Revoke and reassign license
- 1 year ago 11 March 2022
Good morning I wanted information.
I have a vmware environment and with veaam I backup the VMs.
I wanted to know how I can remove an esx host from veeam licenses and thus freeing 2 sockets assign the license to another esx host. attached in file 1 I want to revoke socket for 172.40.0.14 and I want to assign it to another esx host that is managed by the same vcenter. kind regards

Just select the 172.40.0.14 host and click the Revoke button. You don’t need to manually assign a license to the other host, this happens automatically as soon as you create a backup of a workload running on that host.

Assigning License Keys
You can assign license keys internally or to managed resellers and companies. When you assign a license key, VCSP Pulse creates a license for the company and returns created license ID.
To assign license keys:
- Log in to Veeam Service Provider Console .
For details, see Accessing Veeam Service Provider Console .
- At the top right corner of the Veeam Service Provider Console window, click Configuration .
- In the configuration menu on the left, click Plugin Library .
- Click the VCSP Pulse plugin tile.
- In the menu on the left, click License Keys .
Veeam Service Provider Console will display a list of all license keys managed in VCSP Pulse .
- Select the necessary license keys.
To narrow down the list of license keys, you can apply the following filters:
- Company Name — search the list of license keys by name of a company to which the license is assigned.
- Site Name — search the list of license keys by name of a site on which the company is registered.
- Product — search the list of license keys by the name of the product for which the license is assigned ( Veeam Backup Agents, Veeam Backup & Replication Enterprise, Veeam Backup & Replication Enterprise Plus, Veeam Backup & Replication Standard, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, Veeam Cloud Connect & Public Cloud Workloads, Veeam ONE ).
- Assignment Status — limit the list of license keys by assignment status ( Assigned , Not Assigned ).
- Usage Type — limit the list of license keys by usage type ( Single-customer use , Internal , Multi-customer use ).
- Automatic Reporting — limit the list of license keys by by automatic reporting status ( Enabled, Disabled ).
- Company Type — limit the list of license keys by type of a company to which the license is assigned ( Unassigned , End customer , Reseller , My company ).
- At the top of the list, click License Actions and select Assign .
Alternatively, you can right-click the necessary license key, choose License Actions and select Assign .
- In the Assign License window, select company type and the company to which you want to assign the license.
- Click Assign .
There is a misspelling right here:
I want to let the Veeam Documentation Team know about that.

Socket Licenses • Mandatory socket license usage for VM protection: In presence of a Socket license, protecting vSphere or Hyper-V VMs with agents or enterprise application plug-ins requires and consumes a socket license. This is the existing Veeam licensing policy that is now enforced at the product level. To avoid backup interruption after v10 upgrade, please ensure your socket license is sufficient to cover all hypervisor hosts where protected VMs reside, no matter of which Veeam product is used for protecting those VMs.

