How to use Google Assistant, plus all the ‘OK, Google’ commands you need to know

Simon Hill

One of the best things about using Google on your smartphone is the voice commands . Using just your voice you can get your device to do all sorts of things on your behalf. It’s fast, convenient, and still feels a bit like the future. The complete list of “ OK, Google ” commands and compatible apps and devices has grown considerably over time, meaning there are likely things you can do with Google that you’re not even aware of. To find out more, check out everything you need to know about Google Assistant .

  • Turning on ‘OK, Google’

Searching and asking questions

Google account and privacy settings, messaging, notes, and music, send money with google assistant, alarms, math, travel, and more.

  • Other apps compatible with ‘OK, Google’

If you own an Android device, you might want to turn on “OK, Google”   so that you can start using Google Assistant without having to tap the microphone icon. The first thing we need to do is make sure this feature is turned on, so let’s see if it is.

Turning on ‘OK, Google’

  • Open your App Drawer and open the Google app, then tap the More (hamburger menu) in the corner, and go to Settings . Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Google > Search.
  • Tap on  Voice > Voice Match,  and turn on  Access with Voice Match . You may also want to toggle on  Unlock with Voice Match if you’d like to be able to use “OK, Google” even when your phone is locked.
  • Follow the instructions to train your phone to respond to your voice.
  • If you’re having trouble when you say “OK, Google,”   and it doesn’t seem to be working for you, then try tapping  Retrain voice model,  or  Delete voice model and set it up again.

Now that it’s turned on, we can start using voice commands. Let’s take a look at all the different commands you can use with your device. All you have to do is say “OK, Google,” or “Hey, Google,” and Google will start listening to your commands. You can always tap the microphone icon and issue a voice command if you prefer not to use the “OK, Google” feature, or you can tap the keyboard icon at the bottom left and type your queries and commands.

Asking Google about anything

  • “How old is [ name ]?”
  • “Where was [ name ] born?’
  • “Who invented [ anything you want to find ]?”
  • “How tall is [ name of person or building ]?”
  • “What country is [ anything you want to find ] in?”
  • “What’s my commute like?”
  • “Will it rain tomorrow?”
  • “How far is [ any business you want to find ] from here?”
  • “What’s a good restaurant nearby?”
  • “Help me relax.”
  • “Where’s my hotel?”
  • “Browse [ nameofwebsite.com ],” when you want to go directly to the website.
  • “Go to [ name of website ],” when you want it to appear in a Google search.

Google can obviously turn to the internet for answers, but it can also search your Gmail inbox and some other places. For example, when we asked “Where’s my hotel?” it looked in Gmail and found an upcoming reservation.

  • “How is [ say the name of the team ] doing?”
  • “Results from [ say the name of the team ] last game.”
  • “When is [ say the name of the team ] next game?”
  • “Did [ say the name of the team ] win the last game?”
  • “Will it rain today?”
  • “What’s the weather like in [ say location ]?
  • “When is sunset?”
  • “What’s the temperature?”
  • “What is [ name ] stock price?”
  • “What is [ name ] trending at?”
  • “What is the definition of [ say the word ]?”
  • “Define [ say the word ].”
  • “Synonyms for [ say the word ].”
  • “Open Google account settings.”
  • “Show my Google search history.”
  • “Adjust my Google privacy settings.”
  • “Adjust my Google security settings.”
  • “How are you keeping my data safe?”
  • “Delete everything I said today.” (Also works for this week, month, or year)

Finding and unlocking your phone

  • “Find my phone.”
  • “Ring my phone.”

Both of these commands will work, even if your phone is on a Do Not Disturb setting. However, your Android phone location needs to be turned on, and the phone needs to be connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi. If you have multiple people using the same device (such as a Nest Home) to find their phones, then all their individual Google Accounts must be separately linked.

  • “Show me my messages.”
  • “Text [ name of contact ] [ say the message ].”
  • “Send an email to [ say the contact name ] [ say what you want to write in the email ].”
  • “Call [ say the name of the contact ].”
  • “Call [ say the name of the contact ] on speakerphone.”
  • “Note to self [ dictate note ].”
  • “What’s this song?”
  • “Play some music.”

Other messaging, music, and social apps that work with ‘OK, Google’

If you want to send a message with Viber, and not your default text messaging app, then you would say, “OK, Google, send a message with Viber.”   You can also try commands such as “take a note with Evernote,” or “search for cat videos on YouTube.”

These are all apps that are compatible with “OK, Google,” but this is not a complete list:

  • Evernote — “Make a note with Evernote.”
  • Whatsapp — “Send a Whatsapp message to [ say contact name ].”
  • Viber — “Send a message with Viber.”
  • Telegram — “Send a Telegram message to [ say contact name ].”
  • YouTube — “Search [ say what you want to search for ] on YouTube.”
  • Pandora — “Play [ name of song ] on Pandora.”
  • Google Music — “Listen to [ name of song ].”
  • Facebook — “Post [ say your message ] on Facebook.”
  • Twitter — “Post [ say your message ] on Twitter.”

If you want to install any of these apps, you can find them in the Play Store by saying, “OK, Google, search for [ name of app ] in the Play Store.”

Streaming shows with Google Assistant

Google Assistant supports a variety of streaming apps including Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, YouTube TV, and many more. Some of these may need to be individually linked via the partner app for full compatibility. When this is done, it can open up a trove of commands for controlling your favorite streamer, like:

  • “Open YouTube on TV.”
  • “Play The Umbrella Academy on TV.”
  • “What’s new on Netflix?”

