Palm oil production is one of the major sources of income for Nigerians. In 2021, it was estimated that 1,280 thousand metric tonnes of palm oil were produced in Nigeria. This shows the immensity of the production of palm oil in the nation. Infact, Nigeria is one of the five nations, leading in the production of palm oil in the world.

Palm oil production has to do with the extraction of edible oil from the mesocarp of the palm fruit, which is suitable for human consumption and is used in making various kinds of products and things.

Palm oil was one of the major sources of income for the Nigerian government in times past, before the discovery of crude oil. However, it is being focused on again, as the government is now investing a lot to revive that sector of the economy.

Overview of Palm Oil Processing

The Palm tree is important, as many things can be derived from it, to be used by humans. To start with, palm fruits can be used to get palm oil, the stems can be made into woods for building, palm wine can also be tapped from palm trees as a form of refreshment, etc.

Now, Palm oil is gotten from palm fruits and there is an extraction process that takes place before the oil is gotten from the mesocarp of the palm fruit. The Palm fruits seedlings are planted, and after they have been harvested, the bunches of the palm fruit are threshed and sterilized, to get the palm fruits from them.

Afterwards, the palm fruits are crushed, to extract the crude palm oil. This crude palm oil is then purified and dried before it can be put to use at home, in industries, etc. It can also be exported to other nations for exchange in international trades.

Requirements Needed To Start Palm Oil Business

In starting a palm oil business, there are many things required to be acquired to attain success. Some of them are as follows;

  • Capital:

Capital refers to the money used in starting the palm oil business, which would be used in purchasing the facilities needed to kickstart.

Firstly, you need to purchase the land where you would plant palm oil seedlings. This could range from many acres to some hectares. It is important to get a large portion of land, to help you plant as many trees as possible.

You would also need capital to hire workers to work on the land, from the planting stage to the harvesting and transportation stage.

Some equipment and materials such as tractors, fertilizer, etc also need to be purchased to aid the planting process.

  • Land:

After securing the capital for the business, the next thing is to make the purchase of the land for the palm oil plantation. When buying the land for the plantation, it is important that the quality of the soil is examined, to ascertain that it would be suitable to grow palm trees.

Now, If you are unable to determine the fertility of the soil by yourself, you can hire experts to do this for you. This is important, to ensure growth for the palm trees after planting.

Another key thing to consider when purchasing the land for your palm oil plantation is the closeness of the land to your buyers. This would make it easy to transport your palm fruits to customers, as at the due, without hassle.

Another requirement for your palm oil business is the labour that would be needed in planting, harvesting, and transporting the produce of the farmland.

You would need to employ extra hands to assist you in the work, and you would have to pay them.

  • Storage:

Another requirement for the palm oil business is the storage facilities needed to store and keep the palm fruits and palm oil, after being extracted and purified.

Storage facilities are very important for the palm oil business, to preserve the palm oil got, from the extraction mill. This is also important to protect them from getting spoiled before they get to their buyers.

  • Transportation:

Another requirement for a palm oil business is the transportation facilities needed to transport your equipment, palm fruits, palm oil, etc to and from your palm oil plantation.

You could get trucks to help you transport things to and fro the plantation.

  • Suppliers/Retailers:

Getting reliable suppliers to supply you with the needed equipment, palm fruit seedlings, and other things is also a key requirement to consider when starting your palm oil business.

Getting retailers who would buy directly from you to supply to consumers is also important, to ensure the smooth transfer of palm oil from your plantation to customers, in exchange for money.

Production season of palm oil:

The production season of palm oil differs from nation to nation. However, in Nigeria, the best time to plant palm fruit is during the rainy season, which is usually around June-September.

This is recommended so that the roots of the trees would have been well-rooted in the ground before the dry season comes in.

Now, an oil palm starts to produce about 3 to 4 years after it has been planted. So, patience is required as a palm oil businessman or woman. It is also important to not relent during this waiting period, as one would be required to tend the plant from time to. time, by removing weeds, and doing other things to enhance growth.

Where to get palm seedling for planting:

Just like for every other tree, to grow palm nuts, you need to first get the seedlings to plant. And this is the cheapest way because palm trees are rarely grown through cutting, layering, and other asexual means.

You can either get them from the seed pods of flowering palms or buy them. And these palm seeds differ in size. While some are small and bright red, some others are very large.

Now, if you would like to get your seeds from your tree, it is advisable to get them immediately when they fall from the tree; showing that they are ripe. It is also important to use these seeds on time. This is because the lifespan of some of them is not long, however, for some, they can last for up to a year.

Now, you must test your palm seeds before planting them. This would help determine whether it would germinate or not. To test, simply put the seed in a container of warm water. Now, if the seed floats in water, it is not good for use. But if it sinks in the water, then it is good for planting.

