17 essential YouTube keyboard shortcuts to use while browsing and watching videos

  • You can use YouTube keyboard shortcuts to easily navigate the platform and control your video playback.
  • Aside from the well-known spacebar shortcut that allows you to pause or unpause a video, there are a number of other useful shortcuts.
  • For instance, you can use keyboard shortcuts to speed up or slow down a video, or open a mini-player and browse the rest of YouTube while you watch.
  • Visit Business Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories .

YouTube , the premier platform for watching and sharing videos on the internet, is a well-loved part of our culture today, and has been making innovations to the online video player since its inception.

You can do a lot of things with YouTube's video player already — most people know that pressing the spacebar will pause and unpause your video, and anybody with media buttons on their keyboards likely knows what they do based on the labels alone.

However, you may not know that there are actually a multitude of keyboard shortcuts available on YouTube, some of which provide functions that are otherwise not accessible on the platform.

YouTube keyboard shortcuts

  • Pause/Play the video: Spacebar or K
  • Mute/Unmute the video: M
  • Skip 5 seconds forward/back in a video: Left/Right arrows
  • Skip 10 seconds forward in a video: J
  • Skip 10 seconds back in a video: L
  • Skip to the next frame when the video is paused: Comma ","
  • Skip to the previous frame when the video is paused: Period "."
  • Speed up/slow down video playback: < or >
  • Skip to the first or last seconds of a video: Home or End key on the seekbar
  • Increase/Decrease video volume by 5%: Up/Down arrows
  • Skip to a different point in the video: 0-9 on the seekbar

Note: The number you press correlates to the percentage of the video that the playbar will skip to. For example, 0 will return you to the beginning of the video, and 5 will take you to the halfway point, or 50%. This will only work with the numbers on the seekbar, not the ones on the numeric keypad.

  • Click in search bar: forward slash "/"
  • Take the video in and out of full screen mode: F
  • Turn closed captions on and off, if available: C
  • While watching a playlist, return to the previous video on the list: Shift-P
  • While watching a playlist, skip to the next video on the list: Shift-N

Note: If you're not watching a playlist, it will skip to YouTube's next recommended video.

  • Open a YouTube mini-player in the bottom right corner of the screen: i

Note: The video will play while you continue to browse YouTube.

Learn YouTube Keyboard Shortcuts Like a Pro – Frame-by-Frame, Repeat, Playback Speed, Subtitles, and More

YouTube is now the most-used website on the web. But few people know the handy keyboard shortcuts that can make you a YouTube Power User.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to feel like a maestro behind a keyboard while watching YouTube.

These keyboard shortcuts are much faster than clicking around in YouTube's menus. And they also give you fine-grained control of your viewing experience.

How to Show the Official Shortcuts Table While on YouTube

YouTube has a nice table view of some of its shortcuts. You can pop this up at any time while watching a video by pressing shift + / .

Here's what it looks like:

YouTube's official list of shortcuts. (You can pop this up at any time by pressing shift+/)

You can dismiss this popup by hitting the escape key.

I'm showing you this first, so you'll remember that it exists and can reference it.

But if you really want to learn all of these shortcuts, I recommend you bookmark this article. Because I'm going to teach you a lot of secret shortcuts that YouTube doesn't list in this table as well. ?

The 11 Most Important YouTube Keyboard Shortcuts for Day-to-Day Use

I'm going to introduce these keyboard shortcuts in order of importance, and how much time they can save you.

Keyboard Shortcut #1: How to Select the Search box Using a Hotkey

You can jump straight to the search box in YouTube's navigation anytime you want by hitting the / key.

YouTube's search box, which you can access at any time with the / key.

This is extremely convenient, because you can just hit / then start typing your query, all in one motion, without needing to use your mouse.

And did you know that you can use the up and down arrows to select a search result? Just hit the return key to run the selected search.

You can use the up and down arrows to select a search query to run.

You can collapse the search box and its search predictions dropdown menu by hitting the escape key.

Keyboard Shortcut #2: How to Pause and Unpause a YouTube Video with a Hotkey

You can pause and unpause a video by pressing the space bar or the k key.

Keyboard Shortcut #3: How to go Full Screen on YouTube Using a Hotkey

You can go full screen at any time by pressing the f key. And you can get out of full screen by hitting the f key again (or hitting the escape key).

