Learn how to draw a panda.

The rounded shapes and unique facial features of panda bears make for a fun drawing activity. Learn how in this step-by-step drawing tutorial.

Realistic drawing of a panda lying down

Mouse ears, monochrome and bamboo.

Pandas are excellent models for drawing and cartooning thanks to their distinct black-and-white appearance. From cartoon panda bears to realistic baby pandas, learning to draw animals like these rare, beautiful bears is a great way to practise sketching foundational anatomical shapes and developing them into a more complex, nuanced form.

Find a good reference panda.

A great place to start your drawing practice is to locate good reference. If you don’t have the ability to view a realistic panda at a nearby zoo, illustrations and photographs are the best references. If you’re looking for something three-dimensional, find a toy or a model to use.

Reference photo of pandas eating in a tree

A mistake many beginning artists make is being very rigid about the use of their references. The point is not just to trace or try to perfectly capture the reference, but rather to create a mental image or framework for what you’re trying to draw. It’s similar to learning the guitar: First you reference chords and, over time, they are baked into your muscle memory. You want the features of your reference material to be stored in your mental library.

But where to find a good reference? Adobe Stock is an excellent resource to start with. You’ll be able to find thousands of reference pandas within the Stock library. From there, select the heart icon to save the images you want and then pull them from your Adobe Creative Cloud to your Adobe Fresco canvas, where you can superimpose the image in the background to assist with your drawing.

Start with the basic shapes.

When you build a sketched framework of a panda, like many drawing activities, you’ll realise there are common themes and features in your reference materials. With pandas, it’s circles. Lots of them.

Steps of drawing a cartoon panda face, from wireframe to final drawing

Start with the head.

The head is where the fun begins. Draw some circles, the first one for the head and then a couple of small circles for the ears. Give the head circle a little bit of taper. “For pandas, their heads are typically tapered from the top. That’s because they carry most of the weight in their face at the bottom of their head,” says artist Chioma Iloegbunam.

Add that small amount of taper to help you to practise incorporating weight into a drawing. Plus, it’s part of what gives pandas their signature look.

Wireframe steps of drawing a cartoon panda

Move to the body.

Time for more circles. Depending on the pose you want your panda to take, make a large oval and connect it to the head from various angles to determine its posture. This will also give you the opportunity to take the drawing in a photorealistic or in a more cartoonish direction. If you want a cartoon panda, a big oval underneath the head will make your panda look like it’s sitting. Place it more to the side to create a side profile.

Wireframe drawing of a cartoon panda next to a finished cartoon panda drawing

Add in the legs.

The legs are the last part of the sketch, which for some might be the most difficult part. The legs need to be drawn to match the head and body shapes. But, generally speaking, panda legs are going to have a more teardrop shape. Sketch these in different positions on your panda’s torso until you get the proportions and positions right. Once you have your basic pose and body shape, you’re ready to refine.

Refine with Fresco techniques.

With your initial sketch complete, you’re now ready to add detail to your panda. The beauty of the digital medium is that you can use layering to refine your drawings. Layers are like transparent pieces of paper that you can draw on and stack in various configurations. Your sketch in Fresco is likely on a single layer and you can add as many layers on top of it as you need to get your drawing where you want it. Suggestions for layers include one for linework, one for detail, one for base colours and one for shadows. But you can create as many or as few as needed to enhance your creative process and then remove any layers you don’t want in your final piece.

Create a layer.

Press the “+” button to create a layer in Fresco. The new layer will automatically be created on top of all of the others, so you can start drawing. Feel free to adjust the position of the layer in a way that makes sense to you.

Reference photo of a panda in Adobe Fresco

Opacity and detail refinements.

Lower the opacity settings to make your original sketch appear fainter in the background so you can draw your detail refinements over it. Use the Layer Properties menu to adjust the opacity to a level you want to work with and use as a guide.

