Times tables

Your child will be introduced to times tables at school. The focus this year will be on the 2, 5, and 10 times tables.

Find out what multiplication facts your child already knows, and then see if they can work out more. For example:

Your child might already know that 2 × 5 = 10.   They could use this to work out 2 × 6 by adding another group of 2 to make 12.

Write down the multiplication tables for the 2, 5, and 10 times tables on individual pieces of paper or sticky notes. Ask your child to choose a multiplication calculation such as 8 × 5 and explain how they would work out this problem. If your child knows the answer immediately, ask them what other facts they know. Challenge them to beat the clock when they are reciting their multiplication facts!

Activity: Times tables wall charts

year 2 division homework

3. Practise division

Division can be best understood as   sharing   and   grouping .

Division by sharing

Ask your child to explore division by sharing objects equally. For example:

8 ÷ 2 could be solved by sharing 8 toys into 2 equal groups. The answer is 4, because each group has four toys.

Toys, pieces of pasta, and buttons are all good to practise with.  Ask your child to find out how many objects there are to begin with. Can they share the objects equally between the two of you? Help them to share objects one at a time between the two groups. When all the objects have been shared, ask your child how many there are in each group. If you have the same number, explain that your child has shared the objects equally into two groups which is the same as dividing by two.

If you do not have the same number, ask your child if the objects have been shared equally. For example, ‘we started with 11 objects and shared them into two groups and I have 6 objects and you have 5 objects. Are they equal? If they are not equal then 11 cannot be shared equally into two groups so 11 cannot be divided by 2 equally using whole numbers or objects.’

Video: How to do division by sharing

Division by grouping

It’s important that your child also understands division as grouping. Again, you can use any objects from around your home to practise division as grouping.

Ask your child to find out how many there are in a group of toys or pieces of fruit. Explain to them that you want to find out how many groups of two there are in the total group. Help your child to take two items at a time and count how many groups of two there are in the total number.

For example, if you had 8 objects and wanted to divide by grouping this could be seen as ‘How many groups of 2 are there in 8?’. Ask and support your child to explain that they have divided the 8 objects by grouping them in twos and finding out how many groups of 2 there are in the total group of 8 objects.

Video: How to do division by grouping

4. Find connections in multiplication and division

It will be helpful for your child if they can make connections in multiplication and division. Encourage them to explore the connections between multiplication, arrays and repeated addition.

In terms of division, encourage your child to:

  • Use grouping, sharing, and arrays
  • Think about the relationship between division and repeated subtraction
  • See the connections between fractions and division (for example, 40 ÷ 2 = 20, 20 is half of 40).

You can also help your child use  commutativity and inverse relationships to solve calculations. For example:

If they know that 4 × 5 = 20 , then they know 5 × 4 = 20 because multiplication is commutative (i.e. can be done in any order).   If they know that 4 × 5 = 20 , then they know 20 ÷ 5 = 4 and 20 ÷ 4 = 5 because multiplication and division are inverse operations.

Arrays also provide a great opportunity for children to explore the connections between multiplication and addition, as well as multiplication and division. Give your child a multiplication calculation from the 2, 5, or 10 times tables and ask them to tell you or write down any other related addition, multiplication or division facts. Talking through how they know each fact will help them to understand how the operations relate to each other.

5. Use the language of multiplication and division

It’s helpful to be able to use the language of multiplication and division when talking with your child. Multiplication language includes product ,  multiply ,  multiple ,  times ,  repeated addition ,  equal  groups , and  array . Division language includes  divide ,  sharing equally ,  grouping equally ,  arrays ,   and  remainder .

You can help your child learn these terms by asking them to use this language to explain how they solved a problem. It may be helpful to have the mathematical words written on cards for your child to refer to.

You could also make or print out multiplication and division words cards and ‘×’ and ‘÷’ symbol cards. Help your child read each card and then sort the cards into words that describe multiplication (×) or division (÷). Are there any words that could be placed in both groups? Talk with your child about why these words. This will help them to understand the links between multiplication and division.

Free Year 2 Maths Worksheets And Homework: Printable, Downloadable Or Just View Online

Sophie bessemer.

Here you can find all our free Year 2 maths worksheets and Year 2 maths resources, many of which are suitable for homework and home learning .

All our KS1 and KS2 maths worksheets are printable and most are in pdf format, but they can also be viewed online too. If you’re looking for other slides-based teaching resources and lesson plans, we recommend you look at our range of White Rose maths lessons.

