8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

People often assume that calligraphy and handwriting are synonymous, but they’re not. In general, calligraphy is comprised of stylized, embellished letters — it’s more art than writing. Conversely, handwriting refers to the style and technique that you use for everyday jotting. Handwriting needs to be quicker and more casual than calligraphy. While everyone has their own personal handwriting style, there’s always room for improvement! In this article, you’ll find eight tips to help you improve your handwriting in video and written form — plus a free worksheet.

How to Improve Your Handwriting: The Video

Let’s have a little chat about how to improve your handwriting! You’re invited into my snowy sunroom to talk about all the different ways you can make your penmanship a bit better:

How to Improve Your Handwriting: The Article

1. use a nice pen.

The adjective “nice” is subjective — you’ll have to hunt to find the pen that works for you! Right now, I’m loving Muji 0.38 mm pens because they’re responsive and write such a fine line. I like Sakura Gelly Roll white pens for writing on dark papers. Keep in mind that preferences change, though, and there’s always a new pen or pencil to discover.

Handwriting purists tend to love fountain pens, and I happily agree that my Pilot Falcon is fabulous. But, don’t be fooled into thinking that a pen will magically transform your handwriting. Yes, a nice pen helps, but it’s not the be-all, end-all of pretty penmanship.

2. Maintain a Relaxed Grip

A relaxed, fairly loose grip is one of the main things that will improve your handwriting. None of the muscles in your hand should feel tense or flexed, and your fingernails shouldn’t be white from squeezing the pen’s barrel.

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

Many people tend to clutch the pen, which will result in an achy hand and shaky writing. We often clutch without realizing we’re doing it, so try to mentally check yourself every few minutes to make sure you’re still holding the pen comfortably.

3. Improve Your Handwriting With Drills

Whether you plan on writing in cursive or print, it can be difficult to form nice letters without warming up. Doing a couple of simple drills will help you to write clear, confident characters. You can use the Drills section of the Improve Your Cursive Worksheet …

… Or you can doodle a few “telephone wires” or similar forms.

If you’re interested in additional drills, the Improve Your Handwriting Online Course features several helpful exercises! Handwriting drills tend to be simple but mighty, and the more you do them, the more of a difference you’ll notice.

4. Experiment with Paper Rotations

As children, we are generally taught to keep our paper in a vertical position in front of us. If that works for you, great! If not, feel free to experiment with different paper rotations. Keeping the paper at a certain angle can go a long way in helping you to improve your handwriting!

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

Many right-handed people are fine with the traditional vertical paper position, but I’m not one of them. I have always found it easier to write — particularly in cursive– when my paper has a severe counterclockwise rotation. Lefties should try rotating their paper clockwise. For clarification, see my How to Improve Your Handwriting video .

5. Practice with a Worksheet

If you want a structured way to improve your handwriting, I made a free worksheet for you! It’s three pages long and focuses on cursive writing — you can download it by clicking here . Basically, the worksheet takes you through drills, capital and lowercase letters, words, and sentences.

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

The cursive writing featured in the worksheet set isn’t any sort of formal style. Instead, it focuses on the letterforms that I, personally, use in everyday cursive handwriting. Those letters are easy to create, and they connect to each other beautifully to make for quick writing. For intensive exercises and instructions over how to write vintage-style cursive, check out TPK’s Elegant Cursive Handwriting Worksheet . It’s a fabulous investment if you want to infuse your penmanship with sophistication.

This delicately beautiful letter was written using a Pilot Falcon fountain pen and elegant cursive handwriting.

Here’s a list of all the structured handwriting worksheets and instructions that TPK has to offer:

  • Improve Your Cursive Worksheet Set – A free worksheet with helpful practice opportunities
  • Grammy’s Handwriting Exemplar – A free worksheet that offers letterforms based on my grandmother’s beautiful handwriting
  • Learn Cursive Worksheet for Kids (and Adults!) – A worksheet that teaches you how to write in cursive with the help of this free supplementary course
  • Elegant Cursive Handwriting Worksheet – A detailed worksheet set that teaches you how to write in elegant, vintage-style penmanship

6. Sneak in Practice to Improve Your Handwriting

Just like anything else, you will improve your handwriting with use. The more you write using good habits and implementing styles that appeal to you, the better your handwriting will get.

Elegant and Effective Letter Writing Tips | The Postman's Knock

You can get practice through a number of ways — for example, you might send someone a hand-written letter in place of an email or text. If you have the time and interest, you can start writing in a journal every night. Entries don’t have to be long; they can be short accounts of how your day went!

7. Write on Lined Paper or Use a Template

Writing nice, balanced words are a big shortcut to neat handwriting! If you want to write a letter to someone, you can put a piece of notebook paper under printer paper. More than likely, you’ll be able to see the notebook paper lines through the printer paper, and you can use those lines as guidelines for even writing. Or, if you don’t mind the lines, you can write someone a letter directly on notebook paper.

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

This point reminds me of another tip: always use a “padding” piece of paper. No matter what piece of paper you’re writing on, it should always have another piece of paper under it. For some reason, the slightly cushier surface provided by two pieces of paper makes it easier for all pens to write!

8. Embrace Your Personal Style

Handwriting is a very fluid, personal thing that is always evolving. It’s not like calligraphy, where you more or less write the same every time. Instead, you’ll have neat days, and you’ll have not-so-neat days (like the notes pictured below).

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

No matter how your handwriting looks, it is a wonderful reflection of you and your mood. That’s why people love receiving handwritten notes: they represent a piece of you! So, don’t get too hung up on a radical change: instead, focus on making clearly formed alphabet characters that are clear and legible.

How to Make a Beautiful Handwritten Note

I hope that you enjoyed this article, and that it inspires you to ditch the keyboard and write something by hand this weekend! Don’t forget that you can download the Improve Your Cursive Worksheet for free if you want a cursive refresher. It’s not a complicated little worksheet, and it should be helpful.

Thanks very, very much for reading TPK, and enjoy the rest of your day!

Here are 10 tips to follow to improve your handwriting:

1. Assess Your Current Handwriting

Before you attempt to improve your handwriting, let’s see where your current autography stands.

Write a paragraph on any subject of your choice. Try to use each letter in the alphabet and words of different lengths and structures. If you’re not up to writing something new, you can copy a paragraph from a book, but it should be several sentences long.

Read the paragraph over so you have a basic sense of what your handwriting is. Then take a pen and circle the letters that exhibit the primary shapes of your handwriting. You may write with a lot of hard corners, loops, or straight lines.

You should then take a look at the slant of your writing. Draw straight lines to see if your handwriting slants to one side or another. You should check the alignment of your letters, seeing if you write them at an angle to the lines.

Draw lines underneath the spaces between your words. There should be just enough space to fit another letter in between each word. However, the lines that form your letters should be straight and easy to read without taking too much space.

2. Look at Handwriting Styles and Calligraphy

You can take handwriting inspiration from people with better form. You can watch them while they write and emulate what they do to improve your own writing form.

Try to study people with different handwriting styles and fonts. For example, print handwriting (block letters) involves lifting the pen off the page with each letter, which can make letters neater. This is like hand lettering, where you focus on each letterform.

But you can also examine cursive writing, especially more modern forms of it. Cursive is a penmanship style where each letter of a single word connects with the next. Cursive writing is ideal for long-form texts, as you don’t need to lift the point of the writing utensil from the paper after each letter.

Calligraphy is the visual art of writing. Calligraphers try to produce the most visually appealing words possible, using pens and fancy ink to create their art. You can take inspiration from calligraphy styles to adapt your own handwriting style and create more pleasing letters.

3. Use a High-Quality Pen for Good Handwriting

There is no one pen that works for everybody, and there’s no writing instrument that specifically causes bad handwriting. In general, you want a pen that is easy to grip and manipulate with your fingertips.

Most people enjoy ballpoint pens with rounded tips. They are inexpensive and easy to use, but the ink may take some time to dry, especially on low-quality paper. Fountain pens are similar to ballpoint pens, as it has a metal nib on the tip to help apply the water-based ink.

If you want your ink to dry faster, you can use rollerball pens. They also have small and rounded tips, and they are roughly the same price as ballpoint products. Thin-tipped pens produce lines that may look neater than wide-tipped ones.