6. SWOT Analysis

Due to our drive for excellence when it comes to running a standard palm oil processing business, we were able to engage some of the finest business consultants in Lagos – Nigeria to look through our business concept and together we were able to critically examine the prospect of the business and to access ourselves to be sure we have what it takes to run a standard palm oil processing business that can compete favorably in the palm oil processing line of business.

In view of that, we were able to take stock of our strengths, our weakness, our opportunities and also the threats that we are likely going to be exposed to in Nigeria and also in other parts of the world that we intend selling our palm oil. Here is a of what we got from the critically conducted SWOT Analysis Delta Palm Oil Ventures;

Our strength lies in the fact that we own our own palm tree plantation. We have state of the art palm oil processing facility and equipment that has positioned us to meet the demand of palm oil in Nigeria and the world at large even if the demand tripled over night or if we have a massive order to meet and emergency need.

Another factor that counts to our advantage is the background of our Chief Executive Office; he has a robust experience in the industry and also a pretty good academic qualification to match the experience acquired which has placed her amongst the top flight business men in Nigeria. We are not ignoring the fact that our team of highly qualified and dedicated workers will also serve as a strength for our organization

We do not take for granted the facts that we have weaknesses. In fact, the reality that we are setting up a palm oil processing business in a city with other smaller and larger palm oil processing businesses might likely pose a challenge for us in breaking into the already saturated market in Nigeria.

In essence our chosen location might be our weakness. But never the less, we have plans to launch out with a big bang. We know with that, we will be able to create a positive impression and we have a proper handle when it comes to building on already gather momentum.

  • Opportunities:

The opportunities available to us are unlimited. Loads of people make use of palm oil on a daily basis and all what we are going to do to push our push our palm oil to them is already perfected. Agbor in Delta state is just ideal for palm oil processing business because the land is ideal for farming palm trees, plus the fact that palm kernel is cheaper in Agbor.

The threat that is likely going to confront us is the fact that we are competing with already established palm oil processing businesses in Delta State and also there are other entrepreneurs who are likely going to launch similar business within the location of our business. Of course, they will compete with us in winning over the available market.

Another threat that we are likely going to face is unfavorable government policies and economic downturn. Usually economic downturn affects purchasing / spending powers and unfavorable government policies can hinder our free – flow of exporting palm oil to other countries of the world.

7. MARKET ANALYSIS

  • Market Trends

It is common trend in the palm oil processing line of business to find palm oil processing companies positioning their business in locations and communities where they can easily have access to fresh and cheap palm kernels. If you make the mistake of positioning this type of business in a location where you would have to travel a distance before you can access palm kernels in commercial quantities, then you would have to struggle to make profits and maintain your overhead and logistics.

So also another trend in this line of business is that most registered and well organized palm oil processing companies look beyond the market within their locations or even Nigeria; they are involved in packaging and exporting palm oil to communities abroad with robust Nigerian cum African communities. United States of America, Canada and most countries in Europe are their major targets.

Lastly, in the bid to stay afloat and continue to make profits from this line of business, most standard businesses that are into palm oil processing tend to work hard to ensure that they own their own palm tree plantation. With that, it is easier for them to maximize profits and grow the business.

8. Our Target Market

Delta Palm Oil Ventures will make sure that the right foundation, structures and processes are put in place to ensure that our staff welfare are well taken of. The Beginner’s Guide To Palm Oil Business In Nigeria

Palm oil, a versatile and widely-used commodity, plays a significant role in various industries, from food to cosmetics and biofuels. Nigeria, with its abundant natural resources and favorable climate, has emerged as a major player in the global palm oil market. In this blog post, we will delve into the palm oil business in Nigeria, exploring its history, current status, challenges, and the path to a sustainable and thriving future.

Table of Contents

Historical Perspective: Introduction

The palm oil industry has deep roots in Nigeria, dating back centuries. Indigenous communities have been cultivating oil palm trees for generations, using the oil for both culinary and cultural purposes. However, it wasn’t until the colonial era that palm oil became a prominent export commodity. The demand for palm oil grew exponentially, shaping Nigeria’s economic landscape and leading to the establishment of large-scale plantations.

Current Status and Importance

Nigeria is one of the world’s largest producers of palm oil, with vast plantations in states like Edo, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. The palm oil industry contributes significantly to the country’s economy, providing employment for millions of people, especially in rural areas. The oil extracted from palm fruit is a staple in Nigerian cuisine and finds its way into various consumer products globally.

Challenges Faced by the Industry

While the palm oil industry in Nigeria holds immense potential, it is not without its challenges:

Deforestation and Environmental Concerns:

The expansion of palm oil plantations has often led to deforestation, resulting in loss of biodiversity and contributing to climate change. The unsustainable practices associated with land clearing have raised environmental concerns both locally and internationally.