For detail work, Fresco gives you a large suite of tools for your linework and detail refinement. The pencil tools can be a great way to add fur along the exterior of your panda shapes (try the Rough Pencil brush) or use the Watercolour or Oil live brushes to add heavy or lighter flourishes to the lines of your panda.

Reference photo of a panda in Adobe Fresco

Finally, add colours to your panda. Pandas are mostly monochromatic, meaning that you’re going to be working with black, white and shades of grey. (While not closely related to the giant panda, seek out a reference of a red panda if illustrating the reddish-brown fur of this cat-sized creature is your aim.)

And don’t mistake the use of monochrome for lack of detail. Plenty of nuances and textures can be added. “In the white areas, use a light warm grey and then in the black areas use a medium-toned, cooler grey,” artist Terryl Whitlatch suggests. “It will give a nice contrast in the final result.”

Whether you’re trying to draw a giant panda, a cute panda or another four-legged animal , Fresco can be a powerful tool to help you to build your drawing skills.

An Introduction to the Panda

These large black and white bears are native to the high mountains and thick bamboo forests of the center of China. Although their favorite meal is undoubtedly luscious bamboo shoots, pandas are, in fact, omnivores. Sometimes pandas will eat small fish or animals, but up to 99% of their diet is fulfilled by bamboo. It may not come as a surprise that pandas eat a lot of food. For up to 12 hours a day, pandas can be eating.

Cute Panda Drawing

When they are born, baby pandas are only around 15 cms in length and they are light pink. Despite their tiny beginnings, many giant pandas grow to be between 1.2 and 1.5 meters tall. Towards the end of their 30-year lives, pandas can weigh a hefty 135 kgs. Now that you know a little more about these big furry friends, let us try to create our own.

Step-By-Step Instructions on How to Draw a Panda

Now you know some things about pandas, so it’s time to start working on our panda drawing! You will be guided step-by-step through all stages of the drawing process.

Step 1: Laying the Foundations for the Body

Often the most intimidating part of drawing an animal is trying to get the proportions and shape of the body right. We find that the best way to ensure that you have the right proportions is to begin by using different shapes. Now, it might seem strange to begin a panda illustration with a square, but as we get further into the tutorial, you will see how well it works.

This square will represent the lower half of your panda’s body, and the size of your square will determine the overall size of your panda. Remember to leave space all around the square, for all the other parts of your panda’s body.

aPanda Drawing Step 01

Step 2: Constructing the Face

Sticking to our foundational shapes, we are going to outline the shape of the panda’s face with a large round circle. It is important that we get the right proportion between the head and the body in this step. You can see in our demonstration that the head is roughly the same size as the body. In this position, we are going to have the head of the panda leaning to one side, so you can see that we are drawing the circle on the right side of the square. If you want to, you can draw this in reverse, this is where your artistic freedom comes into play.

aPanda Drawing Step 02

Step 3: Constructing the Legs

Now that we have the two largest two elements of our panda’s body planned out, it is time to lay down the smaller limbs. We begin with the bottom legs. Our little panda is leaning to the side, and this position translates into the legs too. The leg to our left is slightly closer towards us and as a result, it is slightly larger than the other. You will also see that both of the legs, as represented by elongated ovals, are the same shape and are in the same position relative to the square. Be careful of how far up your body your panda’s legs sit. You do not want the legs to sit above the midway line.

Panda Drawing Step 03

Step 4: Constructing the Arms

This next step is very similar to the previous one. It is in this step, however, that you will be able to see our little friend come to life. The ovals we use for the arms are exactly the same shape as those we used for the legs. The right arm is going to be exactly the same size as the right leg, and you can place it just above it, between the leg and the head. The right arm and leg should look as if they are reflecting themselves exactly. The left arm is going to be slightly bigger than the left leg, but the same shape.

In terms of the placement for the left arm, you want it to be at a slight angle with the very bottom sitting on the top of the square. You also want to position the left arm so that it slightly overlaps with the head. This position will create a perspective with the arm just in front of part of the face. At the end of this step, your drawing should look something like this.

