What is ringback tone?

A ringback tone is a service provided by mobile telecommunication companies that allows you to customize the sound that callers hear while they wait for you to answer a call. Instead of the traditional ringing sound, the caller hears a specific audio tone or melody chosen by the subscriber.

When someone makes a call to your mobile phone, the ringback tone is played through the telephone network to the caller, replacing the standard ringing sound. This feature adds a personal touch to the calling experience and allows you to showcase your personality or preferences through the chosen tune or music.

Ringback tones work on both Android and iPhone devices, as long as you have an active subscription with your telecom provider. You can select a ringback tone from a library of available tones provided by the service or customize your own from your personal music library.

The ringback tone feature is different from the ringtone on your phone, which is the sound that you hear when someone calls you. While the ringtone is determined by the caller’s phone, the ringback tone is chosen by the recipient and heard by the caller.

Overall, ringback tones provide a fun and personalized way to enhance the calling experience and make it more enjoyable for both you and your callers.

Overview of ringback tones

Ringback tones are a popular mobile feature that allows subscribers to personalize the audio heard by the caller while waiting for the call to be answered. This feature is available on both Android and iPhone devices, making it accessible to a wide range of users. Unlike ringtones, which are heard by the phone owner, ringback tones are heard by the caller, creating a unique and customizable experience for both parties involved in the call.

When a caller dials a mobile or cell phone number, they typically hear a ringing sound. With the ringback tone service, this traditional ring is replaced with a customized tune or melody chosen by the phone owner. This allows individuals to express their personality and preferences through the selection of a specific song, sound, or audio clip.

Ringback tones are offered by telecom service providers as a subscription-based service. Subscribers can choose from a variety of tones available in the provider’s catalog or upload their own audio files to create a personalized ringback tone. This service adds an extra layer of customization and entertainment to the caller’s experience while waiting for the call to be answered.

Ringback tones have become increasingly popular due to their ability to add a touch of personality and entertainment to the calling experience. Whether it’s a favorite song, a funny soundbite, or a popular melody, the ringback tone allows callers to showcase their individuality and set the tone for the conversation before it even begins. This feature not only adds a personal touch to each call but also provides a memorable and enjoyable experience for both the caller and the recipient.

Definition of ringback tone

A ringback tone, also known as a ringtone or caller tune, is a sound or music that plays to the calling party while waiting for the recipient to answer the call. It is a popular feature in the telecommunications industry and is available on mobile phones, particularly those running on Android or iOS operating systems.

When someone dials a mobile phone number, instead of hearing the typical ringing sound, they are greeted with a ringback tone. This audio clip can be a song, instrumental piece, or any other audio content chosen by the phone owner. The purpose of the ringback tone is to provide entertainment or personalization to the calling party while they wait for the call to be answered.

To have a ringback tone, a subscription to a ringback tone service is usually required. Users can choose from a wide range of ringback tone options, including popular songs, classical music, or even custom recordings. These tones can be purchased as a one-time download or as part of a monthly subscription.

The ringback tone is distinct from the ringtone, which is the sound heard by the recipient of the call. While the ringback tone is played to the calling party, the ringtone is what the person receiving the call hears. Both tones can be customized to suit individual preferences.

Overall, the ringback tone offers a fun and personalized touch to the mobile calling experience, allowing users to enhance their phone’s audio ambiance and make a lasting impression on callers.

How ringback tones work

How ringback tones work

A ringback tone is a service offered by telecom providers that allows cell phone users to personalize the sound that callers hear while waiting for the call to be answered. Instead of the traditional ringing sound that callers typically hear, a ringback tone plays a selected tune or music. This feature is available on both Android and iPhone devices and can be set up through a subscription with the mobile service provider.

When someone calls a phone with a ringback tone service activated, instead of hearing a normal ringing sound, they will hear a melody or audio clip that has been selected by the phone owner. This audio plays while the call is being connected and provides a personalized touch to the caller’s experience. It can be a song, instrumental, or any other sound chosen by the user.

To set up a ringback tone on a mobile phone, the user typically needs to subscribe to the service provided by their telecom provider. This may involve selecting a specific ringback tone from a catalog provided by the service provider or even uploading their own custom audio file. Once the service is activated, callers will be able to hear the chosen ringback tone when they call the user’s phone number.

The use of ringback tones adds a level of individuality and personalization to phone calls. The caller is greeted with a unique sound instead of the standard ringing noise, which can make the calling experience more enjoyable and memorable. Ringback tones have become a popular feature among mobile phone users, allowing them to showcase their favorite music or tunes and express their personality in a creative and personalized way.

Evolution of ringback tones

The concept of ringback tones has significantly evolved over the years, keeping pace with advancements in mobile technology. Initially, ringback tones were simple melodies that played when someone called a mobile phone. These tones were limited in variety and usually came pre-installed on the phone or were provided by the telecom service provider.