Other to-do and notes apps that work with ‘OK, Google’

These note apps all work by saying “Make a note with [name of app]”

  • Google Keep

As long as you have Google Pay set up  on your phone, you can send money to people or request money from them using Google Assistant with commands like:

  • “Send [ say contact name ] $20.”
  • “Request $10 from [ say contact name ] for dinner tonight.”
  • “Set an alarm for [ say time ].”
  • “Set an alarm in [ say how many minutes, or hours ].”
  • “Set a repeating alarm for [ say the label ].”
  • “Set a repeating alarm for [ say the label ] at [ say the time ].”

  • “Show me my alarms.”
  • “When is my next alarm?”
  • “Wake me up at [ say the time ] then [ the day, or say ‘everyday’ ].”
  • “Create/Add/Schedule a meeting.”
  • “Create a calendar event.”
  • “Schedule an event [ say the title of the event ] then [ say the day and time ].”
  • “What’s my next appointment?”
  • “Show me the appointments for [ say the day ].”
  • “What does my [ say schedule or calendar ] look like on [ say the day ]?”
  • “Add a reminder.”
  • “Remind me to [ say what you want to be reminded of ] at [ say the time ].”
  • “Remind me to [ say what you want to be reminded of ] when I get to/next time I’m at [ say the location ].”
  • “What is the square root of [ number ]?”
  • “What is [ number ] divided by/multiplied by/plus/minus [ number ].”
  • “What is [ number ] percent of [ number ]?”
  • “What is [ number ] percent of [ number ] divided by/multiplied by/plus/minus [ number ]?”
  • “Flip a coin.”
  • “Roll a dice.”

Conversions

  • “What is [ say the number ] [ say the conversion category: meters, years, yards, liters ] in/to [ say what you want to convert it to ].”
  • “Convert [ say the number ] [ say the currency ] into [ say the number ] [ say the currency ].”

  • “Distance from here to [ say the name of the location ].”
  • “How far away is [ say the name of the location ]?”
  • “How do you say [ word ] in [ say the language ]?”
  • “What is the flight status of [ say the name of the airline ] [ say the flight number ]?”
  • “When does [ say the name of a business ] close?”

Translations

Google Assistant now has a built-in interpreter mode, as well as compatibility with a variety of translation apps. Without downloading anything extra, you can switch Assistant to translate with commands like these:

  • “Be my Italian interpreter.”
  • “Turn on interpreter mode.”
  • Interpret from Chinese to English.”

A tone will then play, and anything said after the tune will be translated by Google Assistant. If you’ve specified two languages, you don’t have to alternate between them; Assistant will just interpret based on the last thing you said. You can exit this mode at any time by saying “Stop” or “Quit.”

Controlling your device

  • “Take a picture/photo.”
  • “Record a video.”
  • “Take a selfie.”
  • “Increase/decrease volume.”
  • “Mute the volume.”
  • “Turn [ on/off ] [ Flashlight, WiFi, Bluetooth ].”
  • “Play Lucky Trivia.”
  • “Play Animal Trivia.”
  • “Tell me a riddle.”
  • “Crystal Ball.”
  • “Roll a die.”

Other apps compatible with ‘OK, Google’

More and more apps are building compatibility with Google Assistant. You can find an array of choices from shopping to entertainment to games to smart home controls. You can also complete basic tasks like checking a rewards balance, calling an Uber, or putting in a Starbucks order. Visit the Google Assistant website to check out the categories and see what options are available.

Be aware that some tasks are available only with specific devices. For example, some options are only available via Google Home speaker or Android TV , while others are exclusive to your phone .

It's little wonder the Samsung Galaxy S10 range has proved so popular since its release in spring 2019. Comprising three models, the Galaxy S10 range boasts a hole-punch display, powerful hardware, and some outstandingly versatile camera tech.

But like all things in life, it's not perfect. Whether you're rocking the Samsung Galaxy S10, the super-sized Galaxy S10 Plus, or the cheaper (but still great) Galaxy S10e, you're likely to come across some problems and issues that make life with your chosen partner a little harder to handle. But don't worry, there are solutions to most issues, and we're here to dig them out so you can stop pulling your hair out. Here are some of the most common Samsung Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and S10e problems, and how to fix them. Issue: Apps crash or Force Close A big issue that has plagued Galaxy S10 owners since launch has been a certain instability where apps are concerned. It seems that apps are prone to crashing or throwing up a Force Close error. This has happened with a big range of apps, and has even been reported after the Android 11 update. This isn't just an issue with the Galaxy S10, and other Galaxy smartphones have also showcased this error. Solutions:

The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are now older than the average bear, but they're still excellent phones. While they're still receiving the latest software updates like Android 11, and now have access to the Android 12 beta, many users have reported issues, bugs, and glitches with their devices.

If you have run into any Pixel 3 problems, we've put together this guide to identify and deal with the issues. Here's everything you need to know about Pixel 3 problems, and how to fix them. Problem: Apps randomly crashing Here's a problem that's plagued a lot of different people on different phones -- and the Pixel 3 and 3 XL are no exception. If your Pixel 3 is having trouble with apps crashing, then it could be because of a flawed Android WebView update. Solution:

When you need to go somewhere, you naturally seek out the best route with the lightest traffic possible and fewest obstructions. Today's mapping and navigation apps are there for you. The two most popular apps for iOS and Android -- Google Maps and Waze -- deliver on that brief, presenting up-to-the-minute information, real-time turn-by-turn directions, and much more.

Google Maps and Waze are amongst the most popular navigation apps -- even among iPhone users -- because both are easy to use and consistently deliver accurate directions. So which one of these two Google-owned apps should you choose as your day-to-day driving navigation aid? Let's figure it out by looking at the two side-by-side, so you can see why of the two apps you prefer. What is Waze?