Gel pens have a thicker line width than the fountain pen, which makes it a better choice for writing big letters. And, of course, there’s the pencil, the popular school writing instrument from yesteryear. If you need to write neatly and have only one shot, a pencil might be a good idea, as an eraser can help you mend your mistakes.

4. Select Good Paper

Don’t forget to consider the paper when practicing handwriting improvement techniques!

Lined paper can make it easier for you to avoid slanting or misaligning your letters. You can get paper with wide lines so you have enough space to fit your letters, but don’t get sheets with very large spaces.

Your paper should be thick enough that your pen cannot break through it. Try to avoid using paper with a coating on it, as it can cause your hand to slide around.

You should always put a second piece of paper underneath the paper you are writing on. This gives your pen and hand additional support as you write.

5. Write on a Stable Surface

To improve handwriting, you need to improve your desk. If it wobbles, you should prop it against a wall or fix the legs so the desk stays sturdy. You can write while holding your paper against your legs, but you should fix your feet to the floor and sit in a good chair.

Give yourself plenty of space to move your hands and arms. You should clear a few inches around your paper so you don’t bump into anything. You should also remove any objects that can become damaged if the ink runs off the page. One elementary tip for great handwriting is keeping the pen on the page! 😉

You can hold your paper down with one hand. Hold it down in a corner with your fingertips rather than using the entire arm of your non-writing hand. Laying your hand across part of your paper limits the room you have and can cause the ink to smear.

6. Improve Your Posture to Improve Your Handwriting

Learning how to get better handwriting involves learning how to hold your writing instrument properly. And that means you should start by sitting with a good posture .

Your back should be straight with your feet flat on the floor. Your legs should be uncrossed, with your knees bent at right angles. If you have bad knees or if you feel cramps in your legs, you can stretch your legs out for a moment, but you should return to your posture as soon as possible.

Relax the muscles in your arms and shoulders before you start to write. You can stretch them above your head or out in front of you to ease your muscles. If your shoulders feel stiff, roll them and straighten the position of your neck.

Your other hand can remain down by your side or lay on your writing desk. Do not curve either of your arms around your paper, as you risk skewing the angle of your pen.

7. Grip Your Writing Utensils Well

There is no one pencil grip or writing grasp that everyone with nice handwriting has. But, if you learned a handwriting grasp in school, you probably learned the dynamic tripod grasp.

This involves gripping the barrel of your pen with your thumb and forefinger and using your middle finger as a support. Your fourth and fifth fingers stabilize the paper so it doesn’t move around as you write.

If your pen tends to shake as you grip it, you can try the lateral tripod method. Your thumb crosses the barrel of your pen, pinning it against your forefinger. This can give you more support, though it can strain your thumb.

In a dynamic quadrupod grasp, you grip your pen with your thumb and first three fingers. This is a good grip if you have weak fine motor skills and need additional support with holding your pen. The lateral quadrupod grasp is a similar grasp, but your thumb crosses over to hold your pen against your forefinger.

Just remember to use a relaxed grip, not grasping too tight, as you learn to improve your handwriting skills. A relaxed grip gives you more control, while a tight grip can lead to heavy pressure, causing poor line quality and writer’s cramp.

8. Practice Basic Shapes

Start by making waves, loops, semi-circles, and circles with your pen. You can trace lines or a basic shape, or you can draw on a blank sheet of paper. Look closely at your figures and individual strokes; start from scratch if they are too close together or crooked.

Feel free to get creative and make small doodles. Move your hand in different directions so you can stretch all of the tissues in your hand and practice making distinct shapes. With regular practice, you’ll improve your handwriting with consistent letterforms and aesthetically pleasing script!

9. Write Different Texts

Once you have basic shapes down, you can start practicing with words. Write your favorite quote multiple times on a sheet of blank paper. Write each line directly beneath the previous line so you can use a magnifying glass to compare how the two lines differ.

Switch things up from using all lowercase letters to all the letters capitalized to title case and back. Also, go from cursive letters to block letters and then back to cursive letters.

Pangrams are sentences that use each letter of the alphabet. Write a few pangrams so you can practice writing each letter. The most common pangram in English for handwriting practice is “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Another fun pangram you may enjoy writing is “How vexingly quick daft zebras jump!”

Make sure you practice special characters and punctuation in addition to letters as you improve your handwriting. An easy way to do that is to write mathematical formulas out.

Don’t worry about writing fast at the start. Focus on your written style first, then faster writing as you watch your handwriting improve. With daily practice and building up the muscle memory, you’ll have faster and better handwriting in no time!

10. Challenge Yourself

Take every opportunity you can to practice handwriting tips. When you need to take notes on something, use writing utensils and paper instead of your computer. Incorporate note-taking tips into your handwriting tips like using different colors to designate different subjects.

When you are writing for pleasure during your free time, practice writing words and sentences slowly . Slowing your pace down can make your written block letters straighter and your cursive script more legible. You can start a timer and try writing one sentence in more than 10 seconds.

If you can’t find opportunities to practice your handwriting, you should start a journal. Write at least one page every day talking about your life, thoughts, and desires, for example. Feel free to experiment with different types of journaling , like using a bullet journal.

Master How to Improve Handwriting

You can learn to improve your handwriting and cursive writing style in no time. Start by looking over your work and getting resources for good writing. You should get a pleasant-to-use writing utensil, practice sheets, and a desk where you can write.

Try out different grips and practice making basic shapes. Then increase the difficulty level, writing sentences and paragraphs with different combinations of letters. Take handwritten notes and branch out into journaling so you are always practicing.

We’ve all been there: you’re reviewing your lecture notes but can’t seem to make out your words as they run together and tilt off the page. It would be great if you didn’t have to decode your own writing, so is there any way you can make it better? Whether you’re trying to reign in unruly letters or get back your handwriting flair from years ago, we’ll show you the techniques to use to improve your handwriting. Read on to learn how!

Things You Should Know

  • Find handwriting inspiration online to develop your handwriting style. Copy your favorite letters to incorporate them into your writing.
  • Write out the alphabet to make your letters consistent. Then, practice writing full sentences.
  • Hand write things every chance you get. Write out work to-dos, school notes, start a journal, and send letters to friends.

Step 1 Write a paragraph...

  • Look at the size of your letters in relation to each other, too. Capital letters should be larger than lowercase ones, while tall letters like “t” should extend past small letters like “a.”

Step 8 Determine the areas that you want to improve.

  • You don’t have to adopt an entirely new style or copy someone else’s word for word. Just pick and choose certain aspects of different styles to incorporate the shapes and letters into your writing and make them your own.

Step 2 Find a comfortable grip on your pen or pencil.

  • Your general posture can help improve your writing, too. Wiggle your wrist to loosen it and relax your shoulders as you write.

Step 4 Study a directional...

  • When you find the type of pen or pencil you like, experiment with different lead sizes and pen tips to find what thickness makes your handwriting pop, too.

Step 6 Practice your alphabet.

  • If writing the same phrase over again gets tiring, write down some of your favorite quotes and song lyrics, or practice your own name.

Step 8 Handwrite things whenever you can.

  • To practice your writing every day, start a journal , make your to-do lists by hand, or complete handwriting practice sheets.

When someone asks, “How can I improve my handwriting?” they usually look for a few things they can easily implement to make their writing look more legible or presentable.

The problem is that handwriting is a habit deeply ingrained in both the mind and the muscles, so even a tiny change can be difficult to implement.

I’ve always taken a different approach to helping people with their handwriting, one that might require a little more time and commitment but gives the writer all the tools they need to take their handwriting as far as they like.

The approach is to first understand how handwriting works on a basic level, then apply that understanding to improve your own handwriting.

Sample of beautiful handwriting.

Understanding the Fundamentals of Handwriting

If you don’t understand how handwriting works fundamentally, you will always feel lost when trying to improve your handwriting, even if you are following the advice of a handwriting expert.

When you understand how handwriting works, everything becomes clear. You will know things like:

  • Why the letters have different heights
  • Why the letters are spaced the way they are
  • Why the letters have different forms yet work together to create a cohesive script
  • The way to position your body, hold the pen, and position the paper for optimal writing
  • Why someone’s handwriting is more legible or visually pleasing than another’s

I hope you can see that if you understand all the above, improving your handwriting will be a walk in the park.

So your first task, if you want to improve your handwriting, is to learn the fundamentals of handwriting.

