' src=

 • Daily Goodie Box - Get a GIANT box of free samples to test out and try shipped right to you at no cost!
 • Nielsen - Download their app and get paid $50!

Well, you’re in the right place.

Today, let’s look at 35 different opportunities to get paid as a participant in research studies.

Types of Paid Online Research Studies

A medical study involves a group of people within an age group, gender, race, ethnic group, or individuals with the same specific health issues.

Participating in these studies often involves answering a combination of interviews, tests, surveys, or experimentation to be able to answer questions on how to diagnose, treat, prevent, or cure health disorders and diseases.

Aside from paid medical studies, market research makes use of paid online research to find out what customers want or need from various products and companies.

The cool thing about paid online research studies available today is that even if you are not a part of the target audience, you can still participate in the study in another capacity.

Online research studies can be either quantitative or qualitative.

Quantitative studies are the ones with static, pre-planned answers. A questionnaire with multiple-choice answers is a good example of this study. It is made as such so that the researcher can easily analyze the results.

Qualitative studies are a bit more complex since they involve open-ended answers.

However, this type of study ends up with better data. Focus groups and interviews are both methods used in qualitative studies.

How Much Can You Earn from Paid Research Studies?

Imagine earning up to $1,000 just for sharing your opinion, review of a product, or thoughts about a particular experience without even stepping out of the house.

You don’t even have to spend a cent to participate in these research studies.

Most of the time, you’d only have to be at least 18 years old and currently live in the US.

Even when you’re below 18 years old, researchers sometimes allow you to participate as long as you had a waiver from your parent or legal guardian.

The amount you earn from joining research studies depend on the following:

 • Method of research — Did you join a focus group? Answered a lengthy interview? Filled out a survey form?
 • Length of study — Some interviews only take an hour and earn you $150. Some focus groups could take several sessions and end only after several weeks.
 • Type of payment — Not all companies pay cash. Some use PayPal, while others prefer checks, gift cards, prepaid cards, and so on.

Quick surveys can be as little as $10 and high as $100.

Focus group sessions range between $50 and $500 per session.

Interviews can earn you somewhere from $50 to $400 for an hour of your time.

Simply put, the amount you’ll be paid will vary from study to study.

Join These to Start Making Money Today!

Before digging into the list below, I suggest you sign up for the 3 best focus group/market research companies.

Anyone can participate and you will be invited to take part in research studies, focus groups, and product testing opportunities.

These companies pay in cash and offer cash signup bonuses to get you started.

They also send out quick surveys for which you can get paid smaller amounts (from $1 to $10).

29. FindFocusGroups

Wouldn’t it be great if there were a directory of all the paid research opportunities in the country?

FindFocusGroups is probably the closest one, as it lists more than 75,000 verified and legitimate focus groups in the country.

It’s quite simple to search by city and state, and check the information for details on whether the discussions are online or in-person.

It’s difficult to know how much the average payment would be, but upon browsing the first few studies on the homepage, they range from $50 to $300.

30. SIS International

SIS International

SIS International conducts focus group discussions in cities all over the US and globally and collects consumer feedback on anything from appliances, skincare products, gadgets, and just about anything.

If you live near New Jersey, New York City, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, or Minneapolis, you can participate in current Fieldwork research studies.

Most of the paid focus groups are face-to-face (but online are sometimes available).

Each study lasts about 1 or 2 hours. Participants earn between $75 and $100 for their time.

33. Rare Patient Voice

This company mostly looks for participants who have rare diseases and medical conditions. As such, only eligible people can benefit from the studies.

However, anyone who qualifies will receive $120/hour.

You can share your views via online surveys, clinical trials, or web-assisted phone interviews.

34. ClinicalTrials.gov

The federal government continually seeks individuals willing to participate in clinical trials testing different medications and treatments.

Studies are often conducted by the National Institutes of Health.

You can check out a list of ongoing clinical trials at clinicaltrials.gov.

Unlike other paid online research studies on this list, DScout is an app you can download.

You need to register to become a “scout” and participate in research “missions,” which will earn you money after completion.

DScout studies are usually 1-on-1 interviews or video responses, so you’d have to be comfortable in front of the camera.

Missions pay from $50 to $100, each lasting about 30 minutes.

Can I turn these Paid Online Research Studies into a Full-Time Job?

While paid online studies are highly interesting and offer legitimate side cash, this gig cannot replicate the steady income and benefits you can get with a full-time job.