Keyboard Shortcut #4: How to Mute a YouTube video

You can mute YouTube at any time by pressing the m key.

You can unmute by then hitting m a second time.

Keyboard Shortcut #5: How to Speed Up a Video or Slow it Down by Changing the Playback Speed

YouTube offers 8 playback speed options:

_1__Mitch_Murder_-_Salary_Man_Simulator_OST_-_YouTube_---3

This is an important feature for a few reasons:

  • If you are in a hurry, you can watch YouTube at a faster rate and save time. I personally watch most videos at 2.0x speed.
  • But if the video is in a language you don't know very well, you may want to watch it slower. For example, whenever I watch videos in Non-English languages like Spanish or Japanese, I may slow it down to 0.75x or 0.5x speed so it's easier to understand what people are saying.
  • If you are learning a musical instrument, slowing down the video speed can make it much easier to keep up with the teacher and follow along, or read musical notes. I often start a piece of music at 0.5x speed, then advance it to 0.75x speed and eventually normal speed.
  • You can turn any 80s pop song into a Vaporwave song by slowing it down to 0.5x speed. It's safer than hitting yourself in the head. ?

You can access these speed controls by clicking the YouTube gear, then choosing "playback speed" and changing it from there. But this requires 3 or 4 clicks.

It's much faster to use the playback speed control hotkeys:

  • press shift + . to speed up a video by 25%
  • press shift + , to slow down a video by 25%

You can just hold the hotkey down to max out to 2.0x, or or min out the speed at 0.25x.

Keyboard Shortcut #6: How to Advance a YouTube Video Frame-by-Frame or Go Back a Frame

YouTube lets you step through videos frame-by-frame if you want to.

First, press the space bar or k to pause the video. Then press . to go forward a frame, or , to go back a frame.

If you hold down one of these keys, you'll make your own super slow mode or super slow rewind effect, which can be kind of fun with sports videos.

Keyboard Shortcut #7: How to Restart the YouTube Video at the Beginning, or Jump Forward

You can use the numbers 0 - 9 to jump to different points in a YouTube video.

Pressing 0 will restart the video, and pressing 5 will jump to the exact middle of the video. Pressing 9 will take you to the final 10% of the video.

Keyboard Shortcut #8: How to Turn on Closed Captions or Subtitles

Some YouTube videos have auto-generated closed captions for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

These can also be helpful if you're watching a video in your non-native language. They can also turn a YouTube viewing session into an impromptu karaoke session.

You can toggle these on or off at any time by pressing the c key.

_1__Billy_Idol_-_Dancing_With_Myself__Official_Music_Video__-_YouTube_--

You can change the language of the captions, too. But to do this you'll need to use your mouse and click the gear icon.

Keyboard Shortcut #9: How to Rewind or Fast Forward 5 Seconds (or 10 Seconds)

You can use the left and right arrows to rewind or fast forward 10 seconds. You can hold these down to jump past entire sections of the video (or use the number hotkeys I introduced a moment ago).

These arrow keys jump forward and backward exactly 5 seconds.

But did you know you can also jump forward and backward in 10 second increments of time? You can do this with the j and l keys, respectively.

One way to easily remember this is to treat the j , k , and l buttons as rewind, pause/play, and fast-forward, respectively.

It's kind of silly that YouTube has two different methods for this, but as a keyboard shortcut aficionado, I'm not complaining.

Keyboard Shortcut #10: How to Turn Up and Turn Down the Volume of a YouTube Video

Sure, Your keyboard may have its own volume controls. But what if you want to just turn down a YouTube video's volume so you can listen to some jams during an over-long Zoom call?

Well YouTube gives you an easy way to adjust the volume for just YouTube videos: the up and down arrows.

There are 20 different volumes you can listen to YouTube at (5% increments).

Keyboard Shortcut #11: How to Play the Up Next Video (or Next Video in a Playlist)

If you hit shift + n you can skip the current video entirely and start playing YouTube's "Up Next" video.

If you happen to be watching a playlist, this will take you to the next video in the playlist.

And as a little bonus hotkey: if you happen to be in the middle of a playlist, you can hit shift + p to move to the previous video in the playlist.

And now that I've covered those helpful keyboard shortcuts, here are a few helpful shortcuts that will require you to use the mouse.

