How to make windows 11's task manager "always on top".

You should make your Windows 11 Task Manager always on top. It will help you escape misbehaving apps.

Windows 11's redesigned Task Manager has an always-on-top mode. Enable it, and the Task Manager will start in always-on-top mode every time you launch it in the future. The always-on-top Task Manager should even work in some situations where the standard Task Manager won't appear.

To enable Always on Top Mode, first launch the Task Manager ---you can do so by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc, right-clicking an empty space on the taskbar and selecting "Task Manager," searching "Task Manager" in the Start menu, or pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete and selecting "Task Manager."

Right-click the taskbar and select

Click the gear-shaped "Settings" option at the bottom-left corner of the Task Manager window. (If you don't see it, click the menu button at the top-left corner of the window.)

Click

Activate the "Always on top" checkbox under Window management here. That's it---the Task Manager will be always on top. It will remain always on top every time you launch it until you disable this option.

make task manager always on top

Microsoft's Jen Gentleman notes that the always-on-top mode will help the Task Manager appear in more situations. You can always launch a Task Manager window by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc anywhere in Windows 11. If you have it set to "Always on Top," it will launch in always-on-top mode, and it should appear above other application windows that may be taking up your whole screen. In normal situations, it's possible an app---like a frozen PC game---may take up your entire screen, and the Task Manager may launch behind it.

You can also make the Task Manager always on top on Windows 10 , although the process is a bit different as the Task Manager was redesigned for Windows 11 . You can also make a window always on top on Windows 10 or Windows 11 with Microsoft's Always on Top PowerToy .

How to Turn Task Manager Always on Top on or Off in Windows 10 & 11

How to Always Show Task Manager on Top of Other Open Windows

This is a simple way to keep track of your computer's performance while working.

Keeping the Task Manager on top of other windows while you’re working can be a real timesaver, helping you to stay organized and efficient. So, let's take a look at how to keep the Windows Task Manager “Always On Top" and avoid it from getting lost behind your other opened applications or windows.

1. Through Task Manager Settings

One way to keep the Windows Task Manager always on top is by making adjustments in its settings. This method is quite straightforward, and you can enable this setting with just a few clicks. Here's how:

Right-click on Start and select Task Manager from the menu list. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard, and it will open the Task Manager .

Once the Task Manager window appears, click on More details if it is not already expanded.

How to Keep Task Manager Always-on-Top on Windows

From the left-side panel, select the gear (Settings) icon. You will now see a checkbox labeled Always on top . Check this box and the Task Manager window will stay on top of any other window that you open.

In order to disable it, simply uncheck this box and the Task Manager window will go back to its normal behavior.

2. Using the Task Manager Notification icon

Another way to always show the Windows Task Manager on top of any other open windows is by using its notification icon.

To enable this feature, do the following:

Open the Run dialog box , type taskmgr , and hit Enter. Once you open the Task Manager, go to the bottom right corner of your screen and click on the small upward arrow icon.

Keep Task Manager Always-on-Top Using the Task Manager Notification icon

Look for the Task Manager icon and right-click on it. Select Always on top from the context menu and the Task Manager window will remain on top of all other windows.

To disable it, right-click on the Task Manager icon, and select Always on top again.

This way, you can keep the Windows Task Manager always on top and make sure that it doesn't get lost behind other open windows.

Keep Task Manager Above Other Open Windows

If you use Task Manager frequently, you can keep it always on top of other open windows. That way, you can always keep your eye on your PC's performance and see if anything amiss is going on.

How to make Task Manager on Windows 10 ‘Always on Top’.

If you are using Windows 10 and quite often find that the task manager sometimes gets stuck behind Non-Responding games, apps, programs, etc. This article will show you how to force Task Manager into an always-on-top position. Allowing you to always have quick access to Windows most valuable tool.

make_task_manager_always_on_top

How to Pin the Task Manager to the Taskbar on Windows 10.

Even the freshest, cleanest installation of Windows 10 doesn’t guarantee an entirely stable working environment free of Task Manager intervention. More often than not games, apps, programs, and a range of other tools and clients will go rouge for absolutely no reason. Resulting in the Task Manager being called to action.

Although software can come back from Not Responding given a little time, most people are too impatient to wait for that to happen, especially on slow devices. Unfortunately, when called to action, the Task Manager can get lost or stuck behind frozen applications, which is why there is now a fantastic little option that allows you to force Alway on Top function for the Task Manager.

How do you make the Task Manager on Windows 10 open as Always on Top?

For whatever reason, the Task Manager on Windows 10 hasn’t been set to be always on top by default, so you’ll have to manually enable the feature instead. To begin open the Task Manager using your favourite method. Either Ctrl+Alt+Delete, from the taskbar, start menu, or whatever other way you prefer.

