Thanksgiving and Turkey Math, Science, and Social Studies Activities
Roll a Turkey Game
Students need a blank sheet of paper. They work in small groups and take turns rolling a die to make a complete turkey, including a body, a head, a face with a wattle, 2 legs, 2 wings and 4 feathers. The first one to finish drawing his turkey is the winner!
You can grab the Roll a Turkey game from the Printables @ A to Z Teacher Stuff. This printable also includes a dotted head and body. This would be helpful for the students if they roll a 3, 4, 5, or 6 before they’ve drawn the turkey head or a body. It gives them a point of reference to draw their own wings, feet, face and feathers.
Counting Corn Booklet
Have children make corn counting books by gluing corn kernels on pages that have the numbers 1 through 5 written on them.
Bean and Corn Patterns
Use several varieties of dried beans and corn (or Indian corn) kernels to create patterns.
Popcorn and Cranberry Patterns
Give each child a large needle and heavyweight thread to string popcorn and cranberries in a pattern. Hang the strings outdoors in trees for birds to eat.
Favorite Thanksgiving Foods Graph
Create a class graph by letting children select their favorite food, such as turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberries or pumpkin pie.
Favorite Popcorn Flavor Graph
At this time of year you can buy those cans of popcorn with 3 different flavors of popcorn in them. Taste each flavor of popcorn and graph the results. Use the popcorn bag picture on http://www.abcteach.com for them to color and label with their favorite kind and then do a graph on the floor.
Least Favorite Thanksgiving Foods Graph
After Thanksgiving at home or a school feast, create a class graph by letting children select their least favorite (I Didn’t Like It) food, such as turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberries or pumpkin pie.
Turkey Glyph
Turkey Glyph: Printable for this activity
Students follow these directions to color their turkey:
Boy = orange beak Girl = yellow beak
Has siblings = yellow feet No siblings = red feet
Likes to eat turkey = brown body Doesn’t like to eat turkey = black body
Color the turkey’s eyes the color of your eyes.
Now, cut out the turkey and glue it on a piece of construction paper. Choose your favorite color of paper. Color and cut out the feathers. You will need the same amount of feathers as your age.
Put these turkeys on the bulletin board and post this note to ask visitors to locate a student’s turkey from the clues.
Can You Find My Turkey?
My name is ________________.
I am a __________.
I _____________________ siblings.
My favorite color is _______________.
I ____________________ to eat turkey.
My eyes are _________________.
I am ______ years old.
You can find a printable turkey and another turkey glyph idea here .
Do You Like The Butter We Made?
After shaking cream to make butter and tasting it, we used tally marks to count the number of children who liked the butter and the number who didn’t like its taste. Then we converted the tally marks into a graph.
Incorporate a plant/seeds unit by planting a corn seed, popcorn, and candy corn. Make predictions on what will grow and then watch their progress! Some kids will actually think a candy corn tree may grow from the candy corn. After a few weeks make a Venn diagram comparison of between real corn and candy corn.
Put an ear of corn in a pot filled with potting soil half covered with the soil. It will grow. Be sure to use field corn or Indian corn.
Or just take an ear of Indian corn and place it in a pie tin with water. The kernels of corn actually start growing!
Social Studies
Mayflower Re-enactment
This was an idea from Sharon in Florida. Nine classes combined to create a student-formed Mayflower.
Making the Mayflower (the boys):
Line up 2 rows of boys to be the boat. If you have an odd number of boys, let the odd one be the front of the boat. Have each set of 2 boys (standing side-by-side) lock opposite arms from boy 1’s shoulder to boy 2’s shoulder. Then each boy holds onto the shoulder of the boy directly in front of him.
THIS MAKES THE MAYFLOWER BOAT.
Boarding the Mayflower (the girls):
The girls in your class are the Pilgrims. Have the girls crawl under the archway the boys have made with their arms. They will be inside the boat.
Then the sea gets a LITTLE ROUGH and the “Mayflower” GENTLY rocks back and forth. The boat can move VERY SLOWLY FORWARD so the “Pilgrims” have time to move up too, going to America.
Then the “Mayflower” gently bumps into PLYMOUTH ROCK (a cabinet, chair or table from your room). The “Pilgrims” get off (crawl out from tunnel made by boys archway). The boys then become the Native Americans and greet the Pilgrims.
THEN ALL CHILDREN PLAYED ON THE PLAYGROUND.

