1. Use Classroom Greetings

1 – formal greetings in a classroom.

Traditionally in Chinese primary schools and secondary schools , students and teachers greet each other formally at the beginning and end of a class. As soon as the teacher enters the classroom, a student whose role is 班长 (bānzhǎng) “class leader” orders the whole class to stand up and greet the teacher in chorus. Although it might not be this formal in your Mandarin Chinese class, it’s good to know what these phrases mean!

Usually, the greetings at the beginning of the class go in the order below:

  • 班长:起立! Bānzhǎng: Qǐlì! “Class leader: Stand up!”
  • 全班同学:老师好! Quán bān tóngxué: Lǎoshī hǎo! “Whole class: Hello, teacher! ”

At the end of a class, the greetings are similar:

Note: in this article  ➢ marks teacher phrases • marks student phrases

2 – Informal Greetings on Campus

Nowadays, more and more schools choose not to adopt the rigid formal classroom greetings shown above. Instead, the teacher gets right to teaching without greetings or very informal greetings . However, outside a classroom on the school campus, students are still expected to greet their teachers to show respect. When it comes to students greeting each other, it gets casual.

Here are some scenarios of informal greetings between a student and a teacher, and between two students.

Scenario #1: 夏雨 (Xià Yǔ) “Yu Xia,” a student sees his teacher 刘老师 (Liú lǎoshī) “Teacher Liu” in the hallway before the first bell rings.

Scenario #2: 夏雨 (Xià Yǔ) Yu Xia sees his teacher 刘老师 (Liú lǎoshī) Mr. Liu while waiting on the bus to go home.

Scenario #3: 夏雨 (Xià Yǔ) “Yu Xia” walks in the classroom while her friend and classmate 王明一 (Wáng Míngyī) “Mingyi Wang” is finishing up his homework.

Boy Frustrated with Homework

  • 夏雨: 早啊!赶作业呢? Xià Yǔ: Zǎo a! Gǎn zuòyè ne? “Yu Xia: Morning! Still working on your homework?”
  • 王明一: 嗯。还有一页。 Wáng Míngyī: En. Háiyǒu yí yè. “Mingyi Wang: Yeah. One more page to go.”

Scenario #4: 夏雨 (Xià Yǔ) “Yu Xia” says goodbye to 王明一 (Wáng Míngyī) “Mingyi Wang” as she gets off the bus.

  • 夏雨: 我走了。明天见。 Xià yǔ: Wǒ zǒule. Míngtiān jiàn. “Yu Xia: I’m leaving now. See you tomorrow.”
  • 王明一: 拜拜! Wáng Míngyī: Báibái! “Mingyi Wang: Byebye!”

2. Understand Instructions from Teachers

Teachers play a key role in learning. Knowledge and skills are delivered by teachers through their instructions. There is nothing more important than understanding the teacher and following his or her instructions. In this section, we’ll take a close look at command phrases teachers are most likely to use in a class.

Female Asian Teacher

1 – Instructions and Commands

2 – questions and check-ins, 3 – comments and feedback, 3. ask questions to teachers and classmates.

It’s okay to not understand Chinese classroom phrases , all you have to do is to ask! Here are some useful phrases to ask questions to your Chinese teachers and classmates.

  • Chengdu introduces two-week holiday homework grace period

give homework in chinese

As the new school semester gets underway, viral videos on Chinese social media have shown students across the nation scrambling to finish last-minute homework, sparking discussion and policy changes aimed at reducing academic pressure.

Videos titled "Creating a miracle overnight" depict children facing massive workloads with hours remaining before deadlines. Parents appear alongside, offering sarcastic but gentle support as their children race against the clock.

Even the official account of the Beijing Public Security Bureau joined the conversation, jokingly offering assistance in finding "lost" homework, a common excuse used by students who fail to complete their assignments.

Many adult netizens commented that the video reminded them of themselves as students and they had been in exactly the same situation years ago because all the homework would be left until the last few days before due dates.

The phenomenon prompted a novel response from authorities in Chengdu, Sichuan province: a homework grace period during the first two weeks of the spring semester. The measure extends assignment deadlines and prohibits exams, allowing students to adjust smoothly from winter vacation back to academics.

