How to use a PS3 controller on PC

A guide for using the DualShock 3 wired and Bluetooth, from Windows 7 to Windows 11.

  • Windows 10/11 setup
  • Windows 7/8 setup

The PlayStation 3's controller, the Dualshock 3, was never meant to be used on the PC, which means it isn't exactly the easiest pad to plug in and start playing with. But are we gonna let that stop us? Obviously not.

The PS3 controller is still special, and there's a very specific reason to use it on PC, especially if you emulate PS2 or PS3 games. The Dualshock 3 has something the best PC controllers don't have: Pressure-sensitive analog face buttons. That makes the Dualshock 3 the best choice for playing games in the PCSX2 or RPCS3 emulators. Metal Gear Solid 3, for example, just doesn't play right without those analog buttons, a feature they had to modify for the PC port.

Longtime PlayStation gamers may also just prefer the feel of Sony's older controllers over the Dualshock 4 or Dualsense, which changed up the analog sticks and shape. Here's the best way to get your PS3 controller working on PC. On Windows 10 or 11, there's thankfully a very convenient tool that makes the DualShock 3 much easier to configure than it used to be.

Note: Steam actually has native support for the DualShock 3, meaning you can simply plug the controller in and set it up through the Big Picture mode Controller settings menu. However, Steam does not support the DualShock 3's gyro controls or (more importantly!) its analog face buttons, which are what we're really after. Follow this guide to get the PS3 controller working on PC with those buttons working, too.

Windows 10/11 DualShock 3 setup

What you need.

  • Dualshock 3 and mini-USB cable
  • Optional: Bluetooth dongle
  • BthPS3 (optional, for Bluetooth)

As noted in the intro, keep in mind that Steam has built-in support for the DualShock 3 controller. If you plug the controller in with Steam running, you can then go to Settings > Controller > Desktop Configuration to customize your controls as you see fit. And if you want to play non-Steam games with the controller, you can add them to Steam with the "Games > Add a non-Steam game to my library" menu.

But presumably you're here because you want to get those analog face buttons working. For years the go-to solution was ScpToolkit, a free, open source tool that did the job but was a bit of a beast to setup. The developer of ScpToolkit sunset the project in 2016, but has since followed it up with the new DsHidMini , a DualShock 3 controller driver specifically built for Windows 10 and 11.

Here's how to get setup with it.

Note: If you've previously installed ScpToolkit on your system or ever used Sony's PSNow streaming service, you may have some leftover files that will interfere with DsHidMini. Check this troubleshooting guide for help on removing those files before you begin the installation process.

DsHidMini setup guide

To get started, do not plug your DualShock 3 in yet . We need it unplugged for the moment.

If you want Bluetooth support for your DualShock 3, first download and install BthPS3Setup_x64.msi from the project's Github here .

Now download DsHidMini .zip from the project's Github here.

DsHidMini's walkthrough recommends having Windows User Account Control enabled for the installation process. This is the warning that pops up when you're installing new software. Normally I have this turned off on my PC, but it's easy to enable for this install process. Press the Windows key and type "UAC" to bring up the User Account Control Settings menu. Move the slider all the way up to "Always notify" and click OK.

Follow the rest of the installation instructions from DsHidMini's developer here .

There are only a few steps, so I'll bullet point them here to make sure you don't miss any:

  • Extract the .zip file and open the x64 folder
  • Right-click the dshidmi.inf file and hit "Install" from the context menu
  • Right-click on igfilter.inf and hit "Install" from the context menu
  • Connect the controller via USB
  • Right-click and run DSHMC.exe as Administrator

If you run into any issues, follow the troubleshooting guide here .

How to use the DualShock 3's pressure-sensitive buttons in PCSX2 or RPCS3

Now for the most important step: getting those sweet analog buttons working.

In the DsHidMini Control software, make sure your controller is set to SDF mode (Single Device with Force Feedback). "The advantage of this mode is a 100% compatibility with all unmodified versions of PCSX2 with the LilyPad gamepad plugin (shipped by default)," writes developer Nefarius.

If you're planning to use your DualShock 3 with Steam or the RPCS3 emulator, use SXS mode .

In the emulators, select the DualShock 3 gamepad as your input and bind the buttons if necessary. In games that support pressure sensitivity, they should now work as they would on a real console.

How to use the DualShock 3 via Bluetooth

Good news: This part should be a cinch. Once you've followed the installation instructions for DsHidMini above, your PS3 controller should be working fine via a wired USB connection. And pairing it via USB should automatically pair it via Bluetooth, too!

If you unplug the DualShock 3 and it doesn't work, check out the Bluetooth troubleshooting section of the walkthrough, and make sure your version of Bluetooth is supported .