Lack of Modernization:

Many palm oil farmers in Nigeria still rely on traditional, labor-intensive methods. The lack of modernization hinders productivity and efficiency, limiting the industry’s growth potential.

Quality Control and Infrastructure:

Ensuring consistent quality and standards in palm oil production remains a challenge. Poor transportation and processing facilities can impact the quality of the final product.

Market Access and Price Fluctuations:

The industry’s dependence on international markets makes it vulnerable to price fluctuations. Limited access to global markets can also hinder growth and profitability.

Towards Sustainability

To ensure the long-term success of the palm oil industry in Nigeria, sustainable practices are crucial:

Responsible Farming:

Encouraging sustainable farming practices that prioritize biodiversity conservation, reduce deforestation, and promote organic cultivation can mitigate environmental concerns.

Technology Adoption:

The adoption of modern farming techniques, such as improved planting materials and efficient processing methods, can enhance productivity and product quality.

Value Addition:

Investing in downstream processing, such as refining and producing higher-value products like specialty oils and biofuels, can increase the industry’s profitability.

Community Engagement:

Involving local communities in decision-making processes and providing them with fair compensation can foster social sustainability and strengthen the industry’s roots.

Certification and Standards:

Obtaining certifications such as RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) can enhance the industry’s reputation and access to global markets.

How Much Can I Use To Start Palm Oil Business?

The amount of capital required to start a palm oil business can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the scale of your operation, the location, the specific activities you plan to undertake (such as farming, processing, or distribution), and the level of technology and infrastructure you intend to use. Here is a rough breakdown of potential expenses to consider:

Land Acquisition:

If you plan to start a palm oil plantation, the cost of purchasing or leasing land will be a significant expense. The size of the land and its location will play a crucial role in determining this cost.

Planting and Cultivation:

The cost of planting oil palm trees, including the purchase of seedlings or young plants, labor for planting, and maintenance during the early growth stages.

Infrastructure:

This includes costs related to building facilities such as processing mills, storage units, and equipment like threshers, boilers, and presses.

Labor Costs:

Labor is a significant expense, especially if you’re running a plantation or processing facility. Costs can include wages for farm workers, machine operators, and administrative staff.

Processing Equipment:

If you plan to process palm oil, you’ll need equipment such as sterilizers, digester tanks, screw presses, and separators. The cost will depend on the scale of your processing operation.

Transportation:

Transportation costs are relevant if you need to move palm fruit from the plantation to the processing facility or the final product to distribution points.

Quality Control and Certification:

Obtaining certifications like RSPO or meeting quality standards may involve additional costs, including documentation, audits, and necessary upgrades.

Marketing and Distribution:

Budget for marketing activities and distribution costs to get your products to customers.

Regulatory and Legal Fees:

Expenses related to permits, licenses, and compliance with regulations.

Miscellaneous Costs:

These could include initial working capital, unexpected expenses, and insurance.

It’s important to conduct thorough research and create a detailed business plan to estimate your specific startup costs accurately. You might also consider seeking advice from industry experts or consulting existing palm oil business owners to get a better understanding of the investment required for your chosen business model.

Keep in mind that the palm oil industry has both risks and potential rewards. Careful financial planning, sustainable practices, and a thorough understanding of the industry dynamics are essential for a successful and profitable venture.

  • Digital platforms for connecting farmers, processors, and buyers can improve transparency and efficiency in the supply chain.

Small-Scale Processing Units:

  • Establishing small-scale processing units in rural areas can provide local farmers with access to processing facilities, reducing post-harvest losses and adding value to their produce.

Export Opportunities:

  • Nigeria’s position as a significant palm oil producer offers opportunities for export to other countries with palm oil deficits.
  • Exploring international trade agreements and building relationships with buyers can create avenues for growth.

Investing in Research and Training:

  • Training programs for farmers on modern cultivation techniques and sustainable practices can be a valuable service.
  • Investing in research to develop disease-resistant varieties or innovative production methods can lead to breakthroughs.

As with any business, thorough market research, a solid business plan, and a clear understanding of the industry’s dynamics are crucial to identifying and capitalizing on the right opportunities. The palm oil industry, with its multifaceted value chain, offers a diverse range of avenues for growth and success.

The palm oil industry in Nigeria stands at a crossroads, facing both challenges and opportunities. With a rich history and a potential for growth, it is imperative to navigate the path towards sustainability.

By adopting responsible practices, embracing modern technology, and ensuring fair economic and environmental stewardship, Nigeria’s palm oil industry can continue to thrive, contributing to the country’s economic development while preserving its natural heritage for generations to come.

The palm oil industry in Nigeria has experienced significant growth over the years, attracting both local and international investors. However, like any business venture, the palm oil business in Nigeria comes with its fair share of risks. we will see various risks associated with the palm oil business and provide insights on how to mitigate them.

