Remote Desktop Connection is Windows 11’s built-in app for connecting to remote computers. You can use it to remotely access another PC, which comes in handy for personal or support-related use. In Windows 11 Professional and Enterprise editions, you can also enable Remote Desktop to set up a host PC for remote computing.

To connect to a remote PC, you’ll need to open the Remote Desktop Connection tool. Once done, you can then enter the login credentials for the remote PC to connect to it through the Remote Desktop Connection window. How to Enable Remote Desktop Connection on Windows 11

If you want your PC to be a host computer, you’ll need to enable Remote Desktop on that PC's copy of Windows 11. Note that you can only activate that feature in Enterprise and Professional editions of Microsoft’s latest desktop platform, as is also the case for Windows 10. You can enable Remote Desktop as follows:

  • Click the taskbar’s Start button.
  • Open the Settings app that’s pinned to the Start menu.
  • Select the Remote Desktop navigation option.

  • Select the Confirm option on the Remote Desktop Settings prompt.
  • As an optional extra, click the small arrow beside the Remote Desktop toggle button. Then select the Require devices to use Network Level Authentication Connect (Recommended) option.

Thereafter, you can connect to your host PC remotely with other computers and mobile devices. To do so, you’ll need to enter the required login credentials for it and enter them into the remote access software. On Windows desktops and laptops, you can do that by opening the built-in Remote Desktop Connection accessory.

1. Open Remote Desktop Connection With the Windows 11 Search Tool

Windows 11’s search tool is a handy way to find software, files, and other accessories on your PC. As such, you can use it to find and open Remote Desktop Connection.

  • To open the search tool, click the magnifying glass icon on Windows 11’s taskbar.

  • Alternatively, you can click its Run as administrator option within the search tool.

2. Open Remote Desktop Connection With the Run Tool

  • Click inside Explorer’s address bar and erase the current path in it.

Remote Desktop Connection is also among the apps and system utilities within the Windows Tools folder. That folder is accessible on the Start menu. You can access Remote Desktop Connection by opening its Windows Tools folder with the Start menu as follows.

If you prefer, you can have a taskbar shortcut for Remote Desktop Connection instead. Right-click the Remote Desktop Connection shortcut and select Show more options > Pin to taskbar . Selecting that option will add an RDC shortcut to the taskbar as shown in the snapshot below. You can remove the desktop one by right-clicking it and selecting Delete .

9. Open Remote Desktop Connection With a Keyboard Shortcut

You can add a hotkey to an RDC desktop shortcut. By doing so, you’ll be able to open Remote Desktop Connection with a keyboard shortcut. First, set up a desktop shortcut as outlined for method five. Then you can add a hotkey to that shortcut as follows.

  • Right-click the Remote Desktop Connection shortcut on the desktop and select Properties .

  • Press the R key to set up a Ctrl + Alt + R hotkey.
  • Click the Apply button to save the new keyboard shortcut.

Now you can press Ctrl + Alt + R to bring up Remote Desktop Connection whenever you need it. However, don’t delete the desktop shortcut for it. That shortcut must remain in place for its hotkey to work.

10. Open Remote Desktop Connection With the Context Menu

The context menu is the right-click menu you can open from the desktop. That menu doesn’t include Remote Desktop Connection by default. However, you can add a shortcut for opening Remote Desktop Connection to the context menu with a relatively straightforward registry tweak as follows:

  • Start the Registry Editor app by pressing the Windows button + R keyboard shortcut, entering a regedit command inside the Run dialog, and clicking OK .
  • Click in the registry location bar and erase the path there.
  • Input this location for the shell key inside Registry Editor’s address bar and press Enter : Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\
  • Click the shell key with your mouse’s right button and select New .
  • Input Remote Desktop Connection for the new key’s title.
  • Right-click Remote Desktop Connection to select New > Key options.
  • Next, input command inside the text box for the new subkey.

Now you can open the Remote Desktop Connection app from your desktop’s context menu. Right-click any empty area of the Windows 11 desktop to select Show more options for viewing the classic context menu. You’ll see a new Remote Desktop Connection shortcut on the classic context menu. Click that shortcut to access the Remote Desktop Connection app.