Schools should pay special attention to students' emotional issues caused by stressful academic tasks and parent-child conflict amid the transition, the notice said.

Families are expected to guide students to gradually adjust their daily routines to embrace the new semester, while schools will prepare for educational activities to start the school year, it said.

Students are encouraged to increase physical activity time and reduce the use of entertainment devices such as smartphones, it added.

Similar grace periods were previously implemented in Hefei, Anhui province, and Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.

Although they can address students' anxiety about failing to submit assignments on time, some expressed concern that they offer an escape route for playful and lazy students.

Ye Jinfu, an official with the education bureau in Kaihua county, Zhejiang, said some students are capable of completing holiday assignments on time but may gradually develop bad habits such as procrastination due to the policy.

In addition, the combination of holiday homework and new assignments during the period will also add to students' burdens, Ye said in an article commenting on the approach.

"Rather than implementing a homework grace period, it would be more effective to carry out motivational measures that compel students to have a reasonable schedule during holidays, which not only fosters good study habits but also cultivates students' self-discipline," Ye said.

Customer Reviews

Our Professional Writers Are Our Pride

EssayService boasts its wide writer catalog. Our writers have various fields of study, starting with physics and ending with history. Therefore we are able to tackle a wide range of assignments coming our way, starting with the short ones such as reviews and ending with challenging tasks such as thesis papers. If you want real professionals some of which are current university professors to write your essays at an adequate price, you've come to the right place! Hiring essay writers online as a newcomer might not be the easiest thing to do. Being cautious here is important, as you don't want to end up paying money to someone who is hiring people with poor knowledge from third-world countries. You get low-quality work, company owners become financial moguls, and those working for such an essay writing service are practically enduring intellectual slavery. Our writing service, on the other hand, gives you a chance to work with a professional paper writer. We employ only native English speakers. But having good English isn't the only skill needed to ace papers, right? Therefore we require each and every paper writer to have a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D., along with 3+ years of experience in academic writing. If the paper writer ticks these boxes, they get mock tasks, and only with their perfect completion do they proceed to the interview process.

Norman B. Gildin

A multitude of donation requests from nonprofits typically take place during the holiday season. For many organizations, 70% of their revenue comes in during the last two or three months of the year. Still, don’t be surprised if you check your daily mail (emails and postal mail) now, well after the holidays, and find that many worthy causes urgently need support more than ever.

According to Giving USA 2023’s “Annual Philanthropy Report 2022,” individuals, bequests, foundations and corporations donated $499.33 billion to U.S. charities in 2022. We are wonderful people who are charitable and kind. This enormous generosity, however, can also lead to abuse.

Frank Abagnale, a former con artist and best-selling author, published a fascinating book, “Scam Me If You Can.” Leonardo DiCaprio stars in “Catch Me If You Can,” a movie based on the “scamploits” (my word) of Abagnale. In his book, he describes charity scams and how to avoid them, especially when charity appeals are abundant. It’s worth a read.

Let the donor beware

Doubtless, most of us are familiar with the email that promises an enormous fortune from a Nigerian prince. You need only mail the prince, or his charity, a sum of money to redeem your riches. There are still many people who fall for this scam, believe it or not. Some people cannot resist the lure — hook, line and sinker. What a shame.

Then there are telemarketers asking for donations to the local boys’ or girls’ club. Sometimes, telemarketers request your sponsorship for the local police benevolent association or another honest-sounding organization. Some are legitimate; others aren’t. Sadly, the naïve among us ante up generous donations without due diligence. This is like pouring hard-earned money into a bottomless pit.

From time to time, disaster relief appeals also relieve you of well-intended, but stolen, gifts. Earthquakes in Turkey, tsunamis in Japan, wars in the Middle East, and the list runs on. Watching images from these areas wrenches our hearts, and we empty our wallets to support counterfeit pleas. These situations provide an ideal opportunity for evil doers to set up bogus charities to entrap unsuspecting people.

In today’s technological age, many philanthropists fall victim to misleading tactics and contribute to nonexistent charities. Despicable individuals often set up GoFundMe accounts, Facebook pages or websites. On a GoFundMe page, a couple raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for a “so-called” homeless veteran a few years ago. These scofflaws pocketed the money. Luckily, they were all charged with theft and conspiracy to commit thievery by deception, according to the authorities.