Windows 7/8 DualShock 3 setup

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 runtime
  • Microsoft DirectX runtime
  • Xbox 360 controller driver (only needs to be installed on Windows 7)
  • ScpToolkit

ScPToolkit installation guide

1. Download the software linked above, and start by installing the four Microsoft packages. If you're on a Windows 7 PC, you'll also need to install the Xbox 360 controller driver. On Windows 8, it's already built in!

2. Important step: plug your Dualshock 3 into your PC with a mini-USB cable. Now we can start making it work.

Bluetooth installation note: if you also want to be able to use the controller wirelessly, make sure you have a Bluetooth dongle plugged in or your motherboard's Bluetooth enabled. ScpToolkit notes you need a Bluetooth 2.0 or higher dongle that supports Enhanced Data Rate (EDR).

3. Download ScpToolkit and run the installer. After accepting the terms and choosing your install location, you'll get a menu of all the options to install, as in the screenshot above. I recommend leaving this to the default. Click Install to begin the installation.

Bluetooth installation note: Make sure the ScpToolkit Bluetooth Pair Utility option is ticked.

4. After about 30 seconds, ScpToolkit will be installed, and you'll see this screen, with a big green button that says Run Driver Installer. Since this is a fresh install, that's what we want to do. Click the button.

5. This screen may look intimidating, but it's still pretty simple! Check the boxes for the drivers you want to install. In this case, we want to make sure Install Dualshock 3 driver is checked (it should be by default). Now click the arrow next to "Choose Dualshock 3 controllers to install" to see a dropdown list of USB devices attached to your computer. Find the PlayStation 3 controller in the list and check it.

Bluetooth installation note: Make sure the "Install Bluetooth driver" box is checked. Like you did with the Dualshock 3, click the arrow next to "Choose Bluetooth dongles to install" and find your Bluetooth device in the list. Check it.

Note: If you're on Windows Vista, check the box for "Force Driver Installation." Otherwise, leave it unchecked . Click Install.

6. Watch the SCP Toolkit run through its installation process. You'll see lots of pop-ups on the side of your screen as it detects your hardware. Scroll to the bottom of the log and you should hopefully see "Dualshock 3 USB Driver installed" (and "Bluetooth Driver installed" if you chose to), signifying a successful installation. If all went well, click Exit.

7. Now that it's installed, you'll see ScpToolkit as an icon in your system tray. Look in your Start Menu for ScpToolkit Settings Manager. Here you can change some settings like disabling rumble, adjusting analog stick deadzones, and more. Most of these settings you should be able to leave alone.

ScpToolkit starts up with Windows by default, and also plays some sound effects that you might find obnoxious. To disable them, click the Sound settings tab and uncheck "Enable notification sounds."

PCSX2 emulator note: The PCSX2 settings tab allows you to patch the emulator's LilyPad controller plugin to support the pressure sensitive buttons. If you plan to use your PS3 controller with the emulator, click Browse to navigate to your PCSX2 installation folder, then click Enable to install the patch. Voila!

Using your Playstation 3 controller on PC

Now that it's installed, the Dualshock 3 should behave like an Xbox 360 controller. Any game with native XInput support—pretty much any modern PC game that supports gamepads—should recognize it without a hitch. Unfortunately, this means that it won't register as a PlayStation controller to the few games that have native DualShock 4 support, so you won't get the correct Square/Cross/Triangle/Circle button icons by default.

Some games let you manually choose your button icons, though. Look for that in game settings!

If you ran into issues installing ScpToolkit or using the controller, you can try posting in the official thread at the PCSX2 forums , but you may not get an answer.

How to connect your PS3 controller via Bluetooth in Windows 7/8

How to use a: - PS5 controller on PC - PS4 controller on PC - Nintendo Switch Pro controller on PC - Xbox controller on PC

If you're not about that wired business, and followed all the Bluetooth installation steps above, you should be able to simply unplug the controller, and after a couple seconds it will sync via Bluetooth. You'll get a notification in the system tray when it does. Cool!

This works after a reboot, too. If you allow ScpToolkit to start with Windows, you should simply be able to plug in your PS3 controller again and it'll instantly be recognized. Once the LED is on, unplug the controller, and it'll once again be synced via Bluetooth.

If you have issues with Bluetooth, it could be that your dongle isn't supported. You may also find help in ScpToolkit's Github discussions . Bluetooth can be finicky, and any problem you run into could be due to hardware, or your particular version of Windows, or drivers… in other words, good luck.

How to Make a PS3 Controller Discoverable to a Bluetooth Enabled Computer

...

The PlayStation 3's SIXAXIS controller connects to the system by using a Bluetooth network. With this, it serves as a remote control and a controller for games such as "Uncharted." It only makes sense that given the controller's Bluetooth sensitivity, it would work with other Bluetooth devices, such as a computer. In fact, it does, although it loses the motion-control ability when hooked up to a computer.

