it. Not using who and whom correctly can cost you, not just in school, but also in life. Who is the subject form and whom is the object form.
- Nominalizations
In the words of Joseph Williams, “A noun derived from a verb or adjective has a technical name: nominalization." This worksheet examines briefly the nature of nominalizations and offers concrete suggestions for rewriting them.
- Agreement of Pronoun with Antecedent
This worksheet discusses the question of agreement between a pronoun and its antecedent. An antecedent is a word that comes before something. The root ante, meaning “before,” gives you a clue. In English grammar we have a term called number, and it means one of two things: singular (only one) or plural (more than one). A pronoun must agree in number with its antecedent. In other words, if you use a singular noun or pronoun, you must use a singular pronoun to refer to the original.
- Consistent Point of View
In formal writing, students often mix pronouns in the same sentence, freely substituting "you" and "they." These shifts in pronouns create a shift in point of view, which may confuse readers. This worksheet discusses common pitfals in pronoun shifts.
Misplaced and Dangling Participles
A “dangling participle” has no noun in the sentence to which the participle would logically attach. A “misplaced participle” does have a noun, but that noun does not come directly after the participle, thus creating a confusing sentence. This worksheet discusses common errors in writing misplaced or dangling participles and ways to correct them.
- Active and Passive Voice
The term voice refers to the structure of a sentence. There are two “voices” in English grammar, active voice and passive voice. In an active voice sentence, the agent (the one who does the action in the sentence) is used explicitly as the grammatical subject. The thing that the agent does something to (the direct object) comes after the verb. In a passive voice sentence, the thing that the agent does something to, is used as the grammatical subject of the sentence. The agent (the one who does the action) is placed after the subject, usually in a prepositional phrase.
- Strong Authorial Voice
Having a strong authorial voice refers to the tone of the writer. An author has a strong voice (in writing) if she presents her information with conviction and authority. Using expressions such as "in my opinion" or "it is my belief that" weakens the author's voice. This lesson gives writers simple hints on writing with authority and conviction.
- Using Strong Verbs
Sometimes students overuse the verbs "to be" and "to have" including their different forms. Such writing weakens the prose, making nouns do the bulk of the work. This sheet provides an explanation of what weak verbs are and simple steps to strengthen weak verbs in a sentence.
- Fewer vs. Less
Non-native speakers of English as well as native speakers misuse the words "less" and "fewer." These words are used in comparisons. The word "less" is used with non-count nouns, while the word "fewer" is used with count nouns. For example, "James has fewer shoes than Anna." Shoes are countable. However, "James has less anxiety than Timothy." Anxiety is not countable.
- Parallelism
In a parallel sentence, items of equivalent meaning are expressed using the same grammatical structure. Faulty parallelism occurs when those items are expressed using different structures. For example, the sentence "Ariel plays the flute, performs ballet, and records books for the blind" is parallel." The three verbs, "plays," "performs," and "records" are exprssed using the same grammatical structure.
Demonstratives (Demonstrative Pronouns)
The demonstratives this , that , these , and those , when they are used as pronouns, can sometimes make your writing unclear. In general, use the demonstrative word as an adjective, instead of a pronoun, at the beginning of a sentence.
Take, for example, the following sentences: "Justin Bieber taught himself to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. This made Justin Bieber capable of laying his own tracks in a studio."
- Subject Verb Agreement
All sentences have a subject and a verb, and that subject and verb must agree. Singular subjects require a singular verb form, while plural subjects require a plural verb form. Subject-Verb agreement is simple, in principle, but it is not always easy to carry out in speaking and writing. Three verbs, in particular, often confuse students: to be, to have, and to do.
- Confusing Sentences (Faulty Predication)
Sometimes writers rush through sentences, and the results are sometimes convoluted blurbs. Some handbooks call these sentence types "faulty predication," and indeed sometimes the predication is faulty. However, a more appropriate term may be "confusing sentences" because sometimes these sentences are written so poorly that the meaning is lost.
Some common patterns include the "xxx is when" and "the reason for xxx is because." For example, "The reason why Hugh received an F is because he did not study." The easiest way to correct a sentence of this type is to look for the "agent" or "doer of the action." In this case, the agent is "Hugh." Use the agent as the grammatical subject of the sentence, and state what the agent does as the verb.
Revised: Hugh received an F because he did not study.
Attribute Words and Ideas to Others Correctly
A great deal of the writing that high school and college students do involves commenting on the writing of others. When we use material from other writers, we must "give credit to" (or attribute) the information to those other writers. Verbs of attribution make it simple for us to do so.

Grammar Bytes! is one of my favorite grammar websites for high school students. (Plus it has a great web address: chompchomp.com). Check out this site if you need a simple, straightforward explanation of a grammar term or rule. It also has interactive exercises to practice your skills.
Purdue’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) is more academic in tone (it is run by a university after all!), but it has long been my go-to authority on grammar as well as all things having to do with proper academic writing. Here you will find tons of helpful grammar explanations, writing advice, and worksheets.
Grammar Girl is also great if you want to totally geek out on comma splices and commonly confused words–although you will want to search for the grammar issues you have questions about; there is a lot to sort through, and the blog is not incredibly well organized.
And in case you are wondering exactly what grammar, usage, and style topics you should review for the ACT, we’ve made you a guide here !
You can find a full-length ACT test for free on the ACT student website along with five additional practice passages .
