The Best Strategies for Vocabulary Lessons In 2nd Grade

It is important for us to teach vocabulary lessons all year, every year until… forever? Let’s get started!

Have you ever been in an adult conversation and you don’t know what a word someone said means? How often do you ask them to clarify it and explain rather than just nodding and looking up the word later? I am in a group with many people who often worry that they will look stupid, so I figure it out the best I can and Google it later!

We expect our students to look for new vocabulary all the time, so we need to do that as adults too! We need to create an environment in our classroom (and in our lives) that we celebrate not knowing a word and learning something new by identifying that unknown word with a vocabulary strategy !

Introducing Vocabulary Lessons

If you have been around here for a while, you know my love of connecting reading strategies to real life situations. The reading strategy of identifying and defining vocabulary is an easier one to think of a personal example, but just as meaningful for your students. I usually start my vocabulary lessons with an example of a recent situation where I did not know what a word meant and needed to figure out the definition to understand.

This leads into my emphasis on how we will CELEBRATE finding new words in our classroom! There are tons of ways to do this!

Ways to emphasize the FUN and GOOD in finding new/ unknown words:

  • write the words on a “new vocabulary” wall
  • each student writes on a new words paper in folder (get to share every so often)
  • add a sticker to a chart whenever a new word is found or defined
  • have parents send in pictures of kids with a new word they found outside of school
  • sing/ clap a class new word cheer whenever is identified – “Hey have you heard? We found a new word!”

Have fun with it and choose what fits your class personality!

Scaffolding Vocabulary Lessons to Build Confidence

  • I start my vocabulary lesson s with modeling think alouds of noticing a new words that I am not sure what it means. As part of that interactive shared reading , students practice monitoring their understanding and identifying new words. Then, I provide the definition and we discuss how knowing the definition helps our understanding of the text. This builds their confidence in finding new words and wanting to clarify their meaning.
  • associating the word with a familiar word
  • context clues
  • research- ask someone, use google, look it up in a dictionary

It is important to pick appropriate mentor texts to model the vocabulary strategy that you want to focus on! I have book suggestions and tips for how to do that over on this blog post .

My vocabulary resource has everything you need to get started planning these types of interactive vocabulary lessons with ANY book!

3. Once students are getting confident in participating in the shared reading discussions using the vocabulary strategies. Your vocabulary lessons should shift to more independent practice.

I use both photograph and short paragraph task cards to start my students independently finding and defining new words.

The photograph task cards are specifically designed for students to practice understanding that all words can be defined. They are asked to identify as many words as they can about what it in the picture, then pick some to define. It is more challenging than they realize to think of the definition for everyday objects like a door! I found that this vocabulary activity deepens students understanding of what a definition truly is and how it connects to the word.

There are many ways to structure your vocabulary lessons! I hope that this helps you with ideas and activities for how to teach vocabulary strategies to your primary class!

Commonly Asked Questions

Q: Where do you find the words?

A: The words are high frequency words from grade level texts and tests.

Q: What are tier 2 words?

A: Tier 2 words are words that students will see often, but need to be taught. They are not content specific such a math and science vocabulary. Instead they are words that students will see over and over in their books and on standardized tests.

Q: What do you do with the words from the reading curriculum?

A: Honestly, I used those words for practice with context clues rather than memorization. I found that they were not words that students were regularly seeing in their books anyway. If you do need to add in your basal words, they could easily be added to the vocabulary journal. They just would not appear in the premade assessments.

Vocabulary Lesson Plan

There’s a difference between memorizing a definition and learning what a word means and how to use it.

ELA Common Core Standards Covered

Here are some common core standards that apply.

  • L.9-10.3 Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening.
  • L.9-10.2c   Spell correctly. Knowledge of Language.
  • L.9-10.4b Identify and correctly use patterns of word changes that indicate different meanings or parts of speech (e.g., analyze, analysis, analytical; advocate, advocacy).
  • L.9-10.4c Consult general and specialized reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning, its part of speech, or its etymology.

Vocabulary Lesson Plan Preparation

It doesn’t take a wordsmith to properly prepare for this vocabulary lesson plan.

1. List vocabulary words on the board.

2. Instruct students to copy down the words, leaving at least 5 spaces in between. For some reason, the five spaces in between motivates them. It’s as if they’re thinking, “Finally something different than the same old crap Mr. Boringteach has been doing all year.”

3. Pronounce each word and have students repeat each word. There’s no use in learning a word’s definition and sounding like an idiot trying to pronounce it. My mother had a suitor when I was in high school who mispronounced words all the time. He was one of the nicest men I’ve ever met. His mispronunciations, however, were the subject of many a sardonic slight.

4. Look up each word as a class and write the definition on the board, or instruct students to copy definitions from the board or a dictionary.

5. Explain the meaning of each word, providing relevant examples. Your students will think you’re cool for actually teaching them the words. OK, maybe cool is too strong a word.

Vocabulary Lesson Plan Procedures

For each word, students will provide the following:

  • part of speech
  • picture or symbol

Example: dog (n):

  • a four-legged furry creature that enjoys licking itself and barking
  • examples: my dog fluffy, poodle, Scooby Doo
  • synonyms: mutt, canine, pooch
  • antonym: cat
  • picture: draw a dog
  • sentence: Mark Twain’s dog lost two of its four legs in a circular saw incident in Santo Domingo .

You’re probably wondering how in the world you’re going to grade all this work. Here are some suggestions for grading the work without having to cancel your weekend plans for the next several months.

  • spot check two or three words
  • grade only the sentences or some other category
  • participate in a vocabulary picture or sentence challenge
  • don’t grade them, but allow them to be used on a quiz