Panda Drawing Step 04

Step 5: Constructing the Details in the Face

At this stage, we have the biggest parts of our panda laid down. Now it is time to start focussing on the smaller details in the face. Begin by constructing the midline of the face. Draw this line right through the circle at this angle. Once you have your face midline, you are going to draw a few more lines to structure the face. The first will be perpendicular to the midline and stretch from the top of the intersection between the arm and the face, and pass through the very top right corner of the body square. Slightly below this line, draw two more that are closer to each other than they are to the first. These lines are going to help us place the eyes and the nose of our panda. For reference, you can take a look at this drawing.

Panda Drawing Step 05

Step 6: Adding the Ears on Top

Out of all the steps so far, this is probably the easiest. All you need to do here is draw two little oval shapes on either side of the face midline. Depending on your personal preference, you can make these ears as big or small as you like. You do need to be careful about making the ears too big, or else your panda may begin to look like a different animal altogether.

Panda Drawing Step 06

Step 7: Drawing the Eyes and the Nose

Once you have finished this step, you will be able to see your little panda coming to life. Using the first angled construction lines, draw a circle at the center of each side of the face. These two circles will represent the eyes of our panda. On the very center of the second construction line, you can now draw a very tiny little oval. This small oval is the little nose.

Panda Drawing Step 07

Step 8: Fleshing Out Our Panda’s Face

We have finally got all of our construction lines down, so we can come to the exciting part. Now we can start to breathe life into our little panda, beginning with the face. Pandas are furry creatures, so we can begin to show this by drawing little hairs around the eyes. It is a good idea to draw the fur outwards in a circular pattern as this helps to add some depth and dimension.

You can now begin to draw a second furry circle inside each of the eyes. Again, you can draw a third smaller circle within the second. This third circle will not have any fur on it because it is the eyeball. Finally, you can draw the iris of the eye with the smallest circle. Try to position this smaller circle to one side of each eye, as you can see in our example.

Tip: Remember to always draw fur going outwards, and when drawing fur around anything circular like an eye this should be fur going outwards in a somewhat circular pattern.

Now you can draw the little half-moon-shaped nose on the second construction line in the face. From the center facial line, just above the third construction line, you can draw two half-moon lines that extend just beyond the edges of the nose. You can add a final half-moon line to join the ends of each of these lines, creating a smiling mouth. For added cuteness, you can pop two small half-moons on each end, to create little dimples.

Panda Drawing Step 08

Step 9: Fluffing Out Your Panda

Now that we have the face outlined, it is time to turn our squares, oblongs, and circles into the body of a panda. Using small strokes to create a fur-like line, begin to join together the different limbs. Begin to draw lightly, so that you can erase any mistakes easily. Begin with the head, outlining the circle and the ears with these fluffy strokes. Now, beginning from the intersection between the head and the left arm, outline the arm with these fluffy strokes to outline the arm, until you almost reach the bottom of the oblong.

From the bottom of the face midline, trace a curved line that crosses the top of the square and dips down just before the corner. You can then fill in the line between the bottom of the arm and this point, and continue down to the top of the oval. Use your intuition to create the body of your panda using the construction lines as a basis.

Tip: Do not follow the construction shapes, all you need to do is use them to give you a general idea of the shape to follow.

Add more detail to the nose by drawing a second half-moon within the nose itself. And adding a tongue within the mouth with a simple connecting line. On both paws add somewhat triangle shapes at the top (3 on each paw) which will act as the claws. Do the same for the legs and add a paw shape print on each leg try to make these face inverted directions so it looks like the legs are split. When you are happy with your shape, you can erase your construction lines.

aPanda Drawing Step 09

Step 10: Shading

Your panda is almost complete! All that we are missing now is its distinctive black and white coloring and a touch of texture. In this step start by drawing small detail strokes of fur all around the face going outwards. It is important not to add too many strokes here, as this part of your panda is supposed to be white. You can do the same on the little round belly of the panda which is also white. This technique is to give the illusion that the panda has fur and is not blank.