The best way to do this is to study a proven handwriting system.

Any time-tested system will do. I recommend American Cursive because it is a beautiful, legible script.

I also have a  free course that will teach you everything you need to know  about American Cursive.

before and after image example of improved handwriting.

Regardless of what script you choose, by studying one, you will learn how handwriting works, and you will be able to apply what you’ve learned to any other script, including your own chicken scratch.

By studying a script like American Cursive, you will learn these important concepts and more:

  • Body position ,  pen grip , and  paper position
  • The grid , or how the lines printed on the page (and the imaginary ones that aren’t) work with the letters
  • How to write across the page
  • How a script builds on  fundamental strokes  and repeats those strokes throughout the alphabet

If you want a taste of how important the fundamentals are, I suggest you watch the video below titled “The Cursive Grid,” which is from my  free online cursive course .

What Do You Want Your Handwriting to Look Like?

When you study American Cursive or any other script, you will learn to write in that style, but that doesn’t mean your personal handwriting needs to look exactly like the script you are studying.

That said, traditional scripts like American Cursive were successful for a reason.

They evolved out of the culture in which they were created and have stood the test of time as legible, visually pleasing scripts.

You cannot go wrong by trying to emulate a traditional script, and no matter how hard you try, your script will always have personal quirks that are unique to you.

The great thing about studying a traditional script is that you have a very clear and defined vision to work towards.

Every traditional script has an exemplar, which is the ideal letterforms that comprise the script.

With an exemplar in hand, you know exactly what your goal is, and you can always compare your handwriting to the exemplar to see where you are falling short.

Exemplar of American Cursive Lowercase Letters

If you want your handwriting to have its own unique flavor, I suggest you at least find a traditional script to use as a base.

That way, you can take the exemplar from a traditional script and modify it to make it your own, which is much easier than creating an exemplar from scratch.

Of course, you can create one from scratch too, but it takes a lot of time to do it right, and the result won’t be as good unless you understand handwriting at a high level.

Let’s be clear, you need an exemplar. Without an image of the ideal letters, you will wander aimlessly and waste a lot of time while making little improvement.

Whether you are studying from the exemplar of a traditional script or your own unique creation, you will be armed with everything you need to improve your handwriting.

Cursive handwriting example.

You’ve Done the Work, Now Apply It

I know, I know.

You’ve already done a lot of work.

Learning the fundamentals of handwriting is no small task and creating your own exemplar takes time too.

The good news is that your handwriting will already look much better by this point.

That’s because your understanding of handwriting is naturally solving the problems with your handwriting without you having to do anything except pay attention while you write.

Of course, there are more active things you can do to improve your handwriting at this stage.

When you understand the fundamentals, improving your handwriting is a straightforward process –

  • identify errors,
  • and figure out why you are making the errors.

If you can see an error in your writing and then understand exactly why you are making that error, resolving the error is pretty easy.

Here’s an example.

As you can see, our friend’s handwriting here is very cramped in the horizontal direction.

Fixing this is pretty easy because he’s done the work and understands the basics of handwriting.

Our friend was able to fix this problem because he understands that spacing is controlled by the movement of the hand and that movement is limited by the hand’s range of motion.

He is trying to write too many letters without picking up his hand and moving it to the right.

The problem was easily solved by pausing more often to move the hand and continue writing with proper spacing.

This is just one example of how improving your handwriting works when you have an understanding of the fundamentals.

You have all the tools to identify, analyze, and resolve issues with your handwriting.

How much you want to improve your handwriting is up to you.

Handwriting example.

As you improve your handwriting, the errors in your writing will become less noticeable to the average person.

However, you will see more and more errors in your writing.

This is because when you are studying handwriting, you are training your eye to see errors, which allows you to see the more subtle errors that previously escaped your eye.

The only way to end this process is to become satisfied with your handwriting or keep working on it for the rest of your life.

Should you become satisfied with your handwriting, writing regularly will maintain it.

6 Simple Steps to Improve Your Handwriting as an Adult

Improve your handwriting steps

Table of Contents

You love the idea of hand lettering and calligraphy. But if your penmanship is embarrassing, how do you improve your handwriting so that you can create hand lettering art you’re proud of?

You’re definitely not alone in the poor handwriting category. Many people struggle with their penmanship and want to improve their handwriting as an adult. The good news? You can practice and improve your handwriting quickly.

In this post, we’ll explore 6 steps to improve your handwriting as an adult, including:

  • Analyze your handwriting
  • Focus on consistency
  • Experiment with writing utensils
  • Learn traditional calligraphy
  • Practice—a LOT.

Continue reading for more details on these steps to improve your handwriting!

First Things First: Why You Might Want to Improve Your Handwriting as an Adult

Maybe you’re looking to monetize your hand lettering hobby, or maybe you just want to be able to send a handwritten thank you note that looks like it was written by an adult.

You might even be experiencing judgment from coworkers if your handwriting is illegible or looks like a 5-year old did it.

Improving your handwriting will not only make your writing legible, it will also bring about confidence in your work. As a result, you’ll also be taken more seriously.

And if you’re on this Lettering League site, chances are you might want to improve your coordination so you can use your penmanship to:

  • Create a bullet journal that is post-worthy
  • Master your hand lettering skills
  • Have more hand control when drawing

Improving your handwriting does take LOTS of practice, especially focused practice. Most importantly, you will need to slow down—even the best hand letterers and calligraphers take their time when working on their craft!

First, analyze your handwriting

Before you can improve your handwriting, you first need to do a full audit of your writing.

Write a paragraph or two on paper by copying some text out of a book or from your phone. The more you write, the more you’ll be able to see patterns (good and bad). Take your time, but also try to write at your normal pace.

Once you’re done, you can start to analyze some things about your writing that you wish to improve:

  • Spacing : Spacing between letters should be consistent, and spacing between words should also match up!
  • Slant : Does the slant of your letters match, or is it all over the place, tilting left and then tilting right?
  • Style : Are your letters formed the same, or does your style go all over the place?
  • Height of letters : The heights of the lower case letters should all match up, and same with upper case letters.
  • Consistent baseline for letters : Do your words line up on the bottom, or does it bounce around and go astray?
  • Closing counters : I’m totally guilty of this one… when rushing, do you leave your O’s and similar letters open?
  • Dotting your i’s : And cross your T’s… blah blah blah.

Once your hand recovers from writing so much (ouch!) try writing the same passage again, paying attention to what you want to improve. Here you can see improvements in my writing already. Sure, it took me longer, but the payoff is worth it!

Improve your handwriting by writing more

As a digital society, we tend to stick to our computers and phones when writing notes and emails. Our hand muscles for writing and drawing are going unused! Muscle memory is important for anything we do, even writing with pen and paper. If you don’t have regular practice, you’re going to have a harder time writing neatly.

Taking 10-15 minutes each day to write neatly and slowly  can vastly improve your handwriting. Schedule time into your calendar to write a page or two (like right after a meal or when you wake up). Write as neatly as you can, about anything. Maybe even kill two birds with one stone by keeping a daily handwritten journal.

I personally have managed to vastly improve my handwriting as an adult by journaling and taking notes on my iPad Pro .

Focus on Consistency to Improve Your Handwriting

Consistency is key. No matter what style you practice of your own handwriting, whether it’s cursive or not, you want to find a set of letter styles that you like to write and that look good together.

Practice with varying slopes and angles, heights of your letters, roundness of letters, etc. Once you start to see a style pattern in your handwriting, practice the same letter over and over again (literally fill one page with a’s and then the next with b’s) until you start to feel comfortable.

For slants, you can even create your own angled calligraphy guide and place it under your paper to practice.

Experiment with Pens and Writing Utensils to Maximize Your Handwriting Improvement

There are seemingly countless brands and types of pens and writing utensils available. It’s up to you to find the style of pen that works best for the level of control, line thickness, pressure, and preference you prefer.

For example, some gel pens are too slippery and move too fast. A super fine pen may not work for someone with a heavy hand. Cheaper ballpoint pens may be clumpy and messy.

For basic handwriting, I prefer fine felt tip markers over any other type of writing utensil, because they provide more friction on the paper and help me slow down. You can even practice with an old fashioned #2 pencil in order to help you slow down to improve your handwriting.