1. Land Disputes and Cases of Land Grabbing

Another risk in the palm oil business is the lack of control over the entire oil manufacturing process. Many palm oil producers in Nigeria are farmers who rely on local mills for processing. This lack of control can result in variations in quality, delays in production, and potential losses. To Control this risk, it is advisable to establish strong relationships with reliable palm oil millers or consider investing in your own processing facilities.

Palm oil prices are subject to volatility, which poses a risk to businesses in the industry. Rapid depreciation in price can significantly impact profit margins and financial stability. Implementing robust security measures, such as proper storage facilities, surveillance systems, and strict inventory management, can help minimize the risk of theft and leakage.

Palm oil production in Nigeria holds significant importance both domestically and globally. Nigeria is one of the largest producers of palm oil in the world, with palm oil serving as a crucial commodity in various industries, including food, cosmetics, and biofuels.

However, despite its prominence in the global market, the country faces several challenges in the palm oil production sector.

One of the primary issues is the reliance on imports to meet domestic demand. Despite being a major palm oil producer, Nigeria still imports a significant portion of its palm oil needs.

This dependency on imports not only drains foreign exchange reserves but also undermines the potential economic benefits of local production. Importing palm oil comes with substantial opportunity costs, including missed opportunities for job creation, industrial development, and economic diversification.

In 2021 , Nigeria imported $568M in Palm Oil, becoming the world’s 21st largest importer of Palm Oil. In the same year, Palm Oil was the 14th most imported product in Nigeria. Nigeria imports Palm Oil primarily from: Malaysia ($365M), India ($92.7M), China ($45.2M), Indonesia ($38.2M), and Singapore ($16.8M).

Presco Plc

In the third quarter of 2022, Nigeria imported crude palm oil worth nearly 20 billion Nigerian naira (NGN) (roughly 43.4 million U.S. dollars) from Malaysia.

Nigeria’s palm oil imports from Malaysia, a leading global producer, increased by 65.3% in the first nine months of 2023.

Businesses like Presco Plc can play pivotal roles in addressing these challenges and maximizing the potential of palm oil production in Nigeria.

As a fully integrated company involved in palm oil plantations, processing, and refining, Presco exemplifies the benefits of vertical integration and value addition within the palm oil industry.

Presco’s Excellence

Local production offers numerous advantages over imports. By investing in domestic palm oil production, Nigeria can create employment opportunities in rural areas, where most palm oil plantations are located. This can help alleviate poverty and drive economic growth in these regions.

Presco Plc stands as a hallmark of innovation and excellence in the palm oil industry, boasting a fully integrated business model encompassing plantation management, processing, and refining . As of 2017, the company’s expansive operations spanned 16,812 hectares of prime land dedicated to palm oil cultivation.

At the heart of Presco’s operations lies its state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a palm oil mill capable of processing an impressive 60 tons of fresh fruit bunches per hour. Complementing this, the company operates a refinery or fractionation plant with a robust capacity of 100 tons per day, alongside a palm kernel crushing plant processing 60 tons per day.

Diversifying its product portfolio, Presco Plc offers a range of palm oil derivatives, including palm oil itself, refined bleached & deodorized palm oil, palm fatty acid distillate, and crude palm kernel oil. However, the company’s ambitions extend beyond its current offerings.

Looking toward the future, Presco has strategic plans to invest in rubber plantations, leveraging its expertise and resources to venture into new avenues of growth. Furthermore, the company aims to enhance the capacity of its palm oil mill and refinery, with targets set at 90 tons per hour and 500 tons per day, respectively.

Additionally, promoting local production reduces the country’s reliance on volatile global markets, ensuring a stable and secure palm oil supply for domestic consumption and export.

With its forward-thinking approach and unwavering dedication to quality, Presco is poised to lead the way in industry expansion and advancement for years to come.

To process for yourself, you need to purchase the palm kernel in large quantities from harvesters and process them into palm oil in your mill, then sell to retailers.

Additionally, registering your business makes your customers trust you. To begin, run a name search on CAC’s portal to confirm if your chosen name has not been registered by another person. Thereafter, you can begin the registration process. With basic information like valid ID card, passport photograph, signature and personal details, you are good to go.

Alternatively, you can hire a lawyer to help you register it. One of the recommended firms that can help you speed up the registration process is ReDahlia , located at 43B, Emina crescent off Toyin Street, Ikeja, Lagos.

Step Four: Set Up A Storage Space

The next step is to set up storage space. Ensure the space is cool, safe, and dry. Rent a space or a room where you can store the palm oil while you wait for the right time to sell. Additionally, you will need to purchase kegs or drums to store your oil. Most times, people go for the 25litre yellow kegs.

Step Five: Arrange With Suppliers

In case you are not the one producing the palm oil, you will need to have a solid arrangement with suppliers you can purchase from. If you carry out step two well, you will have the right knowledge suppliers to source your product from.

