T-Mobile for Business puts the spotlight on small businesses across the country

t-mobile-for-small-business-plans

Earlier today, T-Mobile for Business revealed three new small business plans under the name Business Unlimited. In addition to these new plans, T-Mobile for Business has announced its new fixed wireless internet, Facebook Advertising on Us with digital advertising, and digital marketing resources exclusively for small businesses. This is T-Mobile’s way of helping the small business owners cope as they go through the economical effects of the pandemic.

Here is more information on these new developments:

T-Mobile Business Unlimited Plans

These are the three small business plans that T-Mobile for Business has unveiled today. As of this writing, these are the only small business plans available in the country.

  • Business Unlimited Select $25/line/month – This plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and 50GB of “Premium Data”, 5GB high-speed mobile hotspot; unlimited texting and 2G data overseas; and unlimited talk, text and 2G data in Canada and Mexico. The plan, however, reduces the speed during times of network congestion.
  • Business Unlimited Advanced $30/line/month – This plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and 100GB of “Premium Data”, 40GB high-speed mobile hotspot, 1 hour of Gogo In-Flight Wi-Fi; unlimited texting and 2G data overseas; unlimited talk, text and 5G high-speed data in Canada and Mexico; HD video streaming; and Microsoft 365 on Us.
  • Business Unlimited Ultimate $40/line/month – This plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and “Premium Data”, 100GB high-speed mobile hotspot, 1 hour of Gogo In-Flight Wi-Fi; 4K video streaming; Microsoft 365 on Us; and 2x faster data internationally (256Kbps).

T-Mobile Small Business Internet

The need to stay online is greatly experienced by small businesses. Thankfully, T-Mobile for Business has introduced a way to address this need with its new fixed wireless internet service that costs $60/month with AutoPay and no annual contracts. It also doesn’t include any caps or overage penalties.

Once you sign up for this service, T-Mobile will ship a state-of-the-art Nokia 5G router to your business location, included in your monthly price with no added equipment fees. You can then perform the installation in minutes, without the need to pay for hookup fees. The service also comes with access to a team of dedicated experts who you can call whenever you need them.

For a limited time period, T-Mobile for Business is running a promotion on this service. When you sign up for the service between June 1st and June 30th, you can enjoy $10 off on the monthly rate. This means that you will only have to pay $50/month (with AutoPay) throughout the duration of the qualifying line. You can learn more about this offer here .

Facebook Advertising on Us

T-Mobile knows that in order to help your business succeed, you need to take things to social media. And one way you can do that is by doing ads the right way. This is why T-Mobile for Business has teamed up with Facebook experts to help improve your business’ digital marketing strategy.

The partnership gives small businesses three one-on-one consultations with a Facebook marketing expert. It also gives access to educational resources and thought leadership content to help you make the most out of your Facebook advertising strategies.

Not only that, every small business on T-Mobile with three or more lines will get $200 in digital advertising to use to market their business on Facebook and Instagram’s platform.

T-Mobile for Business’ Opportunity Sweepstakes

Lastly, T-Mobile for Business is running an Opportunity Sweepstakes for small businesses throughout the country.

When you join, you have a chance to win a 5G makeover for your business. You can be among the winners of the following:

  • Six small businesses will win a 5G smartphone or tablet
  • Five small businesses will win a package of five 5G devices
  • Two small businesses will win a full 5G makeover with five 5G smartphones, a 5G tablet, and $5000 to spend on anything

You can join this sweepstakes between June 1st and July 16th. For more information, visit this page .

These new developments will be available starting June 1st. To kick off its launch, T-Mo will be hosting a Facebook Live conversation with FUBU founder & CEO/ABC’s Shark Tank, Daymond John and T-Mobile for Business’ EVP, Mike Katz. The talk will take place virtually on June 1st at 11:00am PT. You can learn more about this here .

T-Mobile business mobile plan vs. Verizon business mobile plans

If you’re looking to get started with a new mobile phone plan, one of your first decisions is to choose what type of plan you want. Two popular options in the US are T-Mobile business mobile plans and Verizon business customers’ phone plans . And of course, there is also AT & T and Sprint.

All of these carriers and their business phone plans have their upsides and downsides. For example, Verizon business customers’ phone plans are known for their flexibility, but they may not offer what you need if you’re looking for a specific set of features.

On the other hand, T-Mobile business mobile plans might be more limited regarding what features you can pick and choose. Still, they offer an excellent value for your money with included features that might otherwise be add-ons with other providers.

If you’re trying to decide which plan is best for your needs, there’s no single correct answer. You’ll have to weigh your budget and priorities against the different types of plans available on the market today.

T-Mobile business mobile plan-data plans with an end device

A data plan is the amount of data your business can use each month for online roaming, streaming and browsing. Data plans come in many shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: they are designed to keep your company connected to the internet.

When you select a data plan, you’re choosing how much data your company will be able to use each month. Some companies may only need 200 MB/month, while others require 1 TB/month or more. You choose a T-Mobile business mobile plan that gives you enough data to power your business without overpaying for something you don’t need.

Some companies offer unlimited plans, but these plans can be fairly expensive—and if you don’t need unlimited data, they aren’t worth the extra cost. If you aren’t sure how much data your company needs, talk to an expert! They’ll be able to help you figure out what kind of plan is best for your business’s needs and budget.

DRAFT: REWRITE: The 5 Best Business Cell Phone Plans of 2023

Business.org’s 5 best business cell phone plans

At&t: best full-featured plans.

Looking for a broad choice of bells and whistles? As a telecom behemoth, AT&T has plenty of cell phone features and packages to offer businesses—around 20 plan variations, small to large. All plans include free US roaming, unlimited talk and text messages, as well as unlimited texting outside of the country. Basic features like call forwarding, voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, and conference calling also come standard with all AT&T business cell phone plans, along with bring-your-own-phone support.

AT&T's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Business Unlimited plan prices start at $30 a month per line when you sign up for 6+ lines, or $60 a month for one line. Data is unlimited, but speeds may slow down after reaching the GB included in each plan.

AT&T business plans can also accommodate up to 10 lines per account, and they come fully loaded with perks like AT&T ActiveArmor SM mobile security and Video Management. Video Management automatically optimizes streaming video on your phone to 480p so you can watch webinars on the go without dealing with a blurry picture.

Each plan also includes a decent array of iOS and Android smartphone options and even a few good old flip phones. Users can save money when bundling AT&T-owned DIRECTV services (because, again, telecom behemoth). Military veterans can also qualify for a 25% discount on Business Unlimited plans.

Users are eligible for a discount if they elect for autopay and paperless billing, but this discount is only applied until after two pay periods. We don't know why the discount cannot be applied earlier in the billing process, but we do find it frustrating.

T-Mobile: Best flexible plans

Not sure exactly what you’ll need in a mobile plan besides future adaptability? T-Mobile, the third-largest wireless service in the US, offers three business plans, all packed with unique features that set T-Mobile apart from the rest. The German-owned company has also earned a reputation for stellar customer service and was the first to eliminate annual contracts (an idea that stuck—none of the plans reviewed on this page require contracts). In April 2018, the company announced its intention to merge with Sprint under the T-Mobile banner.

T-Mobile's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *Price available with 6+ lines

All of T-Mobile’s Business cell phone plans offer the same basic features:

  • Unlimited talk and text
  • Unlimited 5G and 4G LTE data on their network
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot
  • Scam Shield
  • Unlimited calling and texting to Mexico & Canada
  • Unlimited video streaming

In addition, all T-Mobile Business plans include DIGITS, an app that allows you to access up to five phone numbers on a single device. That means you could answer calls to your work number and personal number on one device—no more packing two phones in your bag every day. DIGITS also lets you share your phone number across multiple devices, so you can answer on your phone, smartwatch, tablet, or computer.

T-Mobile’s Business plans cover up to 12 lines. If you need more than 12 lines, you’ll need to sign up for the Enterprise Phone Plan (13+ lines). This includes a fixed rate of $285 per month for 13 lines, plus $25 per month for each additional line.

T-Mobile plans also allow bring-your-own-device convenience, or you can buy phones upfront with a single payment (there are nearly 40 iOS and Android phones to choose from).

I couldn't find solid info verifying this pricing so I'm not sure if it's still accurate

Now that T-Mobile and Sprint have been merged for almost six months, some significant changes have taken effect. T-Mobile’s website is now the only place businesses can sign up for Sprint or T-Mobile business phone accounts.

Sprint still has an active business website for previous users but all new plans will be sold by T-Mobile on its website.