Once you have the Task Manager window open in front of you, click on Options located in the top ribbon menu next to File, then make sure the Always on top option is ticked. This will make sure that the Task Manager opens as the top item on your operating system whenever it is called. Allowing you quick and instant access to End Task should a program, game or app crash during use.

Although this should reduce your need to restart your computer when problems arise, it won’t completely resolve the issue. There’s always a chance you’ll still get stuck pending a restart.

Make any windowed application 'Always On Top' without keyboard shortcut?

I've checked the previous question here , but unfortunately:

  • DeskPin mostly doesn't work since Windows 8, and it still doesn't work in Windows 10
  • PowerMenu hasn't been updated since 2002, and does not seem to work in Windows 10
  • AutoHotKey and AlwaysOnTopMaker requires a keyboard, there is no visual indication that a window is marked as Always on Top or not

I found a program called TurboTop that can do this from system tray, but in Windows 10, TurboTop list all programs that is not even running in its list, twice. It is a mess.

WindowPinner does it better, but it still include not running programs in the list.

Is there any solution that work GUI way without requiring keyboard, like long pressing/right click on title bar and select Always on Top? If you're used to Ubuntu Linux you know this functionality.

Dexpot does that, it enables a "Clever use of title bars":

The title bar as well as the minimize, maximize and close buttons can be assigned with further functions (Role up, Minimize to system tray, etc.).

Always on top is one of the functions. You could, for example, make a right click on the maximize button activate the always on top.

  • 3 Just want to add a better option for this, you can use AquaSnap, it is even easier since you just have to shake the window to make it always on top instead of right clicking/long tap. –  Nur Jun 19, 2016 at 8:14
  • 1 @Nur this is also personal use only and useless if you have to bring your own hardware to work. –  John Dvorak Nov 3, 2016 at 0:42
  • 2 @JanDvorak Take a look at my answer - it's GPL, free to use as you please (shameless plug: I'm the author) –  Joshua Parnell Dec 30, 2016 at 9:08
  • 2 @JoshuaParnell Unless it can insert itself into the window's context menu, I'm sticking with Turbotop, for the reasons outlined in the comments to your answer. –  John Dvorak Dec 30, 2016 at 11:42

Download the AlwaysOnTop installer and install it (choose the latest release). Run the app from Start -> All Programs -> AlwaysOnTop. It sits in the system tray. Click the icon in the tray, click "AlwaysOnTop", and then click the window you want to stay on top (the cursor will be the cross while waiting for the window).

Full disclosure, I am the app author and this was built using .Net (C#). Full source can be found at the link as well.

  • 3 @srgb I wholeheartedly agree. I believe this to be because it is built in AutoIt. I have recently increased its functionality (slightly), but because AutoIt applications' GUI's require a constant while loop to remain active, this can consume CPU as more functions are added. I plan to rewrite this app in C# as I have time. –  Joshua Parnell Dec 23, 2016 at 21:44

This is off the OP's original question, but seems like a good place to share information about 'always on top' utilities, even if it does require a few clicks.

From a programming standpoint, writing a simple utility like this is a very simple exercise. Maybe that's why there are so few solutions out there, or perhaps why there are so many home grown ones.

It's hard for me to trust utilities that are downloaded from somebody's Google Drive or Dropbox account. But I do trust Nir Sofer of Nirsoft . He has a tiny app called WinLister where we can set a window to be always on top. It's not very user friendly if you do it often, but I only occasionally need to pin a window to the top, so it works for me.

  • 1 I like that you reasoned why this simple feature is missing from pro apps but so common in home grown apps. That helps explain why apps for this feature may be hard to find from more reputable software companies and why the apps you do find make you cringe with virus fear. Also, I can confirm that this app suggestion does work with Windows 10 Store apps. –  Thomas Dec 28, 2016 at 3:04

You can use AutoHotkey and make a script with just a single line of code:

Ctrl + Space Will toggle a window to stay on top.

Have a look at the full syntax:

WinSet, AlwaysOnTop , OnOffToggle, WinTitle, WinText, ExcludeTitle, ExcludeText

A activates WinTitle A which means the Active Window .

Read more on Winset command here: https://autohotkey.com/docs/commands/WinSet.htm

If you're unfamiliar with AutoHotkey, download it from here: https://www.autohotkey.com/

And learn to use it: https://autohotkey.com/docs/Tutorial.htm

Explaining AutoHotkey would not be relative to this answer, and the tutorial link will explain much better than I can.

Using a hotkey for toggling AlwaysOnTop is the most convenient, but if you intent to not use your keyboard, here's a GUI way to do this since it was requested:

Just right click on the Autohotkey script icon on your taskbar, and click "Toggle Always On Top".

I have been using VirtuaWin since many years for this. It allows me to middle click on the title-bar of any window to make it stay 'always on top'. Works fine on win 10. Free, open source.