With the introduction of smartphones like Android and iPhone, the capabilities of ringback tones expanded. Users now had the option to customize their ringback tones by selecting from a wide range of tunes and songs. This allowed individuals to personalize their mobile experience and make their incoming calls more enjoyable.

Furthermore, the subscription-based model for ringback tones gained popularity. Users could now choose to pay a monthly fee to access a larger library of ringback tones, including popular songs from various genres. This shift towards a subscription model gave phone owners greater freedom in selecting the perfect tone to play for their callers.

As technology advanced further, ringback tones started to incorporate more advanced audio features. Users were now able to choose high-quality audio for their ringback tones, ensuring a better listening experience for callers. Additionally, some newer models of mobile phones introduced the ability to assign different ringback tones for specific contacts. This feature enabled individuals to have a unique tone play for important callers or distinguish between personal and work-related calls.

In summary, ringback tones have come a long way since their inception. From simple melodies to customizable tunes and subscription-based services, they have revolutionized the way mobile phones interact with callers. With continuous advancements in technology, it will be exciting to see how ringback tones continue to evolve in the future.

Popular uses of ringback tones

Customized sound: One of the most popular uses of ringback tones is to personalize the sound that callers hear when they call a mobile phone. Instead of the traditional ringing sound, users can choose a ringback tone that reflects their personality, interests, or mood.

Music and tunes: Ringback tones often consist of popular songs or catchy tunes. Users can select their favorite songs or current hits to entertain their callers while waiting for them to answer the call. This adds a touch of musical enjoyment to the calling experience.

Subscription services: Many mobile operators offer ringback tone subscription services, where users can choose from a wide range of ringback tones for a monthly fee. This allows users to regularly change their ringback tone and keep up with the latest music trends.

Android and mobile apps: With the increasing use of smartphones, there are now various applications available that allow users to easily change their ringback tones directly from their Android or mobile devices. These apps provide a convenient way to personalize the ringback tone without any hassle.

Ringing for different callers: Ringback tones can be set to play different melodies or songs based on the caller’s identity. For example, users can set a specific ringback tone for their friends, another one for family members, and a different one for colleagues. This helps users identify the caller before answering the call.

Telecom branding: Ringback tones can also be used as a means of branding by telecom companies. They can offer unique ringback tones that represent their brand and provide a distinct calling experience for their customers. This helps in promoting the telecom service and creating brand recognition.

Personalizing your phone

One of the ways to personalize your mobile phone is by customizing the ringback tone. A ringback tone is the music or melody that a caller hears instead of the traditional ringing sound while waiting for you to answer the call. It allows you to set a unique tone that reflects your personality or interests.

To set a ringback tone, you may need a subscription to a specific service offered by your telecom provider. Different phone models, such as iPhones or Android devices, may have different methods for setting the ringback tone. However, most often, you can access the settings in the phone’s audio or sound menu.

Once you have selected the ringback tone, it will play for the caller as the phone rings on your end. It adds a touch of personalization to your phone and enhances the caller’s experience while waiting for you to answer. The ringback tone can be any audio tune or melody you choose, from popular songs to customized recordings.

This service is popular among mobile phone users who want to make their phone calls more unique and enjoyable. It allows you to express your personal style and interests through the choice of a ringback tone. Some people may prefer soothing melodies, while others may opt for catchy tunes.

Overall, personalizing your phone with a ringback tone is a fun and creative way to customize your mobile experience and make your phone calls more enjoyable for both you and the caller.

Advertising and marketing tool

The ringback tone feature on mobile phones, regardless of whether they are using Android or iPhone, has become a popular advertising and marketing tool for companies and brands. When a caller dials a number, instead of hearing the traditional ringing sound, they are greeted with a personalized music or audio clip known as a ringback tone. This allows companies to promote their products, services, or brand through a caller’s waiting experience.

By subscribing to a ringback tone service, companies can choose a specific melody or tune that represents their brand and create a unique audio experience for callers. This gives brands the opportunity to reinforce their branding and engage with customers even before the call is answered.

For example, a telecom company can use a catchy jingle as their ringback tone, reminding callers of their services and encouraging them to consider their offerings. Similarly, a retailer can use a popular song or music track as their ringback tone, creating a positive association with their brand in the caller’s mind.

Research has shown that ringback tones have a high level of attention and recall among callers, making them an effective advertising tool. Callers tend to pay more attention to the music or audio playing during the call waiting period, which increases the chances of the brand message being received and remembered. This makes ringback tones a valuable marketing strategy for companies looking to engage with their target audience.

Furthermore, ringback tones can be customized based on the caller’s profile or the type of call. For example, a caller from a specific location can be played a region-specific ringback tone, creating a personalized experience. This customization adds a personal touch to the advertising and marketing efforts, making the caller feel valued and increasing brand loyalty.