You can remove the Remote Desktop Connection context menu shortcut any time you wish. To do so, return to the shell registry location specified in step three above. Right-click the Remote Desktop Connection key you added and select Delete > Yes .

So, there are various ways you can open Remote Desktop Connection in Windows 11. The quickest and most direct methods are to open it from the desktop or with a hotkey, which you’ll need shortcuts for. Or you can open it via Run, the search tool, File Explorer, and Windows Terminal. Choose whatever method you prefer for opening Remote Desktop Connection.

How to use Remote Desktop

Use Remote Desktop on your Windows, Android, or iOS device to connect to a Windows 10 PC from afar. Here's how to set up your PC to allow remote connections and then connect to the PC you set up.

Note:  While a Remote Desktop server (as in, the PC that you are connecting to ) needs to be running a Pro edition of Windows, a client machine (the device you are connecting from ) can be running any edition of Windows (Pro or Home), or even a different operating system altogether.

Set up the PC you want to connect to so it allows remote connections:

Make sure you have Windows 11 Pro. To check this, select Start   , and open  Settings   . Then, under System , select About , and under Windows specifications , look for Edition . For info on how to get Windows 11 Pro, go to Upgrade Windows Home to Windows Pro.

When you're ready, select Start  , and open  Settings   . Then, under System , select Remote Desktop , set Remote Desktop to On , and then select Confirm .

Make note of the name of this PC under PC name . You'll need this later.

Use Remote Desktop to connect to the PC you set up:

On your local Windows PC: In the search box on the taskbar, type Remote Desktop Connection , and then select Remote Desktop Connection . In Remote Desktop Connection, type the name of the PC you want to connect to (from Step 1), and then select Connect .

On your Windows, Android, or iOS device: Open the Remote Desktop app (available for free from Microsoft Store, Google Play, and the Mac App Store), and add the name of the PC that you want to connect to (from Step 1).  Select the remote PC name that you added, and then wait for the connection to complete.

Make sure you have Windows 10 Pro. To check this, go to Start    > Settings    > System  > About and look for Edition . For info on how to get Windows 10 Pro, go to Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro.

When you're ready, select Start > Settings  > System > Remote Desktop , and turn on Enable Remote Desktop .

Make note of the name of this PC under How to connect to this PC . You'll need this later.

MSTSC Parameters

Several parameters are available.

  • /v:server: Specifies the remote computer to which you want to connect.
  • /console: Connects to the console session of the specified Windows 2000 Server.
  • /f: Starts Remote Desktop connection in full-screen mode.
  • /w:width /h:height : Specifies the dimensions of the Remote Desktop screen.
  • /edit: Opens the specified .rdp file for editing.
  • /migrate: Migrates legacy connection files that were created with Client Connection Manager to new .rdp connection files.
  • /span: Span the length of the available area.
  • /admin: Log in to administer the server.

MSTSC Commonly Used Commands

For the average user, the commands that are probably the most relevant to you are /v and /f. 

Note: If you are using the computer name to remote on to a machine, you must be on the same network like a VPN or be on the same internal network or you must have previously set up in a host file or have DNS configured correctly.

Let’s say the computer I’m trying to get on has a name of computer1 and an IP of 192.168.255.255 .

Our syntax is mstsc {ConnectionFile|/v:server} [/console] [/f] [/w:width /h:height]

Full Screen

In the run command or shortcut I would type in mstsc /v:computer1 /f or

In the run command I would type in mstsc /v:192.168.255.255 /f

Assign a Height and Width

If I want to individually force my width and height (or assign both), I could use something like

mstsc /v:192.168.255.255 /w:1024 /h:768

mstsc /v:192.168.255.255 /w:1600

Span across multiple (2+) monitors

If you’re like me, you like dual monitors. Only problem is when you RDP to another computer, you only use one of your monitors. Sometimes I like to have the extra space so I use the /span command.