The hope is that these pdf Year 2 maths worksheets and free resources can be used with minimal support from parents as part of a 6 or 7 year old’s Year 2 maths homework routine and by teachers as part of a planned lesson framework.

For parents working with their children at home we would recommend you focus on practising and improving pupils’ core numeracy skills using the numbers worksheets as these generally require less input than topics like geometry – 2d shapes and 3d shapes. Place value and number after all are the building blocks of Key Stage 1 and later Key Stage 2 maths.

We have also included some telling the time worksheets; these will require support from a teacher or parent but the method used is truly revolutionary.

National curriculum guidance is given where relevant and each Year 2 worksheet includes answer sheets.

If you’re a parent then our home learning hub is full of home learning packs , workbooks, tips and further teaching ideas for Year 2 Maths at home and maths homework .

If you’re a teacher or school leader who is interested in improving maths attainment in your school or classroom, then Third Space Learning is here to support you with our online tutoring programme of maths interventions , together with maths resources and CPD.

High school basketball: No. 6 Harvard-Westlake beats No. 14 Roosevelt 54-47 for Southern Section Open Division title

In a battle where stars on both sides shined, No. 6 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.) defeated No. 14 Roosevelt (Eastvale, Calif.) 54-47 on Friday in the Southern Section Open Division final at Cal Baptist University.

Harvard-Westlake held off Roosevelt late as the Mustangs cut the lead down to 50-47 with 38 seconds left. Senior Harvard pledge Robert Hinton put the game out of reach, burying a pair of free throws with 14 seconds remaining to give the Wolverines a 52-47 lead. This is the second straight year that Harvard-Westlake, the reigning CIF Open Division state champions, has won 30 games. The road to state is still a reality for Roosevelt. ...

Last year's experience helped pave way for St. Bonaventure's return to CIF-SS title game

year 2 division homework

The St. Bonaventure High boys basketball team played nine playoff games a year ago, reaching sectional and state regional finals.

The lessons learned during that long run have paved this season’s CIF-Southern Section final return trip.

“I think it’s calmed us down throughout the playoff run,” St. Bonaventure coach Wolfgang Wood said. “We’ve been down at half almost every playoff game. Last year … you felt like you had to get it all back. Whereas our guys, in the locker room, are ‘OK, we got this.’ ”

St. Bonaventure (24-8) will face top-seeded La Habra (28-4) for the Division 3AA championship Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Toyota Arena in Ontario.

“It’s really going to come down to understanding personnel and what their strengths are, and just making it difficult,” Wood said. “La Habra is a really good shooting team.”

More: 'This is historic': Oak Park girls soccer, girls basketball teams ready for CIF-SS finals

Postseason wins at Moreno Valley-Valley View and Gardena-Serra have prepared the Seraphs for the early tipoff after a more than 100-mile journey to Ontario.

“I think it’s also helped us learning how to travel, having to go on the road all the way to Moreno Valley and (Gardena),” Wood said. “I feel like those are intangibles you can’t really coach, you just have to live through.

“Last year’s run made us a lot calmer through adverse situations.”

This will be the program’s fourth sectional final, which includes last year’s 65-62 loss to top-seeded Valencia in the Division 4AA final.

“We were nervous going into that game,” said St. Bonaventure forward Dylan Benner. “It was the first time we’ve ever been there. We just have to be confident now and hopefully that leads to a better outcome.”

St. Bonaventure’s success has been founded on Benner’s wide shoulders. The Army commit is averaging a team-high 18.1 points and 8.9 rebounds as a senior.

But the Seraphs haven’t need their star to carry them through the postseason.

“Offensively, we’ve done a really good job,” Wood said. “It hasn’t just been the Dylan show. It hasn’t been, ‘Here, Dylan, take the ball and win it.’ We’ve had multiple guys step up.”

Benner had 20 points and 13 rebounds in the 59-36 win over visiting Inglewood in the first round, 25 points and 11 rebounds in the 67-53 win over Bonita in the second round, and 25 points and nine rebounds in the 51-44 win at Valley View in the quarterfinals.

But the Seraphs had four score in double figures in the 67-64 semifinal win at Garden-Serra. Guard Jeremy Goodcase had a team-high 18 points and Benner, point guard Sam Seiden and wing Donald Clark IV added 11 points apiece.