How to Assign a License to VMware ESXi Host
When you prepare to run VMware ESXi in vSphere environment, you need to get a license key first. This article will introduce how to assign a license to ESXi host.
By Crystal / Updated on March 8, 2023
- Way 1. Add license to ESXi host via Web Client
Way 2. Assign a license to ESXi host via vSphere Client
Overview of vmware esxi license.
VMware licenses are 25-character strings that includes letters and digits, divided into 5-character blocks with the “-” symbol. The license keys contain encrypted information about the purchased product edition and are not tied to hardware. You can assign the same VMware ESXi license key to multiple ESXi hosts until the total number of processors exceeds the CPU (central processing unit) capacity allowed by the license.
ESXi hosts are licensed with VMware vSphere licenses on a per-processor basis. VMware ESXi free is more suitable for personal environment or family lab since it has multiple limitations on vStorage API, CPU, memory size, etc. For enterprise running multiple VMs, it’d better to add a paid license to ESXi host, which enables third-party backup tools to interact with the hypervisor directly and increase the high-availability of virtual machines. For ESXi Evaluation version, it’s better to add a license until the evaluation period expires.
This article introduces how to add license to ESXi host step by step.
Note : A multicore CPU is counted as one CPU if the number of physical CPU cores is not higher than 32. If a CPU has more than 32 cores, then an additional CPU license must be applied. The amount of RAM and the number of running VMs are not limited by VMware licenses.
How to add license to ESXi host (2 Ways)
There are 2 ways to add a license to ESXi host. You can choose follow of them to get started.
Way 1. Add license to ESXi host via Web Client
1. Open VMware ESXi web and enter the IP address of the ESXi host that you want to license.
2. Select Manage , then click on Licensing >> Assign license .
3. In the opened wizard, enter the license key and click Check license to verify whether the license key is valid. If you see the green icon, please select Assign license to add this license to the ESXi host.
4. Back to the Licensing tab, you can notice the information of the ESXi host which shows the license has been successfully added to VMware ESXi host.
1. Login to VMware vSphere Client.
2. Access to Hosts and Clusters , select your Datacenter, then click on an ESXi host with license.
3. Select Configuration >> Licensing >> Assign License .
4. In the Assign License window, you can assign an existing license that has unused CPUs to ESXi host if you added multiple license keys to vCenter. And you can also assign a new license key to VMware ESXi host. For example, select New License .
5. Enter the license key, then type a name for the license. Click OK .
6. In the Assign License dialog box, select the newly created license, and click OK .
No matter which ESXi license you use, you should back up your virtual machines regularly for data protection.
Free and agentless backup solution for licensed VMware ESXi host
For VMware ESXi backup, it’s available for you to clone VM , copy files of virtual machine and export VM to OVF. However, these methods usually require you to do them manually and one-by-one, making it difficult to take advantage of the benefits of licensed VMware ESXi - centralized backup and management.
To protect virtual machines in batch and simplify the data management, it's best to use a professional backup software. Here I will use the free VMware backup software - AOMEI Cyber Backup as an example. It supports VMware ESXi 6.0-7.0 except ESXi hosts using the free ESXi license due to disabled VMware APIs. It is an agentless backup tool that offers automatic and flexible backups for VMware ESXi virtual machines. With this professional backup tool, you can schedule comprehensive backup tasks for free.
Perpetual Free : No time limit for AOMEI Cyber Backup Free Edition. Support Free ESXi : AOMEI Cyber Backup supports both paid and free versions of VMware ESXi. Agentless Backup : Backup virtual machines at host level without installing agent on each VM, reducing O&M costs. Automate VMware Backup : Run VM backup tasks automatically to offer continuous VM protection and reduce human errors. Instant Disaster Recovery : Once the VMware crashes, quickly restore VMware to normal state and easily migrate VM to another host. Role-Assignment : allow one administrator to create sub-accounts with limited privilege, effectively reduce administration cost and manual errors.
Please hit the button below to download and use AOMEI Cyber Backup for free:
*You can choose to install this VM backup software on either Windows or Linux system.
Safeguard VMware ESXi backup for free:
1. Click Backup Task >> Create New Task to schedule VMware ESXi backups.
2. In the opened wizard, enter the Task Name and select VMware ESXi Backup .
✦ In Device Name section, select one or more virtual machines to back up simultaneously.
✦ In Target section, specify a location to store VM backups such as network or local place. If you connect to NAS, you can easily backup VM to NAS .
✦ In Schedule section, enable schedule task and choose full/incremental/differential backup, then specify backup time and frequency as daily/weekly/monthly.
✦ Click Start Backup . From the drop-down menu, you can decide to perform backup later or now.
3. Restore : You can restore the whole VM and virtual environment within a few clicks. It doesn’t require any complicated reinstallation and configuration.
✍ While the Free Edition covers most of the VM backup needs, you can also upgrade to Premium Edition to enjoy: ✦ Batch VM Backup : Batch backup large numbers of VMs managed by vCenter Server or standalone ESXi hosts. ✦ Backup Cleanup : Configure retention policy to auto delete the old backup files and save storage space. ✦ Restore to new location : Easily make a clone of a virtual machine in the same or another datastore/host, without reinstalling or configuring a new VM.
This article describes how to add license to ESXi host. You can assign a license in VMware Host Client for a standalone ESXi host and in VMware vSphere Client for ESXi hosts that are managed by vCenter Server .
No matter which ESXi license you use, you should back up your virtual machines regularly, which protects your data and business security.

Broadcom terminates VMware's free ESXi hypervisor
Certain licenses still allow tinkerers to taste the vstack. whether they want to is another matter.
Broadcom has discontinued the free version of VMware's ESXi hypervisor.
News of the change came in a Monday knowledge base article that revealed the tool was removed from VMware.com and offered the following explanation for the change:
Along with the termination of perpetual licensing, Broadcom has also decided to discontinue the Free ESXi Hypervisor, marking it as EOGA (End of General Availability).
The free cut of ESXi was only able to run on limited number of cores, addressed a modest quantity of memory, and lacked many management niceties. So while it was able to be used in production it was more suited to testing, tinkering, and hobbyists. But when used in those roles it often led to production deployments, or improved the skills of IT pros who later became champions of the vStack.
Ending availability of the free version won't mean it's no longer possible to use the hypervisor without paying full freight: the VMWare User Group "advantage" licensing persists, as do trialware versions of the product.
Gartner research vice president Michael Warrilow told The Register the change may therefore not be significant.
"Given all the disruption facing VMware customers right now, many will misinterpret this move. Unless VMware no longer offers a trial edition, there's not a lot of impact," he told us. Warrilow added: "Microsoft no longer offers a free edition of Hyper-V Server, so if you want a free alternative there's several good open source options to explore."
Those alternatives include Nutanix's Community Edition, introduced in 2015 to tempt the curious.

