The Mean Squinty Eye Works

  • Sep 19, 2021

Can someone tell me what they mean? Are they for social distance? The 4 of us traveling have 3 different reservations. We all had seats next to each other way in the back of the plane. My sister moved her husband and herself up 14 rows on the airplane, as that row showed empty. Once she did that, the seats around her went to X. So the remaining 2 of us can't shift to be next to them. It is not that big of a deal, but I'm just wondering if someone can explain. If when we start our trip those seats still show as X should we ask at the gate if we can move to them?

Delta is not blocking seats for social distancing any more.

PHM - Feb 2022! First runDisney!

I wondered the same thing. It’s weird. I have 4 flights booked in the next few months and there are Xs all over the place. It’s not social distancing. I’d say call to ask and they should be able to move you together again. But that requires 2 hours on hold. Not cool.

  • Sep 20, 2021

I’ve been wondering about those X’s too. When I booked my flight (main cabin), I couldn’t even select a seat…yet 1/3 of the seating map is X’s. Calling now. “Current hold time- less than 2 hours”, they said. Let’s see how long this takes.

EACarlson

Delta is blocking a lot of seats for multiple reasons. I have a flight where DL blocked all of Comfort +, changing my flight to a later one that had C+, now three weeks later they've re-opened half of C+. All of this with only 25 seats assigned on the airline. Usually the seats in the back of the plane are blocked off to be assigned at the gate to Basic Economy passengers.

Just got off the phone. Agent knew nothing about these blocked seats. She was able to put me in a seat, albeit 5 rows from the back of the plane. I understand delta may need to block seats for something, but if they’re going to sell me a main cabin seat, and I’m paying for the ability to select my seat, they should provide that to me.

kristenrice

Not just an ambulance driver.

Could they possibly be blocking them because they may be anticipating a change in aircraft that won’t have the same number of seats in that row?? That way, they won’t have 5 people booked in a row that will only accommodate 4. I’m only speculating….

In addition to gate flexibility, some seats are blocked because they’re close to the lavs or have another negative attribute like limited recline.

js

Been around since before the disboards 90s crash

I thought those are the seats that they use when people don't purchase their exact seat ahead of time but that is just a guess from me.

I have been wondering the same thing. My flight on Friday has a lot of various spots X-ed out (3 in first class, 5 in Comfort, and 37 in Main cabin (including almost all of the 4-5 rows (4 on one side and 5 rows on the other, with a couple aisle seats booked in those rows only). My Mom and I are in row 14 (aisle/window with a stranger between us despite a lot of other open seats (including window or aisle seats) all over the plane) and the aisle/middle seat across from us is X-ed out and window shows a passenger in it.

Donna M

I noticed that too and thought it was odd. I was just checking to see if the seat next to us was taken yet when it showed all the x's so I change to a different class and the x's went away, weird. I'm going to go and check again. Just checked, the seat next to us has an x, but most seats are now full and last week most seats were empty. The return flight has more x's, but not too many.

dreamit

I fly Delta quite a bit, and I’ve never experienced this until now. My daughter and I don’t have seats for our trip next week. I’m just leaving it to change, hoping we get seated together. I don’t feel like dealing with a long hold-time.

Delta now has 'dynamic' seat maps that automatically block rows for families

Zach Griff

Throughout the pandemic, Delta was one of the major U.S. carriers to guarantee flyers extra space by blocking the middle seat for additional social distancing and passenger comfort .

While that policy is now history, the Atlanta-based carrier has implemented a new type of seat blocking. This one, however, is designed to make it easier for groups of travelers to sit together.

Want more airline-specific news? Sign up for TPG's free new biweekly Aviation newsletter .

Specifically, the carrier is blocking a handful of rows in the main economy cabin for those traveling as part of a group. These seats are not assignable to solo travelers, nor to those traveling with just one additional person on the reservation.

They'll instead be available for selection by those who have reservations with three or more travelers on a single reservation. (They'll also be available to Medallion elite members traveling with one or two passengers.)

