Whether you’re a college student, business owner, or busy parent, balancing all your responsibilities can be tricky. Creating a simple weekly schedule makes it easier to stay organized and plan ahead, and using a pre-formatted template makes this even easier. There are many potential uses for a weekly schedule template.

We’ve compiled templates for both Microsoft Excel and Word that are easy to use, customize and print, and they are free to download. These templates are compatible with older versions of Excel and Word, including Excel 2003 and 2007 and can also be saved in PDF format. Some of the templates are formatted like weekly calendars, but if you’re looking for monthly, yearly or other calendars, we have a variety of Excel calendar templates available.

It feels like homework never stops getting piled on, and keeping track of it all can feel a little chaotic. That’s where a homework schedule comes in. With a good schedule, you won’t have to worry about missing homework assignments or not having enough time to finish them, and it’s surprisingly easy to put one together. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry—we’ll walk you through what to do step-by-step below!

Setting Up a Homework Schedule

Step 1 Set a time frame for doing homework.

Creating a Homework Space

Step 1 Select your environment carefully.

Understanding What Needs To Get Done

Step 1 List all of the homework and activities that you have for that day or week.

  • The subject or course in which the work is assigned (for example, Spanish , algebra , French or English )
  • Know what you're expected to hand in or do and ask if you do not understand (for example, turn in an essay , develop a PowerPoint presentation, or take a test.)
  • The details of your assignments (for example, double-spaced or single-spaced, blue ink or black).
  • Page numbers (which pages you need to read, study, or refer to complete your assignment.)
  • Due date of the assignment.

Getting All of Your Homework Done

Step 1 Estimate how much time will be needed to complete each assignment.

  • To solve this problem, if you cannot meet all the deadlines, use a static priority rate-monotonic policy. Find the course that releases new homework the most frequently, and list it the highest (do the work first), and so forth. This is mathematically optimal among all static-priority scheduling policies. In other words, if ANY static priority scheme can meet all the deadlines, the rate-monotonic static priority scheme will meet all the deadlines, too. When the static priority scheme misses deadlines, it is deterministic - the lowest priority class assignments will be skipped, so it behaves predictably when you are overloaded. If certain assignments have the same due date, then start with the one(s) that are hardest or will take the longest.

Step 3 Break down your homework time.

  • If you have a five-page English paper due on Friday, evenly spread the total amount of hours you believe it is going to take to complete the paper between each day.

Step 4 Write in break times.

Expert Q&A

  • Avoid distractions such as TV, video games, phone conversation, or surfing the internet. You must fully devote your schedule to doing this. That means turning off all electronics except your lamp , clock , and room light, and, if needed, your computer. You may even want to turn off your phone. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Tips from our Readers

  • Try writing reminders on sticky-notes about your assignment due dates or important information you really need to remember. Put these sticky notes in a place you regularly go to in your house (such as your homework area, bedroom, or closet), so that you'll see them and be reminded.
  • If you're having a really hard time concentrating, take a short break (even if it isn't your schedule break time). Even taking a walk outside for ten minutes or grabbing a quick snack from the kitchen can help you reset.
  • If music with lyrics distracts you, don't try to listen to it while you do homework. Consider playing white noise or instrumental music instead to help you focus.

Purpose of Printable Homework Charts

Why should you use printable charts ? Structure, organization, and immediate feedback are just a few reasons why weekly homework charts may be the answer to your prayers regarding your child's academic performance. You can take away privileges, ground them, and use other forms of punishment, but until you help your child solve his or her organizational issues, you're really not solving the problem. Some ways a homework chart can help your child include:

  • Keep assignments organized long-term
  • Stay motivated to complete homework
  • Feel a sense of accomplishment when checking off assignments
  • Reinforce positive child behavior and promote responsibility
  • Commit assignments to memory through the act of writing them down

Homework Chart Ideas

Homework charts are easy to find and print, but they aren't always easy to use. Keep in mind that if you focus too much on the chart, however, your child may begin to resent it. You want this to be a positive experience, not a negative one! Help your child create a new habit and make the most of these organizational tools using creative means>

  • Create a notebook filled with homework charts that serve as an instant checklist for kids, parents, and teachers to access and review.
  • Assign one color for each subject by printing each chart in a different color or using a colored pencil to color in the subjects.
  • Attach a file folder or magnetic clip to your refrigerator and place each week's homework chart in the folder or on the clip so it's seen daily.
  • Add a reward system like putting star stickers next to work completed then offer a reward like going to dinner or a movie for a certain number of stars.
  • Address any consequences for failing to use the homework chart adequately such as limiting TV time.
  • Review the charts at the end of each week with your child to emphasize the importance of organization and reinforce topics.

