United Airlines Review – Seats, Amenities, Customer Service, Baggage Fees, & More

United Ticketing Options

United frequent flyer program, baggage fees, united’s other fees & add-ons, how to avoid paying excess fees & travel expenses, united inflight amenities, most common complaints, consumer rankings, ratings, etc. , safety and performance, charity partnership, final thoughts.

There’s no doubt you know United Airlines (and may have even flown with them before), but are you aware of their different fare types, the ins and outs of their baggage allowances, and all of their extra fees/add-ons? What about their seat specs and their consumer satisfaction ratings?

This helpful guide covers all you need to know about this large U.S. carrier so you hopefully won’t be caught unaware on your next flight.

In this post you’ll find a general company overview, ticketing/fare options, extra fees/add-ons (including baggage allowances ), cabin class amenities, seat specs, and more.

United Airlines Route Map

United’s fare types are pretty standard for a large U.S. carrier. But with stiff competition from lots of low-cost airlines, United recently introduced a Basic Economy fare — which pretty much just gets you a seat on the plane.

Handy for those traveling light, this reduced and restricted fare does not include any standard carry-on or checked luggage.

And for anyone part of United’s frequent flyer program (covered later on in this article), you won’t be eligible for premier qualifying miles that go toward your elite status when flying in this class.

Below are the additional differences in fare types and cabin classes, with inflight amenities covered later on in this article:

Basic Economy (most restrictive fare):

  • Pre-assigned seat before boarding
  • Family or group seating not possible
  • First checked bag costs an additional $120 (round-trip)
  • Upgrades not available
  • Changes or refunds not permitted

Economy (standard):

  • Seat selection at time of booking (if available)
  • Customize your booking with other options

Economy (flexible):

  • Refundable ticket (subject to cancellation fees)

Premium Plus:

  • Spacious, larger seating with extra legroom
  • Complimentary food and beverage
  • Enhanced dining with complimentary food and beverage

The availability of certain cabin classes is dependent on the route and plane type. We’ve also covered how you can upgrade to business or first class on United Airlines .

Economy Plus

If you’re looking for a little extra legroom, you can upgrade your booking to Economy Plus. This will also seat you closer to the front of the aircraft so you can disembark quicker.

You can upgrade as a one-off, or subscribe to yearly upgrades when booking a regular economy ticket (where Economy Plus is available).

United Airlines MileagePlus

MileagePlus is United’s frequent flyer loyalty program where you can earn miles to redeem against reward flights and work your way up membership tiers to gain elite benefits, such as priority check-in and additional luggage.

These reward miles can also be used against flights with other Star Alliance members. You can earn miles through flying, shopping, dining out, and spending on certain credit cards.

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our article on United’s MileagePlus frequent flyer program .

Hot Tip: Check out our post on United Airlines’ boarding policy so you’ll know what to expect from the boarding process as almost all airlines have a different procedure!

United Customer Satisfaction

Customer satisfaction is a real mixed bag with United Airlines. Their social media channels and Tripadvisor reviews seem to attract many compliments from loyal customers, which is unusual as these outlets are often utilized to rant and rave about poor service!

Additionally, their PR team is pretty genius, sponsoring a number of great causes and shouting about their good deeds on social media — so even if the service was only mediocre for a customer, their philanthropic ways may improve consumer brand impression.

Lost baggage is a real gripe for United customers, being one of the most prominent issues on review sites. Also, inconsistencies of aircraft age can lead to disappointment in inflight amenities.

One customer complaint we found said they had experienced a seat-back entertainment system on once international flight and not on another. That’s going to disappoint any traveler.

United prides itself on their personal device entertainment, but this does rely on the customer having a smartphone/tablet at their disposal.

United Airlines had 1,169 complaints lodged against them from January-September 2018 according to the  September 2018 Air Travel Consumer Report . The chart below represents the complaints by category.

  • Flight problems (cancellation, delay, or misconnection): 292
  • Baggage: 185
  • Customer service: 174
  • Reservation, ticketing, boarding: 110
  • Disability : 86
  • Refunds: 45
  • Oversales: 34
  • Discrimination: 8
  • Advertising: 5

There are a number of different review websites out there when it comes to airline ratings. Here are a few of the most popular so you can see the general consumer opinion for United Airlines.

Skytrax Ranking: 3 Star Airline (out of 5)

Skytrax Customer Rating:  3/10 (average from 2,594 reviews)

United Airlines Skytrax

TripAdvisor Airline Review Rating:  3/5 (average from 36,791 reviews)

Kayak Customer Rating: 7/10 (average from 61,414 reviews)

AirHelp.com Overall Rating: 7.59/10 (departure/arrival performance, service, and satisfaction of claims processing)

Airlineratings.com Safety Rating :  7/7 (takes into consideration whether the airline has an IATA Operational Safety Audit Certification, government and crash records, plus information from the World’s Aviation Governing Body).

United Airlines Charities

United Airlines supports numerous charities across their main hub locations and across the globe. It strives to be a more sustainable airline supporting environmental charities and operations such as Clean the World and Conservation International.

United also supports many youth projects, including Youth Guidance with the goal of inspiring future leaders.

Overall, customer satisfaction seems to be somewhere in the middle for United — and as with other legacy U.S. carriers, there will always be a place for the airline with reasonable fares and route availability.

United will never have the sass and style of Virgin Atlantic or the service and luxury of the Middle Eastern airlines, but it serves its purpose and does have a loyal customer base (although this may be dwindling slightly, with many referencing the “good old days” when United was great).

Their current focus seems to be on revamping their premium cabins, with their Polaris offering in business and first — but we’re hoping they don’t neglect economy for too much longer either.

Traveling on United Airlines and wondering about the size of their seats and seatbelts? You’re in the right place.

The airline offers seating options to cater to the needs of different passengers, and understanding their seat dimensions and seatbelt lengths will help you enjoy a more comfortable flying experience.

United Airlines has a variety of aircraft in its fleet, which affects both the size of seats and seatbelts offered.

The standard seats in economy class on United Airlines planes are typically between 16.1 and 17 inches wide. Seatbelts on United are 31 inches long, and extenders are available for those who need them.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

How Big are United Airlines Seats and Seatbelts

  • United Airlines seats in economy class are typically 16.1 to 17 inches wide.
  • Seatbelts on United Airlines planes are 31 inches long.
  • Extenders are available on United flights for those who require additional seatbelt length.

Understanding the Anatomy of United Airlines Seats

When it comes to comfort on United Airlines, the type of aircraft you’re flying on plays a significant role. Each aircraft’s seat size and specifications vary, affecting seat widths and legroom.

Seat width depends on the seat type and aircraft. For example, Basic Economy and Economy seats are usually located at the back or middle of the plane. Preferred seating, offering a bit more legroom, can typically be found in the front of the Economy cabin.

In general, United Airlines offers a range of seat types to suit your travel preferences.

