How to install Chrome extensions manually

Google leads you to believe that you can install Chrome extensions only from the Chrome Web Store. If you are willing to assume the risk, however, there's still a way to install third-party extensions you find in the wild.

matt-headshot-3

Google has, over the years, increased its restrictions for installing third-party Chrome extensions to help protect Chrome users from malicious code. A few years ago, you could simply install an extension from a developer's site without any hassle. Last year, you needed only to enable Developer mode before installing a CRX (Chrome extension) file. Now, according to Google, "to protect you while you browse, Chrome only lets you use extensions that have been published on the Chrome Web Store ."

If you are willing to assume the risk, there is a side door that Google left ajar for developers to test out their extensions, which you can use to install extensions that aren't listed in the Chrome Web Store. And here's the part where I say again that installing unverified extensions from unknown sources is risky and could expose your computer to malicious code. Proceed at your own risk.

Still with me? OK, here are the steps needed to install an extension from somewhere other than the Chrome Web Store.

1. Download the CRX file to your computer for the Chrome extension you want to install.

2. Go to chrome://extensions/ and check the box for Developer mode in the top right.

3. Use a CRX Extractor app -- I used CRX Extractor -- to unpack the CRX file and turn it into a ZIP file.

4. Locate the ZIP file on your computer and unzip it.

5. Go back to the chrome://extensions/ page and click the Load unpacked extension button and select the unzipped folder for your extension to install it.

How To Manually Download And Install Chrome Extensions

how to add extension in google chrome manually

Installing Chrome extensions is easy, just click the “Add to Chrome” button on the extension page and Chrome will both download and install the extension. However, what if you want to manually install the Chrome extensions? Maybe you want to download the extension, but install it on a different PC. Or you are having trouble installing Chrome extensions directly.

Whatever your reasoning is, you can manually download Chrome extensions and install them whenever you like. In this post, I’ll show you how to download a Chrome extension CRX file and then install it in Chrome manually.

Download Chrome extension CRX file

CRX file is basically the name of Chrome extension package (zipped file) that chrome unzips and installs as Chrome extension when you click the “Add to Chrome” button. You can download the CRX file of any extension separately with the help of another Chrome extension, here’s how.

You can install a CRX downloader Chrome extension that will help you download the CRX file of any Chrome extension. There are many extensions for this purpose, but I like CRX Extractor/Downloader for its intuitive usage so I’ll recommend that.

Just install this Chrome extension and move to the Chrome web store page of the extension of which you need the CRX file. Now click on the extension button and then click on “Download as CRX” . Depending on extension size it may take a few seconds for the download to begin.

download Chrome extension CRX file

That’s it, the extension CRX file will be downloaded to your PC and you can even move it to a different PC to install.

Manually install Chrome extension

Now that you have downloaded the CRX file, let’s see how you can install it in Chrome.

Click on the Chrome main menu and select “Extensions” from the “More tools” option.

Access Chrome extensions page

Here click on the “Developer mode” toggle at the top-right corner to enable it. You cannot install Chrome extensions manually without enabling this option.

Enable Developer Mode in Chrome extensions

Now drag and drop the CRX file of the extension in the Chrome extensions page and you’ll be asked to add the extension like you are usually asked. To drag and drop, you can either decrease the size of the Chrome window or drag the CRX file on the Chrome taskbar button to maximize Chrome and drop it.

Manually install Chrome extensions

This will install the extension and you don’t even need an internet connection to complete the installation.

Ending thoughts

Before I end, I should mention that you can use the same process to install Chrome extension in other Chromium-based browsers as well, such as Opera. Also, make sure you drag and drop the CRX file in Chrome and don’t just open it using Chrome as the default app. Otherwise, Chrome will not allow the installation.

How to Manually Install Extensions in Google Chrome

Mahesh Makvana

Google Chrome has been blessed with a number of extensions that help expand the capabilities of one of the most used web browsers in the world. If you have taken a look at the Chrome Store, you know that there is an extension for almost anything you want to do with your browser. From download managers to DLNA controllers, Chrome has everything for you. Despite this, some useful extensions have not been able to make it to the store, and hence cannot be used by users like you and me. But wait, there is now a way for you to install extensions available outside the store in Chrome. Here’s how:

Note : Some extensions are not available in the Chrome store for security reasons. Before you bypass the Chrome store and install an extension manually, make sure that the extension you are installing is free of virus/malware.

In the example below, I will be installing an extension called “Google Stars” that is NOT available in the Chrome store. The procedure is the same for any extension you wish to install. All you need to have is the .crx file of the extension.

3. Once on the Settings page, click on the “Extensions” link given in the left-hand side of your screen. It will take you to the extensions page that shows all the extensions you have installed in your browser.

4. On the extensions page, you should see a checkbox on the top saying “Developer mode.” Click on it.

5. Drag the .crx file and drop it onto the extensions page.

6. Once you have dropped the file, it will ask if you want to add the extension to your browser. Click on “Add” to manually install the extension.

7. When Chrome has finished installing the extension, you will see something like the following. It indicates the extension was successfully installed.

exchrome-success

That’s it.

You have successfully sideloaded an extension in your Chrome that was unavailable in the official Chrome store. This way, you can add as many extensions in your Chrome as you want; just make sure you know what you are going to install so as to avoid any issues down the road.

Having the ability to manually install an extension lets you try out some of the extensions that are either in testing mode or have not been able to make their way to the official store, obviously for some reasons known only by the developer.

How To Install Chrome Extensions Manually

Google recently decided to disable the installation of Chrome extensions from third-party websites, but some users still want to install these extensions. Here's how to do it.

Google recently decided to disable the installation of Chrome extensions from third-party websites. This was an expected and arguably necessary change, as such extensions could prove a serious security risk that's entirely outside of Google's hands, but some users still want to install extensions from sources other than the Chrome Web Store. Here's how to do it.

An Introductory Note

Before we get into these instructions, I want to remind you why Google disabled this feature in the first place. Browser extensions, like other programs and extensions, can be a security threat if they behave badly. At the least they can be annoying, serving up extra advertisements that wouldn't normally appear. At the worst, well -- imagine whatever your personal worst-case scenario might be.