Download the drivers necessary to connect the PlayStation 3 controller. These drivers are the Libusb32 drivers, BtSix 1.5c and PPJoy 0.83. Links to all these drivers are available in the Resources section.

Video of the Day

Install Libusb32. These drivers ready the USB port for your controller. This file is an executable file, so simply double-click on it to open. When open, click "Next" to install it.

Install BtSix 1.5c. These drivers ready the Bluetooth device on your computer to accept PS3 controller. Extract the BtSix 1.5c .zip file. Place it somewhere easy to find, such as the desktop. Go to the Device Manager. The easiest way to find this is by simply searching for it under the Start menu. Choose the Bluetooth device, and right-click to choose the option "Update Driver Software." Now, select "Browse My Computer for Driver Software" then select "Let Me Pick from a List." Here, you select "Have Disk" and pick out the BtSix 1.5c file that you previously extracted. Press "OK" to install.

Install PPJoy. This also is a .zip file which you need to extract. After that, you can click on the .exe in it to install it. Start "Configure Joysticks" in the program to set the buttons on the controller to whatever you like.

Connect the PlayStation 3 controller to the computer using the mini-USB cord that came with the controller and is used to charge it. Open BtSix 1.5c and select "Address."

Make the controller recognizable to the Bluetooth. Unplug the controller from the computer. Press and hold the PS3 Home button on the center of the controller. This turns on the controller, and it is recognized on the computer.

This wikiHow teaches you how to connect a PS3 controller to a Windows PC with the help of the SCP toolkit program.

Step 1 Turn on your controller and connect it to your PC.

  • To turn your controller on, press the stylized "PS" button in the middle of your controller.
  • USB port locations vary depending on the type of computer you're using. If you can't locate the USB ports, check the sides or the back of your computer's CPU (desktop) or the back of the casing (laptop).
  • If you're connecting your controller via wireless dongle, you may need to first install the dongle's drivers. Make sure you follow the on-screen prompts to do so after plugging in the dongle.
  • If your PS3 controller is paired with your PS3, first unplug the PS3 from its power source.

Step 2 Navigate to the...

  • Make sure you're downloading the most recent version of the software. If you're on an out-of-date version's page, you won't see the green "Latest Release" sticker on the left side of the page.

Step 4 Double-click the toolkit setup file.

  • Click the checkbox next to "I agree to the License terms and conditions".
  • Click Next .
  • Click Install .
  • click Yes if prompted.

Step 6 Double-click the ScpToolkit Driver Installer program.

  • Also uncheck the box next to "Bluetooth" if your controllers are wired (e.g., you aren't using a dongle).
  • A good rule of thumb here is to uncheck a box next to anything you aren't using.
  • If you're using Windows Vista, you'll need to check the box next to "Force Driver Installation" in the middle-left side of the window.

Step 8 Click the box under

  • If you're using a non-wired controller, you'll need to select the USB device you're using to facilitate the connection under the "Bluetooth" section above the "DualShock 3 Controllers" drop-down box.

Step 10 Click Install.

  • Once the installation is complete, you'll hear a confirmation noise.
  • At this point, your controller's drivers have been installed and you are ready to begin using your controller with PC games.

  • This process will also work for a PS4 controller, though you'll need to first unpair the controller from within your PS4's Settings. You'll also need to install DualShock 4 drivers and select a DualShock 4 controller instead of a DualShock 3. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
  • If you run into any errors, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the SCP toolkit. When you reinstall, make sure you install any prerequisites (regardless of whether or not you think you need them) and check the "Force Driver Installation" box when installing the drivers regardless of your operating system. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 1
  • When you open the "Devices" manager on your PC (accessed by typing "joy.cpl" into the "Run" application), your PS3 controller will show up as an Xbox 360 controller. This is because the Xbox 360 controller is natively supported by Windows, while the PS3 controller is not. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Have you wondered if you could connect controllers to computers or phones? You’ll be glad to hear that the answer is a resounding yes. As long as you have the right connection methods, you can connect a PS3 controller to your devices.

How to Connect a PS3 Controller to a PC or Phone

If you’re curious and want to learn how to connect a PS3 controller to a PC or phone, you’re in luck. You can find the many methods for both platforms and their different versions here. We’ll also answer some of your burning questions.

How to Connect a PS3 Controller to a PC

There are two ways you can prepare your PC to accept a PS3 controller. You’ll need a Bluetooth or wired connection, but a wire is still always necessary.

Both methods will require you to download ScpToolkit.

Getting ScpToolkit

Before you can use a PS3 controller on your PC, you’ll need to download the following software:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package
  • Microsoft .NET Framework Version 4.5
  • Microsoft DirectX End-User runtime
  • Xbox 360 controller driver (Windows 7 only, others not needed)

First, you need to install the first four packages if you haven’t already. Next, you’ll start installing ScpToolkit.