Verizon: Best growing business plans

Serving over 150 million customers, Verizon isn’t just big, it’s BIG. Such a mobile mammoth might not seem like the obvious choice for a small business, but for what it lacks in a personalized customer service reputation, Verizon more than makes up for by offering every cell phone feature there is, as well as dominant US, and near-dominant global, coverage. Like McDonald’s and Marvel movies, Verizon is everywhere.

Verizon's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *With 5+ lines

While business owners can get business cell phone plans with limited data, we recommend choosing an unlimited plan if you have multiple employees (or do a lot of work via cell phone).

Verizon’s Business Unlimited cell phone plans are scalable for multiple employees. With plans starting at just $30 per line, Verizon Business Unlimited plans are an attractive option, whether you’re running a tiny company with no expansion plans, a medium-sized business with an eye toward growth, or a large enterprise with heavy cell phone requirements.

Verizon Business Unlimited Plus and Pro plans also include a TravelPass (2–4 days per month), so you can do business around the world. Each plan also includes unlimited calling and texting to Mexico and Canada.

Verizon doesn’t skimp on device choices either. There are nearly 100 iOS and Android phones and tablets available—including the Verizon Orbic Speed, a mobile hotspot device that can connect 10 devices to an 802.11 ac Wi-Fi network.

If your company requires truly “unlimited” cell phone service and scalability to grow, and is in the position to pay for functionality with frills, Verizon Business Unlimited is the way to go. Bare-bones operations, however, might want to look elsewhere.

Each of our recommendations has its strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes the most difficult part about finding a phone system is determining exactly what you need and don't need. The best place to start is separating your needs between installing a new system, replacing a system, or expanding an existing system.

If you are having trouble sorting out exactly what your phone needs are, use this tool to help you understand what the best options are for your unique needs.

MintMobile: Most affordable plans

We are sure you’ve seen the commercials with Ryan Reynolds talking about this phone carrier business with a fox logo called Mint Mobile. In fact, a lot of Mint customers were drawn to Mint because of Ryan Reynolds's Hollywood looks, but that’s not the only thing Mint has to offer.

Mint is inexpensive and transparent, compared to other cell phone carriers with hidden fees and seemingly random regulations.

MintMobile's business cell phone plans

These are the prices for new customers and will last up to three months. After the third month, you are eligible to sign up for a 3, 6, or 12-month contract on one of the tiered plans, all $35/mo/user or under, which is astronomically less than other providers.

MintMobile is no fuss, and you really do feel like you must be tricking the rest of the world with its pricing. The only issue is that MintMobile is an online company, and coverage is not completely everywhere yet. There are still some coverage gaps in the West, namely Nevada, Idaho, and Arizona. If you live east of the Rocky Mountains, you are good to go!

Teltik: Best perks plans

If you’re a strapped startup, New Jersey’s Teltik can get you up and running on the cheap. Teltik is a reseller service operating on T-Mobile’s 4G LTE and 5G network, meaning it can offer the reliability and reach of a giant provider at smaller-company prices. Teltik also has the advantage of being completely US-based, with 24/7 local customer service that’s not outsourced overseas.

Teltik's business cell phone plans

3 more (non-business) cell phone plans reviewed by business.org.

Teltik appears to have a dozen plans, but they’re mostly just variations of the essential plan that offers all the expected basics. Not coincidentally, the features mirror those of T-Mobile, as they’re on the same network.

The most basic plan starts at $20 a month and includes unlimited calling and texting, mobile hotspot service, and unlimited data—with a 2 GB cap on 5G speeds (meaning your speed gets throttled to 128 Kbps if you use more than 2 GB of data in a month). From there, you can upgrade your plan to include more 4G or 5G data and more mobile hotspot data. Upgraded plans cost anywhere from $30 to $40 per month, and they all include one cloud-phone VoIP line—perfect for small businesses looking to save on all their telecommunications needs.

One distinctly entertaining feature (pun intended) of Teltik’s business plans? You get unlimited media streaming from over 40 music services (including Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music) and more than 100 video services (including YouTube, Netflix, and any other channel you can think of). That means you can stream as much TV as you want without it eating into your data. It’s almost as if Teltik doesn’t want you to get any work done.

Another thing you need to know: Teltik doesn’t sell phones. Instead, the company operates on a strict bring-your-own-device basis. Any unlocked phone will work with its network, as will any T-Mobile device, of course. However, you will have to spend $10 plus shipping and handling to buy a new SIM card for each of your devices (unless they’ve already got brand-new, unused T-Mobile SIM cards).

Boost Mobile

The takeaway

Assess your company’s current cell phone usage and projected future needs before diving into any plan. What looks like a great deal could turn out to be more than you actually need—or you may have initially underestimated your business’s cell phone requirements. Also, if your company has both cell phone and regular office phone needs, look into bundling. The larger telecom providers offer both types of phone coverage, and bundling services is an easy way to save money in the long run.

Don’t want to carry around separate phones for work and personal calls? With the right VoIP service, you don’t have to. Check out our favorite business VoIP providers to see which ones offer on-the-go business phone capabilities.

Business cell phone plan FAQs

If you have several employees working outside of the office on a regular basis, desk-bound phones obviously aren’t going to work for them. Some may be only calling and texting while others will be checking email, using GPS navigation, and accessing the internet for work, but a cell phone is a must for employees in the field.

If you’re a one-person operation accountable to only yourself, you could get by with a personal cell plan. Keeping track of multiple employees’ hours, data, and providers, however, would be an extra headache you don’t need. For streamlining and collaboration purposes, a business cell phone plan would be the easier route.

Most of the plans we’ve reviewed here offer unlimited data—domestically, at least—so hitting the data ceiling won’t likely be an issue. But if you want to forecast how much data your business uses every month, or want to figure out how much premium data you’ll need, providers make data plan estimators available on their websites. Or you could use a third-party calculator app.

BYOD stands for bring your own device . Another common term is BYOP for bring your own phone . This means that employees are using their personal phones, tablets, or laptops on their own carrier plans for work or that they’ve put those devices on the company’s plan. The upside? It’s less expensive than buying devices. The downside? Extra security concerns.

In the annoying absence of Wi-Fi, you can use a cell phone signal to connect a wireless device to the internet by switching on the mobile hotspot option and simply treating it like a Wi-Fi router. For multiple device connections, a dedicated hotspot (such as Verizon’s Orbic Speed ) can provide a faster, and more stable, connection.

Is T-Mobile a good carrier?

Finding the best T-Mobile cell phone plans sounds like an easy proposition, given the wireless carrier's reputation for being customer friendly. But it's trickier than you might think.

1. The quick list 2. The best T-Mobile plan overall 3. The best value T-Mobile 4. The best T-Mobile plan for families 5. The best T-Mobile plan for seniors 6. The best T-Mobile plan for travelers 7. The best T-Mobile plan for streamers 8. Other T-Mobile plans 9. Getting T-Mobile coverage on a budget 10. Is T-Mobile a good carrier?

It's not because of the lack of value. Typically, T-Mobile charges less than its competitors for comparable service. Rather, finding the right plan at T-Mobile is complicated by the fact that there are so many plans — a half-dozen by our count, and that's leaving out the options for customers 55 years and older.

Adding to the difficulty is the fact that not every plan is visible when you look at T-Mobile's website — you've got to know where to look to find every available plan. And the once you've found everything, you've got to dig into the details of the different options to see which plans deliver which benefits.

Have no fear, though. We've already done a lot of those comparisons as part of our research into the best cell phone plans . So we're very familiar with the best T-Mobile phone plans and which ones you'd be better off ignoring.

At least, T-Mobile offers some of the best unlimited data plans out there, and if you need more than one line, you'll find some of the best family cell phone plans , too. There's even choices for people who don't need a lot of data as well as discounts for seniors who are 55 years or older.

T-Mobile plan options may be complicated, but that means a wide range of prices that match up well to what rival carriers have to offer. And as affordable as T-Mobile is, you can enjoy the benefits of its network through mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) like Mint Mobile and Tello that use T-Mobile towers to provide coverage of their own.

If you want to find a great option at T-Mobile, here are our picks for the best T-Mobile cell phone plans for a variety of different customers.