Cloud Software Group effectively snuffs open source XenCenter via a README file
Dell kills sweetheart distribution deal with broadcom's vmware, amid broadcom's subscription push, vmware killed a saas product.
Justin Warren, the principal analyst of consultancy Pivot Nine, told The Register the demise of free vSphere means "Broadcom has pretty clearly signaled that it is no longer interested in smaller VMware customers.
"Unless you can justify a commitment to at least vSphere Foundation, Broadcom is happy to ignore you."
Warren rated the change "another gift to competitors like Nutanix, Scale Computing, Microsoft with Hyper-V/Azure Stack, or Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization (via KubeVirt). Their salespeople must be shopping for new boats. Or there are good, free options like Proxmox."
Warren added his opinion that this change is bad for VMware's longer-term prospects.
"This will impact the pipeline to new adoption for VMware, he predicted. "The free version was a way for people to become familiar with VMware, especially early in their career. A lot of now-CIOs, CTOs, etc. got their start that way. New people are likely to adopt something else now, and Broadcom must know that. A drop-off in new adoption may have already happened, so this could be a reaction by Broadcom rather than an instigation. The outcome is the same, though."
The demise of free vSphere comes after Broadcom recently made the operation of 3,500 cores running VMware Cloud Foundation the minimum requirement for inclusion in its cloud partner program.
Pre-acquisition VMware proudly touted the 4,000-plus small clouds that ran its stack, and applauded their ability to offer services that hyperscalers could not – especially providing sovereign clouds that lacked the complex legal entanglements that see multinational hyperscalers sometimes beholden to laws of their home jurisdictions. It is unclear how many of VMware's old cloud partners run enough cores to continue as Broadcom partners.
Meanwhile, the implications of Broadcom's decision to end perpetual licenses for VMware products continue to be analyzed by users. The change means software changes from per-VM licensing to a per-core subscription.
One VMware consultant of The Register 's acquaintance told us the change means some workloads now appear to be cheaper to run on bare metal than under vSphere.
Broadcom has pledged to increase VMware's profits substantially and quickly. ®

License Calculator for VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware vSphere Foundation and VMware vSAN. (96426)
VMware by Broadcom has created a license calculator to familiarize users with the new simplified subscription portfolio with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) and VMware vSAN. This calculator can be used to simulate different licensing scenarios. Before using the calculator, refer to KB Article 95727 to learn about the licensing details for VCF, VVF and vSAN.
The License Calculator for VCF, VVF and vSAN allows users to enter in sample configuration data to run different simulations to determine the subscription licenses required for VCF, VVF and vSAN.
How to use the License calculator Prerequisites:
- Download the attachment and extract the CSV template file and script.
The script accepts a CSV file, which a CSV template file has been included to enter data for different configurations for simulations. When using the template CSV file, please note the following rules:
1. Do not rename the column ID as that is referenced by the script. 2. Each row represents either a vSphere and/or vSAN cluster.
Enter in data for each of the column ID in order under each row. See column ID descriptions and data examples in the table below.
Instructions for using the VCF/VVF Calculator # Dot source the function . ./vcf-vvf-calculator.ps1 # Example calculator for VCF Get-VCFandVVFCalculator -InputFile sample-input.csv -DeploymentType VCF # Example calculator for VVF Get-VCFandVVFCalculator -InputFile sample-input.csv -DeploymentType VCF # Example calculator for VCF and export results to CSV Get-VCFandVVFCalculator -InputFile sample-input.csv -DeploymentType VCF - Csv # Example calculator for VVF and export results to CSV Get-VCFandVVFCalculator -InputFile sample-input.csv -DeploymentType VVF - Csv
Output Example Here is an example output after running the License Calculator for VVF and vSAN and the table below describes each of the columns in the VVF Compute and vSAN sections. Broadcom-owned vmware kills the free version of esxi virtualization software, software's free version was a good fit for tinkerers and hobbyists..
Andrew Cunningham - Feb 13, 2024 10:27 pm UTC
Since Broadcom's $61 billion acquisition of VMware closed in November 2023, Broadcom has been charging ahead with major changes to the company's personnel and products. In December, Broadcom began laying off thousands of employees and stopped selling perpetually licensed versions of VMware products , pushing its customers toward more stable and lucrative software subscriptions instead. In January, it ended its partner programs , potentially disrupting sales and service for many users of its products.
This week, Broadcom is making a change that is smaller in scale but possibly more relevant for home users of its products: The free version of VMware's vSphere Hypervisor, also known as ESXi, is being discontinued .
Further Reading
ESXi is what is known as a "bare-metal hypervisor," lightweight software that runs directly on hardware without requiring a separate operating system layer in between. ESXi allows you to split a PC's physical resources (CPUs and CPU cores, RAM, storage, networking components, and so on) among multiple virtual machines. ESXi also supports passthrough for PCI, SATA, and USB accessories, allowing guest operating systems direct access to components like graphics cards and hard drives.
The free version of ESXi had limits compared to the full, paid enterprise versions—it could only support up to two physical CPUs, didn't come with any software support, and lacked automated load-balancing and management features. But it was still useful for enthusiasts and home users who wanted to run multipurpose home servers or to split a system's time between Windows and one or more Linux distributions without the headaches of dual booting. It was also a useful tool for people who used the enterprise versions of the vSphere Hypervisor but wanted to test the software or learn its ins and outs without dealing with paid licensing.
For the latter group, a 60-day trial of the VMware vSphere 8 software is still available . Tinkerers will be better off trying to migrate to an alternative product instead, like Proxmox , XCP-ng , or even the Hyper-V capabilities built into the Pro versions of Windows 10 and 11.