How to Access YouTube's Secret Right Click Menu

YouTube also has a secret right-click menu. This is different from your browser's normal right-click menu, and only shows up when you right-click a video itself.

How to Put a YouTube Video on Repeat Using the Loop Option

If you right-click a video, YouTube will give you the option of turning on "Loop." This will cause the video to repeat over and over until you close the tab or turn the option off.

This is a helpful feature for when you want to listen to a song or album over and over (like I am while writing this.)

Mitch_Murder_-_Salary_Man_Simulator_OST_-_YouTube

How to Access YouTube Video Stats for Nerds

YouTube also gives you quite granular data on your network speed and video playback.

You can access these stats by right-clicking the video then choosing "Stats for nerds" from the drop-down menu.

For example, you can see the current resolution of the YouTube video, your current connection speed, volume, and "buffer health."

YouTube doesn't have much in the way of how Buffer Health is calculated, but it seems to represent how well the video is able to pre-load with your current connection.

YouTube Keyboard Shortcuts can save you so much time if you practice with them.

I hope these tips will help you save time and feel more powerful while using YouTube.

The YouTube video and window must be active. If these keys are not working, click the video to make sure it is selected. Switching between windows, changing tabs in your browser, or performing other actions like making a comment unselects the video.

Press spacebar or K on your keyboard to play and pause a video.

Holding down either of these keys also plays the video in slow motion.

Pressing 0 (zero) key on your keyboard jumps to the beginning of a video. The Home keyboard key also works for jumping to the start of a video.

Pressing the number keys from 1 to 9 seeks (jumps) to that percentage of the video. In other words, 1 jumps to 10%, 2 jumps to 20%, 3 jumps to 30%, etc.

Change video playback speed

To decrease the playback speed of a video, hold down Shift and press , ( comma ) key .

Yes, YouTube has a number of keyboard shortcuts, and if you are watching YouTube videos on your computer, all the shortcut keys can come in handy for you. That way, you can use your keyboard as a remote control for your computer and just press a few keys to go to your favourite video and watch it. Additionally, if you are enjoying YouTube videos sitting on the couch, you can get a small and cheap wireless portable keyboard and use it as a remote control to watch your favourite videos on YouTube without even touching the mouse. youtube shortcuts

You can just press the / key anytime you want to search anything on YouTube and you will be directed to the search bar immediately.

After you have searched, you can browse the results by using the up and down arrow keys and use the Return key to run the selected video.

There are 8 playback speed options offered by YouTube:

To access these speed controls you have to first click on the YouTube gear icon, then choose the "playback speed" option and then you can change it from there. But this seems to be a lengthy process, especially when there are easier keyboard shortcuts available.

Instead, you can use the playback speed control hotkeys/shortcuts:

Press Shift + . to increase the playback speed of a video by 25%

Press Shift + , to decrease the playback speed of a video by 25%

If you just hold the relevant hotkey for long you can max out to 2.0x or reach the minimum speed of 0.25x .

6. Advancing a YouTube Video Frame-by-Frame or Go back a Frame

Youtube video frame by frame

You can step through the YouTube videos frame-by-frame if that is what you want.

For this just press, the "Space Bar" or "K" first to pause the video and then press "." key to go forward a frame, or "," key to go a frame back.

You can hold any of these keys to make a super slow or super slow rewind effect of your own.

7. Shortcut to Restart the YouTube Video or Jump Forward

You can jump to different points in a YouTube video using the number keys 0-9 .

If you press "0" the video will restart, pressing "5" will make you jump to exactly the middle of the video , similarly pressing "9" will take you to the ending 10% of the video. I hope you get the idea.

8. Turning on Closed Captions or Subtitles

When you are watching a foreign film or any video where the language is tough to understand, you certainly prefer to watch with the subtitles on.

You can toggle the subtitles or captions using your keyboard by pressing the "C" key .

But if you want to change the language of the captions you have to go to the Gear icon and change it from the Subtitles option.

9. Shortcut to Rewind or Fast Forward YouTube video by 5 Seconds

To jump forward and backward (rewind) in a YouTube video you can use the right and left arrows respectively. If you want to jump past entire sections of the video you can just hold down these buttons.

These will make you jump five seconds backward or forward at a time.