Thanksgiving Origins
Thanksgiving Origins teaches students about the origins of Thanksgiving. Students will learn how Thanksgiving began, how it evolved, and the lasting impact of its beginnings today. This lesson plan delves into the role of the Native Americans in the first Thanksgiving, what foods they served, and how it became a national holiday.
The “Options for Lesson” section of this lesson lists suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One option, for instance, is to add prices to the food items in the activity.
Description
Additional information, what our thanksgiving origins lesson plan includes.
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Thanksgiving Origins teaches students all about the beginning of a holiday they probably celebrate with their family every year: Thanksgiving! With this lesson, students will learn all about the first Thanksgiving, how it became a national holiday, and more. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the yellow box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. For this lesson, the only supplies that you need are the handouts. You can prepare for this lesson ahead of time by pairing students for the activity and copying the handouts.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in it. One option is to add prices to the food items in the activity and give students a budget to spend on the meals they create. You could also serve some of the actual foods that people would have had at the first Thanksgiving. Another idea is to ask parents to bring in a special food that they usually serve on Thanksgiving. Or you could have one new parent send in food every day for the month of November, which can be designated as “Thanksgiving Month.” You could invite a Native American or expert on a specific tribe’s culture to speak to the class. One last idea is to study words and place names with Native American roots, such as many of the state names.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. It notes that there are many additional resources that you can use to supplement your lesson, including many informative videos from the History Channel that you and your class could view during this lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you prepare for this lesson.
THANKSGIVING ORIGINS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Origins of thanksgiving.
The Thanksgiving Origins lesson plan includes three content pages. The first section of this lesson gives a brief overview of the history of the celebration and how it became a national holiday in the United States. Thanksgiving is an annual holiday in the United States that happens on the fourth Thursday in November every year. Students will learn that the editor, Sarah Josepha Hale, of a popular women’s magazine was one of the biggest advocates for making Thanksgiving a national holiday.
Students will also learn that Abraham Lincoln was the president who finally made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. The holiday did not always include turkey, pumpkin pie, football, and days out of school. In fact, when Lincoln made it a holiday more than 250 years after the first Thanksgiving, he declared that it was a holiday to give thanks for “general blessings.” This is still true today. Many families all over the United States gather on the holiday to give thanks and celebrate with friends, family, and a big meal.
First Thanksgiving
The next section of this lesson goes into detail about the first Thanksgiving. The first Thanksgiving occurred in 1621, more than 250 years before it would become an official holiday. This section describes the who, what, why, when, how, and where of the first version of the holiday. Students will learn that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated by about 50 English Puritans, the Pilgrims, and about 90 Wampanoag people. The Wampanoag people had lived on the land for over 12,000 years!
The first feast was three days long. It kicked off with settlers hunting for the food for the celebration. The Wampanoag people thought that the settlers were preparing for war. However, when they visited the Pilgrims and found out that they were preparing a feast, they gathered their own food as well and joined the festivities.
The people ate deer, corn, shellfish, duck, goose, lobster, eel, and other fish, but no turkey or pumpkin pie! This celebration happened in what is now southeastern Massachusetts and eastern Rhode Island. Several other states like Florida, Texas, Maine, and Virginia also claim to have held the first Thanksgiving, but the official first Thanksgiving happened in Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
Thanksgiving Myths
Students will then learn the truth about some popular Thanksgiving myths. Though many paintings and drawings of the Pilgrims depict them wearing silver buckles on their shoes and black clothing, they actually wore bright and colorful clothing during this time. The Native Americans, on the other hand, did not wear blankets on their shoulders or the large feathered headdresses painters often depicted them in. It’s much more likely that they wore moccasins, deerskin leggings, jewelry, and body paint instead.
Finally, the settlers did not actually call themselves Pilgrims. Historians created this term later to describe them. At this time, they called themselves either Puritans or Separatists. Despite the facts and the myths, we widely agree that Thanksgiving is a celebration with family and friends. It’s a way to give thanks for our blessings.
THANKSGIVING ORIGINS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Thanksgiving Origins lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. Each worksheet will help students solidify their grasp of the lesson content and material they learned. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet. These worksheets will test student’s understanding of the lesson material.
THANKSGIVING FOODS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
Students will work in pairs to create three Thanksgiving meals. They will use foods from two lists: Thanksgiving foods from 1621 and Thanksgiving foods from today. They have to include a certain number of drinks, meats, fish, vegetables, and more for each meal. The three meals they will create are a 1621 meal, today’s meal, and a meal that includes food items from both time periods. Students can also work alone or in groups of three for this activity if you want them to do so.