What You Need To Do First

Google's policy is aggressive enough that simply trying to install a .crx file manually to a regular version of Chrome doesn't work. The browser will notice it's not in the Chrome Web Store and disable it automatically.

This doesn't happen, however, if you download the developer version of Google Chrome . You need to grab Chrome from the "dev channel" on the page just linked. Installation is just as normal, but once installed open the menu and go to "About Google Chrome ." The up to date message should now show a version number that ends with " dev-m ."

thirdpartychrome5

Now once again open the menu, and go to Tools-> Extensions  and in the extensions page check " developer mode ." And that's it – you're now ready to install the extensions.

Installing The Extension

Once you've set up the installation, actually adding the extension is easy. All you need to do is drag-and-drop the .crx file from a folder into the Extensions page. You will receive a permissions pop-up which looks like the one below.

thirdpartychromeextension2

Pay attention to that, since it tells you what the third-party extension can access. There could be some information in there that you don't want a third party to have, like browsing history (shown above). You'll need to perform some self-interested risk analysis to decide if the usefulness of the extension outweighs the security risk presented by its permissions.

And that's it. The extension should start working immediately; in some cases you may need to go to the Extensions  page and click on the " Options " area of the extension to perform final setup.

thirdpartychrome4

With this said, my experience installing third-party extensions hasn't been the most fruitful. Many third-party Chrome extensions do not install correctly or don't do what they should once they're installed. Of the extensions I hunted down to test, I experienced a 40% rate of success. In other words, be prepared for some frustration; many third-party extensions have been abandoned by their developers or never worked properly in the first place.

Where To Find Extensions

As you can see, actually installing a third party extension is still simple. The hard part is finding extensions. Here are four sources where I found a variety of .crx extensions.

Chrome Extensions : A somewhat unreliable site that has some working extensions on it. The selection is broad, and many of the extensions useful, but the site doesn't do much to let you know which are up-to-date and still working.

Github : Searching Github for Chrome Extensions turns up a large number of results. Most of the extensions here are "unpacked" meaning they're not in .crx format. You'll have to use the " Load unpacked extension " option to add them.

thirdpartychromeextension3

Reddit : Reddit's /r/chrome_extensions forum is not particularly popular, but it does include some extensions on it that may be of interest. As with Github, some of the extensions found here will be unpacked.

CNET Downloads : The majority of the extensions here are official, so CNET simply re-directs you to the Chrome Web Store . A few third-party options do exist; you'll know them because they'll have a download link instead of a "visit site" button.

You can also try visiting any Chrome extension developer forum, where folks share their works in progress. Of course, these are even more likely than normal to be unstable, so use them at your own risk.

Tell Us About Great Third-Party Extensions

To be frank, Google's move to make the Chrome Web Store the only source for extensions has been an effective way of killing off third-party extensions. My sense of the third-party scene is that it's scattered and unreliable, at best; many developers have simply taken the path of least resistance and signed up with the official store.

Still, if you want to install a third-party extension, this is how you do it. Good luck, and if you find any alternative methods, or any sites that have a great selection of third-party apps, be sure to leave a comment! What has your experience been of third-party extensions? Any horror stories? Do tell.

Introduction

Chrome extensions are a fantastic way to enhance your browsing experience, adding new functionalities and customization options to your Chrome browser. While most extensions can be easily installed from the Chrome Web Store with just a few clicks, you may come across some extensions that are not available in the store or have been removed.

In such cases, the good news is that you can still install Chrome extensions manually. Manually installing an extension involves downloading the extension files and loading them into your Chrome browser. This gives you the freedom to use extensions that are not listed in the store or have been discontinued, ensuring that you can still enjoy their features.

If you’re unfamiliar with the process of manually installing Chrome extensions , fear not! In this article, we will guide you through the step-by-step process to install Chrome extensions manually. Whether it’s an extension that you’ve downloaded from a third-party website or an extension that you’ve developed yourself, this guide will help you get it up and running in no time.

So, if you’re ready to take control of your Chrome browsing experience and explore the world of unique and custom extensions, let’s dive right in and learn how to install Chrome extensions manually.

Step 1: Download the Chrome Extension

The first step in manually installing a Chrome extension is to download the extension files onto your computer. This can be done by visiting the website or source where the extension is available for download. Typically, you’ll find a download link or button that you can click to initiate the download.

Make sure to download the extension from a reliable and trusted source. It’s important to be cautious and avoid downloading extensions from unknown or suspicious websites, as they may contain malware or other security risks.

Once the download is complete, you’ll generally have a zipped file or a folder containing the extension files. Most extensions are packaged in a compressed format to facilitate easy distribution and installation.

After downloading the extension files, it’s a good idea to create a dedicated folder on your computer to keep them organized. This will make it easier to locate the files when you’re ready to install the extension in Chrome.

Remember to keep the downloaded extension files in a safe location, as you will need them in the next steps of the installation process. Now that you have successfully downloaded the Chrome extension, let’s move on to the next step, where we will extract the extension files.

Step 2: Extract the Extension Files

Once you have downloaded the Chrome extension and have the files ready on your computer, the next step is to extract the extension files from the compressed folder. This is necessary to access and load the extension into your Chrome browser.

To extract the extension files, locate the downloaded zipped folder on your computer. Right-click on the folder and select the “Extract” or “Extract Here” option from the context menu. This will unpack the compressed files and create a new folder with the extension files.

After extracting the files, you will see a folder containing various files and folders associated with the extension. These files include the extension’s manifest file, JavaScript files, HTML files, CSS files, and any other resources necessary for the extension to function properly.

It is important to keep the extracted files intact and not modify or delete any of them unless you have a good understanding of the extension’s structure and functionality. Altering the files could result in the extension not working correctly or causing compatibility issues with your browser.

Now that you have successfully extracted the extension files, you are one step closer to installing the extension manually in your Chrome browser. In the next step, we will enable the Developer Mode in Chrome to allow for the installation of the extension.

