JetBlue Seating Chart

JetBlue Airways is a prominent American airline that started in 1998, intending to dominate the low-cost airline space. The company is headquartered on Long Island, New York, and made its first flight in 2000 at JFK International Airport. Since then, the company has grown to the point where it flies over 30 million passengers on 925 daily trips throughout the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

A fleet of 286 planes ensures the company can take passengers to over 82 cities in 22 countries. Its IATA code is B6, and the ICAO code is JBU, signifying its operations from the JFK International Airport. Its aircraft include the Airbus A series and the Embraer, two fan favorites.

And since these aircraft have different configurations, the airline encourages passengers to use the JetBlue seating chart to get familiar with the layouts. This strategy also ties to JetBlue’s plan to put the customers’ needs first beyond just reducing the cost of flying. And that explains JetBlue’s success in its niche, considering how relatively young the company is.

A standard JetBlue Mint seating chart shows detailed seating arrangements in aircraft cabins, points out the preferred seats, and highlights features like expected legroom, seat widths and recline angles, and comfort levels. And since each plane model has a difference, even regular passengers would benefit from checking the chart before booking to increase their chances of flying comfortably.

JetBlue Airways planes have cabins like Business, Even More Space, and Core, servicing different passengers with different amenities for different prices. There are also versions of their planes with Mint in their names to highlight their premium nature. The A321 Classic with Mint and the A321neo with Mint are examples, and passengers need to look through their JetBlue seat selection charts to tell the difference between them and other aircraft.

JetBlue Seat Map: Overview

Even more space.

Even More Space

Passengers looking for an improved flying experience from standard Economy flights can purchase Even More Space tickets. For aircraft models that don’t have Business seats like the Airbus A320 (320), Even More Space seats are at the front of the plane. Sometimes, they are between two Core cabins and close to exit rows in the middle of the plane, where they are often among the best JetBlue airplane seats.

The JetBlue seats in this cabin have between 4 and 8 inches of extra pitch. Even More Space cabin occupants enjoy first access to overhead bins, and if they use the JetBlue seats map, they can choose preferred seats like 6ABEF on the Airbus A321 (32S) Mint. They could also choose 11th-row seats on the Airbus A320 (320) and enjoy more space to stretch their legs because of the exit passage in front of them.

Core seat JetBlue

The Core seats JetBlue planes use are similar to the Economy seats other airlines offer. They often take up the most space in the plane and are positioned behind the Business or JetBlue First Class seats and the Even More Space section.

Some seats in this cabin have misaligned windows, and the last row is close to the lavatory and galley. The good part is that JetBlue plane seats have thinner armrests, making them feel less restrictive to passengers. So, the seats in this cabin may be slightly more comfortable than other Economy seats.

These planes have the amenities to offer passengers a JetBlue First Class seating experience. They enjoy the comfort of seats that can recline 180 degrees to become flatbeds and, for some, Business suites with a privacy door. These amenities, however, are reserved for those who purchased JetBlue Mint seats in the Business cabin.

The best seats in this cabin are the Business Class suites because of the flatbed seats, extra space, privacy, and the occupants being among the first to board and alight. JetBlue Mint planes also have Even More Space and Core cabins, but they are behind the Business seats, and the occupants can only board after the latter have.

How JetBlue seat selection works

You booked your flight and are ready to travel, but where will you sit on the plane? Your ability to choose your seats with JetBlue depends on which fare you purchased and your elite status.

In this guide to JetBlue Airways seat selection, you'll learn what you need to know to pick the best seats for your next flight, including any fees that apply and what the seating charts look like.

JetBlue operates a variety of seat types on its aircraft, including economy, Even More Space and Mint seats.

So, how much is seat selection on JetBlue? The answer depends on which fare class you buy and the flight selected.

Blue Basic passengers pay a fee to select seats more than 24 hours in advance, while everyone else can pick seats at no extra charge. Upgrades to Even More Space vary based on the flight and which seat you choose.

NerdWallet conducted an analysis of fees among U.S. domestic airlines. On average, JetBlue has one of the lowest seat selection fees at just $4 per passenger.

Your fees will vary based on your flight, fare class and seat selected. All fares, except Blue Basic, can choose any economy seat without paying extra.

JetBlue offers five fare classes to meet passengers' needs and budgets. Each fare class has different benefits and restrictions that passengers need to be aware of before buying their ticket.