On the face, you can start to darken the ears and the inner eye circles by drawing many short fluffy strokes. Rather than simply shading these areas black, the fluffy strokes help to create the texture of fur. You can color the bottom of the nose and the corners of the mouth dark black to make them pop, and also place a few small dots underneath the nose.

Finally, you can continue to shade the rest of the panda’s body with these fluffy strokes, leaving the paws and claws pure white. At the end of this step, your panda should look something like this!

Panda Drawing Step 10

Step 11: Enhancing the Light Shadows

Panda Drawing Step 11

Now that we have come to the end of our tutorial, we hope that you have your very own cute panda drawing. You will have seen how easy it is to turn simple shapes into a fully fleshed-out panda. Once you have the basics down, you can alter the position of the panda and create more complex compositions. We hope you have enjoyed this tutorial, and wish you the best of luck with your future drawing endeavors!

And we’ll keep things as easy and fun as we can. Because creating art should be an enjoyable experience.

Art Supplies

  • Thin black marker
  • Paper or cardstock
  • Click Eraser , Pink Pearl Eraser
  • White Gelly Roll pen

Cute Panda Sketch Practice

Starting with some quick sketches is a really good way to warm up your drawing muscles. It’s also a good way to work through some rough ideas and learn more about your subject matter.

And it only takes a few minutes to do. This is how you do a cute panda sketch practice exercise.

  • Get some paper and something to sketch with
  • Pull up some reference photos
  • Set a timer for three or five minutes

Then sketch as many pandas as you can before the timer goes off.

Panda-Sketch

You could also just do as many quick sketches as you can until your paper is filled.

Either way is fine. Just be sure to make loose, quick sketches. You don’t need to worry about a bunch of small details.

Simply focus on the shapes and proportions of a panda bear. And work through any ideas you might have.

You’ll be amazed by how much you can learn in just a few minutes.

We have another tutorial that shows more about the benefits of doing Warm Up Exercises if you want to learn more.

How to Draw a Panda Step by Step

As we mentioned earlier, learning how to draw a panda is easy and fun. We’re going to show you step by step how to break things down into simple shapes and make your panda bear look cute.

But I’m pretty sure they’re just cute in general.

Like usual, we’re going to start with some basic shapes and guidelines. Begin by drawing a circle for the head.

How-to-Draw-a-Panda-with-Shapes

You can add some lines to help with the placement of the eyes, nose, and mouth. But this step is completely optional.

drawing ideas panda

Let’s start with drawing the nose. There are some different ways you could do this. It could be round, oval shaped, or a triangular shape like I drew mine.

drawing ideas panda

Draw a short line coming down from the center of the nose, then draw the mouth at the bottom of that line.

drawing ideas panda

To draw the panda’s eyes, start by drawing the patches that are around the eyes. Try to keep them symmetrical, but don’t stress too much about them being perfect.

drawing ideas panda

Next, draw the shape of the eyes. The bigger you draw the eyes, the cuter your panda bear will look.

How-to-Draw-a-Panda-Eyes

Now add the iris and pupils for the eyes.

The next step is to draw out the shape of the head. Again, there are a lot of different ways you can do this. You could make an oval or circle for your overall head shape. Or, you can give it more curves and details like I did here.

How-to-Draw-a-Panda-Head

Finish up drawing your panda’s head by adding the ears.

drawing ideas panda

Now add his body to your drawing so you don’t have a floating head.

Panda-Drawing

Cute Panda Outline

After you’ve finished drawing your cute panda, you can add an outline to it. To make your panda outline just trace over your pencil lines with a black pen or marker.

Panda-Outline

You can make your lines thin, thick, or a combination of the two. Or you can make your outline a different color other than black.

How you choose to make your outline will depend on your personal style. Don’t worry if you’re not sure what that is yet. It will develop over time with some practice.

Just keep making your artwork and try different things to see what you like or don’t like.

After you finish outlining your panda drawing, use an eraser to clean it up and remove the pencil lines.

