Getting Started With CNOWv2
Preparing for a new term can be a bit like piecing together a puzzle, especially when you add a new online learning platform to the mix. If you’re teaching with CNOWv2 for the first time, use these tips to confidently build your syllabus, set up your course and prepare your students.
Build your syllabus with CNOWv2 in mind
Here are some tips to help you design an effective syllabus for your CNOWv2 course.
Require CNOWv2 for 20% of your students’ grade
Students are less likely to use CNOWv2 and realize its benefits unless it’s a required part of their grade. We recommend assigning CNOWv2 for 20% of students’ overall grade to encourage them to complete their assignments regularly.
Include purchase and enrollment instructions
Make sure it’s simple and easy for students to enroll in your course and purchase CNOWv2 with these steps:
- Enrolling in CNOWv2: Once you’ve created your CNOWv2 course, you’ll see a link to Student Registration instructions on your course page . If you’re not integrating your course with a Learning Management System (LMS), you can copy, download or print these instructions for your students. The instructions include an enrollment link they’ll use to access your course. However, if your course is LMS-integrated, visit our Start Strong site and select CengageNOW. Then, follow the instructions based on your course type to receive personalized instructions for your class. Copy the link at the top of the page to include it in your syllabus. You could also use the Start Strong website to provide instructions for classes that aren’t LMS-integrated but will still need the enrollment link.
- Purchasing CNOWv2: Once a student has enrolled in your course, they will be prompted to create a Cengage account and purchase their materials directly from the platform. If students already purchased their materials from the campus bookstore or from another vendor, they can enter their access code.
Define your class policies
Want to change your class policies, but aren’t sure what CNOWv2 will support? Let’s dig into the common settings you can use in CNOWv2 and incorporate them in your class policies.
- Assignment Due Dates: We recommend giving students consistent due dates each week to keep them on track. Within CNOWv2 , you can customize assignment due dates in bulk, or individually.
- Extensions: Within your gradebook, you can grant an extended due date to a student, or multiple students, for any duration of time.
- Extra Credit: In CNOWv2 , you can mark any assignment as extra credit in the assignment settings .
- Past Due Assignments: Determine if your students will receive a penalty for submitting an assignment late and customize this in your assignment settings.
- Drop specific assignments from the gradebook, such as the lowest scores or the lowest score in a specific category like homework.
- Excuse students from assignments. This will not impact their overall grade.
Tip: When you set up your CNOWv2 course, include a link to your syllabus so students can easily access it.
Top tips for setting up your course
Don’t forget, you have a Cengage Digital Success Specialist available to help you set up your course if needed—just let your representative know that you need assistance. But if you want to give it a shot on your own, these tips will help you get started.
Use a prebuilt template: When you create your course using a prebuilt template , it automatically populates all your course assignments for you. Then, you can add, remove or edit assignments from your course.
Create a unique assignment template: Based on your class policies above, you’ll want to customize an assignment template to ensure all your assignments align with your policies. To do this, edit one of your assignments, change the settings to align with your policies and select Save as New Set . Then, you can use this assignment template for the entire class and edit it for specific assignments as needed.
Bulk-reschedule assignments: If you followed the last tip, you’ll have a prebuilt course ready for you. However, you’ll still need to change the due dates to align with your course. On your Assignments home page, you can select your assignments in bulk by checking the boxes on the far left, then select Modify Dates . Then, you can set the same dates for all assignments, or change them individually by selecting Specify Dates for Each at the top.
Determine who students should contact with questions: While setting up your course, choose who students should contact for questions while completing assignments. This is a great place to put your teacher’s assistant’s email. You can always change the email address later by selecting the Edit button next to the course, on your Courses page.
Introduce students to CNOWv2
Some students may be new to CNOWv2 . Introduce them to the platform by incorporating the following into your syllabus:
- A brief description of CNOWv2 : make sure students understand what CNOWv2 is and how it will benefit their education. For example:
- CNOWv2 prepares Accounting and Tax students for success in the classroom and in the real world with tools and feedback to help you succeed when working on your own. These include videos, study plans and question feedback, as well as access to powerful Business, Tax and Accounting tools you’ll use in the real world.
- A student introduction video: This video walks students through the key features in CNOWv2 , with tips for making the most of the platform in your class.
Trying a new online learning platform can be overwhelming, but the key is to be prepared! And know your Cengage Representatives and Digital Support Specialists are here to help you. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need a hand getting started.