For a shortcut or the run command:  mstsc /v:192.168.255.255 /span or

mstsc /span

When using /span , your remote desktop window will get treated like its 1 giant monitor.

mstsc /admin

If you are a server administrator and you get something like:

  • A black screen after you RDP to a server (assuming your server hasn’t crashed)

mstsc /admin command will allow you remote on to the server.

When saving the RDP file, check off the Save my password checkbox. This will save your password to the .RDP file in an encrypted format. Be careful though, as people have found out how to decrypt it :

Try editing the .rdp files directly. I found an article, How rdp passwords are encrypted , saying how, and deep down, in the posts, there is some code for how to do this in C# too:

Alternativly create a batch script (.bat) with the following lines:

cmdkey /generic:"computername or IP" /user:"username" /pass:"password" mstsc /v:"computer name or IP"

Note replace the IP, username and password in the script with the valid credentials.

Now run the script by simply double clicking on it.

This works.

Well, partially correct, you cannot really edit the Microsoft Credentials easily, and the command is not rdp , but if you run the command mstsc it will correct the 'save password' issue on WinXP.

Access Remote Desktop Via Commandline

Just open a CMD window, type mstsc , put in the PC name or IP, click Options, and go on your merry way, but do a Save As... so you have a working shortcut for later.

How to get started using Remote Desktop on Windows 11

You can access your device remotely through the local network or internet, and in this guide, you will learn how on Windows 11.

  • Click the Remote Desktop page from the right side.
  • Turn on the Remote Desktop toggle switch.
  • Click the Confirm button.

Once you complete the steps, the protocol will enable, and the system will open the required firewall rules to allow connections to the computer.

If you have a third-party security solution, you may have to configure the firewall rules manually.

Allow remote connections on router

You must configure the router to set up a remote session over the internet. In addition, you will also need to determine the public IP address of the remote computer to connect from outside the network.

Configure static IP address

Although setting up a static IP address configuration is not a requirement, it's recommended. Usually, a computer receives a dynamic IP address from the DHCP server (the router), indicating that it can change anytime. If you want to avoid potential connection problems, it's best to set a static IP address on the device so the configuration never changes.

To set a static IP address on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Click on Network & Internet .
  • Click the Ethernet page on the right side.
  • Quick note: If you have a wireless adapter, click on "Wi-Fi," and then click the connection properties option to access the settings.
  • Under the "IP settings" section, click the Edit button.
  • Select the Manual option.
  • Turn on the IPv4 toggle switch.
  • Configure a static IP address for Windows 11 — for example, 10.1.4.155.
  • Quick note: When assigning a static configuration, it's recommended to use an IP address that is outside of the DHCP scope. For example, if the router is configured to assign addresses from 10. 1.4.100 to 10.1.4.150, then you could use the 10.1.4.155 address.
  • Confirm a "Subnet prefix length" (subnet mask) — for example, 255.255.255.0.
  • Specify a Default Gateway address.
  • Specify a "Preferred DNS address" (required).
  • (Optional) Choose the "On (automatic template)" option in the "DNS over HTTPS" setting to enable DNS over HTTPS (DoH) encryption.
  • (Optional) Specify an Alternate DNS address .
  • Click the Save button.

After you complete the steps, the static configuration will apply, minimizing connection problems in the future.

Determine public IP address

Another requirement is the public IP address of the remote network to connect to the computer through the internet.

To find the public IP address of the network, use these steps:

  • Open the web browser.
  • Open your preferred search engine — for example, Bing or Google.
  • Search for "What's my IP?"
  • Confirm the public IP address in the first result.

Once you complete the steps, you can use the address to connect remotely.

When you subscribe to an internet provider, you would typically receive a dynamic public address as a residential customer, which means that the public IP address may sometimes change.

If you want to avoid connection problems, you have two options. You can contact the internet provider and ask for a static configuration, or you can set up a "Dynamic Domain Name System" (DDNS) service (such as DynDNS, OpenDNS, No-IP, or Asus.com for Asus routers), which can track the public IP changes so you can always connect to your network.

Configure port forwarding

On Windows 11, you will need to forward the "TCP" port "3389" on the router to allow remote connections outside the local network.

The router experience can be different depending on the manufacturer. It's recommended to check the manufacturer support website for more specific details, but you can still use these instructions as a reference.