“That balance has helped take the pressure off of Dylan, and it’s also made guys step into roles that,” Wood said. “When the time comes, they’re not afraid of that moment.”

Benner is more than happy to share the spotlight with his teammates.

“We all just want to win,” Benner said. “It doesn’t matter who scores what, who gets the most rebounds, we all just want to put a ring on our fingers.”

St. Bonaventure is 0-3 all-time in sectional finals, falling 51-44 to Rosamond in the Division 5A final in 2008 and 55-38 to Hillcrest in the Division 4AA final in 2018 before last year’s tight loss to Valencia.

“I think it would do a lot for them,” said Wood of a potential historic first section title. “They understand how bad they want it because of pride.”

La Habra has won 19 straight games ahead of its first sectional final. Jaedon Anderson scored 24 points, including five of his team’s 11 3-pointers, in a 63-43 semifinal win over Hesperia.

O ne of the best in the Eastern Conference heads west as the Boston Bruins face the Edmonton Oilers . It is time to continue our NHL odds series with a Bruins-Oilers prediction, pick, and how-to-watch.

The Bruins come into the game sitting at 33-12-11 on the year, in the top spot in the Atlantic Division. Still, they have won just one of their last five games. Last time out, they faced the Dallas Stars. The Bruins scored first on a Jersper Boqvist goal, but the Stars would tie the game before the end of the first. In the second, Ryan Suter scored to give the Stars the lead, but Justin Brazeau scored just 28 seconds later to tie the game. In the third, the Stars took the lead again, but David Pastrnak would score his 35th of the year to force overtime. After a scoreless overtime, the Bruins would take the win in a shootout.

Meanwhile, the Oilers are 33-18-1 on the year, sitting in third in the Pacific division. They have won four of their last seven games since they saw their 16-game winning streak broken . Last time out, they visited the Arizona Coyotes. Leon Draisaitl scored on the power play to open the game, and the Oilers would have a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. Still, the Coyotes would score twice in the period, giving them the 3-2 lead heading into the third. In the third, Evander Kane and Zach Hyman scored just 26 seconds apart, and then Kane would add another goal before an empty netter from Warren Foegele, as the Oilers won 6-3.

Why The Bruins Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Bruins sit 13th in the NHL this year in goals per game with 3.32 per game. David Pastrnak leads the team in goals, assists, and points this year. He comes into the game with 35 goals on the year and 45 assists, good for 80 total points. He has been great on the power play as well. Pastrnak comes in with 11 goals and 19 assists on the power play this year. Brad Marchand is second on the team in goals and points this year. He has 25 goals and 26 assists this year, good for 51 points. He has seven goals and 14 assists this year on the power play.

Sitting third on the team in goals is Charlie Coyle. Coyle enters the game with 18 goals and 27 assists this year, good for 45 points. However, he has not had the same level of success on the power play. Coyle has just four goals and two assists on the power play. Meanwhile, the Bruins also get help on the offensive end from the blue line. Charlie McAvoy comes in fourth on the team in points. He has eight goals and 30 assists this year, good for 38 points. That places him one point ahead of James van Riemsdyk on the year.

The Bruins have also been solid on the power play this year, sitting ninth in the NHL with a 23.4 percent success rate. Further, they have been solid on the penalty kill, sitting with an 81.4 percent success rate, 11th in the NHL.

The Bruins are expected to start Linus Ullmark in goal for this one. He comes into the game sitting at 16-6-4 on the year with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. Ullmark was not at his best last time out, allowing five goals and 35 shots, and losing in overtime. That is the second time this month he has lost in overtime after shutting out the Canucks to open February.

Why The Oilers Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Oilers come into the game sitting fifth in the NHL in goals per game with 3.56 goals per contest this year. They are led in points by Connor McDavid. McDavid comes into the game sitting tied third on the team in goals and first in assists. He has 21 goals and 62 assists this year, good for 83 points. Further, he has five goals and 23 assists on the power play. Leading in goals on the power play, and second on the team in goals, assists, and points, is Leon Draisaitl. Draisaitl comes into the game with 27 goals and 41 assists, good for 68 total points. Further, he has 13 goals and 13 assists on the power play.

Zach Hyman is the leader of the team in terms of goals. He comes into the game with 33 goals on the year. Further, he has added 18 assists, good for 51 total points. He also has nine goals and four assists on the power play. Adding to the point production is Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Nugent-Hopkins comes into the goal with 14 goals and 39 assists for the year. Three of the goals and 14 assists come on the power play. Also, the Oilers get help on offense from the blue line. Evan Bouchard comes into the game with 14 goals and 39 assists.