There are states in Nigeria that are known for producing palm oil in large quantities. Although there are several other states that produce palm oil, these states are seen as the largest producers of quality palm oil in Nigeria.

  • Delta State
  • Akwa-Ibom State
  • Cross-River State
  • Bayelsa State
  • Rivers State

Step Six: Find A Good Means of Transportation

If you don’t know the right mode of transportation to use in transporting your goods, you may end up incurring huge costs that will affect your profit.

Hence, compare prices with several commercial carriers before settling for one. The easiest approach is to ask your supplier to suggest the cheapest, reliable, and safest mode of transportation to you as they’ve been in the system way before you. But, if you have your personal or company vehicle, you will not have a challenge with this step.

Step Seven: Source For Customers

The efforts you put into steps one to five will go to waste if this step is not effective. You need a solid marketing plan which should be part of your business plan to succeed in this business.

As a matter of fact, it is better to source for your would-be retailers before buying or processing your palm oil. This will give you a ready market when you are ready to sell.

You can find retailers amongst market sellers, cosmetologists, housewives, etc. To attract a larger customer base, you can explore other modes of marketing such as:

  • Online marketing (social media, google ad, etc)
  • Referral marketing
  • Newspaper marketing
  • Word of mouth
  • Collaboration/Partnership

Furthermore, you can also export palm oil as some international countries may have the need for palm oil, and Nigeria is known for its quality palm oil.

If you are considering exportation, one of the trusted places to find international buyers is Alibaba.com, a website known for connecting suppliers or manufacturers with buyers. Vconnect is equally a good place to try.

Apart from Alibaba and Vconnect, run thorough research for other platforms that can aid your palm oil exportation and go through our content on how to run an export business.

CHAPTER ONE

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This plan is prepared for ABC oil resources, based on one year of cognate apprenticeship experience, both practical and intellectual in the palm kernel oil extracting business. The firm is highly focused and promise to follow a path of prosperity of palm kernel nuts for its owner and staff. ABC oil resources will engage in the crushing of palm kernel nuts in order to extract palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake. The purpose of this plan is to demonstrate to my key financial partner (bank of industry), technical partners e.t.c. of the high profit making potential of the business. The plan is to also attract and secure my youth entrepreneurship scheme programme (YES-P) loan facility with the Bank of industry (BOi) for the venture. The factory produces palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake as its main product. Palm kernel oil is a main raw material in the production of edible vegetable oil and palm kernel cake is a major raw material in the production of assorted animal feeds. The proposed installation capacity of the factory is about 480 metric tons of palm kernel oil per annum and about 660 metric tons of palm kernel cake per annum. Also about 68 metric tons per annum of a minor product called palm kernel oil sludge is also being produced. An estimated and conservative sales revenue of N60,000,000 will be generated in the first three years of operation and will grow steadily at a yearly average. Subsequently, the projections contained here in are authentic and will be used as the budget for the business.

1.2 MISSION AND OBJECTIVE ABC oil resources will produce palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake for the city of its domicile, Lagos, the entire Lagos state and the nation in general. The first three years will be used to consolidate its hold on the raw materials bases while continuing its production process in the state. 1.3 KEYS TO SUCCESS To produce palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake of high quality matching industry standards and chemistry expectations. To deliver to buyers of our finished products with punctuality and at competitive and guaranteed prices. To give incentives and good purchasing prices to suppliers who deliver to us good quality palm kernel nuts with low moisture content, low shell content and low imparities content and regular basis. 1.4 VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT VISION: The vision is to become the ledding producer of high quality palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake in the country. MISSION: The mission of the company is to operate a production plant committed to excellence in the production of high quality products that will be accepted across the industry.

CHAPTER TWO BUSINESS MODEL 2.1 PALM KERNEL OIL PRODUCTION This is the process of extracting palm kernel oil (PKO) from palm kernel nuts (PKN). This palm kernel oil which is the primary products are used by industries that produces vegetable oils, soaps, creams and other cosmetics, or for any vital industries purposes. In the process of extracting this palm kernel oil, there are also two secondary products which are being derived from these palm kernel nuts, they are called the palm kernel cakes (PKC) which is the rudiments, and the sludge which is the sediments. These secondary products are used as animal feeds and for other purposes.

2.2 THE PROBLEM STATEMENT Those industries that uses this palm kernel oil as their raw materials to produce edible vegetable oils, soaps and creams finds it difficult going into the remote areas or villages where palm kernel nuts can be gotten in large quantities in which can be used to produce their raw materials. This is because most of the operators of those industries are foreigners, thereby they finds it difficult and dangerous going into the villages to source for palm kernel nuts.