Delta's "dynamic seat-map algorithm," as the airline calls it, first started rolling out quietly in 2019 and now uses historical booking and seat assignment data to determine how many rows to hold back on a given flight. For instance, a search for flights between New York and Fort Lauderdale — a leisure-heavy route — shows that the airline is holding back five rows.

delta seat map what does x mean

Meanwhile, on a more typical business route frequented by solo travelers, say from Chicago to Boston, the airline is holding back just two rows.

In the most extreme example of seat-blocking that I could find, Delta is holding back a whopping eight rows, or 48 seats, on a Christmas Eve flight from New York-JFK to Cancun.

The seat-blocking varies by aircraft, route and other factors, a spokesperson confirmed to TPG. The logic incorporates many factors, and there's no definitive "rule" as to how many seats will be held back on a given flight. For now, Delta is only blocking the last few rows on any given plane, though that logic could theoretically change over time.

Related: How to make sure your family can sit together on a plane

In fact, the airline will update the algorithm in real-time, and it'll release seats if it determines that there are more solo travelers than groups or families on a given flight compared to the algorithm's original prediction.

In confirming the move to TPG, Delta said that "being a customer-centric brand means we're constantly working to offer optimal experiences across travel. Taking a dynamic approach with our seat map displays is one way of doing that by providing preferred seating choices in all cabins – at the time of booking or at the gate when working with an agent – for customers traveling alone or with a group."

How to find Delta's blocked seats

To determine if Delta is blocking seats on your flight, you can perform two searches during the booking process — one with just a single passenger in the reservation, followed by a second search for the same flight with three or more passengers.

If you take a look at the seat map in both cases, you should be able to identify which seats Delta is blocking for groups. For example, in the screenshot below, you can see that Delta is holding back rows 29 through 31 for bookings of three or more passengers. (Rows 32 and 33 remain blocked for all passengers, and they're only available for assignment at the airport.)

delta seat map what does x mean

Bottom line

Delta's move is interesting as it's one of the first attempts we've seen from a major network carrier to provide dedicated seating areas for groups.

Of course, if seats closer to the front of the plane are available, you don't necessarily "need" to select a row in the back. This initiative just provides another option should adjacent seats closer to the front of the plane be unavailable.

In the end, this should also help minimize the number of times a family needs to scramble at the gate (or onboard) to find passengers willing to play musical chairs to accommodate them sitting together. The move will likely be applauded by families, especially those traveling with young children.

In fact, the dynamic seat blocking might lead to a faster boarding process , especially on flights with lots of families and groups traveling together. One big downside is that solo flyers booking at the last minute could end up being stuck in a middle towards the front, as opposed to a window or aisle in the back.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see how Delta's seat-blocking algorithm evolves over time — and whether any of its competitors implement something similar.

Booking a Delta Air Lines flight and wondering about Delta’s seat selection? It’s no wonder — with differing benefits for elite members and strict restrictions on basic economy tickets, figuring out how and when to choose your Delta seat can quickly become overwhelming.

Here's a look at Delta seat assignments, how Delta Air Lines’ seating system works and the costs of choosing a seat.

Delta operates a variety of cabin classes on its aircraft, including economy, Premium Select, first class and Delta One seats.

Like most airlines, Delta will allow you to select your seat when booking, though the cost to do so and any upcharges will vary depending on the flight you’re taking. Those flying with families and wondering “does Delta seat families together?” are in luck. Delta does its best to seat families together, even after check-in.

According to an analysis of airline fees by NerdWallet, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines charge the least for seat selection, while budget airlines Frontier and Spirit charge the most.

Delta sits in the middle, charging an average of $15-plus for each flight that you'd like to select a seat for. The cost will vary depending on the type of ticket you book with the airline — which we'll discuss next.

How much is seat selection on Delta Air Lines? That will depend on the ticket type you’re purchasing, be it basic economy, main cabin, Premium Select (premium economy), first class or Delta One.

Basic economy

Basic economy tickets have the most restrictions of any Delta ticket, and this extends to seat selection. Those who book basic economy tickets won't be able to select seats; instead, a seat will be randomly assigned to each passenger after check-in. This includes families and groups who are traveling together — expect to be split up when booking a basic economy ticket.