Success Through Organization

Kids' lives are busy and it's easy to forget about things like small homework assignments. Give your kids the tools they need to succeed in school such as homework charts and other organizational tools.

Selecting a Homework Chart for Your Students

When selecting a Homework Chart, consider whether you want to track homework for one subject or many subjects. If you want to track homework for a single subject, use a Homework Chart that requires five repetitions, one for each day of the week Monday through Friday. If you want to track homework for several subject areas, choose one of the weekly Homework Charts which looks more like a calendar grid and has space for days of the week, as well as headings at the top for each subject area.

Using Our Printable Homework Charts

Using a Homework Chart can help take the stress out of the parental role of making sure homework is completed. When a child or teen understands what is expected and can see the chart posted as a reminder, it can provide a needed nudge. Others need more than a nudge(!) and will need expectations clearly outlined in order to receive an incentive reward.

Keep it Interesting

Watch for new opportunities to celebrate your students’ homework successes. Look for students who are making progress, even if there’s still a lot of room for improvement. Remember that baby steps are cause for celebration, too. Start with simple expectations and grow from there. Aim to keep things fresh, adjusting goals, using new incentives and selecting different charts from our collection.

How to Use an Advanced Homework Progress Tracker

The homework progress tracker allows you and your child to keep track of several homework related activities. It is important that you help your child with this for the first few weeks to ensure that your child understands ho to use it. You could also involve your child’s teacher with certain portions of this chart. For example, you could ask your child’s teacher to initial the chart when an entire homework assignment has been turned in. This might be more appropriate for some children, particularly those who have a history of being dishonest about school work.

Before you begin, you should decide where you will keep the chart. For this chart, it might be best to slide it into the front outside of a binder with a clear plastic cover, or slide the chart into a clear sheet protector inside the binder. It is important that the chart is in a place that is readily accessible and visible. Kids who have ADHD can benefit if the chart is in a spot where they will easily see it. This will help them remember to use it.

Step 1: Establish The Baseline

To begin, enter your child’s class subjects in the left hand column. For the first week you simply sit with your child and go through the worksheet together each day. Working one subject at a time, have him either check “None” if there is no homework, or have him do his homework before checking the “Done” box. The “Packed” box should be checked after the assignment is put in the child’s folder and/or backpack. Your child is responsible for checking the “Turned In” box when he hands in each assignment the next day. Once his homework is done, enter checkmarks for the appropriate boxes on the lower Task section of the worksheet. You may add other tasks if desired. If something is not complete, simply leave the box blank. It is not recommended to put any negative words or symbols such as “No” or a frowning face.

At the end of the week, count up the number of checkmarks your child earned each day or for the entire week. This is the baseline. Now that you know the baseline, you can set a goal for the following week.

Step 2: Establish a Goal

You can set daily goals, weekly goals, or both. Here are some examples:

Daily goal and reward system: The maximum number of checkmarks your child can earn each day with the chart unmodified is 22. Suppose your child currently gets about 10 check marks each day. It is not reasonable to ask your child to immediately begin getting 22 check marks each day. Rather you want to start where he is and slowly work forward. You might make it a goal for your child to get 15 checkmarks per day next week. Each day your child reaches 15 checkmarks next week, he would earn a reward such as an extra half hour on the computer.

Weekly goal and reward system: You could also offer weekly rewards. You count up the baseline total of checkmarks during the first week- let’s say 50 for the week as an example. For the next week you might set a goal for your child to earn 65 checkmarks. If he gets 65 or more checkmarks next week, this would earn him a larger reward on the weekend such as going to the movies.

Step 3: Continue to Evaluate Progress

As your child achieves each goal, you can slightly increase the goal for the following week. Don’t hesitate to mix up the rewards if your child is getting bored, or offer two choices for your child to choose from.

homework charts

July 27, 2018 By Katie 3 Comments

Back to school brings mixed emotions in my home. For the kids, of course, it’s mostly sadness that the hazy lazy days of a hot summer have come and gone. It’s back to school and “too much homework” as they always say. For myself, as a Mom of a growing brood, there are the pros: first day of school signs and pictures, cute back to school clothes, quieter and more productive days, etc. But with the start of school, there is also the realization that I only get so many fun summers with my little ones before they want to hang out with their friends more than Mom. 😪 I also know that those clothes and supplies can cost a small fortune and with school comes endless homework, extracurricular activities, and the endless stream of paperwork and dates and times to remember for  each  child. Yep, definitely a mixed bag!