These are the steps for installing ScpToolkit:

change ps3 controller bluetooth

  • After the installation process, click the large green button called “Run Driver Installer” to go on.

change ps3 controller bluetooth

  • For Bluetooth connections, you can choose to install Bluetooth drivers if you wish.

change ps3 controller bluetooth

  • Wait for the installation process to end.
  • After this, ScpToolkit will launch on startup in the future.

These steps assume that you’re connecting any PS3 controller to your PC. This makes things easier, but in the future, you can connect your controller to your PC via Bluetooth.

Connecting via Bluetooth

After you follow the steps above, you can unplug your controller. It should take only a few seconds for the controller to sync up with your PC via Bluetooth. If your computer doesn’t have native Bluetooth functionality, you need to purchase a Bluetooth dongle.

Many laptops already have Bluetooth capabilities built-in, so you probably don’t need one. Even so, some dongles offer a better connection than the stock laptop Bluetooth function your laptop has.

Since ScpToolkit launches on startup, the next time you turn your PC on, you can plug your controller in again and unplug it. Unfortunately, you’ll need to have a USB cable handy, but after the initial unplugging step, you can use the PS3 controller wirelessly.

How to Connect a PS3 Controller to a Mac

Connecting a PS3 controller to a Mac is quite simple. There’s no need to install anything. However, depending on your OS X version, the steps can differ.

OS X 10.9 and Above

The process for connecting your controller to OS X 10.9 and above goes like this:

  • Disconnect your controller from your PS3 if needed.
  • On your Mac, open the menu and select “System Preferences.”
  • Click the “Bluetooth” option.
  • Connect the PS3 controller to your Mac via USB cable.
  • Press and hold the PlayStation button on your controller.
  • Your controller should connect within moments.
  • At this point, you can unplug the cable.
  • Play your games with the PS3 controller.

You can keep the cable connected for charging purposes, but otherwise, you can disconnect it.

Pre-OS X 10.9

These are the steps for Pre-OS X 10.9 Macs:

  • Unplug the USB cable.
  • Click the “+” button in the bottom-left corner of the Bluetooth devices menu.
  • Type “0000” without the parentheses into the pairing code window.
  • Select “Accept” or “Pair” depending on the OS X version.
  • Click the PS3 controller’s name in the Bluetooth devices window.
  • Click the Gear icon below.
  • Check both “Add to Favorites” and “Update Services” options.
  • You can now start playing games with the PS3 controller.

Older versions of OS X will require this more complicated process.

How to Connect a PS3 Controller to an Android Device

Sixaxis enabler.

You can connect any PS3 controller to an Android device by using Sixaxis Enabler. This app doesn’t require rooting your Android phone, so you can keep its warranty and avoid the risk of bricking it. Here’s how you’ll do it:

  • Purchase and install Sixaxis Enabler from the Google Play Store.
  • Launch Sixaxis Enabler.
  • Connect the PS3 controller to your phone with an OTG cable.
  • Press and hold the PlayStation button.
  • Allow the app to access the controller.
  • When your phone displays “Sixaxis Enabled”, you can try using the controller.
  • It should work with your games now.

Not all phones are compatible with Sixaxis Enabler, so you’ll have to test yours and see if the controller works.

How to Connect a PS3 Controller to an iPhone

You can connect a PS3 controller to your iPhone, but this requires jailbreaking to work. Here’s how:

  • Download SixaxisPairTool and launch it.
  • Connect both your iPhone and the PS3 controller to your computer via two separate cables.
  • Get your iPhone’s Bluetooth address and enter it into SixaxisPairTool.
  • Select “Update.”
  • Download and install Blutrol.
  • Launch Blutrol.
  • Select the “Controller” tab.
  • Choose the PS3 controller.
  • At this point, you can detach the PS3 controller from your PC.
  • To configure the controller for your games, take a screenshot of the game where the on-screen controls are displayed.
  • Go back to Blutrol and open the “Games” tab.
  • Select the “+” sign.
  • Select the screenshot from earlier and choose either the portrait or landscape mode, depending on how you took it.
  • Select “Add” and choose the PS3 controller you wish, and select either portrait or landscape as before.
  • Drag and adjust the PS3 buttons onscreen until they match with the original controls.
  • Select “Done” when you’re finished.
  • Play the game.

You can use Blutrol for more than just games too. Simply adjust the controls to something you’re comfortable with. Perhaps you can dream up some interesting ways to use your favorite apps.

How Are You Playing so Well?

Now that you know how to connect a PS3 controller to a PC or phone, you can start dominating in games. Your friends will wonder why you move so smoothly, especially on mobile. The process might take some time, so you need to be patient.