Basic economy

Blue Basic fares are the basic economy tickets offered by JetBlue. These tickets have numerous restrictions that allow JetBlue to offer lower fares. Blue Basic tickets do not allow carry-on bags, and there is a fee for checking a bag.

Passengers cannot select their seat more than 24 hours in advance unless they're willing to pay a JetBlue seat selection fee. There is a fee of $100 to $200 for changes or cancellations. Additionally, these fares only earn 1x Base TrueBlue points versus 3x points for other fares.

Core tickets are the standard economy seats on JetBlue flights. Passengers buying Blue, Blue Plus or Blue Extra fares choose these seats when booking their flight, at check-in or any time before departure.

Benefits of each fare class vary, but all three include a carry-on bag and charge no fees for changes or cancellations. They also earn 3x points for the flight. Blue Extra tickets offer the most benefits, including no fees for same-day switches or standby, early boarding and priority security access at available airports.

Even More Space

Even More Space seats provide up to 7 inches of extra legroom, early boarding and other benefits. Although Blue Basic fares do not include advance seat selection, these passengers can upgrade to Even More Space — for a fee — and select an available seat.

Mint fares are the premium cabin seats on JetBlue flights. These seats feature fully lie-flat seats, with adjustable firmness and a massage feature. There are three types of Mint class seats:

Mint Suites.

Mint Studios.

Mint passengers enjoy high-end dining, an artisan wine list, Wanderful wellness kits, Tuft & Needle sleep kits and more.

Elite members of JetBlue's TrueBlue loyalty program are called Mosaic members. There are four levels of Mosaic elite status based on how many "tiles" a traveler has earned.

Mosaic members can upgrade their tickets to Even More Space seats at no extra charge if seats are available. Level 1 members can upgrade during check-in, while Level 2 and higher members get Even More Space seats during booking.

When you reach Mosaic 3, you get four certificates to upgrade your ticket to Mint seating, based on availability. At Mosaic 4, you receive an additional two certificates.

JetBlue partners with American Airlines to offer reciprocal benefits for elite members. AAdvantage Gold members and above receive complimentary Even More Space seats at check-in if they're available.

During the checkout process, you're given the option of selecting your JetBlue seats. If you don't select a seat when buying your ticket, you can choose later online, through the JetBlue mobile app or at check-in.

Blue Basic fares must pay a fee for selecting a seat more than 24 hours in advance of departure time. The price varies per flight and location of the seat you've chosen.

"Core" seats are available at no charge, and they are available for all passengers.

Passengers flying Mint class fares receive exclusive access to premium seats at the front of the plane. They can select their seat during checkout or at any time before their flight.

JetBlue seat selection rules vary based on which fare class you buy. All passengers, except Blue Basic, can choose their seats at any time from booking to check-in without paying a fee.

Blue Basic passengers can select their seats for free within 24 hours of departure, or they can pay a small fee to choose ahead of time. JetBlue flights offer three seat types — economy, Even More Space and Mint premium seats.

The airline offers one of the best seat selection rules, with all economy seats available to every passenger. For passengers willing to splurge, they can upgrade to Even More Space or Mint seats for an extra fee.

All seats are equipped with an entertainment system, featuring 36 channels of DIRECTV® plus more than 100 channels of XM Satellite Radio for free and, on flights longer than two hours, a selection of movies on FOX InFlight Premium Entertainment. How to get upgraded on JetBlue Airways

JetBlue Mint Business Class

Are you looking to score an upgraded seat on JetBlue ? If so, there's a way — as long as you have JetBlue Mosaic status .

If you don't have Mosaic status, don't fret: For those without status, there's also the option of redeeming your TrueBlue points to get an upgrade without paying a dime. These upgrade options include Even More Space seats that offer more legroom and lie-flat Mint seats .

Here's what you need to know about getting a free JetBlue upgrade.

Book Even More Space seats for a JetBlue upgrade

flight seat map jetblue

Within JetBlue's economy-class cabin, you'll find Even More Space seats with up to 7 inches of extra legroom. These seats will also give you Group A boarding and access to expedited security lanes (where available).

The cost for Even More Space seats varies by route. When booking your flight, the seat map will show the price to purchase Even More Space seating. An Even More Space seat is available on all JetBlue flights for all economy fares. If you book a Blue Basic fare and pay for an Even More Space seat, you can bring a carry-on bag onto the flight for free. Unfortunately, though, there's no way to use your points for this upgraded seat option.

