You have to consider certain things while designing your project display board. For example,

* The background is very important. You can use any board or paper for the background, but keep in mind that the white colour needs to be bright.

* Use colour contrast. Use colours that are in contrast with each other. For example, you can use a black background with white-coloured text.

* Consider your theme. If your project is related to space, then consider using a space theme for your project display board.

* Use pictures. Pictures give your project display board a personalized touch.

* Include important information. Include information regarding the topic, as well as contact information.

A science fair project display board is a large sheet of paper, poster board, or foam core used to display information about an experiment in a science fair.

The size of the board should

be at least 36″ x 48″.

The dimensions of the science fair board should be 2 feet wide by 3 feet long, and this allows for ample space to cover all the details and diagrams needed to present the research at an exhibition level.

Most science fair display boards have a 4′ by 10′ layout, which gives you plenty of room to cram all your data, photos, and drawings. But, if you want to pack in more information or a larger display board for a big project, there are alternatives.

One approach is to make the board out of the poster board. Posterboard comes in 2′ by 3′ sheets. You can arrange the sheets end to end to make a 12′ by 36′ display board. You don’t have to put these sheets together, though, and you can just join them at their corners and cut your display board to size.

You can also make a display board out of foam core. Foamcore comes in 2′ by 3′ sheets, too. You can buy it at most office supply stores. But, as with poster board, you don’t have to put these sheets together to make a display board. You can join them at the corners, cut your board to size, and glue the sheets together.

The standard scientific board size is arbitrary.

(It was originally called the Lincoln Board.) But it’s arbitrary in the same way that a dusty tube of paint is arbitrary. The colour you paint with isn’t important; what’s important is what you paint.

The rectangular board is better for making things. You can make almost anything rectangular, including mazes, making rectangular boards better for displaying science fair projects.

Once you’ve selected the perfect science display board, you have one final task: setting up the display.

First, find blank poster board (or foam core) in sizes appropriate for your project. You’ll need at least a 24×36-inch poster board for your display board’s background (this is called a “background board”).

Then, find an image file or paper printout of your project. You’ll need to “posterize” this printout or image for use as your display board background. Posterize simply means shrinking or stretching it to fit within the boundaries of the poster board. The image below shows how you can do this:

Now, place the background board on a flat surface.

Center your printout or image on the board, and trim any excess.

Next, tape the printout or image to the board.

Then, tape the poster board to a flat surface (such as a table or countertop).

Finally, tape the decorative border (if applicable) to the board.

You now have your display board.

One simple rule to remember: Don’t crowd your display board.

Project display boards often serve a dual purpose. On the one hand, they provide a space for showcasing projects, but on the other, they serve as a gathering space for students and families.

Here are some tips to make the most of your display board, whether you’re hosting or attending:

1)  Placement is crucial.  Make sure there’s room to move around the board and that it’s possible to read everything on it. Most boards should be 18 to 24 inches high and 36 to 48 inches wide.

2 ) Color counts.  Colour helps differentiate projects. If you’re planning on hanging your display board, consider the colour contrast. Black text on dark backgrounds is easier to read than dark text on light backgrounds.

3)  What goes on the board?  Consider the length of your project. A 15-minute project should be photographed, but projects lasting more than 15 minutes should be described in the text. Test different layouts to make sure the board can be navigated easily.

4)  How much detail?  Photos should clearly show the project and explain how it works. Avoid “bullet points.” Students should be able to follow a project from start to finish without having to read anything.

5)  Consider lighting.  Try to place the board in an area that receives plenty of natural light. If your board is hung, make sure it has plenty of light behind it.

6)  Writing.  Consider using dry-erase markers. Writing on the board with a dry-erase marker is a quick and easy way to jot down notes, check off items on a to-do list, or display student responses.

3. The  “grid”  layout is similar to step and repeat, but it’s organized like an Excel spreadsheet, with columns and rows.

First, you need to prepare the label sheets. Most printers come with label sheets, but you can get label sheets at any office supply store.

To make a label sheet, you just measure the height and width of the space you want to label and divide that by the label size. For instance, my label sheet measures 8.5″ by 11″. This means that I can print 8.5″ by 11″ labels.

Then, you print the labels on regular printer paper. To print labels, you simply select ‘Label’ from the printer menu.

When you’re finished, you just cut around the labels and punch a hole in them with your label puncher.

Here’s how to label all your graphs and charts:

1. Print the graph/chart onto the label sheet.

2. Cut around the graph/chart on the label sheet.

3. Punch a hole in the top left corner of the label.

4. Attach the labels to your graphs/charts with pushpins.

How to Setup Background for Your Project Display Board

A display board isn’t exactly a wall, so it doesn’t have to withstand as much weight or pressure. But if you stuff your board too full, people won’t be able to take in all the information you’re trying to convey.