In summary, ringback tones serve as an effective advertising and marketing tool for companies and brands. By leveraging this mobile feature, companies can promote their products, services, and brand through a caller’s waiting experience, increasing brand visibility and engagement. With the ability to customize ringback tones, companies can create personalized experiences and strengthen their relationship with customers.

Social and cultural expression

The ringback tone service has become more than just a feature on a mobile phone – it has become a form of social and cultural expression. This service allows users to customize the sound that callers hear while waiting for their call to be answered. It provides a unique way for individuals to showcase their personality, interests, and taste in music.

Users can choose from a wide variety of music genres and songs to create their own personalized ringback tone. Whether it’s a popular chart-topping hit, a classic tune, or a niche indie melody, there is something for everyone. This allows users to express their individuality and share their musical preferences with their callers.

The ringback tone service has also become a way for users to stay up to date with the latest trends in music. With the ability to subscribe to monthly or weekly ringback tone packages, users can regularly change their ringback tone to reflect the current popular songs or artists.

Furthermore, the ringback tone service has become a cultural phenomenon, with certain tunes and melodies becoming iconic. Just like a ringtone that instantly identifies the brand of a phone, certain ringback tones have become associated with specific individuals. When someone hears a particular ringback tone, they may immediately think of a certain friend or family member.

Overall, the ringback tone service has transformed the way we communicate through our mobile phones. It has become much more than just a simple ringing sound – it is now a reflection of our personality, a statement of our musical taste, and a cultural marker in our social circles.

Benefits of using ringback tones

1. Personalized caller experience: Ringback tones allow you to customize the audio that callers hear when they call your mobile phone. Instead of the traditional standard ringing sound, you can choose a tune, melody, or song that reflects your personality and style. This personalizes the caller experience and sets you apart from others.

2. Express your mood or interests: Changing your ringback tone allows you to express your current mood or interests. Whether you’re feeling happy, nostalgic, or in the mood for a specific genre of music, you can select a ringback tone that matches your current mood or interests. This adds a fun and dynamic element to your mobile phone experience.

3. Stand out in a crowd: With so many mobile phones around, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish your phone from others. By using a unique ringback tone, you can easily identify your own phone when it rings in a crowded environment. This helps to prevent confusion and ensures that you never miss an important call.

4. Promote your favorite song or artist: If you have a favorite song or artist, using their music as your ringback tone can be a way to support and promote them. Whenever someone calls you, they’ll hear a snippet of the song, creating a subtle reminder of your favorite music. This can also spark conversations and connections with others who share similar musical preferences.

5. Subscription value: Many telecom providers offer ringback tone services as part of their subscription packages. This means that you can enjoy the benefits of using ringback tones without any additional cost. It’s an added value feature that allows you to enhance your mobile phone experience without having to pay extra for it.

Enhancing callers’ experience

Telecom companies are constantly looking for ways to enhance the caller’s experience, and ringback tones are one way they have accomplished this. Instead of a generic ringing sound, users can choose a melody or tune that plays for the caller while they wait for the call to be answered. This adds a personal touch to the calling experience and makes it more enjoyable for both parties involved.

With the rise in popularity of smartphones such as the iPhone and Android devices, users have a wide range of options when it comes to selecting a ringback tone. They can choose from a variety of genres and artists to find a tune that suits their personality and preferences. Whether it’s a catchy pop song or a soothing instrumental, the ringback tone adds a touch of personality to the caller’s experience.

Ringback tones are often offered as a subscription service by mobile phone providers. Users can pay a monthly fee to access a library of tones and select one to be played for their callers. This adds an element of customization and personalization to the phone service, making it more appealing to customers.

Not only do ringback tones enhance the caller’s experience, but they can also provide a sense of anticipation and excitement. Instead of a plain ringing sound, the caller is greeted with music or a favorite song, creating a more enjoyable and engaging waiting experience. This can help to pass the time and make the call feel more pleasant overall.

In conclusion, ringback tones are a popular feature in the telecom industry that enhance the caller’s experience. By offering a variety of tunes and melodies to choose from, users can customize their phone’s ringtone and make the waiting experience more enjoyable. With the rise of smartphones, the options for ringback tones have expanded, allowing users to find a tune that truly represents their personality and preferences. Whether it’s a catchy pop song or a calming instrumental, ringback tones add a personal touch to the calling experience.

Monetization potential for artists

Ringback tones offer a unique opportunity for artists to monetize their music in the digital age. With the rise of mobile phones and the increasing popularity of personalized ringtones, ringback tones have become a lucrative market for musicians and music labels.