Step 3: Enable Developer Mode in Chrome

Before you can install a Chrome extension manually, you need to enable Developer Mode in the Chrome browser. Developer Mode allows you to load and test extensions that are not available in the Chrome Web Store.

To enable Developer Mode, launch your Chrome browser and access the Extensions settings. You can do this by clicking on the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner of the browser window, then selecting “More Tools” and “Extensions” from the drop-down menu.

In the Extensions settings, you will find a toggle switch labeled “Developer mode” near the top-right corner of the page. Click on the toggle switch to enable Developer Mode.

Enabling Developer Mode will reveal new options and controls for managing extensions. It’s important to note that enabling Developer Mode does not pose any security risks to your browser as long as you only load and install extensions from trusted sources.

With Developer Mode now enabled, you are ready to proceed to the next step, where we will load the extension into Chrome.

Step 4: Load the Extension in Chrome

Now that you have enabled Developer Mode in Chrome, you can proceed to load and install the manually downloaded extension. This step involves adding the extension files to your Chrome browser.

To load the extension, go back to the Extensions settings page in Chrome. You can access this page by clicking on the three-dot menu icon, selecting “More Tools,” and then “Extensions.”

In the Extensions settings, you will now see a new button labeled “Load unpacked” near the top-left corner of the page. Click on this button to open a file browser dialog.

Navigate to the folder where you extracted the extension files in Step 2. Select the folder and click “Open” to load the extension into Chrome.

Once the extension is loaded, you will see a new entry in the Extensions list, representing the manually installed extension. The entry will display the extension’s name, version, and other details.

It’s important to note that you should only load and install extensions from trusted sources to avoid any security risks. Ensure that you have thoroughly vetted the extension and are confident in its authenticity and safety.

Now that you have successfully loaded the extension in Chrome, you are almost done! In the next step, we will test the extension to ensure it is functioning correctly.

Step 5: Test the Extension

After loading the extension in Chrome, it’s crucial to test its functionality to ensure that it is working as expected. Testing the extension will help you verify that all features and functionalities are functioning correctly in your browser.

To test the extension, navigate to a webpage or perform the specific action that the extension is designed to enhance or modify. For example, if you installed a productivity extension, test its features by opening a new tab or trying out its toolbar options.

Pay attention to any changes or additions that the extension introduces to the browser interface or the webpage you’re visiting. Make sure the extension is working as intended and that there are no error messages or unexpected behavior.

If the extension has settings or preferences that can be customized, take some time to explore and modify them according to your preference. This will help you personalize the extension to suit your needs and maximize its effectiveness.

It’s important to thoroughly test the extension’s functionality across different scenarios to ensure its stability. Try using the extension on various websites and in different situations, to guarantee a seamless experience across the board.

If you encounter any problems or note any discrepancies during the testing phase, consider reaching out to the extension developer for support or consulting the documentation provided by the developer. They may be able to assist you in troubleshooting the issue or providing further instructions.

Once you are satisfied with the extension’s performance and have confirmed that it is working correctly, congratulations! You have successfully installed and tested a Chrome extension manually.

Now you can enjoy the added features and enhanced browsing experience offered by the extension. Remember to keep your extensions updated and regularly check for new releases or updates to ensure you’re getting the latest features and security patches.

Manually installing Chrome extensions can be a valuable skill, giving you the flexibility to use extensions not available in the Chrome Web Store or those that have been discontinued. By following the step-by-step guide outlined in this article, you can easily download, extract, load, and test Chrome extensions on your own.

Remember to exercise caution when downloading extension files from third-party websites and only install extensions from trusted sources to avoid any security risks. Enabling Developer Mode in Chrome allows you to load and test these extensions without compromising the safety of your browser.

Testing the functionality of the extension after installation is crucial to ensure that it works as intended and meets your expectations. Take the time to explore its features, customize settings, and test it across various websites and situations to ensure a smooth and seamless experience.

Step 1: Use the Microsoft Edge browser to download the desired extension from the Edge Web Store.

Step 2: Locate the URL of the extension, which will include its unique ID (for example, “mbpnbnogejaolbhfpfgagldkeahefbhd”). Find the corresponding folder in the following location on your computer:

C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Extensions

Step 3: Open Google Chrome, navigate to the extensions page at chrome://extensions, and enable Developer Mode.

Step 4: Click on Load Unpacked and select the folder with the extension ID from Step 2.

As you may know, all the Downloader extensions from Chrome Web Store are not able to download YouTube videos. I use this method to install YouTube Downloader Chrome extensions from the Edge Web Store. However, I cannot guarantee all extensions will work well in Chrome. Give it a try and see what works for you.

Load Firefox Extensions to Chrome

Foxified is a Chrome extension that enables users to install Firefox extensions directly into their Chrome browser. This allows users to access a wider range of extensions and customization options, beyond what is available in the Chrome Web Store.

Step 1: Install Foxified

To install Foxified , go to the Chrome Web Store and click the “Add to Chrome” button. The extension will automatically be added to your browser and you will see a Foxified icon in your browser’s toolbar.

Step 2: Find the Firefox Extension you want to install

Go to the Firefox Add-ons website and find the extension you want to install. Click the “Install using Foxified” button to install the extension in Firefox.

Load Firefox Extensions to Chrome

(Optional)Step 3: Download the XPI file

When Step 2 failed to load the extension to Chrome, you can manually install it. Once the extension is installed in Firefox, go to the Firefox menu, select “Add-ons,” and find the extension you just installed. Click on the “More” button and select “Export Add-on.” The extension will then be downloaded as a XPI file.

(Optional)Step 4: Import the XPI file into Foxified

Open the Foxified extension in Chrome and click the “Upload File” button. Select the XPI file you just downloaded and Foxified will automatically install the extension into Chrome.

Step 5: Use the Extension

You can now use the Firefox extension in Chrome as you would any other Chrome extension. The extension will be listed in your Chrome extensions list and you can it by clicking on the Foxified icon in the browser’s toolbar.

Foxified is a useful tool for those who want access to a wider range of extensions than what is available in the Chrome Web Store. It is a simple and straightforward process to install Firefox extensions into Chrome using Foxified, making it an excellent option for those who want to customize their browser experience.