Only one complaint

Google Maps as an application is great for travel and directions over all. It is accurately interconnected to transit systems in cities I travel to. Easy interface for looking at reviews and information of destination’s. Now the only thing I have to complain about is when you type in your destination for directions is the map auto-fixes to compass 🧭 north, instead of the direction you are facing. For example if I am headed west and fading south the map appears “upside down”. I understand if you use the “live navigation” feature the map corrects itself and relays the information based on current facing direction. As one who loves to walk and wants to save battery life on my mobile device, it would be great if the default for “get directions” without navigation feature would load to the direction you are facing so you don’t have to toggle the map when looking at directions.

Google Aap brings annoying search bar at the bottom

Recent update Google Search bar has been brought to the bottom of the screen. Now when app is launched on Apple devices (iPhone) search bar automatically opens up (swiped up from bottom toward to top of the) which covers around 80% of the screen. Google is app is not only used for search only, instead 95% of the time this app is used for getting all kinds of updates, weather, stocks, news active, tending video, (off course sponsored linked/ ads also shows up). By covering all that, and forcing a useless search bar and covering entire screen is super annoying, and user experience and satisfaction has significantly dropped. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Please bring back old interface, where search bar is at the top which doesn’t interface with the main contents of the Google dashboard. We know how to locate the search bar to perform a search. Right now we have to swipe down the search bar first to get to the pre populated & personalized content, also search bar popes open randomly and covers the entire screen, that’s probably how people holds their phone (usually people hold phone from the lower 30-40% side) and accidentally it touches the search area and it just a pops open. This wasn’t the issue earlier though. Please bring back old interface. Of let user chose where they want to place the search bar. Thanks BK

Google - get rid of the blue pop up tips!!!

Have an issue and cannot find anyone at Google to help. Literally EVERY SINGLE time I am on Google on my iphone, these blue “tip” boxes pop up. They contain directions and/or explanations for VERY self explanatory buttons and things on the Google page. For example -I search something like “candy” and then on the results that come up there is an overview of the subject searched. Then there is a blue box that pops up and points to that overview button and says “tap here for summary and general info”. I’m not understanding why Google has to define/explain this button every time I search something. I know what overview means. Or I look up a restaurant and a box forms over the “order here” button on the result page and says “view menu and order food.” If these instructional pop ups only occurred once when I first used Google I would understand but every time I search something there are blue boxes all over the page speaking to me like I am dumb lol. Soooo unnecessary and so annoying. Trying to find a way to disable this but no one can give me any info. I’ve tweeted at them and they don’t answer, I’ve called apple who says it’s Google’s issue but no one cares. Have stopped using Google because of how annoying it is.
Hi. Thank you for reporting this issue. Can you please submit a feedback report and tell us a little bit more about what you're experiencing so we can investigate further? Open Google App > tap top right profile picture or initial > Help & feedback > Send feedback, this will help us ensure that this gets reviewed by the right team. Thank you!

How to contact Google support for help with any Google-related issue

  • There are a few routes you can take to contact Google for help with a Google-related issue.
  • Google has a customer service number you can call, though it's largely automated.
  • Google Support tutorials and Community help forums provide online support and troubleshooting tips.

Don't take this personally, but Google doesn't want to talk to you. Part of it is that they'd be absurdly busy if they ran an employee-reliant customer support call center, as hundreds of millions of people use some form of Google every day.

The other thing is that Google values your security, and they don't want to put you at risk for a hack by dealing with things like password resets or account recoveries over the phone.

So, how do you contact Google? Here are a few options.

How to contact Google by phone

You can call Google customer support at 650-253-0000 . The number leads to an operator service called "the Googleplex" that is based at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Calling the number will take you to an automated menu that will walk you through a series of other menus. Most of the time, the end result of your call will be a voice recording telling you which webpage to visit to try to resolve your issue. In some instances, you may be connected to a human customer service representative.

The Googleplex service has its working hours listed as Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm PST. If you call outside those hours, you'll simply be directed through menus by a voice recording and won't be able to reach a human representative.

There is also an international option for those based in India. That Google contact team can be reached at 1-800-419-0157 .

How to get help from Google Support online

With most issues you encounter in the course of using Google, be it a problem with your Gmail, your Google Chrome browser, or Google Maps, other people have likely encountered and documented the same issues a dozen times over.

Google staffers write tutorials on dealing with common issues, and there are also user forums addressing myriad problems. Here's how to find the former.

1. Log into your Google account, then go to support.google.com .

2. You will see a search bar into which you can type your issue above nine icons displayed in the middle of the screen.

3. If you have a problem with one of these specific products, like Google Chrome or YouTube, click the icon. If not, briefly describe your issue in the search bar.

4. The page following each icon will list out many of the more common issues users experience, so look for your problem there.

How to use Google Community help forums

If you can't find the help you need from Google's posted content, consider sifting through or asking its forums.

1. On the support.google.com page, select the icon of the Google product or service at issue and click it.

2. On the next page, near the top left of the screen, click the word Community .

3. There will be multiple categories with many answered questions displayed on the Community page; browse through for answers, or type a question into the search bar auto filled with Describe your issue in the center of the page.

4. In the box at the bottom of the Featured posts section on the Community page, you can click the blue words Ask now to pose a question to the community.

Meet the new Google sign-in page

It’s a little more horizontal than it used to be, but it’s still google..

A screenshot of the updated login page for Google, with a wider layout than the narrow, vertically-oriented login box it previously had.

If you’ve logged in to your Google account recently, you might have seen a message that “a new look is coming soon,” and now, Google is showing off the “more modern look and feel” of its new sign-in page.

Of course, if that screenshot feels incredibly familiar, that’s because it’s mostly the same as the old one. The sign-in steps are all the same, except it has a light Material Design makeover that’s now aligned horizontally to work better across many screen types, including large and wide screens, like the ones found inside a Pixel Fold or on a Pixel Tablet.

Google diagram showing the difference between the old sign-in -page and the new one.