You’d have to consider that many research studies:

 • have eligibility requirements (which means you’re not guaranteed a slot every time)
 • cannot be joined twice (once you’ve participated in a specific study, you can’t do a repeat)
 • have varying payments (there’s no stability in such income)

I do think it’s a legitimate side gig if you’re in between jobs or have a lot of free time on your hands.

You can also get paid answering surveys , joining focus groups , or testing products .

Top 5 Paid Open Source Programs for Student Developers

Hello, everyone Nomadev here, back with another blog on tech. Today I will be sharing the top paid open-source programs for student developers. Open source is source code that is made freely available for possible modification and redistribution. Contribution to open source is a great way to get real-world software development and other domain experience. The main motto of most programs is to help students to get some experience in open source development. so let's start

1. Google Summer of Code, GSoC

GSoC is a program started by Google that aims to promote open-source development among university students and it runs for 10 weeks. It helps organizations connect with students and get them started with their open-source projects. The stipend offered is 1500 - 3300$ depending upon the region. In the process, code is created and released for all. The acceptance rate for GSoC is around 20 to 25 percent and hence the competition is intense and gets more intense with every passing year.

gsoc.png

2. Outreachy

Outreachy is a diversity initiative that provides paid, remote internships to people subject to systemic bias and impacted by underrepresentation in the technical industry where they are living.

Outreachy internships are:

💵 Paid - $6,000 USD total internship stipend

🌍 Remote - both interns and mentors work remotely

🕰 3 months - internships run May to August, or December to March

Outreachy interns work with experienced mentors from open source communities. Outreachy internship projects may include programming, user experience, documentation, graphical design, data science, marketing, user advocacy, or community event planning.

outreachy.png

3. MLH Fellowship

It is a 12-week internship for aspiring technologists. Programs pair fun, educational curriculum with practical experience that you can put on your resume right away. It's collaborative, remote, and happens under the guidance of mentors. As an MLH Fellow on the Open Source Track, you'll contribute to the type of Open Source projects that every company depends on. You'll experience what it's like to work on a real software engineering team first-hand. All students, as well as non-student professionals, can apply to the MLH Fellowship. If required, a need-based stipend of up to $5000 is available depending on your time commitment, the country you reside in, your living conditions, and whether you are able to afford basic necessities like food, shelter, and childcare.

mlh.jpg

4. Google Season Of Docs

It provides support for open source projects to improve their documentation and gives professional technical writers an opportunity to gain experience in open source. You will work closely with an open-source community, solving real problems with high-quality documentation. Learn about open source and new technologies. Add will more skills to your resume. It can be a plus for you if you are already into technical writing.

💵 Paid - 2400 - 6600$ USD total internship stipend

gsod.png

5. Reinforcement Learning Open Source Fest

The Reinforcement Learning (RL) Open Source Fest is a global online program focused on introducing students to open source reinforcement learning programs and software development while working alongside researchers, data scientists, and engineers on the Real World Reinforcement Learning team at Microsoft Research NYC. Students will work on a four-month research programming project during their break from university (May-August 2021). Accepted students will receive a $10,000 USD stipend.

micro.jpg

These can be a great kickstart to your open source journey, I would also like to clarify that I don't favour the thing that you should only contribute to open source only if you are getting paid. Open Souce is like a family, so you need to maintain the decorum and work voluntarily, just enjoy OSS and contribute, paid opportunities are not far. If you will target only outreach, GSoC ..... You will fail in the end. And remember always mentors will choose a guy who is mixed but knows nothing over one who is arrogant but knows things. So behave properly and contribute as much as you can :)

Student software: the best free and paid-for student software in 2024

Do you have the right student software? Check our list of the best paid-for and free tools available today.

Student software: three students using laptops on lawn

Along with a computer, student software can be the most expensive purchase you make before starting college or university. That's especially the case if you're pursuing a creative discipline like photography, design, art, illustration or marketing. But the good news is that most software providers are keen to lure you in, and so provide some sort of student deal.

Note we say most, not all, though. Some tools are so established as the industry standard that its makers don't need to. Conversely, even with a discount, some student software may still be more expensive than cheaper equivalents. Don't miss our round up of the best student discounts , cheap school supplies and the best Apple Back to School deals available now for some really great savings.

To help you navigate your way through the maze that is student software, in this post we bring together some of the most important tools you may need as a student on a creative course, explain what they do, and how you can get hold of them. We'll start with paid-for student software, and then list the best free student software below that.