Recently, my favorite pens for beautiful handwriting include:

  • The Pilot G2 for faster writing on more textured paper
  • The Zebra F301 for slower writing on smoother paper

Learn Traditional Calligraphy to Improve Your Handwriting Skills

I know this seems counter-intuitive. It’s like I’m telling you to run before you can walk. However, I saw vast improvements with my hand lettering after I studied calligraphy. Learning how to form letters traditionally can help you understand consistency and anatomy.

My recommendation: learn basic strokes of brush calligraphy .

Grab a calligraphy book that isn’t for pointed-pen calligraphy (I recommend Calligraphy for Dummies ) and a $1 grid composition book or cheap graph paper. Studying this book helped me slow down (super important!!) and focus on consistent letterforms.

Finally, Practice. Practice. Practice.

I can’t stress how important regular practice is! If improving your handwriting sounds like a chore to you, try to make it fun:

  • Journal daily—with pen and paper.
  • Write letters to your friends (because really, everyone would love to receive a handwritten letter!).
  • Write out your grocery list as neatly as possible.
  • Leave handwritten notes in your kids’ lunches.
  • Take notes—even sketchnotes—when listening to a podcast or watching an educational YouTube video.
  • Start a bullet journal.

Even if you can’t dedicate time to daily practice, make it a point to write neatly for everything  you write down—notes at work or school, filling out forms, etc.

All in all, slow down, pay attention, and work to find the handwriting style that is best for you, along with your preferred pen type and paper combination.

What are some ways you’re going to try to improve your handwriting?

Thanks to the popularity of texting, many think having good penmanship is a thing of the past -- but that may not necessarily be a good thing.

According to a 2012 study , writing something down by hand stimulates your brain. Researchers showed 5-year-old kids, who had not yet learned to read or write, a letter or a shape on an index card and asked them to reproduce it in one of three ways -- to draw it freehand, trace it using dots or type it on a computer.

I asked for some sugar cookies with goodbye written on them in different languages and this is what I received!

Kids who wrote the letter or shape freehand had increased activity in areas of the brain that are activated in adults when they read and write. Kids who traced or typed did not.

“When we write, a unique neural circuit is automatically activated,” Stanislas Dehaene, a psychologist at the Collège de France in Paris, told The New York Times . “There is a core recognition of the gesture in the written word, a sort of recognition by mental simulation in your brain.”

My sister's handwriting is pretty neat.
I used to study Japanese and this is how I would prep myself before a Kanji exam

Who knew writing something made your brain so …

How I Improve My Handwriting: Spencerian Penmanship

The art of penmanship is alive and well! Here’s how I used the Spencerian Penmanship system to improved my cursive for  handwritten letters and my journal.

How I Improved My Handwriting with Spencerian Penmanship| pageflutter.com | Spencerian cursive is a lovely and practical penmanship program for journaling and handwritten letters.

|How I Improve My Handwriting: Spencerian Penmanship|

The journaling community understands the importance of good handwriting. The sheer popularity of the #RockYourHandwriting Instagram challenge shows how many people still value the handwritten word.

Why Handwriting Still Matters

Fine handwriting makes our personal journals more pleasing to revisit. When we send a letter to a friend, it is the penmanship that conveys the message, giving richness and tone to each word on the page. It’s true that our day-to-day lives are ruled largely by computers, but there’s still something distinctly authentic and intentional about putting pen to paper.

As I became more aware of my handwriting through journaling, I saw small improvements. Still, I wanted to find a handwriting guide that would give my letters that little something extra. Enter, The Spencerian Penmanship Program !

How I Improved My Handwriting: Spencerian Penmanship| pageflutter.com | Spencerian cursive is a lovely and practical penmanship program for journaling and handwritten letters.

What is “Spencerian Penmanship”?

In short, Spencer was a man obsessed with penmanship (lucky for us). His “Spencerian Script” became the standard for teaching students handwriting in the mid-1800s. It remained popular until the early 1900s, when the more basic Palmer method gained favor (if you grew up in the U.S., you likely learned a version of Palmer’s cursive in third grade).

Spencerian script is known for combining beauty and practicality, and I couldn’t resist a peek into the Victorian years with these books!

How I Improved My Handwriting: Spencerian Penmanship| pageflutter.com | Spencerian cursive is a lovely and practical penmanship program for journaling and handwritten letters.

I ordered a complete set of the books on Amazon. It comes with  1 Theory book and 5 Copy books. ** NOTE: There are sets on Amazon that don’t include everything! It is vey important that the theory book and all 5 copy books be used together . One is useless without the others. My links take you to the complete set .

  • The Theory Book:  Covers everything from the proper way to sit, to the ideal slant for your script ( precisely 52 degrees to the right, thank you very much).

This set is a reprint of the original Spencerian texts, so the culture of the time period comes through loud & clear! I’ve enjoyed the lessons enormously, but I can’t help chuckling at phrases like, “those who do not wish to become hollow-chested or round-shouldered, should learn to sit easily upright, and keep the shoulders square.”

I can just imagine the ruler-wielding teacher telling everyone to sit up straight!

Don’t Buy the Books Until You Read This

Lots of people love working through the program like I did, using the complete set of books.

But if that doesn’t sound ideal to you, Skillshare has a Spencerian Penmanship course (plus other cursive handwriting courses).

A note for my left-handed friends: This book is straight from the days when left-handedness was considered undesirable. Be prepared to do some creative adjustments, as the instructions are only written for the right hand. I wish the publishers would have corrected the oversight when they republished, but alas, they didn’t.

*UPDATE: My very kind reader, Maria, send me a link to some left-handed calligraphy resources . They are a good place to start if the Spencerian books don’t address your concerns.

How I Improved My Handwriting: Spencerian Penmanship| pageflutter.com | Spencerian cursive is a lovely and practical penmanship program for journaling and handwritten letters.

  • Five Copy Books:  The copy books are lined practice books. The first book has short drills on line and curve formation, finding the correct angle, spacing, and so forth. Each copy book fulfills specific lesson sets, so they’re all a little different.

How I Improved My Handwriting: Spencerian Penmanship| pageflutter.com | Spencerian cursive is a lovely and practical penmanship program for journaling and handwritten letters.

The photo above shows how Copy Book #1 is ruled.

The Theory book provides details on how to form each letter, and the copy books gives examples and drills to practice each pen movement.

Each copy book is ruled differently, since you’ll need less guidance as your script improves. The photo below shows copy book #5, which provides ruled pages and practice phrases for the final exercises.

How I Improved My Handwriting: Spencerian Penmanship| pageflutter.com | Spencerian cursive is a lovely and practical penmanship program for journaling and handwritten letters.

Before You Begin…

You’ll need a few things to transform your handwriting with the Spencerian system. Luckily, the list is short:

  • A copy of  Spencerian Penmanship System, Theory book & all 5 copy books  (goes without saying)
  • Your printable practice sheets (scroll down for the link)
  • Plain yellow legal pads  – They’re cheap and they work. Win, win!
  • Rhodia graph paper notepads  – while you’re learning to form your letters, you might like the extra reference lines of graph paper.
  • Rhodia lined notepad – Rhodia is great for fountain pen users, so you’ll get crisp lines as you practice.
  • Pilot Metropolitan (Medium) – This is the one I used in the photos below because I wanted a nice dark line for you to see.
  • Lamy Safari (Extra-Fine) – For my own practice, I prefer a finer pen. The Lamy Safari is an affordable option for a high-quality pen.
  • Speedball Calligraphy set – If you want the full experience of Spencerian penmanship, a dip pen is the way to go. I have the Speedball set, which I supplemented with some higher-end nibs . For a beginner like me, it’s a great option.

Printable Practice Sheets

I read through most of the theory book before I began the practice drills. But when I opened my copy books, I couldn’t bring myself to write in them! I was afraid I would run out of pages before I mastered the pen strokes.

So…I created a PRINTABLE with a page for each book!

How I Improved My Handwriting: Spencerian Penmanship| pageflutter.com | Spencerian cursive is a lovely and practical penmanship program for journaling and handwritten letters.

The printable has 5 different pages: one to supplement each copy book. You can print as many as you need to master the skills in each copy book!

** Grab your free Spencerian practice sheets HERE **

I’ve enjoyed these books so much, and I can’t wait to get some beautiful letters in the mail! I hope you enjoy them. Have a great week!

I have this set and I am afraid to write in them too! LOL Thank You SO much for making the printable sheets! I’m a lefty so it is going to be rather challenging.