Also, if your background is too busy, people won’t be able to read everything you’ve written.

On the other hand, if nothing stands out on your board, it might not even catch the eye of judges.

How to make informed decisions about background colours:

Use contrasting colours.  Use colours that don’t match. Think complementary.

Use neutral colours.  Use blacks, greys, whites and muted shades. These colours won’t distract the judges from what you have to show them.

Use bright colours.  Use colours like yellows and oranges, but only very small amounts. Too much of it will stand out like a sore thumb.

Use colors that are neutral or bright.  Use both dark and light versions of the same colours. This will balance your display.

Use dark colors.  Use colors like grey, brown, or black. These colors aren’t as bright or distracting as bright ones.

Don’t use too many colours.  Use no more than three colors for your background.

Stick to shades of the same colour for your background.

Background colours should be pleasing to the eye. Bright colours tend to grab attention, but dark colours can make your display look more mysterious. Select colors that blend well together for your specific project.

Why & How to Use Tri-fold display boards

A display board that is 24 inches wide by 36 inches tall is a good starting point for most projects, but you may need a custom display board if your project is very large or complex.

You can assemble your display board very simply with foam core and poster board, but heavier materials usually require heavier frames. For heavier materials, the choice is usually between a tri-fold display board and a wall-mounted display board.

Tri-fold display boards are inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to transport, but they usually don’t offer much support for heavier materials. For thicker displays, you’ll probably need a sturdy metal frame.

The best way to display your project is by tri-folding the poster board.

The tri-fold display board is 11×17 and is 2.5 inches deep. A tri-fold display board can hold 2-3 science projects.

You should place all your project details on the tri-fold board.

You should write in your project title, date, and your grade level.

You can write in project details and results.

You should place your presentation in the center of the tri-fold board facing out.

You can include handouts, information sheets, and any associated materials.

They’re also useful for presenting complex models, such as diagrams or Venn diagrams.

Pinnable display boards are similar to one-way boards, but with one major difference: They can be pinned. Instead of being mounted to the wall, they’re designed to be pinned on walls. They’re useful for displaying posters and blueprints.

Bulletin Boards:  Bulletin boards are staples in classrooms, but they’re also useful for science fair projects. They’re sticky-backed and come in rolls. Bulletin boards can be hung on the wall, but they also work well on easels or tables.

Easels:  Easels are a common part of classrooms, but they’re also useful in science fair projects. They’re ideal for displaying large projects, and they come in a few varieties, including folding, portrait and landscape.

Table Covers:  Table covers are thin, vinyl sheets that can be attached to tables. They’re ideal for table-top displays because they’re easy to put up and remove.

Other Options:  You can also hang your display board on the wall, using a frame or a poster frame, and you can display your display board on the floor.

Here are 10 tips for designing a good science fair display board

A science fair display board is the centrepiece of your science fair project. Your display board should clearly define your project and communicate its goals to the judge.

1.  Show how you plan to carry out your project.  A science fair display board should show how you will carry out your project. Include pictures, diagrams, and sketches along with the written description.

5.  Use clear labels.  It’s easy to get hung up with fine details, but the last thing you want to do is confuse your audience. Label everything on your display board.

6.  Use contrasting fonts.  Again, use easy-to-read fonts.

Tips for presenting in your science fair

Nothing is worse than being at the science fair and seeing someone else’s beautiful display. It leaves such a bad taste in your mouth and makes you think, “how could I be that poor?”

Well, I’m here to tell you that it is not as difficult as you think.

It’s especially important that everything you display is to scale. This means measuring your magnifiers and beakers first and marking their dimensions on your cardboard board.

Also, try to bring decorations that compliment your display. For instance, if your display is about solar energy , bring props from nature such as a tree branch or potted plants.

Time is also an issue. Don’t try to squeeze in last-minute projects. Give yourself plenty of time to finish, so you won’t be in a rush to get everything done.

“The first rule of presenting is: keep it simple,” says Jeffrey Palermo, Ph.D., chief scientist for undergraduate STEM education at the National Institutes of Health.

After you’ve spent countless hours tweaking your project, the last thing you want to do is fail to recognize its potential. Palermo recommends keeping the message simple: “If you don’t know what you’re talking about, then your audience won’t either.”

Here are some simple guidelines to keep in mind when you’re presenting your science project:

Keep it short.

A presentation should be no longer than 5 to 10 minutes. Short presentations also allow you to cover more ground, so your audience gets a stronger sense of what you’re presenting.