  • This work great! Thanks, but the problem is it requires middle click which require wheeled mouse, anyway to change it to right click (integrate with default context menu) so it can be performed with touchpad or directly on the screen? –  Nur Jan 25, 2017 at 6:19

With CClose , you can hold left click on a window's title bar to toggle it always-on-top. Simple as that.

Another great portable&freeware tool from Nirsoft - NirCMD - allows to set top-most state via command line as in the following sample, making active foreground window sit on top till it is closed (or returned to normal via sending "0") -

Best combined with a timeout, command will wait a bit (2 seconds) till you switch back to the desired window -

Personally, I use an awesome launcher ControlPad that sits in tray and waits for my action. I binded a dot . on my keypad to make any window on top (following command is specific for that launcher app only!) and double dot to disable that state

This NirCMD utility is very handy in many other occasions, so while it is already present why not employ it for this use case?) It really did help me!

Yes, try WindowTop from here: http://windowtop.info/

from softpedia review (source: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/WindowTop.shtml ) :

there are several functions at your disposal. These are accessed from a new menu attached to every window’s title bar. Menu options only appear on mouseover, and the container can be moved across the title bar.

It works really well on windows 10

gil123's user avatar

You can use maComfort .

After installing, in addition to many features, you can middle mouse click on the title bar and choose the "always on top" option. You can disable it the same way.

Gareth's user avatar

This perhaps doesn't exactly address OP's request, but Stick-It! is a great option for keeping certain windows on-top of others.

Key features:

  • Works with Windows 10 (tested, even though the landing page for the software doesn't state as such)
  • System tray controls
  • Doesn't retain on-top window settings through log out/restart/shut down

Windows are selected to keep on-top by right clicking on the system tray icon the software sets up, selecting "Stick-It!", and then simply clicking anywhere in the window of choice, which wiggles the window side to side for a second or two.

G-Man Says 'Reinstate Monica''s user avatar

Again using AHK, a similar solution like @Shayan purposed, but a better version given that you don't want shortcuts involved.

How to Enable Windows 11 Task Manager Always on Top

On Windows 11, there is a newly designed Task Manager . While it carries many features from older Windows editions, it also has peculiar new features. One such feature is the Windows 11 Task Manager Always on top mode.

When this feature is enabled, the Task Manager will remain the focus on your display permanently. This means every other application will open underneath it. The only way to take it out of focus would be to minimize it to the Taskbar tray or disable the always-on-top settings.

Let us show you how to enable always on top on Windows 11.

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open the Task Manager.

2. Click the Settings gear icon at the bottom left of the Task Manager.

3. Under Windows Management, tick the Always on top checkbox.

There you have it. Enabling Always on top is a straightforward process. However, if you do not have the Always on top feature when you open your Task Manager, you may proceed to see other alternative solutions.

What to Do if Always on Top Does Not Work

Enable always on top from the registry editor.

The registry is a hierarchical store of system configuration and settings. You may tweak it to change certain options on your computer. Let us show you how to enable Always on top of the registry.

1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.

2. Navigate to the path below.

3. On the right pane, right-click any space, click New, then click DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it AlwaysOnTop.

5. Restart the computer.

Benefits of Using the Task Manager in Always on Top Mode

You may use the Always on Top mode of the Windows 11 Task Manager for a few reasons. Some include the following:

Enhanced Troubleshooting

  • If you have a frozen or crashed program, it may block off access to other things on your computer. The Always on top mode allows the Task Manager to remain visible so that you may end the problematic program.
  • If you are working with some full-screen applications, especially games, they take the whole display, but the Always on top feature will impose the Task Manager instead of launching it in normal mode.

Real-Time Performance Monitoring

  • With this feature, you will have access to uninterrupted real-time performance monitoring. This allows you to keep your eyes on the CPU, disk, Memory, and more without interruption. This may be valuable when running resource-intensive apps.
  • When you are able to observe the resource page in real-time, you may quickly pick out and fix performance issues.

Streamlined Workflow

  • If you usually have to switch between many applications, the Always on top mode will ensure you do not lose track of the Task Manager while doing these tasks. You will always have a quick overview of all open tasks.
  • It also offers you quick access to your system tools like the Startup programs, Performance history, Services, and more.

FAQ on Windows 11 Task Manager Always on Top

1. Can I customize the opacity or transparency of the Task Manager window when “Always on Top” is enabled?

In the Windows 11 Settings application, there are a few settings and workarounds to help with window transparency.

2. Does “Always on Top” affect the performance of my computer?

No, it does not. However, it may obscure other apps, especially if you need them to open in full-screen mode.

3. Are there keyboard shortcuts for toggling “Always on Top” in Task Manager?

Sadly, we do not have any keyboard shortcuts for this setting.

How do I make the Windows 11 Taskbar always on top?