It’s also still ready to prompt users for their passwords, passkeys , or other authentication, just like the old one — Google isn’t going fully passwordless just yet.

Overall, this change should be less controversial than other Google changes we’ve seen, like all of the products it’s given up on or the redesigned Gmail interface . But like it or not — there’s no choice about this one, as explained on the FAQ page . Both Workspace admins and users with personal Google accounts will have no control over the “gradual” rollout, which starts today, February 21st, and is scheduled for completion on March 4th, 2024. The only way you might see the old login page after that is if you’re using an older browser.

Google Gemini: Everything you need to know about the new generative AI platform

give me to google

Google’s trying to make waves with Gemini, a flagship suite of generative AI models, apps and services. But while Gemini appears to be promising in a few aspects, it’s falling short in others — as our informal review revealed .

So what is Gemini? How can you use it? And how does it stack up to the competition?

To make it easier to keep up with the latest Gemini developments, we’ve put together this handy guide, which we’ll keep updated as new Gemini models and features are released.

What is Gemini?

Gemini is Google’s long-promised , next-gen GenAI model family, developed by Google’s AI research labs DeepMind and Google Research. It comes in three flavors:

  • Gemini Ultra , the flagship Gemini model.
  • Gemini Pro , a “lite” Gemini model.
  • Gemini Nano , a smaller “distilled” model that runs on mobile devices like the Pixel 8 Pro .

All Gemini models were trained to be “natively multimodal” — in other words, able to work with and use more than just words. They were pretrained and fine-tuned on a variety of audio, images and videos, a large set of codebases and text in different languages.

This sets Gemini apart from models such as Google’s own LaMDA , which was trained exclusively on text data. LaMDA can’t understand or generate anything other than text (e.g., essays, email drafts), but that isn’t the case with Gemini models.

What’s the difference between the Gemini apps and Gemini models?

Google's Bard

Google, proving once again that it lacks a knack for branding, didn’t make it clear from the outset that Gemini is separate and distinct from the Gemini apps on the web and mobile (formerly Bard). The Gemini apps are simply an interface through which certain Gemini models can be accessed — think of it as a client for Google’s GenAI.

Incidentally, the Gemini apps and models are also totally independent from Imagen 2 , Google’s text-to-image model that’s available in some of the company’s dev tools and environments. Don’t worry — you’re not the only one confused by this.

What can Gemini do?

Because the Gemini models are multimodal, they can in theory perform a range of multimodal tasks, from transcribing speech to captioning images and videos to generating artwork. Few of these capabilities have reached the product stage yet (more on that later), but Google’s promising all of them — and more — at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Of course, it’s a bit hard to take the company at its word.

Google seriously underdelivered with the original Bard launch. And more recently it ruffled feathers with a video purporting to show Gemini’s capabilities that turned out to have been heavily doctored and was more or less aspirational.

Google’s best Gemini demo was faked

Still, assuming Google is being more or less truthful with its claims, here’s what the different tiers of Gemini will be able to do once they reach their full potential:

Gemini Ultra

Google says that Gemini Ultra — thanks to its multimodality — can be used to help with things like physics homework, solving problems step-by-step on a worksheet and pointing out possible mistakes in already filled-in answers.

Gemini Ultra can also be applied to tasks such as identifying scientific papers relevant to a particular problem, Google says — extracting information from those papers and “updating” a chart from one by generating the formulas necessary to re-create the chart with more recent data.

Gemini Ultra technically supports image generation, as alluded to earlier. But that capability hasn’t made its way into the productized version of the model yet — perhaps because the mechanism is more complex than how apps such as ChatGPT generate images. Rather than feed prompts to an image generator (like DALL-E 3 , in ChatGPT’s case), Gemini outputs images “natively,” without an intermediary step.

Gemini Ultra is available as an API through Vertex AI, Google’s fully managed AI developer platform, and AI Studio, Google’s web-based tool for app and platform developers. It also powers the Gemini apps — but not for free. Access to Gemini Ultra through what Google calls Gemini Advanced requires subscribing to the Google One AI Premium Plan, priced at $20 per month.

The AI Premium Plan also connects Gemini to your wider Google Workspace account — think emails in Gmail, documents in Docs, presentations in Sheets and Google Meet recordings. That’s useful for, say, summarizing emails or having Gemini capture notes during a video call.

Google says that Gemini Pro is an improvement over LaMDA in its reasoning, planning and understanding capabilities.

An independent study by Carnegie Mellon and BerriAI researchers found that Gemini Pro is indeed better than OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 at handling longer and more complex reasoning chains. But the study also found that, like all large language models, Gemini Pro particularly struggles with math problems involving several digits, and users have found plenty of examples of bad reasoning and mistakes.

Early impressions of Google’s Gemini aren’t great

Google’s promised improvements, though — and the first arrived in the form of Gemini 1.5 Pro .

Designed to be a drop-in replacement, Gemini 1.5 Pro (in preview at present) is improved in a number of areas compared with its predecessor, perhaps most significantly in the amount of data that it can process. Gemini 1.5 Pro can (in limited private preview) take in ~700,000 words, or ~30,000 lines of code — 35x the amount Gemini 1.0 Pro can handle. And — the model being multimodal — it’s not limited to text. Gemini 1.5 Pro can analyze up to 11 hours of audio or an hour of video in a variety of different languages, albeit slowly (e.g., searching for a scene in a one-hour video takes 30 seconds to a minute of processing).

Gemini Pro is also available via API in Vertex AI to accept text as input and generate text as output. An additional endpoint, Gemini Pro Vision, can process text and imagery — including photos and video — and output text along the lines of OpenAI’s GPT-4 with Vision model.

Gemini

Within Vertex AI, developers can customize Gemini Pro to specific contexts and use cases using a fine-tuning or “grounding” process. Gemini Pro can also be connected to external, third-party APIs to perform particular actions.