If you reserve a basic economy ticket, it’s possible to purchase a specific seat starting seven days before departure. Pricing for this varies by trip and is priced by segment.

Main cabin seating, also known as regular economy, includes complimentary seat selection. As a main cabin customer, you also have the option to purchase an upgrade to preferred or Delta Comfort Plus seats while remaining an economy class passenger.

You can also book upgraded economy tickets with additional seat selection perks:

Main Cabin Preferred: Main Cabin Preferred seats are functionally the same as regular main cabin seats. The difference lies in the seat location; Main Cabin Preferred seats are typically window and aisle seats nearer to the front of the plane, plus exit rows. These are the least expensive upgrades from standard economy seating.

Comfort Plus: When available, a Delta Comfort Plus ticket can be purchased directly while booking and the price will include seat selection. The cost to upgrade is higher than for a preferred seat in main cabin. Comfort Plus features more legroom than main cabin and offers passengers dedicated overhead bins. In addition, Comfort Plus guests will receive complimentary beer and wine on all domestic and short-haul international flights.

Main cabin passengers can also choose to upgrade to a Comfort Plus seat either before or after purchasing their ticket.

Premium Select

Premium Select is Delta’s version of premium economy, with larger seats and better recline, two free checked bags, earlier boarding and premium extras. Those who book Premium Select can choose any seat within the cabin for no additional fee.

Delta One and first class

Both first class and Delta One ticket holders can choose any seat within their cabin for free. These spacious seats come with two free checked bags, premium snacks and meals, priority boarding, and a dedicated flight attendant.

You can find Delta Air Lines seating without needing to book a flight. To do so, you’ll want to first search for your preferred route on Delta’s website. On the search results page, you’ll find a variety of flights from which to choose.

Each flight presents a seat map, which you can preview by selecting "Seats."

How do I choose my seat on Delta?

During booking

The process for reserving a Delta seat is fairly simple. As we mentioned above, you’ll be able to pick seats when booking your flights on the website; Delta will automatically prompt you to do so before checkout.

You may not be able to select seats on codeshare flights, which are operated by Delta’s partners . In this case, you’ll want to go directly to the other airlines’ webpage to manage your seat selection.

After booking

If you need to choose or alter your seat after you’ve booked your flight, go to "My Trips" on the Delta homepage.

Delta has a variety of ticketing options available for every type of passenger. This includes the highly restrictive basic economy class ticket as well as main cabin tickets for those who prefer certainty with their seats.

Upgrading to Main Cabin Preferred and Comfort Plus seats offers better benefits for those in economy. Loyal members of Delta’s SkyMiles program can also expect to receive complimentary access to these seats and upgrades to higher classes depending on their level of status.

Simple Flying

Delta air lines uses dynamic seat plans: what that means for you.

Let’s take a look at Delta’s seat plan algorithm.

Delta Air Lines has been using an advanced seat mapping algorithm since 2019 to maximize efficiency in flight bookings. Airlines use complex algorithms and artificial intelligence for a wide range of applications, from deciding ticket prices to flight planning . However, it is unusual for carriers to use it (or admit to using it) to pre-plan seating arrangements on individual flights. Let’s take a closer look at how Delta has been using algorithms to do just that.

What are Dynamic Seat Maps?

Delta’s ‘Dynamic Seat Maps’ system is essentially a computer algorithm that keeps a few rows on the aircraft blocked for certain types of bookings. The number of rows blocked is decided by the algorithm using complicated computer witchcraft after taking into account historical booking trends and seat assignment data.

One of the most prominent examples of Delta’s algorithm in action can be found while navigating the carrier’s ‘seat selection’ section when booking any flight. The system blocks a few rows, mostly at the aircraft’s aft cabin, for passengers traveling in groups of three or more. These seats are not available for bookings of one or two passengers, unless they are made by the airline’s elite status members.

Screenshot 2022-04-08 012706

Admittedly, Delta Air Lines hasn’t been entirely forthcoming when it comes to its ‘Dynamic Seat Maps’ program. There is little verified information available in the public domain, so we reached out to the US carrier for a comment. Delta Air Lines told Simple Flying:

“Being a customer-centric brand means we’re constantly working to offer optimal experiences across travel. Taking a dynamic approach with our seat map displays is one way of doing that by providing preferred seating choices in all cabins – at the time of booking or at the gate when working with an agent – for customers traveling alone or with a group.”