To forward a port on the router, use these steps:

  • Open Start .
  • Search for Command Prompt and click the top result to open the app.
  • Type the following command to check the current TCP/IP configuration and press Enter : ipconfig
  • Under the "IPv4 Address" field, confirm the device address — for example, 10.1.4.155 .
  • Under the "Default Gateway" field, confirm the address, which is the router address — for example, 10.1.4.1 .
  • Type the IP address of the router (default gateway) in the address bar and press Enter.
  • Sign in to the router (if applicable).
  • Quick tip: If you have never done this and you are using the router provided by the ISP, you may be able to find the information on a sticker attached to the device.
  • Open the Port Forwarding settings page.
  • Confirm that the Port Forwarding service is enabled (if applicable).
  • Under the port forwarding list, click (in this case) the Add profile button.
  • Create a new port forward with the required information — for example:
  • Service name: (optional) Specify the reference name for the service — for instance, Office PC Remote.
  • Protocol: TCP.
  • External Port: 3389.
  • Internal Port: 3389.
  • Internal IP Address: Specify the IP address of the computer to connect — for instance, 10.1.4.155
  • Click the OK button.

Once you complete the steps, the settings will apply, allowing remote desktop connections to the local computer through the internet.

How to connect to remote computer on Windows 11

The easiest way to connect to a computer over the network is by using the Remote Desktop app.

Install Remote Desktop app

If the Remote Desktop app isn't available on your computer, you will need to install it manually.

To install the Remote Desktop app on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop app page .
  • Click the Get in Store app button.
  • Click the Install button.
  • Click the Open button.

After you complete the steps, you can open the app to set up a connection to a remote computer.

Start Remote Desktop connection

To set up a new remote connection on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Open the Remote Desktop app.
  • Click the "+ Add" button in the top right.
  • Click the PCs option.
  • Under the "PC name" section, specify the network address of the remote computer (without spaces).
  • Quick note: This would be the local IP address if the computer is inside the private network. Or the public IP address if the computer is in a different network over the internet.
  • Under the "User account" section, click the "+" (plus) button in the top-right.
  • Confirm the account information to sign in for the remote computer.
  • Quick note: If the remote computer uses a Microsoft account, enter that account's sign-in information. On the other hand, if the remote device uses a local account, enter the local username and password to sign in.
  • (Optional) Under the "Display name" section, confirm the "account" nickname.
  • (Optional) Under the "Display name" section, confirm the "remote connection" name — for example, MyRemotePC .
  • Click the Show more option.
  • (Optional) Choose the corresponding additional settings as applicable.
  • Quick tip: Some of the additional settings include the option to connect using an admin session, configure the remote session screen resolution, and clipboard.
  • Under the "Saved Desktops" section, click the connection to start a remote session.
  • Check the "Don't ask about this certificate again" option (if applicable).
  • Click the Connect button.

After you complete the steps, the connection to the remote computer should start immediately.

If you want to terminate the session, you can close the window or click the three-dots menu button from the top-middle and click the "Disconnect" button.

Change app and connection settings

The Remote Desktop app includes settings to configure various other options and modify existing settings.

Change general settings

To change general settings in the Remote Desktop app, use these steps:

  • Click the Settings button in the top-right.
  • Select the user account from the list.
  • Click the Edit (pen) button to adjust the settings.

You can also add more user accounts (with the plus "+" button) to connect to different devices or as another user.

On the same page, you can also set up a gateway server, and the Group option enables you to organize connections into different and more manageable groups.

Customize session settings

To change the Remote Desktop session settings, use these steps:

  • Turn on or off the "Start connections in full screen" toggle switch.
  • Turn on or off the "Start each connection in a new window" toggle switch.
  • Choose how the remote desktop session will appear on the screen using the "When resizing the app" drop-down menu:
  • Stretch the content, preserving aspect ratio (recommended).
  • Stretch the content.
  • Show scroll bar.
  • Choose whether shortcuts (such as "Ctrl + C" and "Ctrl + V" ) work only locally or on the remote desktop using the "Use keyboard command with a" setting:
  • My local PC only.
  • My remote session when it's in full screen (recommended).
  • My remote session when it's in use.
  • (Optional) Turn on the "Prevent the screen from timing out" toggle switch.