I cant seem to access my taskbar when it is hidden by auto-hide, and when I use the shortcuts, then switch to my tabs, it immediately disappears instead of going down. Every article I've read are for older windows versions, and use taskbar properties, but I don't know how to access taskbar properties on Windows 11, as right clicking it doesn't have all the options it used to.

Windows 11 A Microsoft operating system designed for productivity, creativity, and ease of use. 7,580 questions Sign in to follow

The very same issue has been bugging me for weeks. I originally thought it's a side-effect by Battlefield 2042's fullscreen mode (which sometimes crashes the ShellExperienceHost handling the regular Start Menu (but not the Search version accessible through Win+S), but only recently noticed it's actually (most likely) caused by the task bar no longer being always on top.

I'm pretty sure it hasn't been that way when Windows 11 released, but I might be wrong. It made me go back to the always visible task bar, since it's just annoying when you can't access anything with the bar not popping up (due to being behind other windows and the Start menu not always showing).

Guess I'm writing a small script to just manipulate the window style on my own…

I'm having this problem as well. The taskbar is frequently obscured by other windows which makes it quite unusable. Have experienced this ever since I upgraded to Windows 11, but I have not found any solution to it. When searching I find answers regarding moving the taskbar to the top of the screen, which has nothing to do with the problem I am experiencing.

I don't understand how this apparent bug is flying under the radar?!

It's becoming very apparent that Windows 11 is the new Windows 8, with changes no one ever asked for or wanted. Here's hoping Windows 12 will be the new Windows 10 where they try to fix most of their mistakes.

I had the same problem, and went to github to find solution and found someone that made a fix to atleast GeForce window broblem, so i don't have to turn it off ingame owerlay https://github.com/dechamps/RudeWindowFixer

I want to move the taskbar back to the bottom of the screen, since what i meant for always on top was on top of all windows. But when I change the regedit back to number 03, press ok, then restart, the taskbar remains on top of the screen. When I check the regedit again, i see that the number goes back to 01. What should i do?

I am having this same issue. All the sudden it just stopped showing up when I have windows open on full screen.

This worked for me:

https://windowsreport.com/windows-11-taskbar-always-on-top/

It is basically changing a registry value in:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects3

In "Settings"

On line 00000008, byte 5, change 03 to 01...

Then in Task Manager restart Windows Explorer.

same issue here, very annoying, worst when the keyboard covers the taskbar or you swipe up to see the taskbar but the start menu pops up, and cannot do anything before u close the stat menu. also most of the time must manually open the virtual keyboard when using this waste of money as a tablet. it has been my worst Microsoft experience

I've found the answer. I've seen another forum, and it seems to be a side effect of Nvidia's Game Overlay. Disabling Nvidia's Game Overlay will fix this. Here's a link to the post I found it on: https://superuser.com/questions/1163969/windows-10-taskbar-is-not-always-on-top

Ahh! That's helpful! I've tried all kind of things, except disabling that overlay. However, it seems as the latest driver updated from last week fixed this, at least for me it seems to be working as expected right now.

Forgot to mention, the driver I'm talking about is version version 511.23 from 14th January 2022. This fixed it for me (at least for now). So maybe you want to give that a spin and if it helps, update/select your answer as the solution.

Sadly, that version still presents this problem to me, so I'm not sure if it's fully fixed yet.

You're right! Just had it happen again, but switching windows fixed it once again. It's clearly not fixed, but definitely better (at least for me).

Thank you TiredSoul-0538, the taskbar not staying on top of other windows was driving me crazy from the first day I upgraded win 10 to 11, I disabled Nvidia overlay and it fixed my problem.

Thanks. That fixed my issue in windows 11. Let me know if a new update fixes this issue.

Aha, my hero and savior! feels good to finally see my taskbar again thanks a lot for the help! you've made someones UI 10x better

THANKS TO TIRED SOUL-0538. Nvidia Overlay pushing Windows Task Bar to NOT be on Top was REALLY annoying and iniconvenient. Turning it off fixed the problem isntantly.

Yes! This was exactly the cause of the issue for me on Windows 11!

Thank you! This fixed it. Though someone else pointed out that you DON'T need to entirely disable GeForce Experience, just open the overlay and go to Settings > HUD Layout and turn all the HUD indicators OFF.

This is the answer! TY:)

You beauty!

202891-image-2022-05-17-19-33-42.png

Ha, I was getting ticked off, this was the issue for me!

Thank you! This works without having to disable Nvidia GeForce Experience entirely.

This worked like a charm dude, thanks so much!

This was the issue for me and disabling performance overlay fixed it. You don't have to alltogether disable geforce experience in-game overlay, but just the performance indicator seems to have fixed it. DUMB.

This also worked for me. Nvidia needs to fix this.

Wow you solved it. Thankyou so much.