Of all the mixed emotions there is a constant that always seems to be a source of frustration in our home: homework. When it comes to homework I’m very, very comfortably between the  tiger moms and the free-rangers, who respectively are strict disciplinarians who want sky-high academic results at all times and parents content to let their kids learn by doing and being independent as possible.

I’m not saying any of the either of the above approaches are more correct than the other, to each their own and every child needs to be parented in the way that suits them best. But I’m definitely not going to lose it if my kids miss a day of homework. Neither am I going to let them just play every day. Balance in all things is my philosophy. I’d assume most Moms rest in this cozy middle area with me. 🙂

In order to find the balance between too much and too little homework, I’ve spent some time creating homework charts, checklists, and planners for a variety of situations. ( I’ll be adding more and more over time so check back if you don’t see the one you want. Or leave a comment and I might  be able to squeeze in some time to create new ones based off reader feedback.). You may also like these printable first day of school signs and bedtime routine charts too. #justsayin.

I hope one of the ones below, whether you use rewards or eschew them, works for your family and each specific child no matter what parenting style you use in your home! Just click on the text links below each preview image to download your PDF and then print your preferred hw chart for your home.

WEEKLY HOMEWORK CHARTS

Below are a variety of weekly homework charts and planners. While they vary a little bit most of them allow some combination of assignments or class, days of the week, dates, due dates, daily reading tracking, and some form of completion in the form of a checkbox or otherwise. I hope these weekly homework planners make life easier this year!

HOMEWORK REWARD CHARTS

The charts below are set up for monthly tracking BUT just because they are monthly homework charts doesn’t mean you can’t set rewards at the daily or weekly level. I’ve always found it to be more effective when I tailor the rewards to each child and subject. Sometimes they need a reward on a daily basis (really struggling to form a good habit), sometimes on a weekly basis and sometimes the reward is such that they better do their homework for an entire month if I’m holding up my end of the bargain! So, whether you use these as a homework sticker chart or simply use checkmarks or something else entirely, hopefully, you’ll find a method that will work for your child! Even better if we can inspire them to  love learning and the reward chart becomes a temporary aid to unlock a lifetime of learning!

Printable Behavior Chart Template

What are behavior charts?

Behavior charts track a child’s behavior and reward positive desirable behavior. The reward can either be the sticker on the behavior chart or a treat that children receive when they earn enough stars. Decide on the required number of stars ahead of time and let the child know. The amount depends on the child’s age. Charts with only ten steps usually work best for kids age 3 to 5, while older kids typically need around 20 steps. We offer a variety of free behavior charts that you can download and print.

Why do behavior charts work?

Positive reinforcement is the best way to encourage and maintain good behavior. Children love to be praised and encouraged. A good behavior sticker chart ensures that we praise desirable behavior, which we otherwise might not have recognized.

How do you use these charts?

  • Show your children our selection of printable charts and let them choose one.
  • Download and print the chart of their choice.
  • Define “good behavior” and discuss it with your children. Make sure they understand how you would like them to behave and what kind of behavior you will reward with a star or sticker. For example, if your children come into your bed during the night, then explain to them that each night that they stay in their bed throughout the night, they will get a star.
  • When the chart is complete, acknowledge their achievement with a reward.
  • Make the process fun and enjoyable!

How do you customize the editable behavior charts?

If you have selected an editable behavior chart, then you can edit the text and add your own image.

  • Click on the editable behavior chart to open the chart maker.
  • You can make any color chart for kids since every element can be edited. You can make a weekly schedule, chore chart, sticker chart, etc.
  • Edit the text and add more text if you have anything else to add.
  • Add a photo.
  • Download your printable chart to your PC and print.

If the child has specific needs, then use the search bar to search for specific solutions such as an ODD behavior chart for kids with oppositional defiant disorder.

For what ages can these charts be used to promote moral behavior?

Behavior charts can be very efficient from age 3 until about age 7 or 8. The age of the child will determine the number of stars or steps on the chart. For younger kids up to age 5, we recommend a chart with 10 steps. Kids, ages 5 – 8, can cope with 20 steps.

How to develop and use a reward program

According to CDC , there are six steps:

Step 1: Decide what specific behaviors you want to reward

Pick a few specific actions that your child will clearly understand. For example, don’t write “behave well,” but rather “no hitting.” Only choose responses that your children are capable of and are suitable for their age.

Step 2: Decide on the reward

The reward should be something your child wants to earn and will enjoy. It doesn’t have to cost money. Getting the stickers on the chart can be the reward. If that will not work for your children, then decide on a reward when they earn a certain number of stickers such as going out for ice cream.

