Do Symmetry Pages Count as Learning Worksheets?

Symmetry pages are a unique kind of activity that has been proven to benefit children in a variety of ways. While symmetry pages may be slightly different from traditional learning worksheets, that doesn’t mean they don’t count as learning how to learn!

In fact, symmetry pages can be an excellent way for kids to challenge their minds and provide them with a different way to look at problems and how to solve them.

This is especially important for children who may not be as motivated to complete traditional learning assignments, but still need that challenge in order to unlock their true potential.

While symmetry pages can be a lot of fun, they are just one small aspect of the curriculum you use with your child. Therefore, we recommend using our free printable symmetry worksheets as a supportive aid to your current math curriculum.

How do Symmetry Worksheets Work?

When you download these geometry worksheets, your kids will be presented with various images that have been chopped in half. They will have half of an image and will be expected to complete the other half.

The goal is to come up with a mirror image of the half image you have in front of you. Complete lines of symmetry and see how many symmetrical shapes you can find in the mirror image you are creating! Coming up with the solution to these 2d shapes can be fun, challenging, and highly entertaining.

These worksheets are ideal for children who are in 4th grade, but older and younger students are welcome to enjoy these pages as well. Most of my kids get a kick out of these worksheets and many of my readers enjoy them too. Really, they are appropriate for anybody between the ages of 3 (prek) and 13.

What is the Benefit of Printable Symmetry Worksheets?

One of the greatest benefits of symmetry pages is that they are not bound by any rules or constraints. Of course, symmetry worksheets will still be logical and problem-solving components that your children must complete, but your child can use their creativity to fill in the blanks with a little bit of creative liberty.

This can be a great way to encourage some of those problem-solving skills that are vital for your child’s success later on in life!

At the same time, it is important not to let your child use imagination too much with their symmetry worksheets. You don’t want them to get lost or distracted while completing an image. Save that extra dose of creativity for the coloring process at, so be sure to keep an eye on your child and guide their creative process.

Kids who have some creative liberty while also being exposed to logical problem-solving will have a much more well-rounded education.

While many kids grow up with creative parents who encourage them to just follow their dreams, symmetry worksheets are an excellent way to teach kids how it feels when things don’t go as planned and they must adjust accordingly, so be sure that your child is always challenged with symmetry math pages that will benefit them in the long run!

But what else can your kids gain from these kids of math worksheets ? Why fine motor skills of course! Learning how to manipulate a pencil in a way that is very detailed and precise, rather than just random and willy-nilly, can certainly increase fine motor skills.

Learn symmetry art, the understanding of symmetry, and more with these free printable symmetry activities! Not to mention graphing and how to recognize symmetrical objects.

Completing the missing half of these symmetrical pictures is so much better than boring workbooks and online word problems, wouldn’t you agree?

What Can Be Learned from Symmety Pages Such as These?

When it comes to symmetry pages, your child can learn a lot about how shapes work together and how balance is key in many aspects of life. A symmetrical image will naturally feel balanced to us, even if there are subtle differences that our brains don’t immediately pick up on.

Learning symmetry patterns is an excellent way for kids to dive into the world of shapes and how they work together. Even if your child is having a particularly difficult time recognizing shapes that are similar, symmetry pages will provide them with an excellent way to hone those skills as well as introduce some basic geometry concepts as your child begins working on their symmetry worksheets!

In addition to learning geometric shapes, kids can also increase their logic skills. They will be more able to spot solutions that pop up in their everyday lives when these logic skills are honed.

The best part is that all of this will happen naturally since symmetry worksheets are so fun and creative. If you want your child to learn these skills without them feeling like they’re just doing school work, then printable symmetry worksheets can be a perfect way to allow their creativity and logical thinking both shine!

Symmetry Art Activity – 5 Free Coloring Pages

The dragonfly post was such a hit with my little guy, Jack, I had to make more. Be sure to check out the original symmetry art activity , if you haven’t already.

So, here’s five more activities to download for free! Once you print them, have your kid fold the paper down the dotted line. Then place the paper on a window (you can even use a small strip of tape to hold it in place). Next have your kid trace the lines to complete the other side.

A different way to do this activity is with paint. Have your kid paint the side with lines, then while the paint is still wet fold the paper along the dotted lines (with the paint on the inside). This will transfer the wet paint to the other side, completing the image. My kids preferred this method, it seemed very magical .

Thank you so much!

Hi, can you make a left handed copy?

Yes, I've added a left-handed version. Thanks for the feedback!

Love these! Thank you for sharing

printable symmetry pictures

My daughter is left handed, so thank you so much for thinking of offering it for left handed children. I never thought of the challenge she would have doing symmetry until I saw your left handed download. I appreciate it!

Thank you for thinking about let handed children, it is not easy to find things for left handed children, İ appreciate it ☺

Re: mirror drawing, good exercise, but please, in your demonstration photo, show the child holding the pencil properly - google proper pencil grip.

This grip would be considered developmentally appropriate for primary students. Any pinch grip is acceptable.

What age should I be doing this with my son he’s 3. Should I wait till kindergarten?

it is creative to develop intelligence!

Symmetry Butterfly Painting (with Free Printable!)