Hi @TiredSoul

You can check in the article below how to customize the taskbar in windows 11 and the different options you have to do this:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/configuration/customize-taskbar-windows-11

You also have the option to move the taskbar to the top using regedit, follow the instructions below:

1) Search for regedit in the Start menu and open Registry Editor.

2) Navigate to the key below:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects3

3) Right-click on the StuckRects3 key and select the “Export” option. Save a REG file to your desktop with an easy-to-identify name, such as bkp_registro_win11. This file is a backup of the registry key that will be modified, which you can restore if something goes wrong.

4) Double click on the “Settings” value on the right side.

5) In line 0008, place the mouse cursor in the fifth column, before the value 03 and press the “Del” key to delete the value 03. Then type 01 in the same place and click “OK” and close the editor .

6) Finally, restart Windows Explorer to apply the change. Open the Task Manager with "Ctrl + Shift + Esc", right click in Windows Explorer and select the option "Restart."

7) Once this is done, the taskbar will appear at the top of the Windows 11 desktop.

If you want to return the Windows 11 taskbar to the bottom of the desktop, just double click on the REG file you exported and finally restart Windows Explorer.

Uh, I'm pretty sure "always on top" here refers to "make the Task Bar overlap/in front of all other windows". There's no extra option for that, since it's been like that since Windows 95 (as long as it's not auto-hiding right now), but in Windows 11 this has been broken for some time now. At least for me and apparently a few others.

@Mario Liebisch is correct. By always on top, I meant always on top of other applications, not at the top of the screen.

Thanks, this is helpful however when I did this I lost the view when I open more than one file, ex. if I open 3 excel file I lose the view and when I click on those file nothing appear and I use the Alt Tap to navigate between my files

This works great only for main monitor. If you have two or more monitors, the taskbar stills on bottom on them.

I agree - this how to is not giving a solution to the problem. I looked for a setting somewhere to ensure the taskbar is always visible - i.e. always in front or always on top (not position on the screen). There is no setting. The work around is to hit the windows button on the keyboard and this pops the taskbar to the front.

it seems to me that "stuckrects3" isnt available on the path you mentioned. is there anything i can still do?

and startmenu animation continues comes from of down to up ....

For dual screen setups, head over to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MMStuckRects3. Look for a item named SAM0D37#5&3664bf47&0&UID4354 and follow the same steps as above.

Thank you!!

Regedit worked like a charm.

Microsoft acknowledged the issue in this Feedback Hub thread and promised a solution to be included starting with build 22567 .

For the time being, you can also use this tool , which runs in background and tries to fiddle with windows styles to avoid the issue. I've been using it for quite some time and only some games bug out the task bar, but this can be fixed by hitting the Windows key once or twice to make the start menu pop up and close. After that the cursor makes it reappear as expected.

Tapping the Windows key pops the Taskbar over top of a window such as a video that is set to fullscreen.

I have the taskbar set to show only the icons for the apps that are open on 'that' monitor. I might have 5 windows open on one monitor and three on another monitor. When I run a video fullscreen the video window covers the taskbar, and I can't access the other 4 apps I have on the monitor. I was having to take my video out of fullscreen. MarioLiebisch's recommendation to hit the Windows key solved my issue!

I have tried mucking around with the regedit and followed the online articles and videos but still the new updates on the Windows 11 revert back to the defaults. I now absolutely hate the windows 11 ! hate how the new windows 11 doesn't allow you to move your task bar to the top. Having the task bar at the bottom is not ergonomic and it hurt my neck. What happened to having the option to customize your windows

5 Ways to Make a Window Always-on-Top on Windows 10 or Windows 11

Computer running Windows 11

To make a window always on top, install Microsoft PowerToys and press Windows+Ctrl+T. You can customize this keyboard shortcut in PowerToys Settings. You can also use built-in options in applications like the Task Manager. Third-party utilities like AutoHotkey, DeskPins, and TurboTop can also make a window always on top.

Microsoft now offers an official tool to keep any window always-on-top of other windows on Windows 10 or Windows 11. We can also recommend some awesome third-party tools for making any window always on top—and many applications have a hidden option for this.

The Official Way: Microsoft PowerToys

We recommend Microsoft PowerToys for keeping a window always on top. Microsoft PowerToys is a free, open-source package full of powerful Windows utilities developed by Microsoft. The Always-on-Top PowerToy provides an easy, convenient, official way of making any window always on top, and it works on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

To make a window always on top, install and launch Microsoft PowerToys. Press Windows+Ctrl+T to make the current window always on top. A blue border will appear on the window, and a sound will play. Press Windows+Ctrl+T to undo your change and make Windows treat the window normally.

You can customize this behavior by launching the PowerToys Settings window. To do so, launch “PowerToys” from the Windows Start menu or click the PowerToys icon in your taskbar’s notification area and click the gear-shaped Settings icon.