Do you believe the methods of connecting a PS3 controller are complicated? What’s your preferred controller for games? Let us know in the comments section below.

This article explains how to troubleshoot connection problems with PS3 wireless controllers.

Controllers made for other Sony systems, such as the PS2 and PS4, cannot be used with the PS3 without the assistance of an adapter. Make sure the controller you're using is compatible with your console.

Why Won't My PS3 Controller Connect?

There are two official variations of the wireless PS3 controller: the Dualshock 3 and the older, discontinued Sixaxis.

Both versions can be connected directly to the console via a micro USB cable, and both include Bluetooth capabilities that enable wireless play. Each controller also has an internal battery that charges when connected to the PS3. The only major difference between them is the Dualshock 3 features vibration capability.

Additionally, there are dozens of PS3-compatible controllers made by third-party manufacturers. Some unofficial PS3 controllers only work when plugged directly into the console, and some come with a Bluetooth adapter you must plug into the console to play wirelessly. Nonetheless, they all rely on the same underlying technology, so they are prone to the same problems. PS3 controller connection issues can be caused by:

  • Syncing errors between the controller and the PS3 console.
  • Problems with the controller's battery.
  • Issues with the controller's internal hardware.

For the vibration feature to work, it must be enabled, and the game you're playing must support vibration/rumble.

What to Do When Your PS3 Controller Won't Connect

Before you start disassembling your PS3 controller, here are some steps you can take to identify the source of your connection problems:

Turn off your PS3 console. Then, turn it back on to see if that fixes the issue.

Connect your controller to another PS3, or connect a different PS3 controller to your PS3 to make sure the problem isn't with the console itself.

Check the USB connection. Make sure the USB cable connecting your controller to the console works.

Remove any other USB devices you have plugged into your PS3 while trying to sync your controller.

Move closer to the console. If using a wireless controller, make sure the controller's battery is charged and is within 30 feet of the console.

Unpair other Bluetooth devices. When trying to sync a wireless controller, make sure you don't have more than six other Bluetooth peripherals already paired with your console.

Reset your PS3 controller. If your controller works while plugged in, yet you can't play wirelessly, you can try resetting the controller:

  • Turn off your PS3 console.
  • Plug the controller into the USB port on the console.
  • Turn on your PS3.
  • Look for a small hole on the back on the controller near the L2 shoulder button. Use an unfolded paper clip to push down the tiny reset button inside the hole.
  • Press the PS button on the controller to re-pair it with the PS3.

Replace the battery. If the controller won't turn on at all, the problem likely lies with the battery or the internal hardware. First, try removing the battery and re-inserting it:

  • Use an eyeglass repair kit to unscrew the back of the PS3 controller.
  • Look for a single small watch battery. In official Sony PS3 controllers, it's located near the upper-left side of the motherboard.
  • Gently remove the battery and set it aside for 30 seconds.
  • Re-insert the battery and try turning on the controller again.

Wikipedia says that PS3 controllers were no longer produced after 2008, so if you have one at home, it's far from new. Back to reality, you need to do something before you use PS3 controller on PC. Rickety sticks? Increase the deadzone to avoid unwanted actions. Triggers are too sensitive? Adjust the deadzone to be stealth-y, no accidents allowed. Change the Stick response: pick one of the existing profiles, or create your own custom curve. Invert the X and Y axes, swap sticks… In other words, the world is your oyster!

Add more than a 1000 button assignments to PS3 controller on PC

In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of connecting a wireless controller to your PS3, ensuring that you can focus on your gaming skills and immerse yourself in the virtual world. Let’s get started and unleash the true potential of your gaming experience!

Inside This Article

Step 1: power on the ps3 console, step 2: turn on the wireless controller, step 3: press the ps3 button on the controller, step 4: sync the controller with the ps3, step 5: confirm successful connection, troubleshooting tips.

Before you can connect a wireless controller to a PS3, you need to ensure that the console is powered on. This step is crucial as the controller requires the console to be in an active state for a successful connection. Here’s how you can power on your PS3:

  • Make sure that the console is plugged into a power source and the power cable is securely connected.
  • Locate the power button on the front of the PS3 console. It is typically a circular symbol with a line through it.
  • Press and hold the power button until you hear a series of beeps or see the PlayStation logo appear on your TV screen.
  • Release the power button once the console has successfully powered on.

It is important to note that if your PS3 is already powered on, you can skip this step and proceed to the next one. However, if you are unsure whether your console is turned on or not, it is always a good practice to begin by powering it on before attempting to connect the wireless controller.

Now that your PS3 console is powered on, you are ready to move on to the next step of connecting your wireless controller.

Once you have powered on the PS3 console, it’s time to turn on the wireless controller. The controller is an essential component for playing games on your PS3, so ensuring it is properly connected and powered on is crucial. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Locate the power button on the wireless controller. It is usually located on the front face of the controller, near the top.