' src=

You’re so welcome! It really is a great set. I’ll be interested to know how you adjust the techniques for your left-handedness. I have a lefty child, and I am always at a loss for how to help him with his writing. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments, Julia! 🙂

' src=

And that’s on my Amazon wishlist… I’m trying as many different techniques of improving my handwriting as I can so I’m always interested in another! 🙂

That’s great, Cassie; I’ve changed my handwriting a few times in my life, so it definitely can be done! Thanks for stopping at my blog & I hope you keep me updated on your journey into Spencerian script. 🙂

' src=

I hadn’t heard of it before, but it looks like what I have been looking for as I would love to improve my handwriting, so it has now been promptly added to my ever increasing wishlist 🙂 Plus thank you for the printables!

My pleasure, Paula! I hope you find these books as enjoyable as I have. There’s something so lovely and nostalgic about finely written words.

I remember thinking my grandmother’s handwriting was so elegant. She would have been a school girl in the 1890s, so this would have been the way she learned. I learned ‘Palmer’ style and really miss all the ‘flourishes’ that went away in the switch between Spencer and Palmer.

Now they don’t teach cursive at all in school. Sad.

It breaks my heart that children don’t learn cursive anymore. I know schools had to make room for typing (which is essential in today’s world), but penmanship still matters! Thanks for your comment and for sharing your memory of your grandmother. 🙂

' src=

I’m currently in high school, so I’m still considered a “kid” (lol much to the chagrin of me and my fellow teenagers). However, with all of this talk of kids not learning cursive anymore, I’m really thankful that the elementary school I went to still taught cursive. I’m not sure about the current situation, and it was nothing fancy by any means, but it has set a good, strong foundation for learning calligraphy (and just writing fancily in general).

Mae-Mae, you are so fortunate to have attended a school that taught cursive! Some schools still teach it, but fewer and fewer each year. Most of them have replaced cursive with typing (although I never had typing class in elementary and I can still type like a madwoman…most kids pick it up on their own nowadays.) I’m so glad you’ve been able to channel your cursive skills into calligraphy. It’s a beautiful art!

' src=

If you print these and laminate them you can practice with a fine point dry erase marker and reuse the sheet over & over again.

What a great suggestion! Thank you for sharing your idea. 🙂

Hello! I’m a complete newbie and a leftie to boot! I can already tell that my “angle” is either 90 degrees straight up or leaning to the left! Can you offer any suggestions or resources for me to learn to adapt?

I have a left-handed child, so I’m always on the lookout for resources! One of the very best hand lettering artist I know is a leftie, and you can see her in action at bydawnnicole.com. I also scrounged up a link for you, some advice from 5 left-handed calligraphers: https://piecescalligraphy.com/2015/09/13/calligraphy-tips-for-lefties/

Calligraphy is essentially PhD-level cursive, so their advice will be better than anything I could offer. I hope that helps! Keep me updated on your cursive progress. ????

Thank you so much for your generosity in replying. I’m aware of Dawn Nicole Designs but will definitely follow your link!

' src=

This looks awesome! Definitely going on my holiday wish list! Just a quick question though- since you have the free printable templates, then why buy the full set of practice books? Why not just buy the one main book and then use the printable templates for practicing? (Unless I’m misunderstanding?) Do the other 4 books have something that the printable templates don’t have? It’s just that money is tight right now so I don’t want to buy anything I don’t have to!

Hi, Nicole! The copy books have some information in the covers that the theory book doesn’t. I always recommend the full set, but Amazon does sell them separately. The theory book would be enough to get you started and you could invest in the copy books later when budgets are a less tight. Hope that helps!

' src=

Thank you, Celeste!

' src=

Genius!!! Thank you Thank you!!!! I ran out of pages for the early strokes and don’t want to buy new books.

You’re so welcome! That’s exactly why I made them. I knew I would run out of pages before I had mastered the skills. 🙂

' src=

Can you suggest a non-fountain pen for this?

' src=

Hi, Sheri! I really like a fine-tipped gel pen like Energels or Inkjoy. The Inkjoys are available in fine, too. I’ll link them here (affiliates). Energels: http://amzn.to/2pUyHvC Inkjoy (Medium, 0.7): http://amzn.to/2pUUDGO Inkjoy (Fine, 0.5): http://amzn.to/2qR1Ox0

How to Improve Your Handwriting

Written on November 27th, 2020 by D. T. Grimes

“It’s such a shame that they don’t even teach kids cursive in school anymore…”

is the first thing that most people say to me when they find out what I do for a living. Ironically, I don’t have a strong opinion about kids learning cursive. I learned most of what I know about penmanship in my early 20’s.

When I was in middle school, we were told that high school teachers wouldn’t even accept papers that weren’t written in cursive . This was a lie. All through my young adult life, handwriting became less and less important. Eventually, it served only as the way that I filled out forms at the doctor’s office or signed my credit card receipts.

One day, I decided that it was something I really wanted to improve about myself. Up to that point, I’d just resolved myself to have bad handwriting. In some ways, I didn’t believe that I was capable of anything else, but now I know I just didn’t have the right spark of interest. This article aims to provide that spark for anyone looking to improve their penmanship as an adult.

A hand dilligently working to improve its penmanship

1) Why do I want to improve my handwriting ability?

Not everyone is interested in pursuing penmanship to a professional degree. Some just want to have a better signature, others more professional handwriting for the workplace. There are even those who’d like to improve their handwriting as a means of personal development or something akin to meditation. I don’t believe that any reason is nobler than the next, but it can be helpful to have an idea of what’s spurring on your newfound interest.

Each of us has unique needs for our writing and different tastes and opinions about what good writing should look like. One thing is for certain: our writing is seen as some kind of a reflection of ourselves and it does affect what people think about us and the information we use it to convey (Morris 2014). Is that reason enough to invest the effort necessary to improve? I’ll let you be the judge of that.

No course of action can be methodically undertaken until the motivations behind it are clearly identified. Handwriting is a discipline where a methodical approach will result in a much greater return on the time you invest into it. Remember: The first step to understanding how to improve your handwriting is to clearly define why you’d like to.

2) I know my goal. Where do I start?

From the tools you use to the method you study , you have decisions to make as a budding penman. Measure each commitment by how it helps you achieve your goals. Consider your effort towards better handwriting akin to a choose your own adventure novel; the choices you make provide you with unique experiences within which your pursuit of better writing will either flourish or stagnate. I don’t mean to paralyze you with indecision; merely to encourage you to ask questions and be thoughtful . Handwriting is filled with more rabbit holes than most penmen like myself prefer to admit.

The caveat to this “question everything” mantra lies in the topic of materials . Many students desire to acquire the absolute best pen, paper, and ink as soon as possible under the assumption that better materials equate to better results. While this is true in some circumstances, it’s rarely so in penmanship—even at the height of professional work. Experience, insight, and thorough training are far more valuable than the most popular fountain pen and a shimmering, golden ink.

My advice to you: Don’t look for shortcuts. There are no surefire ways to achieve true excellence in writing that work every time for every student. Progress is won through hard work and determination.

3) What are the characteristics of a good handwriting style?

First of all, “ good writing ” erroneously implies that there’s some kind of consensus among the literate people of the world as to what makes handwriting legible, aesthetically pleasing, functional, or any other number of desirable qualities.

Good writing is going to mean something different to almost everyone. Instead of trying to define what the individual letterforms and shapes of good writing should be, let’s think more about what kinds of ideas and techniques can lend to our writing serving us better .

What are the universal truths which can be applied to almost any kind of writing that improve it as a tool for communicating with others and recording our thoughts?

Rapidity, legibility, and ease

A generally accepted trinity of desirable qualities in the penmanship ethos is that of rapidity, legibility, and ease . Writing styles that possess these three qualities are likely considered “good” by the general public. Similar to the old saying about “ good, fast, and cheap” , certain styles de-emphasize one of these three aspects in favor of the other two. Some styles may be legible and rapid , but not easy , easy and rapid , but not legible , etc.

Ideally, we’re able to obtain all three through a methodical approach, untiring effort, and a strong desire to see our handwriting improve.

A venn diagram showing the three ingredients necessary to improve your handwriting.