How to Draw a Panda with Markers

Are you ready to learn how to draw a panda with markers? Learning to color with markers isn’t as difficult as people think.

But there are a few things that you should keep in mind.

First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.

Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.

Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.

Even though a panda bear is mostly black and white, you don’t want to use just black and white. This would look boring and flat.

For the areas that are black, you can add some gray to it. Or you could add some color like blue or purple.

How-to-Draw-a-Panda-with-Markers

The same thing can be done for the white areas. In real life things aren’t just pure white. They reflect the objects around them.

Don’t be afraid to play around with the colors a little bit.

White highlights can be added with a white Gelly Roll pen .

Final Thoughts and Next Steps

Now that you know how to draw a cute panda bear what’s the next step? If you want to improve your drawings, you need to make more of them.

You just drew a cute panda bear, so try doing something more realistic. Or maybe an abstract panda bear. You could also just do more that are similar to the first one you drew.

Have fun and experiment with different ideas and see what you can come up with. Try doing a series of panda drawings and see how much your creativity improves.

How To Draw a Panda: 10 Easy Drawing Projects

How to Draw the Panda From Turning Red

Today is the day to learn how to draw a panda . The cute black and white bear can be drawn in many styles, so choosing a style is your first step.

How To Draw a Panda

After you choose the type and art style, you can start drawing your panda. Just remember to add personality. You may not learn to draw the perfect panda overnight, but in time, you’ll be drawing this friendly bear everywhere.

Tips For Drawing A Panda

  • Red or black/white – red pandas are becoming popular; feel free to make a red one instead of the classic giant panda.
  • Make it cute – pandas are notorious for being cute. Your panda can be anything you want it to be, but cute is the common cliche.
  • Bamboo is an accurate cliche – pandas survive almost entirely on bamboo. So add some for a splash of color.
  • Downward-facing eye patches – the panda’s eye patches aren’t circles, they face down like a sad bloodhound’s eyes.
  • Black on the chest – the panda’s arms and legs are black, but so is part of its chest. Make sure the black wraps around like a cropped top.
  • Don’t shade too dark – only crevices should have 6B shading. Everything else will look better with 4B.
  • Get creative – pandas are a good animal to draw if you want to add a whimsical touch to your art.

Realistic pandas are hard to draw. But once you learn the step-by-step process of drawing a realistic panda, you’ll be able to do it without following a tutorial.

  • Blending stump

Step 1: Draw a Circle and Cross

When drawing a realistic panda, start with a circle and add the cross, which should decide which way the face is facing.

Step 2: Draw Mouth Circle and Ears

Next, draw a circle in the center bottom of the cross and then add two ears peeking out in the northwest and northeast corners of the head.

Step 3: Draw Three Body Circles

Draw one circle that is partially covered by the head. Then another to the left that is out in the open. Connect the two with a circle that is behind them.

Step 4: Draw Leg Lines

Now, draw simple leg lines. The panda should be walking, so make one of the front legs stick out and the other point back slightly.

Step 5: Draw Eyes and Nose

Time to start getting into the details. Draw two eyes above the snout circle. Then, a nose should be on the lower end of the snout circle.

Step 6: Add Fur

Add a furry edge to everything you’ve drawn thus far. The legs will need to be beefed up with toes added with the fur lines.

Step 7: Define Black and White

After you draw the fur lines along the outside, add faint lines where the black should be. Leave the rest white.

Step 8: Shade and Blend

Start shading by using your 4B pencil where there is black and the 2B where the shadows hit. The 6B should only be sued for extra dark areas like the inside of the ears and pupils.

Are Pandas Hard To Draw?

Conclusion

Panda bears are special to many people. So if you’re a professional artist – or hope to be – you may find yourself with panda commissions. But even if you don’t, it’s always a useful skill to be able to draw anything.

Introducing the Giant Panda

Panda bears are omnivorous creatures who enjoy catching the occasional fish and chomping all day on the juicy bamboo shoots found in their forest home – approximately 26 to 84 pounds each day! Their native home is right in the middle of Southern China, where they are thought to be a national treasure. You might never expect it from the way their bodies are built, but these bears are amazing tree climbers!