2. Press and hold down the power button for a few seconds until the controller’s LED lights up. The LED indicator is typically located near the power button.

3. Once the LED lights up, you will see the controller enter into the pairing mode. This is indicated by the LED blinking rapidly.

4. It’s important to note that some wireless controllers may have a separate sync button instead of a power button. In such cases, you will need to press and hold the sync button to turn on the controller and put it into pairing mode.

5. Congratulations! You have successfully turned on the wireless controller for your PS3.

Remember, it’s essential to ensure that the controller has sufficient battery power. If the LED doesn’t light up or the controller doesn’t respond, it may indicate that the batteries are low or need to be replaced. Make sure to replace the batteries or charge the controller before proceeding.

Turning on the wireless controller is a straightforward process, but it is a crucial step in connecting it to your PS3. Now that you have turned on the controller, you are one step closer to an immersive gaming experience on your console. Let’s move on to the next step to complete the connection process.

Once you have powered on the PS3 console and turned on the wireless controller, you are now ready to proceed to step 3. This step involves pressing the PS3 button on the controller to initiate the connection process.

The PS3 button is located in the center of the controller, between the analog thumbsticks. It is marked with the PlayStation logo, making it easily recognizable. Pressing this button will activate the Bluetooth function on the controller and send out a signal for the PS3 console to detect.

When you press the PS3 button, you may notice the LED light on the front of the controller start to flash. This indicates that the controller is in pairing mode and actively searching for a compatible device to connect to.

It is important to note that if you press and hold the PS3 button for too long, the controller will turn off instead of entering pairing mode. Therefore, a brief press is all that is needed to trigger the connection process.

After pressing the PS3 button, both the console and controller will work together to establish a stable connection. This process may take a few seconds, during which the LED light on the controller will stop flashing and eventually become steady, indicating a successful connection.

By pressing the PS3 button on the controller, you are essentially signaling to the console that you want to pair the two devices together for seamless gameplay. Once the connection is established, you will be able to utilize the wireless controller to navigate through menus, play games, and enjoy the full functionality of the PS3 console.

Now that you have completed step 3, you can move on to step 4, which involves syncing the controller with the PS3 console.

Once you have turned on the wireless controller and powered on the PS3 console, it’s time to sync the controller with the console. Follow these simple steps:

  • Locate the small “sync” button on the front of the PS3 console. It is typically located next to the disc slot.
  • Press and hold the “sync” button on the console until the LED lights start flashing rapidly.
  • Now, on the wireless controller, locate the small “sync” button as well. It is usually located on the back of the controller, near the L2 button.
  • Press and hold the “sync” button on the controller until the LED lights start flashing rapidly.
  • Release both “sync” buttons and give them a moment to establish a connection.

During the syncing process, the LED lights on both the console and the controller will flash rapidly. This indicates that they are actively searching for each other.

Once the syncing is complete, the LED lights on both the console and the controller will stop flashing and remain solid. This means the controller is now successfully synced with the PS3 console.

It’s important to note that each time you power on the PS3 console, you will need to sync the controller again, as they do not remain permanently synced.

If you ever need to sync additional controllers with the PS3, simply repeat the steps mentioned earlier for each controller.

Once you have followed the previous steps to power on your PS3 console, turn on your wireless controller, and sync the two devices together, it’s time to confirm if the connection was successful. Follow these steps to ensure that your controller is properly connected to your PS3:

1. Look at the light indicators on your wireless controller. There should be a solid LED light indicating that the controller is connected. If the light is blinking rapidly or not present at all, it may mean that the connection was not established correctly.

2. Test the buttons on your controller. Press several buttons to see if they respond on the PS3’s interface. For example, try pressing the directional pad, the face buttons, and the shoulder buttons to check if they are working properly. If the buttons are responsive, it is a clear indication that your controller has successfully connected to the PS3.

3. Check if the controller is being recognized by the PS3. Navigate to the “Settings” menu on your PS3 and select “Accessory Settings.” From there, choose “Manage Bluetooth Devices” and look for the wireless controller in the list of devices. If the controller is listed and recognized by the PS3, it means that the connection has been established correctly.

4. Test the controller’s functionality within a game or application. Launch a game or application on your PS3 that requires a controller. Play the game and see if the controller responds accurately to your inputs. If the controller’s buttons, analog sticks, and other features work properly within the game or application, then you can be confident that the connection is successful.

By following these steps, you will be able to confirm whether your wireless controller has successfully connected to your PS3 console. Enjoy your gaming experience with the newfound freedom of wireless gameplay!