The Oilers are fourth in the NHL on the power play this year, converting 26.8 percent of their chances this year. Further, they are 16th in the NHL on the penalty kill this year,  sitting with a 79.4 percent success rate this year.

Stuart Skinner is expected to be in goal for the Oilers in this game. He is 25-12-1 on the year with a 2.57 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. While Skinner has won just two of his last five starts, he has struggled some. In his last five games, he has a 3.46 goals-against average and a .880 save percentage. Skinner has a save percentage of .880 or worse in each of his last four starts.

Final Bruins-Oilers Prediction & Pick

While both goalies coming into this game can be shut down at any time, allowing very few goals, both teams can also put up plenty of goals. Stuart Skinner has not been playing great as of late, while the Bruins have also been giving up goals as of late. In their last five games, they have allowed 18 goals. Expect this game to be a little higher scoring, and take the over.

Climax-Scotts/Martin loses in quarterfinals; vows to return to states next year

No. 8-ranked climax-scotts/martin sees no. 2 st. louis as it competes in second straight mhsaa state team finals at wings stadium.

year 2 division homework

KALAMAZOO - The Climax-Scotts/Martin co-op wrestling team wanted another shot at competing in the state finals at Wings Stadium.

The program got its wish, but still came up just a bit short of its ultimate goal of a run to the state championship round.

Climax-Scotts/Martin lost to No. 2-ranked St. Louis, 39-26, in the Division 4 state quarterfinals on Friday at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo as part of the early action at the MHSAA state team wrestling finals. St. Louis advances to see Benzie Central in the state semifinals on Saturday. In the other side of the bracket, No. 5 Manchester defeated No. 4 Bronson, 30-22, and No. 1 Hudson beat Saginaw Lutheran Seminary, 72-3.

It is the second straight season No. 8-ranked Climax-Scotts/Martin has advanced to the state team wrestling finals at Wings Stadium, earning an upset win in the quarterfinals a year ago. This time around, C-S/Martin ran into a deep St. Louis team and saw its dream run end early.

MORE WRESTLING:

'We are ready for this': Climax-Scotts/Martin back at state team wrestling finals

Harper Creek, Lakeview lead a large group of area wrestlers heading to the state finals

"It's been such a great experience coming back, we proved all season that we deserved to be here. We just didn't capitalize on our opportunity today," Climax-Scotts/Martin junior Jackson Bagwell said. "They are a tough team. We needed some upsets to go our way, but that didn't happen and that's just the way it goes sometimes."

This co-op team features a heavy dose of Climax-Scotts wrestlers, including eight starters: Logan Gilbert (106 pounds), Kristian Heighton (113), Cole Reitz (120), Jackson Bagwell (150), Joshua Walman (165), Malcolm Smith (175), Sam Bleeker (215) and Max Bleeker (285).

Among that group, Gilbert, Reitz and Bagwell came up with wins by decision on the mat. Also getting victories for C-S/Martin included Haylen Buell (138), as well as Walman and Smith earning points by forfeit at the end of the dual when St. Louis had the win clinched.

Those wins and points weren't enough to dig Climax-Scotts/Martin out of an early hole when St. Louis won the first three matches, as the dual started at 190 pounds.

"Hard to start with a couple losses and get that turned around. It was hard to battle back from that," said Climax-Scotts/Martin coach Mike Reitz.

The loss didn't take away from the milestone experience of getting to Wings Stadium to compete on the big stage.

"There have been a lot of classes, that went through this co-op, that never had this opportunity to be here," Reitz said. "There have been a lot of years that we didn't get this far. This group, especially these underclassmen, that weren't in the lineup today, but got to see it and be apart of this, this was huge."

The Climax-Scotts/Martin co-op only includes a handful of seniors on the entire roster and features six wrestlers who have qualified for the individual state meet this year as underclassmen. With that group returning, Climax-Scotts/Martin expects to be right back at Wings Stadium a year from now for a third straight trip.

"You look at the guys we have that are juniors, who are going to be seniors next year, it's looking like the best team that we are going to ever have since we started this co-op," Reitz said. "We have a great opportunity of getting back here next year. But there has to be some dedication to work hard if we want it.

"We have been here back-to-back. But we showed today, the work is not done. It's not enough just to get here. We want more than that and we have to work hard to get that done."