10. Shortcut to Turn Up and Down the Volume of a YouTube Video

You can adjust the sound of your video very easily on YouTube using just the keyboard, i.e. by pressing the up and down arrow keys .

You can listen to YouTube at 20 different volumes at 5% increments.

11. Playing the Up Next Video (or Next Video in a Playlist)

You can play the "Up Next" video on YouTube by hitting " Shift + N" and skipping the current video entirely.

If you are watching some video on a playlist this will take you to the next song in the playlist.

YouTube Mouse Shortcuts

There are also a couple of shortcuts that are helpful but accessed with the mouse. To see the available options, right click on the Mouse and you will see the menu with many different options like shown in the image below.

Accessing YouTube's right-click menu

You will find that when you right-click on a video on YouTube some different menus appear which are different from the normal menus and which give you some extra features for the Video.

For instance, you can right-click on the YouTube video and choose the loop option to keep repeating the video on a loop, over and over again.

We hope you enjoy watching videos on YouTube and use these shortcuts to make your life easier while enjoying YouTube videos. Just like YouTube all the major video streaming websites have Keyboard shortcuts. All you have to do is look for them.

How To Change Browser Tabs With A Simple Keyboard Shortcut

T hey're not for everyone, but for most of us, once you get used to using keyboard shortcuts on your computer, it's hard to imagine ever not having used them. Copying, cutting, and pasting have become so inextricably linked to their keyboard shortcuts that the meaning of, for example, "control + C" is treated as common knowledge among computer users that can be easily integrated into memes. It's still far from universal, though, with the awareness gap being easy fodder for mischief-makers who might tell someone using Windows to press ctrl + alt + delete while misleading them about what it really does.

There are some areas of computer use where, if you're not using keyboard shortcuts, you're missing out, and web browsing is one of them. In particular, navigating between tabs gets a lot easier if you commit the relevant keyboard shortcuts to your muscle memory. Until you don't have to do it nearly as much, you don't appreciate how much more onerous pointing and clicking feels. These shortcuts are universal across all browsers and, with one slight modification, across operating systems as well, so no matter what your preferred browser and/or OS is, this quick shortcut will work for you.

Let's take a look at the various keyboard shortcuts that are available -- and more or less universal -- for switching browser tabs.

Read more: Major PC Monitor Brands Ranked Worst To Best

Actual Keyboard Shortcuts For Switching Tabs

Some shortcuts vary by the browser and/or operating system, while some are more universal. For switching between tabs, the way that is completely universal across desktop/notebook browsers and operating systems is control + tab to move to the next tab to the right and control + shift + tab to move to the tab to the left. Depending on what type of computer you're using, though, this might not be the optimal shortcut. Thankfully, there are alternatives.

On Macs, the control key is not in the same position it's in on a typical PC keyboard, so control + tab or control + shift + tab can be a bit awkward to use. Instead, the command key is in its place and is the key central to the most common keyboard shortcuts on Macs . (For example, command + C is the copy function on a Mac instead of control + C.) Thankfully, there are alternatives that you can use across all platforms -- understanding that they use control on Windows/Linux and command on macOS -- that accomplish the same task as control + tab and its derivatives.

The first alternate way to switch tabs is control/command + page down to go to the next tab to the right, while substituting page up will move you to the left. Don't worry if you're on a Macbook or similar keyboard layout and don't have page up/page down keys, though, because there's a third option for Mac users: Control/command + ] to move to the next tab to the right and substituting [ to move to the left.

Additional Tab-Switching Keyboard Shortcuts

There are a few more tricks where the above came from. One lesser-known shortcut, that works across all browsers, allows you to use the number keys to cycle through the first eight (sometimes nine, depending on the operating system and/or browser) tabs that you have open, with the numbering being based on where they appear left to right. For this, the keyboard shortcut is control/command + whichever number corresponds to the tab in question. There's one exception to this, though: The Linux version of Firefox uses the alt key instead of control/command.

Another keyboard shortcut allows you to go back through previously closed tabs . While control/command + T is the universal keyboard shortcut for a new tab, control/command + shift + T cycles back through your previously closed tabs one by one, reopening them starting with the most recently closed one.