From extra legroom in United Polaris® fully reclining seats to standard seating, you can choose what works best for you. Keep in mind that seat selection may come at an additional cost, especially for Basic Economy passengers.

Regarding seatbelts, although specific dimensions might not be clearly stated, a discussion on FlyerTalk suggests that the seatbelts, along with the seat’s anchor points, could provide approximately 48 inches of space. However, this number may vary depending on the aircraft and seat type.

By familiarizing yourself with the anatomy of United Airlines seats, you can make a well-informed decision when selecting your seat.

Ultimately, this knowledge will enable you to have a more comfortable and enjoyable flight experience.

Find out – Is United a Good Airline?

The Hierarchical Breakdown of United’s Seating Classes

When you book a flight with United Airlines, there are various seating options available to cater to your preferences.

Here is a brief breakdown of the different classes that United offers:

  • Basic Economy : This is a budget-friendly option designed for travelers who prioritize lower costs over seat amenities. With a Basic Economy ticket, you’ll still be able to enjoy a comfortable seat but with limited legroom.
  • Economy : A step up from Basic Economy, the standard Economy class offers more legroom and the option to select your seat, enhancing your overall travel experience. It’s a popular choice for leisure and short-haul flights.
  • Economy Plus : If you’re looking for extra comfort, Economy Plus provides an upgrade from standard Economy with more legroom, broader seating, and greater recline. These seats are located at the front of the economy cabin, offering up to 37 inches of legroom.
  • Premium Economy : This class is designed to give you the best of both worlds by combining elements of both Economy and Business classes. With a Premium Economy ticket, you can expect more expansive seats, extended legroom, priority boarding, and an enhanced dining experience.
  • Business Class : For the ultimate in comfort during your flight, Business Class offers lie-flat seating, larger and more private spaces to work or relax, and top-notch in-flight dining options. This class is ideal for longer flights and business travelers who seek a relaxing environment for their journey.
  • First Class : Exclusively available on select domestic flights, First Class offers the highest level of luxury and service. With more spacious seating, personalized attention from the crew, fine dining, and an array of entertainment options, you will experience the best that United has to offer.

Now that you are familiar with the various seating classes, you can make an informed decision when selecting the option that best suits your travel needs and preferences.

A Deep Dive into Seatbelt Length and Extenders

When flying with United Airlines, seatbelt length may vary depending on the type of aircraft.

It’s essential to be aware of your comfort and safety needs while traveling. To address these varying seatbelt lengths, United Airlines offers seatbelt extenders to accommodate passengers who need extra room.

United Airlines requires seatbelt extenders to be pre-reserved. To request an extender, you can contact the airline’s customer service before your flight. Being proactive ensures you have a comfortable and secure flight experience.

Seatbelt extenders must comply with FAA regulations, which maintain strict safety standards.

This means that personal extenders are not allowed, and you must use the ones provided by the airline. The extenders distributed by United Airlines have been tested and approved for use on their specific aircraft.

Remember, proper seatbelt usage is essential for your safety during the flight. Ensuring that your seatbelt length is sufficient and comfortable allows you to focus on enjoying your trip. Don’t hesitate to reach out to United Airlines with your seatbelt extender needs to guarantee a pleasant journey.

Choosing Your Seat: The Booking and Check-in Process

United Airlines flying

When booking your United Airlines ticket, the seat selection process begins.

You can choose a seat or change your seat assignment for most United- and United Express®-operated flights on united.com , on the United app or through your travel agent.

If no seat assignments are available at the time of booking, you can check back closer to departure. Seats may become available, allowing you to select your preferred option. Keep an eye on your itinerary for updates.

During the check-in process, you have another opportunity to select or change your seat. This is available both online, via the United app, and at the airport kiosks. Remember that advance seat assignments are subject to availability and may change.

United Airlines offers a variety of seating options, including:

  • Economy Plus
  • MileagePlus Travel Awards
  • and Premium cabin seating

Prices for preferred seating, like exit rows or aisle seats, vary based on the route. To secure a preferred seat, choose it on the seat map when booking your flight or during check-in.

For those traveling with children under 15, United’s system automatically attempts to seat them together with their parents if booking an economy ticket or above.

Always double-check your seat assignments to ensure your family is seated together.

Finally, if your itinerary includes a flight operated by another airline, seat selection may not be available until check-in. This is due to different airlines using different reservation systems, which may not share certain functions or information.

Comparing United Airlines with Other Airlines

southwest airlines airplanes

When it comes to seat size, United Airlines offers a range of options depending on the class and aircraft.

For example, the B/E Aerospace Diamond business seats on their 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft have a 2-2-2 configuration.

You can compare United’s seat offerings to those of other airlines using resources such as SeatGuru charts which provides comprehensive seat amenity comparisons.

On domestic US flights, you’ll find that Southwest Airlines , Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, Virgin America, Spirit Airlines, and Frontier Airlines also offer various seat options.

Each airline has differences in seat width, pitch, and comfort depending on the aircraft type and class of service.

While seat width and pitch information is often provided online, seatbelt length can be difficult to find.

Airlines may not publish this information on their respective websites. Instead, you can contact the airlines directly to inquire about seatbelt length specific to your flight.

For example, if you are flying with JetBlue or Alaska Airlines, you may need to call their customer service for this information.

In comparing United with other North American airlines, factors beyond seat size should also include consideration.

Customer service, in-flight amenities, baggage fees, and loyalty programs should play a role in your decision-making process. By considering these and other factors, you can choose the best airline for your travel needs.

Understanding Seat Preferences and Special Circumstances

When booking a flight on United Airlines, it’s essential to consider your seat preference and any special circumstances that may apply.

For passengers of size, choosing a comfortable seat might be a priority, as seat dimensions can vary.

According to United’s Seating Options page, basic economy and economy class seats are usually situated at the back of the plane, whereas preferred seating is in the middle or the front of the economy cabin.

Extra seating options, such as those with extra legroom and space, are available for purchase. Families and traveling companions might prefer choosing seats together on the plane.

To do so, ensure you are booking early to have more options for preferred seating.

Should you need assistance with seat preference or extra seating, do not hesitate to contact United Airlines’ customer service for help and further information.

They can provide guidance and address any queries related to your seating arrangement.

Keep in mind, seatbelt size is important for your comfort and safety during flight. It’s worth noting that there is some discrepancy in seatbelt length information, with reports suggesting sizes varying from 31″ to 39″ on United Airlines flights.

If you are concerned about fitting comfortably in your seat with the provided seatbelt, consider reaching out to customer service to verify seatbelt lengths or request an extender if needed.

Handling Changes, Swaps, and Unforeseen Circumstances

When flying with United Airlines, you may encounter situations like change without notice, schedule changes, equipment swaps, or unforeseen circumstances.

As a passenger, it’s essential to handle these situations with confidence, keeping yourself informed and updated about your flight status.