You will also find an option to show a thumbnail preview of the connection to make it easier to switch between connections inside the app.

Customize connection settings

To edit the settings of a connection on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Click the menu (three-dots) button in the connection and select the Edit option.
  • Change the computer name, account, and settings.
  • Click the menu (three-dots) button in the connection and choose the Remove option to delete it.
  • Click the menu (three-dots) button in the connection and choose the "Pin to Start" option to pin the connection to the Start menu.

Once you complete the steps, the changes will apply automatically in the connection.

How to troubleshoot remote desktop connection on Windows 11

On Windows 11, the Remote Desktop app is straightforward and should work without issues. However, if you cannot connect, there are some troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Confirm firewall settings

When you configure the protocol for remote connection, the system also opens the ports in the firewall to allow connections, but it's not always the case. Check the firewall to ensure connections are allowed if the problem is related to the connection.

To enable remote connections through the firewall on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Open the Windows Security app.
  • Click on Firewall & network protection .
  • Click the "Allow an app through firewall" option.
  • Click the Change settings button.
  • Check the Remote Desktop option and check the options for Private and Public .

After you complete the steps, you can check the connection again.

If the device has a third-party antivirus or firewall, you can disable the security application to confirm the problem if the device has a third-party antivirus or firewall. You may need to check the software support website for more specific details to complete this task.

Check Remote Desktop services

If the required system service isn't working on the remote computer, you won't be able to connect.

To confirm that the remote desktop service is running on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Search for Services and click the top result to open the app.
  • Select the "Remote Desktop Services" and review the "Status" column, which should read Running .
  • If the service is not running, right-click it, and select the Start option.

After completing the steps, you should be able to connect to the remote computer.

Configure IP address instead name

A domain name translation may not always work as expected. Rather than using the computer name, it's better to use the computer's IP address to establish a remote connection.

Of course, you would do this by ensuring you are using the correct IP address. If you plan to connect to the same network, use the local IP address . If the connection will happen through the internet, use the correct public IP address to connect over the internet.

Switch to local account instead of Microsoft account

You may also encounter authentication problems with a Microsoft account because you may have the account configured with the two-step verification or passwordless security feature. Consider using a local account to authenticate with the remote computer if this is the case.

To create a local account on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Click on Accounts .
  • Click the Other users page on the right side.
  • Under the "Other users" section, click the Add account option for the "Add other user" setting.
  • Click the "I don't have this person's sign-in information" option.
  • Click the "Add a user without a Microsoft account" option.
  • Confirm the name of the new local account.
  • Create a password for the account.
  • Confirm the security questions to reset the password (if applicable).
  • Click the Next button.
  • Select the new account and click the "Change account type" button.
  • Choose the Administrator option.

After you complete the steps, use the newly created account to connect to a remote computer using the Remote Desktop app.

Disable TCP/IPv6 addressing

On Windows 11, the networking system uses the IP version 4 (IPv4) and version 6 (IPv6) stacks, and this sometimes can cause connectivity problems with the remote desktop protocol (RDP). If this is the case, you may want to disable the IPv6 networking stack to resolve connection issues.

To disable the IPv6 networking stack on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Open Control Panel .
  • Click on Network and Internet .
  • Click on Network and Sharing Center .
  • Click the "Change adapter settings" option from the left navigation pane.
  • Right-click the active adapter and select the Properties option.
  • Clear the "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" option.
  • Restart the computer.

Once you complete the steps, the networking version 6 stack will disable, allowing you to connect using a remote connection.

Unblock remote connection port

If you have already confirmed the settings and it's impossible to connect, the internet provider might have a security policy to block the required ports. If this is the case, contact your internet service provider for assistance.

I outlined the steps to connect to a device inside a private network and through the internet but allowing remote desktop connections (mainly through the internet) could be a security risk.