The internet is not the only platform for fraud. Beware of in-person, slick miscreants claiming to represent charities, but without a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. To create a nonprofit organization, IRS guidelines require certain steps. In addition, a charity must register in the state where it solicits funds, and sham charities do not.

Authentic eleemosynary institutions rely on your generosity, and they lose out because of crooks who defraud the innocent. You may ask: Is there any way to protect yourself from fraudsters?

Here are some common-sense steps compiled by the AARP . It’s not an exhaustive list, but it’s worth considering.

  • Do not give in to pressure to make a gift right away. Charities that are legitimate welcome donations at any time.
  • Avoid letters asking you to renew your gift that include a return envelope for a donation you did not make. Charlatans target the naïve and gullible.
  • There are very few charities that give 100% of their donations to services. You should be skeptical of such a claim.
  • Verify a charity’s legitimacy with nonprofit watchdogs, such as Charity Navigator, GuideStar, and the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance.
  • Examine the charity’s track record — make sure it lives up to its promises.
  • Beware of charities with similar website names to real charities.
  • Never divulge personal information such as your birth date, Social Security number or bank account numbers. These are high risk for misuse.
  • Contribute by credit card or check. There are safeguards built into them.
  • Never assume that requests on social media are legitimate.
  • Use caution when clicking on links. These can release harmful viruses or malware that steal your private financial information and even hold you hostage until you consent to their perverse demands.

A final note of caution

Unethical and predatory offenders often exploit emergency situations for nefarious purposes. Criminals manipulate artificial intelligence to produce fake videos, pictures and stories. People of all educational levels can be deceived into contributing to nonexistent charity websites. Don’t dump your hard-earned money in a sinkhole. Unless you can vouch for the charity, investigate it first. The last thing we want is people holding back and not giving to those truly in need. So, when you donate, I ask you, do you want to help victims or become one?

Death Valley is alive and well.

During a normal year, tourists stream into the sun-scorched Badwater Basin area of Southern California’s Death Valley National Park to see what it feels like to be at the lowest point in North America.

The answer is that it’s hot, very hot, sometimes hotter than anyplace else on earth .

Sinking to 282 feet below sea level, Badwater also happens to be one of the driest places in the United States.

But not in 2024.

After the West Coast experienced a rare hurricane last summer, followed by a string of heavy rains this winter , Badwater is living up to its name, drawing kayakers, swimmers, paddle boarders and gawkers.

A person drags a paddle board as tourists walk in water at Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park.

They’re all here to play in the the massive lake that’s temporarily taking up space where bone dry salt flats were only recently the main attraction.

“I said to myself, ‘Oh my god, this is incredible,'” visitor Patrick Donnelly of the Center for Biological Diversity told the BBC of the rare change in the landscape.

“[Death Valley] is the hottest, driest place in North America, and all of a sudden, it literally has billions of gallons of water. It has been completely transformed,” he said.

The basin is named for the ancient lake that once existed here. The area, a main draw to California’s Mojave Desert , receives just 2 inches of rain each year; local temperatures typically ensure that the moisture evaporates almost before it lands.

During the last six months however, the area has taken on a whopping 5 inches of wet, resulting in the six-mile-long, three-mile wide, pristine body of water about 1 foot deep that’s now luring lookie-loos from all over.

People walking in water on a flooded desert in Death Valley National Park, on a sunny day.

The phenomenon hasn’t occurred for a number of years, said Elyscia Letterman of the National Park Service. And, she cautions, it won’t last for long.

“It’s evaporating rapidly,” Letterman told a reporter. “We’re not sure how long it will stick around, but it is disappearing.” .

But for the time being, a trip to rugged Death Valley feels more like a day at the beach .

People walk in water at Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park, the lowest point in North America, following a rare flood.

“It’s quite beautiful, especially at sunrise and sunset when you have these beautiful reflections from the mountains around the lake,” Letterman said. “There’s some snow on the mountaintops. So, the reflection of the snow-capped mountains on the water is very beautiful.”

“It doesn’t feel like you’re in Death Valley,” she said.

Donnelly, who lives in nearby Nevada, said he’s looking to make the most of the time with the lake — before it disappears.

“This is something I want to experience as much as I can,” he said. “It’s likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