Google brings Gemini Pro to Vertex AI

In AI Studio, there’s workflows for creating structured chat prompts using Gemini Pro. Developers have access to both Gemini Pro and the Gemini Pro Vision endpoints, and they can adjust the model temperature to control the output’s creative range and provide examples to give tone and style instructions — and also tune the safety settings.

Gemini Nano

Gemini Nano is a much smaller version of the Gemini Pro and Ultra models, and it’s efficient enough to run directly on (some) phones instead of sending the task to a server somewhere. So far it powers two features on the Pixel 8 Pro: Summarize in Recorder and Smart Reply in Gboard.

The Recorder app, which lets users push a button to record and transcribe audio, includes a Gemini-powered summary of your recorded conversations, interviews, presentations and other snippets. Users get these summaries even if they don’t have a signal or Wi-Fi connection available — and in a nod to privacy, no data leaves their phone in the process.

Gemini Nano is also in Gboard, Google’s keyboard app, as a developer preview . There, it powers a feature called Smart Reply, which helps to suggest the next thing you’ll want to say when having a conversation in a messaging app. The feature initially only works with WhatsApp but will come to more apps in 2024, Google says.

Is Gemini better than OpenAI’s GPT-4?

Google has several times touted Gemini’s superiority on benchmarks, claiming that Gemini Ultra exceeds current state-of-the-art results on “30 of the 32 widely used academic benchmarks used in large language model research and development.” The company says that Gemini Pro, meanwhile, is more capable at tasks like summarizing content, brainstorming and writing than GPT-3.5.

But leaving aside the question of whether benchmarks really indicate a better model, the scores Google points to appear to be only marginally better than OpenAI’s corresponding models. And — as mentioned earlier — some early impressions haven’t been great, with users and academics pointing out that Gemini Pro tends to get basic facts wrong, struggles with translations and gives poor coding suggestions.

How much will Gemini cost?

Gemini Pro is free to use in the Gemini apps and, for now, AI Studio and Vertex AI.

Once Gemini Pro exits preview in Vertex, however, the model will cost $0.0025 per character while output will cost $0.00005 per character. Vertex customers pay per 1,000 characters (about 140 to 250 words) and, in the case of models like Gemini Pro Vision, per image ($0.0025).

Let’s assume a 500-word article contains 2,000 characters. Summarizing that article with Gemini Pro would cost $5. Meanwhile, generating an article of a similar length would cost $0.1.

Ultra pricing has yet to be announced.

Where can you try Gemini?

The easiest place to experience Gemini Pro is in the Gemini apps . Pro and Ultra are answering queries in a range of languages.

Gemini Pro and Ultra are also accessible in preview in Vertex AI via an API. The API is free to use “within limits” for the time being and supports certain regions, including Europe, as well as features like chat functionality and filtering.

With AI Studio, Google launches an easy-to-use tool for developing apps and chatbots based on its Gemini model

Elsewhere, Gemini Pro and Ultra can be found in AI Studio. Using the service, developers can iterate prompts and Gemini-based chatbots and then get API keys to use them in their apps — or export the code to a more fully featured IDE.

Duet AI for Developers , Google’s suite of AI-powered assistance tools for code completion and generation, is now using Gemini models. And Google’s brought Gemini models to its dev tools for Chrome and Firebase mobile dev platform.

Gemini Nano is on the Pixel 8 Pro — and will come to other devices in the future. Developers interested in incorporating the model into their Android apps can sign up  for a sneak peek.

Google’s hidden ai diversity prompts lead to outcry over historically inaccurate images, inserting depictions of diversity into ai images creates revisionist history, critics say..

Benj Edwards - Feb 22, 2024 4:43 pm UTC

Generations from Gemini AI from the prompt,

On Thursday morning, Google announced it was pausing its Gemini AI image-synthesis feature in response to criticism that the tool was inserting diversity into its images in a historically inaccurate way, such as depicting multi-racial Nazis and medieval British kings with unlikely nationalities.

Further Reading

"We're already working to address recent issues with Gemini's image generation feature. While we do this, we're going to pause the image generation of people and will re-release an improved version soon," wrote Google in a statement Thursday morning.

As more people on X began to pile on Google for being " woke ," the Gemini generations inspired conspiracy theories that Google was purposely discriminating against white people and offering revisionist history to serve political goals. Beyond that angle, as The Verge points out , some of these inaccurate depictions "were essentially erasing the history of race and gender discrimination."

A Gemini AI image generator result for

Wednesday night, Elon Musk chimed in on the politically charged debate by posting a cartoon depicting AI progress as having two paths, one with "Maximum truth-seeking" on one side (next to an xAI logo for his company) and "Woke Racist" on the other, beside logos for OpenAI and Gemini.

This isn't the first time a company with an AI image-synthesis product has run into issues with diversity in its outputs. When AI image synthesis launched into the public eye with DALL-E 2 in April 2022, people immediately noticed that the results were often biased due to biased training data. For example, critics complained that prompts often resulted in racist or sexist images ("CEOs" were usually white men, "angry man" resulted in depictions of Black men, just to name a few). To counteract this, OpenAI invented a technique in July 2022 whereby its system would insert terms reflecting diversity (like "Black," "female," or "Asian") into image-generation prompts in a way that was hidden from the user.

Google's Gemini system seems to do something similar, taking a user's image-generation prompt (the instruction, such as "make a painting of the founding fathers") and inserting terms for racial and gender diversity, such as "South Asian" or "non-binary" into the prompt before it is sent to the image-generator model. Someone on X claims to have convinced Gemini to describe how this system works, and it's consistent with our knowledge of how system prompts work with AI models. System prompts are written instructions that tell AI models how to behave, using natural language phrases.