Your itinerary might be affected by various factors, such as weather, operational requirements, or carrier policy alterations.

Don’t worry; United Airlines will notify you of any adjustments and work to reschedule or accommodate you as needed.

Equipment swaps may occur when the assigned aircraft for your flight gets replaced, affecting available seating or onboard amenities.

Stay calm and adapt to these changes, making sure to verify your new seat assignment and remaining aware of any policy differences.

In case of unforeseen circumstances, you can rely on United Airlines to take necessary actions and ensure your safety.

They may offer alternative travel arrangements, provide timely information, and offer assistance to address your concerns.

Lastly, always check United Airlines’ official website for updates on any potential modifications. By staying informed and prepared, you can navigate these changes confidently and efficiently, ensuring a smoother travel experience.

Flying with United: Safety and Regulations

When flying with United Airlines, your safety and comfort are their top priorities. United adheres to all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.

The standard seats on United Airlines planes are 16.1 – 17 inches wide. For added comfort, their business class seats are 20.4 inches wide.

United Airlines seatbelts are 31 inches long. It’s important to pre-order a seatbelt extender if needed.

During your flight, pay attention to the seatbelt sign. Always fasten your seatbelt when the sign is illuminated and follow the flight attendant’s instructions.

In case of an emergency, the flight crew is trained to guide and assist you. Make sure to review the safety card located in the seat pocket in front of you.

Lastly, United complies with all security regulations, including TSA procedures. It’s your responsibility to ensure your carry-on items meet their guidelines.

By being informed and prepared, you’ll have a safe and pleasant flight with United Airlines.

Seat Pitches and Widths on the Top 6 U.S. Carriers

As the airlines continue to try and squeeze out every penny of profit, one of the ways they do it is by putting as many seats in an aircraft as possible. As a result, we’ve seen less legroom —the space between a point on one seat and the same point on the seat in front of it—seat width in a steady decline in the past 10 years.

The average seat pitch in coach class on U.S. carriers is between 30 and 33 inches, and seat width is 17 inches to 18 inches, which isn’t very comfortable, even for shorter people. Below is a list outlining seat pitch and width in economy class for the top North American airlines .

Flying can be stressful enough without also having to factor in whether you will fit in the airline seat or not.

Thankfully, you can find out exactly what the seat pitch and seat width are on your next flight, which will give you an excellent idea of whether you will run into any issues or not.

The Best Way of Knowing If You Will Fit in an Airline Seat

Airline seats are measured in both pitch and width.

Seat width is self-explanatory, but seat pitch is defined as the space between a point on one seat and the same point on the seat in front of it.

Both are important.

So, the best thing you can do before booking your next flight is to find out what type of aircraft you will be flying on and then visit SeatGuru.

SeatGuru lists the seat pitch and seat width for each jet of each airline, and will show you the best place to sit on a plane .

You can view any airline, whether that be American, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Spirit, or any one of the other airlines, including international airlines like Emirates or Virgin.

You can also see an overview of all the aircraft variants the airline uses, as well as the seat pitch and seat width in Economy, Premium Economy, and Business class.

What Happens If You Can’t Fit in an Airline Seat?

Each airline has their own policy if you can’t fit in an airline seat.

Some airlines like Delta will not require you to purchase an additional seat, but may ask you to move or wait for the next flight where there might be additional seating.

Generally, though, airlines will require you to purchase another seat, whether that be in advance or at the airport.

A seatbelt extender will also be necessary.

At What Size Do You Need Two Airline Seats?

There isn’t a specific size at which you will suddenly have to purchase two airline seats .

Generally, all airlines will require passengers to comfortably fit within one seat with the armrests down.

If you can do this, you will not have to purchase an additional seat.

There is No Weight Limit for Airline Passengers

Airlines do not necessarily require their passengers to meet any weight restrictions.

If a passenger will clearly require the use of two seats, then they will be asked to purchase an additional seat.

However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), outlined new guidance in a recent advisory that may require passengers to state their weight or even step “on a scale before boarding the aircraft”.

Fortunately, though, this is done at random and a passenger can refuse.

Airlines Won’t Directly Charge More for Overweight Passengers

Each airline has its own “passenger of size” policy, which is used to determine whether they will charge overweight passengers more if they are unable to comfortably be seated with both armrests fully down.

Generally, most airlines will charge more for overweight passengers in the form of purchasing a second seat.

However, other airlines like Southwest and Hawaiian Airlines do their best to accommodate obese passengers by offering a second seat for free or refunding the advance purchase of a second seat.

Which Airline Should You Fly With If You’re Overweight?

While we go more in-depth in our Best Airlines for Overweight Passengers article, we recommend flying with JetBlue, Delta, American Airlines or Spirit.

Is it Discriminatory to Charge Passengers Who Can’t Fit in Their Seat More?

There are arguments for and against charging passengers who can’t fit in an airline seat more, but changes may be coming.

For domestic flights in Canada, any passenger who requires two seats can get the cost of the second seat refunded if they have a doctor’s note.

In Australia, it is actually illegal for airlines to charge passengers different amounts based on their body sizes.

According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, half of Americans will be obese by the year 2030, with one in four having a body mass index (BMI) of over 35.

Therefore, perhaps something has to give.

What to expect flying premium economy with United

How to book united premium plus, united premium plus vs. economy plus, 4 ways to get good value from united premium plus, final thoughts on united premium economy.

Are you looking for an upgraded experience when flying United Airlines but you're not ready to shell out for first class just yet? United premium economy service, which is called Premium Plus, may be the right fit. With larger seats in a semi-separate cabin, complimentary alcohol and two free checked bags, it’s available on select long-haul international flights and some transcontinental domestic routes.

Here’s what to expect with United Premium Plus and how to book it with MileagePlus miles .

What is premium economy on United and what does it offer? While your exact United Premium Plus economy experience may vary depending on your route (the class of service is currently available on select long-haul international, premium transcontinental and Hawaii routes), there are still a few things you can count on no matter what.

Bag allowance

The United Premium Plus baggage allowance is two free checked bags , plus reserved overhead bin space for your carry-on. Regular economy seats don’t offer any free checked bags on domestic flights and only one checked bag on select international flights.

You can also get a free checked bag (or two) if you hold certain United Airlines credit cards . More on that below.

Premier Access

Premium Plus passengers also get Premier Access, which offers dedicated airport check-in lines, exclusive security lanes at select airports, priority bag handling and priority boarding. Those flying in economy or Economy Plus do not get Premier Access benefits unless they have United elite status, Star Alliance Gold status, an eligible United credit card or have purchased the Premier Access add-on. Passengers flying in business class, first class or United Polaris also receive Premier Access.

United’s Premium Plus seats are up to 19 inches wide and feature a 38-inch seat pitch, providing up to 7 more inches of legroom than most standard economy and Economy Plus seats. Seats also recline 6 inches, meaning you have more room to spread out and get comfy.