Baby panda bears are only 1/900th the size of their mother, born about 6 inches long. They grow exponentially from there and end up being about four or five feet tall! Their mothers can weigh up to 196 pounds and their male counterparts can be up to 308 pounds. They also have a lifespan of about 30 years or so.

Instructions on How to Draw a Panda

This comic panda drawing tutorial is not only suitable for kids, but also for adults. We made sure that each step is as detailed and easy as possible to guarantee a perfect drawing result at the end. So let’s start.

Step 1: Constructing the Body

If you have been following our other tutorials, you might be aware that most of them start with an oval shape as the body’s construction line. This time, however, for a panda bear, we will begin with a square. Do not turn up your nose at the square – all will be revealed in the end! If you want to get a better picture of it in your mind, the bottom half of the torso will fit into the square, thus defining the size of your panda in the end.

Make sure that your square is near the bottom of the page so that there is space to add in the panda’s limbs.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 01

Step 2: Constructing the Face

Your next construction shape will be a circle for the outline of the panda’s face. The circle must be slightly bigger than the square and it should cross over the top-right corner of it. This is because the panda you are drawing has its head hanging on its side. Of course, you also have the artistic freedom to switch it around and make the circle cross over the top-left corner of the square. Whatever your preference, your picture should look like our example below once the first and second steps are done.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 02

Step 3: Construction of the Legs

With the construction shapes of the head and the body of the panda complete, we can begin to add in the limbs. This step will focus on the construction lines for the bottom legs. This panda drawing is more cartoon-like than lifelike, and since it is leaning to the right, this will affect how the legs appear proportionately and dimensionally. The leg on the right is further back than the one on the left, which means that it must be drawn slightly smaller to show the depth.

The construction shapes for the legs are ovals that are slightly longer than usual, both of which must lean to the left.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 03

Step 4: Construction of the Arms

This next step is very similar to the previous one. The difference here, however, is that you will now be able to see our little friend come to life.

In terms of the placement for the left arm, you want it to be at a slight angle, with the very bottom sitting on the top of the square. You also want to position the left arm so that it slightly overlaps with the head. This position will create a perspective with the arm just in front of part of the face. At the end of this step, your drawing should look something like this.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 04

This step will start to reveal what our cute little panda will look like when you are done.

You will be adding two more ovals for the arm’s construction shapes. The first arm must add is an elongated oval, about the same length as the diameter of the head’s circle. The oval must start from the top-left corner of the square and then overlap with the circle for the head. The second arm’s construction oval will be much smaller in size – similar to the second leg’s oval size.

Step 5: Construction of the Face

With the limbs reaching out and the body situated, we can begin to add the construction shapes and lines into the head’s circle for the detailing of the face. Your first step is to draw one solid line right through the center of the circle, starting from the point where the circle crosses over the top of the square and pointing up through where you would imagine two o’clock might be. This is the halfway divider for the face.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 05

The second set of construction lines for the face are a set of three lines running parallel to each other, making up the proportion lines for the nose and the mouth. The first of the three lines is for the nose, and it should start from where the top part of the upper arm and the head’s circle cross over, running down to the top right corner of the square. Leave a space and draw another parallel line, and then one more line parallel to that  – the gap between the third and second line should be slightly smaller than the gap between the second and third line.

Step 6: Constructing the Ears

This is a fairly simple step. All that is required is to add two short, little ovals. Using the halfway line for the face as a guide, place each construction oval for the ears on either side. Make use of our example below as a reference for how big the ear’s ovals should be – take heed not to make them too large or your panda will look odd.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 06

Step 7: Construction of the Eyes and the Nose

When you want to start with the construction of the details of the face, it is a good idea to start with the nose. The nose is easy to place – simply find the intersection where the middle of the three parallel lines crosses over with the halfway line of the face. Add a tiny oval there, facing the same direction as the parallel lines. For the eyes, you must add circles.