Step 3: Create a behavior chart

Select a behavior chart from this site. You can add pictures to any chart. Click on “add photo” and add a photo if your child cannot read yet. For example, instead of writing “tidy your room” add a photo of your child’s room when it is tidy.

Step 4: Explain the reward program to your child

Your children need to understand what they have to do to get a sticker on their behavior chart.

Step 5: Use the reward program

Remember to give them a sticker on their chart immediately after the behavior. This will ensure that they know exactly what they did to earn the reward.

Step 6: Slowly change the selected behavior or phase out the reward program

Reward your children often when you use the behavior chart. Over time, you will notice a change in their behavior. Once this new behavior has become a habit, you can either stop using the sticker chart template or start a new chart with new goals.

Should you take off stickers for bad behavior?

No. Never take away rewards your children have earned. Rewards that they have earned are theirs, and you should not take them away for misbehaving.

Make A Homework Chart To Keep Your Child On Track!

Inside: Make a homework chart to keep your child organized and stress-free. It can even increase overall motivation to get work done on time!

Child Homework Chart

Doing your homework after school is a right of passage. To this day, it remains a key educational component and a common part of a kid’s after school routine. But homework can quickly fall to the wayside in lieu of hanging out with friends, watching TV, and finding snacks in the kitchen. That’s where a homework chart comes in!

Most kids have a hard time finding the energy and motivation to get homework done. Then, the parent has to step in to ensure that the work actually gets done before the next school day. But with a homework chart, you can keep everything on track and actually improve motivation.

Better yet, you may never have to ask them to do their homework again!

Whether you’re just trying to get organized, looking for a solution to help a struggling child, or want to start off the school year strong, creating your own homework chart will kickstart a great education.

Why do kids struggle with homework.

You’ve probably heard it time and time again: that audible groan your kids make when you say it’s homework time. But how exactly did homework become the least favorite activity of every kid’s day?

  • Lack of motivation. Oftentimes, kids don’t understand why they need to continue to do more homework after a full day at school. They want all remaining hours of the day to be dedicated to relaxation and fun.
  • Lack of a good work environment. If a child doesn’t have a great place to do homework, they’re less likely to do it. Working from the couch, bed, or messy dining room table is going to have the same effect as a desk.
  • Time management. Even adults struggle with keeping up with everything on their to-do lists. Kids are still learning how to fit everything in and need a hand figuring out their personal schedules.
  • Too many distractions. The dog squeaks its ball, Mom does the dishes, the sister watches TV, and Dad mows the lawn. How is a kid supposed to get anything done!?
  • Mood swings. Kids have many big emotions and often don’t know how to handle them. When they don’t want to do homework, the mood just worsens until getting any homework done is completely off the table.

How can a homework chart help?

A homework chart may not fix all of the issues above, but it certainly helps quite a few of them! Time management is the most obvious fix as parents and kids can map out everything they need to get done and organize it over the course of the week.

Motivation may play the biggest factor in not wanting to do homework . Adding a homework chart allows them to visualize their goals for the day and week. When kids have a goal, they’re much more likely to resist the distractions and temptations that can arise during homework time.

When kids get involved in making their homework chart, it helps them assume more responsibility and control over their schedule. Kids really appreciate it when they feel heard and like to have input on how they spend their day. Yes, they need to do homework, but a chart allows them to fill in part of their day’s activities.

How to make a homework chart

Making a homework chart is going to look different for every child depending on their needs, age, and schedule. Below are some of the best tips to keep in mind when making a homework chart with your child.

Choose your planner type

The first step you will want to take is deciding which type of planner will work best for your kids. You can break up the homework chart by month, week, or daily. Young kids will have less homework and might only need a monthly chart. However, older kids may even need a daily homework chart where they can keep track of time.

If you’re unsure, weekly is the best place to start! It works well for every age group and allows you to set priorities and get organized for the week ahead.

A homework chart with subjects included is also another great option. In this case, you list out the days of the week on top as well as all the subjects down the side. This allows you to have room every day for each subject.

For the little ones, you can even make a giant visual schedule to hand on the wall. In this case, their day will probably look exactly the same every day. The visual schedule allows them to know what tasks to get done in the day amongst all the playing, napping, and eating!

Ask for their input

Kids are much more likely to get work done if they feel like it was their idea. So let it be their idea!

Make the homework chart together. At first, you may need to help guide them and teach them how to prioritize tasks. Eventually, they will become so good at it that you might not even need to help!

Letting them self-regulate their schedule and gain a little bit of independence will make them feel much more motivated and even accomplished.

Also ask them when they would like to do their homework, especially if you’re including times in their homework chart. They might have a preference. Some may want to do it right after school to get it over with while others would prefer dinner after they’ve eaten and had a break.