THANKSGIVING ORIGINS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
For the practice worksheet, there is a list of 25 total statements. For the first 20 statements, students will circle the correct choice from the two options listed next to each statement. The final 5 statements require students to determine whether the sentence is true or false and circle the correct response.
ACROSTIC POEM HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
Students will create an acrostic poem using the letters in Thanksgiving. For each letter, they will write something they are thankful for at home, school, or with friends and family. This assignment will allow students to think more deeply about the meaning of the holiday. They’ll also reflect on the things that they are thankful for.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet. Answer keys are not provided for either the activity worksheet or the homework assignment. Student’s answers for both of those worksheets will vary. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.

Engaging Ideas for Teaching about Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a great time to build in so many academic skills. Whether you're looking for social studies activities that teach students about the first Thanksgiving or you need a fun writing activity to keep students engaged as your break approaches, you'll find lots of great ideas of ways to keep your upper elementary students learning in the days leading up to break.
What you'll find on this page:
5 Simple Activities to Use Before Thanksgiving Break
The week leading up to Thanksgiving break can be a challenging one for students and teachers alike. The excitement of the holidays is palpable, and there are often schedule changes that make things even more hectic. I created this post to share some of my favorite Thanksgiving activities to do in the classroom.
These ideas were selected because they are low-prep and perfect for adding to your November lesson plans, even at the last minute. Check them out now!
1. Thanksgiving Webquest
Teaching students about the first Thanksgiving doesn't have to involve a lot of time or prep. Scholastic has an amazing Thanksgiving webquest that is chock full of interesting facts and information.
This is a great opportunity to teach and practice note-taking skills, and I created a simple flipbook that helps my students keep everything in one place.
The great thing about this webquest is that it has a ton of activities and short video clips that are really detailed and educational. Students learn what the Mayflower was really like. They compare and contrast the life of the Wampanoags and Pilgrims. There's even a section about what was really eaten at the first Thanksgiving.
My students were so engaged that I actually ended up adding an extra flap to allow them to record all the interesting facts that didn't quite fit elsewhere.
Here's a picture of my flipbook from last year.
You can get a free copy of my flipbook template (in two different printing formats) by clicking the button below.
2. How to Cook a Turkey – Procedural Writing
Thanksgiving is a great time to teach a quick procedural writing unit, especially if you work at a campus where many students start their break early. While many districts are moving away from “how-to” writing, this easy project is a great way to engage students without having those students who have left early miss out on core writing instruction. I love to use this easy writing project the week before Thanksgiving because the kids are so excited about it they forget they are working.
The whole activity takes about a week, but it is really laid out step-by-step so my kiddos who need to make it up can do a lot of it during their free work time.
The students start by brainstorming using a web graphic organizer before they begin outlining their steps.
The outcomes are often quite hilarious, and it is a good opportunity to discuss procedural texts. We storyboard the steps before drafting, and then students revise their working using the editing and revising checklist.
Once students are done revising their first draft, they are ready to create their procedural mini-book. These end up being absolutely hilarious and so fun to read.
Some students will cook their turkey for 30 minutes at 100 degrees. Others decide 5 hours at 500 degrees seems more reasonable. One year I had a student who had a sponge bath for the turkey as one of their steps.
I am sure you can see why this is one of my favorite writing pieces to read each year.
If you want to try it out in your classroom you can grab the file on Teachers Pay Teachers by clicking the button below.
3. Create a Thankful Banner as a Thanksgiving Activity for Writing
If you're looking for a fun way to decorate your classroom around Thanksgiving. This banner might be the perfect solution.
This is another easy-to-implement writing project, where students write about something they are thankful for. String the pieces together to create a beautiful banner to display in your classroom or as a hallway display.
Learn more about this project or purchase it here: I am Thankful Writing Banner Craft
4. Turkey-themed rounding and estimation math center
When students leave early for break, it can be frustrating to try to figure out how to balance moving forward with your lesson plans and keeping these students from developing gaps.
One solution is to use the week before Thanksgiving break as a way to allow students to review previously taught skills. Rounding and estimation, for example, are often taught in October. That means your students will likely need a refresher by November.
I created a turkey-themed math station that gives students a chance to get some extra practice with these skills. It is a fun way to build some holiday fun into your November lesson plans without sacrificing skill practice. Click here to learn more about this Thanksgiving Math Center.