 • Jump to the best free student software

Student software: the best paid-for tools

Why you can trust Creative Bloq Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

01. Microsoft Office 365

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

When you become a student, everyone tells you that you'll have to work harder. But actually, it's more about working smarter. Which means you'll need productivity software to plan your activities and schedule, which includes features like a calendar, email, document editing, spreadsheets and more.

Microsoft Office 365 is a serious software package that's widely used across the business world, and as a student you can get a version of it, called Office 365 Education, for free. This includes Microsoft Word for documents, Microsoft Excel for spreadsheets, Microsoft PowerPoint for presentations, Microsoft OneNote for notetaking, and Microsoft Outlook for email.

Featuring Microsoft's most popular productivity apps, you can sign online, from any device, to organise your activities wherever you are. And best of all, you get a whopping 1TB of online storage.

02. Adobe Photoshop

So popular that it's even become a verb, Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard tool for image editing and manipulation, photo retouching, graphic design, web and app prototyping and 3D modelling. With that in mind, it's something that any student of photography, illustration, graphic design, digital art, web design or marketing will find useful.

Photoshop is available as a subscription, but there's no specific student discount. At the moment, the cheapest way to buy Photoshop is as part of the Creative Cloud Photography plan , which costs $9.99 / £9.98 per month and gives you access to Photoshop CC, Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic.

There is, however, a huge student discount on an all-apps subscription to the Creative Cloud , which gives you access to Photoshop as well as 50 other creative tools, for just $19.99 / £16.24 per month for the first year.

03. Affinity Photo

Affinity Photo is a tool for image editing and manipulation, photo retouching and graphic design that's squarely positioned as a cheaper competitor to Photoshop. This fully-loaded photo editor is integrated across macOS , Windows and iOS and while it doesn't have exactly the same features as Photoshop, it is increasingly respected within the creative industries and is subscription-free.

Even though there's no student discount, Affinity Photo's one-off cheap price ($49.99 / £48.99 for Mac or Windows; $19.99 / £19.99 for iOS) still makes it somewhat of a bargain. So if your area of study includes photography, graphic design or marketing, it's well worth investigating.

04. Adobe Illustrator

Used to create everything from small icons to full-blown illustrations, Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard for vector drawing software. Available for Mac and PC, with an iPad version on its way , it's your go-to app if you're studying art, illustration or design as a practitioner.

Adobe is currently offering a huge student discount on the Creative Cloud, which gives you access to Illustrator as well as 50 other creative apps, for just $19.99 / £16.24 per month for the first year; that's less than the cost of a subscription to Illustrator alone.

05. Affinity Designer

Want a vector graphics program that doesn't require a subscription? Affinity Designer , the sister app to Affinity Photo is a respected alternative to Illustrator for graphic design and illustration students, and boasts some unique features, including one million per cent zoom. Affinity Designer can be download for a one-off fee of $49.99 / £48.99 (Mac or Windows) or $19.99 / £19.99 (iOS). There's no student discount, but there is a 30-day free trial.

With a powerful and intuitive set of vector editing tools, Sketch has been the go-to tool for UI design amongst digital designers, interface designers and web designers for around a decade. And though it now has serious competition in the form of the free Adobe XD (see below), and it's still only available for Mac, anyone studying design will want to at least try it out.

Sketch usually costs $99.99 to download, but it also offers a free trial, free licences for educational institutions, and a 50% discount for students and teachers with valid ID and proof of eligibility.

07. Adobe InDesign

Adobe InDesign is the industry standard desktop publishing software for graphic designers. It's commonly used to create posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, presentations, books and ebooks, social media images and more, by marketing professionals and newspaper, magazine and book publishers. So it's a useful tool for anyone studying graphic design or marketing, particularly if you're interested in print publishing.

There's no student discount to subscribe to InDesign alone. So it's actually cheaper to subscribe to the Creative Cloud, which gives you access to InDesign as well as 50 other creative apps, for just $19.99 / £16.24 per month for the first year with a student discount.

08. Affinity Publisher

An upstart in the world of desktop publishing software, Affinity Publisher was launched last year and includes some powerful features including master pages, facing page spreads, grids, tables, advanced typography, text flow and full professional print output. The tool completes a trinity of interoperable tools aimed at designers and illustrators with Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. Like its sisters, there's no specific discount for students, but it is available for a low, one-off fee of $49.99 / £48.99.