If you need to change or cancel your JetBlue flight before departure, JetBlue will refund the seat upgrade fee.

Upgrade to an Even More Space seat with JetBlue status

flight seat map jetblue

Instead of paying to select an Even More Space seat, those with JetBlue Mosaic status can potentially score an upgrade based on their status level.

Last year, JetBlue introduced four tier levels : Mosaic 1, Mosaic 2, Mosaic 3 and Mosaic 4. Those with Mosaic 2, 3 or 4 status are able to select an Even More Space seat for free during the booking process (pending availability). Travelers with Mosaic 1 status are eligible for a complimentary Even More Space upgrade but not until checking in for their flight.

Best of all, this Even More Space upgrade also applies to traveling companions on the same reservation.

Get a JetBlue upgrade to Mint seats

flight seat map jetblue

JetBlue offers a premium cabin called Mint on select aircraft. The Mint cabin contains fully lie-flat seats with adjustable firmness cushions, a massage feature and a Tuft and Needle-designed comforter and pillow.

Each Mint seat has a TV with free on-demand movies, shows and other entertainment options. On some routes, you'll even find revamped seats, offering a private suite with a closing door. When booking a Mint seat, you'll also receive additional benefits, such as two complimentary checked bags, priority boarding and access to priority security lanes (when available).

Mint cabins are typically available on longer routes, including select transcontinental , Latin American and Caribbean flights, and all flights to or from London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Amsterdam and Paris. The JetBlue Mint route map shows all city pairs offering Mint seats.

Related: JetBlue's first Amsterdam flight is in the books; what it was like on the inaugural

Pricing for Mint is typically more favorable than lie-flat, premium-cabin seating on other airlines. However, Mint is usually significantly more expensive than standard economy seating. Fortunately, there are a few ways to get a JetBlue Mint seat without the hefty price tag.

Book a JetBlue Mint seat with points

You can redeem JetBlue TrueBlue points if you're looking to save some cash on a Mint seat. Since JetBlue uses a dynamic pricing scheme, the award rate is directly tied to the cash price. In short, the more expensive a flight is, the more points it will require.

However, there isn't a set rate at which you can redeem JetBlue points for Mint. TPG's valuations peg the value of JetBlue points at 1.4 cents each, so you'll typically want to aim for that redemption rate when redeeming JetBlue points.

Related: 6 things JetBlue should change about Mint business class

If you don't have enough points in your account to book a Mint seat, JetBlue also allows you to use a combination of points and cash (this is the case for all JetBlue reservations made with points). Additionally, you can transfer points from American Express Membership Rewards , Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards to JetBlue TrueBlue.

If a particular route offers a JetBlue Mint seat, the option (with the number of points required) will be displayed right next to all other fare classes. If a Mint booking option does not appear, then, unfortunately, that particular route doesn't offer Mint seats.

flight seat map jetblue

If you are booking through the JetBlue app, you'll need to click on each flight option to see if there's Mint seating. Additionally, on the app, you'll easily see whether Mint is an option for the city you are flying to or from by looking for a green icon next to the city name.

Upgrade to a Mint seat with JetBlue status

flight seat map jetblue

If you have JetBlue Mosaic 3 or 4 status, you'll have the opportunity to earn Mint upgrade certificates. Once earning JetBlue Mosaic 3 status, you'll receive four Move to Mint certificates. Those who qualify for JetBlue Mosaic 4 status will then receive another two Move to Mint certificates.

These upgrade certificates allow you to book a regular economy-class ticket and then apply your certificate to the flight of your choice (pending availability). To upgrade your seat, select the "Move to Mint" option under your "Manage trip" details. (Keep in mind that you must apply your certificate at least two hours prior to departure to successfully upgrade your seat.)

The number of certificates required per flight is dynamic and can change based on the route and flight price. For example, a family of four can potentially fly from New York to Los Angeles one-way in a Mint seat with these certificates once during the year. If you're flying solo, you can redeem one certificate at a time and enjoy a seat in the front of the plane four times throughout the year on the same route (as long as the route only requires one certificate). Just note that the Move to Mint certificate holder must be traveling to redeem the certificates.

Related: How to increase the value of your JetBlue TrueBlue points by 10%

Unfortunately, you aren't able to use an upgrade certificate when booking a Blue Basic fare, though if you're using points, this won't matter, as this fare class isn't available for points bookings. The certificates also can't be used with group bookings and JetBlue Vacations packages. Remember, too, that pets and unaccompanied minors aren't allowed in Mint seats.