Poster sessions at scientific conferences are a hub for knowledge dissemination and research networking. So, knowing how to design a good conference poster is a big part of becoming a successful scientific communicator and sharing your work with a larger community.

Making a scientific poster can be an exciting and rewarding experience. A well-designed poster can help you showcase your research to attract the attention of fellow scientists and potential collaborators or sponsors.

What is a scientific poster?

A scientific poster is a visual representation of research or scientific work presented at a conference or other professional gathering. The goal is to present complex research information in a way that is easy to understand and visually engaging for conference attendees. Mac Pages : I made 3 posters during my PhD using Mac Pages. I found it quite easy to work with to add text boxes and colored sections. It’s very similar to PowerPoint in many ways. This is an excellent option for Mac users since it’s free.

InkScape : InkScape is a great tool for students on a budget (it’s free). It offers a simple and efficient way to create vector designs or scientific illustrations.

If you’re attending a virtual conference, you may have additional options for creating a virtual scientific poster. In this case, recording on Zoom, adding audio to a slideshow on PowerPoint, or recording on Quicktime are all good options to consider. How to make a good scientific poster for a conference

A well-designed and informative poster that effectively communicates the key findings of your research is your primary goal.

You’ll want to make sure you tailor your poster to the context you’ll be presenting in (i.e. the size of the space, your presentation format, and the level of knowledge your audience is likely to have about your research topic). You’ll also want to give yourself enough time to finish your poster (anywhere between 5 days to a few weeks depending on how much experience you have).

Before we dive into the details of the scientific poster creation process, here’s a highlight of what makes a great scientific poster (and common mistakes to avoid):

So, keeping the above highlights in mind, here’s our step-by-step guide to help you make a scientific poster that will stand out at any conference:

1) Decide on the poster narrative and key messages

Before you begin designing your poster, plan the core content. Start by considering the purpose of your poster and the key message that you want to convey. Identify the main findings of your research and the most important conclusions that you want your audience to take away from your poster. Keep these messages in mind and then think of the varied ways you could weave them into a connected narrative (both visually and verbally) when presenting your poster. This is a great exercise to help you get better at storytelling in science in general.

Later on, when you design your poster and format it, these key messages will need to visually stand out so that someone walking by or scanning your poster can pick them up without stopping to read the full thing.

2) Decide on the sections of your scientific poster

Once you’ve determined your key message(s), you’ll need to organize your research content into sections that make logical sense. Like the abstract in a scientific paper, your poster should have sections summarizing the background and rationale, methodology, results, and the implications of your work. Some common sections included in a scientific poster include:

Title, Key Finding or Takeaway - Highlight the core message in a catchy way.

Introduction - Provide background information and a clear research question or hypothesis. Introduce only what’s necessary to address any knowledge gap.

Methods - Explain the methodology used in your research. This is often the easiest section to skip (or merge with the results to save space and tell your story better).

Results - Present the key findings of your research in a visually appealing way in the results section. Use graphs and tables with legends and titles.

Discussion - Interpret and discuss the implications of your findings.

Conclusion - Summarize your research and its significance. Comment on possible future research. This section can easily be combined with the discussion section.

Citations & Acknowledgements - Reference important materials, your institutional affiliation and thank individuals for specific contributions to your research. This can be smaller than other text so as not to distract from the core message, but it should be included somewhere.

Prompt to Find Out More - Give interested readers an easy option to dive further into your research. Include a resource link (or a QR code) to additional materials.

Keep in mind: these are common sections included in a poster, NOT required sections. Feel free to get creative with more descriptive headings or combine sections if it helps you communicate your message better (and in fewer words). And, wherever possible, think of ways to tell your story through figures and illustrations rather than through text. 3) Create your poster layout and structure

Once you have a clear idea of the content that you want to include, create a rough layout of your poster. Decide on the overall structure of your poster and the placement of each section. This is a great time to pull out a sketchbook and a pencil to mess around with a few different ideas. Or, if you prefer a digital drafting process, you can start making your layout in your software of choice right away.

To make the design process easier, you might want to choose a poster template to customize. There are heaps of useful scientific poster templates available online that you can use ( this collection is a good starting point). Some universities and research centers even provide poster templates that use a specific color scheme and already include the necessary logos. Check whether your institution has a template like this and consider using it if they do - it will save you a lot of time!

Your poster layout should be well-organized, with each section following clearly from the previous one, creating a visual path that tells a coherent story. Decide what will be the direction that the information flows (i.e. left to right and then down? OR top to bottom and then to the right?). Someone who is looking at your poster should not have to jump from one side to the other in order to understand your work. Consider the use of numbers or arrows to indicate the flow of what comes next. Or get creative with eye-catching visuals that naturally draw the reader's eye through the sections in a logical order.