Since the seats are bigger, there are also less seats per row compared to economy. As seen in the image above of United’s Boeing 777-200, the Premium Plus cabin has eight seats per row while the economy cabin has 10 seats per row. Note that depending on the plane, the number of seats per row may differ, but there will still be less seats per row in Premium Plus vs. economy.

Premium Plus seats are closer to the front of the plane so you can get to your seat and off the plane faster, and each has an adjustable leg rest, footrest, power outlet and USB outlet.

With a Premium Plus ticket, you’ll also have access to discounted United Club passes when booking select long-haul international flights, so you can kick back and relax in style before, after or during a layover on long travel days.

Entertainment

Don’t worry about bringing your own technology for entertainment purposes: Seatback screens in Premium Plus are up to 13 inches (compared with the standard 9 inches). You’ll also get premium noise-reducing headphones and a Saks Fifth Avenue blanket and pillow on select long-haul international flights.

Food and beverages

Alcoholic beverages are free in Premium Plus. In regular economy, alcoholic drinks are only free on transatlantic flights, flights between the U.S. and some South American countries, and certain transpacific flights.

United’s Premium Plus food choices are also different from those provided to economy passengers. On select long-haul international flights, there are upgraded dining options. On premium transcontinental routes, passengers get a complimentary hot entree, fruit and dessert. Example menu items may include chicken katsu or portobello mushroom and caramelized onion ravioli.

It’s not as easy or straightforward to find a Premium Plus fare as it is to locate, say, a business or first class ticket. Start on United.com and enter your travel dates and destinations.

united airlines seat measurements

Make sure to choose “Premium economy” where you see the cabin class and, if you want to book an award ticket, choose “Book with miles.” Then, select “Find flights” to start the search.

When the flight options populate, look under the premium economy column to see if a Premium Plus seat is available. You may encounter a ticket with the label “Mixed cabin.”

united airlines seat measurements

Some flights that include connections may not offer Premium Plus seating on all flight segments. It’s a good idea to look more closely at the ticket to view the seat type offered with the premium economy ticket. Select “Details” for any flight you’d like to view, and you will see the available seat type listed for each flight segment.

united airlines seat measurements

After choosing your flight, you’ll be able to select your seat choice as you complete the booking process. However, you can also preview the seats available by selecting “Seats,” which is right next to “Details.”

United’s economy offerings are divided into four ticket types:

Basic economy (the most restrictive).

Economy Plus.

Premium Plus (premium economy).

So then what is United’s Economy Plus, and what’s the difference between Economy Plus and Premium Plus?

» Learn more: United Premium Plus vs. Economy Plus: Does it make a difference?

Premium Plus is United’s premium economy fare and comes with the perks mentioned above, including Premier Access, upgraded food, free alcoholic drinks, discounted United Club lounge access, baggage allowance, roomier seats in a separate cabin and enhanced entertainment options.

Economy Plus, on the other hand, is an economy seat with more legroom that’s located near the front of the economy cabin or by the exit row. Economy Plus is an option that you can purchase during or after booking a standard economy ticket. You can also purchase an annual Economy Plus subscription. If you’re a United elite member, you can select an Economy Plus seat for free when you buy a standard economy fare.

Worth noting, when you're in Economy Plus, you don't get a free checked bag. However, if you use a United-branded credit card, you can get your bag fees waived, as well as enjoy priority boarding and, depending on the card, even access the United Club airport lounges. Credit card options include:

Here’s how to get the most out of every Premium Plus award booking on United.

1. Book Premium Plus using United miles

Booking with miles is typically a great way to save money and get the best value out of points. In one search for flights from LAX to London, an economy ticket cost $2,288 for a refundable fare or 30,000 miles for a valuation of 7.6 cents per mile. A Premium Plus fare cost $2,714 or 56,600 miles for a valuation of 4.8 cents per mile.

Since NerdWallet values United miles at 1.2 cents per mile, both of these tickets reflect a great use of miles. But ticket prices can vary greatly, so make sure to do the math before booking to see if you’re getting a good return on your mileage investment.

2. Book Premium Plus using Star Alliance partners

Since United is a member of Star Alliance, you may be able to find a good deal on award flights when booking a United Premium Plus ticket using partner airline miles. You can search for United award availability using Avianca LifeMiles , Air Canada Aeroplan or Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer .

3. Take advantage of lounge pass discounts

If your flight includes multiple stops, the option to purchase a discounted lounge pass may come in handy to assuage the pain of long-haul international flights and extended layovers. You can purchase a pass during booking to guarantee access.

4. Travel off-peak to save miles

United doesn’t publish a set award chart . Instead, mileage requirements for award flights are based on a variety of factors, including demand. So booking during off-peak times and seasons may provide you with a better deal.

Hovering somewhere between business class and regular economy is United Airlines Premium Plus. It offers roomier seats in a separate cabin, free alcohol, upgraded meals, free checked bags and discounted United Club lounge access, but it may come at a cost when booking with miles.

Additionally, flights that offer this class of service can be tricky to find. But if Premium Plus is available, it’s worth checking to see if you can score a good deal for long flights.

United’s premium economy product is called Premium Plus. It is available on select transcontinental domestic routes and some long-haul international flights. Premium Plus seats are larger and in a separate cabin.

When flying Premium Plus, passengers get enhanced food options, free alcoholic beverages, discounted United Club lounge access, Premier Access, additional baggage allowance and upgraded entertainment options.

Yes, those flying in Premium Plus receive discounted access to United Club lounges. United doesn’t disclose the cost of lounge access for Premium Plus passengers, but the price of entry should be lower than the $59 United Club day pass.

Unless it's an involuntary change imposed by United (e.g., oversold flight, canceled flight, flight change or inability to accommodate a passenger in a premium cabin), Premium Plus seats are nonrefundable if canceled more than 24 hours after booking.

Every time you board a plane, you probably hear flight attendants telling passengers to stow small, personal items under the seat in front of them and larger bags in the overhead bins. Of course, space on airplanes is notoriously tight these days, so you might wonder just how much room you have under that seat in front of you. The answer? It depends. Many airlines don't list the exact underseat dimensions, but they do share the maximum size permitted for personal items, providing an approximate measure of how much space is under the average seat.

Any items that stick out could pose a safety hazard during an emergency evacuation, so flight attendants are usually pretty stringent on this rule. If fighting for overhead bin space doesn't appeal to you (and who does it appeal to?), knowing the measurements of the space under your seat could save you time and stress. This is even more important for pet owners traveling with their furry friends in the cabin. Thankfully, we've done the work for you and rounded up 10 of the best airline-approved pet carriers that will fit under the seat.