Bottom line

JetBlue only offers complimentary upgrade certificates for Mint to those who have earned Mosaic 3 or Mosaic 4 status — and the routes are limited. There's no space-available upgrade or waitlist option for Mint, even if you have Mosaic status.

If your flight doesn't offer Mint seats or you don't have any upgrade certificates to burn, know that you can upgrade to an Even More Space seat for free when booking your flight if you have Mosaic 2, 3 or 4 status. Even with Mosaic 1 status, you'll have the chance to snag an Even More Space seat, though you'll have to wait until check-in for your flight to see if one is available for you to grab.

While JetBlue's upgrade policy isn't nearly as good as the upgrade policies for Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, it's far better than the lower-cost airlines such as Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Carl Icahn wins seats on JetBlue board after taking stake in airline

thumbnail

  • Carl Icahn won two seats on the board of JetBlue Airways.
  • The new board seats came less than a week after he disclosed a nearly 10% stake in JetBlue and that talks were underway for board representation.
  • JetBlue has been losing money since 2020 and new CEO Joanna Geraghty has promised to cut costs and restore reliability.

In this article

Carl Icahn won his push for seats on JetBlue Airways' board of directors, according to a statement from the airline Friday, days after disclosing a nearly 10% stake in the New York-based airline and that he was in talks for board representation there.

The two new directors are Jesse Lynn, general counsel of Icahn Enterprises, and Steven Miller, a portfolio manager of Icahn Capital.

Shares of JetBlue were up about 4% in after-hours trading following the announcement.

The JetBlue investment isn't Icahn's first investment in the airline industry. In one of his more infamous activist campaigns, the corporate raider took TWA private in the late 1980s, and the airline struggled and filed for bankruptcy.

Icahn said in disclosing his JetBlue stake that he believes the shares are undervalued. JetBlue's stock is down more than 19% over the past 12 months as of Friday's close. The NYSE Arca Airline Index, which tracks the broader sector, is up about 7% during the same period.

JetBlue's new CEO, Joanna Geraghty, took the helm Monday, and the carrier has appointed a pair of airline veterans to  get it back on track.

"Building on our distinct brand and unique value proposition, we are focused on delivering value to our shareholders and all of our stakeholders, and we welcome the contributions of our new board members as we move forward with that common goal," Geraghty said in a statement on Friday.

JetBlue hasn't posted a profit since before the Covid-19 pandemic and has been cutting costs, trying to become more reliable after a post-Covid travel surge and a  blocked merger  with budget carrier  Spirit Airlines . A federal judge last month ruled against a combination of the two airlines, citing reduced competition.

JetBlue had argued it needed the tie-up to help it compete against the largest American carriers. JetBlue and Spirit are appealing the judge's ruling. Don't miss these stories from CNBC PRO:

Jetblue customers outraged as airline quietly hikes checked-baggage fees: ‘inflation and greed rising’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

JetBlue has quietly hiked the price of checking a bags — sparking outrage on social media from passengers who branded the move a greedy cash grab.

The New York-based airline is now charging travelers $45 for their first stardard-size bag checked within 24 hours of departure — and $60 for a second bag.

JetBlue is offering a $10 discount for passengers who are ahead of the game: The first checked bag paid for at least a day before departure is $35, while the second is $50.

JetBlue plane taking off

Previously, checking one bag with the airline cost $35 no matter the timing, with a second one priced at $45 more.

The change wasn’t widely communicated by JetBlue. Rather, the airline quietly updated the “Bag Info” on its website , where fine print says that the price increase was implemented on Feb. 1.

The stealthy change drew the ire of passengers on social media, including one by the name of Yau who called the juiced-up baggage fees “atrocious.”

“Inflation and greed rising,” the hacked-off customer added of the new pricing model.

“@JetBlue has changed all of the policies that’s made me a loyal costumer and I’m tired of their mess!” yet another furious customer wrote .

Earlier this month, travelers took to X confused by the cost of checking their luggage. “@JetBlue I went to go add my checked bags. It’s a month away from my flight and it says it’s $35. I thought it was $30????” one user wrote .

JetBlue did not announce the change, bur rather quietly updated its website with the increased prices, which became effective on Feb. 1.