4) Spruce up your scientific poster with a bit of style

The visual design elements (especially colors and fonts) that you choose for your poster can have a big impact on its effectiveness. When choosing a font, consider both the font type and the font size. Picking to read and size is important to help to structure the poster content.

Choose a color scheme that is visually appealing and easy to read (free generators like Material Palette are handy for this if you don’t have an eye for design). Be sure to use high-contrast colors to make important information stand out and to help visually impaired visitors.

Choose fonts that are easy to read and make sure your chosen font size is readable from a distance. Also, consider using a pattern of varying font sizes and/or types to help visually differentiate between poster title, body text, headings, and poster highlights. Use no more than two or three different fonts in your poster overall to avoid clutter and confusion.

If you’re planning to feature a specific image or illustration in your poster, consider using it for inspiration for your color scheme or fonts. It will ensure that your final poster has a more cohesive and less cluttered look.

5) Put all the pieces of your poster together

If you’re using software like Powerpoint: First, choose your page size. Then, start to create content blocks and insert text where appropriate.

If you’re uploading pictures of any sort to your poster design, be sure to use high-quality, high-resolution images. Only import images with 300 dpi resolution (saved in PNG or TIFF formats) to your poster. Double-check to be sure you’ve uploaded good pictures: a high-quality image should not appear blurry or pixelated at 100% zoom.

Once you have your template and design elements in place, it's time to add your content. Begin with the main sections of your poster, such as the introduction, results, and discussion. Use graphs, charts, tables, and images to present your data in a clear and visually appealing way.

When adding text, use short sentences and bullet points to make it easy to read. Use headings and subheadings to break up the content and make it more visually appealing.

6) Print your scientific poster and get ready to present it

Once your poster is complete, it's time to print it so it’s ready to present at the conference. Again, it’s important that you read the conference guidelines very carefully and print your poster in the correct size and orientation. Make sure you print in the highest-quality as well.

Some institutions have dedicated printing facilities, but you can also visit a copy shop that has a large-format printer. If you haven’t had to get a poster printed before, it’s worth asking a colleague for recommendations on a good local spot. Or, if you are feeling creative, you might want to go a different route and print your poster on fabric (this gives you the option to reuse it as a unique table cloth or picnic blanket in the future).

Whatever your printing format, make sure you budget enough time for a reprint if disaster strikes (a week or more of buffer time is a good bet). It’s also worth testing printing out with a “dummy poster” on a small piece of paper. This will allow you to check that everything looks okay when printed before you spend a good chunk of change on the final, full-sized poster.

Finally, when preparing for the conference, be sure to bring all of the necessary materials with you, such as pins or velcro strips, to hang your poster. It doesn’t hurt to also have a digital copy of your poster on a thumb drive just in case something happens to yours in transit. Many conferences have onsite printing services that you could resort to in the event of a mishap.

A few extra tips to help you make a scientific poster

Just a few more helpful things to keep in mind when designing your scientific poster:

1) Quality over quantity

A little bit of text goes a long way on a poster - in fact, the fewer words the better. Posters with less text are more inviting and easier to absorb. Don’t forget that you will be there to explain your work, so there is no reason to try to include everything in the text. Shorten your text by summarizing sections with bullet points and highlighting the key messages.

As mentioned in this article on designing conference posters: If all of your text is kept to a minimum (500 words), an average person could fully read your poster in about 5 minutes. Think about how long you’d want to spend reading through a poster, and use that as motivation to chop your content down to even less than that 5-minute reading mark.

2) Use color, visuals, and white space strategically

Great posters maintain a good amount of white space around the text boxes and figures. A cramped poster is hard to read (and intimidating to passing attendees looking for catchy, quick takeaways). A safe bet is to always include more white space than you think you’ll need.

As much as graphics and visuals can help, they should only be used if they truly are helpful. Don’t get too wrapped up in “decorating your poster.” Get rid of any images or illustrations that aren’t directly related to your research and that don’t help you highlight the key messages you want to deliver.

Finally, resist the urge to use a blown up photo as your poster background. All it adds is confusion and clutter. You’re better off using a light, neutral tone in the background and adding interest with relevant, informational graphics.

3) Get picky about your poster fonts and formatting

After you’ve looked at the big picture design and made sure your key message is coming across clearly, dive into the details to perfect your poster:

  • Try to make all of your text boxes the same width. It keeps things visually consistent.
  • If possible, keep paragraphs to 1-2 sentences rather than big blocks of text.
  • Use italics instead of underlining. Underlining draws too much attention to a word.
  • Don't use fancy fonts. They make your poster look busy and can make it harder to read (especially for people with dyslexia). In general, sans serif fonts are easiest to read.
  • Except for a few words that you might want to highlight, ensure that all of your text is black or a dark color to create better contrast and readability.