The quick list

T-Mobile Go5G | unlimited data | $75/month - T-Mobile's best plan plan With few exceptions, T-Mobile plans mean unlimited data, and the best of the bunch is T-Mobile's Go5G offering. At $75 for a single line, it features a few more perks than the slightly cheaper Magenta plan such as 15GB of hotspot data instead of 5GB and double the data (10GB) you can use when traveling in Mexico and Canada. Go5G customers are also eligible for the same upgrade offers available to new customers, making it easier to switch to a different phone. Pros: More hotspot and roaming data than Magenta; Easily to upgrade device Cons: More expensive than Magenta

Best value plan at T-Mobile

T-Mobile Connect | 3.5GB data | $15/month — Best low-cost T-Mobile cell phone planPros:Cons:

T-Mobile Connect | 3.5GB data | $15/month — Best low-cost T-Mobile cell phone plan T-Mobile's Connect plan is a great option if you're on a tighter budget and don't need a lot of data. Currently, you get 3.5GB of data. (T-Mobile boosts the plan's allotment by 500MB every year through 2025.) That data pool costs only $15 a month. Be aware that with this prepaid plan, once you're out of data, you've hit your cap and can't keep using data, even at slower speeds. You can upgrade to T-Mobile's connect plan with 6.5GB of data instead for $25/month, while there's a 1GB option available for just $10/month. (That latter plan remains capped at 1GB.) Pros: Low costs, 500MB data boosts annually Cons: Out of data once you hit your cap

The best T-Mobile cell phone plan for families

T-Mobile Go5G | unlimited data | $180/month (4 lines) - T-Mobile's best family planPros:Cons:

T-Mobile Go5G | unlimited data | $180/month (4 lines) - T-Mobile's best family plan Families should also turn to the Go5G plan, as discounts for every line you add help keep the cost lower than family plans at other carriers, not to mention T-Mobile's own plans. You get the same hotspot and travel benefits a single linge of Go5G enjoys, and once you add two or more lines, T-Mobile includes a free Netflix subscription with your plan. T-Mobile frequently runs a promotion that waives the price of the third line of data, brining the cost of this plan down to $155 for four lines. Pros: More hotspot and roaming data than Magenta; Includes Netflix subscription Cons: Families an't mix and match different T-Mobile plans

However, you are limited to SD streaming, and if you're in Mexico or Canada, you can only use 2G data. T-Mobile Go5G Next | unlimited data | $100/month or $260 for 4 lines Go5G Next is T-Mobile's most expensive plan, and it has all the perks of Go5G Plus. So why pay extra? If you're a streamer, you get the ad-supported tier of Hulu with Go5G Next to go along with Netflix and Apple TV Plus. Those extra streaming services can save you money elsewhere in your budget. You also get to upgrade your phone every year under Go5G Next. Pros: Lots of streaming perks; Extensive travel benefits; Ability to upgrade phone every year Cons: T-Mobile's most expensive option

Other T-Mobile plans

We're highlighting the best T-Mobile cell phone plans for particular situations, but these aren't your only option at the Uncarrier. Here's a quick summary of the other plans currently on offer at T-Mobile.

T-Mobile unlimited data plans

Why you can trust Tom's Guide Our writers and editors spend hours analyzing and reviewing products, services, and apps to help find what's best for you. Find out more about how we test, analyze, and rate.

  • Magenta Max ($85/month): One of T-Mobile's older offerings, this plan includes the same travel benefits as Go5G Plus, though you only get 5GB of data to use in Mexico and Canada. You're also limited ot 40GB of hotspot data.
  • Magenta ($70/month): Essentially, the Magenta plan is just like the Go5G plan, but with less hotspot data (5GB instead of 15GB) and only 5GB of data when traveling in Mexico and Canada.
  • Essentials ($60/month): This is T-Mobile's cheapest unlimited data plan, with only 3G speeds for hotspot data and few other perks. Your data speeds can be slowed if you use more than 50GB in a month.

T-Mobile senior plans

  • Go5G Next 55 ($120/month for two lines): The senior version of Go5G Next, this plan lets you upgrade your smartphone every year.
  • Go5G Plus 55 ($100/month for two lines): Anyone 55 years or older can get a discounted rate on the Go5G Plus plan, while receiving the same streaming and travel benefits included with unlimited data.

T-Mobile prepaid plans

  • 12GB plan: T-Mobile's most expensive prepaid plan costs $35/month.
  • 6.5GB plan: Like the 3.5GB connect plan, T-Mobile adds 500MB of data every year through 2025. This plan costs $25/month.
  • 1GB plan: T-Mobile's cheapest prepaid plan is for people with minimal data needs. It costs $10/month.

Low-cost T-Mobile alternatives

Pricing on the best T-Mobile cell phone plans compares very well to comparable service at AT&T and Verizon , particularly when it comes to unlimited data plans. But there's a way to get T-Mobile service for even less — turn to a discount carrier that uses T-Mobile's network to provide low-cost coverage.

Such a service is known as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), and there are plenty that use T-Mobile for coverage. Our favorite happens to be Mint Mobile (which T-Mobile is actually in the process of buying). Mint offers four plans , ranging in price between $15 (5GB) and $30 (unlimited data) per month. You get those low rates by paying for your service in advance — prepaying for a year of data gets you the very best rate at Mint.

Mint's a popular choice because it includes full coverage on T-Mobile, including 5G speeds if you've got a comparable phone. As with any MVNO, you do risk seeing your traffic slowed if the network is congested and T-Mobile prioritizes its own customers.

Other MVNOs using T-Mobile's network include Tello, TextNow and Metro by T-Mobile. The latter service is owned and operated by T-Mobile.

T-Mobile is not just a good carrier — it's currently the runner-up in our best phone phone carriers rankings. This position comes down to a couple of benefits and factors T-Mobile does very well.

When it comes to terms of plans and offers, T-Mobile is one of the most diverse options. It offers a wide array of prices that span family plans, unlimited data choices, prepaid plans and more.

Past that, our LTE network testing showed that T-Mobile is one of the faster carriers available, and subsequent testing by third parties backs that claim. In Ookla's most recent testing , T-Mobile was rated the fastest mobile operator in the U.S. with the best download and upload speeds.

T=Mobile also ranks well in 5G performance testing by third parties, with RootMetrics currently rating T-Mobile tops for 5G speeds and availability. (Verizon's 5G is judged to be more reliable.) T-Mobile's 5G service reaches more than 330 million people and through its incorporation of Sprint, 5G speeds have increased further by adding Sprints 5G into the spectrum. T-Mobile now offers its fastest 5G to 300 million people after an aggressive upgrade program.

T-Mobile also has weekly giveaways and a host of incentives for its customers. For instance, this year, it's offering T-Mobile customers the MLS Season Pass that streams ever Major League Soccer match through the Apple TV Plus streaming service. Overall, T-Mobile finishes in the runner-up spot among phone carriers thanks to its blend of affordability, features, the number of options and its great coverage; the carrier has been the victim of several embarrassing data breaches, though.

Best T-Mobile plans in 2023: Pricing, phone options, and more

T-Mobile logo

T-Mobile is one of the fastest-growing carriers in the United States thanks to aggressive pricing, marketing, and a penchant for doing the unexpected. The Uncarrier has significantly shaken up the mobile industry in the US, but is it the right carrier for you? Let’s look at the best T-Mobile plans and how they compare to the competition. After that, we’ll also help you pick the best T-Mobile phone for your needs.

The best T-Mobile plans at a glance

T-Mobile’s plans offer quite a bit of overlap, as you can tell from the chart above. This is especially true now that we have the Go 5G plans, which at first glance, aren’t too different from what they already offered. Wondering which plan is right for you?

  • Go5G plans are perfect for families and frequent travelers. The Go5G plans really aren’t much different from the older Magneta plan, with all the same perks included, like Netflix Basic for accounts with at least two lines and a 6-month trial to Apple TV. The biggest difference is you get much more high-speed hotspot data, with 15GB in the basic G05G plan and a whopping 50GB for those who go for the Plus option. It’s also only $5 more a month for those with one or two lines, and CHEAPER for those with 3 or more lines.
  • Go5G Next is for those who want to upgrade regularly. Go5G Next is the latest plan in the Go5G line. You get all the same perks as the Go5G Plus plan but with the added benefit of upgrading a phone up to once a year, as long as you’ve already paid for half of it. Nothing else is really different, though the added feature will cost you as it starts at $100 a line.
  • T-Mobile Magenta is the best alternative to Go5G for those that don’t care about hotspot use. Magenta used to be T-Mobile’s best plan for most users, but that’s no longer the case. We really don’t recommend Magenta as it only costs $5 less per line for 1-2 lines, and it’s $3+ more for those with at least three lines. Still, if you don’t want the extra high-speed hotspot access, Magenta offers pretty much identical service to Go5G’s base plan, including unlimited data and 100GB priority data. You also get all-you-can-eat 3G hotspot data, for what that’s worth.
  • Magneta Max is for those who use a LOT of mobile data. This plan is quite expensive, but if you use a ton of mobile data and want to avoid deprioritization during congestion, this is the plan you’ll want to get. Max gives you unlimited priority data. You also get Apple TV for free, in addition to Netflix Basic. Unlike the other plans, there’s also higher-definition streaming.
  • Essentials is a good postpaid choice if you’re looking to save money. Starting at $50 for one line but going as cheap as $25 a line for four lines, Essentials is the cheapest postpaid option. You don’t get Netflix or Apple TV, but you do get unlimited 3G hotspot access and 50GB of priority data. You also will have postpaid extras like the ability to finance a phone, free phone upgrades for select devices, and more. That said, IF you don’t mind paying upfront for your phones, T-Mobile’s Prepaid Unlimited is actually a better option for some consumers.