When a phone call is made, the ringback tone is the sound that the caller hears while waiting for the recipient to answer. Instead of the traditional ringing sound, the caller gets to hear a selected tune or melody that reflects the personality or interests of the phone owner. This provides artists with a new platform to showcase their music and reach a wider audience.

Artists can earn revenue from ringback tones through various means. One option is through subscriptions, where users pay a monthly fee to access a collection of ringback tones. Artists receive a portion of this subscription fee based on the usage of their tones. Another option is through individual ringtone purchases, where users can buy specific tones for their phone. These purchases typically involve a one-time payment, with the artist receiving a percentage of the sale.

The ringback tone service is not limited to a specific type of phone, as it is available for both iPhone and Android devices. This allows artists to cater to a wide range of mobile users, maximizing their potential reach and earnings. Additionally, the service is offered by various telecom companies, further increasing the exposure of artists’ music to a larger audience.

The monetization potential for artists through ringback tones goes beyond just the revenue earned from subscriptions and individual purchases. It also opens doors for collaborations and partnerships with mobile service providers. Artists can work with these providers to create exclusive and custom ringback tones for their users, creating a mutually beneficial relationship that generates income and promotes their music.

Promoting new music releases

In the mobile era, cell phones have become an integral part of our lives, and promoting new music releases through these devices has become increasingly popular. One effective way to do this is through ringback tones.

A ringback tone is a service that allows mobile phone users to replace the traditional ringing sound that callers hear when they call their phone with a selected piece of music. It provides a unique and personalized audio experience for both the caller and the receiver.

With the rise of smartphones such as the iPhone and Android devices, ringback tones have evolved to offer a wide range of options. Users can now choose from a vast library of tunes, including the latest music releases, to set as their ringback tone. This not only allows them to express their individuality but also promotes new music releases to their callers.

For music artists and labels, ringback tones offer an innovative way to reach their target audience. By partnering with mobile service providers, they can offer their latest releases as ringback tone options, exposing their music to a wider audience and potentially generating additional revenue.

With the popularity of streaming services, ringback tones have also adapted to offer subscription-based models. Users can now subscribe to a service that provides them with regular updates and access to the latest music releases to set as their ringback tone. This creates a continuous promotional platform for music artists and labels, ensuring that their new releases are heard by mobile phone users on a regular basis.

In conclusion, ringback tones provide a unique and effective way to promote new music releases in the mobile era. With a wide variety of options and subscription-based models, they offer both users and music artists the opportunity to express their individuality and reach a wider audience.

How to get ringback tones

Getting ringback tones for your mobile phone is a simple process. Here are a few different ways you can obtain these customized sound services:

 • Subscribing to a ringback tone service: Many mobile service providers offer ringback tone subscription services. These subscriptions usually involve a monthly fee that allows you to access a wide range of tones. You can choose from various categories such as music, sound effects, or even funny melodies.
 • Purchasing ringback tones for your iPhone or Android: If you have an iPhone or Android phone, you can purchase and download ringback tones directly from the respective app stores. Look for apps that specialize in providing ringback tones, and browse through their extensive collections to find the perfect tone for your incoming calls.
 • Using third-party websites: There are also third-party websites that offer a wide selection of ringback tones. These websites usually allow you to download the tones and transfer them to your phone. Some websites may charge a fee for premium tones, while others offer free options.
 • Creating your own ringback tone: If you want something more personalized, you can create your own ringback tone. This can be done by using audio editing software to trim a song or create a custom melody. Once you have your tone ready, you can transfer it to your mobile phone and set it as your ringback tone.

Regardless of the method you choose, ringback tones are a great way to add a unique touch to your incoming calls. They provide a fun and personalized alternative to the standard ringing sound, allowing your callers to enjoy a customized audio experience while waiting for you to answer the call.

Available options for ringback tones

Ringback tones, also known as caller tunes, are a popular feature offered by telecom companies for mobile phone users. They allow you to replace the traditional “ringing” sound heard by the caller with a music tune or audio melody of your choice. There are several options available for selecting and customizing your ringback tones.

1. Default ringback tone: Most mobile phones come with a default ringback tone set by the telecom company. This is the sound that callers hear when they call your number. It is usually a simple, generic tune that is familiar to most people.

2. Pre-installed ringback tones: Many mobile phones offer a selection of pre-installed ringback tones that you can choose from. These tones are already stored in the phone and can be easily selected and activated. They often include a variety of music genres and popular tunes.

3. Ringback tone subscription service: Some telecom companies offer a subscription service that allows you to access a wide range of ringback tones. These services usually require a monthly or annual fee, and give you access to a library of music and audio options to customize your ringback tones. This is a popular option for those who want a more personalized and unique ringback tone.

4. Custom ringback tones: For those who want to create their own unique ringback tone, some mobile phones allow you to customize the audio file that callers hear. You can choose any song or audio clip from your phone’s library and set it as your ringback tone. This option offers a high level of personalization and allows you to express your individuality.