4) Don’t be afraid to get a bit creative

We’ve listed some common poster elements and templates in this article, but that doesn’t mean you should hesitate to be creative. Think about design elements or images that are relevant to your research and that could make your poster stand out from the crowd. A few ideas to get your creative brainstorming started:

  • Add hidden informational panels behind paper flaps on your poster to make the experience more interactive.
  • Attach objects or physical things to add some dimension/interest to your poster.
  • Bring props or handouts to supplement your poster beyond what exists on it.

The same goes for your poster layout. Don’t be afraid to completely switch things up in a way that suits your research. A twitter-famous example of this was Mike Morrisons take on the best conference poster layout:

5) Get a second (and third) opinion on your scientific poster

Before you finalize your poster, make sure to review it carefully for accuracy, completeness, and visual appeal. Check for spelling and grammar errors and make sure that all of your data is presented accurately.

Print out a draft of your poster and ask a colleague or mentor to review it and provide feedback. It’s also worth getting feedback from someone with limited understanding of your research topic (they’ll be able to give you an idea of how accessible the wording is and a good review on your design without being bogged down in the technical details). Based on the feedback you receive, make any necessary revisions before finalizing your poster.

  • The content is straight to the point. It highlights the problems with existing compression formats then goes straight into the developed method and results.
  • A short sentence to summarize the key conclusions would be helpful. However, leaving it out could also encourage the reader to ask the presenter and spark a conversation!

How to Make a Science Exhibition Poster From Scratch

Are you interested in making your own science fair poster from scratch? Great! Simply follow these steps:

  • Once you have made your own poster, click save and exit. Remember, even if you create the poster using color, you can still print it out in black and white.

What to Include on Your Science Fair Poster

When it comes to science projects and science fair posters, there are standard items that students should include to make their presentation amazing. Here are some ideas from the Storyboard That former teachers:

  • A title: Your title should be clear, bold and colorful, and at the top of your poster. It should be brief, but accurately depict the jist of your project.
  • Materials: Always include a neat and organized list of the materials that you used for your project.
  • Hypothesis: What did you think would happen during your experiment? Write out your prediction. This step is skipped if you are not presenting findings from an experiment.
  • Purpose: If you have conducted an experiment, what was the purpose of this experiment? Why did you choose to do this specific project?
  • Questions: What questions did you encounter when completing your project? Challenges? Successes?
  • Procedure: What were the steps that you took to complete your project or experiment? This should be in list form in chronological order.
  • Visuals: Visuals could be images, photographs, diagrams, drawings, charts, graphs, or anything else that draws attention to your poster. Visuals should be neat, bright, bold, and colorful where applicable.
  • Conclusion: You should always include a write-up that sums up your project or experiment. What did you learn? What would you do differently next time? Did you make any mistakes that you had to fix?

Here are a few tips and tricks to make your science fair poster or your science project board template truly stand out!

  • If possible, it is best to type the text for your poster. It is darker and usually neater than handwritten text.
  • If you are typing, choose a font that you like, but that is also professional and clear. Cursive, fancy, or small font should be avoided, as well as overly bold font.

  • All visuals should be clear and related to the topic of your poster.

The first step to creating a successful science project display is to read the rules concerning the size and types of materials allowed. Unless you are required to present your project on a single board, I recommend a tri-fold cardboard or heavy poster board display. This is a central piece of cardboard/posterboard with two fold-out wings. The folding aspect not only helps the display support itself, but it is also great protection for the interior of the board during transport. Avoid wooden displays or flimsy poster board. Make sure the display will fit inside any vehicle that is required for transportation.

Organization and Neatness

Organize your poster using the same sections as are listed in the report. Print each section using a computer, preferably with a laser printer, so that bad weather won't cause the ink to run. Put a title for each section at its top, in letters large enough to be seen from several feet away (very large font size). The focal point of your display should be your purpose and hypothesis . It's great to include photos and bring your project with you if it is allowed and space permits. Try to arrange your presentation in a logical manner on the board. Feel free to use color to make your presentation stand out. In addition to recommending laser printing, my personal preference is to use a sans serif font because such fonts tend to be easier to read from a distance. As with the report, check spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