That’s a TL;DR look at the best postpaid T-mobile plans, but be aware a recent leak suggests T-Mobile is getting ready to force Magenta customers onto its more expensive Go5G plans , though you’ll be able to switch back later.

Let’s also not forget the carrier also offers great prepaid options that require no credit check or obligation. Unlike most carriers, T-Mobile also gives its prepaid customers nearly the same network priority as postpaid customers, especially if the plan includes premium data.

Here’s what T-Mobile Prepaid has to offer at a glance:

  • Prepaid Unlimited is the best-prepaid choice for most. Not only is this the best choice for most prepaid users, but it’s also the best choice for those looking for a budget unlimited option PERIOD. Not only is Prepaid Unlimited $10 less per line than Essentials, it’s higher up in the data priority chain too. The postpaid service does have a few small advantages, which we’ll highlight further down.
  • Prepaid Unlimited Plus is for those who need high-speed hotspot access. There’s nothing different about the Plus option other than it gives you a few extra perks, including 10GB of 4G LTE hotspot access. Unless you really need higher speed hotspot access, you’re probably better off with Prepaid Unlimited.
  • T-Mobile Connect is for those who want a no-frills, budget option. Looking to keep things simple and only need a single line? Connect starts at just $10 a month for 1,000 minutes of talk, 1,000 texts, and just 1GB of data. If you need a bit more, $15 will give you unlimited talk and text and 3.5GB data. All other Connect plans have unlimited talk and text, but $25 a month gives you 6.5GB of data, and $35 nets 12GB.

Not overwhelmed by choice yet? There are also MVNOs that run on T-Mobile’s network but are not officially operated by the carrier. This includes Metro by T-Mobile as well as completely independent options, like Mint Mobile . We’ll talk about those a bit later in this guide.

T-Mobile Prepaid vs Postpaid: What’s the difference?

As you can see, there are a lot of similarities between T-Mobile’s different prepaid and postpaid offerings. So what’s the real difference between the two? Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of prepaid service:

  • Typically cheaper pricing and less commitment
  • Similar network prioritization as you’ll find on T-Mobile’s postpaid service
  • You’ll get quality network service, but much weaker customer service
  • You won’t typically get the extra perks you’d get with post-paid, like free streaming services, phone financing, etc

That’s honestly the biggest difference: customer service and extras. Believe it or not, network quality is not a major difference, though. In fact, as we highlighted above, T-Mobile Prepaid Unlimited is actually prioritized above the postpaid Essentials plan.

Notably, T-Mobile charges customers a $5 surcharge if they pay their bill in-store. To avoid this, users must pay on the web through T-Mobile.com, via the T-Mobile app, or set up autopay.

Which of T-Mobile’s plans do we recommend?

T Mobile logo

We’ve already highlighted which plans are best for what kind of users in the section above, but which ones do I recommend personally? That’s easy. For those who have families or travel frequently, sign up for Go5G. It’s the perfect balance of value and features and doesn’t have any of the downsides associated with prepaid plans. Can’t live without high-quality streaming and use a lot of mobile data? Then I say get Magenta Plus. It’s a good service with tons of extras, but it’s also pretty expensive.

For those looking to save? We’d pick up Connect only if you really want to pay the least possible, as the plan is very competitive when pitted against other prepaid carriers that use T-Mobile’s network.

What if you want unlimited service but just can’t stomach paying the premium you’ll find on Magenta Max or Go5G? That’s where it gets trickier. In most cases, we’d recommend Prepaid Unlimited, despite the downsides to prepaid service. But if you have three or more lines, the postpaid Essentials plan is a better deal. The only major downside is Essentials has lower network priority than Prepaid Unlimited (yes you read that right).

Below we take a closer look at our favorite plans and dive into what makes them stand out.

Go5G: The best T-Mobile plan for frequent travelers and families

The Go5G plan is basically just a repackaged version of the older Magenta plan with more hotspot data and a few other perks suited for frequent travelers. Lines start at $75 for Go5G. That’s $5 more a month than Magenta, but you get 15GB of high-speed hotspot data versus the paltry 5GB offered on Magenta. Those that need even more hotspot data should consider Go5G Plus, which starts at $90 a line but includes unlimited data with no deprioritization.

Go5G and Magenta both give you unlimited talk, text, and 100GB of premium data; all three benefits are available in 11 countries, but you can only use 5GB abroad before it drops to 2G speeds. Go5G and Go5G Plus users have one advantage here over Magenta: you get 10GB of high-speed data in Canada and Mexico. As for streaming services, Go5G and Magenta offer a Netflix Basic plan and six months of Apple TV Plus access.

Ultimately we’d pick Go5G over Magenta, but if you have two lines or fewer, you’ll save $5 on Magenta for those who don’t care about hotspot access. For families, it actually costs more on Magenta.  Also, be aware that Go5G Next is a good option if you want the added benefit of yearly phone upgrades.

  • It includes taxes and fees in your monthly rate.
  • Plans with two or more lines include one screen of Netflix Basic free.
  • Affordable pricing for those with a family.
  • It limits video streaming to standard definition (480p).

Magenta Max: The best T-Mobile plan for those who want MOAR

If you want the biggest and best that T-Mobile offers, Magenta Max or Go5G Plus are the way to go.

For Max you’ll play $85 per month for one line, two lines are $70 each, and four lines are just $50 each. All the unlimited perks remain the same as Magenta and Go5G, and your international data is available at double speeds. Go5G Plus has all the same benefits as Max but is $10 more per line and has significantly more hotspot data.

Unlike other plans from T-mobile, Max and Plus are the only services that let you stream in up to 4K. The perks don’t end there.

Instead of one hour of in-flight Wi-Fi, Magenta Max and Go5G Plus provide unlimited Wi-Fi and texting for the duration of your flight. They also add Scam Shield Premium to the mix, which allows you to block or screen calls you may not want. You can stream up to 40GB of high-speed hotspot data on Max, but after that, you’ll drop to 3G speeds.

Finally, Magenta Max and Go5G Plus take its streaming perks further than Magenta and Go5G. You’ll get Apple TV for free instead of limiting it to six months. Not impressed? You’ll also get the standard version of Netflix, instead of the Basic tier.

  • Video streaming is available in up to 4K UHD resolution.
  • In-flight options are better with Max than the others, even if just marginally.
  • It’s expensive. If you don’t want or need 4K streaming and all the other benefits, it’s just not worth it.

Prepaid Unlimited OR Essentials: two great unlimited options for those on a budget

We have a tie! The best cheap unlimited plan depends on your family size. If you’re only getting one or two lines, we’d recommend Prepaid Unlimited. Why? For one, it costs the same, and yet it actually has a higher priority than the Essentials plan.

Let me explain.  T-Mobile gives all its plans and services a QCI (Quality of service class identifier). This identifier lets the network know where each plan stands in terms of priority. T-Mobile’s highest priority level is a QCI 6, while its lowest is a QCI 9. Interestingly, Essentials’ 50GB of priority data is actually classified as a 7, while Prepaid Unlimited has a value of 6. In other words, if you’re in a congested area, the Essentials customer will see deprioritization first.  On the downside, you’ll get weaker customer service, and you’ll have to pay upfront for your phones, as installment plans are only offered to postpaid customers.

The Essentials plan beats the Prepaid Unlimited plan for those with three or more lines. T-Mobile is currently running a discount that gives you a third line for free. This brings pricing for four lines down to $25 per line vs $35 on the prepaid service. You’ll also get device installment plans, better customer service, and other small perks. Neither comes with extras like Netflix or Apple TV, though. And remember in congested areas you’re not going to get prioritized the same way you would with Prepaid Unlimited.

  • Prepaid Unlimited: Higher priority than Essentials plan
  • Essentials: Device installment plans and better customer service than prepaid
  • Essentials: Cheaper for those with three or more lines, compared to prepaid
  • Both: It limits video streaming to standard definition (480p).
  • Both: No extras like Netflix or Apple TV.