Remember that having the remote desktop protocol enabled and opening ports could allow malicious individuals to gain unauthorized access to the computer. If you need to use this feature, use a strong password, disable the remote desktop service, and remove the port forwarding settings from the router when they are no longer needed.

Create and Use Local or Remote RDP Shortcuts

Use BeyondTrust to start a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) session with a remote Windows or Linux System. Because RDP sessions are converted to BeyondTrust sessions, users can share or transfer sessions, and sessions can be automatically audited and recorded as your administrator has defined for your site.

To use Local RDP through BeyondTrust , you must be on the same network segment as the target system and must have the user account permission Allowed Jump Methods: Local RDP .

To use Remote RDP through BeyondTrust , you must have access to a Jumpoint and must have the user account permissions Allowed Jump Methods: Remote RDP .

Create a Local RDP Shortcut

To create a Local Microsoft RDP shortcut, click the Create button in the Jump interface. From the dropdown, select Local RDP . RDP shortcuts appear in the Jump interface with Jump Clients and other types of Jump Item shortcuts.

Organize and manage existing Jump Items by selecting one or more Jump Items and clicking Properties .

To view the properties of multiple Jump Items, the items selected must be the same type (e.g., all Jump Clients, all Remote Jumps, etc.).To review properties of other types of Jump Items, please see the appropriate section in this guide.

Create New Local RDP Jump Shortcut prompt

Enter a Name for the Jump Item. This name identifies the item in the session tabs. This string has a maximum of 128 characters.

Enter the Hostname / IP of the system you wish to access.

By default, the RDP server listens on port 3389, which is therefore the default port BeyondTrust attempts. If the remote RDP server is configured to use a different port, add it after the hostname or IP address in the form of <hostname>:<port> or <ipaddress>:<port> (for example, 10.10.24.127:40000).

Provide the Username to sign in as, along with the Domain .

Select the Quality at which to view the remote screen. This cannot be changed during the RDP session. Select the color optimization mode to view the remote screen. If you are going to be primarily sharing video, select Video Optimized ; otherwise, select between Black and White (uses less bandwidth), Few Colors , More Colors , or Full Color (uses more bandwidth). Both Video Optimized and Full Color modes allow you to view the actual desktop wallpaper.

To start a console session rather than a new session, check the Console Session box.

If the server's certificate cannot be verified, you receive a certificate warning. Checking Ignore Untrusted Certificate allows you to connect to the remote system without seeing this message.

Move Jump Items from one Jump Group to another using the Jump Group dropdown. The ability to move Jump Items to or from different Jump Groups depends upon your account permissions.

Further organize Jump Items by entering the name of a new or existing Tag . Even though the selected Jump Items are grouped together under the tag, they are still listed under the Jump Group in which each is pinned. To move a Jump Item back into its top-level Jump Group, leave this field blank.

Select the Public Portal through which this Jump Item should connect. If a session policy is assigned to this public portal, that policy may affect the permissions allowed in sessions started through this Jump Item. The ability to set the public portal depends on your account permissions.

Jump Items include a Comments field for a name or description, which makes sorting, searching, and identifying Jump Items faster and easier.

To set when users are allowed to access this Jump Item, choose a Jump Policy . These policies are configured by your administrator in the /login interface.

Choose a Session Policy to assign to this Jump Item. The session policy assigned to this Jump Item has the highest priority when setting session permissions. The ability to set a session policy depends on your account permissions.

Create a Remote RDP Shortcut

To create a Remote Microsoft RDP shortcut, click the Create button in the Jump interface. From the dropdown, select Remote RDP . RDP shortcuts appear in the Jump interface with Jump Clients and other types of Jump Item shortcuts.

To view the properties of multiple Jump Items, the items selected must be the same type (e.g., all Jump Clients, all Remote Jumps, etc.). To review properties of other types of Jump Items, please see the appropriate section in this guide.

Create New Remote RDP Jump Shortcut prompt

From the Jumpoint dropdown, select the network that hosts the computer you wish to access. The representative console remembers your Jumpoint choice the next time you create this type of Jump Item. Enter the Hostname / IP of system you wish to access.

Use an RDP Shortcut

To use a Jump shortcut to start a session, select the shortcut from the Jump interface and click the Jump button.