How can you take advantage of this algorithm?

Delta claims the algorithm is designed to help customers get the best seats for their flights, and we are inclined to agree. Let’s continue with the example of blocking out entire rows for passengers traveling in groups of three or more. Here, the keyword is ‘dynamic,’ which essentially means the algorithm will treat each flight or route differently.

In other words, routes that see significant tourist demand will have more rows blocked out, taking into consideration the fact that people mostly holiday in groups. On the other hand, routes will high business travel are likely to have fewer blocked rows. Similarly, flights during popular holiday seasons can be expected to feature more restricted rows.

Delta Air Lines Airbus A220-100 N102DU

Of course, even the most advanced computer algorithms aren’t entirely bulletproof, and slight anomalies are bound to happen from time to time, especially since Delta uses historical booking data as a reference point.

What do you make of Delta Air Lines’ unique approach to seat maps? Do you think the airline is right in blocking out certain rows so families can sit together on flights? Please, let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Delta Fare Classes & Codes (A – Z) – What They Mean [2024]

' src=

Delta fare classes, also known as booking codes or fare buckets, are an essential part of Delta’s pricing strategy. They are alphanumeric codes that airlines assign to specific ticket prices, each representing a different level of service, flexibility, and price. These codes help differentiate among various categories of tickets, such as Delta One, First Class, Premium Select, and Economy.

Each fare class has its own set of rules and restrictions. For example, some might allow ticket changes or cancellations without a fee, while others might offer extra frequent flyer miles. Moreover, fare classes are closely associated with inventory management; Delta adjusts the number of seats available in each fare class based on demand prediction algorithms, allowing them to maximize their revenue.

Why should you care about this? Well, if you’re looking for your chances of an upgrade on Delta or hoping to earn extra MQMs, you may want to consider your fare class.

The Different Delta Fare Classes

Delta has over 20 different fare classes which belong to various cabins and boarding zones with varying restrictions. While fare class J is typically referred to as Delta One and fare class Y is typically referred to as economy (these are full fare tickets), there are many other fare classes. The higher your fare class, the more likely you’ll receive a complimentary upgrade within your Medallion upgrade window (on domestic flights).

* your boarding zone may be different if you have Medallion status with Delta (or status through one of their SkyTeam partners). For example, Gold Medallions receive SkyPriority benefits, which include a dedicated boarding zone (which is after Comfort+ and before Main Cabin 1). ** Comfort+ has an underlying economy fare basis code, which is determined for your domestic First Class upgrade priority.

Delta Upgrade Order

Delta’s upgrade order changed on January 1st, 2024 , and the airline now processes them in this order:

  • Medallion Status
  • Cabin Purchased (Original + Paid Upgrades)
  • Million Miler Status
  • Delta SkyMiles Reserve Amex Cardholders
  • Delta Corporate Travelers
  • Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) earned in the current calendar year
  • Date and time of upgrade request

Delta Fare Class FAQs

You will have better chances at a complimentary upgrade by booking a more premium ticket, like Comfort+. Keep in mind, Medallion status is the most important factor so, in most cases, you shouldn’t put too much weight into this if you’re not Diamond or Platinum.

The easiest way is to view the Fare Rule summary when booking your ticket. The third letter of the Fare Code code is the underlying economy class code. You can also call Delta and ask an agent for this information.

It depends on your American Express card. The Delta Platinum requires booking class L, U, T, X, or V (Main Cabin), and the Delta Reserve includes the same classes along with I, Z, and W (Discounted First or Comfort+).

So if you purchase a C+ fare and its underlying fare class is V but is 3x as much fare cost than the current H or K class published for main, you would still rank lower when it comes to the fare comparison for UG priority since underlying code is V and is the bottom?

Hey Scott, that is correct. C+ by itself doesn’t really impact how FC upgrades are processed. I don’t recommend paying 3x the fare solely in hopes of an upgrade.

