- How Therapists Would Change <i>Love Is Blind</i>
How Therapists Would Change Love Is Blind
S ince premiering on Netflix four years ago, Love Is Blind has produced eight marriages, two soon-to-be babies, a couple of divorces, too many messy breakups to tally, and dozens of hours of entertainingâoccasionally appallingâreality television.
On Feb. 14, the showâs sixth season starts streaming, this time set in Charlotte, N.C. Hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey will once again guide a group of people eager to find loveâand/or social-media followersâthrough a dating scenario designed to determine if love really is blind. After getting to know each other through a wall in small isolation rooms called pods for about 10 days , participants get engaged without ever having seen each other, and then spend a month living together before meeting at the altar to commit or break it off.
If you already know all this because you canât look away, youâre in good company: Relationship therapists also love Love Is Blind , and not because theyâre scouting for future clients. âItâs just fascinating to see how people connect and relate when they donât know the external context around financial status and looks and all the things that factor into how you judge a person,â says Julia Baum, a therapist based in New York whoâs watched every episode. âItâs really neat, especially when you see people who you wouldnât expect to connect in the pods.â
That said, there are plenty of ways the show could improve. We asked therapists what they would change about Love Is Blind if they were showrunners for a day.
The casting should branch out
Contestants on Love Is Blind donât know what the people theyâre dating look likeâbut they can reasonably guess that theyâll like what they see. The show has notoriously cast conventionally attractive people with little body diversity.
Ideally, casting would diversify in numerous ways, says Nicole Hind, a couples therapist based in Australia. For one thing, age: Many people on the show are in their 20s or early 30s. What about a season featuring singles 40 and older?
She also urges producers to bring on contestants who donât fit into a certain appearance mold, including those who have a disability or a heavier body weight. And it would make things more interesting if various sexualities were featured. What if Love Is Blind featured openly bisexual, asexual, or pansexual people? Hind suspects it would be a hit: âThis is one of the reasons people watch reality TV,â she says. âTo see a window into othersââor to have their own identities reflected back at them in some way.
Let the contestants touch each other
Love might be blindâbut sight is only one of five senses. To spice things up, Michelle Herzog, a relationship therapist in Chicago, suggests tapping into a few of the others. Imagine if blindfolded contestants could hold hands with or otherwise touch the person they were considering marrying. âI think it would be really impactful in helping people decide between two people,â she says. âPhysical touch releases a hormone called oxytocin , which is nicknamed the bonding hormone. It promotes closeness, connection, and intimacy, and can fuel feelings of attachment.â
And letâs not overlook smell : A freshly worn T-shirt could be waiting in the pods for someoneâs potential matchâproviding a sense of their cologne or perfume, for example. Catching a whiff could help participants âlearn more about this person, outside of words,â Herzog says.
Warn contestants of red flags
Johana Jimenez, a therapist based in Addison, Texas, wants contestants to know important details about who theyâre dating through the wall. During the first three dates, each person should enter the pods to find a letter that reveals one green flag, or positive attribute, about the contestant theyâre getting to know. âIt could be education or income or an entrepreneurial spirit or that they love to singââsome other tidbit that producers suspect the personâs potential fiancĂ© would appreciate, she says.
After three dates, as the relationship became more serious, producers would start delivering red flags to the pods, but this time, the envelopes would disclose deal-breakers that the producers had discovered during the casting process. In season five, for example, Stacy Snyder might have been informed of Izzy Zapataâs bad credit score, which she was frustrated to learn about weeks after leaving the pods and ultimately contributed to their breakup. âSometimes contestants don't bring up things that are crucial for the other person to know,â Jimenez says. âAnd I know it makes for good drama, but people are getting their hearts broken.â
Let the games begin
Love Is Blind tends to skip the games and challenges that are core to other reality shows. But thatâs a missed opportunity, says Amy Morin, a psychotherapist based in Marathon, Fla. Solving problems or tasks together, or competing against each otherâlike Love Island contestants doâcould be insightful. âYou would get to see somebodyâs true character. Are they trying to cheat to get ahead? Are they super competitive? Do they not really care? Itâs not just about what they say, but about what they do, and how they do it.â
Give them therapy (and let us watch)
Aside from the showâs celebrity hosts, contestants are essentially left to their own devices to figure out who to get engaged to, how to navigate the inevitable conflict that arises, and whether they should get married. Maybe she's biased, but that sort of stress calls for an on-screen therapist, says Stephanie Yates-Anyabwile, a marriage and family therapist based in Decatur, Ga., who posts Love Is Blind reaction videos on YouTube .
Ideally, a therapist would hang out in the lounges where contestants gather with other participants of the same sex when theyâre not on pod dates, helping them work through their emotions from the day. A cast member could say, ââHey, I'm having a hard time choosing between two people,ââ Yates-Anyabwile notes.
Therapists could also supply contestants with a list of questions to ask their potential spouse, says Luree Benjamin, a marriage and family therapist in Henderson, N.C. For example: What are their doâs and donâts when it comes to anger? âIs shouting and slamming doors allowed? Is walking out?â she asks. âHow long do you stay disconnected from one another?â It would also be smart to explore how the other person feels about social mediaâand the extent to which their post-show lives would be broadcast to new followers.