Because you are busy with a cute cartoon-like panda drawing, the circles for the eyes should be a bit larger than you might initially think.

Each eye must sit on either side of the halfway line for the face. The eye on the left-hand side of the halfway line should stop just before the middle of the three parallel lines, and the eye on the right should stop just slightly before the top eye.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 07

Step 8: Fleshing Out Our Panda’s Face

Your cute panda drawing is now ready for some substance. This is one of the more fun parts of your drawing expedition. As you can see from our example below, we have outlined the eyes using short, sketch-like pencil strokes. This is done to achieve a look of furriness.

A tip to make the fur seem legit is to make sure that you draw the strokes for the fur going outwards like the sun’s rays.

You can then move on to the eye’s details by adding a circle (to represent the iris) inside the main circle for the eye. Inside the iris you just drew, you can add the pupil, and inside the pupil, you can add another circle – this will be the white speck in the eye that shows how the eye glistens.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 08

For the nose, you will use the left-hand side of the nose’s construction oval as the base and turn the oval into a crescent moon, but slightly thicker. Where the halfway line meets the bottom of the crescent moon, draw a line coming down and looping back up on each side of the halfway line. This is similar to drawing a very basic cat cartoon face. You can connect these two lines with another curved line, which forms the panda’s smile.

Do not forget to accentuate the cuteness of the panda by bringing out its cheeks. You can start by adding a small, slightly curved line resting against each point of the panda bear’s smile.

Step 9: Adding Fluff to Your Panda

From the bottom of the midline of the face, trace a curved line that crosses the top of the square and dips down just before the corner. You can then fill in the line between the bottom of the arm and this point, and continue down to the top of the oval. Use your intuition to create the body of your panda using the construction lines as a basis. The aim of this is to draw the outline of the panda’s body by drawing short, sketch-like strokes to represent the fur that the panda is covered with, much like what you did for the eyes in the previous step.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 09

Starting with the head, draw out the sketch-like pencil strokes for the fur, following the circumference of the circle. When you add the ears, the same pencil strokes must be used, as the ears are also furry. These should be curved lines, cupping the top of the panda’s head and leaving out the bottom of the ear’s construction oval. To make the nose seem more detailed, you can add another skinnier crescent moon inside the one that is already there.

You can use our example to understand how the tongue should look inside the mouth.

Now that there is a little bit of life within the panda bear’s face, you can start to do the same with the rest of the body, moving on to the rest of the outline. For the arm on the left of the face, you must leave out the right-hand side of the arm’s construction oval. This will give the appearance that the arm is slightly behind the panda’s head.

Step 10: Detailing

Now that your panda’s outline is perfectly proportioned, you can use your eraser to remove the construction lines and shapes. You can then add in some detailing lines to show the ruffles in the panda’s furry coat and the contrasting black and white colors that this animal is so well known for.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 10

Start by using the same short, sketch-like strokes on the face, but going outwards this time, as we suggested for the eye’s fur lines. These lines will represent the furry detail of the panda’s face. Your next step is to add the black patches of fur that surround the eyes. The furry ring you drew in earlier is waiting for you to color it in black, where the sketch-like lines already signal the fur, making this step much easier for you.

For the body, you must add the same detailing, using sketch-like lines to represent the fur on the panda’s body.

Make sure that these lines run in a downwards direction to show that the fur does the same. The belly of the panda should be left white, including the fur’s detailing. The arms and the legs of the panda, however, must be colored in black. In order to achieve the fur effect, you can use a white pencil to etch in the sketch-like strokes.

Step 11: Highlights and Shadows

This eleventh stage is not entirely necessary, but it will add a different element to the final drawing. If you use our example below as a reference, you will see that we have added some shadows to the sides of each eye – you can do this too! Additionally, there is some shading to the bottom of the head – presumably the chin. We also followed this pattern and shaded around the edges of the belly to give it a bit more dimension.