You can also use keyboard shortcuts along with clicking links to open them in new tabs. Control/command + left click opens the link in a new tab but keeps your current tab active while loading the new one. However, if you want the browser to immediately switch over to the new tab, then you should instead use control/command + shift + left click.

When you don't need to type, you can use your Magic Keyboard Folio in other configurations .

Use function keys, keyboard shortcuts, and the trackpad

Magic Keyboard Folio has a 14-key function row, including an escape key, 12 function keys, and a key to lock the screen. The function keys control many features on your iPad. For example, you can press the keys with speaker icons to adjust the volume.

You can use keyboard shortcuts to perform commands on your iPad. Most keyboard shortcuts use the Command ⌘ key, like a Mac. If you're more familiar with a PC keyboard, the Command ⌘ key does the same thing as the Control key on a PC.

More ways to configure your Magic Keyboard Folio

You can configure your Magic Keyboard Folio in several ways when you don't need to use the physical keyboard and trackpad.

Flip the keyboard behind your iPad

You can flip the keyboard around, so that it's in the back, facing away from your iPad. Key presses don't register in this mode.

You can still use the stand to prop up your iPad to watch a movie or play a game. If you need to type, you can always use the software keyboard .

Switch to software keyboard

You might need to use the software keyboard that appears on your iPad display, instead of the physical keyboard, to do things like type accented characters or use dictation.

keyboard button

If your iPad doesn't detect your Magic Keyboard Folio or an "Accessory not supported" alert appears on your iPad, make sure that there's no debris or plastic covering on the Smart Connector pins on the keyboard or the Smart Connector on your iPad. Also, try these steps:

Make sure that your iPad and Magic Keyboard Folio are connected and that you have the latest version of iPadOS .

Remove the keyboard from your iPad and then reconnect it.

If your iPad still doesn't detect your Magic Keyboard Folio, restart your iPad.

* Magic Keyboard Folio contains magnets that hold your iPad securely in place. Avoid placing cards that store information on a magnetic strip — such as credit cards or hotel key cards — on the inside of Magic Keyboard Folio or between your iPad and Magic Keyboard Folio. Such contact might demagnetize the card.

A tiny robot on the space station will simulate remote-controlled surgery up there

Sean Crimmins, a senior in engineering at the University of Nebraska, loads the robotic arm into its case on Aug. 11 before a shake test.

The robot is small in size but its aspirations are out of this world — literally.

MIRA, which stands for miniaturized in vivo robotic assistant, recently became the first surgical robot at the International Space Station.

The tiny robot, which weighs about 2 pounds, arrived at the space station on Feb. 1. Over the next few weeks, the robotic assistant will practice operating in zero gravity.

Developers plan to use MIRA to conduct a surgical simulation via remote-controlled technology, with a surgeon directing its movements 250 miles away from Nebraska.

"The tasks mimic surgical tissue with tension that allows a dissection to be performed," a University of Nebraska release explained. The robot "will use its left arm to grasp, and its right arm to cut, much like a human surgeon in a hospital operating room."

Doctors Learn The Nuts And Bolts Of Robotic Surgery

The robot was developed by Virtual Incision Corporation, based in Lincoln, Neb. It was also made possible through a partnership between NASA and the University of Nebraska.

The space mission can potentially help pave the way for medicine in long-distance space travel, but the inventors of MIRA hope their version of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) will make the greatest difference for health care on Earth, particularly in areas that lack access to a local surgeon.

"When we started this work at the University of Nebraska, we shared a collective vision that miniRAS could make robotic-assisted surgery available to any patient, any time, anywhere," said Shane Farritor, Virtual Incision's co-founder. "Exploring the use of miniRAS in extreme environments helps our teams understand how we can remove barriers for patients."

The goal is for MIRA to be controlled by a surgeon through a console. From there, the surgeon can direct the robot's camera and instruments inside a patient's body. MIRA's inventors say it could be game changing in rural areas and in military battlefields.

Health care has a massive carbon footprint. These doctors are trying to change that

NPR's Climate Week: A Search For Solutions

Health care has a massive carbon footprint. these doctors are trying to change that.

The real-world application explains MIRA's size. Virtual Incision said RAS technology tend to be big and clunky, so the company wanted to design a device that would be easy to transport, store and set up.

Farritor and his colleagues have been developing MIRA for nearly two decades. MIRA is scheduled to return to Earth in the spring.