Let them phone home
The pod environment is âvery much like a pressure cooker,â says Mickey Atkins, a therapist based in Tucson, Ariz., who posts YouTube videos about the show. âFrom a mental-health perspective, itâs disappointing to see people be isolated from their family and friends and normal support system,â she adds. Not being able to process their decision verbally with someone they trust, she believes, is one of the reasons many couples donât last. To address that, the show could implement a phone booth in which contestants could call home. That way, instead of feeling cut off from comfort and familiarity, they could ground themselves by checking in with a loved one.
More women should propose
Women rarely propose on Love Is Blind , though the showâs creator has said in the past that itâs allowed. In an ideal world, women would account for at least half the proposals, says Baum, the New York therapist. âThe assumption that women on the show are 'ladies in waiting' is toxic,â she says. âI think it would be better for viewers to have that normalized: a woman can take that initiative.â In addition to helping shatter archaic norms, Baum points out, imagine the insights that could be gleaned about a future partner. If a man is offended that his grand moment was stolen, maybe heâs not such a catch.
Bring a third-party advocate on set
Past Love Is Blind contestants have spoken out about the way cast members are treated during filming, and at least three have filed lawsuits for reasons including sexual harassment and even false imprisonment. To ensure future contestants arenât exploited or harmed, psychotherapist Kirk Honda envisions a third-party advocate whoâs always on set. This person, he says, would operate similar to the intimacy coordinators who have become standard in Hollywood. âThese are hired individuals who have power and can step in and say no,â says Honda, who hosts the Psychology In Seattle podcast and YouTube channel , and often posts Love Is Blind reaction videos. âOr theyâll pull aside cast and say, âHow are you? Does this feel OK?ââ Such a change would also help viewers feel better about tuning into sometimes-unethical reality TV.
Limit the alcohol
The golden goblets featured on Love Is Blind get more screen time than some of the contestants. Alcohol appears to flow heavilyâand past participants have alleged they were encouraged to drink. Atkins has an idea: moderation. Cast members could be limited to a certain number of drinks each day, or urged to abstain. âSober people make better decisions about their lifelong legal and financial entanglements,â she says. With marriage on the line, in a highly unconventional situation, contestants would do well to be as clear-minded as possible.
Focus more on the love story
Reality TV doesnât always reflect reality. If Honda were in charge of Love Is Blind , heâd be more truthful in the edit. In season four, for example, Jackie Bonds was portrayed as rekindling with former suitor Josh Demas before breaking things off with fiancĂ© Marshall Glaze. The alleged infidelity prompted outrage among fansâbut as the stars later confirmed, events were shown out of order. The two had already split . âWhen we learn that lies are occurring, it loses all of its power and appeal as a ârealityâ TV show,â Honda says.
Yates-Anyabwile seconds that notion: She would rework the show by focusing more on the love stories, and less on manufactured drama. âI think weâve come to believe that drama brings in numbers,â she says. âBut itâs becoming too muchâyou start losing interest and engagement after a certain point.â

Climate-affected Madagascar adapts to new reality: A UN Resident Coordinator blog
Facebook Twitter Print Email
People living in Madagascar are learning to adapt to rapidly altering climatic conditions in what is said to be the fourth most climate change affected country worldwide; thatâs according to the UNÂ Resident Coordinator , the most senior UN official in the Indian Ocean island nation.
As Issa Sanogo nears the end of his posting in the capital Antananarivo, he sat down with UN News to reflect on the progress the country and its citizens have made in responding to the climate crisis.
âRecently, I met a woman farmer in the small town of Betroka, in Anosy region one of the areas in southern Madagascar which has been facing a humanitarian emergency due to drought.Â
Itâs a challenging place in which to live at the best of times having suffered from years of underdevelopment and insecurity.
She had attended a farming school supported by the World Food Programme ( WFP ) and AMC, a local NGO, after which she told me how she is committed to trying new ways to grow the staple crop, cassava. She is using a compost basket which has had an incredible and immediate impact.Â
The increasingly dry and harsh conditions have meant that until recently each plant had only produced about four kilogrammes of the root crop. But now, with the changes she has made, her 100 or so plants are producing 20kg each, which is two tonnes, a surprising harvest on such arid land.
New opportunities
Her family has access to more nutritious food and she is able to sell what she has left over to pay for childrenâs education and the familyâs health care needs.
This is just one example of how Malagasy people are adapting to the new reality of climate change, but there are many others.
In Behara and Ifotaka communities, to the south of Anosy region, like elsewhere access to water is a critical issue and a key programmatic entry point for what the UN is calling a Convergence Zones approach, which brings UN agencies together to leverage their expertise and improve outcomes.Â
The UNâs Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO ) has introduced climate-smart practices to promote drought-resistant seeds such as sorghum and peanut and Californian drop-by-drop irrigation systems using solar pumps.