Note upcoming tasks

Homework charts try to avoid procrastination. In a homework chart, you will want to include immediate and regular homework. But, you also want to plan ahead for upcoming tasks and larger assignments. Learning to juggle multiple assignments with different due dates is a highly valuable skill for kids to learn as they get older.

Kids can learn how to prioritize their work. What needs to get done right now? What can I do to get ahead for the future? If I don’t have work due tomorrow, what can I work on instead?

Try to include a notes section on your homework chart so that you can list all your upcoming tasks. The last thing you want to happen is a mad rush over a sudden due date! Then both you and your child will be up past midnight gluing a solar system diorama together.

Make the homework chart visible

Place the homework chart in a place that makes it easy for everyone in the house to see it. Yes, everyone ! This can help keep the distractions to a minimum.

If everyone in the house knows when it’s homework time, then they know not to bug the working kid with other tasks or conversations.

Keep noise and distractions to a minimum during these hours. The child may not even be reachable during this time!

This also allows you to keep track of their work and make sure they are sticking to the schedule. You can help keep them accountable or make adjustments when necessary.

Offer rewards

A reward incentive may be the answer for kids who really struggle to get their homework done despite how often you remind them. Allow them to cross off the tasks in their homework chart or the day itself to show that they got everything done. If they get everything done in a week (or day, month, whatever you decide), then they can get a reward.

You know what kind of reward would work best for your kids. It could be getting their allowance, a sticker as a reward, their favorite snack, or an end-of-the-week activity such as a movie night.

Personalize it

To keep your kids engaged with their homework chart, ask them to personalize it! When making the homework chart, bring out all the craft supplies.

Use fun paper, stationery, stickers, pencil crayons, and more to customize the chart.

The fun colors can also help to keep the homework chart more organized. Use different colored inks for different subjects and tasks.

kids homework routine homework chart

When you make a homework chart with your kids, ask them to set a goal for the week. Kids need to have personal meaning with their homework. If they view it as an important part of their day and something with purpose, they are much more likely to get it done.

When setting a goal, include one short-term one for the week. It can be studying for an upcoming math test , getting the first part of a project done, finishing a book, etc. Rather than just relying on individual tasks, they can see how a little bit of work a day helps accomplish something larger.

In addition to a short-term goal, they should have a long-term goal. How is their homework helping them reach their personal goals? Will homework improve their grades for college? Will learning French allow them to travel and spend time in France one day?

Setting a goal can help to enhance this responsibility and motivation. Their homework will become more interesting and relevant to them and they will have more initiative to do it on their own.

Dow rises to close at fresh record, S&P 500 hits all-time high: Live updates

The S&P 500 stabilized Friday after hitting another record as investors wrapped the week on a high note.

The S&P 500 inched higher by 0.03% to close at 5,088.80. Earlier Friday, the broad market index broke above 5,100 for the first time. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 62.42 points, or 0.16%, also reaching a fresh record and closing at an all-time high of 39,131.53. The Nasdaq Composite lost 0.28% to close at 15,996.82, but had notched a fresh 52-week high earlier in the session.

All three major averages registered winning weeks. The S&P 500 advanced 1.66%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 1.4% this week. The Dow is up 1.3% for the period.

"The question from here is do investors shake that momentum? We've run up so far, so quickly. It might not make a lot of sense to chase that type of momentum," said Charlie Ripley, senior investment strategist at Allianz Investment Management.

"Obviously, we haven't seen quite the momentum as we have from technology stocks...I think that does pose some risks in terms of where the index goes ultimately, because clearly everything's front-loaded into the technology shares," he added.

Wall Street is coming off a monster day as Nvidia shares roared on strong quarterly results , leading the chipmaker to briefly surpass a $2 trillion valuation. On Thursday, the S&P 500 had its best day since January 2023, while the Nasdaq Composite popped nearly 3% for its best session since February 2023. The 30-stock Dow gained about 1.2%.

On the corporate earnings front, Block surged 16.1% after fourth-quarter revenue surpassed Wall Street estimates. Carvana climbed 32.1% after the used car retailer said it expects retail units to grow in 2024.

S&P 500 is little changed Friday, but ends the week higher

Here's how the major indexes closed on Friday:

  • The  S&P 500  gained 0.03% to 5,088.80.
  • The  Dow Jones Industrial Average  added 62.42 points, or 0.16%, to 39,131.53.
  • The  Nasdaq Composite  lost 0.28% to 15,996.82.

Investors should 'buy the dip' in big tech, wealth manager says

AI-adjacent big tech stocks have propelled the equity market to new highs, but there could still be more room ahead for gains.