Installing Chrome extensions manually is not recommended for the average user, but it can be done if necessary. By following these simple steps, you can install Chrome extensions manually and enjoy the additional features they provide.

However, it is important to note that manually installing extensions from untrusted sources can be dangerous, as they may contain malware or spyware that can compromise your security and privacy. So, I recommend you manually install Chrome extensions from Edge Web Store or Firefox Add-ons if you cannot find one in Chrome Web Store.

How to Manually Install Extensions (Ungoogled Chromium)

This post was originally published on 20 NOV 2020 ; it has since been updated and revised.

For those who don't wish to download Chromium extensions from the Chrome Web Store, there is (fortunately) an alternative: you can install Chromium extensions manually . No Google account required.

While this guide is primarily for people using Ungoogled Chromium, it can apply to other Chromium based browsers such as Brave. We'll be exploring two methods for installing Chromium extensions manually in this post.

(Also, if you are by chance using regular Chromium or Google Chrome, here's why you shouldn't . Consider switching to a browser that protects and respects your privacy as a user.)

Why install extensions manually?

Why would you ever choose to install an extension by hand?

Exact individual reasons vary, but in general you can boil it down to a couple of points:

This is probably the biggest reason for most users choosing to install extensions manually.

Installing extensions by hand or simply bypassing the Chrome Web Store, can improve your privacy.

Naturally, when you install apps and extensions from any kind of web store directly, you're trading some of your information. This information can be relatively harmless, but we know how hard Big Tech mines any bit of information available.

For example, with the Chrome Web Store, you can only download extensions if you have and are signed into a Google account.

This means that if you download a privacy related extension straight from the web store, 1) this gets directly linked your google account, which is subject to Google's privacy policy and 2) feeds some information straight to Google.

What I mean by that 2nd point in the above sentence, is that you might start seeing more extensions related to "privacy" once you download a privacy related extension. You may start getting search "suggestions" that relate to privacy extensions. You may also start seeing advertisements (can we recommend an adblocking solution while we're at it?) across the web for "privacy" and "secure" software. This is Google's hyper personalized recommendation system at work.

Also, not to mention that some of the "privacy" related extensions and other related software may turn out to not to be as private or secure as advertised. Let's not forget that a number of extensions on the Chrome Web Store have been found to steal user data .

Depending on who you are and what you require need for your own privacy wants and needs, none of this may be a big deal to you; perhaps your Google account is a "throwaway" account that you use when interacting with any other Google service in the first place.

So, in general, this may very well not be an issue to everyone , but it is still a viable issue for some. Hence the want to install Chromium extensions manually.

Greater control

Installing extensions by hand does give you greater control over the exact versions of extensions you're running.

For example, you can more easily rollback an update that keeps crashing your browser when you install extensions manually.

However, this is a double-edged sword; you also have to stay on top of these updates in the first place. This often means reading patch notes; you wouldn't want to miss a critical security update.

This method is the best approach, especially if you're using something like Ungoogled Chromium .

1. Download "Chromium Web Store"

I know it sounds crazy, but we are going to download an extension that allows us to download extensions from the official Chrome Web Store without creating or signing into a Google account.

It's kind of like… extension-ception.

This extension, called "Chromium Web Store," is not found on the Chrome Web Store. We are going to install it directly from its GitHub repo .

  • Open any browser of your choice (doesn't have to be Chromium based)
  • Click here to go straight to Chromium Web Store's latest releases page .
  • Download the file Chromium.Web.Store.crx

downloading chromium web store crx

Double check that you are downloading the correct file. It ends in .crx ; you don't need to download any of the source code.

  • Save Chromium.Web.Store.crx to a safe place. Your desktop, Documents, or Downloads folders are all good places.

2. Install Chromium Web Store

  • Open your Chromium browser. Again, I'm using Ungoogled Chromium here, but any Chromium-based browser should do the trick.
  • In the address bar, type chrome://flags/#extension-mime-request-handling
  • Change Handling of extension MIME type requests to Always prompt for ins . (This makes it more user friendly to install .crx files, which are the packed version of chromium extensions)
  • Now, in the address bar, type chrome://extensions like so:

chromium extensions path way

  • In the top right, enable Developer mode (hint: it's enabled when you can see buttons for "Load unpacked" and "Pack extension.")

turning on developer mode chromium

  • Open an explorer window on your PC. Navigate to the folder where you saved Chromium.Web.Store.crx
  • Drag Chromium.Web.Store.crx to your Chromium browser, like so:

installing crx to chromium

  • You should get a dialog box warning like this:

installing crx to chromium dialog box

Go ahead and click Add extension

  • The extension should install. You should now see something like this:

chromium web store installed

3. Installing other extensions (with CWS)

Chromium Web Store is installed, so now it's time for us to download some extensions.

We'll be downloading these extensions straight from the Chrome Web Store... with no Google account.

I'll be installing the wide-spectrum tracker blocker, uBlock Origin in this step.

  • Go to the Chrome Web Store. Search for the extension you would like to download.
  • Go to the extension's page. In the top right you should see a button Add to Chromium , as if you were logged into a Google account. (hint: you shouldn't be logged into a Google account!)

extension on chrome web store

  • Seeing Add to Chromium without being logged into a Google account is a good thing. It means our Chromium Web Store extension is working !
  • Click Add to Chromium . You should get this dialog box:

adding extension from chrome web store

  • Click Add extension . The extension should install.

If you go back to chrome://extensions you should see your new extension, alongside the Chromium Web Store extension:

installed chromium extensions

This method is a true "manual" method. It doesn't require any extensions to be installed.

This method works by accessing and downloading the .crx file directly.

We do this by using a template URL that takes us right to the .crx file. The template URL is:

https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx?response=redirect&acceptformat=crx2,crx3&prodversion=[VERSION]&x=id%3D[EXTENSION_ID]%26installsource%3Dondemand%26uc

Note the VERSION and EXTENSION_ID in brackets in the URL...