Select “Always on Top” in the sidebar. If the keyboard shortcut didn’t work, ensure the “Always on Top” PowerToy is enabled at the top here. You can use the options here to change the keyboard shortcut, control whether a colored border appears around the window and customize that border, choose whether the sound plays, and configure windows that will never be made always on top.

We’re big fans of Microsoft PowerToys. The package is full of other useful utilities, and there’s a good chance you’ll find something else useful in it, too. Here are all the useful tools you’ll find in Microsoft PowerToys.

RELATED: All Microsoft’s PowerToys for Windows 10 and 11, Explained

Tip: We recommend the Microsoft PowerToys method as our top choice. You can disable other PowerToys in the PowerToys Settings window if you don’t like the clutter. However, we have a variety of other simple utilities and methods here.

With a Keyboard Shortcut: AutoHotkey

Using the excellent and useful AutoHotkey program, you can make a one-line script that sets your currently active window to be always on top when you press a certain key combination. The resulting script is lightweight and won’t use much resources or add unnecessary clutter to your system. You can even use AutoHotkey to compile the script to its own executable if you don’t want to keep the full AutoHotkey program running—or if you want an easy way to carry the script with you to other PCs.

First, you’ll need download and install AutoHotkey.

When that’s done, you’ll need to create a new script (if you already use AutoHotkey, feel free to add this to a current script or create a new one). To create a new script, right-click anywhere on your desktop or in a File Explorer window, point to the “New” menu, and then select the “AutoHotkey Script” option. Give the new script file whatever name you want.

Next, right-click your new AutoHotkey script, and then choose the “Edit Script” option. This opens the script for editing in Notepad, or whatever editing program you use.

In the Notepad window, paste the following line of code at the bottom. You can then save and close the script.

Next, double-click your script to run it. You’ll know it’s running because a green “H” logo appears in your system tray to let you know it’s running as a background process.

You can now press Ctrl+Space to set any currently active window to be always on top. Press Ctrl+Space again set the window to no longer be always on top.

And if you don’t like the Ctrl+Space combination, you can change the  ^SPACE  part of the script to set a new keyboard shortcut. Consult the Hotkeys documentation on AutoHotkey’s website for help.

RELATED: The Beginner’s Guide to Using an AutoHotkey Script

If you prefer using a mouse over keyboard shortcuts, DeskPins provides a super simple way to make windows always on top by just pinning them.

First, you’ll need to download and install DeskPins. After installation, go ahead and run DeskPins. You’ll see that it adds a pin icon to your system tray.

When you have a window you want to pin to be always on top, click that system tray icon. Your pointer turns into a pin, and you can then click any window to pin it so that it’s always on top. Pinned windows actually have a red pin added to the title bar, so that you can tell easily which windows are pinned and which are not.

To remove a pin from a window, move your mouse over the pin. Your pointer will show a small “X” on it to let you know you’re about to remove the pin. And if you want to remove pins from all windows you’ve pinned at once, right-click the system tray icon, and then choose the “Remove All Pins” option.

Using a System Tray Menu: TurboTop

If you like using your mouse, but don’t want to mess around with actually pinning windows—or have the admittedly Windows 95-looking pin buttons added to your window’s title bars—TurboTop sticks a menu system on its system tray icon so that you can make windows always on top.

After downloading and installing TurboTop, click its system tray icon once to view a list of all your open windows. Click a window’s name to make it always on top. Windows that are already always on top have a checkmark—click them again to make them no longer always on top.

Because this tool is so basic and minimal, it works well even when other, fancier applications struggle. It’s impressive how a little utility that hasn’t been updated since 2004 can still work so well two decades years later—it’s a testament to how cleanly this program does its work.

Without Installing Anything Extra: Built-in App Options

Many apps have built-in options so that you can set their windows to become always on top. You often find these options in media players, system utilities, and other tools that you might want to see all the time. Programs that accept plug-ins may also have an always-on-top plugin you can install.

The Windows Task Manager is one built-in application that has this option on Windows 10 and Windows 11, for example. To make the Task Manager always-on-top on Windows 10, click Options > > Always on Top in the Task Manager window. (If you don’t see the Options menu at the top of the window, click “More details” at the bottom.)

To make the Task Manager always-on-top on Windows 11, open the Task Manager’s menu, select “Settings,” and check “Always on top” under Window management. The Task Manager will remember this setting for the future.

Here’s how to enable the built-in always-on-top option in some other popular programs:

  • VLC : Click Video > Always on top.
  • iTunes : Click the menu button at the top-left corner of the iTunes window and select Preferences. Click the Advanced tab and enable the “Keep MiniPlayer on top of all other windows” option or the “Keep movie window on top of all other windows” option. Switch to the MiniPlayer window by clicking the menu button and selecting Switch to MiniPlayer.
  • Windows Media Player : Click Organize > Options. Select the Player tab and enable the “Keep Now Playing on top of other windows” checkbox.
  • Process Explorer : Click Options > Always on Top.