In fact, UBS Private Wealth Management's Greg Marcus believes that investors should take advantage of market volatility to buy into big tech.

"There will likely be pullbacks and volatility over the next few months and we are supportive of the buy the dip mentality when it comes to big tech," he said.

Besides being beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence theme, Marcus also pointed out that many big tech firms have strong balance sheets and earnings growth potential, characteristics that can weather a higher interest rate environment.

However, the wealth manager also underscored that the market rally is likely to broaden in 2024.

"While we expect a continued resilience in tech stocks, we also expect a less dramatic, albeit still heavy, focus on the Magnificent 7," he said.

Consumer stapes sector leads S&P 500 sector gains for the week

Consumer staples is the S&P 500's biggest outperforming sector this week, rising around 2.2%.

Hormel Foods , Kraft Heinz and Conagra Brands are all up more than 4% and are leading the sector's gains.

The tech sector is close behind consumer staples, and is up about 2.1% week to date.

Nvidia has jumped 9.5% in the past week, followed by Micron Technology and Broadcom up 7.8% and 4.5% each.

Carvana's surge is hurting short sellers

The sharp rebound for Carvana is burning short-sellers who bet the stock would continue to fall.

Shares of the online auto retailer jumped 32% on Friday and are now up more than 50% over the past month. According to a note from Ihor Dusaniwsky, managing director at S3 Partners, the stock was heavily bet against by hedge funds, which are now likely suffering big losses.

"CVNA shorts are now down -$591.8 million in 2024 year-to-date mark-to-market losses, -37.2%," the note said.

The latest move higher came after Carvana's fourth quarter report. The company said its gross profit more than doubled year over year during the quarter, while its net income margin improved but remained negative.

Dow heads for winning week

The Dow is on pace to end this week up about 1.5%, lifted by a group of rallying stocks.

Johnson & Johnson , Walmart and Coca-Cola led the 30-stock index higher, with each adding more than 3% this week. In all, about four out of every five Dow members are on track to finish the week up.

Still, the laggards somewhat capped gains for the blue-chip index. Most notably, Disney was the worst performing Dow stock this week with a slide of more than 4%. Boeing was the next biggest loser, slipping over 1.5%.

This performance marks a return to green for the Dow after finishing last week down 0.1%.

UBS Wealth Management raises its year-end S&P 500 target

UBS Global Wealth Management has lifted its end-of-year price target on the S&P 500 to 5,200 from 5,100 to reflect a more favorable environment despite recent mixed economic signals.

"We think the backdrop for US equities remains supportive, driven by healthy economic growth, moderating inflation, a Fed that's pivoting to rate cuts, and a surge in AI investment," the firm said in a note from the chief investment office Thursday.

"After the [more than] 20% rally since the October low, some sentiment and positioning indicators are starting to become elevated, which could lead to a modest pullback in the coming months," the team added. "We maintain a neutral preference for U.S. equities in our tactical asset allocation and highlight that there may be better opportunities to add to equity positions."

Rivian slides as UBS turns bearish

Rivian fell more than 1% before the bell on Friday following a rare double-downgrade from UBS.

Analyst Joseph Spak lowered his rating to sell from buy and whittled his price target down to $8 from $24. Spak's new price target shows shares of the electric vehicle maker could fall 30.1% from Thursday's close.

"We had been optimistic on RIVN's product and brand ultimately winning out," he told clients in a Thursday note. "But a rapidly changing EV backdrop causes us to reassess our demand view and makes RIVN's current strategy quite onerous on the ramp to profitability and cash flow."

DraftKings pops after Barclays moves off sidelines

Shares of DraftKings rallied more than 3% in Friday premarket trading after Barclays turned bullish.

Markets pare back anticipation for interest rate cuts

Traders have backed off the anticipation for aggressive interest rate cuts this year, now pricing in moves that align with prior indications from Federal Reserve officials.

The full-year outlook is now for three quarter-percentage point cuts, taking the benchmark fed funds rate down to 4.5%-4.75%, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool, which measures futures pricing. The gauge is putting the chance of three cuts at right around 60%.

While markets are anticipating the first cut to come in June, there's a rising probability — around 35% as of Friday morning — that the central bank might even wait until July. That contrasts with pricing in early January that had been pointing to cuts starting in March eventually totaling five or six for the year.

StanChart shares rise after $1 billion share buyback, higher annual profit

Hong Kong-listed shares of Standard Chartered rose 2.8% by afternoon trading after the company announced a $1 billion share repurchase program.

StanChart also reported 2023 pretax profit of $5.09 billion, up about 18% year-on-year.