If you encounter any issues when connecting your wireless controller to your PS3, don’t worry! Here are some troubleshooting tips to help you resolve any problems:

1. Check the battery: Ensure that your wireless controller has enough battery power. If the battery is low, try replacing it with fresh batteries or connect the controller to the PS3 using a USB cable.

2. Reboot the PS3 console: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix connectivity issues. Turn off the PS3 console and power it back on after a few seconds. Then follow the steps to connect the wireless controller.

3. Reset the controller: If the controller is not responding or syncing with the PS3, you can try resetting it. Look for the small reset button located at the back of the controller. Use a small pin or paperclip to press and hold the reset button for a few seconds. Afterward, try connecting the controller again.

4. Check for interference: Wireless signals can sometimes be disrupted by other electronic devices or objects. Make sure there are no devices such as wireless routers or microwaves near the PS3 console or wireless controller. Additionally, try connecting the controller in a different area of the room to see if that helps establish a stable connection.

5. Update firmware: Ensure that your PS3 console has the latest system software updates installed. These updates often include improvements for controller connectivity and performance. Go to the PlayStation Network section on the console’s main menu and select “System Update” to check for any available updates.

6. Re-sync the controller: If the connection between the controller and the PS3 gets disrupted, you may need to re-sync them. Connect the controller to the console using a USB cable and press the PS3 button while the console is on. This should re-establish the connection.

7. Test with a different controller: If you have access to another wireless controller, try connecting it to your PS3. If the second controller works fine, there may be an issue with the original controller that needs to be resolved or replaced.

8. Contact customer support: If you’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps and are still unable to connect your wireless controller to the PS3, it may be helpful to reach out to the manufacturer’s customer support. They can provide further assistance and suggest any specific solutions for your particular situation.

Remember, troubleshooting steps may vary depending on the specific wireless controller model and PS3 console version you are using. But by following these general tips, you should be able to overcome most common connectivity issues and enjoy gaming on your PS3 with the wireless controller of your choice!

In conclusion, connecting a wireless controller to a PS3 is a straightforward process that allows gamers to enjoy a more immersive and convenient gaming experience. How to Connect a PS3 Controller to Your Android Phone or Tablet

Looking to connect a PS3 controller to your Android device? Here are two methods for using PS3 controllers with your phone.

Mobile games are becoming more advanced all the time, so it's no wonder that a lot of people are interested in pairing controllers with their devices. One popular option is the PlayStation 3 (PS3) controller.

But doing this is not a matter of plug-and-play. In fact, there is setup and some legwork involved in making sure your pairing dreams come true.

Here are two ways to pair your PS3 controller with your Android phone or tablet, along with their compatibility limitations and other requirements.

Using a PS3 Controller With Your Android Phone

You might choose to pair a PS3 controller with your Android phone because you have a spare one lying around. But because the PS3 controller comes from an older generation of hardware, it has some limitations.

While PS3 controllers do have Bluetooth functionality, they don't seamlessly connect to other hardware like newer controllers. Both the original Sixaxis and DualShock 3 versions of the PS3 controller are specifically meant to connect to either the PS3 or the PSP Go. Connecting to other devices takes some setup and requires workarounds.

The DualShock 4, which has a wider range of Bluetooth compatibility, is only available with the PlayStation 4 console. This is why you will need to use software and cables to connect your PS3 controller to your Android smartphone or tablet.

Method 1: Use Sixaxis Controller (Root Required)

Compatibility: Most Android devices, but issues with HTC and Samsung

Difficulty level: Moderate

What you need: Rooted phone, USB On-The-Go (OTG) adapter, PS3 controller, PC, and a mini-USB cable

laptop, ps3 controller, and Android phone

Sixaxis Controller is the go-to app for those looking to pair their PS3 controller and Android mobile device. In terms of pairing apps, it has the widest range of compatible devices.

However, the app requires root access. This may be a deterrent for some users, since rooting Android voids your device's warranty. If you're not careful, you could also brick your phone or make it vulnerable to security threats. Luckily, there is a variety of software to help you safely root.

If your device has a locked bootloader (such as HTC devices), you will first need to go through the process of unlocking your bootloader before you can root your phone. Once you've done this, you can get started with Sixaxis Controller.

Download: Sixaxis Controller ($2.49) [No Longer Available]

Step 1: Check Compatibility

Since Sixaxis Controller is a paid app, it's recommended that you use the free Sixaxis Compatibility Checker app first to make sure it will work on your phone. In the compatibility checker, you simply need to press Start to check whether your phone is compatible.

The app will also state whether your phone is rooted or not. If your phone is not rooted, it can't perform the check and the Sixaxis Controller app will not work on your phone.

sixaxis compatibility checker Android phone

If you've rooted your phone, the app will do a compatibility check. You will know whether your phone is compatible if the app is able to provide your phone's Bluetooth address. It also shows a dialog box that confirms compatibility.

sixaxis compatibility success

Keep this Bluetooth address on hand (you will need it later) and proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Getting the Controller Ready

Besides rooting your phone, extra setup is required for your controller too. You need to make your PS3 controller compatible with the Sixaxis app by preparing it using a PC tool. The option suggested by the app's developers is SixaxisPairTool .