It's important to remember that airline underseat dimensions vary by aircraft — a Boeing 737 won't have the same seats as a Bombardier Q400 — and by individual seats, so these measurements are estimated, not exact. Roomy first-class seats may have a few extra inches to spare, and the main cabin middle seat might have more room than its neighbors. Meanwhile, people sitting at the bulkhead should remember that all that extra legroom does come at a price — these seats do not have underseat storage and passengers will have to put everything in the overhead bin.

Here are some of the most popular U.S. airlines' underseat dimensions and personal item sizes. And to make the most of the space, check out our picks for the best underseat luggage pieces that are still surprisingly roomy.

The airline does not release exact measurements for the space below seats, instead using purses, briefcases, and laptop bags as examples of suitable personal items. According to Air Canada’s carry-on guidelines , personal items should not exceed 17 inches by 13 inches by 6 inches.

Alaska Airlines allows passengers to bring one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop bag, and one piece of carry-on luggage not exceeding 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches. They don't specify the size limit of the personal item, but the seat width is approximately 17 inches.

Passengers can place one personal item under the seat in front of them. The item should not exceed 18 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches.

According to airline policy , any personal items stowed beneath seats should not exceed 18 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches.

Delta defines personal items that must fit under the seat as "a purse or laptop bag or item of similar size." Delta has a maximum carry-on size of 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches — no bag may exceed 45 linear inches combined.

Frontier Airlines defines personal items as “purses, totes, computer bags, briefcases, and kids' backpacks.” Underseat items should be no larger than 14 inches tall, 18 inches wide, and 8 inches long.

Hawaiian Airlines defines personal items as "a laptop bag, briefcase, purse, or backpack that can fit under the seat in front of you."

Under-the-seat baggage cannot exceed 17 inches by 13 inches by 8 inches on all JetBlue flights. Note that travelers flying Blue Basic are only permitted a personal underseat item (not a carry-on bag).

Lufthansa allows passengers to stow one personal item, such as a handbag or briefcase, under the seat. The item must not exceed 11.8 inches by 15.7 inches by 3.9 inches.

Southwest doesn't provide exact underseat dimensions either, but they include "purses, briefcases, cameras, food containers, or laptops (case included)" as personal items that must be stored under the seat in front of you.

Personal items must not exceed 18 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches, including handles and wheels, on Spirit Airlines flights.

Purses, backpacks, duffel bags, or other carry-ons stowed under the seat on Sun Country Airlines flights should be no larger than 17 inches by 13 inches by 9 inches.

The maximum size for a personal item that fits under the seat on United flights is 9 inches by 10 inches by 17 inches.

Carry-on bag

The overhead bin should accommodate your carry-on bag. A carry-on bag can have a maximum size of 9 x 14 x 22 inches (22 x 35 x 56 cm). They include wheels and handles in this.

Keep in mind that these measurements take the luggage’s wheels and handle into account while measuring. It is a requirement if your carry-on bag exceeds the required weight an extra cost of 35 dollars. Despite the bag restrictions basically, there is no maximum weight limit.

Although United restricts the size of carry-on luggage, there is no maximum weight limit doesn’t matter how much carry-on luggage weighs as long as you can put it inside and they permit it to be brought on board. Note that it is you to place your carry-on bag in the cabin’s overhead bin thus ensuring you can be able to carry the weight of the bag

Personal item

You should be able to stow your personal item behind the seat in front of you. Personal items such as handbags, backpacks, or laptop bags are permitted as long as it can securely stow them under the seat in front of you. In case you have larger carry-on bags than the recommended size or if you have extra personal items, you will have to pay extra service charges or baggage fees for them. Thus always meet the dimension requirements on the mainline aircraft and avoid gate handling fees and also a low-cost carrier.

Oversized bags

We can’t accept bags that measure (length + width + height) over 115 inches (292 centimeters).

Simple Flying

Size matters how seats per flight vary for the world's largest airlines.

Which airlines do you think rank high and low for seats per flight?

  • Among the world's 100 largest airlines, Emirates leads with 411 seats per flight, well over double the world average.
  • It is, of course, due to its massive sub-fleet of Airbus A380s.
  • With just 113 seats per flight, Air New Zealand is at the other end of the scale, heavily influenced by its turboprops.

If all the world's domestic and international flights in February are considered, airlines have an average of 160 seats per flight (S/F) , based on Cirium information. But what about the top 100 carriers, which are so large and instrumental that they account for 81% of the world's capacity this month? Given their sheer dominance, their average is necessarily similar (169). More interesting is the huge but inevitable variation.

World's top 100 carriers: most S/F

Not surprisingly, behemoth Emirates is the world's largest airline with the most S/F. It ranks very comfortably first. Its average capacity is more than a third greater than number two, Cathay Pacific, and two and a half times more than the world average.

This dominance is, of course, heavily influenced by Emirates' Airbus A380s. Seat capacity varies from 484 in a four-class configuration to 650 in a two-class layout. Its Boeing 777-200LRs and 777-300ERs reduce its average.

Emirates Airbus A380 after take off

Notice how all 10 airlines shown below are from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. This is not surprising: these areas are well known for widebodies, even on short routes and domestically, and freight is often critical. The absence of Chinese airlines is also unsurprising, as they revolve around narrowbodies. The first Chinese carrier was Hainan, in 21st place.

Notice the S/F difference between Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad, with the last two airlines using narrowbodies and, generally, lower-capacity widebodies. It would be different if Emirates' ever-closer partner, flydubai, were included.

B-16707 EVA Air Boeing 777-35E(ER) (1)-1

World's top 100 carriers: lowest S/F

Air New Zealand tops the table for having the lowest S/F of the world's largest 100 operators. It has just 113 seats on average, which is, of course, heavily influenced by its domestic operation using its 50-seat Dash 8 Q300s and 68-seat ATR 72s.

Cirium shows that turboprops operate 63% of ANZ's total flights in February. They'll be used on 33 domestic routes to 20 airports. The extent of their dominance is such that they far outweigh ANZ's jets in the S/F stakes.

Air New Zealand Bombardier Dash 8 Q300

Smaller aircraft mean higher cost per seat mile (CASM), lower trip costs (i.e., to operate one flight), and fewer passengers are required to break even at a specified percentage point.

To cover the higher CASM, they require higher fares to increase passenger revenue per seat mile (PRASM). This dictates where they need to be used and what type of passengers they should target.

Notice the US Big Three

American, United, and Delta are present in the table above. This is mainly thanks to their regional units' heavy use of regional jets. In February, 43% of American's flights deploy RJs, while it is 39% for United and 33% for Delta. This is mainly to feed their many hubs, both in network breadth and frequency terms, driving connectivity and competitiveness.

What sets this carrier apart: Designed with airline approval in mind, the medium size of this traveler-favorite carrier accommodates cats or small dogs with its spacious interior. Mesh panels zip open on three sides of the carrier as well as the top, ensuring a well-ventilated bag. The outer material is a lightweight and durable polyester. A removable, machine-washable woolen mat makes the interior comfy for your pet; there's also a safety leash you can use to secure your pet inside.