If you consider your current handwriting ability, you can likely determine which of these three characteristics you are most lacking in. Below, we’ll go through some generalized advice about how to shore up weak spots in your technique and lead you towards higher satisfaction in your quest to improve. While many of these talking points are relevant for both print and cursive styles, this guide is written from with a slight cursive-centric bias.

3a) Gaining Rapidity

One marker of useful handwriting is that it can be produced rapidly. As humans, we think and speak at much faster rates than we are capable of handwriting. The average handwriting speed of adults is around 20 words per minute (wpm). Even award-winning typists are only able to achieve slightly over 200 wpm (the average person clocks in at just around 40). By comparison, the average English-speaker speaks at about 150 wpm, and the average listener can comprehend around 400 wpm.

George Hossfield's fingers are the fastest fingers in the world

George Hossfield became the World’s Champion Typist in 1929 with a staggering 135 wpm on the mechanical typewriter shown above. This record has since been broken, but it provides some insight into the necessity of a rapid handwriting, doesn’t it?

If handwriting is meant to be a tool used to record thought, then surely we can agree upon the value of reducing the discrepancy between our ability to receive information (through listening or thinking ) and our ability to encode information into our handwriting .

How can I speed up my handwriting?

Certain types of handwriting emphasize smoothness and rhythm as a means of attaining speed. In the case of cursive (from Latin “ cursus ” or, “to run”), the hand typically does not lift from the page, but flows from one letter into the next through what are known as “connective strokes”. The reduction of interruptions and disturbances in the written line typically increases the speed at which letters can be formed by the writer.

Over the last century, a majority of penmen have advocated a strong, fluid arm movement driven by the larger, more easily coordinated muscles of the upper arm, shoulder, chest, and back as a primary origin of the forces used to move the writing tool.

These techniques stand in stark contrast to the typical finger and wrist writing that many children are taught to use in their first exposures to handwriting. Writing with the arm allows for a penman to execute any letter using a simple gesture rather than crafting it meticulously using individual strokes. By using the gross motor skills associated with larger muscles to drive the stylus, the writer exposes themselves to less strain and increases their endurance and speed greatly.

A demonstration of arm movement. Note the elevation of the wrist from the surface of the paper and the lack of movement in the fingers. When using arm movement for writing, the arm oscillates on the muscle of the forearm directly in front of the right elbow.

Observe your own handwriting at a faster-than-usual speed. Do you notice that your movements are emanating from the arm rather than the fingers? If not, how long can you write at a high speed using the fingers, exclusively? To a discerning student, the endurance benefits of using the arm should be apparent.

Fluidity as well as speed

When you begin thinking about how to reduce your over-reliance on the fingers in your writing, you’ll often end up stumbling across movement exercises aimed at developing the muscular memory necessary for fluid movement. These drills adorn the beginning pages of nearly every practical cursive book from the last century.

E. C. Mills Movement Drills from his 1903 book Modern Business Penmanship

Movement Exercises, Edward Mills, 1903

This muscle memory is cultivated through a regular practice of a gamut of exercises aimed at producing specific patterns to a given tempo. A cursory glance at any number of historic penmanship manuals shows that writers have been thinking about the speed at which the pen should move for hundreds of years—often citing a certain number of “downstrokes” each minute. So too should we, but to what end?

These numbers give us some idea of the rate at which we should move the pen across the page, during practice , but our best contemporary writers slow down significantly when producing their finest work, known as “model” or “copy” hands . As a result, we’re left confused regarding differences between the speeds required to develop movement and the optimal rate at which it is utilized in both every-day and model writing.

I asked my friend and colleague Michael Gebhart for his thoughts surrounding speed in the context of practice, performance, and demonstrative environments:

“I would only recommend practicing fast writing once legibility and rhythm have been secured. And even then we must be careful to not make a habit of writing fast, but to build up speed methodically by way of dedicated practice and conscious muscle memory training. Most writers will develop speed naturally over time without thinking about it—this kind of rote “practice” will always result in a messy and imprecise pathway towards faster writing. Muscle memory is a powerful thing and has a way of sticking around even against our better judgement. Better to be in control of the habit building from the beginning.” (Gebhart, Message to author, November 25th, 2020)

It is not likely that a certain speed will be best suited for every person attempting to improve their handwriting. Nor do I hope to insinuate that the acquisition of a faster technique should overshadow your pursuits towards increased legibility or belabor the execution of your chosen hand. The importance of speed versus rhythm in Gebhart’s words highlights a critical aspect of developing usable handwriting: it should be methodical, smooth, and easily orchestrated—which in turn leads to it being fast . In this circumstance, the old swimmer’s adage applies: slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

There is a balancing act to consider, and our goal should be to achieve as much as possible in regards to improving speed without introducing adverse effects elsewhere in our writing. Illegible writing is nearly useless, no matter how quickly it is produced.

While arm movement tends to be more commonly applied to cursive writing than print, many of the same concepts regarding arm movement can be applied to both. The important take-away is that large muscles tire less quickly than smaller ones, and they also tend to be easier to coordinate, resulting in a faster, more fluid writing experience.

3b) Improving Legibility

Of course, it doesn’t matter how quickly one can write if what is written cannot be read. Speed and legibility are often envisioned at opposite ends of a spectrum, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be that way. To some degree, this dichotomy is managed by carefully electing where increased speed comes from, and at what costs (if any) to the tenets of legible writing.

It should be understood that legibility is a somewhat subjective quality that relies heavily on the familiarity of the reader with the styles and letterforms being utilized in a specimen of writing. Readers who were never taught to print may find certain styles difficult to decode, while others may believe that cursive always looks like a pile of spaghetti. Don’t be fooled by the belief that any particular style of handwriting is legible to everyone. Instead, let’s focus again on general concepts that can be used across-the-board to improve legibility, as that is a more efficient use of our energy.

Legibility is influenced by several factors when it comes to handwriting. Endeavor to cultivate these attributes in your work and it will typically improve in the eyes of most people you come into contact with.

Pursue regular and familiar shapes

Reading is a type of pattern recognition . The writer takes information that is within their mind and encodes it upon a piece of paper by utilizing a system of consistently formed shapes to represent phonetic sounds. The reader then recognizes these characters and uses them to access their memory for the sound associated with each letterform. Legibility influences the speed at which a shape may be seen, recognized, decoded, and stored in memory. The more recognizable a letterform is, the more legible it tends to be.

Maintaining consistent letterforms requires the reader to become accustomed to fewer shapes present within a specimen of writing and allows them to parse the information from it more efficiently as their experience with it increases. Shape idiosyncrasies can be thought of as a writer’s “accent”. As long as a writer is consistent within their own system, the accent soon disappears to the reader. It is only when a new letterform is introduced that the reader is forced to recognize the writer’s accent again, which can be distracting and therefore harmful to legibility.

A photo of apricots to help with the penmanship accent analogy.

Apricots, by the talented Sophie Louisnard . I’d have taken my own photo, but it turns out apricots are a summer fruit so I couldn’t find any locally. Typical.

For example, there are two common ways to pronounce the word “ apricot “. The first is to use the long a “ape-ricot” and the second is to use the short a “a-pruh-cot”. Both pronunciations are generally considered correct and relate to the same idea, but depending on which version you grew up with, an extra step of translation might be required before you can conjure forth in your mind a small stone fruit. Think back to the last time you heard someone say a word like “apricot” using a pronunciation that you don’t use yourself. Isn’t it jarring when a word doesn’t work as efficiently it’s supposed to?

This cognitive lag when a reader is trying to determine what type of letter they’re reading is something to be avoided in a general sense. By reducing the differences between each instance of the forms used in your handwriting, you are decreasing the effort it takes for readers to decode it.

This also applies to what are considered standard forms , or those typically understood as standard models by the general public. If you employ an unconventional variation of the letter p , the reader might still struggle to understand your script even if you are mechanically consistent with all of the other unconventional p ‘s you use on the page. Try to show the reader something they expect, and your legibility will increase dramatically.

Maintain a consistent slant

There are numerous acceptable slants in writing. It’s been debated by professional penmen for almost a century that one style is more acceptable to teach children, or for business use, or faster than another. The truth is that each slant has its own benefits and aesthetic quality. Deciding the right slant for you is a question best asked with a bit of experience under your belt, so don’t be too keen to settle on one slant right now as if you’ll stick to it for the rest of your life.