When we tested Meta's " Imagine with Meta AI " image generator in December, we noticed a similar inserted diversity principle at work as an attempt to counteract bias.

A screenshot of a July 2022 post where OpenAI shows off its technique to mitigate race and gender bias in AI image outputs. Google's use of a similar technique led to the controversy.

As the controversy swelled on Wednesday, Google PR wrote, "We're working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately. Gemini's AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that's generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it's missing the mark here."

The episode reflects an ongoing struggle in which AI researchers find themselves stuck in the middle of ideological and cultural battles online. Different factions demand different results from AI products (such as avoiding bias or keeping it) with no one cultural viewpoint fully satisfied. It's difficult to provide a monolithic AI model that will serve every political and cultural viewpoint, and some experts recognize that.

"We need a free and diverse set of AI assistants for the same reasons we need a free and diverse press," wrote Meta's chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, on X. "They must reflect the diversity of languages, culture, value systems, political opinions, and centers of interest across the world."

When OpenAI went through these issues in 2022, its technique for diversity insertion led to some awkward generations at first, but because OpenAI was a relatively small company (compared to Google) taking baby steps into a new field, those missteps didn't attract as much attention. Over time, OpenAI has refined its system prompts , now included with ChatGPT and DALL-E 3 , to purposely include diversity in its outputs while mostly avoiding the situation Google is now facing. That took time and iteration, and Google will likely go through the same trial-and-error process, but on a very large public stage. To fix it, Google could modify its system instructions to avoid inserting diversity when the prompt involves a historical subject, for example.

On Wednesday, Gemini staffer Jack Kawczyk seemed to recognize this and wrote , " We are aware that Gemini is offering inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions, and we are working to fix this immediately. As part of our AI principles https:// ai.google/responsibility /principles/ , we design our image generation capabilities to reflect our global user base, and we take representation and bias seriously. We will continue to do this for open ended prompts (images of a person walking a dog are universal!) Historical contexts have more nuance to them and we will further tune to accommodate that. This is part of the alignment process - iteration on feedback."

Google said Thursday it would “pause” its Gemini chatbot’s image generation tool after it was widely panned for creating “diverse” images that were not historically or factually accurate — such as black Vikings, female popes and Native Americans among the Founding Fathers .

Social media users had blasted Gemini as “absurdly woke” and “unusable” after requests to generate representative images for subjects resulted in the bizarrely revisionist pictures.

“We’re already working to address recent issues with Gemini’s image generation feature,” Google said in a statement posted on X. “While we do this, we’re going to pause the image generation of people and will re-release an improved version soon.”

Examples included an AI image of a black man who appeared to represent George Washington, complete with a white powdered wig and Continental Army uniform, and a Southeast Asian woman dressed in papal attire even though all 266 popes throughout history have been white men.

Google Gemini

In another shocking example uncovered by the Verge , Gemini even generated “diverse” representations of Nazi-era German soldiers, including an Asian woman and a black man decked out in 1943 military garb.

Since Google has not published the parameters that govern the Gemini chatbot’s behavior, it is difficult to get a clear explanation of why the software was inventing diverse versions of historical figures and events.

William A. Jacobson, a Cornell University Law professor and founder of the Equal Protection Project, a watchdog group told The Post: “In the name of anti-bias, actual bias is being built into the systems.”

“This is a concern not just for search results, but real-world applications where ‘bias free’ algorithm testing actually is building bias into the system by targeting end results that amount to quotas.”

The problem may come down to Google’s “training process” for the “large-language model” that powers Gemini’s image tool, according to Fabio Motoki, a lecturer at the UK’s University of East Anglia who co-authored a paper last year that  found a noticeable left-leaning bias in ChatGPT.

“Remember that reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) is about people telling the model what is better and what is worse, in practice shaping its ‘reward’ function – technically, its loss function,” Motoki told The Post.

“So, depending on which people Google is recruiting, or which instructions Google is giving them, it could lead to this problem.”

It was a significant misstep for search giant, which had just rebranded its main AI chatbot from Bard earlier this month and introduced heavily touted new features — including image generation.

Google Gemini

The blunder also came days after OpenAI, which operates the popular ChatGPT, introduced a new AI tool called Sora that creates videos based on users’ text prompts.

Google had earlier admitted that the chatbot’s erratic behavior needed to be fixed.

“We’re working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately,” Jack Krawczyk, Google’s senior director of product management for Gemini experiences, told The Post.

“Gemini’s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it’s missing the mark here.”

The Post has reached out to Google for further comment.

When asked by The Post to provide its trust and safety guidelines, Gemini acknowledged that they were not “publicly disclosed due to technical complexities and intellectual property considerations.”.

Google Gemini

The chatbot in its responses to prompts also had admitted it was aware of “criticisms that Gemini might have prioritized forced diversity in its image generation, leading to historically inaccurate portrayals.”

“The algorithms behind image generation models are complex and still under development,” Gemini said. “They may struggle to understand the nuances of historical context and cultural representation, leading to inaccurate outputs.”

Google pauses Gemini’s ability to generate people after overcorrecting for diversity in historical images

The ai tool produced images of nazis and america’s founding fathers as people of color..

Google said Thursday it’s pausing its Gemini chatbot’s ability to generate people. The move comes after viral social posts showed the AI tool overcorrecting for diversity, producing “historical” images of Nazis, America’s Founding Fathers and the Pope as people of color.

“We’re already working to address recent issues with Gemini’s image generation feature,” Google posted on X ( via The New York Times ). “While we do this, we’re going to pause the image generation of people and will re-release an improved version soon.”

The X user @JohnLu0x posted screenshots of Gemini’s results for the prompt, “Generate an image of a 1943 German Solidier.” (Their misspelling of “Soldier” was intentional to trick the AI into bypassing its content filters to generate otherwise blocked Nazi images.) The generated results appear to show Black, Asian and Indigenous soldiers wearing Nazi uniforms.