Any idea how to search for flights of a specific fare basis. I want to use a companion certificate and I understand these can be used on booking class L, U, T, X, and V. When I find Main Cabin fares the details say they are something else, like K.

I want to search for flights based on Fare Basis criteria.

Hey Jim, thanks for the comment. Companion certificates are tricky to use. Like you said, they require an L, U, T, X, or V fare. Try different dates if you’re not seeing compatible options. Delta’s site returns the cheapest available fare so it is likely not a case of hidden inventory or something like that. I usually have luck finding flights that work by flying on the weekend and not during a holiday.

What Does Unavailable Seat Mean on Delta: A Quick Explanation

Table of Contents

Understanding Delta’s Seat Availability

What does unavailable seat mean on delta?

“Unavailable seat” on Delta means to a seat on a Delta flight that is not able to be selected or booked by customers. Some common reasons a Delta seat may show as unavailable include:

  • The seat is already occupied by another passenger. Once booked, a seat will show as unavailable to other customers.
  • The seat is blocked for airline use. Delta may block certain seats for crew rest purposes, for passengers with disabilities, or to spread passengers out for weight and balance.
  • The seat is broken or unusable. If a seat is broken or has some other mechanical issue, Delta will block it from being booked.
  • The seat is held for elite/full-fare passengers. Delta reserves some seats for elite-status passengers and those booking more expensive ticket classes that allow seat selection.
  • The seat map hasn’t been fully loaded yet. Sometimes on the website or app, it takes a minute for the full updated seat map to load. A seat may appear unavailable until the map refreshes.

So you know, it’s a normal part of the booking process, not an error. Checking back often or selecting another flight can sometimes resolve unavailable seats.

Remember that while you might not always be able to secure your preferred seat immediately, keeping an eye on your booking in My Trips will allow you to check for any updates to seat availability and make changes as needed. This way, you can have a comfortable and enjoyable flight experience with Delta.

Seat Map and Aircraft Details

Interpreting delta’s seat map.

When booking a flight with Delta, you will come across their interactive seat map. This handy tool allows you to view, select, or change your seat assignment in a user-friendly manner. The seat map displays the aircraft’s layout and provides details on seat availability. It is important to understand the various designations shown on the map.

An “occupied” seat label means someone has already selected that seat. On the other hand, an “unavailable” label might indicate the seat is blocked for various reasons, like a schedule change or aircraft substitution. In some cases, unavailable seats may later open up and become available for selection before the departure date.

Don’t be alarmed if you see some seats marked as unavailable, particularly middle seats. Delta has a policy of blocking select middle seats as a safety measure amid the ongoing pandemic. This ensures a certain level of social distance between passengers.

Types of Seats on Delta’s Aircrafts

Delta offers various seat options on their flights to suit your preferences and budget. Here is a quick overview of the types of seats available:

  • Basic Economy : These are the most affordable seats, but with limited perks. Seat selection is typically not available until check-in, which may result in limited choices.
  • Main Cabin : More comfortable than Basic Economy, Main Cabin seats offer complimentary snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, and in-flight entertainment. Delta lets you select your seat at the time of booking or later.
  • Delta Comfort+ : Offering more legroom and some additional perks, Delta Comfort+ seats provide a more enjoyable experience. Expect priority boarding and dedicated overhead bin space with this upgraded choice.
  • First Class : For an elevated travel experience, First Class comes with premium seats, personalized service, and exclusive amenities. Expect wider seats, more legroom, and a premium dining experience.
  • Delta One : As the ultimate in luxury, Delta One is available on select long-haul international flights and cross-country routes. It offers lie-flat seats, premium dining, and exclusive in-flight amenities.

When selecting a seat on Delta’s aircraft, it’s essential to consider the various options available and your personal preferences. Remember that the seat map is your key to understanding the aircraft’s layout and ensuring a comfortable flight.

Unavailable Seat Reasons

Delta Air Lines may label some seats as “unavailable” for various reasons. Understanding these reasons can help you better plan your trip and be aware of potential changes to your seating arrangement. In this section, we will discuss the most common reasons for unavailable seats on Delta flights, including seat blocks, seat upgrade options, and high demand routes.