You can use the connectable loop handles and padded shoulder strap for easy carrying, and this carrier bag folds up when you're ready to store it away. The Henkelion Pet Carrier even comes in several fun colors, such as purple or green.

Travelers appreciate: "I have used the Henkelion soft-sided carrier many times," says Robbie Parker of travel blog Expat in Paradise , who travels with his small dogs. "These are great carriers as they are hardy for travel, collapse for storage, and fit perfectly under the seat for in cabin travel. Also, I like that they have one side that is mesh and the other side is solid with a pocket. You can face solid side toward the aisle so people walking around the plane don't upset your dog." He adds, "Overall, I would recommend it for in-cabin plane travel."

Frequent traveler and luxury travel advisor Ashley Les, founder of Postcards From , also appreciates that the design puts her cats at ease when flying. "I find that with more mesh, cats are exposed to more light and sight – it gets them more anxious," she says, adding: "There are multiple ways to get my cats in the carriers, from the sides or above, as well. I love that you can take out the bottom to wash it separately."

Price: $28.99 or less for medium

Sherpa's Original Deluxe Pet Carrier – Medium in black against white background.

Courtesy of Sherpa

What sets this carrier apart: Beyond a patented, crash-tested flexible wire frame that keeps your little buddy safe, Sherpa provides a Guaranteed on Board program that offers a refund for your flight and airline pet fee if you're denied boarding because of the small or medium sizes of this carrier. This mesh and polyester bag is an industry standard with good airflow. The front and top entries have locking zippers, and this collapsible carrier also features a removable (and machine-washable) faux-lambskin liner, a rear pocket for storage, and a seat belt safety strap that doubles as a luggage strap.

Travelers appreciate: This Sherpa carrier is renowned for its reliable functionality and amazing value. Recent travelers say the medium carrier fits well under the seat and keeps their pet comfortable in transit.

Price: $70 or less for medium

What sets this carrier apart: This Petsfit carrier's medium size adheres to most airline requirements (as does the small carrier). One of the mesh windows can be unzipped to form an extra compartment, expanding the carrier by 9.4 inches for an extended width of 20.4 inches. This product is a great option if you need a carrier for air travel but still want your pet to enjoy a bit more space to stretch out when not tucked under the airplane seat.

The sturdy solid wire construction ensures the bag won't collapse but is flexible enough to tuck into a small space, though you may need to remove the rods on either side if the carrier is too tall to fit easily underneath. There's a side pocket for storage, double zippers and a water-repellent inner cloth.

Travelers appreciate: "The Petsfit carrier was flexible enough to squeeze under most airplane seats, but still was sturdy enough to hold," says Alexandra Lauren of the travel blog The Bucket List Mermaid , who has used this carrier to fly with her cat. "My kitty could look around the airport with the built-in leash in the carrier. The expandable portion was an added bonus because it allowed for more room for my pet when on long layovers or when I had an empty seat on the airplane." Lauren also recommends Petsfit's expandable backpack-style carrier for a hands-free option.

Price:  $56.99 or less for medium

Natuvalle 6-in-1 Pet Carrier – Small in blue against white background.

Courtesy of Natuvalle

What sets this carrier apart: For travelers seeking versatility, this Natuvalle cat or dog carrier can be used like a backpack, shoulder bag, tote with carrying handles or even – if worn on your front – a baby carrier. This convertible choice can also be used as a car seat crate with built-in seat belt loops, and you have the option of using it either in the upright or side position. Other features include zipper locks, mesh panels, reinforced stitching, two walk-through doors and a photo ID tag. The carrier is foldable and has reflective stripes for night travel. While there are medium and large size options, the extra-small and small sizes are your best bet when it comes to fitting under an airplane seat.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners like the versatility of this bag; some travelers say the carrier fits best under the seat when on its side, as the upright position can be too tall.

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Best Backpack: PetAmi Backpack Pet Carrier

The PetAmi Backpack Pet Carrier in black against white background.

What sets this carrier apart: Go hands-free with this PetAmi backpack-style carrier. A sturdy frame maintains its shape while you traipse through airport terminals, with chest and waist buckles for extra support. Four-sided access makes loading easy, and a rollaway mesh top means your furry friend can stick their head out the top when you're not in the air. The safety strap and buckle are designed to thwart even great escape artists, and a sherpa-lined bed entices fur babies to relax. The backpack carrier color options include red and purple.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners like the easy carrying this style provides, though they advise that you'll need to store this bag on its side in the plane cabin, and it won't fit on every airline.

Price: $39.99 or less

Away's The Pet Carrier in light blue against white background.

What sets this carrier apart: It's a splurge, but this cat and dog carrier is made by Away, a popular luggage brand known for its sleek design and functionality. The same applies to this nylon and leather tote, which comes in black or a coast blue. The water-resistant lining is paired with sherpa bedding and exterior pockets that can hold a phone, keys or waste bags. If you already have an Away suitcase, this carrier will fit seamlessly over the handle with its trolley sleeve.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners who travel with this bag like that it's roomy, saying their pets seem comfortable inside. This carrier fits pets up to 18 pounds but is a bit on the larger side of an airline-approved carry-on, so be sure to research your airline's policies before taking it aboard.

Price: $225 or less

Dog inside a blue Sleepypod Air against white background.

What sets this carrier apart: The Sleepypod Air is designed to compress to fit under the seat during takeoff and landing; when the seat belt sign is off, your pet can enjoy slightly more room (but be aware that it doesn't hold its reduced size in a freestanding position, only when tucked into a small space). This unique carrier employs sturdy luggage-grade ballistic nylon for its base, with a panel of mesh running along the front, top and back. A removable privacy panel can be slid over part of the mesh. Available in multiple colors, this crash-tested model also has a seat belt strap, a trolley sleeve and a comfortable shoulder strap for carrying it.

Travelers appreciate: Users like the carrier's many features and say it's a good option especially for larger cats traveling by air, but some pet owners felt there was not enough airflow (especially with the privacy panel) for longer flights.

Price: $199.99 or less

What sets this carrier apart: Any furry friends larger than about 20 pounds will likely have to travel in the cargo hold if they're not a service animal. You'll want a very sturdy dog crate for the journey that meets every regulation, and SportPet's kennel passes the test for many travelers. This carrier meets International Air Transport Association guidelines with two snap-on water dishes and four stickers that indicate a live animal is inside; a "floor gutter" contains messes for easy cleanup. The durable plastic frame is connected with metal nuts and bolts and features airline-required tie holes for bungees.

This travel crate comes in six sizes, from small up to XXX-large, so be sure to determine the right size for your pet. A cushioned bed is not included and costs extra. For more information on pets traveling in cargo, consult the FAQ section at the bottom of this page.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners like the sturdy construction and the compliance with airline regulations, but the traveler-favorite feature is the removable wheels, which are included with the carrier (except with size small).