  • VERSION = the Chromium browser version
  • EXTENSION_ID = is the unique ID of the extension. This comes from an extension's Chrome Web Store page URL.

Let's run through an example. This time, I will be installing the LocalCDN extension.

1. Get Chromium browser version

We need to get the version of Chromium we have installed on our system. This is pretty simple.

  • Open your Chromium browser
  • Access the browser's menu. It should be in the top right.
  • Click About Chromium
  • A new tab should open. This tab should have the version number right there for you, like so:

about chromium version settings

  • Copy this version number exactly as you see it, periods and all. Be sure not to copy and extra spaces before or after the number.
  • Paste this version number somewhere safe and easily accessed because we will be using it later. For example, I'm pasting mine into Notepad. No need to save.

2. Get the extension ID

Now, we need to get the extension ID from the Chrome Web Store.

  • Open any browser of choice. It doesn't have to be a Chromium based browser.
  • Go to the Chrome Web Store .
  • Search for the extension you want to download.
  • Go to the extension's Chrome Web Store page. Again, I'm on the page for LocalCDN :

localcdn chrome web store page

  • Simply look at your browser's address bar. The extension ID is the series of seemingly random letters at the end of the URL:

extension id of localcdn

As you can see, LocalCDN's extension ID is njdfdhgcmkocbgbhcioffdbicglldapd

  • Copy this extension ID. Be sure not to accidentally copy any extra spaces after the ID.
  • Paste this ID somewhere safe. We'll need it later.

3. Installing via the CRX URL

We have both the Chromium browser version number and the ID number of the extension we are installing.

Now it's time to actually pull the .crx file by using the template URL found earlier in this guide.

  • Paste the Chromium browser version number in place of VERSION . Keep the periods, delete any extra spaces you may have accidentally copied. Be sure to delete the brackets as well!
  • Paste the extension ID in place of EXTENSION_ID. Delete any accidental spaces and the brackets as well!
  • Your final URL should look something like this:

https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx?response=redirect&acceptformat=crx2,crx3&prodversion=86.0.4240.183&x=id%3Dnjdfdhgcmkocbgbhcioffdbicglldapd%26installsource%3Dondemand%26uc

  • Press Enter on your keyboard.
  • In a couple of seconds, you should get a dialog box, like so:

install localcdn crx

  • Click Add extension . Your extension should install.

Updating manually installed extensions

When you manually install an extension, you'll typically have to manually update it too.

This is especially true for users of Ungoogled Chromium; since there are zero callbacks made to Google servers, this means that automatic updates to extensions just don't happen.

Fortunately, updating your installed extensions is not hard; you'll repeat the steps of whatever method you chose to install your extensions. Hint: If you're going to be doing that, then perhaps you should consider bookmarking this page!

However, if you used the Chromium Web Store extension in order to download your extensions, it can check for updates for you. Like any work around, it isn't without some faults but its update function works reliably enough - as long as you keep the Chromium Web Store extension itself updated.

With the second more manual method, you'll have to stay on top of updates yourself. Depending on the type of user you are and your particular wants/needs (and threat model), manual updating of extensions can work in your favor. Generally , if you're a user who is more cautious about updates in general, then you may prefer Method 2 as it gives you even greater control over when you update your extensions.

Final thoughts

Installing extensions manually on Chromium browsers is certainly more work than just downloading them from the Chrome Web Store.

However, that's where you're trading convenience for privacy. To some people, it's not a big deal. To others, it is.

Fortunately, there are options for both parties and for most threat models out there.

Installing extensions by hand can help further preserve your privacy. It also gives you more control over what is installed/used in your Chromium browser.

Hopefully this guide taught you something valuable, whether you choose to use what you found here or not. Did this method work for you? Feel free to let us know in the comments - your feedback helps keeps this post updated and to ensure that the methods outlined here actually work!

How to Install Google Chrome Extensions Manually

Continuously more features are always added every time in famous internet browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc. Its primary goal is to add value to the user with great features and functionality of that extension that gives boosts in user experience.

How can we provide improvements over extensions? Allowing third-party developers to collaborate with Apple, Firefox and Google makes things happen with faster time.

You have to note that Apple has not encouraged developers to develop the extensions over the past few years but now they are changing their policy regarding extensions. Meanwhile both Mozilla and Google Chrome thrilled their network with new extensions over their browser for better ability to use.

Don’t mind anything because there are pure extensions available on the online store to che ck out and fulfill your needs with the latest powerful extensions that are developed by third-party programmers.

Learn How to Manually Install Chrome Extensions

Sometimes we face the major problem that the required extensions are not available in the extension store. So we need to find and use those extensions to install manually to the browser folder is the only way to use those extensions for our personal use. Don’t lose hope, we have that developer extension in hand and follow our guide to properly install that browser extension manually for 100% work.

We are doing this test with Google Chrome browser so concentrate on this browser first for better experience about third-party extensions. All of you know about Github Repository where we can download the extension in zip file and learn how to install manually on Chrome browser.

  • Go to Github Repository and then open the <> Code button which is under the name and title.
  • Now click the Code button which is on the page right side.
  • Click Download Zip file while dropping down the menu from there.
  • Launch Finder on your Mac device.
  • Navigate the downloaded file and Double-click to unzip the file.
  • While Unzipping the file just try to use a safe location from the drives for better security because sometimes we may accidentally delete the file and we can’t find it anywhere. So just make sure to locate the file safely.
  • Open Google Chrome browser on your Mac.
  • From the Menu, click Settings . (Maybe you can use shortcut by pressing CMD + simultaneously with a tab)
  • Now click three horizontal lines from the top right corner of the browser.
  • On the Sidebar bottom, click Extensions .
  • See and open the Load unpacked button from the top right corner of the screen.
  • Locate the browser to select the downloaded file which is extracted into the specific folder.
  • To enable the extension, try to click the toggle to enable the extension to the browser.

If the “Error” button shows with the Details and Remove buttons, then click that button to see which specific errors they showed. In this post, it clearly shows the inability to access the chrome://URL , but it works most of the time.

While installing the chrome extensions manually, there is no direct contact with the Chrome Web Store for further updates. The one and only difference is that you need to manually update your chrome extension by again following the above steps each.