  • Title For a science fair , you probably want a catchy, clever title. Otherwise, try to make it an accurate description of the project. For example, I could entitle a project, 'Determining Minimum NaCl Concentration that can be Tasted in Water'. Avoid unnecessary words, while covering the essential purpose of the project. Whatever title you come up with, get it critiqued by friends, family, or teachers. If you are using a tri-fold board, the title usually is placed at the top of the middle board.
  • Pictures If at all possible, include color photographs of your project, samples from the project, tables, and graphs. Photos and objects are visually appealing and interesting.
  • Introduction and Purpose Sometimes this section is called 'Background'. Whatever its name, this section introduces the topic of the project, notes any information already available, explains why you are interested in the project, and states the purpose of the project.
  • The Hypothesis or Question Explicitly state your hypothesis or question.
  • Materials and Methods List the materials you used in your project and describe the procedure that you used to perform the project. If you have a photo or diagram of your project, this is a good place to include it.
  • Data and Results Data and Results are not the same thing. Data refers to the actual numbers or other information you obtained in your project. If you can, present the data in a table or graph. The Results section is where the data is manipulated or the hypothesis is tested. Sometimes this analysis will yield tables, graphs, or charts, too. More commonly, the Results section will explain the significance of the data or will involve a statistical test .
  • Conclusion The Conclusion focuses on the Hypothesis or Question as it compares to the Data and Results. What was the answer to the question? Was the hypothesis supported (keep in mind a hypothesis cannot be proved, only disproved)? What did you find out from the experiment? Answer these questions first. Then, depending on your answers, you may wish to explain ways in which the project might be improved or introduce new questions that have come up as a result of the project. This section is judged not only by what you were able to conclude but also by your recognition of areas where you could ​ not draw valid conclusions based on your data.
  • References You may need to cite references or provide a bibliography for your project. In some cases, this is pasted onto the poster. Other science fairs prefer that you simply print it out and have it available, placed below or beside the poster.

Be Prepared

Most of the time, you will need to accompany your presentation, explain your project, and answer questions. Sometimes the presentations have time limits. Practice what you are going to say, out loud, to a person or at least a mirror. If you can give your presentation to a person, practice having a question and answer session. How to design an effective scientific poster

The Challenge

Every year, thousands of scientists present their latest findings in poster format at scientific conferences, workshops, and symposia. Posters can be a highly effective way to communicate science—but every year, poster halls are full of cluttered, hard-to-read sheets that are full to the brim with text and anything but straightforward to understand. It turns out that making a scientific poster is easy. Making an effective scientific poster is less so.

The reality of poster sessions at scientific meetings is that, in general, most people will not spend long at a given poster, will not specialize in the topic it describes, and will not proactively ask questions of the presenter (assuming she/he is at hand). But the goal of any presentation should be to help the audience understand something they didn’t before—so given these constraints, how can we use posters to explain our science as quickly and effectively as possible?

The Concept

In short, a poster should be as close to an infographic as possible.

Infographics (a combination of “information” and “graphic”) are an increasingly common tool for data visualization, designed to communicate a message quickly, easily, and with as few assumptions about the background of the reader as possible. Most infographics we’re likely to encounter are about topics less complex than a scientific research project—think a timeline for the exploration of Saturn , Napoleon’s Russian campaign , or arguably the London Underground map or the Golden Record cover —but the fundamental approach holds true. The most effective poster will therefore:

  • contain a single, key take-home message;
  • convey that message by itself (but will make the reader want to talk to you/read your paper);
  • be accessible to those not in your immediate field; and
  • be quickly accessible to the reader.

It might help to think of what a poster should not be: a straightforward conversion of a meeting abstract (or, worse, a manuscript) to poster format. Instead, a poster is your tool with which to take advantage of how the human brain takes in and processes visual information to deliver a presentation your audience will benefit from (and might even enjoy)!

What is a Research Poster?

Posters are widely used in the academic community, and most conferences include poster presentations in their program.  Research posters summarize information or research concisely and attractively to help publicize it and generate discussion. 

The poster is usually a mixture of a brief text mixed with tables, graphs, pictures, and other presentation formats. At a conference, the researcher stands by the poster display while other participants can come and view the presentation and interact with the author.

What Makes a Good Poster?

  • Important information should be readable from about 10 feet away
  • Title is short and draws interest
  • Word count of about 300 to 800 words
  • Text is clear and to the point
  • Use of bullets, numbering, and headlines make it easy to read

How to Create a Science Project Display Board

When entering a science fair or completing a science project for a class doing the experiment is just the first part. Once you have finished your experiment, you will have to display the work you did and the results that came from that work. The typical science experiment is displayed on a white tri-fold board and includes many sections. Proper placement of the sections is crucial to the success of your board.

Deciding What Information to Include

Step 1 Title your project.

  • A good title might be “Volcanic Explosions” as opposed to just “Volcanoes.”
  • When you can, use vivid, specific titles like “Bioluminescence in Crystal Jellyfish” in place of generic titles like “Glowing Jellies.”