Seat Blocks

Sometimes, Delta may block certain seats from being selected by passengers. These seat blocks could be reserved for passengers with basic economy fares, allowing the airline to seat families together or accommodate passengers who need to change their seats due to flight changes or other issues. This is one reason you might see an unavailable seat next to you when booking or managing your seat selection.

Seat Upgrade Options

Another reason for unavailable seats could be related to seat upgrade options. Delta offers passengers the opportunity to upgrade their seats for more comfort, extra legroom, or more advanced features. If a seat is marked “unavailable,” it may be reserved for passengers who choose to upgrade their ticket class or seating. This allows the airline to provide better seating options for their more premium or loyal customers.

High Demand Routes

Lastly, high demand routes might also influence the availability of seats on Delta flights. On popular routes, there may be a higher demand for specific seating, which can result in seats being marked as unavailable. The more passengers there are on a route, the more likely it is that you will see unavailable seats on the seat map. This is the airline’s way of managing high demand and ensuring that they maximize their revenue potential.

In summary, unavailable seats on Delta can come from a variety of reasons, including seat blocks, upgrade options, and high demand routes. By being aware of these factors, you can better understand why certain seats are not available and potentially make adjustments to your seating preferences accordingly.

Ticket Types and Seat Availability

Basic economy tickets.

When you book a Basic Economy ticket with Delta, it’s important to know that seat selection is subject to a few more restrictions. As a result, you might come across some seats marked as “unavailable” on the booking platform. These are typically reserved for passengers who don’t have advance seat assignments, such as those on Basic Economy fares. This reservation ensures that families and other groups can be seated together prior to departure.

In addition, Delta might block certain seats for contingencies, like the last few rows of the plane or the first row of Comfort+ seats. These unavailable seats might show up as “occupied” or “blocked,” giving you an indication of how full the flight might be. It’s worth keeping this in mind when you’re selecting seats, as it can impact the overall flight experience.

First Class Tickets

When booking a First Class ticket with Delta, you’ll enjoy a more seamless seat selection process and increased availability. With First Class, seat assignment is usually confirmed at the time of ticket purchase, and you’ll have access to preferred seats. However, there can still be occasions when certain seats are marked as “unavailable.”

This can happen if the seats are being held for other passengers with priority access or in case of operational reasons, like accommodating passengers with special needs. In these situations, you might find that some First Class seats are temporarily marked as “unavailable” and might open up closer to the departure date.

Remember, seat availability varies based on the ticket type and the specific flight. Factors like operational requirements and passenger needs can impact seat selection for both Basic Economy and First Class travelers on Delta. So, as you plan your trip, it’s helpful to be aware of these differences and how they might affect your booking experience.

Passenger Groups and Seat Availability

Traveling with families or groups can make seat selection on Delta flights a bit more challenging, but don’t worry, there are ways to ensure you sit together. First and foremost, it’s important to understand what “unavailable” means when viewing the Delta seat map. An “unavailable” seat is usually marked with an “X” and could be temporarily unavailable for a variety of reasons, including reserving some middle seats to maintain social distancing, seat assignments for elite status members or disabled passengers, or because a schedule or aircraft change has occurred.

If you’re traveling with family or friends and want to secure seats next to each other, be proactive in choosing your seats as early as possible. Delta may block some middle seats for certain situations, but that doesn’t necessarily mean these seats won’t become available later on. If you booked your tickets separately, try adjusting your seat selection closer to the departure date as some seats might become available.

If you’re flying in Basic Economy class, you likely won’t have the option to select your seats together, as seat assignments are given when you check-in. However, you can always kindly ask the gate agent to help accommodate your group if possible, but be prepared for the possibility that you may not be able to sit together.

Sometimes, a fellow passenger might be open to switching seats with you, which can create an opportunity to sit with your family or group members. Don’t be afraid to politely inquire if another traveler would be willing to help you out, so you and your loved ones can enjoy the journey together. Just remember to maintain a friendly and understanding tone while making such requests.

