3rd grade teaching tips

One of the primary goals for third-grade readers is to learn common Latin suffixes, which helps them decode words, thus improving reading comprehension. At this age, readers should also be able to understand the main idea of an informational text, retell key details, and explain the interrelationship between the two. Use the tips outlined below to facilitate the acquisition of these skills.

Encourage the Practice of Re-Reading

Not only does re-reading a passage enable third graders to read with improved fluency, but it also encourages improved comprehension of the text. At this age, readers should be able to read approximately 90 words per minute, and using re-reading exercises will encourage the development of that level of reading fluency. Have readers reread short bursts (i.e., a sentence or paragraph) to practice these skills.

Teach Them How to Use a Dictionary

Whether a student uses a hard copy or references an online dictionary, looking up unfamiliar words helps improve reading comprehension very rapidly. Adding unfamiliar words to their lexicon – and learning how to spell those words – will also improve their understanding of the main idea and key details of a text. It’s a great way to become familiar with the meaning of Latin suffixes, too.

Ask Them to Make Predictions

A fun way to engage children in reading is to ask them to make predictions about what might happen next in a passage. Making these kinds of inferences improves their comprehension of the material, enables them to remember what they’ve read, and also challenges them to think creatively about the text.

The school system seems to be demanding more and more of 3rd grade students. I guess we have to give them what they want. This page has some reading worksheets and activites to help prepare your 3rd graders. The worksheets on this page are written at the 3rd grade reading level. Lydia boutwell.

I love the ereading activities, since my school is virtually, and I would love to see more for 3rd grade. The only problem I have is when one is labeled grades 2-5 for example, then the reading is to difficult for a 2nd grader. I just wished it would be broken down more. Otherwise, what you are doing is great and I appreciate all the work people are doing.

A big thank you to everyone makes this website possible.

This is a fantastic platform to have for guiding students in grades 3-6 through specific skills. For the students the lessons are interesting, often captivating, and inspiring for those students who experience difficulties taking tests. Thank you! I appreciate your work. Be well.

I love this Site it always me and my kids to work one on one and it is very fast loading also

Thank you so much for this brilliant website!

Eric Harrison

I feel you are in need of more 3rd grade material.

I agree with you.

Thank you so much for your hard work. I really appreciate what you do for us teachers with this site. I have been a 3rd grade teacher for more than 10 years and its not like it use to be, there is a great demand for rigor in 3rd grade. I have used your work when I have had gifted classes and the students loved the texts. Your work helps me challenge my 3rd graders and prepare them for 4th & 5th. Thank you!

That’s awesome.

Be on the look out for a bunch of new content for grades 3-6. I’m currently developing these activities…

Thanks for visiting and taking the time to comment!