5. Third-party ringback tone services: In addition to the options provided by your telecom company, there are also third-party services that offer a wide range of ringback tones. These services often have a larger selection of music and audio options to choose from, and may also offer unique features such as celebrity voices or sound effects. They usually require a separate subscription or one-time payment.

Overall, the available options for ringback tones provide flexibility and customization for mobile phone users. Whether you prefer a default tone, a pre-installed tune, a subscription service, a custom audio file, or a third-party offering, there is a ringback tone option that suits your preferences and style.

Purchasing and downloading ringback tones

If you want to personalize the sound that callers hear when they ring your mobile phone, you can purchase and download ringback tones. This feature allows you to choose a specific audio tune or melody that will play instead of the traditional ringing sound when someone calls you.

Ringback tones are available on various platforms, including Android and iOS devices. To access these tones, you can often find them in the settings or customization options of your phone’s telecom service. Some mobile operators may provide a separate app or subscription service specifically for purchasing and managing ringback tones.

When purchasing ringback tones, you can browse through a catalog of available options, which typically include popular music tracks, tones, and melodies. These can range from classical music to the latest hits, allowing you to choose a tone that reflects your personal taste and preferences.

Once you have selected a ringback tone, you can download it to your phone. The tone will then be automatically played for the caller when they dial your number, creating a unique and personalized calling experience. It’s important to note that ringback tones are specific to your phone number, so each caller will hear the tone you have selected.

Some ringback tone services may require a subscription or charge a fee for downloading and using tones. Be sure to check the terms and conditions of the service to understand any costs involved. However, many mobile operators also offer a range of free ringback tones that you can choose from without any additional charges.

Setting up ringback tones on your phone

Setting up ringback tones on your iPhone or Android phone is a simple process that allows you to personalize the sound that callers hear while waiting for you to answer their call. A ringback tone is a form of audio subscription service provided by telecom operators, allowing you to replace the standard ringing sound with a chosen tune or melody.

To set up a ringback tone, you will need to subscribe to a ringback tone service provided by your mobile phone operator. This service may require a monthly or yearly subscription fee, depending on the operator and the available options. Once subscribed, you can choose from a wide range of tones and melodies to set as your ringback tone.

To select a ringback tone, you can go to your phone’s settings and navigate to the “ringtone” or “sound” section. From there, you can browse through the available options and select the desired ringback tone. Some operators may also offer the option to customize your ringback tone by uploading your own audio file.

After you have selected your ringback tone, it will be played to callers while they wait for you to answer the call. This feature not only adds a personal touch to your phone but also adds a unique experience for callers as they listen to your chosen tune or melody instead of the standard ringing sound.

It’s important to note that ringback tones are different from ringtones. While ringtones are the sounds your phone makes when receiving a call, ringback tones are the sounds that callers hear while waiting for you to answer. So, even if you have set a specific ringtone for your phone, your callers will still hear the ringback tone that you have set up.

Overall, setting up ringback tones is a fun and creative way to personalize your mobile phone and enhance the caller’s experience while waiting for you to answer their call. So go ahead and explore the available options to choose the perfect ringback tone that reflects your style and personality.

3. Tap the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner.

4. Tap Set a ringtone .

5. Choose one of the presets or add your own custom ringtone.

How to find and set ringtones through the Zedge app

There are a lot of places to find ringtones, but far and away, the easiest is Zedge. Zedge is a customization app that looks to personalize your phone in a number of ways, most notably with its ringtone and wallpaper galleries.

Zedge even streamlines the process, letting you download and set your ringtone from the same screen! I will admit the ads on Zedge have gotten a bit much over the years, but if you like to change your ringtone every few weeks, you can shell out for the ad-free upgrade.

Browsing the Android app is a simple affair; you can browse by category or search for something specific. Once you find a ringtone in the app you like, here's how to set it:

1. Open the Zedge app on your Android phone. If you don't have it on your phone, install it from the Google Play Store first.

2. Select the Ringtones option from the side menu.

3. Choose a ringtone that you like.

4. Tap the download button on the ringtone's listing.

5. Select SET RINGTONE , SET NOTIFICATION , or SET CONTACT RINGTONE depending on what you want to do.

6. Give Zedge permission to modify system settings.

7. Select your option once more.

You'll see a toast notification at the bottom of the screen telling you the ringtone has been applied. If you wish to set a ringtone to a specific contact, as your notification tone, or even as your alarm ringtone, you can select those options from the same menu.

To confirm that your phone's ringtone has indeed been changed, you can check the Phone ringtone under the Sounds & vibration menu.