This Symmetry Butterfly Painting is a fun way to talk about symmetry and to celebrate spring!

Spring is here and it’s the perfect time to do a fun butterfly craft for kids!

Butterflies are out in full force in the spring and summer, so it’s a great time to talk about these amazing insects with kids!

This butterfly symmetry art for kids is a fun craft I remember from my teaching days.

The preschool and kindergarten age kids always really enjoyed this project because it was a surprise when you revealed the symmetry print at the end.

Symmetry Butterfly art - finished butterfly symmetry painting pictured with paint on the side

Their eyes would always get so big with excitement!

Most of the tutorials online for symmetry painting tell you to draw a butterfly outline.

This always made me laugh because I am not naturally artistic.

So, to make your life easier, (and mine!) I’ve prepared free printable butterfly templates for your butterflies!

I created 4 different butterfly templates for you to choose from.

There are 2 different butterfly shapes both with and without the line of symmetry drawn on them.

Free Symmetry Butterfly Templates - 4 free butterfly templates for symmetry painting.

There’s a total of 4 different butterfly templates for this symmetry butterfly project, so that you can find the perfect one for your kids!

What is symmetry?

According to Super Simple , symmetry is when two parts of a whole are exactly identical.

You can say something is symmetrical if you can draw a line down it and each side looks the same.

They are mirror images of each other.

The line in the middle is called the Line of Symmetry.

An example of symmetry is a heart, because it has two identical sides.

This butterfly symmetry activity is a great way to introduce the concept of symmetry to little ones.

Kids will enjoy creating their own butterflies by painting the butterfly’s wings on one side and then folding on the lines of symmetry to print a symmetrical pattern on the other side of the piece of paper.

Symmetry Butterfly painting - an easy butterfly craft for kids! This butterfly painting craft is great for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Child shown making a butterfly symmetry painting.

Alright, let’s get started making our butterfly symmetry art!

Supplies for Butterfly Symmetry Painting

For this Butterfly Painting Symmetry project, you will need the following items:

  • Free Butterfly Symmetry Printable – Found at the end of this article
  • Kids Washable Paint – We love this paint by Crayola
  • Paper Plates
  • Q-Tips (or paint brushes)

How to make Symmetry Butterfly Art

First, print out the symmetry butterfly craft template of your choice.

Fold the paper at the line of symmetry, then flatten the page back to normal.

(Folding in advance makes it easier to fold over later).

Pour a variety of different colors of paint onto the paper plate for your child.

We are going to paint with Q-Tips today, but paint brushes will work as well.

Child painting a butterfly on one side of the line of symmetry

Show your child the line of symmetry. Tell them to only paint the left side of the butterfly.

(We are only painting half of a butterfly so that we can print the symmetrical butterfly image on the other side of the paper.)

The paint needs to be thick enough and wet enough to make a print on the other side.

So, encourage the children to paint a thick layer and to paint quickly because if they take too long, the paint will dry before they get to make their symmetry print.

Child folding the paper in half to make a symmetry butterfly painting.

Once they have painted the left side, help them to fold the right side over the left side.

Press the paper together, then assist them in opening the butterfly printable.

Kids will be amazed to see that their painting has been replicated onto the right side of the butterfly!

Finished Symmetry butterfly painting

And… that’s it! You’ve made a Symmetry Butterfly!

My little one loved this so much, she made a whole group of butterflies!

By the way, did you know a group of butterflies is officially called “a kaleidoscope.” Love that!

Get the Butterfly Symmetry Printable

To get the free symmetry butterfly craft template set, just click on the black download button below!

There’s a butterfly symmetry worksheet both with the symmetry line printed and a plain butterfly template without the line.

You’ll notice there are 2 different shapes of butterflies as well!

Simply choose the butterfly symmetry printable you think will work best for your children.

Each butterfly is perfectly centered on the page to make folding for the line of symmetry super easy.

My 4 year old preferred using the papers with the line of symmetry drawn on them for this project.

She liked knowing exactly where to stop painting.

The Math Salamanders have a large bank of free printable symmetry worksheets. Each symmetry sheet comes complete with answers for support.

Handy Hints

Each point or block that has been reflected must remain the same distance from the mirror line as the original point. So if point A is 3 squares away from the mirror line, then the reflection of point A must also be 3 squares away.

When reflecting a shape, look at the corners of the shape and reflect each corner first as a dot in the mirror line. The dots can then be joined up (in the correct order!)

For lines of symmetry at angles of 45°, it is often better to rotate your paper so that the line of symmetry is vertical or horizontal, and the rest of the paper is at an angle.

The basis and understanding of symmetry starts at about Grade 2, and then develops further in Grades 3,4 and 5.

Line Symmetry Worksheets

On this webpage you will find our range of line symmetry sheets for kids.

The sheets have been carefully graded with the easier sheets coming first. The first 3 worksheets involve only horizontal and vertical lines only. The next 3 worksheets involve reflecting diagonal lines as well.

There are also some templates at the end of this section for you to create your own shapes for your child to reflect, or, even better, for your child to create their own symmetric patterns!

Using these sheets will help your child to:

  • learn to reflect a shape in a vertical or horizontal mirror line;
  • learn to reflect a shape in both a vertical and horizontal mirror line;
