Teaching Character Words by Using Zodiac Signs

Zodiac Signs have become very popular worldwide.  Whether you believe it or not, astrology is a truly good conversation starter and is good teaching material in English language classrooms.  We can get students to read, think, talk and write about themselves and other people by using signs. Here, I would like to offer a few learning activities to help students build up character words more easily and quickly increase their ability to describe other people’s personalities.

Introduction

Level: intermediate, step 1.  prepare a handout of zodiac-sign descriptions like the following., step 2. find out which sign of the zodiac students were born under., step 3. do you agree or do you disagree with these personality description words, step 4.  share with peers (1), step 5.  share with peers (2), step 6.  share with peers (3), step 7.  collaboration task (1).

  • Do astrological signs tell you who you are?
  • Are astrological signs a mirror of oneself?
  • Do you believe in astrological signs?

Step 8.  Collaboration Task (2)

Step 9.  follow–up homework: personality profile.

FREE Horoscopes/Zodiac Sign Worksheets

Oddly enough, this is a popular esl topic even though for most people it is not a common subject. if you are unsure of where to begin or are looking for some great practice activities, check out the 22 available worksheets on horoscopes and zodiac signs . this clever horoscope worksheet allows students to practice using the future tense to write horoscopes. while the names of the different zodiac signs are challenging, this is a creative way to introduce the topic of horoscopes and allow students to practice using an important tense. rather than having each student create a horoscope for all twelve signs, consider breaking the class into groups for the activity or giving each sign to only one or two students to work on. take a look at some other worksheets in this section for material better suited to high level learners. some people would say that esl students have no need to learn about their zodiac sign or horoscope however this depends on the country in which you are teaching. in some locations this may be important and thus a more common topic of conversation. you can tie this in with other topics such as calendars or even romance depending on the age and interests of your students. if your school has a monthly newsletter, consider asking the principal to include one of the horoscopes your students wrote in the next edition. read more... ...less.

Episode 13 - Horoscopes

Julia and Sammy read their horoscopes. What is their future together?

Julia : I'll have this magazine, please. How much is it? Shop assistant : It's 95 pence. Julia : Here you are. Shop assistant : Thanks. ... Here's your change, 5p. Sammy : A packet of chewing gum and two cans of cola, please. Shop assistant : That's 65p and two pounds 20 ... That's two pounds 85, please. Sammy : Here you are. Shop assistant : Five pounds. So that's one pound, two pounds and 15 pence change. ... Oh, lovely!

Sammy : What magazine's that? Julia : It's a gossip magazine. It's about famous people. Look! Sammy : Oh, yeah. That's Paul McCartney. Julia : And there's an article here about the Royal Family. Sammy : Oh! Horoscopes! I love horoscopes. When's your birthday? Julia : The 18th of June. Sammy : So you're a Gemini. Julia : When's your birthday? Sammy : Fifteenth of November. I'm a Scorpio. Julia : What does it say about me? Sammy : It says, 'Today you are with the love of your life.' Julia : Really?! And what does it say about you? Sammy : It says, 'Today the love of your life is with you.' Julia : Wow! That's amazing. Let me see. ... It doesn't say that! Mine says, 'Problems with money. A good day to stay at home.' Sammy : Ah, does it? Julia : And yours says, 'A bad day for love.' Sammy : Well, it's silly anyway. It isn't true. Chinese zodiac's much better. When were you born? Julia : In 1991. Sammy : So you're a goat. Julia : Well, that's not very nice. Sammy : Oh, it is! Goats are great. They're artistic and sociable. Julia : And you? Sammy : I was born in 1990. I'm a horse. Julia : And horses are ...? Sammy : Of course. They are intelligent, strong and honest. Julia : Honest?

WHERE HAS THE VIDEO GONE?

Hi sevesaran,

I've just checked the video and it seems to be working fine for me. It may have been a temporary problem.