In Ifotaka the Rapid Rural Transformation project introduced by WFP provides the community with a solar-powered hub supplying electricity and digital access to the community school and other social structures.Â
In addition, it is providing entrepreneurial opportunities and creating employment for the youth, with support from the UNâs International Fund for Agricultural Development ( IFAD ).Â
UNICEF supports access to water by building solar-powered water pumps and water kiosks, providing potable water for daily use, and reducing incidence of diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases, and malnutrition.Â
Climate vulnerability
Madagascar is the fourth most vulnerable country in the world to climate change. It is recurrently hit by droughts and cyclones that are increasing in frequency, duration and intensity due to climate change. These effects mainly impact the south and south-east of the country.
When I arrived in Madagascar in late 2020, the country was facing its most serious drought in 40 years. Widespread hunger - called kere - was pushing communities into near famine-like conditions.Â
During my recent field visits to the south, I noticed how arid the land is despite the beneficial effect of extra rain due to cyclones in 2023.
Households are very dependent on rain-fed agriculture, making them more vulnerable to these increasingly unstable weather conditions.
With drought, crops not only suffer from a lack of water but are also affected by the red sandstorms that destroy the plants and blow away the fertile topsoil. In these conditions, communities struggle to grow key staples and their food insecurity and malnutrition increase, with women often carrying most of the burden.Â
Building resilience
However, I firmly believe that preventing future crises and accelerating recovery from the effects of repetitive climate shocks requires more than emergency assistance.Â
Building the resilience of individuals, communities, and institutions to the effects of droughts and cyclones, including through climate change adaptation, is the only sustainable solution.Â
A good and simple example is the cash-for-work programme implemented by the UN Development Programme ( UNDP ), through which community members obtained an income for planting sisal along the coast.Â
The sisal helps to lessen the windâs damaging impact on crops and retains soil moisture, stabilizing coastal sand dunes and providing protection for crops normally affected by the red sandstorms. As a result, communities are now able to grow cash crops in fields which were once lost to the sand.
UN collaboration
The UN is now working through a more integrated approach to bring more sustainable solutions to mitigate and prevent hunger and the poverty in the south.Â
Over the last three years, we have focused on building resilience to ease the worst effects of future droughts and reduce humanitarian needs in the long term.Â
As a result of these integrated interventions, we have started to see an improvement in the daily life of the local communities. The next step is to scale up this work across the south.
We aim to move collectively, beyond short-term supply-driven response efforts, to demand-driven results that can reduce people's risks, needs, and vulnerabilities
The Malagasy Government, along with the UN and technical and financial partners, have recognized the importance of refocusing on the people at the heart of the recurrent crises in these regions.
We aim to move collectively, beyond short-term supply-driven response efforts, to demand-driven results that can reduce people's risks, needs, and vulnerabilities.
However, the situation remains fragile and the current El Niño phenomenon creates significant risk of renewed deterioration of the situation.Â
To support 2.3 million people in need of assistance, we recently revised our Flash Appeal to consider its potential impact.
About $39 million out of $162 million that has been requested is for anticipatory actions.
Madagascar has been selected as one of the 30 countries in the UN Secretary-Generalâs Early Warnings for All Initiative . The countryâs action plan for 2024â2027 was the first to be completed globally and was launched in Dubai during COP28 in December 2023.Â
This brought significant visibility to Madagascarâs effort and helped sensitize partners to support our prevention work and the need for funding.
The plan aims to provide access to early warning systems to everyone in the country by 2027. This is an essential element for reducing humanitarian need and the cost of responses in the long term, and ultimately for progress towards the realization of the 2030 Agenda .Â
As I prepare to leave Madagascar, I remain optimistic that with the right support the most vulnerable communities will be able to realize their hopes for a better life for all people, one based on peace, security and prosperity.

The New Reality of Digital Nomads
- Giana M. Eckhardt
- Aleksandrina Atanasova
Research identifies three major trends that are shaping behavior among this group, with implications for brands.
Digital nomadism has been on the rise, but the implications of this trend go far beyond post-pandemic location flexibility and remote work. A cultural shift is taking place in developed countries that sees swaths of people becoming disillusioned with the lure of the “good life” available to prior generations. Digital nomadism offers an alternative path away from expensive, long-term mortgages and a raft of possessions and instead opens the door for people to maximize their income by living in countries with low costs of living. Amid all of this change, the implications for brand strategy and consumers are not yet well understood. The authors’ research identified three major trends that are reshaping consumer behavior and that present significant opportunities for brands: The end of rootedness and need for flexibility; the need for new infrastructures and services that cater to nomadic living; and the possibility of shaping the discourse around new values and lifestyles.
Digital nomadism â a lifestyle where one leverages remote work to travel and live in varying, often affordable locations around the world â has been steadily on the rise, attracting not only tech-savvy workers, but everyone from families with children to retirees. In one survey, over 17 million American workers identified as digital nomads, an increase of 131% from 2019 , and they included workers from a wide array of professions. This rise has also been fueled by the ease of obtaining digital nomad visas in many countries, post-pandemic.