If you’re aiming to work in the post-production end of the movie and TV industries after you graduate, you'll want to become familiar with the software that big VFX and animation studios like ILM, Pixar and Framestore use. And that's Autodesk's Maya , 3D software that comes with powerful modelling, rendering, simulation, texturing and animation tools. It doesn't come cheap but thankfully, there's a free version you can use as a student for one year, as long as you only use it for educational and not commercial projects. So why wouldn't you?

10. 3ds Max

The sister to Autodesk's Maya, 3DS Max is a powerful 3D modeling and animation software for 3D modelling, animation, rendering and visualisation. As such, it's a must-have for anyone studying game design, animation, VFX, architectural visualisation, or VR experiences. Again, students can download it for free for use in their studies, as long as the work you produce is not commercially exploited. Also make sure you check out our 3ds Max tutorials .

11. Cinema 4D

Cinema 4D is a professional 3D software package with a relatively small learning curve, a lively user community and a wealth of Cinema 4D tutorials online, making it popular with motion graphics and animation students. Students can get a free Education Licence for Cinema 4D, as long as you can provide provide proof of enrollment, which may include a student ID, enrollment certificate, class schedule) or employment (teacher ID, proof of class schedule, valid employment verification).

12. Adobe After Effects

After Effects is the industry-standard software for motion graphics, compositing and VFX. Although it's occasionally used to create entire movies, it's more often used for more modest sequences such as TV show titles or animated commercials: exactly the sort of work graphic design and animation students are likely to be working on, in fact.

As with the other Adobe software on this list, there's no student discount on After Effects. But there is a huge 60-65% student discount on the Creative Cloud, which includes After Effects as well as 50 other creative apps, for just $19.99 / £16.24 per month for the first year.

13. Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe's Premiere Pro is one of the best video editing software packages on the market, with simple layout and range of impressive features. Used to create professional content for film, TV and the web, it supports 360 VR content, 4K and HDR video, and comes with some very useful collaboration features.

As with the other Adobe software on this list, there's no student discount on a Premiere Pro subscription. But you can making a big saving on the Creative Cloud all-apps subscription, which gives you access to Premiere Pro as well as 50 other creative apps, for just $19.99 / £16.24 per month for the first year.

14. Final Cut Pro X

Apple 's video editing software, Final Cut Pro X, combines video editing with powerful media organisation and impressive performance to let you create your content quickly and efficiently. As such it offers a robust alternative to Premiere Pro, above, that's subscription-free.

Optimised for macOS and the latest Mac hardware, it's a good option for anyone tied into Apple's ecosystem, although it's not actually available for Windows. Currently retailing at $299 / £299, there's no student discount on Final Cut Pro X, but there currently is a generous 90-day free trial.

01. google drive.

When it comes to organising your life, your work, your schedule and more as a student, Google Drive has pretty much everything you could need for free. It works on any device with an internet connection, as it's based in the browser, and includes a number of brilliant tools.

Google Docs is a very capable document editor, and can save your work in a variety of proprietary formats, including Microsoft Word and PDF. Google Sheets allows you to create spreadsheets, while Google Slides is there for your presentations. You can store up to 15GB of images, documents and other files for free. You can easily share all this with teachers and students you're collaborating with, and add comments in real time. And with Google's awe-inspiring search technology, you'll be able to find everything quickly and easily.

02 Adobe XD

If you're studying digital design or web design, you need to know about Adobe XD. Adobe's digital prototyping tool has two advantages over its main rival, Sketch. Firstly, it's available for Windows as well as Mac. And secondly, the basic version is free forever, with no commitment.

This starter version gives you unlimited local documents, access to a limited number of fonts and 2GB of cloud storage. And until October 2020, you will also get unlimited editors, unlimited shared documents and unlimited shared links. So it's really a no-brainer to download it and at least give it a try.

If you're taking design as your main area of study, you'll probably need to buy some professional software, such as Photoshop and Illustrator. But if you're studying a related discipline, such as marketing, and just need to do the odd bit of design work, then Canva is a free and very capable alternative. This browser-based app is easy to pick up and use, even if you don't have any design training, and can be used to make posters, flyers, social media images and more.

Even within the world of digital art, not a lot of people seem to know about Krita. Which is a shame, because this free and open source tool is among the best software for digital artists around. It's been purposely made by artists who want to see affordable art tools for everyone, and is suitable for creating concept art, texture and matte paintings, illustrations and comic art. Check out our list of the best Krita tutorials to learn more.

05. Premiere Rush

Filmmaking students will need something more powerful, like Premiere Pro. But if you need to do a spot of video editing as part of another course, then Adobe has a free alternative for you, in the shape of Premiere Rush.