Can you still not see the video? If you can't, how about the other videos in this section - do they also not appear? You could try watching the videos on another device or using a different web browser to see if that works. If you cannot see the videos at all, another possibility is that they are blocked in your region.

I hope you can find a way to view the video.

Conversation

Tags: advanced , describing people , future simple , intermediate , love

The Horoscopes ESL conversation activity is a fun way to start discussions about personality traits and/or the future.

Depending on your target language, you can ask students to discuss the personality traits for each zodiac sign, the horoscope predictions for each sign, or both (as described below). The following resources can be used for each option:

– Zodiac Sign Personality Traits – Horoscopes

Divide the class into small groups of two, three or four students.

  • Start by asking the students what they know about zodiac signs. Do they know their sign? What do they think about horoscopes? Have they ever read one?
  • Write/project the personality traits for each zodiac sign on the board.
  • In their groups, students discuss how well they think their sign description matches their personality. They then talk about if they know anyone with each zodiac sign, and whether those people’s personalities match with their sign descriptions.
  • Each group feeds back to the whole class on how well the traits matched them and the people they knew.
  • Next, dictate a horoscope for each sign represented in the class. Each student makes notes for their sign. Alternatively, if students have smartphones, they could look the information up themselves (using the link provided above).
  • The students take a moment individually to think of some predictions for themselves using their horoscope. They should try and link the horoscope to things happening in their lives as much as possible.
  • They then summarise their horoscope for a partner and explain their predictions about they what they think will happen to them in the coming days/weeks.
  • The partner listens, and suggests further predictions about what might happen.
  • Optionally, the students can then feed back to the whole class on their partner’s horoscope and predictions.

Target Language

The Horoscopes ESL conversation is a fun discussion topic for any intermediate or advanced class. However, it fits well with two language topics in particular.

The zodiac personality traits part is great for practising describing people vocabulary. Students are required to understand the traits given and should suggest use synonyms and antonyms of those words when comparing them with real people. If you’re looking for an extension to practise this language, consider discussing Chinese birth years as well.

Another common language focus is the future simple . In this case, place  the emphasis on the horoscopes and the predictions made from them.

Aside from these two main topics, the Horoscopes ESL conversation can also work well if you link the horoscopes to a discussion on the topic of love . The link provided above has an option for this.

Got a picture or video of this activity in action? How about snapping one next time you use it? We'd love to showcase your submissions- find out more here .

Debate: The end of reading? - Part one: What are we teaching, reading or English?

This is the most adjective-rich lesson in Real English ® , providing us with ordinary vocabulary which is rarely found in beginner lessons. This is one reason why this lesson begins with 3 pages of vocabulary illustrations.

There's nothing complicated or esoteric about adjectives such as "ostentatious", for example (to take the most extreme example used in this lesson). Ordinary Americans and British people use it as part of their everyday speech. The trick (for us) is to come up with a picture and a text which illustrates its meaning, allowing students to make the connection to their native language and that used by the people they meet here.

Concerning astrology, not many people we met seemed to take it seriously, except for enthusiasts like Jenny in Exercise 14. On the other hand, almost everyone in English-speaking countries is interested in their "star sign". It has proved to be an interesting vehicle for the vocabulary it elicits.

3 Zodiac Signs Learn An Important Lesson About Love Before The Weekend

We may just have to get used to love on new terms..

By Ruby Miranda Written on Feb 21, 2024

3 Zodiac Signs Learn An Important Lesson About Love Before The Weekend

Three zodiac signs learn an important lesson about love before the weekend thanks to the transit Venus conjunct Mars in Aquarius. The sign of Aquarius rules our higher, more intuitive mind, and it helps us to see things we need to see about relationships, love and self-sufficiency.

We may feel as though we've bit off more than we could chew on this day, February 22, 2024. that is because we have a few ideas about love that don't match our current relationship and situation. Yes, three zodiac signs will make a mistake in judgment on this day but it will teach a valuable lesson in love.

What we're going to find on this day, February 22, 2024, is that we are spectacularly off base. This more than likely comes to us during a conversation that we will be having with a person that we assume 'likes' us back.