The livestock owners who makes use of the palm kernel cake (PKC) as animal feeds for their livestock cannot on their own go ahead to produce those palm kernel cakes, this is because for them to produce those palm kernel cakes, they need to own a palm kernel oil production factory, in which will seem so difficult, cumbersome and expensive for them to embark on. So as regarding the fact that they cannot produce feeds because they don’t have the palm kernel oil factory or machineries, they go about everyday in search of these palm kernel cakes for their livestock. Being unable to get these feed and on time might thereby cause malnutrition or death to the livestocks.

2.3 THE SOLUTIONS ABC resources will be going to those typical villages or remove areas that those foreigners couldn’t go to source palm kernel nuts, bring it to the city where the factory is located, crush the palm kernel nuts and extract the crude palm kernel oil and sludge for those industries to access the raw materials for their production with ease or without fears of going into the typical villages or remote ares of the country. We will also deliver to those livestock owners who uses our palm kernel cake as their poultry feeds, thereby relieving them of the pain and the inability to own a palm kernel oil crushing machine just for the purpose of getting their animal feeds.

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 THE MARKETING PLAN 3.1 MARKET RESEARCH Nigeria with an estimated population of over 150 million people, a national population growth rate of 5.7% per annun and an average economic growth rate 3.5% per annum in the past five years it his a very large market for palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake. This is because about 80% of all the edible vegetable oil consumed in Nigeria is made from refined palm kernel oil, what we call “groundnut oil “ in the ordinary market place. So with these, the demand for crude palm kernel oil in the local market is very huge, as a result that, the refineries that uses it as their raw materials do book for the products and pay in advance in order to secure the products.

3.2 MARKET SIZE, STRUCTURE AND GROWTH Going by a recently concluded detailed research, presents a detailed analysis which shows that demand and supply gap is currently estimated to be between 500,000 metric tons to 600,00 metric tons per annual. An estimate also shows that Nigeria requires about 1,200,000 tons of vegetable oils to meet up to the national requirements for food and non food uses. From a detailed analysis of the sector, total palm kernel oil and palm kernel product per annum is currently about 74.000 tons even though the ban on crude palm kernel oil importation into the country was lifted in the year 2008, yet it has not bridged the gap. So we can see that with this demand and supply gap, it opens up more business opportunities for investors and business owners in the sector.

3.3 MARKET SEGMENTATION AND ACTIONS MARKET SEGMENTATION: Our markets in this industry are being segmented into three which are namely: The palm kernel oil market segment The palm kernel cake market segment The palm kernel sludge market segment. As regards to our market segmentation, some of the customers’ needs in all the markets are homogenous while some are different. Those customers in the palm kernel oil market segment have some atom of homogeneity needs with those customers in the palm kernel sludge market. Meanwhile between those our customers in the palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake market segments their needs are different.

MARKETING ACTIONS: In marketing the firm’s products to its different market segments, the firm will undertake on the following actions. The firm will engage in prospecting customers through the owners of those factories which uses our end products or through their marketing/purchasing managers. We can also prospect our customers through agents. We will be informing our customers through our various or multiple channels of communication about the availability of our products after the production process. Prompt and adequate delivery of products to our customers after.

Palm oil mills:

Mills are an essential part of the palm oil industry in Nigeria. These mills are responsible for buying the harvested palm fruits from smallholder farms and processing them into palm oil.

The process involves a series of mechanical and chemical processes, such as sterilization, threshing, pressing, and clarification, to extract the oil from the fruit.

Once the oil is extracted, it is either sold to wholesalers or middlemen, depending on the mill’s business model.

The processes for starting any of these palm oil business models are almost the same.

Set Aside Your Capital and Resources

For a small-scale supply and storage business, you can start with as little as N100,000 to N500,000.

This should cover expenses such as buying palm oil from local vendors, transportation costs, and storage expenses.

You will need containers to store your palm oil. The best are plastic 25-liter or 20-liter gallons. If you are short on money, look for used jerry cans that are still in good condition

Purchase a weighing scale to measure the quantity of palm oil you buy and sell.

Get funnels and a hose. You will also need a clean strip of cloth for filtering the oil in case you purchase a dirty one.

Find a means of transporting the palm oil from the supplier to your storage facility and from your storage facility to the buyers.

A vehicle or a motorcycle will serve this purpose.

Finally, you will need a storage facility to store the palm oil. This can be a rented warehouse or a room in your house.

How to Store Palm Oil for a Long Time

To store palm oil for a long time in Nigeria, it is important to follow some basic storage guidelines.

Here are some tips:

  • Store palm oil in a clean, dry, and airtight container.

Avoid storing it in a container made of metal or other reactive materials, as this will cause the oil to spoil or become sour.

Plastic drums and plastic jerry cans are best.

  • Keep the container in a cool, dark, and dry place. Exposure to heat and light will cause the oil to deteriorate and spoil quickly.
  • Ensure that the container is tightly sealed to prevent air and moisture from entering.