In addition to these apps, some bigger, more fully-featured window and desktop utilities also offer the ability to make windows always on top. DisplayFusion, for example, offers the feature (even in its free version), but also provides tools for managing multiple monitors, controlling the desktop and windows in all kinds of ways, and even tweaking other Windows settings. Actual Window Manager offers the feature, too, and also adds over 50 other desktop management tools. If you already use one of those—or are interested in those other features—then by all means give them a try.

How to Improve Task Management: Roles, Skills, Tips, and Tools

Task management is all about managing a task from start to finish. Learn tips on using task management tools, apps, or a task management system.

[Featured image] A project manager talks to a team member about different project tasks.

Task management is the process of effectively and efficiently tracking, managing, and executing the life cycle of a task or many tasks within a project from inception to execution. The purpose of task management is to improve the decision-making, communication, efficiency, and effectiveness of a task or project. You can improve your task management skills using strategies and tools like apps, software programs, and manual methods like to-do lists or charts.

Importance of task management for project teams

Task management is important for project teams as teams must communicate the status of various tasks and duties within a project to keep it moving smoothly and on track. Task management can act as a line of defence against major errors. You can also use it to troubleshoot problems that arise. Outsiders can also see a project’s progress in real-time, which is helpful for stakeholders and supervisors. This sense of transparency may be beneficial for receiving feedback and constructive criticism.

Task management roles

*All salary data is sourced from Glassdoor in India as of November 2023*

Depending on the team size and project scope, you may find task management used in various roles within a company. Some companies have a job defined as a task manager, while others have positions such as project managers or team leads who use task management to perform their jobs effectively.

1. Project managers

Annual salary in India: ₹20,00,000

Project managers lead teams of people through the lifecycle of a project by organising and planning aspects such as budget, documentation, and resources. They use task management to ensure multiple tasks within a large project are done on time and without error. They usually work with different people outside the project group to ensure a project comes together.

2. Team leads

Annual salary in India: ₹11,50,000

Team leads usually work with a subgroup of people who are part of a project. Individuals in this role rely on task management to achieve goals by delegating tasks to group members and helping their coworkers reach those goals.

3. Programme managers

Annual salary in India: ₹20,80,000

While project managers focus on single project tasks, programme managers oversee multiple projects and oversee project managers. In addition to ensuring that projects and outcomes adhere to the company's long-term goals, they use task management to maintain organisation across a wide range of projects and departments.

Benefits of a task management system

You'll find many benefits to having a task management system. These benefits range from improved efficiency to greater communication amongst team members, supervisors, or managers.

A few other benefits include:

Increased collaboration among team members

Projects staying on task and on time

More transparency with task flow

A better understanding of the needs of a project or tasks

Finding issues or concerns earlier

Preventing major issues that could derail a project

Completing projects more efficiently and effectively

Task management skills

Task management is a vital personal skill and an asset to many companies. You don’t have to be in a leadership position like a project manager to practice task management skills. These skills can translate into multiple aspects of your work day. Overall, task management can make you a more efficient, productive employee. Consider these task management skills:

Critical thinking

Ability to troubleshoot

Attention to detail

Effective communication

Ability to delegate tasks

More accurate goal-setting

Task management tools

Task management tools can help individuals, teams, or companies organise tasks more efficiently and effectively. These apps or systematic approaches to managing tasks help individuals improve productivity and manage their time and efforts. Most task management tools will include or incorporate some systems of charts, graphs, or grids that make it easy to see the progression and status of a task or project.

Task management tools are classified as online, electronic, and manual. To choose the best tool, consider the needs of your task or project, the size of your project group, the project scope, and your industry.

Task management software

Task management software, sometimes called project management software, are electronic tool teams which can be used to organise tasks. You can find both free and paid options, with most software programs having accompanying apps you can download to other devices.

Some popular task management software options include:

Gantt Excel is a template which provides a timeline view of tasks scheduled over time, as an optional template in Excel. With this programme, you can create milestones, highlight overdue tasks, set parent and child relationships, set project budgets, and more. Gantt Excel may be easier to use if your team is already comfortable with Excel.

Kanbanize digitises the concept of a Kanban board, another popular task management system. The Kanban system uses cards (tasks), columns (stages of tasks), and swimlanes (different work tasks) to create a visual representation of a project. Work-in-progress (WIP) limits and commitment points help teams manage deadlines and intervene with any issues.

HubSpot task management software is built for hyper-focused task management. It uses a to-do list format structure that allows users to prioritise tasks daily. The user-friendly dashboard also provides an array of functionalities within the programme, from spreadsheets to calendars—all in one place via one view.