Your turn to give your ringer some zing

What awesome custom ringtones are you adding to your Android phone? I'm partial to Disney fireworks music, but Star Wars blaster and lightsaber sounds are pretty fun, too. Once you've customized your phone's sounds, don't stop there. Stay on track and customize your wallpaper and icons as well.

Personalize your device with the help of a great Android launcher . You can choose a theme and match your phone's notification sounds and ringtones to the wallpaper and app icons. There are some really cool icon packs available for Android phones, including one that lets you create custom icons .

ZEDGE Wallpapers & Ringtones

How to Change the Ringtone on Your Android Phone

Your Droid doesn't have to sound like a droid

What To Know

 • Most Phones: Settings > Sound > Phone Ringtone . Choose the tone, and press OK or Save .
 • Samsung: Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone . Choose your ringtone, and press the back arrow .

This article explains how to set your ringtone on a variety of Android phones as well as how to download new ringtones and transfer them to your phone. The instructions below apply no matter who made your Android phone: Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.

How to Set Default Ringtones

Depending on the model of Android phone you have, you can choose from several stock ringtones. Here's how to find and browse through them:

Open your phone's Settings app.

Tap on Sound .

The sound settings contain all sorts of options to adjust the different volume levels and tones on your device. These vary slightly based on your device and the version of Android that it's running, but they should all be fairly similar. Find the Phone Ringtone option and select it.

Depending on which version of Android you're using, the Phone Ringtone option might be under the Advanced section. If so, tap on the down arrow to open it up.

From here, you see a list of ringtones or a list of ringtone categories available on your device. You can tap a ringtone once to hear what it sounds like. When you find one you want to use as your default ringer, tap OK or Save to save the selection.

How to Set Default Ringtones on Samsung Phones

If you own a Samsung device, the process for setting a ringtone is a little different. Here's how to do it:

Launch the Settings app, then tap Sounds and vibration .

Find Ringtone in the list and tap it.

Choose the ringtone you want to set for your phone.

Finally, tap the back arrow at the bottom of your screen to set your new ringtone. You can tap the Home button to dismiss the Settings app.

How to Download New Ringtones From Your Computer

The simplest and least expensive way to get new ringtones is to transfer them over from your computer. Most Android devices can use regular music files as ringtones.

While plenty of devices accept other formats, sticking to MP3 and OGG is generally a good idea.

Connect your Android device to your computer via a USB cable. Usually, you can use the cable that's part of your charger.

On your Android device, swipe down from the top of the screen to see your notifications. You should see a system notification stating that your device is connected via USB for charging. Tap that notification.

A new dialog box opens up and allows you to choose what the USB is used for. Choose File transfer . Your computer might automatically open a window showing the phone's storage. If it does, skip to Step 6.

If your computer doesn't automatically navigate to the phone's storage, open Windows Explorer or whichever file browser is available on your system.

Navigate to where your device is mounted. This is the same location your PC displays connected USB drives. On Windows, it's This PC .

In your Android device's internal storage, find and open the Ringtones folder.

Copy any music files you want to use as ringtones into this folder. When you return to your phone's Sound settings, you should find them listed among the default system ringtones.

Where to Find Ringtones Online

If your phone's default ringtones don't offer the level of customization you want, go to Google Play and do a quick search for ringtones. The search results include many apps—some paid and some free. Here are two free apps worth considering:

ZEDGE Ringtones & Wallpapers

Make your phone a conversation starter with free ringtones when you download the ZEDGE app . It also includes notification sounds, app icons, alarms, and free wallpapers. You can download and use a high-quality ringtone for each member of your family or for each of your friends. Categories include rock, rap, and country, plus classic ringtones and sound effects. Assign the ringtones to individual contacts from within the app.

When you download the RingDroid app , you'll be able to use up to 30 seconds of a song in your media library and create a ringtone from it. It takes a little while to get used to the interface, but once you make a few ringtones, the process is easy and effective.

How to change the ringtone on your Android phone

If you still enjoy playing with ringtones, it’s worth the trouble to choose your own..

A recent discussion among friends wondered if anyone really used ringtones anymore. The idea was that most people (those who still use their phones to hold verbal conversations) either go with whatever ringtone their phone comes with or just use vibrations.

Once upon a time, ringtones were a thing. You could use them for amusement. (My favorite was a bored voice that said, “Ring. Ring. Ring.”) You could use them to know who was calling without having to look at the phone (so you knew when to pick up and when to let it go to voicemail). Now, maybe, not so much.

 • How to change the alert sounds on your iPhone

Still, Google recently added a bunch of new ringtones to its Pixel phones , so presumably, some of us are still playing around with these sounds. In case you count yourself in that group, here’s how to change your ringtone, create your own, and assign a unique ringtone to a contact.

Because the methods for Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixel phones can vary, we’ve included directions for both. If you have a different Android phone, you should be able to use one of these as a guide.

These directions were tested using a Pixel 6 and a Galaxy S23 running Android 14.