Install this tool onto your PC and run it as an administrator. There is a Windows version, as well as a macOS and Linux controller pairing tool. We will cover the Windows tool.

The simple program provides you with a small dialog box stating the Bluetooth address of your controller's master device. It also has a space that allows you to change the master device. Type your phone's Bluetooth address (as provided by the compatibility checker) in this box and continue. The program will then install the correct drivers needed for your controller.

sixaxis pair tool

You may run into issues with this portion of the pairing process. Sometimes SixaxisPairTool does not run, with an error saying that libusb0.dll is missing.

sixaxis pair tool windows error

One workaround for this is to go into the folder where you installed SixaxisPairTool and enter the x86 directory. Here, rename libusb0_x86.dll to ibusb0.dll . Then copy this file, along with libusb0.sys , to the same folder where SixaxisPairTool.exe resides.

You should also access the Device Manager (right-click the Start Button) and uninstall the device named HID compliant game controller under Human Interface Devices . If you can get the program to run, but can't install the drivers, you can use SCP Toolkit as an alternative driver installer.

Next, move onto the mobile app portion of the pairing process.

Step 3: Pair Controller Through Sixaxis Controller App

sixaxis app phone and controller

You'll be glad that this step is relatively easier then prior ones. Make sure the app has superuser permissions on your phone before you start.

At this point, it's as easy as pressing the Start button in the Sixaxis Controller app. The app will then do a series of checks to make sure you have the correct drivers.

By pressing the Pair Controller button, you'll be able to check that your phone's Bluetooth address is now the controller's master address. If you were unable to properly pair the controller with SixaxisPairTool, the Pair Controller function will do this for you---as long as you have the correct drivers installed.

When the dialog in the app says Client 1 connected , the connection is successful. You can check to make sure everything is working by pressing buttons and moving the sticks around---the app should respond by moving its selections according to your buttons.

Now, just start up a game that allows gamepad input and have fun!

Method 2: Use Sixaxis Enabler (No Root Required)

Compatibility: Most Samsung Galaxy phones, but certain other Android devices---especially newer models.

Difficulty level: Easy

What you need: Compatible Android phone, USB On-The-Go (OTG) adapter, PS3 controller, mini-USB cable

Android phone and ps3 controller

Using the Sixaxis Enabler app to connect your PS3 controller to your Android device is certainly the easiest method. So why don't more people promote it?

Its extremely limited compatibility, especially with older devices, makes this method only usable with certain phones. Since the app doesn't require rooting your device, your phone or tablet must already have the correct firmware support for PS3 controllers. The brands which most commonly work with the app include Samsung Galaxy and Nexus phones. Some LG flagships are also compatible.

Like Sixaxis Controller, Sixaxis Enabler is also a paid app. So if you're one of the lucky people who has a device that works with the app, what do you need to do?

Download: Sixaxis Enabler ($2.49)

Step 1: Open Sixaxis Enabler

The first step for this method is extremely simple---buy the app, then download and open it. The app doesn't require you to root your device or need any special permissions.

The app itself is also extremely simple, with a minimalistic user interface. This includes a screen with instructions and a troubleshooting page. At the top of the app, you can see its status. When it says Detecting Sixaxis, please attach controller , you should do just that.

Step 2: Allow the App to Pair

sixaxis enabler default screen

Once you've connected your controller and switched it on, you'll receive a prompt asking whether you want to allow the app to access your device. Simply select OK and the app will begin syncing.

If your device is compatible, the status of the app will change to Sixaxis Enabled . You can then move the controller's joysticks and press buttons to make sure that the app registers these movements. If it works properly, lines of input code will appear as you interact with the controller.

If your device is not compatible, rooting will not fix this unless you add a custom ROM that has the proper firmware updates. In our testing, an HTC One M7 worked with Sixaxis Controller while rooted, but was not compatible with Sixaxis Enabler.

However, we've confirmed compatibility with the Samsung Galaxy S8. We were also able to use the app with the Galaxy S10 and Huawei P20 Pro. Once your controller is paired to your device, you can simply open a game and begin using it.

Other Ways to Pair a Controller to Android

Despite the increasing popularity of using controllers for Android games, there are a limited number of ways that you can pair your PS3 controller with your phone. We've outlined the two main methods Android owners can use, so hopefully one of them works for you.

However, newer controllers and dedicated Android controllers have emerged on the market. If you're looking for an easier method, check out our guide on connecting a controller to your Android smartphone or tablet .