The best T-Mobile plan for single users on a budget: T-Mobile Connect

The T-Mobile Connect plan is the most affordable option around. It keeps things simple with a starting price of $10 monthly for 1,000 minutes of talk, 1,000 texts, and just 1GB of data. If you want unlimited talk and text, you’ll pay $25 a month. That includes a respectable 6.5GB of data, perfect for those who regularly use data on the go, like listening to music in the car, watching YouTube while waiting in a line, and so on.

You can get even more data for $35 a month, which nets you 12GB. If you only have a single line, that’s still $15 cheaper than the most basic T-Mobile unlimited plan. Of course, you don’t get postpaid perks like device installment plans. You are also subject to the same weaker customer service that you’ll get with T-Mobile Prepaid Unlimited. Still, this is the cheapest way to experience T-Mobile service directly. It also has a priority rating of QCI 6 — which puts it above the postpaid Essentials plan.

  • It’s cheap!
  • You get higher prioritization than the budget Essentials plan
  • You only get so much data
  • Families will save more with another plan

T-Mobile vs the competition

Verizon logo on phone stock photo

If you’re here to switch carriers, you’re probably looking for a head-to-head showdown. We’ll stack T-Mobile against Verizon and AT&T to give you just the battle you’re looking for. Comparison shopping is the easiest way to decide on the right carrier. We’ll compare our favorite plans from the best unlimited data plans in the US to show you how each carrier stacks up.

As you can see, the top-tier plans follow similar pricing structures, and unlimited talk, text, and data are all standard. AT&T and Verizon are more specific with plan details and offer international texting in over 120 countries. T-Mobile’s plan is the most affordable of the three, regardless of having one line or four. AT&T and Verizon have also announced increased fees to offset inflation — a move that T-Mobile has yet to follow.

Obviously, there are many more plans from each carrier. If you’re looking to dive deeper, we recommend looking at our guides to the best Verizon plans and best AT&T plans . You can also see how they pit against T-Mobile directly in our T-Mobile vs Verizon and T-Mobile vs AT&T comparisons.

Best T-mobile phones

T-mobile keeps its pricing and options consistent regardless of whether you’re a prepaid or postpaid T-Mobile customer, though the latter will have financing options. If you go the prepaid route, you’ll have to pay for the full phone outright. With that in mind, pretty much every major flagship sold in the US can be found on T-Mobile. To make things as easy as possible, I’ve recommended three phones: a flagship, a mid-ranger, and a budget option. Keep in mind these aren’t necessarily the best phones available in each class (as that’s pretty subjective). Instead we made our selections based on pricing and promotions. These are the phones we feel are the best deals currently on T-Mobile.

Don’t like our picks? Check out T-Mobile’s phone section directly, or visit our best Android phones and best cheap phones guide to learn more about many of the great unlocked phones you can bring to T-Mobile. Of course, you can also unlock any T-Mobile phone if you want to jump to a new network.

Our recommended flagship: Galaxy S24 series

Galaxy S24 3

Samsung’s shiny Galaxy S24 devices sit at the top of this list of the best T-Mobile phones. The Galaxy S flagships have long offered a taste of just how good Android can be and the Galaxy S24 is even better than ever with new design and material changes for the Ultra and plenty of smaller but still meaningful improvements for the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus as well.

The phones are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, and all three can connect to T-Mobile’s 5G network. You also get an IP68 rating, wireless charging, and an in-display fingerprint scanner regardless of the three phones you go for. If you opt for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, you also get an S Pen and a 200MP primary camera.

Our recommended mid-ranger: Pixel 7a

google pixel 7a hero empty background

The Google Pixel 7a is easily one of the best midrange phones available right now. There are quite a few improvements to the Pixel 7a from its predecessor such as the move to a 90Hz display and the introduction of wireless charging, even if it’s fairly limited at just 7.5W speeds. The main camera is equally great thanks to a combination of Google’s AI trickery and the new 64MP sensor onboard.

As for raw power? The Pixel series doesn’t usually try to compete here but the Tensor G2 is still a fairly high-end chip for a budget device, largely thanks to its unique AI capabilities. Just be aware this phone can overheat during heavy use.

Our favorite budget option: Samsung Galaxy A23 5G

samsung galaxy a23 back upright

If you’re on a budget and don’t demand a lot from your phone, the Galaxy A23 5G might be up your alley. Its specs won’t blow your socks off, but the handset still has more than enough power for everyday tasks like browsing the web, watching videos, and checking social media at 5G speeds.

The device’s screen is quite large, coming in at 6.6 inches with a Full HD+ resolution. Four cameras at the back get the job done, just don’t expect the world from them — especially in low-light situations. Other specs and features include up to 128GB of storage, a 5,000mAh battery, and Android 12 with Samsung’s One UI 4.1 on top.

The phone is also equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, supports expandable storage, and has a headphone jack.

Want T-Mobile’s service on a budget?

mint mobile sim

You don’t have to sign up for T-Mobile to get access to the T-Mobile network. Check out the table below for a few of our favorite alternatives to T-Mobile that still use the same reliable network.

Google Fi Wireless

Google’s carrier is an excellent fit if you plan to pay per gig or expect to go abroad often. With monthly bill limits, you’ll never pay past a certain point, even if you use mountains of data. Thanks to Google Fi’s reliance on multiple networks, you can always get the best signal available — even abroad. Now, you can choose from two unlimited plans to save money without sacrificing access.

Metro by T-Mobile

We’ve already mentioned Metro as a T-Mobile prepaid alternative, but its perks and plans make the MVNO a solid choice no matter your needs. If you opt for unlimited service, you’ll be rewarded with 15GB of hotspot included as well as Google One and Amazon Prime memberships. Unfortunately, you’ll have to head into a Metro store to sign up for most services.

Mint Mobile

Mint Mobile , the carrier owned by Ryan Reynolds, is an affordable alternative for service if you want to save some money. Plans range from 4GB to unlimited, and you’ll never pay more than $35 per month for one line of service. You may not get much by way of extra perks, but if you sign up for multi-month plans, you’ll save even more money.

Straight Talk

One of the easiest MVNOs to sign up for, Straight Talk, is available at most Walmart locations and actually supports most of the primary carriers. You can go for a limited talk option with just a little bit of data or spend more for unlimited service. Affordability is critical, so you’ll pay a bit extra for bonus features like international access, but Straight Talk is an easy way to grab the basics.

If you want a plan that’s perfectly tailored to your needs, US Mobile is the way to go. You can choose your ideal level of talk, text, and data for as little as $5 per month or go unlimited for $40. 5G access will cost you a little extra, but it’s nice to know that it’s available. When you add multiple lines of unlimited, you’ll get the chance to add subscription services like Disney Plus, Spotify, and PlayStation Plus.

Does T-Mobile offer any special discounts?

T-Mobile offers special discounts if you’re in the military, a first responder, or over the age of 55. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Unlimited 55 is for those 55 and older. This discount applies to Essentials, Magenta, Magenta Max, and the new Go5G plans. The exact discount will vary. As an example, two lines of Essentials 55 will run you $37.50 a piece versus $40 for each line on the standard Essentials plan.
  • Military discounts apply to Magenta and Go5G plans. You’ll get military discounts on any of the plans under these umbrellas. The exact discount will vary. For example, you’ll pay $100 for four lines of Magenta. That would cost you $160 normally, so the discount is pretty substantial. Keep in mind only one member has to be active military to qualify.
  • First responder plans apply to Magenta and Go5G plans. As long as one member of your family is a first responder, everyone will get the discounts here. The exact savings vary, just like with the other options above. Actual discounted rates are the same as the military discount.

Frequently asked questions

The least expensive T-mobile plan is the prepaid Connect option. You’ll get 1000 minutes, 1,500 texts, and 1GB of data for just $10 a month.

Yes, as long as it’s unlocked. If you’re switching from another carrier you’ll want to make sure the phone can be unlocked and is compatible with T-Mobile’s network.

This question used to be a lot easier to answer before the Sprint and T-Mobile merger. Deutsche Telekom is still the majority owner of the new T-Mobile, controlling around 43%. Softbank is the second-largest controlling part, with roughly a 24% cut. Outside shareholders hold the rest of the shares.

You can unlock your T-Mobile phone for use with another network as long as you meet specific requirements, including an account in good standing, a fully paid device active on the network for at least 40 days for post-paid accounts, and a few other hoops for prepaid. For more specific instructions, head over to T-Mobile .

Technically, T-Mobile supports GSM alongside its LTE and 5G standards.

Yes. You can use data to your heart’s content and still get prioritized above other customers. That’s the advantage of paying a premium, we suppose.

Most likely, yes. While Verizon is a CMDA carrier and T-Mobile runs on GSM, the former’s devices are typically designed with all the necessary GSM bands (for use while traveling, etc.). Be sure to check out the specific Verizon phone in question and make sure it can run on the same bands required by T-Mobile in your area.