This cross-platform tool has all the main tools and export settings of the paid-for app, and a simpler, intuitive layout that makes it much easier for non-techie students to pick up and use.

You're not a photography student, but you need to make some simple edits to an image as part of your course. Crop, resize, remove red-eye, that kind of thing. In that case, you don't want to bother with something as expensive and complex as Photoshop; there are plenty of free tools for doing basic tasks like that.

We like Pixlr best, as it's free, reliable, based in the browser, and has more than 600 effects, overlays and borders. Its user interface is easy to use, and there are also iOS and Android available. Alternatively, check out one of these Photoshop alternatives instead.

24. QuarkNet Summer Research Program

Application deadline: January 31, 2023

High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a strong interest in STEM have a unique opportunity to work with scientists on research projects during this paid seven-week program at the prestigious Fermilab, located near Batavia, IL, just outside of Chicago.

Interns are encouraged to express preferences for areas of research in which they have a particular interest, although research projects vary yearly based on the availability of projects ongoing at the lab. Fermilab’s particular areas of research are described on the lab’s website.

Required application materials include a questionnaire, a letter of recommendation, and an essay. To apply, students must have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status and must provide evidence of identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

Define your area of interest.

Before you start looking for opportunities, narrow your area of interest a bit, whether it’s cancer research, engineering, computer science, neuroscience, or something else. Also bear in mind that while there may be more STEM opportunities available for high school students, research isn’t limited to these fields—research is also a key component of social sciences, humanities, and other non-STEM fields.

While you should be somewhat specific about what you’re hoping to research, don’t narrow your scope so much that it’s impossible to find a valuable opportunity.

Talk to people in your immediate circle.

Teachers, neighbors, your family, parents of friends, friends of your parents—any of these people could know someone or know someone who knows someone with a research opportunity. Networking is often the key to finding career opportunities. The best opportunities aren’t always hosted by large universities or programs. Leveraging your network can help you uncover unique opportunities crowdsourced by the people who know you best.

Reach out to local institutions and laboratories.

In addition to networking with your immediate circle, reach out to local facilities, such as labs, hospitals, clinics, and universities that conduct research. Even if opportunities aren’t publicized, these institutions and laboratories may be willing to make room for you. Remember: when pitching your idea, don’t make it too niche—this will make it more difficult to find a fit and market your skills to labs.

Cast a wide net.

Research opportunities are hard to secure, especially when you’re a young student, so you need to be persistent. It may take a hundred emails, but if you put in the effort and cast a wide net, you’ll vastly improve your chances of landing that great opportunity.

Try not to be too picky, either. Of course, you shouldn’t just accept any offer , especially if it doesn’t appeal to you. But even if the opportunity doesn’t align perfectly with your skills and interests, it can still be a great chance to gain experience and make you a better candidate for future experiences.

Participating in research can influence your chances at college admission, but this depends on many factors, including the scope of the project, the prestige of the program or institution, your individual role and performance, the institution’s connections to or sponsorships by certain colleges, and even how much weight a college places on extracurricular activities in general.

There are four tiers of extracurricular activities that colleges think about when reviewing applicants’ activities. Selective, competitive, and prestigious activities are often found in the top tiers, Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 includes things such as being a highly recruited basketball player or an award-winning national science fair competitor. Tier 2 is similar, but is usually reserved for activities that are more common than those in Tier 1. Tiers 3 and 4 are reserved for more common extracurricular achievements, such as holding school leadership positions or being a member of a debate team.

Research usually falls into Tier 2, and some particularly prestigious opportunities could even be Tier 1. That’s because it’s somewhat unusual for high school students to conduct research in professional and collegiate settings, so it’s more likely to impress colleges than other kinds of extracurricular activities.

Best Open Source Programs For Students to Participate

Contributing to open source is a really great way to get real-world software development and other domain experience from the comfort of your home even if you’re a beginner and don’t have a job in the industry. You don’t really need to be an expert to get started with open source and you’re going to get all these benefits of what it’s like to work in a team, collaborate with other people and work on a large codebase. One can test their skills, gain knowledge, and bond with the community in order to produce quality code that helps people around the world.

Best-Open-Source-Programs-For-Students-to-Participate

Here, in this article, we’ll discuss various programs that are available for university students and even for working professionals to get involved in open source. So let’s get started.