Tips for Setting up and Managing Your Online Learning Platform
Kristin McDonald is a professor and Associate Chair of Human Services and Sociology at Post University
As the education landscape continues to shift, the demand to adopt online learning platforms is at an all-time high. Online learning provides students with the flexibility and self-paced options that they are seeking. Study after study reveals that online learning results in higher retention rates and graduation rates .
As technology advances and we continue to function in a virtual world, students are looking for a meaningful online learning experience that may be new to many institutes of learning. Regardless of the need for eLearning, how do you make the jump and feel confident in your online learning platform? Check out these helpful tips to consider as you set up and manage your online learning platform.
Getting Started
Once you’ve made the case for adopting an online learning platform and selected a platform that meets your needs, you will be facing your first challenge—deciding how to develop your content or courses and how to implement your eLearning platform. Some folks opt to outsource to third-party developers who have expertise in instructional design. Others form in-house teams who are available to support faculty and staff in daily tasks.
Do Your Homework
Once all the players are at the table, make sure there is a demand for your course. Regardless of your decision around the development process, having a roadmap for your course and centering your development around learning outcomes will make the process effective and successful. Your roadmap will support you in starting the process.
Supporting Learners and Instructors
Even though many of us have adapted to technology in most aspects of our lives, you must be sure to provide support to all users before your learning platform goes live.
One important option to consider is offering on-demand user support through a chat window or support line so issues can be addressed in real time.
Most online learning platforms also create opportunities for peer engagement. However, without proper onboarding, many of these features are overlooked. Similarly, many instructors often only use the most basic functions.
With proper training, instructors can fill their toolbelt with strategies to engage students and meet a variety of learning styles . Offering regular training sessions and a library of on-demand tutorials can help both students and instructors gain confidence in navigating your online platform.
Establishing Boundaries
While instructors and learners will access the content through the online learning platform, you may consider limiting some features and permissions. Most learning platforms afford the opportunity to create a master copy of your course that is accessible only to administrators. This is where you would create the content including any assignments, date releases, or grade calculation formulas. Once the master shell is built, it can be duplicated each time you are running the course. In those individual copies, you may want to limit anything that is not vital to teaching the content. This will reduce the likelihood of any errors or major changes. If instructors or learners make too many changes, you may not be able to accurately assess your learning outcomes which can limit your overall success with eLearning.
Creating a Community
While we all have become more comfortable in a virtual world, creating a sense of community is still a challenge. Many learners appreciate the flexibility of asynchronous learning , however, the desire for live interaction often lingers. Be sure that instructors are trained to effectively use options like discussion threads, video uploads, voice recording features, or even scheduling live drop-in sessions. You may also want to consider additional tools that complement your learning platform to enhance engagement among users, ultimately increasing course satisfaction.
Testing Your Content
When your online learning platform is ready to go live, you want to be sure that the content is relevant, and the learning experience is engaging. What better way to test your content than to engage real users? As you move through the development process, you may consider selecting colleagues, students, subject matter experts, or designers to move through the content posing as learners. You may also develop demo learner accounts to preview the learner experience as you build your content. Testing your content helps to address any concerns or confusion.
Once you have the green light, you will reach the most exciting point—going live! As your content transitions into the maintenance phase, remember that you can always go back and make changes. Consider including end-of-course surveys for both learners and instructors to make improvements as needed. Ultimately, allow your learning outcomes to guide you. If you find you are falling short, take time to reevaluate your content. Not only will this ensure you are successful in your instruction, but it will also continue to increase engagement, retention, and learner satisfaction.
Setting up and managing their online learning platform is just one of many new tasks instructors have taken on in the last few years. Find out more in our new Faces of Faculty report.

