1. What types of worksheets are available for kids?

There are a variety of worksheets available for kids that help with a range of topics, including math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. Math worksheets can help kids learn how to count, add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Reading worksheets can help kids learn to read and spell words, and practice comprehension. Writing worksheets can help kids practice grammar, punctuation, and creative writing. Science worksheets can help kids learn about topics such as plants, animals, the human body, and the environment. Social studies worksheets can help kids learn about history, government, and geography.

2. What age range are worksheets appropriate for?

Worksheets are an effective way to introduce a variety of topics to children. They can be used to teach a range of skills, including reading, writing, math, problem solving and critical thinking. Generally, worksheets are most appropriate for children between the ages of 4 and 10.

5. How do I know which worksheets are most appropriate for my child?

When choosing worksheets for your child, it’s important to consider their age, learning level, and interests. Consider the content of the worksheet and make sure it is age-appropriate and within their current learning level. Additionally, look for worksheets that incorporate topics that your child is interested in. This will help keep them engaged in the activity and make it more enjoyable for them.

6. How often should I use worksheets with my child?

The frequency of using worksheets with your child will depend on their age, abilities, and interests. Generally, it is best to use worksheets as supplemental material to reinforce concepts and skills that have already been taught. Younger children may benefit from using worksheets more frequently, while older children may only need to use them occasionally. It is important to find a balance that works for your child and to be flexible in your approach.

7. What are the best ways to introduce worksheets to my child?

The best way to introduce worksheets to your child is to start small. Begin with worksheets that focus on simple concepts like counting, writing numbers, and basic shapes. Once your child is comfortable with these concepts, gradually introduce more complex worksheets that focus on problem-solving, critical thinking, and other more advanced concepts. Additionally, make sure to incorporate activities such as coloring, drawing, and other creative outlets into your child’s learning process. This will help to engage your child and make worksheets more enjoyable.

8. What are the different types of learning activities I can use with worksheets?

Worksheets can be used for a variety of learning activities. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Fill in the blanks: Have students fill in the blanks in a worksheet to test their knowledge of a subject.
  • Matching: Have students match a word or phrase to its definition or description.
  • Word searches: Have students search for words or phrases related to a topic.
  • Multiple choice: Present students with a question and multiple potential answers.
  • True or false: Have students decide whether a statement is true or false.
  • Crosswords: Give students a crossword puzzle to solve.
  • Scavenger hunts: Have students search for specific words or phrases in a worksheet.
  • Problem-solving: Present students with a problem and have them work through it to find a solution.
  • How can I make worksheets more engaging for my child?

Worksheets can be a great tool for helping your child learn, but they can also be boring. To make worksheets more engaging for your child, try to introduce elements of fun and play. Think of ways to turn the worksheet into a game, like rolling dice to determine the answers or timing them to see how quickly they can complete the task. You can also add incentives, such as small rewards for completing the worksheet or a special treat when they finish. Encourage your child to think creatively when completing worksheets, by asking them to come up with their own unique ways to solve the problem or use their imagination to create drawings or stories related to the worksheet. Finally, be sure to provide positive reinforcement for their efforts, no matter how small.

Cough? Sore throat? More schools suggest mildly sick kids attend anyway

This photo taken Aug. 15, 2016, shows the front of the Bellefonte Area School District certified school nurses office. Schools are confronting soaring absence rates. Some are calling for parents to send their children to class even if they are not feeling 100% well. During the pandemic, schools urged parents and children to stay home at any sign of illness. Now that the COVID-19 emergency has ended, guidance on when to keep children home varies widely. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends staying home with fever, vomiting or diarrhea, or when students “are not well enough to participate in class.” But many districts go far beyond that, delineating a dizzying array of symptoms they say should rule out attendance. Trenace Dorsey-Hollins’ 5-year-old daughter was sick a lot last year. Dorsey-Hollins followed school guidelines and kept her home when she had a cough or a sore throat — or worse — until she was completely better.

Near the end of the year, the school in Fort Worth, Texas, called her in to talk about why her daughter had missed so much school .

During the pandemic, schools urged parents and children to stay home at any sign of illness. Even though the emergency has ended, she said no one has clarified that those rules have changed.

“It’s extremely confusing,” she said.

Gov. Jim Pillen is joined by other state senators as he announces that the state will participate in the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer Program after previously saying Nebraska wouldn't take part during a press conference in the Warner Chamber at the Capitol, Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, in Lincoln, Neb. (Kenneth Ferriera/Lincoln Journal Star via AP)

“In the past, if the child didn’t have a fever over 100, then it’s okay to send them to school,” said the mother of a 5- and 13-year-old. “But now it’s like if they have a cough or they’re sneezing, you might want to keep them home. Which is it?”