Why Should You Manually Install Google Chrome Extensions

It’s a tedious process because of manual installation of the chrome extensions because new users won’t do these exact steps individually to test their extensions over chrome browser. We don’t request you to install these files via Windows or Mac devices because of its security lac. Maybe someone found that interesting tool over the internet and you have some dopamine level to check whether it’s working or not with full functionality.

That’s why we recommend you to install your preferred chrome extensions into your browser through Chrome Web Store. Why does it’s fully verified by users all over the world and its security is more concerned while in the web store. Google certifies these extensions in their web world with ratings and reviews from all genuine users from the internet while they are experiencing the browser for their specific needs.

Top 3 Chrome Extensions that are preferred by Techvorth

Chrome web store is a digital playground that you need to achieve the goal. If you miss it, then your world is too small to consider. Nowadays Google does their strict process whenever the security falls behind the hand and that’s why most of the extensions are deleted from their web store. Now try these extensions in your browser for better performance.

1. Momentum

Whenever we launch Google Chrome, a new tab will open with commonly visited website history and a big Google search bar is presented there. This is not really exciting whenever we open the new tab but we can make it with useful information on those new tabs by using the chrome extension called Momentum .

It acts as a personalized dashboard that brings weather details up-to-date with great inspirational messages. There are 4 million users currently installed this extension on their browser and everytime this extension brings a new quote to those users everyday with a positive approach.

2. Session Buddy

Why I preferred this Session Buddy as the second top most extension is that it helps to bring back all those sudden deletions of the chrome window tabs. While researching work, it is quite possible to crash the browser with overload of memory space or accidentally close the windows bar.

And thus, Session Buddy brings back all those deleted tabs with preferred time with great explorer of the browser usages. With minimal features of this extension, we may easily save any of your opened tabs as a collection with specific time as soon as possible.

3. Dark Reader

I love this extension because it takes full care of my eyes without any tough situations. At night, your computer screen may show too heavy when we browse or launch browsers while reading the article. With additional features of the Dark Reader , it makes dark themes with custom options easily available anytime.

One of the advantages is that this extension is free from unwanted ads that makes this extension even better. This extension is completely open-source and the source code is available in Github website which makes this extension user friendly for better updates from the user itself.

Most Chrome extensions start working automatically when you add them to your browser, but they can also be disabled after you install them. If you or another user has disabled an extension in your Chrome browser, it’s easy to re-enable it. You may also be able to enable third-party extensions that have been disabled by Chrome if you contact the developer. In this article, we’ll talk you through the easiest ways to get your extensions working again.

Re-enabling Extensions You’ve Disabled

Step 1 Open the Chrome browser.

  • You can also access the menu for individual pinned extensions by right-clicking the extension’s icon in the menu bar at the top of the browser window. If you’re on a Mac, use Ctrl + click.

Step 4 Tap Manage Extension.

  • You can also access the Extensions tab in your browser by going to the menu button ⋮ at the top right side of the browser window, then selecting More tools , then Extensions . [4] X Research source

Step 7 Toggle each extension back on to enable it.

  • Once the extension is enabled the button will turn blue, and the toggle will shift to the right.
  • If an extension has temporarily stopped working, you may see a blue Reload button instead. Click the button to restart your extension and get it working again.

Enabling Extensions Disabled by Chrome

Step 1 Open Chrome on your computer.

  • Unfortunately, you can’t manage your extensions using the mobile app version of Chrome.

Step 2 Open the Extensions tab to see disabled extensions.

  • If any of the extensions have been disabled by Chrome (rather than by you or another user), they will appear greyed out, and you won’t be able to use the toggle switch to re-enable them. [7] X Research source

Step 3 Contact the developer of the disabled extension.

What is a Google Chrome Extension?

Google Chrome extensions are programs that can be installed into Chrome in order to change the browser's functionality. This includes adding new features to Chrome or modifying the existing behavior of the program itself to make it more convenient for the user.

Examples of the type of functionality that a Google Chrome extension can add to Chrome includes:

  • Blocking ads from being displayed
  • Optimizing memory usage so that Chrome runs more efficiently
  • Adding to do lists or notes to Chrome
  • Password management
  • Making it easier to copy text from a site
  • Protect your privacy and making web browsing more secure.

As you can see, extensions offer a wide range of extra functionality so that you can perform tasks easier or get more out of the web sites you visit.

Unfortunately, while most Chrome extensions are beneficial, there are some developers that create extensions that modify the behavior of Chrome in a negative way. For example, adware developers may install Chrome extensions without your permission that inject advertisements on to web pages that you are viewing, change your search provider to a site under their control, change the new tab page, or hijack your home page.

You can see an example of a malicious extension called Search-NewTab that injects advertisements in the image below. It goes without saying that you should always remove malicious Google Chrome extensions when you encounter them.

Malicious Chrome Extension

How do you use a Google Chrome Extension?

How you use a Google Chrome extensions depends on the particular extension. Some extensions work in the background and perform particular tasks automatically. Other extensions will add menu options to the menu when you right-click on a web page as shown below.

Right Click Context Menus

Most extensions will also add small icons to the right of the address field in the browser. These icons can be clicked on or right-clicked to access the functionality of the extension. You can see an example of extension icons in the image below.

Where can I find Google Chrome Extensions to Install?

While some developers offer direct downloads of their extensions, the best place to install get a Chrome extension is from Google's Chrome Web Store . While this site is called a store and there are some extensions that you need to purchase before you can use them, the vast majority of extensions listed here are for free.

Chrome Web Store

To use the store, simply search for an extension by keyword or browse the categories listed in the store. It is important to be careful when installing extensions, though, as the more extensions you install the more memory Chrome will use on your computer. Therefore, only install an extension that you plan on using.

Furthermore, it is important to read the reviews of an extension before you install it. This is because there are many that do not work properly or are designed to just change your search engine, start page, or new tab page. These types of extensions should be avoided.

What are some of the Best Google Chrome Extensions?