Although it’s not free, you should also do your best to get the Real ACT Prep Guide , which includes five official retired ACT tests. Check out your local library or school library if you can’t get a new copy. I highly recommend doing all of these tests as part of your test prep plan.
Ready to try out some ACT English questions? Take a look at the brief passage and the five questions below!
In most busy cities and towns today, you can find automated teller machines, or ATMs, on practically every block. An ATM is an electronic communications device that allows bank customers to perform financial transactions without needing to talk to a human bank clerk. The first modern automated banking machine was developed in (1) 1969 , by a Dallas engineer named Donald Wetzel. Wetzel’s machine used plastic cards like the ones we use today. It was not until the late 1970s and early 1980s, however, when more of the population (2) had became comfortable with the idea of (3) automated technology, that automated banking machines became truly popular. Some say that it took a good old-fashioned New York blizzard to truly make ATMs a permanent institution in American life. In 1977, the chairman of Citibank spent over $100 million dollars to install ATMs (4) all over New York City, hoping they would be a success. The following winter, a blizzard shut down banks in the city for days, and ATM usage suddenly increased by 20 percent. This blizzard also launched Citibank’s long-running “The Citi Never Sleeps” campaign, (5) with posters and billboards showing customers trudging through snow drifts to get to Citibank ATMs . After Citibank’s success, other banks followed suit, and ATMs popped up in every major city in the world.
A. NO CHANGE B. 1969; C. 1969: D. 1969
E. NO CHANGE F. had been becoming G. have become H. became
A. NO CHANGE B. automated technologies that automated banking C. automated technologies, automated banking D. automated technologies; automated banking
4. Which of the following is NOT an acceptable alternative for the underlined phrase?
E. all throughout F. throughout G. in H. across
5. If the writer were to delete the underlined portion, deleting the comma and ending the sentence with a period, the paragraph would primarily lose:
A. an explanation of why so many people used ATMs during the blizzard. B. descriptive detail about the imagery of the advertising campaign. C. a restatement of an idea expressed earlier in the paragraph. D. an explanation of why ATMs became necessary in the late 1970s. Dying to know how you did ? Check out the answers and explanations below.
In this case, we do not want to put a comma after 1969 because the prepositional phrase “in 1969” is connected to the following prepositional phrase “by a Dallas engineer.” So (a) is incorrect. (b) is incorrect because what follows the semicolon cannot stand alone as a sentence. (c) demonstrates an incorrect use of a colon. So our answer is (d).
2. h. became
On the ACT, we always want to err on the side of conciseness. Shorter is almost always better, which means (h) “became” should be a tempting option. But the real grammar issue we are tackling is verb tense consistency. The sentence tells us we are talking about the 1970s and 1980s, so we know we are talking about the past, so we can eliminate (g). Answer choice (e) “had became” is never correct; it should be “had become.” (f) “Had been becoming” is also too wordy and awkward, so our answer is (h).
3. a. NO CHANGE
The punctuation in the underlined portion depends on on the punctuation that is not underlined in the sentence. We have a subordinate clause (“when more of the population….with the idea of automated technology”) that needs to be set off with commas, so even though it might otherwise seem odd to put a comma before “that,” it needs to be there for that reason, so we can eliminate (b). (d) is incorrect because we do not have an independent clause before the semicolon that can stand alone as a sentence. And “c” is missing a key word “that” that helps link the information together, so it is incomplete. So our answer is (a).
This is an idiom question about preposition usage. We can say that something spread “throughout,” “all throughout,” “across,” or “all over” a city, but to say the ATMs were installed “in” New York City changes the meaning. The sentence intends to say that they were spread throughout. So (g) is our answer because it is the one that is not acceptable.
5. b. descriptive detail about the imagery of the advertising campaign.
On these questions, we always want to pay attention to the exact information contained in the underlined portion. (a) is incorrect because that underlined portion doesn’t explain why people used ATMs during the blizzard; it just says that they did. (c) is incorrect because that idea is not stated earlier in the paragraph. (d) is trickier because you can infer from the passage that people began to believe ATMs were necessary, but the underlined information doesn’t state that. So our answer is (b): the paragraph would lose descriptive detail about the imagery of the advertising campaign.
Didn’t do as well as you’d hoped on the above questions? Or just hungry for more ACT practice? We’ve got you covered! For the below schedule, you’ll need the FREE Magoosh ACT App and about an hour and a half. Happy practicing!

Why Is Grammar So Important For ESL Learners?
How can you incorporate grammar into your lessons, free printable esl grammar worksheets.
Grammar is the structure of language: it’s how we put words together to create meaningful, widely understood sentences.
As native English speakers, we may have received some grammar instruction in school.
By and large, though, our grammar knowledge is innate: we don’t need to know fancy terms for what all the parts of speech are in order to speak correctly.
For non-native speakers, however, grammar is a lot harder. This is especially true because not every language’s grammar functions the same way.
For example, Chinese doesn’t have a plural form, and the way past and future tense work is different. Likewise, many languages such as Hebrew and French are gendered, so they refer to inanimate objects using the equivalent of “her” and “him”.
Because it’s confusing getting used to a new way of speaking, nonnative speakers should learn formal grammar so that they can understand how to put sentences together correctly and fluently in English.
Worksheets are a really great way to have your class practice grammar.
When your students do a number of exercises practicing the same grammar concept (like future tense or indirect objects), they gain a better understanding of how the concept works in different settings.
Doing the work by themselves also forces your students to pay attention and try more, which will help them apply the grammar concepts they’ve learned in their own writing and speaking.