Obviously, the answer to this varies on what you’re looking for and where in the US you live. That said, don’t assume it won’t work well if you tried T-Mobile years ago and found it wasn’t powerful in your area. Years ago, T-Mobile was best suited for urban areas, but with changes to its network (including the purchase of Sprint), this is no longer the case. Consult T-Mobile’s coverage map for more details .

Yes, T-Mobile supports Wi-Fi calling on its network.

Get the 5G data you need without wasting cash on features you don't

The best T-Mobile phone plans give you access to the carrier’s massive 5G network with enough data to actually use it, while avoiding paying for features you don’t need.

T-Mobile’s plans, for the most part, offer unlimited data with access to all of the carrier’s 5G bands with differences coming down mainly to premium data, hotspot data, and plan extras. If you’re not careful, it’s easy to end up paying for a lot of extras you never use while trying to get the data you do.

If you’ve been looking at all of the best cell phone plans available, there are plenty of carriers using the T-Mobile network, but if you want T-Mobile’s best speeds and highest priority data, you’ll want one of the carrier’s postpaid plans, so you can use one of the best T-Mobile phones with all the speed and data you need.

T-Mobile Go5G

Tons of data with multi-line savings

Go5G is T-Mobile’s sensible middle child with plenty of data for the vast majority of users, data for when you travel, and high-quality streaming at 720p resolution. Taxes and fees are included, and with multi-line discounts, this plan is one of T-Mobile’s most competitive.

  • Plenty of premium data for most at 100GB
  • Up to 720p streaming for videos
  • Taxes and fees are included
  • Videos stream at 480p by default
  • No phone upgrade perks
  • ScamShield Premium not included

Unlimited data plans offer some peace of mind in that they’re not going to suddenly leave you stranded without a connection, but the fact of the matter is that most of us don’t need all that much data. For even a relatively heavy user, T-Mobile’s Go5G plan with 100GB premium data, and unlimited data at a slightly lower priority after that, is plenty. You get 5G speeds as fast as T-Mobile can deliver them for the first 100GB of usage each month, and if you manage to use it all, you still get solid 5G speeds with more variation depending on how crowded the network is.

Besides that, the plan comes with 15GB of high-speed hotspot data so you can stream and download on your laptop or tablet without paying for another plan. This isn’t a ton of data, but if you spend most of your time on your home Wi-Fi connection, it can be plenty to keep you connected on the go. Not only that, but after that 15GB of high-speed data is used, you still get unlimited 3G speeds which is enough for messaging, light browsing, and email.

Taxes and fees are included with this plan, so the price you see is the price you pay, which is a breath of fresh air on a postpaid plan. There’s also a $5 autopay discount bringing the price down to $75 for a single line. The best way to save is to bring as many lines as possible, with T-Mobile offering the third line free for new customers. If you bring two or three lines, Go5G comes in at $130 per month, with four lines costing $155 per month.

Plenty of domestic data for most

T-Mobile’s cheapest postpaid plan is called Essentials Saver and it’s a strong value for customers with one or two lines. You get a solid 50GB of premium data and even 3G-speed hotspot usage. Video stream quality takes a cut to SD quality, but for many people, this is a worthwhile sacrifice on a phone screen.

  • Solid 50GB of premium data
  • Cheap pricing for one or two lines
  • Full 5G access
  • Taxes and fees not includes
  • Video streaming quality low at SD
  • Not a great deal for families with three or more lines

T-Mobile’s Essentials Saver plan is its cheapest for one or two lines, but it still comes with a respectable 50GB of premium 5G data and 3G-speed hotspot data. That 50GB of data seems a lot lower than the other plans at T-Mobile, but this is one of this plan’s most minor sacrifices in real-world usage since quite a few people don’t need that much data at all, and your home Wi-Fi usage doesn’t count towards your data usage. One thing to note is that, unlike Verizon and AT&T, all T-Mobile customers get access to the full 5G network including low-band, mid-band, and high-band spectrum.

This plan lacks nearly all international features except for the ability to text international numbers from home. Videos stream at SD resolutions, which will look a bit blurry on a large phone screen but won’t bother many people.

Keep in mind that this plan doesn’t include taxes and fees, you’ll be looking at a few more dollars per month on top of the sticker price. It’s also worth noting that these fees could increase, and you’re responsible for the difference. Still, there’s an autopay discount which brings the price down to $50 per month for a single line and $80 for two lines. If you’re bringing three or more lines, however, the standard Essentials plans start to make more sense.

Save even more with multiple lines

If you’re bringing three or more lines to T-Mobile and want the cheapest data you can get, T-Mobile’s Essential plan is the best bet. It gets 50GB of premium data, 3G-speed hotspot data, and even a few international features like usage in Mexico and Canada.

  • Low price for multi-line accounts
  • Taxes and fees not included

If you’re considering the cheap Essentials Saver plan but have more than a couple of lines, the standard Essentials plan makes more sense. While pricier at one or two lines for not a lot more, thanks to a third-line free promotion and special four-line pricing for four to six lines, it’s the better deal for families. Compared to the above Essential Saver plan, you get a handful of flat-rate international options added in but, most importantly, four lines come in at just $100 per month with five lines at $125.

This plan still has 50GB of premium data with unlimited 3G-speed hotspot data. Video streams are still unimpressive at SD quality, but fine enough for the kids watching 12 hours of Roblox videos on a road trip. While both Essentials and Essentials Saver can send international texts for free, Essentials comes with usage in Mexico and Canada, and Simple Global flat-rate international calling and testing.

Upgrade your phone every year

If you like upgrading your phone with the latest model every single year, T-Mobiles Go5G Next is a good plan for you. With this plan, you’re upgrade-ready every year and will have access to the same offers as new customers. If you upgrade every year, this plan could be worth the premium price.

  • Upgrade-ready every year with full discounts
  • Unlimited premium data
  • Apple TV+, Netflix, and Hulu are included
  • Very expensive
  • Hotspot data is lower than premium plans from other carriers

T-Mobile’s top premium plan for heavy users is called Go5G Next and it comes with unlimited premium data, but only really makes sense for those who want to always be using the latest tech. Go5G Next’s main feature is being upgrade-ready every single year compared to the typical two and three-year payment plan cycles on most other plans. Besides that, T-Mobile also gives customers on this plan the same phone offers as new customers, so they can take advantage of deals like buy one get one free credits.

Besides the phone upgrades, Go5G Next has all of T-Mobile’s best features including unlimited premium 5G data, 50GB of hotspot data, and taxes and fees included. While the 50GB of hotspot data is ample for most people, it’s worth mentioning that Verizon and AT&T’s top plans offer 60GB of hotspot data. Luckily, on-phone usage is basically unrestricted with unlimited premium 5G data and 4K streaming video quality. If you’re traveling internationally, you get 5GB of high-speed data in another country and in-flight Wi-Fi on the way there on equipped plans from Alaskan Airlines, American, Delta, and United.

Taxes and fees are included on this plan, which is a nice touch given its price, which starts at $100 for a single line, going up to $170 for two lines, $180 for three lines, and $225 for four lines. There’s also a $35 activation fee when you upgrade your phone, so some extra money will need to come out of pocket. That being said, Apple TV+, Netflix, and Hulu are all included in the price, so at least you’ll have plenty to stream as soon as you finish setting up your new phone .

Don't forget your 55+ discount

Most T-Mobile plans are available at a discount for seniors, but the older Magenta plan still offers the most compelling package with 100GB of premium data, 5GB of hotspot data, and a handful of streaming perks.

  • Plenty of data with 100GB of premium data
  • Unlimited international usage with 5GB of high-speed data
  • Available with up to four lines
  • Videos stream at 480p
  • Only 5GB of hotspot data

If you’ve just turned 55, you’re not old yet, but that doesn’t mean you need to turn down discounts. The Magenta 55+ plan is a solid deal for seniors who still want high-speed data and have up to four lines to bring to their account. Based on T-Mobile's older, and still available, Magenta plan, you get 100GB of premium data, 5GB of high-speed hotspot data, and taxes and fees are included. Videos are limited to SD quality, which isn’t too big of a deal for someone with reading glasses.

Netflix with ads is included for free, so you can stream shows at home or on your phone. Six months of Apple TV+ is also included, which is plenty of time to binge-watch a few shows. If you fly somewhere, you get four full in-flight Wi-Fi settings on supported planes at Alaskan, American, Delta, and United flights. Once abroad, you get unlimited usage with 5GB of high-speed data in a handful of countries including Canada and Mexico with 256Kbps speeds in 210+ other countries.