Price: Ranges by size from $76 to $385

Best for Cats in Cargo: Petmate Two-Door Kennel

Petmate's Two-Door Kennel in pink against white background.

Courtesy of Petmate

What sets this carrier apart: This option made of hard plastic and steel wire is tough enough to protect your cargo-contained cat, according to recent travelers. (Keep in mind that airlines do not recommend hard-sided carriers for in-cabin travel, and this kennel is too large to fit under airline seats.) The two front and top doors assist with entering and exiting, and color options like hot pink or blue will make this kennel easy to spot. The carrier comes in small (24-inch) and extra-small (19-inch) sizes, so choose accordingly based on the measurements of your cat. As with most hard-sided crates, you will have to purchase a plush bed separately.

Travelers appreciate: "I haven't traveled by air with this carrier, but I've owned it for years and really appreciate how sturdy it is," says Catriona Kendall, associate editor of travel at U.S. News. "The assembly of the carrier is straightforward, and my cats feel safe enough to hang out in it at home."

Price: $66.99 or less for 24-inch

How to choose the best pet carrier

There are a few major points to consider when choosing a carrier that will serve as your pet's safe space during a flight:

Size: Selecting the right carrier size for your pet is essential not only for your pets' comfort but also for their safety, according to Sara Hogan, hospital manager at Clarendon Animal Care in Virginia. "Please ensure the measurements for your carrier meet a standard that allows for your pet to comfortably turn around AND lay down," she says. But be aware that if the carrier is too large for your furry friend, they could end up injured in transit. The best way to determine the right size is to take measurements of your pet; to be as precise as possible, use the IATA's formula .

Keep in mind that only carriers able to fit under the seat in front of you are allowed in the plane cabin – a space that will vary by airline. Consult the next section on airline policies for more information.

Airflow: Don't underestimate the importance of adequate airflow. "Carriers and crates really need to have proper ventilation for short or long-term travel," Hogan says. "There IS a difference between taking your pet down the street to a friend's house or the vet and taking your pet on a trip with any sort of additional time involved."

Stability: Check the quality of all the zippers and materials − you want this to be an escape-proof carrier, and any malfunction can put your pet at risk. "If something has previously broken or fallen off the carrier or crate look to replace the piece or the entire crate/carrier," Hogan advises.

Soft-sided vs. hard-sided: If your pet is small enough to fly in the cabin, most airlines highly recommend a soft-sided carrier, which gives the most flexibility. Airlines are often slightly more lenient with the dimensions for soft-sided carriers in the cabin as long as they are able to fit underneath the seat without blocking the aisle of the airplane. Another bonus: Soft pet carriers often come with removable fleece bedding for extra comfort.

Note: Crates and carriers destined for the cargo hold of the plane must be hard-sided. Find more details on carrier specifications for the cargo hold in the FAQ section at the bottom of this page.

Airline pet carrier dimensions

Each airline sets its own specifications and safety rules for pets in the plane cabin with you, so be sure to check with your intended airline for dimension limits, breed restrictions and other guidelines. Be aware, too, that most major airlines based in the U.S. do not offer an option to transport animals in cargo.

Use the links below to find more information on the specific pet policies for the following U.S.-based airlines. Each airline's size limit for soft-sided pet carriers in the cabin is also listed, with dimensions given in length by width by height.

  • Alaska Airlines : 17 x 11 x 9.5 inches
  • Allegiant Air : 19 x 16 x 9 inches
  • American Airlines : 18 x 11 x 11 inches

How to prepare to fly with a pet

Help your pet acclimate.

When preparing to travel with your furry companion, planning ahead is key, especially if your pet isn't used to being confined in a crate or carrier. "I recommend buying the carrier as far in advance of travel as possible to allow your dog to become comfortable relaxing in the carrier in a familiar home environment before traveling," says Amanda Farah, CPDT-KA, national training and behavior coordinator for Best Friends Animal Society.

Some pets are sensitive to loud noises, so one way to prepare them for the journey is by playing recordings of sounds they might encounter in transit, Farah says. "I'd say a good general rule is that because so much of what they encounter during air travel will be new and potentially stressful, you should familiarize them to many factors as possible in the weeks or even months leading up to travel."

Keep in mind that airlines limit the number of pets allowed on a flight, so book early and try to secure a direct flight to cut down on travel time.

Familiarize yourself with your departure airport

Before you set off on your journey, familiarize yourself with the airport you're departing from – such as where to find a pet relief area – and how to go through security with a pet in tow. For example, you must never place your pet on the security conveyor belt (only the empty carrier goes through the X-ray tunnel).

Research your destination

This is a crucial step. Some countries will not allow pets in at all, while other destinations (such as Hawaii) may have strict rules about rabies vaccines or require all animals to travel in cargo. Christine Barton, a veterinarian with The Vets , recommends checking the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website to learn about requirements for health certificates, vaccines and more.

Other considerations will depend on what type of vacation you're planning; if it involves hiking or camping with your dog, Barton suggests checking the expected weather, making a small emergency kit for you and your pet, and considering a GPS tracker for remote areas. Wherever you're headed, locate the closest emergency animal hospital just in case and make sure to book pet-friendly accommodations .

Consult your vet

Once you've done your research, your veterinarian can help ensure your pet has everything you both need to travel, such as microchipping, required or recommended vaccines (and proof of them), testing, and health records, Barton says. A vet can also address any health concerns. "Doctors can discuss risks, precautions, and things to monitor while traveling," Barton explains, adding that you should make sure your pet is up to date on needed preventive medications, such as treatment for fleas or heartworm.

If your furry friend struggles with anxiety, your vet can prescribe them a medication to make the journey less stressful for both of you. "Talk to your veterinarian before administering any sort of medication to your pet, but definitely consider it for future travel," Hogan says.

Frequently Asked Questions

A carrier being "airline-approved" typically means it adheres to the airline's size requirements, is leakproof, provides adequate airflow and keeps your pet securely inside.

You can find a pet carrier on wheels, such as the  Snoozer 4-in-1 Roll Around Pet Carrier  or the  SportPet Rolling Plastic Kennel , but keep in mind that most wheeled pet carriers are too large to fit under the seat on most airlines, even with detachable wheels. Wheeled options can make your furry friend easier for you to transport, but they also tend to make for a bumpy ride for your pet, so consider carefully whether a carrier on wheels is right for your cat or dog, especially if they're easily frightened.

Most major airlines in the U.S. do not allow pets to travel in cargo; some, like American Airlines, only offer this service for active military or diplomatic personnel. Of the major U.S. airlines, only Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines currently accept animals in the cargo hold, so keep that in mind if you have a medium or large dog – or if your intended destination does not welcome in-cabin pets.