There are so many good Chrome extensions that it would be impossible to list all of them. With that said, there are some extensions that I personally feel are a must have as they offer much needed functionality, better security, and optimize the performance of Chrome.

Below is a list of extensions that I recommend be installed in Chrome. If anyone has any other suggestions, please feel free to contact us. No SPAM, though, as that will be deleted.

Extensity is a extension manager that allows you to quickly enable and disable extensions as you need them. Normally you do not want to install too many extensions, especially ones that you do not use, as they increase the memory used by Chrome. With Extensity, you can quickly enable extensions when you need them and disable them when you do not.

LastPass: Free Password Manager

LastPass is a password manager that allows you to use unique passwords at every site you visit, without having to remember any of them. With the amount of sites being hacked, it is important for everyone to use difficult and unique passwords for every site they visit. This extension makes this process much easier to achieve.

HTTPS Everywhere

HTTPS Everywhere is an extension created by EFF and the Tor Project which automatically switches thousands of sites from insecure "http" to secure "https". It will protect you against many forms of surveillance and account hijacking, and some forms of censorship.

The Great Suspender

The Great Suspender is a lightweight chrome extension to help reduce chrome's memory footprint for users that like to have too many tabs open at the same time. This extension will automagically unload each tab while retaining its favicon and title text. A tab can be restored by clicking anywhere on the page when it is needed. This reduces the number of dom elements on the page and ensures no memory leaks or excessive javascripts are running. Authy

The Authy extension makes it easy to generate codes required for Two-Factor Authentication.

Chrome New Window Focus

The Chrome New Window Focus extension attempts to fix a bug present in Chrome since several years: when a new Chrome window is opened, sometimes it doesn't get focused and it remains behind other windows. This extension will try to force focus on any newly created window.

Adblock Plus

Adblock Plus is an ad blocker that also supports websites by not blocking unobtrusive ads by default.

CryptUp: Encrypt Gmail with PGP

CryptUp makes sending PGP encrypted email through Gmail incredibly easy. For anyone who is worried about people eavesdropping on their communications, but do not want to deal with the complexity of setting up PGP, this is a great extension to use.

Lazarus: Form Recovery

One of the most annoying things is when you fill out a long form and then close the browser window by accident or the program crashes before you can submit it. Lazarus is a Chrome extension that records what you type into forms so you can retrieve it again later.

How to manually update Chrome extensions

Make sure you are on the latest version of your browser extensions.

Engineering Manager

Developers regularly make updates to their browser extensions to introduce new features, improve reliability, and ensure that you have a smooth experience with their extensions.

Your browser should keep your extensions up-to-date automatically, but if you need to manually check the version number of your extension and update it, here is a step-by-step guide.

Check which version of an extension you have installed

By default, your browser will keep extensions up to date automatically. You generally do not need to manually update extensions. However, there are occasionally times where it may be helpful to determine which version of an extension you have installed.

To find the version number of your extension in Google Chrome, follow these steps:

  • Click on the three dot menu in the top right of your browser, then navigate down to "More tools", followed by clicking on "Extensions".

  • On the extensions page, click on the "Details" button on your extension.

Manually update your Chrome extension

Your browser should keep extensions up-to-date automatically, but there may be times where a browser did not automatically update your extension.

This can be due to a variety of factors that are outside of the developers’ control. The most common reason is that an update is still in progress of being rolled out to all users by Google.

If you would like to manually check for updates, here's how you can easily check for updates on your extensions:

  • At the top right of the page, enable the toggle for "Developer mode". You only need to turn this on temporarily, and it will not affect any of your other extensions or web pages.

  • A new set of buttons should have appeared at the left of your screen. Click the button that says "Update", underneath the "Extensions" header at the top left.

  • After you click on this button, wait about 30 seconds. You may see the version number of your extension increase, if there was an update. Once updates have completed, finish the process by turning off "Developer mode" at the top right of the page.

How to uninstall or disable extensions in google chrome.

Need to uninstall or disable an extension in Google Chrome? Here's how to do it.

Extensions can add a wide range of new features and functionality to Google Chrome, but sometimes you need to remove or disable one or more of them. Here's how to do it.

First, open Google Chrome. In any window, look for the "Extensions" icon in the toolbar, which looks like a jigsaw puzzle piece. Click it. (Alternately, you can open the main menu by clicking the three dots button and select More tools > Extensions.)

In Google Chrome, click the extensions button, which looks like a puzzle piece

When a menu pops up, select "Manage Extensions."

In Google Chrome, click

In the "Extensions" tab that appears, locate the name of the extension you'd like to uninstall or disable. Each extension has its own box on the Extensions tab.

If you'd like to disable the extension but not uninstall it, click the switch beside it to turn it off. At any time you can return to the Extensions tab and re-enable it by flipping that switch again.

In Google Chrome, click the switch to disable an extension.

If you'd like to uninstall the extension permanently, click the "Remove" button. This will completely remove the extension from Chrome and you won't be able to use it any more (unless you reinstall it later).

In Google Chrome, click

The extension will be removed completely.

Alternately, to quickly remove an extension, you can also click the "Extensions" button in the toolbar, click the vertical ellipses button beside the extension's name, then select "Remove from Chrome" from the menu.

Google Gemini comes to Chrome to help you write emails, cover letters, and anything else

If you buy through a BGR link, we may earn an affiliate commission, helping support our expert product labs.

One of the first and probably most commonly used features of ChatGPT and other generative AI products is writing text that meets specific needs. Maybe it’s an email reply, a cover letter, a story, a school paper, or anything else you can think of.

Text generation should be easy to access, and that’s where Google’s brand new Gemini feature for Chrome comes in. Aptly called “Help me write,” the new AI feature will be available on Chrome M122 for Mac and PC. For the time being, the feature is only compatible with English and only available in the US.

Google offered various examples in a blog post announcing the feature. Gemini will be able to write or rewrite anything you want. “Whether you’re selling a piece of furniture, submitting a restaurant review, or inquiring about the warranty on a recent purchase,” the AI will help directly in Chrome.

An example showing the Gemini-powered

“Help me write” lets you input a prompt and choose the length and tone of the message. It’ll then generate text based on your needs.