Still real real broke pic.twitter.com/FrPBrYi47v — John L. (@JohnLu0x) February 21, 2024

Other social users criticized Gemini for producing images for the prompt, “Generate a glamour shot of a [ethnicity] couple.” It successfully spit out images when using “Chinese,” “Jewish” or “South African” prompts but refused to produce results for “white.” “I cannot fulfill your request due to the potential for perpetuating harmful stereotypes and biases associated with specific ethnicities or skin tones,” Gemini responded to the latter request.

“John L.,” who helped kickstart the backlash, theorizes that Google applied a well-intended but lazily tacked-on solution to a real problem. “Their system prompt to add diversity to portrayals of people isn’t very smart (it doesn’t account for gender in historically male roles like pope; doesn’t account for race in historical or national depictions),” the user posted. After the internet’s anti-“woke” brigade latched onto their posts, the user clarified that they support diverse representation but believe Google’s “stupid move” was that it failed to do so “in a nuanced way.”

Before pausing Gemini’s ability to produce people, Google wrote, “We’re working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately. Gemini’s Al image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it’s missing the mark here.”

The episode could be seen as a (much less subtle) callback to the launch of Bard in 2023 . Google’s original AI chatbot got off to a rocky start when an advertisement for the chatbot on Twitter (now X) included an inaccurate “fact” about the James Webb Space Telescope .

As Google often does, it rebranded Bard in hopes of giving it a fresh start. Coinciding with a big performance and feature update, the company renamed the chatbot Gemini earlier this month as the company races to hold its ground against OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot — both of which pose an existential threat to its search engine (and, therefore, advertising revenue).

Today, President Biden announced the approval of $1.2 billion in student debt cancellation for almost 153,000 borrowers currently enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) repayment plan. The Biden-Harris Administration has now approved nearly $138 billion in student debt cancellation for almost 3.9 million borrowers through more than two dozen executive actions. The borrowers receiving relief are the first to benefit from a SAVE plan policy that provides debt forgiveness to borrowers who have been in repayment after as little as 10 years and took out $12,000 or less in student loans. Originally planned for July, the Biden-Harris Administration implemented this provision of SAVE and is providing relief to borrowers nearly six months ahead of schedule.

From Day One of his Administration, President Biden vowed to fix the student loan system and make sure higher education is a pathway to the middle class – not a barrier to opportunity. Already, the President has cancelled more student debt than any President in history – delivering lifechanging relief to students and families – and has created the most affordable student loan repayment plan ever: the SAVE plan. While Republicans in Congress and their allies try to block President Biden every step of the way, the Biden-Harris Administration continues to cancel student debt for millions of borrowers, and is leaving no stone unturned in the fight to give more borrowers breathing room on their student loans.

Thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration’s SAVE plan, starting today, the Administration will be cancelling debt for borrowers who are enrolled in the SAVE plan, have been in repayment for at least 10 years and took out $12,000 or less in loans for college. For every additional $1,000 a borrower initially borrowed, they will receive relief after an additional year of payments. For example, a borrower enrolled in SAVE who took out $14,000 or less in federal loans to earn an associate’s degree in biotechnology would receive full debt relief starting this week if they have been in repayment for 12 years. The U.S. Department of Education (Department) identified nearly 153,000 borrowers who are enrolled in SAVE plan who will have their debt cancelled starting this week, and those borrowers will receive an email today from President Biden informing them of their imminent relief. Next week, the Department of Education will also be reaching out directly to borrowers who are eligible for early relief but not currently enrolled in the SAVE Plan to encourage them to enroll as soon as possible. This shortened time to forgiveness will particularly help community college and other borrowers with smaller loans and put many on track to being free of student debt faster than ever before. Under the Biden-Harris Administration’s SAVE plan, 85 percent of future community college borrowers will be debt free within 10 years. The Department will continue to regularly identify and discharge other borrowers eligible for relief under this provision on SAVE. Over four million borrowers have a $0 monthly payment under the SAVE Plan Last year, President Biden launched the SAVE plan – the most affordable repayment plan ever. Under the SAVE plan, monthly payments are based on a borrower’s income and family size, not their loan balance. The SAVE plan ensures that if borrowers are making their monthly payments, their balances cannot grow because of unpaid interest. And, starting in July, undergraduate loan payments will be cut in half, capping a borrower’s loan payment at 5% of their discretionary income. Already, 7.5 million borrowers are enrolled in the SAVE Plan, and 4.3 million borrowers have a $0 monthly payment.

Today, the White House Council of Economic Advisers released an issue brief highlighting how low and middle-income borrowers enrolled in SAVE could see significant saving in terms of interest saved over time and principal forgiven as a result of SAVE’s early forgiveness provisions.

President Biden’s Administration has approved student debt relief for nearly 3.9 million Americans through various actions

Today’s announcement builds on the Biden-Harris Administration’s track record of taking historic action to cancel student debt for millions of borrowers. Since taking office, the Biden-Harris Administration has approved debt cancellation for nearly 3.9 million Americans, totaling almost $138 billion in debt relief through various actions. This relief has given borrowers critical breathing room in their daily lives, allowing them to afford other expenses, buy homes, start businesses, or pursue dreams they had to put on hold because of the burden of student loan debt. President Biden remains committed to providing debt relief to as many borrowers as possible, and won’t stop fighting to deliver relief to more Americans.