Most animals who fly in the cargo hold are fine, but there's still a risk of your pet being killed, injured or lost, according to the Humane Society of the United States. The most common dangers are excessively hot or cold temperatures, poorly ventilated crates, and rough handling. Be sure to follow all IATA guidelines for cargo crates to ensure your pet's safety. Before you book a flight, you may also want to research the airline's history with companion animals in the cargo hold.

The kennel you choose for cargo travel must allow your pet enough room to stand, sit upright, turn around while standing and lie in a natural position, according to the IATA. Carriers must made of rigid materials and include a solid roof, a leakproof base, a door with well-maintained hardware, working handles and ventilation on all four sides. Labels that say "Live Animal" and "This Way Up" are also required by the IATA.

A water dish must be securely affixed to the inside of the carrier, with open access for your pet to drink and for someone to refill it from the outside without opening the crate. A food container can either be inside the carrier if it's sealed or attached to the outside.

A pet carrier usually counts as either a personal item or a carry-on. Depending on the airline policy, you may be able to bring either a personal item or a carry-on bag (not both) in addition to your carrier. Check your airline's carry-on luggage allowance and pet policy to see what you can bring.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture requires puppies and kittens to be at least 8 weeks old to travel, but airlines may impose their own age restrictions on top of that. On Delta, for example, companion animals must be at least 10 weeks old for domestic flights. United Airlines says your pet should be at least 4 months old for international travel to comply with rabies vaccine requirements.

Your furry friend will incur certain fees for flying, but the cost will vary by airline. American Airlines, as an example, charges a $125 service fee for a carry-on pet, while Allegiant's fee is $50. Cargo fees may depend on trip details: Hawaiian Airlines charges $60 in fees for domestic flights and $225 for flights between Hawaii and North America, while the cargo fee on Alaska Airlines is $100. Service animals typically fly at no charge as long as they meet the airline's requirements.

It depends on your pet, according to Hogan. "If they're quite anxious you may want to offer food with a bit more advanced time prior to the flight to avoid vomiting in the carrier or on themselves, however, not too much time where they'll be hungry throughout the travel day," she advises. "Water is important to offer as often as possible in any setting. Access to using the bathroom more than once prior to travel is also advised so as not to miss an opportunity for output!"

Conveniently, some airports may have pet relief areas your dog can use either before or after you go through security, but that's something you'll have to research beforehand.

No. Unless your pet is a service animal of a certain size, airlines typically require pets in the cabin to be secured in their carrier and stowed under the seat in front of you.

Southwest's massive seating change leads to a lot of questions

Southwest Airlines offers a premium experience at value pricing.

That's not really how the airline markets itself, but that's the reality. Southwest provides more comfortable seats with more legroom than United, Delta, American, and other premium airlines offer.

The comfort part, of course, may be a bit subjective, but Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) offers well-padded seats with ample (by airline standards) legroom.

That benefit gets lost a bit because the airline does not assign seats but instead has a polarizing open-boarding policy. But the reality is that Southwest has always made reasonable efforts not to skimp on passenger amenities.

Related: Delta, Southwest and United Airlines make unpopular seating decision

And that's valuable, as anyone who has flown Spirit or Frontier knows. Those value airlines use hard plastic seats designed to weigh less to save on fuel.

In theory, offering unpadded seats enables those airlines to save money, which gets passed on to customers in the form of low fares. That's cold comfort, however, for passengers stuck spending two to five hours sitting on unforgiving chairs with limited legroom so the airline can cram as many seats onto its planes as possible.

Southwest's history as a passenger-friendly airline has come into question, after the company released artist renderings of its new seats, which look a lot closer to what Spirit and Frontier offer than its current seats.

Southwest is changing its seats

Southwest does not offer different tiers of seating. Passengers can pay extra to get on the plane first, which gives them their choice of seats, but aside from the exit rows, which have a little more legroom, all the seats are the same.

View From the Wing's Gary Leff says the new seats might be a step toward changing that and he expressed surprise at what the airline has described about its new seats.

"It was striking that these seats look thin and not well padded – a genuine downgrade from the older tan seats that are still flying and even less comfortable than the seats in the 737 Max 8 today," he wrote .

Leff suggested that the thinner seats could be a way for the airline to add more seats to its planes. That would be an easy way to increase revenue, but Southwest has publicly said that's not the plan.

Will Southwest add premium seating?

In theory, thinner seats could also allow Southwest to add some premium seating with added legroom. Both Spirit and Frontier Airlines, neither of which offers business- or first-class seats, do sell some larger seats and some with added legroom.

Leff suggested that the new seats could be Southwest at least partly moving away from its open-boarding policy.

The airline, however, has insisted that it does not plan to change its seat pitch — the distance between seats — on its planes.

"The pitch isn’t changing. The new seats maintain the 32” pitch we currently have on our 175-seat aircraft. In the images you’ve seen, those are renderings, so it isn’t accurate to say we are using thinner, less padded seats," a Southwest spokesperson said.

That creates a bit of a mystery, as the thinner seats will create added space on the plane. Even if those seats are not less comfortable than the current ones (something the airline insists is the case), they are thinner. And that means that if the airline isn't adding seats or changing the pitch, it has some unaccounted-for added space.

"Something doesn't add up here," Leff said. There seems to be another piece to this puzzle that Southwest has decided it's not ready to discuss publicly. That won't be higher-priced seats, according to the airline.

"There is nothing in the works around premium seating," the airline added.

New DOT family seating dashboard makes airline seat selection policies more transparent

united airlines seat measurements

The Department of Transportation announced a new tool to help families figure out which airlines will let them sit together for free.

A  family seating dashboard went live Monday morning, outlining airline policies and fees for family seat selection.

"As recently as a month ago, no U.S. airlines guaranteed no-fee family seating. Now, after weeks of USDOT and the Biden Administration pressing airlines to improve their customer service, American Airlines and Frontier Airlines have stepped forward and guarantee no-fee family seating," a statement from the DOT said. "While this represents significant progress, USDOT is not stopping there – and has already begun work on a common-sense rulemaking to ban airlines from charging families junk fees to sit together."

At the time of its launch, only Alaska, American and Frontier Airlines guaranteed adjacent seats for travelers age 13 or younger with an adult travel companion at no additional cost, according to the DOT.

The dashboard allows users to click through to see individual airline policies.

Flight delayed or canceled?: What you need to know and what airlines owe travelers

The new tool comes amid President Joe Biden's larger push for pricing transparency across many service sectors.

During his State of the Union address, Biden said he was cracking down on so-called junk fees at airlines, hotels, banks and in other sectors.

According to the DOT, the dashboard "provides a clear comparison of services the airlines have committed to provide, which will assist consumers when deciding which airline to fly. It makes it easier to know which airlines have stepped up and guarantee adjacent seats for young children traveling with an accompanying adult at no additional cost and which airlines do not."

Last year, the DOT launched a similar tool outlining the delay compensation policies of major U.S. airlines.