Widely varying guidance on when to keep children home has only added to the confusion, which many see as a factor in the nationwide epidemic of chronic school absences . Some advocates and school systems — and the state of California — are now encouraging kids to come to class even when they have the sniffles or other nuisance illnesses like lice or pinkeye.

Families need to hear they no longer must keep kids home at any sign of illness, said Hedy Chang, the executive director of Attendance Works. The national nonprofit aimed at improving attendance has issued its own guidance, urging parents to send kids to school if they can participate in daily activities .

“We have to now re-engage kids and families and change their thinking about that,” Chang said.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends staying home when there’s fever, vomiting or diarrhea, or when students “are not well enough to participate in class.”

But many districts go far beyond that, delineating a dizzying array of symptoms they say should rule out attendance. Fort Worth Independent School District, where Dorsey-Hollins’ youngest daughter attends kindergarten, advises staying home if a child has a cough, sore throat or rash. A student should be “fever-free” for 24 hours without medication before returning to school, per district guidelines.

Austin Independent School District in Texas lists “eye redness,” “undetermined rash” or “open, draining lesions” as reasons to stay home. Kids with lice can’t attend class in New York City schools. Maryland’s Montgomery County recommends keeping a child home with a stomachache , “pale or flushed face” or “thick yellow discharge from the nose.”

Finding the right balance is difficult, and it’s understandable that different places would approach it differently, said Claire McCarthy, a pediatrician at Boston Children’s Hospital and professor at Harvard Medical School.

“Each school or school district has a different tolerance for illness,” said McCarthy.

It all leaves many parents feeling puzzled.

“It’s a struggle,” said Malika Elwin, a mother of a second grader on New York’s Long Island.

She doesn’t want to expose other children or burden the teacher with her daughter’s runny nose, so she’s kept her daughter home longer even though she’s feeling better because she still has cold symptoms. “Then I regret that because she just runs around here all day perfectly fine,” she said.

For those who test positive for COVID-19, the CDC still calls for staying home and isolating for at least five days. But guidance from states and individual schools varies widely. In some school systems, guidance allows for students who test positive to go to school as long as they are asymptomatic.

Trenace Dorsey-Hollins said it is hard for parents like her to keep track.

“Is it actually OK to sit in school with a cough if you don’t have a fever and haven’t tested positive for COVID?” she said.

When schools closed during the pandemic, kids fell behind academically — and continued chunks of school absences have made it harder for them to catch up. So some authorities have re-evaluated their tolerance for illness. During the 2021-2022 school year, more than a quarter of students missed at least 10% of the school year , up from 15% before the pandemic.

Missing that much school puts students at risk of not learning to read or graduate . Absent students also lose out on meals, socialization with peers and caring adults, physical exercise, and access to mental health counseling and health care. In other words, missing school has its own health effects.

And when a class sees high levels of chronic absenteeism, it hurts the students who are there because a teacher has to spend time reorienting the students who’ve been away.

The state of California, where 25% of students last year missed 10% of the school year, took a new approach to sick-day guidance this fall. Instead of only saying when a child should stay home, the guidance describes circumstances when a child might be slightly unwell but can come to school.

Overall, students should stay home when their symptoms “prevent them from participating meaningfully in routine activities.” But coming to school with diarrhea is all right as long as a child can make it to the toilet in time. Going to school with mild cold symptoms, sore throat, mild rash or pinkeye are all “OK.”

What’s more, California doesn’t insist on waiting 24 hours after a fever or vomiting before returning to school. Going fever-free or without vomiting overnight is enough.

Boston Public Schools took a similar stance in its online recommendations for parents. “Respiratory infections are common,” reads the online guidance. “If the child does not have fever, does not appear to have decreased activity or other symptoms, it is not necessary for the child to stay home.”

The shift in guidance could have a disproportionate impact on low-income communities and people of color, said Noha Aboelata, who leads the Roots Community Health Center in Oakland, California. People in those communities might be more likely to live in multigenerational homes, take crowded public transportation or have poor ventilation in their homes, she said. When people are out and about while sick, vulnerable loved ones could be put at risk.

She had hoped the pandemic’s lessons about staying home when contagious and taking care of yourself and your family when sick would outlast the public health emergency. Instead, she said, “it feels like the pendulum is swinging fiercely back in the other direction.”

But changing the culture around school absences goes beyond just issuing guidance.