Exposure to air and moisture causes oxidation. Oxidation makes the oil rancid. (smell and taste unpleasant.)

  • If possible, store palm oil in smaller quantities. This will help to reduce the frequency of opening the container.
  • Avoid storing palm oil near strong-smelling foods or chemicals, as it can absorb odors and flavors.

By following these tips, you can store palm oil for a long time in Nigeria without the risk of spoilage or deterioration.

It’s also important to note that even when stored properly, palm oil has a limited shelf life and should be used within a reasonable amount of time

How Long Can Store Palm Oil Last?

Palm oil will last a long time if it’s stored correctly.

If the container is closed and kept in a cool, dry, and dark place, it will last up to two years.

But if the container is opened, the oil won’t last as long because air and moisture will get inside.

Don’t put palm oil in the fridge because it will turn solid.

How To Start Palm Oil Processing Business In Nigeria

This has brought about the need for large and medium scale processing plants in the country. Unlike the large scale processing plant that is scarcely found, the medium scale processing plant are more commonly found in the country, which on average can process up to 55 tonnes of palm oil fruits daily.

The processing of palm oil has become a very lucrative form of business venture in Nigeria and this is as a result of the majority of the people who are ready to invest in it with great optimism of having maximum returns from the business.

These structures bring about profitability and stability. A good business plan is a basic requirement before any successful processing of palm oil can be achieved.

Above is a flow chart explaining the processing of palm oil. I will further enlighten you on what palm oil processing involves.

Steps involved in palm oil processing

In the processing of palm oil into its finished produce the following steps are involved;

1. Weighing and Transportation

This is important as it helps you to know the exact amount of palm oil to be produced and the cost at which the palm fruits were bought and harvested.

It is the general calculation of the amount invested into the production process before the oil processing begins in the mill.

Transporting of the palm fruits from the truck is also very important because if the fruits bunch are not properly moved from the truck to the processing point, there could be change in the PH level and taste of the palm fruits, which will eventually affect the general production process.

This is because a certain minimal PH level must be maintained throughout the processing of the palm fruits into pure palm oil.

2. Threshing and Sterilization

At this stage the palm oil fruits are separated from their bunch. The palm oil fruits are then boiled at a very high temperature to soften the fruits, thereby making it easy for the palm fruits to be extracted.

Large palm oil mill plants place the fruits in rotatory drums to complete this process while small palm oil production facilities performs this process of threshing with their hands.

This method also helps in the sterilization of the fruits, thereby making them free of any form of contaminants. This process is known as sterilization by pressurized cooking.

3. Pressing/ Extraction of Palm oil

This is one of the most important part of the whole process because it is at this point that the oil is being extracted from the skin and pulp.

Some facilities place the fruits in large rotatory drums which starts to break down the fruits and releases some of the palm oil. Heavy metal plates are mechanically pressed into the fruits to squeeze out the oil. Pressing machines may use hydraulic or pneumatic power to process large batches at once.

4. Dilution of palm oil with water

This is the process of mixing the palm oil with water. The dilution of the oil and water helps make the palm oil lighter so as to enable easier filtration process.

5. Filtration of the palm oil

At this stage the oil will contain unwanted remains (debris and impurities) of the palm oil, this is the point where purification is done. The palm oil can be sold as low quality palm oil or sent on for further processing.

6. Refining of the palm oil

The palm oil refining process helps to get rid of harmful impurities and needless substances in the crude edible oil, getting standard edible oil is done by utilizing the physical and chemical processes.

7. Fractionation

During the process the palm oil is heated to separate out the various triglycerides contained within the crude edible oil.

This brings about the separation of the low quality oil from the higher quality oil, which has a rich content of fatty acids which are essential for the body and contains less saturated fats.

8. Storage of the palm oil

This is the final process, at this stage the already processed palm oil is then stored in large drum, barrels or gallons for later transportation to the final consumers or to market places, where people can buy for their consumption and also retailers can buy in large volumes to resell in bits to final consumers.

Because the demand for palm oil is high, it will be sold out easily.

Important points to put into consideration before setting up a mill plant:

1. locate a spacious environment.

This is important for the installation of the plant, which should be a stone throw away from the source of the palm fruits, and should always be fresh known as fresh fruit bunch (FFB).

The good space should accommodate truck for parking and offloading of the palm fruits. The rooms should also be spacious enough to accommodate many workers.

2. Source of clean water

It is important to have a good source of water supply as water is paramount for the steaming and sterilization process.

The supply of water could either be from the water board or a personal borehole that was dug for the sole purpose of the palm oil processing, which will be cheaper to maintain and readily available when ever need calls for it.

3. Employing of qualified and experienced staff

The workers that should operate the mill should be made to undergo necessary training, to enable the smooth running of the operation.