Neil Patrick Harris Says He's Going to 'Ramp Up My Rizz' as His 2 Kids Join Him in First TikTok
The actor's 13-year-old twins Harper Grace and Gideon Scott joined in for his debut

Neil Patrick Harris has joined TikTok — though it may not be the news his teens wanted to hear.
Ahead of the weekend, the How I Met Your Mother star, 50, recruited his 13-year-old twins, daughter Harper Grace and son Gideon Scott (whom he shares with his husband David Burtka ), for his debut on the social media platform.
“Ok, ok. Are you guys so excited?” Harris asked as he backed away from a camera, making sure he, Harper and Gideon were all in the frame.
Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
Talking over one another, the kids both responded, letting their dad know they weren’t too sure about his next move.
“I’m joining the TikTac,” the actor then said enthusiastically.
“TikTok,” Gideon said, correcting his father while rubbing his head in apparent despair in the video announcement. Harper stood silent nearby, but her facial expressions revealed she seemed less than certain about her dad's new social media channel.
Harris continued, happily sharing that he would soon “have so many followers” before using a bit of Gen Z lingo - the viral term "rizz," which is short for charisma, and has been defined by dictionary publisher Oxford University Press as "“someone’s ability to attract another person through style, charm, or attractiveness.”
“I’m gonna ramp up my rizz ,” the Gone Girl actor said before he was cut off with a stern warning from Gideon to “never, ever say that again.”
After Harris said his new TikTok account would make him “a snack,” Harper let out a shriek, covered her face and left the frame of the video.
Gideon also followed suit once his dad began dancing. “It’s too cheesy,” Harper was heard saying off-camera.
Despite his kids' less-than-enthusiastic response, fans in his comment section were quick to show their support for the video.
“NPH is in his cringy dad era and I’m here for it 😂😂,” one person quipped. “My favorite is when celebrities, no matter how legendary, are still just dad to their kids,” another added.
Even though they may not have loved his TikTok video, Gideon and Harper have previously told their parents that they're considered cool.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE this week, Harris and his celebrity chef husband, 48, discussed how they rank out of the other parents in their children’s friend group.
Abigail Nilsson/Disney
"We're definitely told we're the coolest parents out of all the friend groups," Burtka proudly shared. "I didn't realize it was a competition!" Harris said with a laugh.
"You hope as kids get older that they want to share more with you, and are willing to tell you when things are happening as opposed to just keeping you out of the loop. So that's nice to hear,” Harris said.
The couple also admitted that Harper and Gideon have a pretty “rigorous” school life, so their family home has not become “a hangout house yet.”
In fact, the kids typically “come home and do homework.”
Neil Patrick Harris/ Instagram
Before Harris announced he was joining TikTok, the Uncoupled actor recently had a bit of family fun on Instagram for the holidays .
"Did I push it? I push the red one? Okay. To everyone on the gram of Insta, we just wanted to say happy Christmas eve. From the Burtka-Harris household," Harris said in a December Instagram video before they opened Christmas gifts.

Purposeful usage of Achieve is effective.
Students using more of their courses’ assignments and having higher grades on those assignments, had higher exam scores. Students with higher grades on their assignments (gradebook average) could expect to be 8 points higher on exams. Students that use or engage with less than the median student in each course can expect to perform 4% to 12% lower on their exams (depending on how much less work the student did), while students that use more than the typical, perform 1.5% to 3% higher on their exams.
Moving from -1 to +1 in assignment grade equates to a 8% difference in course exam score as percent correct. The 8% difference in exam scores represents the unique contribution from assignment grade.
88% of students said Achieve was easy to use.
82% of students agreed that Achieve helped them develop, practice, and apply skills associated with their course.
80% of instructors agree that Achieve helped students improve their knowledge of the course material.

Here’s what instructors and students are saying about Achieve.
I found Achieve was readily accessible and was not complicated to pick up or to use anywhere, any time.”
Being able to go over something as many times as you would like till it is ironed into your brain is nice. I like being able to coincide assignments with exams to make sure I understand the content.”
“ As I continue to progress in my position, there are more responsibilities outside of the classroom that require more of my time. Having Achieve relieves some stress for this course as I know it takes less time for me to prepare things on my own.”
Ryan Elsenpeter
“ For some reason, these students worked together far more than is common. Like a lot more. They have long meetings in the library several times a week, and a significant portion of the class goes. It is, in one word, amazing.”
William Griffiths
“ The pre-lecture activities helped the students to participate more in the class.”