In summary, be proactive in selecting your seats early by keeping an eye on seat availability via the Delta seat map and adjust your bookings as needed. Secondly, utilize the support of gate agents and fellow passengers to improve your chances of sitting with your family or group members during your Delta flight.

Public Feedback on Delta’s Seat Availability

It seems that many people have been wondering about Delta’s seat availability, specifically seats marked as “unavailable.” This post on Reddit is a good example of public feedback discussing this topic.

One user explains that some seats, typically at the back of the plane or in an exit row, are held for gate control. These seats might be reserved for passengers with basic economy fares or those with disabilities. This could be a reason why you see many seats marked as “unavailable.”

Another Reddit discussion raises the same question – why are so many seats marked as unavailable? Users mentioned that they knew some seats were occupied because they had relatives on a flight. It appears that Delta might block seats in advance for various reasons, not just because they are already occupied.

In some cases, seats might be marked as unavailable to keep them free for families traveling together, or passengers who need special assistance. Delta may want to ensure there’s flexibility to reassign seats if necessary for operational reasons or customer satisfaction.

So, now that you have an idea of what the public has to say about Delta’s seat availability, remember to keep an open mind and not assume that an “unavailable” seat is necessarily occupied. There could be multiple reasons for that designation, making it a flexible and dynamic seating arrangement.

If you’ve ever wanted to experience a total solar eclipse from the sky, Delta has you covered this April.

The airline is offering a special flight from Austin to Detroit on April 8, 2024, specifically for umbraphiles to be able to spend as much time as possible directly within the path of totality.

Delta flight 1218 will be specifically operated on an A220-300, which will offer especially premium viewing due to the aircraft’s extra-large windows. The flight will depart from Austin at 12:15 p.m. CT and land in Detroit at 4:20 p.m. ET — timed to give those on board the best chance of safely viewing the solar eclipse at its peak.*

“This flight is the result of significant collaboration and exemplifies the close teamwork Delta is known for — from selecting an aircraft with larger windows to determining the exact departure time from Austin and the experiences at the gate and in the air,” said Eric Beck, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning. “Thanks to teams across the company, the idea of viewing a total eclipse from the air will become a reality for our customers.”

delta seat map what does x mean

Even if you aren’t on this special flight, Delta travelers will also have prime eclipse-viewing opportunities on five additional routes on April 8, so don’t forget your protective viewing glasses if you’re on these flights:

  • DL 5699, DTW-HPN, 2:59 pm EST departure, ERJ-175
  • DL 924, LAX-DFW, 8:40 am PST departure, A320
  • DL 2869, LAX-SAT, 9:00 am PST departure, A319
  • DL 1001, SLC-SAT, 10:08 am MST departure, A220-300
  • DL 1683, SLC-AUS, 9:55 am MST departure, A320

And for those who would rather catch the solar event from the ground, Delta flies to many destinations that are within the path of totality, including AUS, San Antonio (SAT), and Little Rock, Ark. (LIT).

“The April 8 eclipse is the last total eclipse we’ll see over North America until 2044,” said Warren Weston, Delta Air Lines Lead Meteorologist. “This eclipse will last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide.”

For booking information, visit delta.com .

*While Delta flight plans have been designed to maximize time within the path of totality, this is subject to change due to factors outside of Delta’s control such as weather and air traffic control that could impact timing and aircraft.

  3. Delta seat map X

Sep 19, 2021 #1 Can someone tell me what they mean? Are they for social distance? The 4 of us traveling have 3 different reservations. We all had seats next to each other way in the back of the plane. My sister moved her husband and herself up 14 rows on the airplane, as that row showed empty. Once she did that, the seats around her went to X.

  4. How to Read an Aircraft Seat Map

If there is an X on the seat you want to select, this may mean it cannot be reserved in advance and if there is a $ sign on the seat, it means you will need to pay extra to select this seat. Premium Cabins Different economy and premium economy seats within the same cabin are usually all quite similar, regardless of airline.

  5. Delta now has 'dynamic' seat maps that automatically block rows for

Delta's "dynamic seat-map algorithm," as the airline calls it, first started rolling out quietly in 2019 and now uses historical booking and seat assignment data to determine how many rows to hold back on a given flight.