Some schools in San Diego County seem unaware of California’s new guidance allowing kids to attend school while mildly sick, said Tracy Schmidt, who oversees attendance for the county Office of Education.

Still, others have adopted and it and have begun talking through symptoms with parents who call to report their children are sick, urging them to bring them in and see how it goes. It gives her hope that as more schools and parents learn about this guidance, students will miss less school.

“The most important place for our kids to be is school,” she said. “We need to leave behind this mindset that we had to adopt during the pandemic because we were in a public safety emergency.”

How not to raise an iPad kid, according to 3 experts and 3 parents who have made the switch

  • There's no simple answer to the right amount of screen time, experts say.
  • It's more important to make intentional decisions rather than defaulting to screen time.
  • Set kids up for success by providing fun activities that aren't linked to a device.

Insider Today

Like many complex parenting questions, there's no simple answer to the idea of how much screen time is too much . The family culture, schedule, and temperament of kids all play a role in deciding the right amount of screen time for your family, says Dr. Daniel Ganjian , a board-certified pediatrician at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

"The goal isn't to demonize screens entirely, but to create a healthy balance in your family's life," Ganjian told Business Insider.

And yet, when that balance falls off kilter, it's possible to reduce screen time in your home and recalibrate your children's expectations. Here's how.

Make other options more appealing

Since we live in a digital world, kids will have more and more access to screens as they grow. Setting up healthy habits means not just restricting screen time but also teaching kids how to manage the pull of digital distractions.

"The end goal is not to control how your child uses their time, but to teach them the skills to make smart decisions," said Dr. Jonathan Maynard , a pediatrician with Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, California. "Giving them good experiences that don't involve screen use is one of the best ways to do that."

Jenna Hermans , a mom of four and author of "Chaos to Calm: 5 Ways Busy Parents Can Break Free From Overwhelm," says setting kids up for success and making screen time reduction a positive experience is key.

"Keep a basket of art supplies next to the dining table , leave a guitar in the living room, a hula hoop or jump rope by the front door, or a basketball hoop on the garage door," she recommends. "Explain that with more free time away from screens, there are awesome activities they can do and new, fun ways they can spend their time."

Consider going cold turkey

Ganjian generally recommends a gradual reduction in screen time. Yet some families find going cold turkey is best for them. Laura Siciliano-Rosen did a monthlong screen elimination last year with her kids, who are 8 and 10.

"The kids did not take it well, but after the first week, it got easier for everyone, and there was more peace in our home," she said. The kids started drawing more, and even when the family reintroduced small amounts of screen time, "they are more balanced now with their on- and off-screen activities," Siciliano-Rosen said.

Create screen-free zones and times

Maynard recommends creating spaces and times when screens are nowhere to be seen. The most important? "Include one hour of screen-free time before bedtime each night," he said.

Keep all devices in another room during family mealtimes, and consider barring kids from taking their devices into their bedrooms. That allows you to keep an eye on your children's digital activities Maynard said.

Decide what must happen before screen time

Hermans emphasizes screen time should be in addition to downtime, not in place of it. Kids and teens need plenty of time to unwind, play, and relax away from screens. Set a rule that kids must read, play outside , or complete chores before getting on their devices, she says. Post a list and stick to it so your children know what to expect.

Find less-invasive options

Angela Sharp wanted to steer her daughter, who is now 9, away from YouTube and gaming . So, she offered an alternative: audio books and kid's podcasts.

"She'd much rather listen to an audiobook and simultaneously paint, draw, or craft than have visual screen time," Sharp said.

Helene Abiola made a similar switch for her 7-year-old son. "He seemed to be in a trance-like state staring at the screen," Abiola said. Now, he does legos or draws while listening to his favorite podcasts: "Wow in the World" and "Little Stories Everywhere."

Use technology to help you

Jamie Davis Smith, whose children are 13 and 16, started using the Screen Time parental control app this year to limit the time her children can spend on their devices. Her husband spent about an hour on the phone with Apple tech support to set up their plan, which includes limited TikTok and YouTube, with more time for music.

She also set her children's ages as younger on their devices so she can retain the most parental control. "I just set them all as babies," she said.

Model a healthy relationship with technology

If you're asking children to put down their devices, you have to lead by example.

"Modeling is the best way to create a healthy relationship with screens," Hermans said. "Whatever your kids are exposed to regularly will become the norm. If your phone follows you everywhere you go, your kids will think that's normal."

Being more intentional about screen time can be uncomfortable at first for kids and adults, but the benefits are worth it.

"By setting reasonable limits, offering engaging alternatives, and modeling responsible screen use, you can help your children develop healthy habits for the digital age," Ganjian said.