JetBlue was among the first to raise its checked-baggage fees to $30 back in 2018. Less than 18 months later, the airline increased the price again and by January 2020, the airline’s fee for checking one bag was $35.

JetBlue told The Post that hiking baggage fees was “one step we are taking to get our company back to profitability and cover the increased costs of transporting bags.”

The price increase, which was earlier reported on by The Points Guy , does not apply to JetBlue’s transatlantic flights, which have their own price chart.

“The cost of doing business has gone up significantly due to increased wages, higher fuel costs, and other inflationary pressure, and we remain unprofitable since COVID.”

JetBlue has also recently jacked the price of preferred seats -- including window and aisle seats at the front of the plane or in exit rows -- as well as its extra-legroom seats.

“By adjusting fees for added services that only certain customers use, we can keep base fares low and ensure customer favorites like seatback TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi remain free for everyone,” the airline added.

It also noted that JetBlue’s Mosaic elite customers, as well as those traveling in Mint business class, will still get two free checked bags, while those with the JetBlue Plus Card will also continue to receive their first checked bag for free.

JetBlue’s new checked bag fees are just the latest ancillary charge the airline has been jacked up.

Earlier this year, the airline started charging a preferred seating fee. The initiative, called “Core Preferred,” makes aisle and window seats in favorable locations on the plane — such as the front and in the exit row — more expensive.

The price of booking one of JetBlue’s so-called “Even More Space” seats with additional legroom also got a price hike late last year as part of its dynamic pricing algorithm based on factors like route and demand, according to The Points Guy.

JetBlue and Spirit were the two airlines to lose money in 2023 as larger rivals reported stronger profits.

However, JetBlue has insisted that its recent cost-cutting plans mean it will be “approaching break-even” in 2024 despite offering $3.8 billion to acquire ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit — a move that  was blocked by a federal judge last month.

JetBlue and Spirit are appealing the decision, which would have created the nation’s fifth-largest airline.

It also recently announced changes among its C-suite ranks. As of Monday, Joanna Geraghty, formerly the company’s president and chief operating officer, succeeded Robin Hayes as CEO.

American Airlines also made headlines this week for lifting its baggage fees.

The Forth Worth, Texas-based airline announced Tuesday that checking a bag on a domestic flight will rise from $30 to $35 online and $40 if purchased at the airport.

American Airlines announced this week that checking a bag on a domestic flight will rise from $30 to $35 online and $40 if purchased at the airport.

The fee for a second checked bag will rise from $40 to $45 both online and at the airport.

The airline is also raising bag fees by $5 for short international flights including those to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean — now $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second.

American last raised bag fees in 2018 after introducing bag fees back in 2008 — when checking a bag cost just $15 — to cope with the rising cost of jet fuel.

Since then, they have become a  steady revenue source for most major US carriers . American easily led the industry by raising $1.4 billion in bag fees in 2022, the last year for which Transportation Department figures are available.

JetBlue, reeling from kiboshed Spirit merger, has a new suitor in corporate raider Carl Icahn who’s looking to get his mojo back

Misery loves company and after facing steep stock price declines of more than 50% each, activist investor Carl Icahn and JetBlue might need each other right now.

Icahn Enterprises disclosed a 9.9% ownership stake in airline JetBlue today, Icahn’s first foray back onto the dance floor after promising that the firm would “stick to our knitting” after short-seller Hindenburg Research published a biting criticism of the company last year. Shares of Icahn Enterprises are down about 72.2% during the past five years, and more than 60% since the Hindenburg report.

Meanwhile, JetBlue has been licking its wounds since a judge’s ruling blocked an estimated $3.8 billion merger with Spirit Airlines . JetBlue’s stock is down 66% during the past five years but rose about 16% after Icahn disclosed his shares in the airline today.

Icahn disclosed in the filing today that the firm acquired the JetBlue stock because it believes it is “undervalued and represented an attractive investment opportunity.” Icahn Enterprises has had discussions with board members and executives about seeking a seat on the JetBlue board and continues to hold talks with the airline, according to the filing.

In a statement, JetBlue said it welcomes Icahn’s overtures.

“We are always open to constructive dialogue with our investors as we continue to execute our plan to enhance value for all of our shareholders and stakeholders,” said the company in an email.

However, the timing for JetBlue may be less than ideal given that the company’s new CEO, Joanna Geraghty, moved to the helm officially today. Geraghty was president and chief operating officer since 2018 and previously served as executive vice president and chief people officer. Chief operating officer Warren Christie also officially started today, after serving as head of security, safety, and fleet operations.