1. Digital Ocean Hacktoberfest

Hacktoberfest is a really popular open-source program that is hosted by Digital Ocean and is open to everyone across the world. Here, you need to submit four or more quality pull requests and you’ll either get a chance to plant a tree or get a limited-edition t-shirt. The main idea over here is that there’s no such thing as a selection criterion in this particular program. So, this is very useful for individuals, in particular, who are just starting out with open source. You can contribute to participating projects on GitHub and even if you’re not able to make a large major contribution what you can get out of it is how to use Git and Github.

E.g. NJACK Winter of Code by Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, KWoC by Kharagpur Open Source Society, IIT Kharagpur (KOSS), BOSS – Bountiful Open Source Summer by Coding Blocks, etc.

You don’t need to wait for a particular program to start in order to contribute to open source. So it is not like when Google Summer of Code will open up applications that will be the only time you can contribute. If you know a particular tech stack you can start right NOW!! And most importantly, open-source is not something that you do for a stipend. You do it to make an impact, it should be your passion. True “open-source contributors” find the idea of creating value for people and impacting the world through their work gratifying.

Wolfram Alpha Dashboard

The education landscape has experienced a paradigm shift with the advent of digital tools. Amidst a plethora of online resources, Wolfram Alpha stands out as an unparalleled computational knowledge engine.

Designed to serve both students and professionals, it goes beyond simple search to offer answers to complex questions across multiple disciplines. Wolfram Alpha’s unique approach to online search is what sets it apart. Unlike traditional search engines that pull up web pages containing possible answers, Wolfram Alpha computes answers on the fly. This means students get direct and precise answers to specific questions, ranging from mathematical equations to historical data.

Whether you’re a history buff, a budding physicist, or a math enthusiast, Wolfram Alpha has you covered. It spans mathematics, science, engineering, geography, history, and music. Instead of just offering answers, Wolfram Alpha often provides additional information and related topics, encouraging students to explore further and satisfy their curiosity.

Wolfram Alpha is more than just a search engine. It’s a student’s companion in the journey of knowledge. Its computational prowess and extensive knowledge base ensure that students are not merely searching but truly understanding.

Wolfram Alpha’s best features

 • The engine understands natural language, which means students don’t need to phrase questions in a specific technical format
 • With dedicated apps for both iOS and Android, this virtual learning assistant is not confined to a desktop. Whether on a bus or in a cafe, students can have the vast computational power of Wolfram Alpha right in their pocket
 • Numbers and data come alive with Wolfram Alpha’s dynamic visualization capabilities. Graphs, charts, and other visual representations help students grasp complex concepts more intuitively.
 • For students grappling with math problems, Wolfram Alpha doesn’t just provide the answer but can also showcase a step-by-step breakdown of the solution, aiding in understanding and learning

Wolfram Alpha limitations

 • While Wolfram Alpha can handle a wide range of questions, there’s a learning curve involved in phrasing complex queries to get the desired result
 • It might not be the go-to tool for subjective topics, opinion-based questions, or areas that require human judgment
 • For highly specialized academic or research-based questions, the platform might sometimes provide a more generalized answer, which might not delve into the nuances a student or researcher might be looking for

Wolfram Alpha pricing

 • Basic: Free
 • Pro: $7.25/month per user
 • Pro Premium: $12/month per user

Top 13 BCA Project Ideas & Topics For Students in 2024

Top 13 BCA Project Ideas & Topics For Students in 2024

As a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) student, one of the essential aspects of the curriculum is completing a project that showcases their expertise and knowledge in the field of computer science. The BCA final year project topics enable students to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical use and demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving skills.

Enroll for the Machine Learning Course from the World’s top Universities. Earn Masters, Executive PGP, or Advanced Certificate Programs to fast-track your career.

This article will explore the top 13 project ideas for BCA students. However, if you are a BCA fresher, these can also be an exceptional starting point to enhance your skills.

How to Choose a Project Topic in Computer Science?

Choosing a major project for BCA final year is a critical decision that can influence your academic and professional journey. Whether you’re a student working on a class project, a researcher exploring new avenues, or a developer building a portfolio, selecting the right topic is essential for success. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you make an informed decision.

Ads of upGrad blog

Identify Your Interests and Strengths

Start by assessing your interests and strengths. What areas of computer science fascinate you the most? Are you more inclined towards software development, artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, networking, or something else? Consider your existing knowledge and skills – tackling a topic you’re comfortable with can boost your confidence and productivity.