The bank earns most of its revenue in Asia.

"We have increased full year dividends, up 50%, and have announced a new $1 billion share buyback, bringing our total shareholder distributions to $5.5 billion since January 2022," the company said in a statement.

The bank also reported a $850 million impairment charge due to its stake in Chinese lender Bohai Bank.

China property price declines narrow month-on-month in January

Chinese ADRs are still 'far away' from drawing investor confidence: Mizuho Americas

Declines in China's commercial housing sales prices narrowed on a month-on-month basis, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics .

The official data showed sales prices of newly built commercial houses in first-tier cities fell 0.3% in January from the previous month, with declines narrowing by 0.1 percentage points from the previous month.

Prices continued to drop from last year, falling 0.5% from a year ago or 0.4 percentage points more than the previous month.

The January data comes after the country's troubled property market recorded its worst declines in new home prices in nearly nine years at the end of last year.

China's CSI 300 added 0.2%, set to rise for the ninth straight session if gains hold till the end of the trading day.

Korean won falls a day after Bank of Korea decision

The Korean won eased against the U.S. dollar on Friday, a day after the Bank of Korea held interest rates.

The won dipped 0.2%. The BOK held interest rates unchanged at 3.5% as widely expected on Thursday.

Goldman Sachs said Thursday that the central bank could be the first to cut rates.

Analysts at Commerzbank said "diverging views within the board on the direction of rates could also add to volatility. Two board members are also due to be replaced. This could change the dynamics on the board, depending on who will be appointed."

Stocks in Korea rose, with the Kospi adding 0.5% after the Nvidia's blockbuster results helped boost semiconductor stocks globally .

Nvidia stole the show, but Thursday’s rally was fairly broad

Nvidia 's 16% jump headlined Thursday's market action, but the major averages saw sizeable gains across much of the board.

The S&P 500 closed 2.11% higher, and the Nasdaq Composite added nearly 3%. Both indexes saw their best day in more than a year.

While tech was the leading sector with a 4.35% gain, industrials and health care each gained more than 1% and hit fresh record closes. Quanta Services was the big winner in industrials, rising more than 10%, while Moderna popped 13.5% to help lift health care. Utilities was the one losing sector, down 0.77%.

In another sign of how broad the rally was Thursday, the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) touched a 52-week high and closed nearly 1% higher.

Beyoncé becomes first Black woman to top country charts with "Texas Hold 'Em"

February 21, 2024 / 6:13 PM EST / CBS News

Beyoncé on Wednesday became the first Black woman to score a No. 1 hit in the history of Billboard's Hot Country Songs, after " Texas Hold 'Em " debuted at the top of the chart.

"Texas Hold 'Em," a twangy, feel-good ode to the pop superstar's home state, and the lead single off her forthcoming eighth studio album, dropped during the Super Bowl , alongside another track titled " 16 Carriages ," immediately after a Verizon commercial starring Beyoncé.

The new album, which appears to be country, will be released on March 29 and was described as "act ii" of the three-act project that began with Beyoncé's critically acclaimed  "Renaissance" album , which she released in 2022.

Wednesday's milestone marked a cultural shift for country music, a genre often seen as exclusive and that for decades has had a fraught relationship with artists of color. With "Texas Hold 'Em," Beyoncé finally trumped the record set by Linda Martell more than 50 years ago, when her song "Color Him Father," which peaked at No. 22, became the highest-ranking single by a Black woman on the country charts, according to Billboard.

Beyoncé also became the first woman to have topped both the country and R&B/hip-hop charts since the genre song charts were launched in 1958, Billboard reported, adding that she joins Morgan Wallen, Justin Bieber, Billy Ray Cyrus and Ray Charles as the only acts to have led both charts.

"Texas Hold 'Em" also debuted at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart, right below Jack Harlow's "Lovin on Me" and right above Kanye West and Ty Dollar $ign's new song "Carnival." It marks her 22nd top-ten single on the general charts, Billboard reported, signaling no end in sight to the singer's adventurous, indefatigable and, by most accounts, legendary 27-year career.

Beyoncé's bold foray into country almost immediately sparked controversy, after KYKC-FM, a country radio radio station in Oklahoma, initially declined to play the artist. The station manager later told CBS News he hadn't known Beyoncé had released two country songs and confirmed he had added "Texas Hold 'Em" to the station's playlist.

"We have always celebrated Cowboy Culture growing up in Texas," Tina Knowles, Beyoncé's mother, wrote on Instagram alongside a montage of Beyoncé over the years wearing cowboy hats, responding to allegations the singer had made an abrupt or exploitative genre jump.