While they may like us, they do not 'like' us in the way we want them to, which is romantically and with devotion. Alas, that's not the case during Venus conjunct Mars. For three zodiac signs, the slam dunk rejection will be shocking and surprising.

We just have bad timing on this day, and that's OK. Of course, it won't feel OK at the time, but how could we know? We are riding on a wave of love that has us believing that we are invincible and wondering how on earth this person could NOT love us the same way we love them.

We'll learn the difference starting February 22, 2024, and it may take through the weekend to really get it. We may just have to get used to love that comes on different terms. It's all OK.

Three zodiac signs learn an important lesson about love before the weekend:

(March 21 - April 19)

The only reason your timing feels so off in love on this day, February 22, 2024, is that you want things with this person now. It's not that you aren't going to get what you want because, with Venus conjunct Mars in the sky, you will more than likely get everything you want. However, this day will teach you that you must wait for love like the rest of the crowd. That may anger you, Aries.

You are accustomed to thinking of yourself as irresistible. When it comes to love and romance, you already know what you've got and how valuable you are in being in a love relationship.

What constitutes bad timing on this day, February 22, 2024, is the idea that you just can't wait to tell your friends about your soon-to-be partner , but the relationship really needs more time to grow. You prefer to let love be impulsive and direct, but your cautious partner worries this could endanger the relationship.

Still, you are pretty talented when it comes to rectifying your desires. If having to wait is your only problem on this day, then in a way, you're doing pretty good. The thing is, there's probably not a lesson in waiting for love that you will actually like because you already know you're in love. What you don't know is how to wait. It's that simple. Venus conjunct Mars shows you that your love takes time. You also don't really care that it takes time since you know what you want now.

(April 20 - May 20)

Your feeling about how this day, February 22, 2024, goes down in love is one of resignation. It is what it is, and that's how you feel. You realize that you didn't give in to someone else's demands for what they felt was required of you. Because you didn't allow yourself to be manipulated , they have decided to withhold their love — love you wanted, but they say you didn't try for. It's all OK in your mind as you feel this is just one relationship, and infinitely more relationship opportunities await you.

That's one great thing about you, Taurus. You never really let a malicious person get you down . On February 22, 2024, if you're told that someone you want is no longer available to you, you'll move on. You find it ridiculous to be told an ultimatum and that this has happened because you didn't act at a time when you should have.

OK, what can you do? Your attitude gets help during Venus conjunct Mars. While you aren't happy that things didn't work out, you know it's no biggie in the long run. You probably dodged a bullet and see the red flags for what they are.

Things like 'bad timing' really don't exist in your world. It's not the way it does in other people's worlds. You are happy 'as is, 'and yes, you will miss them because you cared. Oh, you are learning many lessons from all of this. You are absolutely going to pay closer attention to the red flags in the future. What you refuse to do is suffer for it, and good for you, Taurus.

(August 23 - September 22)

If your timing is off on this day, February 24, 2024, it's because something confused you. While you aren't fond of admitting to confusion, you'll privately acknowledge that maybe in the future, you need to be more alert and attentive when the big info comes into your life. You are used to sharing your burden with a romantic partner. So, when they aren't around, you aren't happy to take full responsibility without them doing their part.

During the transit of Venus conjunct Mars, you will want to storm text them for missing out on a perfect opportunity. Still, you will immediately justify their behavior by trying to convince yourself that being alone and independent is what you really want.

So, during Venus conjunct with Mars, you will accept what you don't want. You'll tell yourself that this is exactly what you DID want all along.

You will, however, learn a great lesson on this day, February 24, 2024. That is, you really do need to pay closer attention at times, as your partner is not your keeper. Even though they love you and enjoy taking care of you, you are the one who needs to make the right choices for yourself when your partner is not there. Don't get used to someone else doing things with you all the time , as that will always lead to codependency, and you do love to be autonomous even when you're in love.