Using a Samsung Galaxy

Ringtone page with list of sounds.

Change your ringtone

 • Go to Settings > Sound and vibration > Ringtone .
 • Once you’re in Ringtone , you can choose from a wide variety of sounds. Your current volume and whether you have vibrate activated will be on top, along with Samsung’s brand sounds. If you’ve chosen a different sound, you’ll have to swipe down to find it.

Add a custom ringtone

 • Tap the plus sign in the upper-right corner.
 • You’ll see a list of all your available audio files on the Sound picker page. Select the one you want to use. A toggle above the list lets you play either the entire file or selected highlights.

Add a unique ringtone for a contact

To select a specific ringtone for one of your contacts:

 • Open the Phone app and choose Contacts from the bottom menu.
 • Select the contact you want to choose the ringtone for.
 • From the icons that appear, select the Information icon .
 • Tap the three dots labeled More and select Change ringtone/vibration > Ringtone .
 • You’ll be back on the Ringtones page; select the ringtone you want to assign to that contact.

Using a Google Pixel

Phone ringtone page with colors squares and sound categories.

 • Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone .
 • Alternately, you can press your volume up or volume down key, tap the three dots under the volume indicator, tap the Settings button, and select Phone ringtone .
 • Once you’re in Phone ringtone , you can choose from a wide variety of sounds; your current ringtone will be on top. When you’ve chosen a ringtone, hit Save in the upper-right corner.

List of audio files with a pop-up menu.

There are a number of apps available in the Play Store that will create and install ringtones for you. However, if you have an audio file of your own that you want to use, here’s how to make it available:

 • After creating or downloading the audio file, use Google’s Files app to locate it by going to Browse in the bottom menu, and then choose the Audio category. (If you use a different file app, of course you can use that instead.)
 • Find and tap the audio file.
 • Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right and select Set as ringtone.
 • Open the Phone app and choose Contacts from the bottom menu (or simply go straight to the Contacts app).
 • From the contact page, tap the three dots on the upper right, and select Set ringtone .
 • You’ll be on the Sounds page (which is, in essence, the same as the Phone ringtone page). Select the ringtone you want to assign to that contact.

Ringtones: how to get and use them

Facebook

Ringtones are a fun way to customize your phone and show off your style while getting notified of incoming calls.

Whether it’s a favorite song, a famous movie quote or a sound effect from a childhood video game, you can probably use it as a ringtone. People often use custom ringtones instead of the presets that come with their phones. And there’s a ton of ringtones out there and nearly as many ways to find them. If you are looking for ringtones for Android phones or Apple devices, below are some tips on how to get your own.

Slacker Radio.

Android™ users can easily make a favorite song their ringtone or ringback tone for incoming callers with the Slacker Radio app . You can change it up whenever you want, as often as you want.

To get the ringtones and ringbacks, sign in to your Verizon account from your device, and add the Tones feature to your account for an additional $2 a month. Open the Slacker Radio app on your smartphone, and boom—you’ve got access to some rocking ringtones.

Verizon ringtones.

One of the easiest ways to get ringtones on an Android phone is to download the Verizon Tones app from the Google Play™ store. From the app, you can purchase and download from a broad selection of great ringtones. You’ll also be able to set specific ringtones for certain contacts and set up a ringback tone that plays for people who call your phone.

Customized ringtones for Android and iPhone.

Zedge ringtones and more.

Websites like Zedge and ToneTweet give you access to free ringtones for download. For some, you’ll need to download the tone to your computer and then connect your device for transfer. Others let you enter your cellular number to get a direct download link right on your smartphone. Zedge also offers its service via an app, so you can find ringtones right from your smartphone.

Mobile9 is a site that provides ringtones as well as themes, apps, stickers and wallpapers for iPhone and Android devices. And, you’ll only get results that will work with your specific smartphone, making your search even easier.

Audiko is another popular website that allows you to download ringtones for iPhones. It also lets you create your own ringtones by uploading your favorite songs. Audiko is known for having a huge database of free ringtones for iPhone devices. Ringtones are divided into 5 categories, including favorite ringtones, SMS ringtones, United States top artists, featured artists and popular genres.

Use an MP3 converter.

Another method for finding ringtones is to use a website that will convert your chosen sound into an MP3. Online-convert.com lets you enter links to the audio you want to use or upload files from your computer for conversion. Then, the MP3 can be used as a ringtone.

Personalize your phone.

Personalizing your ringtone is simpler than you think. Many sites and apps offer customizable ringtones for Android and iPhone. When you’re waiting for a call, the sound that others hear while they’re waiting can be just as important as the tone that plays when you pick up. Setting the ringback tone on your Verizon phone is a great way to personalize your phone and give your callers something to enjoy while they wait for you to pick up. Here are some simple steps you can take to set your ringback tone on Verizon:

Step 1: Open the Verizon Tones app

If you don’t already have the Verizon Tones app on your phone, you’ll need to download it from the app store. Once it’s installed, open the app and navigate to the “Ringback tones” section.