"We also always understood that it was not just about it belonging to White culture only. In Texas there is a huge Black cowboy culture," Tina Knowles added, noting that she had taken Beyoncé and her sister Solange to rodeos annually when they were children, adorned in Western clothing. "It was definitely part of our culture growing up."

Beyoncé becomes first Black woman to top Billboard’s Country songs chart with Texas Hold ‘Em

Beyoncé is also the first woman to top both the Hot Country Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hip Songs charts since the lists began in 1958

Beyoncé has become the first Black woman to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, after her track Texas Hold ‘Em debuted at No 1.

In a genre whose relationship to Black artists has often proved controversial , the track marked one of several historical achievements when weekly chart rankings refreshed on Tuesday.

Texas Hold ‘Em – released simultaneously with the single 16 Carriages in a surprise album announcement during the Super Bowl – is Beyoncé’s first time topping the country charts.

It has also made her the second solo female artist – with no accompanying featured artists – to debut at No 1, after Taylor Swift achieved the feat in 2021 with her re-recordings of Love Story and All Too Well.

Beyoncé is also the first woman to top both the Hot Country Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hip Songs charts since the lists began in 1958. Justin Bieber, Billy Ray Cyrus, Ray Charles and Morgan Wallen are the only other artists who have led both charts.

The Hot Country Songs chart is a “multi-metric” chart which combines US sales, streams, and radio airplay, much like Billboard’s primary Hot 100 chart.

Tuesday’s charts reflected the seven days leading up to 15 February – which means Texas Hold ‘Em, released 11 February, achieved its slots after just four days of tracking.

In that time, it was streamed 19.2m times and downloaded 39,000 times in the US, according to entertainment data company Luminate. It debuted at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart, whereas the superstar’s other new track 16 Carriages debuted at No. 38 on the Hot 100 and No. 9 on Hot Country Songs.

Both singles will appear on Beyoncé’s second instalment of her Renaissance trilogy, set for release on 29 March.

The country chart achievements come after an online firestorm last week around Texas Hold ‘Em’s categorisation as a country track.

A country radio station in Oklahoma initially declined to play a request for Beyoncé’s new single, though they later changed their tune after a viral campaign on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The station said that they hadn’t yet been served the file for the track from Beyoncé’s label when they received the request. Texas Hold ‘Em is now officially being promoted to country radio, according to Billboard.

The song has become Beyoncé’s first appearance on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, where it debuted at No. 54. Unlike Hot Country Songs, Country Airplay measures only radio play.

Country music’s relationship to Black artists has often sparked debate. In a high-profile example from 2019, rapper Lil Nas X’s viral country-trap fusion Old Town Road was removed from Billboard’s Hot Country Songs after it topped the chart.

Chart compilers claimed it wasn’t country enough – despite its banjo instrumentation and lyrical content about horse riding.

“While Old Town Road incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version,” Billboard wrote at the time.

In 2016, Beyoncé’s heavily country-inspired track Daddy Lessons was rejected by the Recording Academy’s country music committee, making it ineligible for country Grammys.

She later played the song at the Country Music Association awards with the Dixie Chicks in a surprise performance that sparked a fresh round of discourse around country music’s politics and ambiguous classifications.

Beyoncé Becomes First Black Woman to Top Billboard Country Chart

Beyoncé’s new country single “Texas Hold ’Em” reached No. 1 on the Billboard country songs chart this week, making her the first Black female artist to hold the top spot.

Beyoncé’s other single, “16 Carriages,” released simultaneously on Feb. 11, also debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard country chart. The songs reached No. 2 and No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Texas Hold ’Em” has already drawn more than 19 million streams, and “16 Carriages” has 10.3 million streams.

Historically, Black artists have struggled to gain recognition in the genre of country music, a field often dominated by white male singers. But the sudden success of Beyoncé’s country singles comes at a time when Black women have started to receive acclaim within that realm. At last year’s Country Music Awards, Tracy Chapman won song of the year for “Fast Car,” which topped country charts three decades after it was released, thanks to a cover by Luke Combs. Black female country artists like Mickey Guyton and Brittney Spencer have also gained popularity in recent years .

Beyoncé is the first woman to top both the Hot Country Songs chart and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart since they were established in 1958, according to Billboard . Both Beyoncé singles are part of her upcoming album, a country-themed follow-up to “Renaissance,” which she referred to as “Act II.” The full album, announced during a Verizon ad that aired during the Super Bowl, is expected to be released March 29.

An earlier version of a capsule summary with this article misstated which chart Beyoncé became the first Black woman to hold the top spot on. It was Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, not its Country Airplay chart. The error was repeated in the article.