Geraghty replaced departing CEO Robin Hayes, who served in the role since February 2015. Hayes will stick around on the 10-person board, which is chaired by Peter Boneparth. Dealing with Icahn might be old hat for him. Boneparth is a former senior advisor to a division of investment management firm The Blackstone Group and a former advisor to private equity firm Irving Capital Partners. He also chairs the board of Kohl’s, which faced off with a group of activists in 2021.

It was also an eventful Monday for Icahn Enterprises.

Utility company American Electric Power announced today that it had reached an appointment and nomination agreement with Icahn’s funds to appoint two new directors to the board. Icahn Enterprises senior managing director Hunter Gary joined the AEP board along with Henry Linginfelter, former executive vice president of Southern Company Gas. Gary’s appointment is subject to regulatory approvals and he won’t have voting rights until the company gets them.

Want a Window or Aisle Seat? JetBlue Is Charging For That Now Too

In the ever-evolving landscape of airline fees, JetBlue Airways has recently made a notable addition to its revenue strategy with the introduction of "Core Preferred" seat fees, adding another layer to the payment tiers for airline seats. This move reflects broader trends in the airline industry as carriers seek to maximize revenue streams beyond traditional ticket sales.

Earn Points and Miles: Find the best travel credit card for nearly free travel

Travel More: Build your travel fund faster and plan your escape

JetBlue's latest fee

JetBlue's Core Preferred seat fee offers passengers the opportunity to secure aisle and window seats in prime locations on the plane, such as closer to the front. However, the upgrade does not include any significant changes to the overall flight experience besides seat location.

Prices for these seats vary, ranging from around $10 to $49 depending on the route.

Seat fees: the new baggage fees

Baggage fees, which were once the primary gripe for travelers, will now take a backseat to seat fees as larger airlines like JetBlue join the bandwagon.

JetBlue is the latest among major airliners to start incorporating tiered-seating payments. Spirit Airlines is one of the more famous airlines to do this, marketed as a discount airline but then charging passengers for almost every extra add-on beyond the ticket including seat selection, carry-ons, and refreshments.

Many travelers believe these fees are deceptive as passengers book tickets based on prices displayed at the beginning of booking. For example, a flight from New York to Boston might read as $300 when searching on Google or various travel sites, but with added seat fees and taxes the ticket might ring up closer to $500.

With the total revenue generated from seat fees among eight major US airline carriers estimated at $4.2 billion in 2022, it's clear that these charges have become a cornerstone of airline profitability.

Types of seat fees

Airlines employ various types of seat fees to cater to different passenger preferences and travel needs. These may include fees for extra legroom, preferred seating closer to the front of the plane, or specific amenities such as seatback TVs and power outlets.

Understanding the different fee structures can help passengers navigate their options more effectively. Oftentimes there are ticket options that allow passengers to pay a little more upfront to have the luxury to select whatever seat they like from the time of booking and even in the event of a cancellation.

However, the new fees have many travelers feeling stuck. Should a passenger not select their seats, in many cases their tickets can be forfeited in the event of an overbooking. Purchasing a seat selection gives passengers an added level of security that they will be on their flight — but at a premium.

Also, while purchasing a seat might bump you up in the get-the-boot hierarchy, it does not guarantee anything. Sometimes, airlines randomly choose who will be punted off a flight due to their own clerical errors. That said, those paying for first class and premium economy are likely in the clear.

Is there anything flyers can do?

While seat fees may seem unavoidable, there are strategies passengers can use to mitigate their impact. Some airlines offer free seat selection with elite status or as part of higher-priced fare tiers.

Travelers can look into certain credit cards that have alliances with airlines to receive extra points/miles or make sure to sign up for each airline’s benefits system before traveling. Here are some top travel credit cards .

Additionally, passengers can explore alternative seating options during the check-in process if paid assignments are not their preference.

Bottom line

JetBlue's introduction of Core Preferred seat fees is indicative of broader industry trends aimed at maximizing revenue potential. Seat fees have emerged as a significant source of revenue for airlines, rivaling the once-dominant baggage fees. As airlines continue to innovate their fee structures, passengers should stay informed and explore their options to make the most of their travel experience. While seat fees may be an unavoidable aspect of modern air travel, understanding the landscape can empower passengers to navigate with confidence and make informed decisions to save money .