Whatever slant you choose, make it regular . Aim to keep all of the downstrokes in each of your letterforms as close to the slant as possible. Doing so will give your writing a uniform appearance and does not tire the eyes of the reader as they move across the page. One good tip to evaluate your own work is to take a page of your writing and hold it up to your eye so that you can look across the surface from the lower-corner along whatever slant you choose. From this angle, you will be able to see letters where you are regularly off of your slant in the same way a carpenter determines if a board is crooked.

The easiest way to manage slant is to rotate the paper so that all downstrokes are pulled directly towards the center of your chest. For a typical right-handed writer, this would mean that while writing vertically, the baseline is parallel to the edge of the table. While writing forward-leaning script the paper should be rotated so that the baseline departs from the writer to the right. For a backslant style, the orientation should be the opposite.

As far as slant is concerned, as in many things, extremes should be avoided . There is a safe zone inclined to the right and left of vertical where writing’s legibility is not affected negatively by the chosen slant of the writer. Too much in either direction, however, and the work becomes condensed and difficult to read.

Develop even spacing

Similar to the way our eyes recognize consistent shapes within our letterforms, the space found between one letter and the next controls the rhythm and legibility of our writing to readers. By considering the white space between letters, we can see our writing as black marks separated by white spaces akin to the planks and spaces of a picket fence. Doing so makes it a bit easier to understand the importance of careful spacing. You wouldn’t want to build a fence with uneven slats would you?

The distance that letters, words, and lines are placed apart from one another has a lot to do with the effort required to read a page of handwriting. Take care to make sure that you evenly distribute the letters within your words and watch out for tricky letters that might need a bit more or less space than usual. Do your best to make sure that lines are spaced widely enough that the various portions of ascenders and descenders do not conflict with one another. Remain vigilant for scenarios where momentum might carry your pen between forms excitedly at the cost of the appropriate amount of lateral space.

One strength of cursive is that the letters tend to only be separated from one word to the next. In instances where poor spacing is applied, readers still have a good chance of corretly determining which word a group of letters belongs to. In print styles, lateral spacing errors can be more catastrophic as the reader must determine which word letters belong to in certain circumstances.

3c) Keeping it Easy

A final hallmark of a good handwriting style is that it does not require a magnificent effort to create. Certain types of calligraphy are laborious to assemble into writing. While beautiful, these styles of lettering should be avoided where utility is concerned.

Good, easy handwriting requires less strain on the body to produce, and can thus be sustained for a longer period of time without needing to rest. Proponents of arm movement declare that using larger muscles like those in the shoulder, chest, and back can help to alleviate the strain placed on the smaller muscles of the fingers, wrist, and forearm reducing what is commonly known as “ writer’s cramp ”.

Proper posture, position, lighting, and the development of smooth movement allow the writer to produce letters with ease. In turn, more mental energy is reserved to direct towards legibility and speed. An easy handwriting style is one that is not in the way. It may seem obvious, but sometimes the best solution to cramped, untidy, difficult handwriting is to make it as simple as possible and try to relax .

Improve your handwriting by adopting a healthful writing position

Penman W. R. Stolte of the Commercial High School, Providence, RI, demonstrates the correct position for business writing. How does yours compare?

“The first important problem to be considered in learning to write is the development of a natural, healthful position…it will be observed that muscular relaxation is absolutely necessary and is acquired only through a natural position. A natural writing position is one which is suited to your individual case. This is found to be logical when you observe how persons differ in size and weight. We could hardly expect, and it would be useless to advocate, the same position from a rather corpulent fellow and one of the “bean pole” type…” (Stolte 1927).

Simplifying your writing can be accomplished by a number of methods. The easiest way is to audit the forms that you tend to use and look for places where you can reduce their complexity without decreasing their recognizability . Small details like serifs and tails can be skipped altogether as they are unnecessary when it comes to letter recognition.

What type of writing feels the easiest to you will depend on many different personal, subjective factors. Similar to how a fast, illegible style is useless, a style that you do not enjoy writing or reading due to its over-simplification or sterile aesthetic is unlikely to be one that you spend the effort to cultivate. Find something that you like the look of, that you can systematize, and that takes no great strain on you to create.

This guide will help to inform you as you undertake this rewarding discipline, whatever style of writing you choose to pursue. By establishing clear goals early on and avoiding the trappings typically associated with getting started in a new pursuit, you’ll be well poised to tackle your handwriting improvement methodically and efficiently. Through continuous assessment of your handwriting against the tenets of rapidiy, legibility, and ease , you can strategically approach your practice in an informed and productive manner.

All progress in writing is made in single strokes. As the days of your life have joined together to create your memories, each stroke adds its strength to the legion penned before it; developing you slowly but surely into the penman you hope to become.

Very.good handwriting .

I was in 7th grade inn 1959. Every kid wrote cursive script. How, I do not remember, but I decided to write all block upper case letters with, since the teachers seemed to hve thing about capitalization, caps just bigger. I was a straight A student ad the wimpiest boy you would ever see outside the funnies page of your local newspaper. The teacher apparently did not know what to do. As an A student he apparently decided not to try to flunk me. So he THREATENED me tha while I might get away with it in school I would never be able to keep up in college. He was a large man: a lacrosse coach. I cowered in my little student desk. Finally he took his body away and I have kept writing all block upper case letters now for over 60 years, including graduating Yale summa cum laude along the way. I will never understand what his problem with himself was. But there was a problem: my writing could no longer be graded. The teacher can’t take off points for an undotted ‘i’ when ‘I’ has no dot. It was the only thing in my life whre I was not doing something I was being told what to do by the adults. So it gave me a tiny bit of feeling I was an individual person with a little bit of agency. Had the teacher beat me back into curcive writing I probalby would never have had any sense of self worth or hope for the rest of my life: Passum sub iugum. As for writing speed, they never taught us kids shorthand. Mine may be a unique case, but I feet I have a right to life, too. I wan’t hurting anybody, but I was assserting individual initiative which I guess the adults could not handle. They wanted “A” students. I got A’s but did not want to be graded at all. So, for me, handwriing was a really “big thing”. Whenever I write anything by hand, I always think that it’s something I desiged myself, not just doing something other people conditioned the child I was to be. I also did not plesae the teachers by doing all my math assignments in indelible ink. I do not like to write with a pencil. These days I use a Cross classic ballpoint pen — same as the one the man at the top of this page is using.

Powerful Tips To Lift Your Writing To the Next Level

Posted: September 23, 2023 | Last updated: September 23, 2023

<p><span>Most of us aren’t lucky enough to land <a href="https://partnersinfire.com/lifestyle/dream-job/" rel="noopener">dream jobs</a> or work in industries that align with our passions. Instead, we take jobs we don’t like and, if lucky, have a little free time to do what we love. </span></p><p><span>While scrolling through my favorite Reddit community, R/Askreddit, I stumbled upon a question seeking to discover why more people don’t follow their dreams. </span></p><p><span>The answers, though unsurprising, showcase some of the problems inherent in our current system. </span></p>

Everyone wants to write the next great American novel until they sit down and discover that writing is hard!

It takes a particular skill and mindset to craft an intriguing story and write in a way others will appreciate. On the plus side, it’s a skill anyone can learn. While scrolling through a fantastic writing community on Reddit, I found a great question asking writing enthusiasts to share the best advice they ever received on how to improve their writing.

Use some of this advice to practice your craft and become a better writer.

Write Often

They say practice makes perfect, and the same is true for writing. The more you write, the better you will become.

“ Get in the habit of writing as often as you can,” shared one user, adding, “you’ll get nothing done if you wait to be inspired.”

<p>Need more help being productive? <a href="https://partnersinfire.com/lifestyle/books-for-productivity/">Here are 11 of the top books on productivity to help you get more done</a>. </p>

To be a great author, you should learn from the greats (and not so greats.) Devour as many books as possible to taste different genres , writing styles, and techniques. Discover through reading what works and what doesn’t.

“I got into a big writer’s block with all options and ideas. Reading really dug me out; I understood what I liked, what I didn’t, reminded me why I wanted to write,” admitted one commenter.

<p><span>Holidays are ideal for learning about our history and culture. Take the opportunity to teach your kids about the pilgrims, natives, and the true story of Thanksgiving.</span></p><p><span>Don’t neglect the negatives as they do in school. Showing the whole story, warts and all, will help your kids understand the mistakes of the past and help them build a better future.</span></p>

Write What You Want to Read

“When I first started in writing, I took any gig I could to make ends meet, and rarely was I writing about something that interested me, and my god, could you tell,” explained one user.