Cute Panda Drawing Step 11

This is probably one of the cutest drawing tutorials we have offered yet. We hope that you are feeling more rested and in a better mood after experiencing the satisfaction of completing such a lighthearted drawing. This is perfect to draw for any of your children or nieces and nephews when they start demanding your art skills at the next family barbeque.

With this Quickdraw guide you can learn to draw panda bears easily. The video tutorial and written art guide walk you through sketching and colouring pands step by step. And don't forget your art materials and stationery - pencils, pens and a marker. You can also find more children's drawing ideas for animals on the Quickdraw YouTube channel - check it out today!

Art materials needed:

A plain sketchpad to draw on, a sharp pencil to draw with, an eraser to rub out messy lines, a black marker pen to go over pencil lines, and a bunch of colouring pencils or felt tip pens to add a splash of colour!

Drawing a panda bear waving

Step 1: drawing a panda standing up.

Nǐ hǎo boys and girls. That’s hello in Chinese.

One of China’s most iconic animals is the panda bear. And today you’ll learn how to draw, not one, not two, but three panda bears.

Pencil cases open. Pick up a pencil, eraser and a black marker pen.

Our first panda bear is going to be standing up and waving.

A nice circle for the head, with some guidelines inside to mark out the face.

One small triangle for our panda’s nose.

Now for the eyes. Draw two sloppy blobs, they don’t have to be perfectly round.

Under the nose, the panda’s mouth, which is made up of two curved lines.

Two small circles inside the eyes. Hey, they look like fried eggs!

Now a pair of semi circle ears on top of the head like this.

Hmmm. maybe a tongue poking out of our panda’s mouth.

Let’s sketch out the body now. A plump circle like a plum or beach ball.

A top line and bottom line across the belly.

Next, a short, stumpy pair of legs like wellington boots.

We’ll draw the first arm now, down by one side.

The other arm will be waving, so this will point in an upward direction.

Alright, time for some colouring in.

A quick tip guys
so the outer layer of the eyes is always black, and those smaller circles inside are white. You can add an even tinier black dot in the middle for the panda’s pupils.

The ears and nose should also be coloured black.

And for the body, leave that plump belly white, and all those other bits - arms, legs and bottom can be coloured in black.

Drawing a panda bear climbing a tree

Now guys, if you want some more panda art fun let’s try one climbing a tree.

We’ll be repeating the same steps as before starting with the panda’s head.

Make a circle. A triangle nose. Fried egg eyes. A double curve smile. Semi circle ears.

Now for that tree. Think of it as a thick pipe or pole.

We want to show that our panda is hugging this tree so we need a curved line for its arm like this.

Then join that arm and shoulder back up to the head.

Next, the white belly.

Here’s a leg. A short egg shape that overlaps the tree trunk.

Back up for the second arm. A small semi circle inside the tree trunk like so.

Then we take that line outside the tree, downwards.

Finally, a small semi circle poking out behind the tree for the other leg.

Oh, and if you want to add some extra detail, how about a leaf or two? Panda’s eat those all day long.

Colouring time again, guys!

Take your black marker and trace over the outside lines.

Careful with that tree - the idea is to only show the parts of the tree that are behind the panda climbing it.

Oh wow, that’s awesome drawing.

Drawing a panda bear sleeping

And lastly, let’s learn how to draw a sleepy panda having a nap on the ground.

Circle for the head. But a weird, half blob for the body - flat against the floor.

A front flipper for the arms. And a curvy thick shape for the back leg.

Then we’ll mark out lines for our panda’s belly and tail.

For our little friendly, furry guys face we can draw the nose, eyes and ears at a different angle. Because the panda’s face is closer to the floor, remember?

Ok, our last colouring stint for this art tutorial
 ready?

A quick tip for you, folks
if your panda is sleeping then all of its eye shape can be black because the eyes are closed.

For the rest of the body, follow our black and white rules.

Yeah, we are about done! What a super cool set of panda friends. Well done.

Oh, a line of sleeping zed’s to finish off.

Thanks for stopping by - see you next time!