T-Mobile offers a 55+ version of most of its plans, but Magenta still offers some of its best value, especially if you have two or more lines. Unlike some other carriers, T-Mobile allows up to four lines on its Magenta and higher 55+ plans, so you can still save with your family or friends. With four lines, Magenta 55+ comes in at $20 less than Magenta, so it’s worth taking advantage of this discount.

Streaming services included

If you watch a lot of streaming video, you need a plan that can keep up with high-quality video, and enough premium data to keep it locked at HD resolutions. This plan also comes with Apple TV+ and Netflix included so you’re ready to stream right off the bat.

  • Video streaming at 4K resolutions
  • Apple TV+ and Netflix are included
  • Phone upgrades every two years
  • Hulu isn't included
  • Quite expensive for one line

If most of the videos you stream are in an app on your phone, you want a plan with plenty of streaming perks and a phone that can handle it. Go5G Plus isn’t T-Mobile’s top plan, but it isn’t far off with unlimited premium data and 50GB of high-speed hotspot data. It comes with Netflix Standard with ads, and Apple TV+, so you’ve got two apps full of shows ready to stream as soon as you get set up. With up to 4K video streaming supported on the plan, you’ll be able to get the most out of these streaming apps on your phone’s screen.

Like Go5G Next, you also get the same phone offers as new customers and you’re upgrade-ready in two years. If you choose one of the best Android phones , you can easily get two good years out of it without significant slowdown. With Go5G Plus, you can be sure you have a phone with the latest features and full support for the 5G network.

Go5G Plus costs $90 per month for a single line with autopay discounts. For two and three lines, it costs $150 per month thanks to a promotion making the third line free. Finally, four lines bring it to $185 per month. Keep in mind that if you get a new phone and take advantage of the biannual upgrade, you’ll pay a $35 activation fee with the new phone.

Make the most of T-Mobile 5G with the right plan

T-Mobile is one of the best overall carriers thanks to its massive 5G network allowing it to be competitive on data and coverage. It’s not perfect, with activation fees for new phones, which felt out of favor even when Sprint was still around, but as a one-time fee for phone upgrades, it’s tolerable.

One thing T-Mobile excels at is discounts for military members and veterans, first responders, and 55+ customers. If you’re in the military, a veteran, or first responder, the top pick, Go5G, is $15 cheaper for a single line and $35 cheaper if you’ve got four lines. If you qualify, thank you — and this is definitely a discount you should remember to activate. When it comes to 55+ plans, be sure to make sure the 55+ version is the cheapest before signing up. For example, Go5G 55 is $5 more than Go5G with four lines thanks to the current promotion.

Overall, the best plan for most people is the Go5G plan. This plan comes with 100GB of premium data, which the vast majority of users won’t fully use, and unlimited data after that. Video streaming quality gets a bump to 720p, which should offer plenty of clarity on a phone screen. It comes with 10GB of high-speed data if you go to Mexico or Canada, so you don’t need to worry about getting another SIM if you go on vacation. With multi-line discounts and the third-line free promotions, Go5G can be the perfect choice.

Go5G is T-Mobile’s sensible middle child with plenty of data for the vast majority of users, data for when you travel, and high-quality streaming at 720p resolutions. Taxes and fees are included, and with multi-line discounts, this plan is one of T-Mobile’s most competitive.

IRS begins audits of corporate jet usage; part of larger effort to ensure high-income groups don’t fly under the radar on tax responsibilities

IR-2024-46, Feb. 21, 2024

WASHINGTON — Using Inflation Reduction Act funding and as part of ongoing efforts to improve tax compliance in high-income categories, the Internal Revenue Service announced today plans to begin dozens of audits on business aircraft involving personal use.

The audits will be focused on aircraft usage by large corporations, large partnerships and high-income taxpayers and whether for tax purposes the use of jets is being properly allocated between business and personal reasons.

The IRS will be using advanced analytics and resources from the Inflation Reduction Act to more closely examine this area, which has not been closely scrutinized during the past decade as agency resources fell sharply. The number of audits related to aircraft usage could increase in the future following initial results and as the IRS continues hiring additional examiners.

“During tax season, millions of people are doing the right thing by filing and paying their taxes, and they should have confidence that everyone is also following the law,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “Personal use of corporate jets and other aircraft by executives and others have tax implications, and it’s a complex area where IRS work has been stretched thin. With expanded resources, IRS work in this area will take off. These aircraft audits will help ensure high-income groups aren’t flying under the radar with their tax responsibilities.”

Business aircraft are often used for both business and personal reasons by officers, executives, other employees, shareholders and partners. In general, the tax code passed by Congress allows a business deduction for expenses of maintaining an asset, such as a corporate jet, if that asset is utilized for a business purpose. However, the use of a company aircraft must be allocated between business use and personal use. This is a complex area of tax law, and record-keeping can be challenging.

For someone such as an executive using the company jet for personal travel, the amount of personal usage impacts eligibility for certain business deductions. Use of the company jet for personal travel typically results in income inclusion by the individual using the jet for personal travel and could also impact the business’s eligibility to deduct costs related to the personal travel.

The examination of corporate jet usage is part of the IRS Large Business and International division’s “campaign” program. Campaigns apply different compliance streams to help address areas with a high risk of non-compliance. These efforts include issue-focused examinations, taxpayer outreach and education, tax form changes and focusing on particular issues that present a high risk of noncompliance.

The IRS will begin conducting examinations in the near future as part of the agency’s commitment to ensuring fairness in tax administration.

This is part of a larger effort  the IRS is taking to ensure large corporate, large partnerships and high-income individual filers pay the taxes they owe. Prior to the Inflation Reduction Act, more than a decade of budget cuts prevented the IRS from keeping pace with the increasingly complicated set of tools that the wealthiest taxpayers use to shelter or manipulate their income to avoid taxes. The IRS is now taking swift and aggressive action to close this gap.

In addition to work on corporate jets, the IRS has a variety of efforts underway to improve tax compliance in complex, overlooked high-dollar areas where the agency did not have adequate resources prior to Inflation Reduction Act funding.

For example, the IRS is continuing to pursue millionaires that have not paid hundreds of millions of dollars in tax debt. The IRS has already collected $482 million in ongoing efforts to recoup taxes owed by 1,600 millionaires with action continuing in this area. Elsewhere, the IRS is pursuing multi-million-dollar partnership balance sheet discrepancies, ramping up audits of more than 75 of the largest partnerships using artificial intelligence (AI) as well as other areas .

"The IRS continues to increase scrutiny on high-income taxpayers as we work to reverse the historic low audit rates and limited focus that the wealthiest individuals and organizations faced in the years that predated the Inflation Reduction Act,” Werfel said. “We are adding staff and technology to ensure that the taxpayers with the highest income, including partnerships, large corporations and millionaires and billionaires, pay what is legally owed under federal law. The IRS will have more announcements to make in this important area."

AT&T says cell service fully restored after major outage disrupts its mobile network

Customer reports of at&t wireless outages peaked at over 73,000 around 8:15 a.m. texas cities were particularly hard hit..

The cellular outage hit all carriers, but especially Dallas-based AT&T.

By Lana Ferguson , Maria Halkias and Irving Mejia-Hilario

7:09 AM on Feb 22, 2024 CST — Updated at 8:50 AM on Feb 22, 2024 CST

Sitting outside AT&T’s Dallas headquarters in the company’s signature Discovery District, small business owner Roxie Reese had a moment to reflect on the disruptive morning she and thousands of other wireless customers nationwide awoke to Thursday.

Reese had a morning appointment and grabbed her cellphone in a rush.

“I didn’t realize until after I left my house that I had no service,” said Reese, owner and founder of DFW Lash University. “I made it to my destination but I didn’t know where I was going. So it made me run behind. It’s a reminder that phones are a resource I take for granted because when it’s not available, it definitely makes life harder.”

Shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, AT&T said it had fully restored wireless service to all customers, including the critical FirstNet network used by emergency services nationally. The FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security were reported to be investigating why wireless subscribers lost service.

“Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future,” the telecommunications giant said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News .

Reports of outages to AT&T’s mobile service started around 2 a.m. and meant many Americans were unable to place calls, send texts or access the internet when they awoke. By 8:15 a.m. Dallas time, over 73,000 AT&T customers in major cities like Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago had reported cellular outages to Downdetector.com , a website that tracks service problems by users.

In all, AT&T customers filed over 1.5 million outage reports on Downdetector.

The problem even cascaded to other cellular carriers whose customers were believed to be trying to reach AT&T users.

AT&T did not provide a reason for the system failure.

At the White House, national security spokesman John Kirby played down the possibility of a cyberattack.