The Biden-Harris Administration has also taken historic steps to improve the student loan program and make higher education more affordable for more Americans, including:

  • Achieving the largest increases in Pell Grants in over a decade to help families who earn less than $60,000 a year achieve their higher-education goals.
  • Fixing the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program so that borrowers who go into public service get the debt relief they’re entitled to under the law. Before President Biden took office, only 7,000 people ever received debt relief through PSLF. After fixing the program, the Biden-Harris Administration has now cancelled student loan debt for nearly 800,000 public service workers.
  • Cancelling student loan debt for more than 930,000 borrowers who have been in repayment for over 20 years but never got the relief they earned because of administrative failures with Income-Driven Repayment Plans.
  • Pursuing an alternative path to deliver student debt relief to as many borrowers as possible in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision striking down the Administration’s original debt relief plan. Last week, the Department of Education released proposed regulatory text to cancel student debt for borrowers who are experiencing hardship paying back their student loans, and late last year released proposals to cancel student debt for borrowers who: owe more than they borrowed, first entered repayment 20 or 25 years ago, attended low quality programs, and who would be eligible for loan forgiveness through income-driven repayment programs like SAVE but have not applied.
  • Holding colleges accountable for leaving students with unaffordable debts.

It’s easy to enroll in SAVE. Borrowers should go to studentaid.gov/save to start saving.

2 officers, 1 first responder killed responding to domestic violence call in Minnesota; shooter also dead

Two police officers and a first responder were killed in Burnsville, Minnesota, responding to “a call of a family in danger” Sunday morning, according Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

The city of Burnsville released a statement identifying those killed as officers Paul Elmstrand, 27, and Matthew Ruge, 27, as well as Adam Finseth, 40, who worked as a firefighter and paramedic. Another officer, Adam Medlicott, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We must never take for granted the bravery and sacrifices our police officers and first responders make every day,” Walz said. “My heart is with their families today and the entire State of Minnesota stands with Burnsville.”

Medlicott was shot at the scene and is expected to survive, said Drew Evans, the superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, and Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz.

"Our folks come to work every day and are willing to give the ultimate sacrifice of their life, but no one expects it to happen," Burnsville Fire Department Chief BJ Jungmann said at the Sunday press conference. He added that it was a "tragic day" and that "we are all grieving."

Schwartz echoed that sentiment, calling the fallen officers "heroes."

"Our police officers and our fire paramedics, they come to work every day. They do it willingly. They know that they might have to give up their life for their partners, for someone else. They know they have to give up their life sometimes, and they do it anyways," Schwartz said. "And you cannot understand it unless you’re in the profession."

According to a statement from the city, police were called to a residence at 1:50 a.m. local time Sunday over a report that an armed man was barricaded inside with family members.

Evans called it a "domestic violence situation" and said there were seven children, aged 2-15, found inside the home with the suspect. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said earlier on social media that it responded to a scene “where there have been reports of officers involved in a domestic-related shooting.”

Evans said officers negotiated with the suspect while additional officers responded to the scene.

During those negotiations, the man opened fired, killing Elmstrand, Ruge and Finseth, and injuring Medlicott.

Police gathered in a Burnsville, Minn., neighborhood on Feb. 18, 2024.

Evans said investigators were unsure of the "exact exchange of gunfire that occurred" between the suspect and "several officers" who returned fire. He added that the suspect had "several guns and large amounts of ammunitions and shot at the police officers from multiple positions within the home," including the "upper portion" and main floor of the residence.

Officers also took fire from outside the home, Evans said.

At least one of the officers was shot inside the home, he said, adding that officials were still "piecing together" whether the two other officers were shot inside or outside.

The alleged shooter was reported dead around 8 a.m., and the other family members safely left the home later in the morning, the city statement said.

There had been no prior calls for service at the home or regarding the suspected shooter, Evans said.

He asked for patience while the department investigates the incident and noted the investigation was at its initial stages.

“We’re hurting as a team and as a family, particularly for those individuals who have chosen our police and our fire departments as a career to serve this community and to live out day to day what is one of the most important things here in Burnsville, and that's keeping our community safe," Burnsville City Manager Gregg Lindberg said at the press conference.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar said in a statement that she was "devastated" by the news that two police officers and a first responder were "killed in the line of duty." She added in a post on social media site X that she attended a vigil Sunday night in their honor.

"Our police officers and first responders put their lives on the line to keep all of us safe. We will never forget their sacrifice. My heart goes out to the loved ones of the victims and to the Burnsville community," Klobuchar said.

Both the city of Golden Valley, located 20 miles north of Burnsville, and the West St. Paul police departments offered condolences on social media.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara released a statement calling Sunday a "tragic and heartbreaking day" and offering his condolences "to the loved ones of the police officers and paramedic who were killed, and to the families of every Burnsville first responder."

"The two officers and the paramedic paid the ultimate sacrifice," he said. "On a day like today, I ask that we remember that our first responders are the real heroes among us."

Jim Nash, a Minnesota state representative, also posted to social media about the shooting.

“My heart is heavy for the families of these officers, the community of Burnsville, and for our country because this headline is not unique,” Nash wrote.

A group of state legislators — including state Sen. Jim Carlson, state Sen. Lindsey Port, state Rep. Kaela Berg, state Rep. Jessica Hanson and state Rep. Liz Reyer — released a statement Sunday afternoon, saying, “Our hearts ache for the first responders who died in the line of duty this morning,” and calling the deceased “beloved community members, neighbors, and friends.”

“We stand in support of the children and family of those involved in the domestic abuse call and this traumatic incident,” the statement continued. The state lawmakers noted that “these are some of the most dangerous calls that our officers respond to” and that they plan to work with law enforcement and survivors to make them safer for everyone.

“Burnsville is a place where we take care of each other, lean on our neighbors in times of need, and act together to make our city the best it can be,” the lawmakers said.

Incorporated in 1964, Burnsville is a suburb located south of both Minneapolis and St. Paul. According to the city’s website, it’s the ninth largest suburb in the metro area, with more than 64,000 residents.
