This Pennsylvania homework club is helping kids succeed!

Localish logo

AMBLER, Pa. -- A group of experienced educators in Pennsylvania are helping neighborhood kids exceed in the classroom by giving them extra attention after school.

Patti Fabiani, who has 26 years of experience in the Wissahickon School District in Ambler, originally started the "Rising Stars Homework Club" in 2015.

She did so to help kids who were struggling in school catch up.

With the help of Heather Maltin, a former high school teacher, Patti revived the club during the pandemic, seeing the need for kids to get one-on-one attention was greater than ever.

That need led them to seek out volunteers.

During the 2021-22 school year, the club helped 45 kids excel in their school work.

Everyday, the kids would be bused after school to the Ambler Borough building, where they would work with the educators. And the results were outstanding!

During the pandemic, the need for kids to get one-on-one attention was greater than ever. So the team added members and helped more than 45 kids excel in their school work.

This program is unique because it is community-based, our supplies are all donations and the staff is 100% volunteer. Donations of both foods for snacks, monetary donations for field trips and parties as well as purchasing materials that are used by the students are made by generous donors from our community and beyond. If anyone is interested in making a donation it can be made through Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard and designated for Rising Stars Homework Club. The club is a labor of love; where children receive a wide range of support and services at no cost.

Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard was founded in 1973 when Ms. Mattie learned of people in her neighborhood struggling to put food on the table for their families. She recruited friends, family, and fellow parishioners to help collect and distribute food. Almost 50 years later, we are still fulfilling her mission.

We serve just over 400 families (over 1,200 individuals) in Ambler and the surrounding 12 zip codes within Montgomery County. Our primary focus is to provide food, clothing, and other essentials for families that fall within 150% of the state poverty level. The wraparound services that we offer are examples of the ways that we incorporate the needs our clients express to us.

This fiscal year, we have distributed over 365,000 pounds of food/non-food items as well as shared over 25,000 items from our clothing boutique. We continue to get new families signing up to be clients so we anticipate those figures to continue to grow next year.