Although you have to do what you have to do to make ends meet, the best stories will be the ones you’re excited about writing.

<p><span>Someone volunteered, “My faith in humanity.” Another agreed, “So true. Before, you just had a heavy suspicion that fools surrounded you. Now, you have the depressing certainty. It sucks.” </span></p><p><span>A third confessed, “Some dark corners of the internet make me really hate people. And I’d like to know if the internet ruined people or enabled us to see how terrible people are.”</span></p>

Don’t Judge Your First Draft

First drafts are drafts for a reason. They aren’t going to be good. “It should be really bad!” exclaimed one user, discussing the quality of first drafts.

The user went on to give a great lesson for all aspiring writers that they heard elsewhere “Every first draft is perfect because the only purpose of a first draft is to exist,” they said, explaining, “if you wrote and finished a first draft, you did it perfectly.”

<p><span>Everyone wants a partner they can trust. Even white lies can spell doom for a budding relationship. </span></p><p><span>If you want a successful partnership, embrace honesty, even when it’s hard. The only things that you should ever lie about are surprises. </span></p>

Character Develop is Vital

Compelling characters are critical to a great story . “Flat characters are way too common these days, even in ‘professionally’ made stuff,” lamented one user.

Others said you need to make your characters want something and make them change as the story develops. “In the end, make sure they have undergone some change,” advised one Redditor, “even if they didn’t get what they wanted.”

<p><span>There are lots of ways to</span><a href="https://partnersinfire.com/blog/10-awesome-ways-to-save-money-on-groceries/"><span> save money at the grocery store</span></a><span>. You can clip coupons, compare prices per unit, use the store’s loyalty program, and choose </span><a href="https://partnersinfire.com/lifestyle/5-things-to-never-buy-generic/"><span>generic offerings</span></a><span>. Limiting unhealthy snacks and skipping sugar-laden soft drinks will also save you a bundle – and are better for your overall health.</span></p><h3><b>Getting Help</b></h3><p><span>If you’re truly strapped, consider going to a food bank. Numerous charities offer food to households in need. However, please don’t use a <a href="https://partnersinfire.com/lifestyle/relationships/wife-leaves-husband-because-he-gets-groceries-at-the-food-bank/" rel="noopener">food bank if you can afford to buy your own groceries</a>. </span></p>

Understand When Inspiration Happens

One user shared words of wisdom from acclaimed author Madeleine L’Engle “Inspiration usually comes during work rather than before it.”

You need to start. It’s unlikely a random spark of inspiration will hit while you’re twiddling your thumbs, waiting for it. Get started, and you’ll be surprised by how quickly the words flow.

<p><span>Sometimes it takes a conscious effort to make yourself productive. You must tell yourself what you will do and stop yourself from getting distracted.</span></p> <p><span>Here are ten things that will help you achieve that:</span></p>

How many stories have you started but not finished? “You don’t know what the story really is until you finish it.” shared one user.

Don’t leave your stories hanging. You may discover a gem of an idea hidden in your initial story’s ending.

<p><span>What’s a warning that everyone should heed? For example, don’t eat yellow snow. It’s basic. It’s stupid, but it’s accurate. After polling the internet, here are the top-voted warnings.</span></p>

Stop Caring About Politeness

One user shared a gem they picked up from Stephen King’s best-selling resource On Writing .

“If you expect to succeed as a writer, rudeness should be the second-to-least of your concerns. The least of all should be polite society and what it expects. If you intend to write as truthfully as you can, your days as a member of polite society are numbered, anyway,” King said in the book.

When writing, you need to be truthful. You need to dig deep into the vast darkness of humanity and showcase what you’ve found, flaws and all. If you avoid the truth to appease the pearl cultures, you’ll never be successful as a writer.

<p><span>Some writers try to mimic the popular stories of their time. How many aspiring writers attempted to emulate the success of works like </span><i><span>Harry Potter</span></i><span>, </span><i><span>Twilight</span></i><span>, and the </span><i><span>Hunger Games</span></i><span> to disappointing results?</span></p><p><span>“You’ll never make a splash by just doing what everyone else is doing,” advised one user, adding, “If you’re not passionate about something, then it usually shows in the writing.”</span></p><p><span>Write the story you want to write, regardless of current trends. Your passion for your story will shine through. </span></p>

Don’t Worry About What’s “Hot”

Some writers try to mimic the popular stories of their time. How many aspiring writers attempted to emulate the success of works like Harry Potter , Twilight , and the Hunger Games to disappointing results?

“You’ll never make a splash by just doing what everyone else is doing,” advised one user, adding, “If you’re not passionate about something, then it usually shows in the writing.”

Write the story you want to write, regardless of current trends. Your passion for your story will shine through.

<p><span>Getting things perfect seems like a standard to strive for, but perfection has a downside. Some folks get so obsessed with perfection that they never finish anything. </span></p><p><span>Perfection is really the enemy of progress. </span></p>

Perfection is the Enemy of Progress

“Stop trying to make it perfect and just write!” exclaimed one user.

Your writing will never be perfect. Nothing we do in life will be perfect. Perfect is an unachievable goal that gives people an excuse not to accomplish anything.

Instead, just write. Write horribly at first. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you’re doing it. The more you do it, the better you will get at it. If writing is worth doing to you, it should be worth doing poorly .

Show, Don’t Tell

Show, don’t tell is one of the biggest rules of literature. One aspiring writer in the thread said it prevents them from writing a boring story and helps them expand their vocabulary.

You don’t need to explain everything in a book. Show the reader what’s happening through action and dialogue, don’t describe it.

<p><span>Homer wrote the Greek epics </span><i><span>The Odyssey</span></i><span> and the </span><i><span>Illiad</span></i><span>, while Sun Tzu authored </span><i><span>The Art of War</span></i><span>. </span></p><p><span>But is that true?</span></p><p><span>Reddit users claim there’s no historical record of either author outside these books, and most were compiled centuries after they supposedly lived. The works are likely compilations from various authors accredited to a single source. </span></p>

Use Flourish

Great authors use literary devices to enhance their writing and story telling. Try incorporating some of t hese 25 literary devices into your story .

<p><span>Creative writing allows you to explore the world of your imagination. Put pen to paper and let the characters running around in your head come to life.</span></p> <p><span>Creative writing allows you to build worlds or make a statement about modern society. It lets you dig deep into your subconscious and unleash your inner dreams and desires.</span></p> <p><span>The best part about picking up creative writing as an artistic hobby is a cost. All you need is a pen and paper. If you need help developing ideas, you can use a <a href="https://partnersinfire.com/passion-fire-2/creative-writing-prompts/" rel="noopener">creative writing prompt</a> to get your juices flowing.</span></p>

Creative Writing Prompts

If you’re struggling to come up with a great tale, use a prompt to help. Creative writing prompts can spark your creativity .

<p><span>Sometimes, we are so overwhelmed with everything in our heads that we can’t focus on the most critical task. We might need help to determine what that task is!</span></p> <p><span>A</span><a href="https://partnersinfire.com/lifestyle/brain-dump/"> <span>brain dump</span></a><span> can help. It’s a system of getting everything floating in your head out on paper. Getting your thoughts on paper will help you organize them and stay focused on what is essential. </span></p>

The Most Compelling Characters in Fiction

Consider popular character archeotypes when writing your tale. Dungeons & Dragons chaotic neutral alignment makes great characters .

<p><span>The internet is a fantastic source of knowledge and entertainment. It’s filled with resources to help you learn, create, and relax. </span></p> <p><span>The vastness of the internet has one shocking limitation: with so much content, it’s hard to find valuable resources online. Therefore, I was delighted to see a thread in my favorite Reddit sub, R/Askreddit, asking users to share their favorite fun, free internet resources. </span></p> <p><span>You may be shocked at how many cool things you could have gotten for free online!</span></p>

Writing is Tough, But Practice Makes Perfect

You can be a great writer. The Reddit thread is filled with advice to help you on your journey, but the most important thing you can do is start.

Write that first chapter. Develop engaging characters. Revisit your story and revise your drafts. Before you know it, you will have a fantastic tale you’ll be proud to share.