Select the text you've written, right-click it, and it'll serve as a prompt for Google Gemini.

The best part about the feature is that you don’t have to load Gemini in a different tab or worry about accounts and logins. The feature works with any text field on a website. Just input the text, and that will serve as the prompt for Gemini when you right-click on the text box.

I will point out the experimental aspect of the feature. It’s something Google will remind you of when it generates text for you. “This is an experimental Al writing aid and won’t always get it right,” Google will tell you, providing a link to more information about this Gemini feature.

Help me write will work in any text field on any website.

I’ll also remind you that Google might be working on a separate Gemini shortcut for Chrome that will let you chat with the AI directly from the URL bar.

Google Workspace: How to add a Zoom link to your Google Calendar

A dding a Google Meet conference call link to a meeting invitation sent from the calendar tool is easy. It isn't as easy to add a conference call link for a video conference platform, such as Zoom. We cover all the ways to add Zoom links to Google Calendar. After setting up the integration, adding a Zoom link to a Google Calendar invitation is simple, whether you use a Chromebook, a Windows or Mac computer, an Android camera phone , or an iPhone.

How to add a Zoom link with the add-on

You can use Zoom integration to add a link to a meeting invite after installing the Zoom for Google Workspace extension. Previously, you'd install a G Suite add-on called Zoom for G Suite . Since all Google accounts now use Google Workspace, Zoom updated the name in the Google Workspace Marketplace .

  • When you install the Zoom plugin, Google asks permission to share information with Zoom. Pick the Google account that will have this connection.
  • You'll see a list of permissions that you must allow to continue. Scroll down and select Allow to proceed. You get a confirmation message when the add-on is installed in your browser.
  • Open Google Calendar in Chrome or the web browser you prefer. A Zoom icon appears in the right sidebar, and a message confirms the Zoom plugin is active.
  • Double click a date to create a Google Calendar event.
  • Type a title for your meeting, uncheck All day , and set the start and end times.
  • Under the Event Details tab, select the down arrow to the right of Add Google Meet video conferencing . Choose Zoom .
  • If you see a Log In button, sign in to Zoom on the zoom.us website.
  • After logging in to Zoom, Google asks if you want to add conferencing via Zoom to Google Workspace. Check the box, then select Allow .
  • You'll see Zoom meeting details in place of the Add Google Meet video conferencing button.
  • You can send invitations from Google Calendar that include a Zoom link. The emails appear to be from your Gmail account.
  • A Guest column is on the right. Click the box labeled Add guests to select from a list of people from your contact list.
  • Type an email address to send an invitation to someone else. You'll see a warning if you enter an email address for someone who doesn't use Google Calendar. Remove the contact marked with an asterisk (*) to proceed.
  • Click the Save button in the upper-right corner.
  • If you added guests, click Send if you want to send invitation emails.
  • Select the Zoom button in the right sidebar to open the right side panel with more Zoom meeting options.

How to add a Zoom link to an invitation manually

How to change or blur your zoom background.

If you can't add a contact because they don't use the Google Calendar app, send an invitation with a Zoom link by other means. Use your own wording if you prefer a personal approach. Here's how to manually send a Google Calendar invitation with a Zoom link.

  • Create a Google Calendar event and add a Zoom conference (see the instructions above).
  • After adding the Zoom conference, right click the Join Zoom Meeting link and choose Copy link address from the drop-down menu.
  • Select Joining instructions to see Zoom meeting information.
  • A window shows the meeting information, including the topic, time, Zoom meeting link, meeting ID, and passcode. Select any or all of this text to paste into an email.

How to add a Zoom link from Android and iOS

If you installed the Zoom add-on for Google Calendar, you can add a Zoom video conferencing to your Google Calendar invite on Android and iOS. The process is the same regardless of whether you use an Android phone or an iPhone.

  • Google Meet is selected as the default conferencing tool when scheduling a new event. Click x to remove Google Meet from your event. Close
  • Select Zoom from the conferencing drop-down menu. Close
  • After filling in the meeting settings, tap the Save button in the upper-right corner.
  • Google Calendar asks you to confirm. Choose Send to proceed.
  • Your event appears on your calendar, and guests are sent invitations.

How to add a Google Meet link

If a Zoom meeting isn't essential, you can include a Google Meet link on an invitation. That saves you the time required to set up a Zoom account, install an add-on, and do other tasks needed to use Zoom.

  • Open Google Calendar in a browser and create a Google Calendar event.
  • Enter a title and set the start and end times for the new meeting.
  • A blue button under the Event Details tab allows you to Add Google Meet video conferencing . The button label changes and displays Join with Google Meet .
  • Use the Guest column to select from your contact list or type an email address.
  • If you added guests, Google Calendar asks if you want to send invitation emails. Click Send to do so.

Click the copy icon on the right of the meeting link to copy a link you can share via email or social media.

Should you use Zoom or Google Meet?

Both services have robust meeting options and can handle multiple people at once. If everyone involved can use Google Meet, that's probably the easiest method. There's no need to download or install anything since it runs in the browser or from the popular Gmail app on smartphones. Plus, you can use Google Meet on any device .

Zoom can host more participants and has additional service integrations. This makes it a popular choice for larger enterprises.

That's without thinking about the many video conferencing options . The tool you use is often decided by the organization you work for or your client. It's best to know how to handle multiple situations. We have a list of the best video chat apps on Android that you can check out.

Using an integration tool for complex workflows

The solutions above work great for a simple Google Calendar and Zoom integration. You'll rely on a third-party integration tool if you need or want to get more sophisticated. For example, you may want to integrate your Google Calendar with a Zoom form. There's no way of doing this within Zoom or Workspace. You'll need to look to the likes of Zapier, Make, or Workato for a solution.

These tools give endless possibilities to connect disparate digital tools, making them essential to complicated workflows.

Zoom call links in invitations

In the modern work environment, it's best to be able to work with multiple digital tools. If you use Workspace or Google Calendar for scheduling , integrate your Zoom account. That way, you can cater to multiple preferences and take advantage of a wider set of features.