Step 2: Browse ringback tones

Now that you’re in the ringback tones section of the app, you can browse the available tones. You can use the search function to find tones by name or artist, or you can browse by genre, popularity, and more.

Step 3: Select a tone

When you find a ringback tone that you like, select it to play a preview. If you’re happy with the tone, you can purchase it and set it as your default ringback tone.

Step 4: Set the tone as your default

Once you’ve purchased a ringback tone, you’ll need to set it as your default tone. To do this, simply navigate to the “Settings” section of the Verizon Tones app and scroll down to “Ringback tone.” You’ll see your new tone displayed there, and you can select it to set it as your default.

Step 5: Check your ringback tone Now that you’ve set your new ringback tone, it’s a good idea to make a test call to your own phone to make sure everything is working properly. If you hear the tone you selected while waiting for your call to connect, you’re all set!

How to set custom ringtones for specific contacts in android.

Everyone likes to know who's calling before they actually pick up the phone, and the easiest way to achieve that is with custom ringtones for specific callers.

Quick Links

How to set contact ringtones on stock (or near-stock) android, how to set contact ringtones on samsung galaxy devices, how to set contact ringtones on lg devices.

Everyone likes to know who's calling before they actually pick up the phone, and the easiest way to achieve that is with custom ringtones for specific callers. That way, when your phone starts blasting "Cherry Pie," you know it's your wife. Or when it's "Roll Out (My Business)," you know it's your boss. Fortunately, this is a simple process in Android. Here’s how to do it.

Before we get started, you should be aware that the process may vary slightly between manufacturers and their respective custom skins. There’s no possible way we can show how to do it on every phone out there, but I’ll show how to do it on stock Android, Samsung, and LG devices—you should be able to at least get the idea from there.

So, let’s get started.

You can do this from either the Phone or Contacts apps—since Contacts is essentially an extension of the dialer, they both ultimately end up in the same place anyway.

The first thing you’ll want to do is open either of the above-mentioned apps and find the contact you’d like to set a custom ringtone for. In this case, I’ll be setting a tone for my good friend Barack Obama. We go way back.

Just tap the little pencil icon to open the “Edit contact” menu. From there, tap on the three-dot overflow menu in the top right corner.

You see the option that reads “Set ringtone”? Yeah, that’s the one we’re looking for. Give it a tap.

This will open the Ringtones menu, where you can choose whichever tone you’d like for that contact. I happen to know for a fact that Barack is a huge metalhead, so I’m going to use In Flames’ “Through Oblivion” for his tone. He’ll love that.

After that, just hit the check mark next to the overflow menu.

And we're done. Can’t wait for the next call I get from good ol’ B-rock.

On Samsung phones, you can use either the Phone or Contacts app to get the job done. Open the one of your choosing (I’m using Phone because that just makes sense) and navigate to your contact. I’ve been meaning to set a custom tone for my girl Katy Perry for a while now, so I might as well do it now. She blows my phone up like you wouldn’t believe.

Once you’ve opened the Phone (or Contacts) app, navigate to your contact, tap the “Edit” button in the top right.

From there, hit the “More” button, then scroll all the way to the bottom.

Tap the “Ringtone” option. I think I’ll assign Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” to Katy, because that just seems like the right thing to do here.

Once you’ve selected your ringtone, tap the “Save” option at the top.

And that’s that. Too bad Katy will never hear her ringtone when she calls me.

I’m using an LG V10 here, but it should be pretty much the same process (if not identical) on all other modern LG devices, too. And guess what? You can do this from the Phone or Contacts app on LG phones, just like all the others. Seeing a pattern here?

This time, I’ll be hooking my buddy Michael Jordan up with a custom ringtone. I’m a pretty busy guy, so I want to know when it’s MJ giving me a ring.

Once you’ve opened the Phone or Contacts app and navigated to the contact you want to edit, hit the little pencil icon in the top right to open up the “Edit contact” menu.

Screenshot_2016-04-28-10-43-47

Scroll all the way down. At the bottom of this page, there are two options: Ringtone and Notification sound. You can all sorts of custom action here.

My boy MJ rocked the 23 on his chest for many years, so it’s only fair to set his ringtone accordingly— 23 from Mike Will Made-It seems to fit the bill perfectly.

When you’re finished, hit “OK.” Then hit “Save.”

That’s it. Done and done.

Setting custom ringtones in Android is a pretty straightforward and simple process. And once you’ve mastered the art of creating ringtones from your favorite songs, the possibilities are endless. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to create a few more contacts for people I pretend to know.