ProofHub offers a wide range of task management methods in one software program, from Gantt charting to Kanban boards, along with other collaborative tools and workplace flow features. This software program can work well with varying-sized project groups and industries.

Apps for task management

Task management apps help teams collaborate on a task or project by providing a real-time platform that can be changed and amended. Apps are a convenient way to manage a task or project.

Some popular task management app options in 2024 included the following:

HiTask can be a useful task management app for smaller teams. This intuitive app features a shared calendar, time tracking, and a centralised dashboard that keeps everything visible and in one place. You can upload files to the app, assign projects, and send notifications to your team.

Basecamp is a good app to use when managing people who work remotely. Basecamp, one of the first task management apps, works well for groups of 20 or fewer. Features of this app include automatic check-ins to assess the status of a task, real-time group chat to troubleshoot and communicate when needed, and a shared schedule and calendar for easy access to important deadlines.

Monday.com allows users to prioritise tasks and change the status of tasks in real-time using the calendar built into the app. Communication occurs via the chat function. This app will be a great fit if you have a complex project to manage with many moving parts and people involved.

ClickUp is a highly customisable, user-friendly task management app you can use in almost any industry. You can create comment threads specific to certain tasks to stay on task and break big tasks into smaller, more manageable parts called subtasks. Like other apps, ClickUp allows you to create recurring tasks and schedule deadlines and important dates using a collaborative calendar.

Manual task management tools

Manual task management tools provide visualisation and organisation for smaller teams where tasks may not change often. These systems use physical items like paper, whiteboards, corkboards, sticky notes, and other items that allow all team members to see a task or project's progress visually.

Common manual task management tools include the following:

The Kanban board method uses sticky notes and large sections of chart paper. Using this system, you write tasks onto sticky notes and move the tasks into new columns based on the task's progress (i.e., in progress, review, completed, etc.). This “pull” method of task management offers a visualisation of tasks in progress by classing each task in terms of priority.

Spreadsheets can be a way to manage tasks manually. This could be a spreadsheet only the task or project manager uses or a shared document. You could use colour coding to separate stages of a task or people working on the project. Spreadsheets are great for organising tasks visually and can be used in several ways.

Paper calendars already have built-in dates and a visual sense of time, so you may find them helpful when managing tasks—particularly deadlines and mini-tasks along the way. A calendar allows you to highlight critical dates, give a good outlook on the week ahead, note any lags in delivery time, etc.

Task management vs. project management

Task management involves managing and tracking individual tasks, whereas project management involves the management of an entire project composed of many individual tasks.

Task management is a narrower approach to team management, focusing on the granular level versus the big picture, as is the case with project management. Task and project management require managing people and tasks on varying levels and degrees. Task managers and project managers use similar tools to achieve their goals.

Tips to improve task management

Tools like Kanban boards, software systems, and apps can all improve task management. Aside from these helpful tools and methods, you may find other ways to improve task management in the workplace. Remember that you’ll succeed more when you find what works best for you and your team. Here are some tips to improve task management:

Use time-blocking to improve productivity. Time-blocking blocks off chunks or sections of your day and devotes each section to a specific task. This method helps to structure your workday and can improve productivity since you’re focused on one duty at a time.

Encourage team members to set both long- and short-term goals . It’s easy to hyperfocus on minute details when managing tasks, widen your horizon and set flexible long-term goals to understand your progress better. This is a great tip for tracking progress; when you align goals to tasks, you may find better ways to achieve them.

Embrace the to-do list. A to-do list may sound simple, but if you can set your intentions for each day based on the previous day’s progress, you can keep a running log of actionable steps to achieve a task. You can use paper and pencil, the notes feature on your smartphone, an app, or a software program.

Maintain a flexible schedule. Keep an open schedule daily to prevent stress. This is not to say there should not be a hard and fast deadline for tasks, but be open to swapping out aspects of a task if one way works better. When you set tasks at the beginning of a new project, be open to necessary changes.

Implementing strategies

To improve your task management, consider using a tool that works for you and implementing some strategies to help you and your team achieve your goals.

Relying on a task management strategy or set of strategies can help streamline project completion. It also makes it simpler to provide feedback for future projects and tasks.

Prioritise time and efforts

Prioritising your time and efforts is perhaps on top of the list when considering strategies for task management. Time management and task management go hand in hand. You may be more efficient and productive when you can look at the tasks for the day and know what to focus on first and for how long.

Communication and delegation

Communication and daily assessment help spot problems early. Have a system where you check in daily with your team and leave an open line of communication.

Delegating tasks is another helpful strategy for task management, but knowing who to assign tasks to and how to delegate them is equally important. Provide clear, specific instructions and expectations and offer support along the way. Appropriate delegation can help your team work better together and soften the load of work on any one person.

When you’re ready to implement one or more strategies, bring your team in and include them in your vision for the task or project. And remember, sometimes finding the right strategy involves trial and error.