”Right now, we’re being told that AT&T has no reason to think that this was a cybersecurity incident,” he told reporters at midday. “But … we won’t know until an investigation has been completed. It’s good that the vast majority of customers have had their service restored. Obviously, we’ve got to do spade work to figure out what happened.”

Bloomberg reported the federal government is investigating whether the outage was caused by a cyberattack, citing two anonymous U.S. officials familiar with the situation.

Kristen Hanich, director of research at Addison-based research firm Parks Associates, said any number of potential issues could have been the cause.

“It could be anything from authentication issues to hardware failure or cloud configuration errors or cyber or other reasons,” she said. “Time will tell, and we are closely monitoring the story.”

Texas cities appeared to be particularly hard hit.

AT&T is the dominant wireless carrier in Texas, with 34% of the market, according to Parks Associates. Nationally, AT&T ranks third behind Verizon and T-Mobile with a 22% market share. It has about 87 million wireless subscribers.

Besides the consumer impact, AT&T’s emergency response network, FirstNet, also suffered disruptions. CNN reported AT&T’s network had seen sporadic outages over the previous few days, including a temporary 911 outage in some parts of the southeastern U.S. Several local governments around the U.S. said Thursday’s outage disrupted services.

San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management said in a statement on X , Thursday morning its 911 center remained operational but that many AT&T customers were unable to reach the emergency line because of the outages. It suggested people call from a landline or find someone with a rival’s service to dial 911.

The outage didn’t have a major impact on North Texas police departments.

“The Dallas Police Department is aware of the reported outage and is monitoring the situation,” the department said in a statement. “The department has not been impacted by the reported outage.”

The department’s 911 communications and other systems were functional, the statement said.

Fort Worth police said on X that its 911 call center also wasn’t affected

“We are still available for your emergency needs,” its post said.

Frisco police advised residents that even if a cellphone is showing SOS, it should still be able to call 911.

A nationwide service outage affecting multiple cell phone providers appears to be slowly resolving. Those with phones still showing SOS should be able to reach 9-1-1 if needed. Matt Zavadsky, a spokesperson with MedStar, which provides emergency medical services to Fort Worth and surrounding areas, said the organization’s FirstNet system “became intermittent/non-functional” about 2:30 a.m. That caused MedStar to lose the ability to see its units on its computer system and it couldn’t use automated navigation to calls.

During that time, MedStar used radio dispatching and map books in the ambulances instead.

Other major entities in North Texas and across the state reported normal operations Thursday. ERCOT spokeswoman Trudi Webster said the state’s electric grid was operating normally.

DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field also saw no impact. Autonomous trucking companies Aurora and Kodiak and public hospital system, Parkland Health, reported no disruptions as well.

Some retailers seemingly anticipated such a problem.

H-E-B spokeswoman Mabrie Jackson said the popular grocery store’s point of sales systems don’t depend on WiFi, but store employees were sent outside to curbside pickup spaces to help customers whose cell phones were inoperable.

Other carriers besides AT&T were affected. Cricket Wireless had over 11,000 outages, Downdetector.com reported. Verizon had about 3,000 outages and T-Mobile more than 1,000. Boost Mobile had about 450 outages.

Verizon and T-Mobile both reported their users encountered difficulties trying to connect with customers on affected networks.

“We did not experience an outage,” T-Mobile said in a statement. “Our network is operating normally.”

User reports on Downdetector about a T-Mobile outage, the company added, “is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks.”

Verizon said it also was unaffected.

“Verizon’s network is operating normally,” Verizon told CNN in a statement. “Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier. We are continuing to monitor the situation.”

Previous outages

It’s not the first time AT&T has suffered a widespread outage. In 2008, the company dealt with an extensive wireless internet failure in the U.S. Northeast. In that incident, a glitch in the way the company’s network was routing traffic was identified as the culprit and the service failure was relatively short-lived.

In 2020, AT&T internet and phone service was knocked out in Nashville by an explosion in the city’s downtown area.

T-Mobile also has been hit with widespread outages, including one last February and one in 2020 that prompted the FCC to launch an investigation.

“In my experience, this type of outage can negatively impact financial results in the quarter in which it occurs and cause short-term lost goodwill with customers,” David Heger, an analyst at Edward D. Jones & Co., said in an email. “However, it does not have a longer term impact on the business.”

Bloomberg Intelligence analysts John Butler and Hunter Sacco wrote in a note that AT&T could take a reputational hit from the outage. “... Network reliability likely plays a big role in customers’ choice of a provider,” they wrote.

AT&T Says Service Is Restored After Widespread Cellular Outage

White House officials said the incident was under investigation, but it did not appear to be a cyberattack. Verizon and T-Mobile said their networks were operating normally.

Jenny Gross reported from London and David McCabe reported from Washington.

AT&T said on Thursday that it had fully restored service to its wireless network after a widespread outage temporarily cut off connections for users across the United States for many hours, the cause of which was still under investigation.

The outage, which affected people in cities including Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York, was first reported around 3:30 a.m. Eastern time, according to Downdetector.com , which tracks user reports of telecommunication and internet disruptions. At its peak, the site listed around 70,000 reports of disrupted service for the wireless carrier.

Multiple government agencies said they were looking into the incident, although the Biden administration told reporters that AT&T said there was no reason to think it was a cyberattack.

AT&T did not disclose the scope of the outage, nor the reason for it. When the outage first began on Thursday morning, the company listed the cause as “maintenance activity.”

Jim Greer, an AT&T spokesman, apologized in a statement confirming service was restored and said the company was “taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future.”

The outage underscored the importance of connectivity to daily life as individuals and businesses were cut off from communications and the ability to use mobile apps. AT&T advised consumers they could make calls over Wi-Fi and sought to respond to angry customers online. Many phones showed an “SOS” symbol on their screen, signaling they could only make emergency calls, while local governments offered alternate ways to reach 911.

Reports of outages on Downdetector began to fall midmorning, and at one point AT&T’s website showed that outages were limited to users in California , though users in other states were still reporting issues. Cricket, which is owned by AT&T, also reported that its users were experiencing wireless service interruptions and said it was working to restore service.

Reports also surfaced early Thursday that FirstNet, the network AT&T maintains for emergency services personnel, had experienced outages, but AT&T said around 10:30 a.m. that the network was fully operational.

Verizon experienced 3,000 reports of outages at one point on Thursday and T-Mobile about half that. Both companies said in statements that their networks were operating normally.

“Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier,” Verizon said. “We are continuing to monitor the situation.”

In an email, T-Mobile said that it did not experience an outage. “Downdetector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks.”

Officials in Washington said they were working to understand the cause of the outage. A spokesman for the Federal Communications Commission said its inquiry was being handled by its Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, which was in touch with AT&T as well as other providers.

John Kirby, a National Security Council spokesman, said on a call with reporters on Thursday that the Biden administration was told “that AT&T has no reason to think this was a cybersecurity incident,” although he added that they would not be certain until an investigation had been completed.

Mr. Kirby said that, in addition to the F.C.C., the Department of Homeland Security and the F.B.I. were collaborating with technology companies to investigate the outage.

The F.B.I. said in a statement it was in touch with AT&T and would respond accordingly if any malicious activity was found.

Throughout the day, cities urged residents to find alternate ways of reaching emergency or municipal services, like landlines or phones connected to Wi-Fi. The City of Upper Arlington, Ohio , said the fire department might not be notified of fire alarms because of the outage. It urged that any fire alarm be followed up with a 911 call.

The San Francisco Fire Department said on social media that it was aware of an issue affecting AT&T users who were trying to call 911. “We are actively engaged and monitoring this,” the fire department said. “If you are an AT&T customer and cannot get through to 911, then please try calling from a landline.”

The Massachusetts State Police said on social media on Thursday morning that 911 call centers across the state had been flooded with calls from people checking to see if the emergency service worked from their phones. “Please do not do this,” the police said. “If you can successfully place a non-emergency call to another number via your cell service then your 911 service will also work.”

Even in less extreme circumstances, the outage complicated the many elements of life that have come to rely on a reliable connection to the internet.

Staff at the First Watch restaurant in Dania Beach, Fla., had to turn away breakfast customers for a time while the outage prevented them from processing payments.

Debra Maddow, who lives in southwest Houston, said that she first noticed something was off after 7 a.m., when she went to check traffic and Google Maps was offline. Later, she visited a Starbucks to make an urgent call through its free Wi-Fi, she said.

“I’m really frustrated that they’re not telling us anything,” Ms. Maddow said in a phone interview over Wi-Fi. She said she tried to call AT&T for an update, but after a long time on hold, the call was dropped.

Victor Mather , John Keefe , Zolan Kanno-Youngs and Adam Goldman contributed reporting.