Step 2 Include an abstract or a hypothesis.

  • Follow the guidelines of the assignment or fair to know if you need an abstract or a hypothesis section.
  • A hypothesis must accurately describe what is to be tested in the experiment, and what the expected outcome is. For example, a statement such as “The baking soda will react with the vinegar in a neutralization reaction, evolving gases and building pressure inside the volcano replica. This pressure will cause fluid to spew from the top of the replica.”

Step 3 Back up your hypothesis with literature.

  • Cite previous experiments that indicate that there is a reason to expect the results that your hypothesis predicts. For example, you could cite a lab experiment that states that acids and bases give off gas when they neutralize each other to support the hypothesis that baking soda and vinegar will go through such a reaction.

Step 4 Post your experimental procedure.

Step 1 Organize sections from left to right and top to bottom.

  • All fonts should be easily readable. If the font is too small or unclear, this will discourage people from reading the information.
  • Use bullet lists, multiple paragraphs, and white space on your board to avoid an overwhelming amount of text.

Step 6 Glue all of your sections to the board.

  • If you prefer not to use glue, it may sometimes be acceptable to tack items to the board.
  • Double sided tape is a good way to stick on things that do not stick well with glue.

How to Design a Poster for Your Data Science Project?

If you are familiar with data visualization and presentation of data analysis results, then you’d know the significance of neatly organized findings. You can either show each step of your work with a PowerPoint (PPT) presentation or, if you believe in simplicity and love shortcuts, a project poster is a perfect solution.

The reason why many people prefer posters is that they show you the big picture without delving much into details. Also, posters save time - for both reader and presenter. They highlight only the key points of the project, which comes in handy with complex and long ones. Lastly, we all know how boring a long PPT can be with those endless slides. So boring that we often lose interest and drift away from the actual project. A poster keeps the focus on one page only where you don’t have much space to stray.

Wondering how to design your poster? In this article, I’ll help you get started. I’ll cover the following topics:

Examples and Resources

A poster, usually fitting a single page, is used to present the conclusions you’ve come to during the analysis of your data. It needs to be organized and easy to understand. This means taking care of the little details, such as the font size and colors, so the words are readable and easy to comprehend.

So, how to make a poster which works and also stands out?

  • Words should be readable from a reasonable distance
  • Bullet points, numbering and underlining important concepts do a great deal of organization
  • Different sections should be separated with lines to build a structure
  • The colours should be suitable, neither too bright nor dark, taking into consideration the contrast between the background and the font colour
  • The title should be concise and descriptive

What are the Key Components of a Poster?

A project poster consists of 6 main sections. Each one has its specific purpose and includes the most important elements of your project. To make it easier, I have visualized these sections in the graphic below. Then, I’ll go into detail with each one of them.

Project Title

First, remember to write the name of your project in a large font. Then, add the names of your team members. If you have worked on the project by yourself, it is still a good idea to add your name under the title. After all, you should give yourself some credit for a job well done. Stick to smaller font for the names.

Introduction

Here, you can talk about the problem statement or the idea of your project. The introduction can be a couple of sentences or bullets describing the project’s aim and what your objectives for solving the problem are. You can also include the data source and what inspired you to do the project. For example:

“As stated by the World Health Organization (WHO), stroke is the 2nd leading cause of death globally, being responsible for nearly 11% of total deaths. The main objective of this project is to predict a stroke based on some demographic and clinical features.”

Or another might be: “Kerala is a state in South India where floods affect the whole region due to high rainfall during the monsoon season. In this project, we’ll build a binary logistic model to predict floods based on the monthly rainfall index for each year in Kerala, India.”

In this part, you explain the steps you’ve taken to achieve the project’s objectives. They can vary from one project to another but let’s say that you’re trying to predict an output using some variables in your dataset by building a predictive model. The basic steps in this case would be:

I- Assessing the data

II- Cleaning the data

III- Training and building the model

IV- Evaluating the model’s performance

Remember to keep it short and to the point. You don't need to mention all the details in each step. Just a summary would be sufficient for the readers.

Now that you’ve elaborated on the methods you've used, in the results part, you have the chance to share the outcomes of your project. This can be as a summary, a table, or a graphic visual to present your findings. Getting back to the example from the methods section where a predictive model was built, the results can be in the following form:

I- Mention the methods used to evaluate the model’s performance

II- Insert an image showing the performance report or a ROC curve

Remember that you don’t have to include all the results because there might be many. Just focus on the points related to the objectives you’ve mentioned in the problem statement.