Narrow Down the Scope

Computer science is vast, so narrowing your focus is important. Instead of choosing a broad topic like “machine learning,” consider a specific subtopic, such as “image classification using convolutional neural networks.” A narrower scope allows you to delve deeper into the subject and produce a more impactful project.

Stay Updated with Trends

Keep yourself informed about the latest trends and advancements in computer science. Follow conferences, journals, and online communities to discover emerging technologies and research areas. Projects related to current trends showcase your relevance and provide opportunities for collaboration and networking.

Research Existing Work

Before finalizing BCA project topics, research existing projects and literature. This helps you understand what has already been done, identify gaps in knowledge, and refine your project idea. Building upon existing work with innovative twists can lead to unique and valuable contributions.

Consider Practicality

While ambitious projects are exciting, ensure they are feasible given your available resources – time, expertise, and tools. A practical project that you can complete successfully is more valuable than an overly ambitious one left incomplete.

Address Real-World Problems

Solving real-world problems adds a sense of purpose to your project. Consider how your project can address challenges in sectors like healthcare, education, environment, or business. Projects with practical applications tend to be more impactful and attractive to potential employers or collaborators.

Consult with Professors or Mentors

If you’re a student, consult your professors or mentors for guidance. They can provide insights into relevant research areas, suggest potential project topics, and help you refine your ideas. Their experience can help you avoid common pitfalls and ensure your project is on the right track.

Balance Challenge and Familiarity

While you should choose a topic that challenges you, don’t go too far beyond your comfort zone. Striking a balance between learning something new and leveraging your existing skills ensures you can progress steadily without getting overwhelmed.

Brainstorm and Evaluate

Brainstorm a list of potential project topics. For each idea, evaluate its significance, feasibility, potential impact, and personal interest. Create a matrix or scoring system to compare and rank these ideas objectively.

Plan for Long-Term Engagement

Consider how your project can lead to future opportunities. Will it open doors for further research, career growth, or skill development? A project with the potential for long-term engagement can be more rewarding in the grand scheme.

Stay Adaptable

As you dive into your chosen project, be open to adjustments. Your initial plan may evolve as you gain deeper insights into the topic. Flexibility is key to accommodating unexpected challenges and opportunities.

Selecting a project topic in computer science needs careful consideration of the learner’s interests, skills, practicality, relevance, and long-term goals. It’s a decision that can shape your academic and professional trajectory, so invest time in researching, brainstorming, and consulting with mentors. Remember that choosing a topic is as important as the topic itself, as it sets the stage for a successful and fulfilling project experience.

Opinion Why not pay teachers $100,000 a year?

paid projects for students

Adam DiPerna always had to hold it in.

As a Spanish teacher at Gerald G. Huesken Middle School in Lancaster, Pa., he’d arrive in his classroom at 7:10 a.m. each day and cannonball into a morning that left no time for a bathroom break. He’d teach back-to-back-to-back-to-back classes until his lunch period, 27 minutes during which he also had to heat and eat the food he’d brought from home, email parents about problems and absences, and field questions from students. After school, he coached wrestling, advised the student council and chaired the GHMS world language department. Work, from grading papers to preparing lessons, spilled into the evenings and weekends he wanted to spend with his wife and three kids.

For his efforts, DiPerna — with a Bucknell University diploma and a master’s degree in education — earned less than any college graduate he knew. So, last year, after a decade and a half in the classroom, he quit teaching to take a job as a sales representative at a large packaging company, trading a life of conjugated verbs for a new life of corrugated cardboard. “I wanted to be a public servant,” DiPerna, 42, told me. “I did not get into teaching to make a lot of money. But I also didn’t get into it to barely scrape by.”

He earned more in his first partial year as a paper salesman than in his 15th year as a top-rated teacher. “I get paid more money,” he said. “And I can listen to the call of nature.”

DiPerna’s gain is America’s loss. Four years after the onset of the pandemic, students across the country are still struggling. Test scores are falling . Absenteeism is rising . Meanwhile, about 44 percent of U.S. schools face a teacher shortage.

If we’re serious about hanging on to capable educators, and attracting new ones, we should start treating them like true professionals. And one place to begin is compensation.

Why not pay America’s teachers a minimum salary of $100,000 a year?

The average annual salary for public school teachers during 2021-2022 was $66,397 , according to the National Center for Education Statistics, a nearly 8 percent pay cut, in inflation-adjusted terms, from a decade ago. Salary isn’t the only reason educators exit the profession. But whether they work in suburban New York or rural Mississippi, teachers earn significantly less than they could in other fields.

The Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank, calls this difference the “ teacher pay penalty .” EPI calculated that , in 2022, teachers earned only 74 cents on the dollar compared with comparably educated professionals. The right-leaning Hoover Institution reached a similar conclusion in its 2020 report on educator compensation , showing that, even adjusting for factors such as talent and experience, “teachers are paid 22 percent less than they would be if they were in jobs in the U.S. economy outside of teaching.”

Nothing against actuaries ( median salary: $113,990 ), but isn’t helping a first-grader learn to read as valuable as assessing insurance premiums on your Hyundai Elantra?

The Why Not? Project

For all the education fads of the past 50 years, researchers have found that what matters most for student learning — more than reducing class size or handing out iPads — is a high-quality teacher . One study by Harvard University economist Raj Chetty and his colleagues determined that students with effective teachers in fourth grade were more likely to attend and graduate from college as young adults and to earn more than their peers during their careers.

Some states and localities have attempted to address the compensation problem with complicated pay-for-performance schemes that award teachers bonuses hinged on student test scores. The results of those efforts have been iffy at best , scandalous at worst , said Barbara Biasi, a labor economist at Yale University. But her research has found that raising base pay for effective teachers, a simpler solution, deepens student learning and keeps good teachers on the job. Higher base pay also reduces dropout rates and narrows the achievement gap between White and Black students, as well as White and Hispanic students, according to other studies.

Raising teacher pay is also the rare 2024 policy proposal whose support spans the ideological divide. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has introduced legislation requiring a federal minimum teacher salary of $60,000 per year . Tennessee, led by Republican Gov. Bill Lee and an overwhelmingly Republican legislature, last year approved a law raising minimum teacher salaries in the state to $50,000 by 2026 .

But those well-intentioned initiatives are “take two aspirin and call me in the morning” remedies. We need a defibrillator — a serious jolt to awaken the patient from a near-death experience. A $100,000 base salary would deliver that shock.

It would also jolt public budgets. Many ideas we’ll explore in this “Why Not?” project would save money. This one is pricey.

A back-of-the-envelope calculation: If it requires about $35,000 per teacher just to raise average pay to six figures, and the United States employs more than 3 million public school teachers, the total cost would be north of $100 billion. Are you feeling defibrillated?

Although that figure represents just 5½ weeks of Medicare spending or well under half the Pentagon’s weapons budget , it’s still a massive annual sum. The federal government, which supplies about 7 percent of K-12 funding , shouldn’t finance the whole cost. It could establish a matching program to share the burden — say, $50 billion from the federal pot, $50 billion from states and localities. But that $100 billion would also likely mean raising taxes. Biasi and other scholars I spoke with questioned whether taxpayers would be willing to foot the bill.

That’s why this hefty pay raise comes with two strings attached.

First, a longer school year. Eliminating summer break might spark a national uprising among 8-year-olds and tourism-industry executives. But the nine-month school year is a relic. (Not many kids in Anacostia or Bethesda spend July tending the soybean crop and preparing for harvest.) Professionals work year-round. Teachers should, too. A longer school year could also reduce summer learning loss.

Second, greater accountability. Many teachers are excellent; some are heroic. But any parent knows that a few just aren’t up to the job. Under current employment arrangements, it’s difficult to steer these underperformers out of the profession. And with pay based largely on seniority, mediocre teachers lack much incentive to depart or even to improve. Low-performing, less-committed peers erode the morale of the majority of teachers who do their jobs well. Treating all teachers like professionals means showing a few teachers the door.

One mark of a winning idea is that it offers something for everyone to hate.

Higher taxes would enrage conservatives. Reduced job security for public employees would infuriate liberals. So far, so good!

Your ideas on education

But many complicated issues remain to be worked out. How should we adjust for differences in cost of living? How would the pay scale evolve? What are the fairest ways to evaluate teachers?

Yet even skeptical economists have a soft spot for a radical increase in teacher pay. That’s because “it calls attention to a real and pressing problem,” said Michael Addonizio, emeritus professor of education policy at Wayne State University.

Biasi, the Yale professor, a mother of two toddlers, told me, “As a parent, it strikes me as a good idea. It seems like a good use of money.”

And perhaps it would encourage talented college graduates to consider teaching instead of banking — and keep all-star educators like DiPerna in the classroom.

“I wasn’t looking to make a fortune,” DiPerna told me from his basement office between sales calls. “One hundred thousand dollars? That would have been enough for me.”