5. Learn about Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
This one may seem a little silly, but students LOVE to learn about this parade. Try reading the book Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet , and then give your students time to brainstorm and sketch their own idea for a parade float.
If you've got time, you can even have them create miniature models of their float using shoe boxes or balloons. Students love Thanksgiving activities that involve creativity! There are also several good Youtube videos about the history of the parade. You can preview them to see which might be best for your students.

What do you teach as Thanksgiving approaches?
It was so fun sharing my favorite holiday activities with you. Now it is your turn! How do you spice up your classroom the last few days before the break?

Key Facts & Information
In the united states.
- It is believed that the Plymouth colonists first celebrated Thanksgiving in 1612 and shared a harvest feast with the Wampanoag Indians .
- More than two centuries after the first celebration, Americans considered Thanksgiving as one of the important holidays.
- Many children grow up learning that Thanksgiving is an important holiday in countries like the United States and Canada – this is true, but that does not mean other countries around the world don’t celebrate something similar.
- Since Thanksgiving is similar to a harvest festival, it is something that is celebrated worldwide, just on different days.
- Thanksgiving is very similar in the United States, but dates back much further than in Canada (as the United States is a much older country than Canada).
- Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November and originated as a harvest festival.
- As with Canada, the United States gives generously to its poor and homeless citizens and provides food and often a hot, cooked Thanksgiving meal for them.
- Foods commonly served include most of the same foods as in Canada.
- Pumpkin pie is a very popular dessert to indulge in after Thanksgiving dinner in both countries.
- In Canada, Thanksgiving is a three-day weekend with the main celebration on the second Monday in October.
- The first Canadian Thanksgiving Day was celebrated on April 5, 1872 as a celebration of the Prince of Wales’ recovery from a major illness.
- Parliament declared Thanksgiving to be an annual holiday, and the official date was set in 1957.
- In French (one of Canada’s two official languages), Thanksgiving translates to Action de grace.
- Foods commonly served include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, and other autumn vegetables.
AROUND THE WORLD
- In Germany , Thanksgiving is called “Erntedankfest,” and is celebrated in early October.
- It is similar to American Thanksgiving, and it also includes large dinners made with harvest vegetables, as well as a parade (similar to the Macy’s parade in the U.S.).
- In German churches, the service includes an observance, some singing, and the presenting of the “harvest crown” to a “harvest queen.”
- Labor Thanksgiving Day is celebrated annually in Japan on the 23rd of November to celebrate labor and production, as well as to give thanks to one another.
- It is a national holiday and was adopted during the American occupation after World War II .
- Many children in Japan draw pictures on the holiday and give them to neighborhood policemen to thank them for their service to the community.
- Korea celebrates a day of thanks called “Chuseok,” which occurs in late September.
- Families celebrate this by telling stories, eating food, and paying their respects to elders.
- Typically, a dish called “Songpyeon” is eaten, which consists of rice kneaded into small cakes and filled with red beans, chestnuts, and other autumn ingredients.
- People celebrate by dancing, wrestling, and feasting.
- Rome’s version of Thanksgiving is a harvest festival called “Cerelia.” It is a day to honor the Goddess of Corn, Ceres. Cerelia is celebrated on October 4th every year.
- It is customary to feast on fruits, grains, and meat, as well as partake in music, dancing, and parades.
- The foods produced for Cerelia are a symbol of thanks from the Romans .
- In Ghana, “Homowo” is celebrated to give thanks in August and September. Ceremonies for this festival include a procession of chiefs through the major roads in the area, finely dressed. “Homowo” means “hooting at hunger.”
- Newly harvested crops are “blessed” and the people who eat them are purified before consuming them.
- The Chinese version of Thanksgiving is called “Chung Ch’ui,” also referred to as the August Moon Festival.
- It is a 3-day celebration that occurs in the middle of August and sees Chinese families celebrating the end of the harvest season with a roast pig and mooncakes, symbols of family unity and perfection.
- The Chinese also give their cakes to friends and family.
- In the Southern parts of India , people celebrate their harvest at the Pongal festival. This festival takes place in January.
- The festival is named after a sweet rice dish of the same name, which consists of boiled rice with milk, clarified butter, and jaggery (a mix of palm sugar and cane juice). Typically, Pongal is a community feast where neighbors come together to share crops and give thanks.
- Since many Pilgrims who migrated to the United States were born in the Netherlands, their records were kept in the Netherlands .
- To commemorate this, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated each year on the morning of the American Thanksgiving Day in Pieterskerk (a Gothic church in Leiden).