Visuals & Conclusions

This is your chance to show your artistic side and your deductive skills. There are many cases when people approach the problem correctly and follow the right steps to solving it but, eventually, cannot communicate their findings. This might happen when they lack the ability to draw conclusions that prove the success of their work. It’s just like a detective working on a hard case, eventually able to crack it but then doesn’t show up in court!

There isn’t a specific blueprint when delivering your results. However, here in this section, you can insert some visuals explaining the correlation between different variables and your conclusions based on these correlations. Besides visuals, you can summarize your findings n bullet points to enhance the readability. Or, include bar charts, pie charts, graphs etc. depending on your needs. Let’s go back to the example with the stroke-rate prediction.

Normally, bar charts are useful when comparing data values across certain categories in the dataset. When predicting strokes, a bar chart can depict how many people had or hadn’t had a stroke in each age category.

In the same project, a box plot will show the effect of clinical features, like average glucose level and body mass index, on the likelihood of having a stroke. Also, pie charts are good providing an overview of a certain variable, such as the proportion of males and females in a dataset. Line charts, on the other hand, are best for illustrating a change in a certain variable over time, such as the number of COVID-19 deaths in a year.

All these types of visuals can be used in our example to display different aspects of the findings. Of course, don’t limit your creativity and restrain yourself only to the above-mentioned.

Finally, you’ve reached the easiest part of your project poster. In the references section, you need to list the sources you've used or, in some cases, give credit to the people whose work helped you complete the project. This can be:

  • Research papers

Final Advice on the Project Poster Structure

There are no specific guidelines or criteria when it comes to designing your poster. The layout can be horizontal or vertical. The number and structure of columns can vary from one to another. Some posters have images, and some don’t. It’s totally flexible. The most important thing is that you deliver your message clearly and organized. Make sure that the language is simple yet descriptive and don’t repeat the same idea over and over. After all, you have limited space so put everything in a structured way.

The components I have mentioned so far are the most common structural elements of a project poster. And since we need to see how it all comes together in practice, let’s look at some examples and resources to download free templates for your next data science project!

Example No.1 - Multimodal Neural Decoding with Natural Data

This one is quite exciting - although the project isn’t simple, it’s presented in a fashionable and organized way, making it easy to understand. As you can see, it has most of the parts I have talked about. The introduction, methods, results, and conclusion, plus enough clear and creative visuals.

Example No.2 - Probabilistic Cause-of-death Assignment Using Verbal Autopsies

This collaborative project of the University of Washington is discussing how deaths are assigned causes, especially using Verbal Autopsy. This is one way to determine the cause of death using all the available information from recent symptoms to surrounding circumstances. Well, we’d steer away from reading about this project before bed!

Example No.3 - Predicting Discontinuation of Docetaxel Treatment for mCRPC with Hill-climbing and Random Forest.

After analysing patients’ data in AstraZeneca clinical trial, these guys tried building a model to predict which patients are more likely to discontinue their treatment within 3 months. The poster is quite creative in terms of design, and colour choice, and is structurally pleasing to the eye. Again, the major elements discussed in this article are present.

Example No.4 - Predicting Strokes

The project’s primary aim is to predict a stroke based on some demographic and clinical features. The project was hosted as a competition on Kaggle a year ago. There are different approaches to solving the problem, but in this poster, a binary logistic regression model was trained to predict the likelihood of a stroke based on the 2 most related features: age & average glucose level.

MATSE Graduate Poster Competition

MATSE Graduate Poster Competition

Now accepting entries through March 15!

Students engaged in independent or industry projects, or other academic interests demonstrating their hard work and scholarship, are encouraged to submit a poster to the annual Graduate Poster Competition.

Eligibility

The competition is open to MatSE graduate students.

  • First, second, and third place winners will receive awards of $250, $100, or $50, respectively. Winners announced April 10.

Poster Submission Deadline

  • All posters must be submitted online by  March 15, 2024, at 11:59 pm . Late submissions will not be accepted. Students are encouraged to submit their entries as early as possible. You will receive an email confirming that you have submitted your poster. Submit entry here.

Poster Guidelines

  • Please include the department wordmark or use the templates provided.
  • Poster sizes must be 36" x 48" in either landscape or portrait orientation. See poster printing guidelines for assistance.
  • Posters must be submitted in PDF format only. (Check your PDF poster size before submitting by clicking CTRL+D) If the poster is not the correct size, it will be disqualified.
  • If you need any help with a logo please email  [email protected] .
  • No posters will be accepted after the deadline.
  • Poster must be approved by primary investigator/advisor before submitting.

Judging and Criteria

  • A panel of intercollege MatSE graduate students will judge the posters on technical content, presentation logic, and overall appearance.