Enter RDP Credentials

You are prompted to enter the password for the username you specified earlier.

Your RDP session now begins. Begin screen sharing to view the remote desktop. You can send the Ctrl-Alt-Del command, capture a screenshot of the remote desktop, and share clipboard contents. You can also share or transfer the RDP session with other logged-in BeyondTrust users, following the normal rules of your user account settings.

Multi-Monitor Support

An option allows you to open a Remote Support connection expanded across all the monitors on the client computer regardless of the client monitor configuration. With this feature, you can fully utilize all the monitors connected to the client computer, therefore being able to adjust screen sizing and scaling during an RDP session across multiple monitors.

If you are using full screen view while using this feature, the remote system is displayed across all of your monitors.

Jump Items can be set to allow multiple users to simultaneously access the same Jump Item. If set to Start New Session , then a new independent session starts for each user who Jumps to a specific RDP Jump Item. The RDP configuration on the endpoint controls any further behavior regarding simultaneous RDP connections.

Push RDP files to clients using Intune and PowerShell

Some companies want to make RDP connections very easily accessible for their users, by adding a shortcut to the users’ desktop. This provides more convenience for users that have to access remote machines often. In this post I will show you step-by-step how to push RDP shortcuts to clients using Intune and PowerShell.

First of all, you will want to create a basic RDP file on your computer to use as an example. This can either be your own computer or a (virtual) machine in the target environment. Open mstsc.exe on the computer and enter the target RDP address. Don’t forget to check the “Allow me to save credentials” box and click Save As. Choose a location you can find and save the RDP file.

Once you have saved this .rdp file, you can open it with your favorite code editor. I use Visual Studio Code , but you can use any editor. The opened file is a block of text on multiple lines and will look similar to this this:

The next step is to wrap this information in a neat PowerShell script. This is not a complicated or long script, so anyone with basic PowerShell knowledge can do this.

You will first declare the variable named $rdpFile and save a so-called here-string to this variable. Here-strings are blocks of tekst. Where regular strings can only contain one line, here-strings can contain multiple lines. The here-string is used to put the block of text containing the RDP file into a single variable. This is an example on how to create a here-string:

In the following picture, you can see that the text that was added to the variable is formatted the same when you output the variable:

This here-string can also be used to create a neat RDP file and add it to a variable. When using my example RDP file, the code will look like this:

From here, you will need to make sure the variable will be executed on the users desktops. In order to do that, the easiest solution is to use the public desktop. This will make sure the variable, or RDP file, which is how it will end up, is added to each users desktop. Doing this requires a simple one-liner, which uses the previously created $rdpFile and a name for the new shortcut:

Now add this oneliner at the bottom of your script containing the here-string. You can add as many shortcuts as you want. Just repeat the process, make sure to declare a new variable using the here-string and add the oneliner at the bottom, using a unique name for your RDP file. By adding more RDP files to your script and using the Out-File cmdlet after each declaration, you can bulk push RDP files for your users.

This is all you need to add one or more RDP files to the users’ desktop. Save your entire script in an accessible location.

In Intune, you can add custom scripts to your devices. These scripts run once only, unless changes are made. More background information on how to use scripts in Intune and how they work, as well as the prerequisites to use scripts, can be found in the Microsoft documentation .

Navigate to the Microsoft Endpoint Manager portal and find the the Scripts blade, under Devices, as shown here.

When adding a script, you can choose for either MacOS or Windows 10 or later. In this tutorial we will focus on Windows 10 and later.

Choose to add a script for Windows 10 and later and give the script a functional title. You can also add a description, which is always useful for manageability, but this is optional. In the next step, you upload your script.

You can leave all the default settings, which means everything is set to no, in this scenario. If you want to know more about what each of these settings do, I’d recommend reading the Microsoft documentation about these scripts .

In the third step, don’t forget to assign your script to the desired user group. This will make sure the scripts are being pushed to the users’ desktops.

Below, you can see what this should look like in Intune.

Your script will now run once a user starts their computer and this is how you push RDP shortcuts to clients using Intune and PowerShell.