Professional like the chemical, metallurgical and mechanical engineers should be hired either on temporary or permanent basis for the testing and evaluating of the palm produce as well as maintaining the plant.

Equipment needed for setting up a palm oil processing mill

The mill is a set up that can be designed for the processing of palm oil. A Mill is a factory fitted with machinery for a particular manufacturing process.

The mill does most of the processing operations like boiling, threshing, fermentation and fruit clarification. But if threshing is done by the labourers a thresher wouldn’t be requires in the mill set-up. But in this case the output will vary as a machines will usually safe time, stress and reduce waste.

In the palm oil processing mill, the machines commonly found are:

The thresher, boiler, presser and clarifier. Each of which has its built in capacity, the smaller ones can produce up to 1 ton daily and the medium to large ones can produce between 3 to 100 tons of palm oil daily.

Since the most commonly found mills are the medium scale mills, we will adopt a medium scale model as it is commonly found in Nigeria. The list of the items is reflective of the medium scale model.

A 10 tonnes capacity mill: This mill will produce about 10 tonnes of palm oil. This mill includes the boiler, thresher, presser and the clarifier. This will cost about N4,000,000.

Diesel generator: This generator should be at least a 16KVA power generator and will cost about N1,600,000.

Bore-hole: The borehole should be installed with an electric pump which will be connected to the tank for storage and this will cost about N500,000

Plot of land: A good land space that can accommodate the mill set-up, the tractors and the large workers. The price of the land will vary depending on the proximity to major roads and township. But on an average the land should cost around N1.4 to N2 million.

In summary the total cost should amount to about N7.5 to N8,000,000

Expected profit Margin

40 tonnes of fresh fruit branches is needed to produce about 10 tonnes of palm oil this is because only 10% of the oil is extracted, which is an average capacity for a medium scale mill.

The processing time for each batch of the palm fruit branches is about 4 days and fermentation takes place for about 3 days.

With weekends put into consideration about 12 to 13 days of palm oil produce is left. Which means on a monthly basis 120 tonnes of palm oil can be produced. But the machine can only produce about 100 tonnes of palm oil.

1 ton of palm oil is sold for about 590.50$ which equates to N212,875.25 (with the present dollar rate of 360.50 per dollar)

100 tonnes = N21,287,525

About 40% of the total expenditure is the estimated cost for the palm fruits.  (40% of 21,287,525) = 8,515,010

Deducting the 40% for the fruits from the total expenditure will be

21,287,525 – 8,515,010 = 12,772,515

Assuming the estimated cost of the general maintenance, transportation, utility, staff payment and other cost is about N4,000,000 and deducting it from what is left (12,772,515 – 4,000,000 = N8,772,515)

Your estimated profit when embarking on the business should be approximately N8.8 million

The business start-up capital is around N7,500,000

The business is capital intensive and the palm oil is sold based on demand by the customers.

The expected profit margin is just a rough estimate and can vary with different locations, place and time.

Nigeria, Malaysia to sign MoU over palm biomass industry

Deborah Dan-Awoh

The National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria (NPPAN) has announced that the Federal Government is poised to sign a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Government marking a significant stride in the development of palm biomass in Nigeria.

Amb. Alphosus Inyang, the President of NPPAN, shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Biomass is agricultural waste, representing an untapped resource with vast economic potential. The focus is on transforming this waste into wealth. NPPAN is strategically collaborating with its Malaysian counterparts to replicate the success of Malaysia’s palm biomass industry in Nigeria.

Inyang highlighted the immense economic impact that the development of palm biomass could bring to Nigeria. Projections include a potential $10 billion contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) within four years, coupled with the generation of over five million jobs in five years.

He emphasised Nigeria’s substantial annual generation of agricultural waste and emphasized that the MoU would enable the country to harness these waste materials for various industrial purposes.

What you should know

The potential applications of palm biomass are diverse and include the production of industrial goods, electricity generation, medicine, fertilizer, and more.

  • Inyang drew attention to the environmental benefits, citing the potential for carbon credit gains, forest preservation, conservation efforts, and job creation.
  • He emphasized that the palm tree, with its 90% biomass and 10% palm oil composition, presents a largely unexplored resource in Nigeria. Various parts of the palm tree, currently discarded as waste, could be utilized for activities such as electricity generation, furniture material production, organic fertilizer manufacturing, and medicinal applications.
  • NPPAN is actively engaged with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to develop a comprehensive National Biomass Master Plan for Nigeria.

This plan, expected to be finalized by June, will serve as a foundational policy document guiding the implementation of palm biomass initiatives in the country. Inyang appealed to the Ministry of Industry to play a facilitating role in expediting the development of this critical master plan, which is poised to chart the course for the sustainable utilization of palm biomass resources in Nigeria.
